Men – they make the world a better place. What would we do without them? I once told a young woman, who was mad at her boyfriend, that she would never find a perfect man – just one that was perfect for her. Nobody is perfect. I am, by far, one of the most imperfect humans on the face of the planet. (Don’t tell my children I said that, by the way!) So why would anyone expect their boyfriend or spouse to be perfect? When Mike and I met, we just clicked. We knew it. There was something there that was undeniable. Although there were times that we fought like cats and dogs, we still persevered. When our engagement was announced, people actually made bets on how long our marriage would last. Obviously neither of us was perfect. Well, 28 years later, we are still together. I guess some of those people lost some money! I hate that for them. We have had our ups and downs, and he drives me crazy at times, as I am sure I do him. However, you can’t let petty things ruin a great relationship. He has been there through good times and bad, and he has always supported me – even when I would come up with crazy ideas of quitting my well-paying jobs to start businesses! Luckily, those businesses have thrived and have been a blessing from God. Through them, I can help so many people and I truly love that. That’s why this month, I chose to highlight a family who all are entrepreneurs, owning three different businesses, and still remaining a close knit family. It is always interesting to watch a father and his sons interact – especially when you are taking their portrait. While taking the cover and story shots, I could instantly tell that this family was tight – picking on one another, helping with whatever may have been a problem that day, checking in on each other. The Carliles love what they do and love each other. Family is important. Then we have the men called “bachelors.” This year’s group of men is outstanding! From all walks of life, they are working hard and making a life for themselves. They have been great sports about all the questions, answers, and photos! You will want to be sure to check them out and, if you are single, hope you meet them one day! I am happy I met my bachelor! I think he had the idea that he wasn’t going to get married again, but we somehow changed that hard head of his. (God put us in his life and had a hand in that!) Having him as a husband and father has been a blessing for all of us. I hope that all of you bachelors out there, whether you are fathers or not, whether you are interested in marriage or not, find that perfect someone for you. You may not be looking, but God may put them in your path. May God bless you and yours…

As parents, from the moment when we first hold our brand-new baby to the proud day we see them graduate, we hope to build a legacy. We hope to pass on our values, our beliefs, our views of the world and our hopes for the future. Billy Graham once said, “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.” In the Carlile family, Gary has spent his life hoping to model hard work, respect, honesty and dedication to his four boys: Chad, Adam, Matthew and Collin. Gary has owned his own elevator service and installation business for over 17 years, and now his boys, Chad and Collin, are following in his footsteps by opening businesses of their own. Both boys followed their own passions. Chad is the owner of Soundz Good Audio and Video, and Collin is the owner of Collin’s Lawn Care. They both credit Gary and his example for where they are today. “Our dad is a very good example to look up to,” Chad says. “He’s a family man and a business owner. He taught us the value of hard work and to never give up.” Gary grew up working in his father’s wrecking yard in Jacksonville, Texas. Even though he was fascinated by mechanics, Gary got a degree from the Federal Insitute of Business in Tyler, Texas, and worked behind a desk in a finance office for several years before realizing that it wasn’t what

he wanted to do. “I was glad I got the business degree because it helped me down the road with running the business aspect of my company,” Gary says. “However, I knew that my heart was in mechanics.” Gary’s father-in-law owned his own independent elevator service company called ECON. Gary worked for him for 20 years, and then started his own company, CAMCO. The name was derived from his boys: Chad, Adam, Matthew and Collin. The “O” stands for the boys’ moniker for Gary: “Old man.” Gary’s company is an elevator modernization and service company that works for industries such as Red River Army Depot, International Paper, Cooper Tire and Firestone. For many years, Gary was on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Now, he’s hired good workers, including his son Matthew, and typically runs the business end and provides tech support to his technicians. “It has always been rewarding to be able to isolate, troubleshoot and fix a problem. I enjoy this work because it’s a different kind of job. It’s behind the scenes, and it’s something that no one else does,” Gary says. “It’s unique. I get to travel and meet a lot of different people. I’ve spent 40 years in this business, and it’s always been a good business for me.”
and always made church a priority. “I wanted to teach the boys to be hard workers, to be honest and fair,” Gary says. “I’m very proud of my boys and what they’ve accomplished.”
Chad grew up with a love of music. His uncle Bill played the drums, and after Chad became interested in them, Gary bought him his own set. His love of music continued as Chad began playing in the band at Fellowship Bible Church and working with the sound equipment. “Chad has always worked with video, music and sound systems, Now that Gary has taken more time so that was a away from the business, he and his natural fit for wife, Linda, enjoy square dancing. Now, she is the lead pharmacy tech at CVS pharmacy in Target, and the two have an 11-year-old son, Hayden and a 13-year-old daughter, Abbigale. “If I had to tell my kids something it would be to put God first and foremost in your life and in everything you do because you will never lose,” Chad says. “Next, I’d tell them that whatever they set out to
do in life, they should work hard and finish it. Finally, I’d tell them to live like there is no tomorrow. Life is too short and precious to waste and pretend. Live, laugh, love.” After Super One, Chad got a job at Cooper Tire, but in 2004 when they went on strike, Chad had to find an alternate way to make money, so he took a part-time job working for his father. He also made use of his experience and knowledge with audio/visual equipment to do side jobs. Chad reached out to his home builder contacts and put up signs all over town. He began putting in home systems in new construction. “I was working for Cooper and also working out of the back of my truck with these side jobs,” Chad says. “My business grew so much that I was able to buy my first service van, but then I outgrew it and had to upgrade to second service van and hire a helper. Then, in 2012, when I had been at Cooper for nine years, I decided to do this full time. We bought an office at our current location, and I had enough
business to hire two helpers and a secretary.”
Chad says. “We have a ‘goodnight’ button feature that when pressed turns off the interior and flood lights, closes Chad’s business, Soundz Good the garage door, and sets the security Audio and Video, installs TV wall alarm. When Collin was in high school at Pleasant Grove, he enrolled in the DECA work program and was the only student allowed to bring a lawn trailer to work. He would go to school and then mow right after school. “Collin has When Chad’s really grown in his area,” Gary says. “He younger does a great job. 2015, and they just bought their first home. “Owning your own business isn’t just an easy breeze. It’s not all about making money. You have ups and downs that make it stressful sometimes,” Collin says. “But, I love mowing yards, and I like being able to do what I like to do. I’d love to expand, add more employees and delegate more to my crew when Morgan and I start a family.” Like the rest of his family, Collin also has a heart for the community. Collin routinely mows veteran’s yards without charge. He says he tries to live by the quote he keeps on his cell phone that says, “Helping people may not change the world, but it may change the world for that person.” Collin has even traded services with a Navy veteran who had experience with electronics. He came and hung some lights for Collin, and Collin is going to take care of his yard a few times. “I have a soft heart for helping others. I want to do the right thing,” Collin says. “It’s about quality over quantity. I try to go out of my way to meet the needs of a person’s income and go out of my way to put a smile on their face.” Collin credits his father and his brother, Chad, with influencing his work ethic and morals. “Chad has made a big impact on me. He really inspired me to use technology more with my business. Everything is done on people’s phone these days, and so we carry out a lot of business on our Collin’s Lawn Care Facebook page,” Collin says. “As for my dad, he’s influenced me because of how hard of a worker he’s been. He’s always supported his family. He’s inspirational to me and makes me want to better myself and my life for the future of our family. I’m not sure what I would do without him.” Chad and Collin’s other brother, Matthew, is working for his father and learning the family business. “Out of all my sons that have worked for me, Matthew is my most valuable employee,” Gary says. “He is always willing to do what he can to keep 020 ALT Magazine | June 2017
things going. He will get up at 2 a.m. to answer a trouble call, he works on weekends, and he always assists me in how we will tackle a job.” No matter what the future holds for the Carlile family, they are bonded in their love for each other and their desire to work hard, be successful and give back. “My advice to anyone who wants to start their own business is to have a passion for it, and to be honest,
loyal and committed,” Gary says. “After 40 years doing a job that I enjoy, I’m glad to pass on my wisdom to my kids. That’s a legacy.”

ALT’S MOST ELIGIBLE BACHELORS
Although many great men are getting hitched, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of single guys looking for love. You nominated some of the hottest, most likable, talented, and just downright dateable men.
BACHELOR JASON STANDRIDGE OCCUPATION: TATTOO ARTIST AGE: 38
“
I’ve always said, “I was made to be a husband and a dad!” I’ve never been scared of commitment.
Tells us about yourself. Well, I’m 38 and I am the proud dad of two handsome boys! I have been a professional tattoo artist for 13 years, the last ten years have been at Dermagraphic Studio. Describe your ideal mate. Wow! What a loaded question! First and foremost, I’m a package deal with my sons. If you don’t want kids or couldn’t eventually treat them like your own, we won’t work out! I guess my ideal mate is a woman who is respectful, honest at all times, genuine, patient, loving, funny, caring. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? Haha! Probably not. I’m very personal about relationships. I don’t think everyone needs to know your business. What is your worst dating experience story? I went on a date once where my date talked about how “all guys are the same” and basically every man is “guilty until proven innocent” for quite a while. I’ve had worse, but I don’t like to talk badly about people and don’t want to embarrass anyone, just in case she’s reading this. Haha! Have you ever been on a blind date? Honestly, I don’t think so, but I can usually make the best out of any situation. What are your hobbies and interests? I love so many things, but at the top is music, travel, art, tattoos, jiu jitsu, and just finding new experiences. Do you have any children? I have two boys, Davin is 10, Jaron is almost 14. I had a child pass away a few years ago who would be 5 now. His name was Dayton. My boys are my world. If you follow my snapchat, it’s filled with pics of them! Are you a pet person? I like most animals. My youngest son is a massive pet lover. If it were up to him, we’d have 47 pets. Do you have any special talents? I grew up
singing with my whole family in church. I started playing guitar in 1998. I play guitar and sing with my friends at local venues, like The Arrow Bar, Twisted Fork, and Scotties, where we cover lots of music. I play a lot of 90’s R&B and blues, the best music ever! List 3 adjectives that would surprise people about you. I polled my best friends and these were their answers: genuine, caring, and humble. What is on your bucket list? I really want to travel more. I’ve been to Ireland and Belize in the last few years, but Japan and Rome are high on my list. I’d love to skydive, too. What accomplishments are you most proud of? Besides being Alt Magazine’s Best Tattoo Artist of Texarkana for the last two years, I have worked hard over the past couple of years to change my lifestyle and be healthier. In the beginning of 2014, I weighed 260 lbs. and I lost 100 lbs within a year and a half doing lots of cardio and watching my portions. I have since gotten back to a more reasonable weight for my frame at 175 and I feel better than I ever have. I’ve been doing Jiu Jitsu/MMA at Texarkana Combat Sports for around 2 1/2 years and I received my blue belt last summer. I’m working hard so I can eventually teach the art to other people. It truly changed my life. What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? I am a very open, honest
and communicative person in a relationship. I was raised by two very caring parents that were madly in love with each other until the day my father died of cancer a couple weeks before their 30th wedding anniversary. They were the model of love that I’ve always aspired to have. Like every relationship, they had ups and downs, but they always worked through their problems and overcame any obstacle. That is what I am still searching for. Do you think you are ready for marriage? I’ve always said, “I was made to be a husband and a dad!” I’ve never been scared of commitment. I would want to date for a while before marrying again. With that being said, if I felt an extremely close connection with someone, I would definitely marry her. Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? This is a strange question. Ummm… I’d say I put forth 100% effort in everything I do. If we’re together, you don’t have to worry about me looking elsewhere. Did that make any sense? Haha. ALT-Mag.com | June 2017 025
BACHELOR RUSSELL COBB OCCUPATION: MUSICIAN AGE: 29
“
I know God has the perfect woman picked out for me. When it’s His time for us to meet, it will be perfect.
Tells us about yourself. I’m from Texarkana originally. I’m a full time musician for Dusty Rose Band.
living is amazing.
Describe your ideal mate. I’m not out searching for her, I know God has the perfect woman picked out for me. When it’s His time for us to meet, it will be perfect.
Are you a pet person? Yes!!! I have a chocolate lab. He is my best bud.
Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? Probably not. I’m just not into that stuff.
What is on your bucket list? One thing, I’m hoping one day to open my own music store.
What is your worst dating experience story? My worst dating story, well I had a date one night, and she thought after one date we were in a relationship, it kinda freaked me out a little bit, it was a huge red flag.
What accomplishments are you most proud of? We all have big dreams in life, and by moving to Nashville, Tennessee, 3 years ago I got to live my dreams. I played for several well known country music artists, and did some session work as well. Living on the road, living my dreams. Right now, I’m so proud to be back in Texarkana playing with Dusty Rose Band!!!! The hottest and most booked band in the Ark-LaTex. The accomplishments of Dusty Rose are incredible and I’m so blessed to be a part of it. Jason Springer, Doug Cooper, Billy Templeton, and Tommy Mac are more than my best friends,
Have you ever been on a blind date? Yes, And it didn’t end very well! What are your hobbies and interests? My hobby is restoring vintage drum kits for people. Hard work at whatever you do is important and pays off.
Tells us about yourself. My name is Nick and I’m an easy going guy who just likes to enjoy the little things in life and surround myself with good friends who are like family. I like joking around and would describe myself as a people person. I’m a pretty simple and straightforward guy and love getting to know others. Describe your ideal mate. The ideal person for me would be someone that I fell in love with. People make it more complicated and make a list of traits they would want in someone. But to me someone who I just had a connection with, whether they fit some checklist or not, is who would be the best for me and make me happiest. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? I would never apply for The Bachelor tv show. It just doesn’t fit me. What is your worst dating experience story? I was on a date one time and we were at a restaurant. It was going well and we were enjoying ourselves, having a good time. I excused myself to go to the restroom and as I got up a waiter was walking by and we collided and drinks were split all over me. We both laughed and I was extremely embarrassed. Have you ever been on a blind date? I have never been on a blind date. What are your hobbies and interests? My hobbies and interests vary. I love sports and have played nearly every one of them. I try to play tennis when I can. I love building things and working with my hands. I enjoy going to the gym and meeting new people. I love traveling, camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, 028 ALT Magazine | June 2017
kayaking, rafting, riding jet skis and any other outdoor activity you could name. Do you have any children? I do not have any children. Are you a pet person? I am a big pet guy and love dogs. Do you have any special talents? I would say my special talent would be singing. List 3 adjectives that would surprise people about you. Well I acted some in high school and was fairly good at it. I can sing and most people never expect that. And it’s not necessarily a surprise but I’ve worked hard my entire life and I love it. Hard work at whatever you do is important and pays off. What is on your bucket list? My bucket list would include traveling all over the world, road tripping through the U.S., rock climbing, deep sea diving, and doing something I’m deathly afraid of doing. I don’t know what that is yet. But at some point I will and I’ll plan on doing it. What accomplishments are you most proud of? One of my proudest accomplishments would be going on a survival trek 3 days and living strictly off the land. Another would be being published in the Who’s Who book of academic excellence.
What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? I’d love to be in a relationship with someone I could do things I enjoy with and have someone with the same ideals and moral as me who understands me and I can be myself with. Do you think you are ready for marriage? Marriage isn’t something I would rush. I’ll never force a relationship or settle for anything. But if I found someone I wanted to marry and spend life with then I’m at a place in life where I would welcome that. Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? I would be considered an eligible bachelor for one, because I’m single and in the prime of my life. I know how to have a good time and enjoy the finer things in life. I respect others and work hard. I look good in a suit and I would definitely keep things interesting!

Girls would think I’m an eligible bachelor because I think Taco Tuesday should be a weekly holiday!
Tells us about yourself. I’m 34 years old and I have been a conductor for Union Pacific railroad for the past 11 years. I enjoy working out, good food (pizza, tacos, sushi, etc.), movies, concerts, and hanging out with my family and friends. Describe your ideal mate. My ideal mate would have to be a woman with a good head on her shoulders. I like women who are family oriented, ambitious, caring, and they must have a great sense of humor. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? I honestly don’t see myself as a “Bachelor” kind of guy. I haven’t watched the show much, but from what I have seen, those men are tall, have great hair, and are able to woo multiple women at one time… That doesn’t sound like me at all. I’m semi short and balding, but I can make you laugh! What is your worst dating experience story? I’m not sure it was the worst experience ever, but I had made plans to meet this girl at The Buckle before going out. I was in Texarkana and she was living in Mt Pleasant, so I assumed we would meet at the mall in Longview. I show up on time and text her to ask where she was and her reply was “at the store entrance.” Looking around, I thought for sure I was totally being punked because there wasn’t a woman at the entrance to The Buckle. I call her and find out that she was at the mall in Texarkana waiting on me and I was in Longview waiting on her! Well, an hour and a half and 140 miles later, we exchanged pleasantries at Buffalo Wild Wings. Not the worst experience, but it taught 030 ALT Magazine | June 2017
the lesson of proper communication! Have you ever been on a blind date? As of today, no I have not gone on a blind date, but I’m up for anything. What are your hobbies and interests? I enjoy working out, hunting, spending time with my nieces, hanging out with friends, and going to concerts. Do you have any children? No, I don’t have any children. I have the greatest nieces in the world! Are you a pet person? I love animals, however I do not have any pets at this time. I’m away from home occasionally with work and I wouldn’t be able to give them the attention they deserve. Although, most animals, babies, and old people seem to love me. Do you have any special talents? I’ve been known to make anyone laugh and I can somewhat play the piano. I’m pretty decent at golf and could probably improve my game if I took more time to play. I am also a weightlifting enthusiast. List 3 adjectives that would surprise people about you. Three words that describe me: Optimistic, Passionate, Funny
What is on your bucket list? My bucket list is to travel! I hope to see The Colosseum, The Northern Lights, the Pyramids of Giza, and The Great Wall of China, just to name a few. What accomplishments are you most proud of? I’m most proud of building my own home and keeping an exceptional credit score. What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? What I haven’t found in a relationship? I guess it would have to be a real connection. The type of connection that just happens and you both know it. Do you think you are ready for marriage? Yes, I think I’m ready for marriage. Not tomorrow, but one day down the road. Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? Girls would think I’m an eligible bachelor because I think Taco Tuesday should be a weekly holiday!

I would like to have a girl that is a best friend, and find the silver linings in all situations.
Tells us about yourself. I went to Redwater High School, and attended college here in town. I also teach 7th Grade Texas History, at Texas Middle School. I’m very laid back, and like to go with the flow. Describe your ideal mate. My ideal girl consists of a pretty girl, of course, who loves to laugh a lot, has a purpose with her life, and has confidence in that purpose. She has a sense of humor and doesn’t take life so serious. Being spontaneous is a plus, too. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? Heck no. Too much drama for me. What is your worst dating experience story? Nothing too bad. I have gone on dates with some girls that seemed to complain a lot and have bad attitudes. Have you ever been on a blind date? Kind of. I don’t think either of us expected the other to be there, but we just kind of went with it. It ended up being pretty fun. 032 ALT Magazine | June 2017
What are your hobbies and interests? I like going places to listen to music, sporting events, golfing, hiking, eating at different places, and random trips out of town.
What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? I would like to have a girl that is a best friend, and finds the silver linings in all situations.

Being the second person in my family to graduate college, and now I get to use that degree to teach others.
Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? I am a career minded guy with a laid back personality. I have my life together, and have built a life for myself that I not only enjoy, but I’m also proud of.

BACHELOR JEFFREY CASE
OCCUPATION: UNITED PARCEL SERVICE AGE: 46

Marriage? I might try it again, if the right person comes along...
Tells us about yourself. I’m a 46-year-old male who has lived in Texarkana my whole life. I graduated form Pleasant Grove High school in 1988. I attended University of North Texas and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I started working at United Parcel Service in 1994 to the present day. Describe your ideal mate. My ideal mate would be someone who is down to earth, who loves to go to concerts and/or spontaneous vacations. Definitely someone who loves the outdoors, fishing, hunting, riding ATV’s and of course someone who loves to shoot guns. This is a passion I have grown to like, plus it releases a lot of stress. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? Probably not because I don’t think UPS would approve that time off. Lol. But I couldn’t do it, not too good in front of the camera. What is your worst dating experience story? The worst dating experience was when I was a Kappa Sigma Pledge at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and I was home for the weekend. One of the members said I needed to get back to Little Rock because I was going on a double date with them. So to make a long story short I traveled back and when I got there I asked my buddy who were we going out with, and he said don’t worry about it. So we went to their house to get them and little did I know the girls came to the door and said, “I’m so glad you’re here and you will need this because you are going to my high school prom.” I couldn’t believe it but it turned out to be a fraternity prank. Have you ever been on a blind date? Yes, I have been on a blind date, but it turned out good because we are still good friends to this day. What are your hobbies and interests? I do love the outdoors but my main hobby right now is shooting and collecting old guns. As a child I collected football cards but as I got older I stopped. I would love to go to Tahiti one day and stay in one of those little houses in the middle of the water. 034 ALT Magazine | June 2017
Do you have any children? I have one child, Emma, who is 10. She is the love of my life. We are best friends and we do a lot of our favorite things together. I do spoil her and I’m sure that will come back to haunt me. But I really don’t care because to see that smile is everything to me. She will be in the 6th grade next year at Pleasant Grove Middle School, which will probably be nerve racking. Are you a pet person? I do love pets. Growing up I had a German Shepard. I have had three Rottweilers before and I do miss them. I like cats but I start sneezing when I’m around them. Do you have any special talents? I really can’t think of any special talents, but I’m sure there are hidden talents that I can’t think of right now. List 3 adjectives that would surprise people about you. Adventurous, risk taker, up for anything, and nothing really scares me. What is on your bucket list? Bucket List is to get my daughter to Disney World before it’s too late, to catch a Marlin so I can have bragging rights, and to take a float trip down the Colorado River. What accomplishments are you most proud of? The biggest accomplishment was traveling to Tallahassee, Florida, with my dad, Robert Case. During halftime of the FSU- Florida game, which was their homecoming, I was able to watch my dad walk across the 50 yard line at Doak Campbell Stadium and be recognized for holding a rushing record when he played under Coach Don Veller for the
Florida State Seminoles. He referred to his class as the “old Voles,” something I will treasure for the rest of my life. He even has his own brick with his name on it and his years played that leads to the liberal arts building. He played from 1947-1949. What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? Just a best friend and partner for life. Someone who makes you smile and can’t live without. Do you think you are ready for marriage? Marriage? I might try it again, if the right person comes along, but if not, then just someone to spend time with and have fun. Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? Because I’m not dating anyone but with UPS and the hours we work during the week, it would be hard to find the quality time you would want to have to spend with that special someone.

“
It makes my day if I can put a smile on someone’s face.
Tells us about yourself. My parents had two sets of twins. My brother, Jacob, and I are the second set. We are 29 years old while Jereme (yes, with an ‘e’) and Jessica are five years older. We grew up roaming the country-side in Genoa, AR. I’m a family man and a comedian. I love my family and my friends. They know we will have a good time no matter where we go. My dream career would be producing comedies. It makes my day if I can put a smile on someone’s face. Everyone goes through hard times. We should all enjoy life. Even the numerous oppositions that come our way shape us into who we are and how we handle certain situations. Being mathematically inclined, I developed an infatuation with numbers and pursued a finance degree after working several years out of high school for a better career. It has been one year since I graduated with a B.B.A in finance from Texas A&M - Texarkana and am still avidly searching for the next move. Describe your ideal mate. That would have to be an ambitious, realistic-optimist, familyoriented, outgoing, courageous, and smart woman who loves to travel and spend time outdoors. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” TV show? No way! Drama is not my forte. I can’t see myself having to choose between so many women in such a short amount of time. What is your worst dating experience story? I was catfished before. Catfishing is when someone portrays a false identity online and when you get the chance to meet them, they lied and are not who they said they were. It was all just to get you hooked. Have you ever been on a blind date? Yes and it wasn’t what I expected it to be. I would rather meet before dating. Some qualities a person has can only be acknowledged being face-toface. 038 ALT Magazine | June 2017
What are your hobbies and interests? I am a jack of all trades still trying to find my niche. I enjoy being with friends. Traveling is a big part of the summer. I like to go hiking, camping, floating the Caddo during the summer, playing the guitar, and watching movies, yet don’t watch much T.V. I enjoy cooking. I work-out at Anytime Fitness when I’m not at the park running or doing housework. And I’ve just recently became interested in producing music. Do you have any children? My siblings have two children each. I haven’t been fortunate enough to have any myself. Hopefully in the near future. Are you a pet person? Very much so. Growing up we had cats, dogs, chickens, pot-belly pigs, snakes, birds, horses, any and all kinds of pets. I enjoyed the times with each. I want a fullblooded wolf pup. Do you have any special talents? Music has always been a big part of my life. I sing karaoke and I can beatbox. List 3 adjectives that would surprise people about you. Adventurous, Gregarious, Witty What is on your bucket list? This bucket is deep… so, the top ones are to start a non-profit organization and to hike the entire Appalachian
Trail, which is about 2200 miles long. What accomplishments are you most proud of? Graduating college, overcoming stage fright, teaching myself to play guitar. What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? Commitment. I have yet to find someone who is willing to go through tough times and enjoy the good ones. It’s easy to back out when the going is bad. But having that one person stick around, working out whatever the problem(s) may be and having your back no matter what is rare and cherished beyond measure. Do you think you are ready for marriage? I am not ready for marriage as of right now but who is to say what I’ll feel in the coming years. Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? I’m compassionate, loving, empathetic, and have aspirations and the qualities to make a wonderful father and husband.

The Ultimate Staycation Guide Planning vacations can be tough! Budget and time are two factors most families have to consider. With school, work, and calendars filling up, exotic getaways to the Caribbean, road trips across the U.S. or flying to Europe aren’t exactly viable options. That’s why many people are opting for a staycation instead because they offer the benefits of a relaxing getaway without the stress (or expense) of traveling far away. Not only does a staycation eliminate travel and lodging costs, it also gives people the opportunity to really explore the city or town they live in. So start using those hard-earned vacation days, grab your family and explore the world right outside your door. These tips will help you create the perfect staycation, no matter where you live (and no matter what your budget). Disconnect You'd set an out-of-office message if you left the country, why not do the same even if you're just at home? The last thing you want to do is work through your time off, so be sure your colleagues know you'll be out of reach. Disconnect entirely by turning your smartphone off during activities and keep the TV off so you can truly unwind without interruption. Visit local museums Pretend to be a tourist and visit your city's local museums. From art and history to botanical gardens and zoos, there are plenty of ways to get cultured in your hometown. Plus, many national museums are free. Turn your backyard into a resort Bring the resort to you by creating your own beautiful outdoor oasis. If your budget is low -- don't fret, there are plenty of ways you can create the perfect patio for relatively cheap. Items like string bulb lights, hammocks, rustic beach decor and bright throw pillows can add a vacation vibe to your backyard space without breaking the bank. For the ultimate in backyard entertainment, create an outdoor movie theater with a sheet, a projector and some cozy beanbag chairs. Visit your local nursery for beautiful plants to add to your relaxing patio! Go for a bike ride Savor the longer summer days and opt for a bike ride by yourself or with your family. Local parks are the perfect place to take a relaxing ride and provide plenty of rest stops. Schedule a spa day Take one day completely to yourself and visit a local spa for a day of pampering. If you don't have the budget for a full day, opt for a massage, manicure and pedicure, or facial. You can also bring the experience home by creating a luxury aromatherapy spa in your own bathroom with essential oils, scented candles, and a relaxing playlist.

Forget the chores and housework This may sound counterproductive, but think about it -- would you make the bed or clean the kitchen if you were staying at a hotel or bed-and-breakfast? Treat your staycation just as you would any other getaway and skip the housework. If you can't stand the thought of a messy home, hire a housekeeper for the day to avoid any extra stress.
Visit a water park for all day fun!
Cater dinner in One of the benefits of vacation is the opportunity to try new and exciting foods (that you don't have to cook) that are unique to the destination you're visiting. Bring that experience home by ordering dinner in during your staycation. Simulate a trip to the coast by ordering in seafood or recreate a south-of-theborder experience with a Mexican feast. For fun, let the kids pretend to be servers and clean up-crew for the true restaurant experience!
Grab your poles and hit the lake!
Sleep in Ask anyone -- the best part about vacation (aside from the travel) is sleeping in. With no work, school or meetings to attend, there's no reason to have that alarm clock on. Give yourself a few days of uninterrupted snoozing so you awake more refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated.

This man has stood by me, supported me when he couldn't, and pushed me until he couldn't any more. My daddy has showed me the world from Girl Scouts to hunting and all the memories in between. Thank you daddy for loving me, being there when I needed you the most, and teaching me to spread my wings to have the family I do today! I love you always, your baby girl. [ Brittaney Rossum
We asked for your Father’s Days submissions for some of the most special dads out there! Here are some of the entries! Happy Father’s Day from all of us at ALT Magazine![
I would like to nominate my father, Mike Jones. If anyone deserves this he does. My father raised me during my teen years and still till this day. He is involved with the community doing many different things and always giving back to the community. I have multiple health issues and he has always been there in EVERY way possible. There were good times and bad times but in the end I knew he had my best interest at heart. You can ask multiple people and they will tell you they don’t see many fathers and daughters that are as close as we are. He is not only my father but my role model as well. I will always be a daddy's girl and always his little girl. [ Jess Jones 048 ALT Magazine | June 2017
If anyone deserves this tribute for Father's Day, it's my dad, James. He has been through more in his life than I can imagine. One event being open heart surgery in 2013, and more recently losing my Mom in September. It's quite cliche to say I have the best dad ever, but I do. He would give you the shirt off his back, and he's always there to help. He's taught me to work hard, be humble, and always thank the Lord for His blessings. I wouldn't be who I am today without him. He's the strongest man I know, he is my hero. [ Hillary Willbanks
This is my dad, Dr. Roger House. I call him "PastorPapaDoc" aka Santa. He wears many hats, so to speak. He's been serving people through his profession for almost 40 years. He's been taking care of the psychiatric needs of children and adolescents in the Arklatex area since 1991. He's so much to so many. He's also been my pastor for the last 11 years. He's an amazing Father, Papa, and Pastor. I am in awe of him and his great compassion. He is a man after God's own heart. [ Kalena Newberry
My dad is the greatest because...he chose to be my daddy. Our relationship began when I was four when he married my mom. When I was seven I presented him with my brand new cabbage patch doll complete with adoption certificate and asked him to help me fill it out. I explained, "I want to adopt you." With a smirk on his face, he asked, "Do you even know what that means?", thinking I had misspoke. Needless to say, several months later we were standing in a court room. I never questioned his love for me. He was my father in every way. I could go on and share his legacy and all he has taught me but that day, at the kitchen table, but that adoption certificate, says it all. [ Carla Ward
I would like to nominate my dad, Harvey Ridgeway, Jr.! First, this man made the decision to join the military, not knowing that his hard work and dedication as a soldier would pave the way for his daughter to become a first generation college student. I thank him for always believing in me and making sure I was always the best I could be. From loving my mother, my brother, and me, this man...is a GREAT DAD indeed. If anyone deserves this, it's him! [ Monica M. Ridgeway
Kyle Beach has been the Dad he didn't have to be to my son, Paxton, since he was just shy of a year old. He saw a little boy acting wild during church and then the rest is history. God placed him in our life at the absolute perfect time, and this year he made it possible for Kyle to officially adopt Paxton. The pure joy on my son's face when they announced he was now Paxton Beach is a moment I will never forget. Paxton never misses a chance to tell everyone how his Daddy is a Police Officer, and how he makes the best grilled cheese EVER! I will forever be thankful for my husband for filling that hole in my little boy's heart every single day without fail. Kyle may have a tough exterior, but one thing for certain is, his love for all three of his children cannot be put into words. We are beyond blessed to call him ours. [ Jessica Beach
"This man is the love of my life and the best father I have ever met. He has raised his two sons to be wonderful young men and accepted my daughter as if she were his own. Everything he does is to ensure our family is taken care of. I've never met a more loving, more caring, more wonderful person in all my life. If anyone deserves to be honored on Father's Day it's Matthew Brittenham!" [ Hannah Brittenham
This man is not only a wonderful husband, Firefighter, EMT, but the BEST daddy to his two little girls. While we all struggle with being an adult (work, school, bills, etc.), he never ceases to amaze me with his ability to be there for his family. He is strong willed and more stubborn than you could ever imagine, but would do anything for anyone in a heartbeat. The girls love it the most when he plays Uno and Minecraft with them and tucks them in at night. I think more than anything we are just happy when he is home with us. Happy Father's Day, Shawn Rossum. We love you and appreciate everything you do for us! [ Brittaney Rossum, Murphie, & CourtLon
I nominate my husband, Justin Hamilton, as the best Dad in the Arklatex. He is the best Dad I could have ever imagined for our boys. He is loving, fun, and a true "hands on" dad. I know many moms feel like they do more for their kids than their husbands do, but not me. My husband is my complete equal and does just as much for our boys as I do. I know it's been hard having 3 boys, ages 6 and under! He's not so bad to look at either! [ Hannah Hamilton ALT-Mag.com | June 2017 049

This is my husband, Justin Whitehead, talking with our 8 year old daughter Kaylor. Justin promotes Timberline Speedway, a local dirt track in Maud. He stays so busy on Friday nights making sure the show is going smoothly but he is never too busy for our daughter. She races go karts and in this picture he is telling her how awesome she did. You can see the excitement in her eyes from her daddy being excited for her. Being in a family that dirt track races life gets busy and hectic but Justin always makes time for us. Kaylor LOVES Mine Craft and Justin hates it but if she asks him to play, he is right there beside her controller in hand. We started our family when we were 18 and now he and I are both 27, he has been a huge supporter and an amazing father throughout our younger years to now. I couldn't have chosen a better daddy for my daughter. [ Sarah Whitehead
James Thompson – He’s an awesome daddy! He loves his two daughters with everything he has and adores his two grandchildren. He is a very busy guy who built a successful trucking business, races dirt cars on the weekends, and still finds time for his family and our busy schedule! Our oldest daughter has moved out into the world and has a family of her own but he still makes time to invite them to dinner or out to our house on a Sunday afternoon just to visit and play with our granddaughter and grandson. Our youngest daughter is a Senior at Maud ISD and he always makes it home for her events and wants to continue be fully involved in her life even when she’s off at college in the Fall. His family is his priority and you can see it in everything that he does. I am blessed to be married to someone who prides himself on his family and who makes them an important focus in his life, even when things get busy and crazy!! [ April Thompson
I'd like to nominate my dad, Mike Cole. He was left in an unfortunate situation to raise three little girls by himself and he never faltered on raising us. He worked multiple jobs to keep a roof over our head, and never once complained. My dad not only raised Kayla, Katie and myself. He has also helped raise my step brother, whose father isn't in the picture. He is a fantastic dad, a fantastic person, and takes pride in being a Christian! If anybody deserves to be acknowledged, it's someone who has worked so diligently to raise his children. [ Kaycee Cole Montoya
I would like to nominate my husband, Sohn Walton, for your “Best Dad” issue. He is without a doubt the most hardworking person that I have ever known. His mission in life is to take care of, and provide for his family. We have two children- Holly, age 9, and PK, age 7. (PK is named for Sohn’s grandfather). Sohn works building elevators. He is a man who puts his faith in God, and loves his family. He has risen above the struggles he grew up with, and has chosen to be an incredible husband and father in spite of those struggles. He will not hesitate to travel for work so that Holly can take dance lessons, or PK can participate in jiu jitsu. He makes sure life is fun, whether building Legos, playing Xbox, coaching ball, or teaching his kids a love for Superheroes and Star Wars. [ Jackie Walton 052 ALT Magazine | June 2017
My dad is a great guy all around but he is extra special to me because he chose to be my dad. He meet my mom when he was asked by the Navy to escort my real dad’s body home to be laid to rest. Months later they were married and he became dad to me and my older brother. Three years later we welcomed another brother, but to this day my dad has treated us all equal. He has coached every sport for all of us, even while going back to school 16 years ago to be a medic. He has always been my biggest fan and even helped me when I tried out for head majorette in high school. I came down with Bell’s Palsy right before tryouts and couldn't use one side of my face or even see out of that eye very well. He practiced every day and even learned the routine himself and came up with a way for me to do it with only a count because I couldn't see the baton very good. He has been a pageant dad, band dad, softball dad, majorette dad, football dad, baseball dad, basketball dad, but most of all a hard working, loving dad. He always said that he and my mom would take a trip for their 20 year anniversary since they didn't have a honeymoon because she had me and my older brother to take care of, but instead, this October he will have that anniversary and sacrifice that trip to walk me down the isle on my wedding day just 4 days after. I could not be more honored and proud to call Brett Wilson my daddy!! [ Lauren Vera

Pageants can be a wonderful learning experience for young women. From learning how to walk, to learning how to be well spoken, to learning how to ace an interview, the skills they learn to compete will help them for a lifetime. From college entrance exams to job interviews, they will be better off for having competed. Since 2004, I have been involved in pageants in some manner. That year, my daughter, Jaclyn, decided she wanted to compete – out of the blue. This tomboy who didn’t even own a dress and had never worn high heels wanted to do a pageant! What an experience that was! She learned so much during her short tenure in the pageant world – and I learned a lot, too. I was delighted when Laura Endsley and Kali Little asked me to judge the Miss Northeast Texas Pageant. Although I have judged several Miss America Preliminaries, I had not judged anything in the recent past and it was so much fun to be a part of helping these young women along the way. In fact, I was so impressed by what I saw, both on the stage and in the interview room, that I decided we needed to share these wonderful young women with our readers! I hope you enjoy learning a little bit about these amazing competitors. They will be competing at the Miss Texas pageant this summer – so be watching for them! And thank you, Laura and Kali, for trusting me to help choose them as your titleholders! I can’t wait to see what they do! Debbie Brower, Publisher

enough about this man and how thankful I am to have him as my father.

Other than a family member, who has been the biggest influence in your life? The greatest influence on my life would have to be my childhood best friend. Although she is probably not aware of this, I have looked up to her ever since we were children. Anyone who knows Morgan knows that she is a true fighter and shows her strength in her words and her actions. At a young age, Morgan was diagnosed with cancer. Instead of being heartbroken by this terrible news, her first reaction was “I’ve got this.” Those few words already said so much about her heart before the fight had even begun. Now at the age of 20, Morgan is as healthy as ever. She continues to bring light to any room she steps in. I continue to admire her uplifting spirit as it has led me to realize that no matter what we go through in life, we should always keep our heads held high and a positive attitude. If we can do this, then there is nothing that can stand in our way.

What do you want others to know about you that they probably wouldn’t have known before? As I have never flown in a plane, my biggest dream is to travel the world. Once I am done with school, I hope to have a year that I can put aside to travel. I have always desired to be able to experience other cultures and all they hold. I am actually already saving up to travel once I graduate.

Why did you choose your issue? How is it personal to you? I chose my platform, You are Enough: Finding Beauty in Individuality, because I feel that it is very necessary that we promote the values of self-love and self worth. As a young girl, I struggled with understanding that although I was different than everyone else, I was beautiful. My only desire was to fit in and feel accepted. Due to the fact that I would not go to some of the lengths necessary to be “popular,” I had to learn that it was ok to stand out from the crowd. Once I stopped comparing myself to the rest of society, I came to realize that I was created in my own beautiful and unique way for a reason. 056 ALT Magazine | June 2017
How has being a part of the Miss Northeast Texas system changed the way you look at life in general? The pageant world? The Miss Northeast Texas Organization has definitely changed my outlook on life in general, as it has taught me a lot about responsibility and what all it means to hold a title. Q&A
1Why did you choose your issue?
How is it personal to you? I believe that volunteering can change and save the world we live in. I also feel that the youth are who have the greatest impact on where our world will end up. I started volunteering at a young age and I take every chance I can to find a way to participate in giving to my community.
2Since this is our Father’s Day issue,
how has your dad, or father figure, influenced your life? My Dad continues to inspire me to follow my dreams and to keep pushing forward no matter how hard things may seem. My dad always believed in me and I try to make him proud with everything I do.
than a family member, who 3hasOther been the biggest influence in your life? The late Mrs. Lois Byars was the first person to introduce me to volunteering through participating in Party in the Neighborhood, an outreach program that gives back to the Texarkana community. She is a life long family friend who is more like family. She was a strong, kind and selfless woman of God who I admire. What is your favorite quote? than a family member, who 3hasOther been the biggest influence in your life? My favorite TV show, believe it or not, is Full House. I am a huge Candace Cameron Bure fan. I love her in Full House, but what I really love is her love and dedication to her family and that she has also maintained a strong Christian faith while being a celebrity. She writes books about raising your kids with kindness and her message is very similar to my platform. What is your favorite quote? My 4favorite quote is: THE SAME BOILING WATER THAT HARDENS THE EGG, SOFTENS THE POTATO. It’s about what you’re made of, not your circumstances. Don’t let you circumstances define who you are! Be resilient in your goals and dreams and don’t let things effect your outcome!
5What do you want others to know
about you that they probably wouldn’t have known before? One thing people may not know about me is that I want to be a Pediatrician. I have always had an interest in medicine and taking care of others, especially children. I hope after college to go to medical school and become a Pediatrician.

FINANCIAL FOCUS
W/DUSTIN STRINGER
STRINGER WEA LTH M A NAGEMENT LPL FINA NCI A L StringerWealthManagement.net
BACK TO BASICS: KNOW WHAT YOU OWN Our firm has the privilege of working with clients from across America, some at the beginning of their saving/investment process while others are nearing, or are already in retirement. Each of you is unique in your own right, yet similar in your desire to achieve a secure financial future for you and your families. At Raymond James, we hear with increasing frequency how complicated and confusing the financial markets have become. If we are honest with ourselves, we must acknowledge that we work within financial markets which can be difficult to understand: unprecedented central bank intervention; declining interest rates, reaching levels not seen in over fifty years; plunging commodity prices, and stagnating wages. Many of us look to the past to help us understand the future, but it can only tell us so much when fundamental changes are occurring around the globe. As the saying goes, “The only thing that is constant is change itself”, but ask around and most will tell you that this time definitely feels different. So what are investors to do in the face of such uncertainty? It would seem prudent to simplify and get “back to basics”. Unfortunately, much of what the investment community now offers is precisely the opposite; in an attempt to solve or fix this uncertainty, investment managers are sometimes introducing unnecessary complexities into their products, offering untested “go anywhere and do anything” strategies labeled as “unconstrained”. It’s an attempt to grab market share, and more importantly, grab a share of your investment dollars. Not counting individual stocks and bonds, there are tens of thousands of 070 ALT Magazine | June 2017
investment products aiming to be a replacement for these assets. While such products may look and sound a lot like stocks and bonds, they are not. Instead, they are manufactured products with a wide range of objectives, whose primary measures of performance are what it did in the past, not what you can count on in the future. Fixed income should be simple and reliable, but instead of making things simpler, the industry has at times made it more complicated. It’s no wonder investors are confused. The solution to this uncertain market is to simplify your fixed income investments and get “back to basics”. So what makes sense, or is simple in the world of fixed income? Owning individual bonds, which is not to be confused with bond funds, ETFs, closed-end funds or MLPs. Simple, transparent, reliable and easyto-understand individual bonds. Bonds highlight one of backbones of investing: reliable income and return of your investment (par value at maturity). Even better, those investors holding municipal bonds can rely on tax-exempt income. Your financial advisor can use individual bonds to build customized portfolios to create reliable income to meet your unique needs. With individual bonds, you need not worry about index returns, the path of future interest rates, or any of the rest of the noise. Bonds are transparent and you know what you own; they tell the future and let investors know exactly what to expect and when to expect it. It’s that simple, and the best way to get “back to basics”. With Shock Analysis, we can show you what your portfolio is likely to look like if interest rates were to rise or fall. Better
yet, for buy and hold investors with our customized portfolios, we can tell you how much money you will receive year after year until your bonds mature (at par, barring a default). No guessing, no voodoo, and as near to certain as you can be in such an uncertain world. You can count on bonds in the future, as their stated income, yield and maturity are all known ahead of time. This is what we mean by “getting back to basics”. Is your fixed income working for you? Do you know what you own? Investing involves risk and you may incur a profit or a loss. Investments in debt securities involve a variety of risks, including credit risk, interest rate risk, and liquidity risk. Investments in debt securities rated below investment grade (commonly referred to as “junk bonds”) may be subject to greater levels of credit and liquidity risk than investments in investment grade securities. If sold prior to maturity an investor will receive the then current market value which may be more or less than original cost. There is an inverse relationship between interest rate movements and fixed income prices. Generally, when interest rates rise, fixed income prices fall and when interest rates fall, fixed income prices rise. Investments in municipal securities may not be appropriate for all investors, particularly those who do not stand to benefit from the tax status of the investment. Municipal bond interest is not subject to federal income tax but may be subject to AMT, state or local taxes. Additionally the bonds may be subject to capital gains taxes if sold or redeemed at a profit. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. The risk of default may increase due to changes in the issuer’s credit quality. Price changes may occur due to changes in interest rates and the liquidity of the bond. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Just Pondering I was thinking about the water issues in North East Texas, how they might play out, and how is this good for fisherman. I can say with relative certainty that unless you are in your 20’s or maybe 30’s we don’t even need to worry about ever putting a boat in at Marvin Nichols or Marvin Nichols #2. As with all things that involve any type of government, it will be a while to complete more studies. They still need to do a study on the life cycle of the Dark Darter, another on how creating a new lake will impact the catfish that are native to the Sulphur river, as well as do rabbits breathe at the bottom of a lake? The purpose of a ton of studies is to provide full employment for those people who propose and write studies, then those studies are thrown away, so a year or so later they can order the same study they threw away last year and spend another $200,000. Now comes the next question, how does a study on the lifecycle of a shad cost $200,000? Does it really take a study to tell us that with more water comes more water snakes and water moccasins, or that when you build a lake, fish will populate it sooner or later. With all the “studies” and other junk, I will never see a new lake, but some will and if the Fish and Game do it like they did Lake Fork, someone will have some really good fishing. By the way, Shad spawn in the spring typically early in the morning. In the winter they reach maturity and some will die off due to cold weather. Gizzard shad can live to the ripe old age of 11 years but most are history by 3 years and Threadfin live to about 3 years, then they die. Where is my study money?
