Thankful… Thanksgiving will be different for my family this year. Mike and I will definitely be making new traditions. With Jaclyn and Marshall moving to Del Rio, and my son in Dallas, we will be on our own. It will probably be steak dinner instead of turkey, lots of resting, and very little of anything other than snuggling with our dogs. Like I said, new traditions. Our Thanksgiving will be another day at my son’s house, and our Thanksgiving/Christmas will be sometime around the first part of December for Jaclyn and Marshall. I could sit here and tell you how depressed I am about that, but I won’t. The reason for that is I am not! Things happen in life that make you have to recreate your world. You can sit and complain or you can take it and run with it. I choose running.
Many others have chosen paths in the lives that caused others to have to change traditions. We have highlighted many of those women and men this month in our salute to area veterans. I love taking time to say thanks to those who were willing to give their lives for our safety and our freedom. They gave up many holidays and family gatherings to help others, and that’s what America is all about. So while you are eating, drinking, and being merry, think of those who are far away doing a job they chose to do. They are helping others. And if you suddenly find yourself creating new traditions, roll with it. Be thankful for the many things He has given you. God bless you and yours.

two years and usually take a cruise. “A lot of us communicate through Facebook,” Mike says. “My wife and I are from San Diego, California, and we try to visit family as often as we can. While we are in San Diego, we have a west coast NOSTRA reunion with Navy opticians that have retired there.”
Though he is now retired, Mike served in the U.S. Navy from November 1972 to May 1994. “My motivation to join the military was my parents. They were tired of me not doing anything but watching TV all day and going out with friends all night,” Mike says. After training, Mike was responsible for giving vaccinations to 1000-1500 new recruits, driving the ambulance, and working in the pneumonia ward, emergency room, and eye clinic. The majority of his service, Mike worked in NOSTRA (Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity) in Yorktown, Virginia. Though it was really competitive, Mike is proud to have earned the rank of Chief (HMC). “I was one of two personnel to make it on our entire base,” Mike says. “I also earned a Navy Commendation Medal during my career. It was very difficult for an enlisted person to be awarded.” Mike feels lucky to have met numerous “intelligent, helpful, brave and humble friends.” They have a reunion every 010 ALT Magazine November 2019
One funny story from his years of service occurred when Mike first reported to the NOSTRA lab. He worked next to a “big, muscular man” who said Mike was going to be a “hit.” Mike was only 120 pounds and had no idea what he had in mind. The man then began to wrap Mike from head to toe with enough toilet paper that he could not move or see. “He picked me up and stood me on the conveyor belt that is used to move eyeglass lenses, and he hit the start button,” Mike says. “Off I went as the rest of lab personnel threw wet sponges and sprayed me with water hoses. I knew there was no way to get off safely as the belt was four ft tall. When I reached the end, I fell. Luckily, I was caught by the man that had put me up there. He said 'you were a hit!' We became best friends and still talk by phone occasionally.” Mike believes all of us can honor veterans and our country by always standing and facing the flag during the National Anthem. “We should remove any headwear and not talk or laugh during our National Anthem,” Mike says. “Most importantly, we can teach our children, grandchildren, and students to do so as well. I’ve seen young children on military bases playing, and when “Colors” plays, they all stop what they’re doing, put their hands over their hearts and are quiet until it’s over. It can be done.”

months before retiring April 1, 2005. He was active in the Army for three years, inactive reserves for two years and two months, Texas National Guard for 10 years, and U.S. Army Reserves for 21 years and five months. While in the U.S. Army Reserves, he was activated twice. He served for six months at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He also spent one year in New Orleans and Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, during Iraqi Freedom. The rank that Eric is most proud of achieving is Second Lieutenant. “I was proud because I had to get an age waiver. I had already served eight and one-half years as an enlisted soldier when I rose to the rank of E-7, Sergeant First Class,” Eric says. “In Officer Candidate School, 220 started and only 67 graduated to become an officer.” Eric received the Bronze Star in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. “I got the award while supporting over 250,000 troops through our warehouses while I also served as the S-1, Personnel Officer,” Eric says.
Eric Beach joined the Army on September 3, 1968. “I felt the need to support my country in time of war,” Eric says, “however, I went to South Korea instead of Vietnam because of the Pueblo Incident.” After training, Eric seemed to always work as an enlisted soldier or as an officer in the supply chain for food, clothes, ammunition, vehicles, or medical supplies. All in all, Eric served for 36 years and seven 012 ALT Magazine November 2019
For 10 years and five months, Eric served with Det 1, 321st Material Management Command, in Eldorado, Arkansas. The group still gets together annually, and Eric remembers men like Lorenzo Shavers, Robert Murphy, and the late Walter Kennedy as men who influenced his time in the service. “Also, Co D, 111th Med Bn meets annually in August in New Boston, Texas,” Eric says. “Many are former employees of Red River Army Depot, which is where I worked as an Information Technology Specialist for 38 years. I am now retired.” One funny story that Eric recalls occurred at summer camp with Co D, 111th Med Bn. “We had cut open several watermelons when we were attacked during an exercise by CS gas (tear gas),” Eric says. “Once we were given the all clear, several soldiers started to eat the watermelons when they discovered the tear gas had settled in the watermelons! They were eating tear gas! Needless to say, they quickly disposed of what they were eating and had to deal with the aftertaste.”
Eric says that the military made him a more organized and efficient person. “I am told that I bark orders and expect things to be accomplished properly,” Eric says. “I am also fairly organized in how I do things.” Eric supports fellow veterans through donations to several veteran’s organizations. However, he says that the best way Americans can support a veteran is by thanking them. “You can show that you appreciate what they have done for your freedom by thanking them for putting their life on the line for the United States of America,” Eric says. “I have had numerous people of all ages come up to me and thank me for my service to our country while I was wearing a US Army cap, and that means a lot to me.”

While in the Navy, Mike received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon for three tours of duty in Vietnam. “I am proud of having served,” Mike says.
In November of 1967, Mike received a draft notice directing him to report for duty in the U.S. Army. “I decided to see if there were better options,” Mike says. “After visiting with the Navy recruiter, I realized there were more educational opportunities with the Navy.” Mike Carter joined the U.S. Navy on November 28, 1967, and began a 14 year military career that spanned multiple branches of service. “After boot camp, I was ordered to the USS Berkeley DDG 15,” Mike says. “I initially was assigned to the Engine room, but after 16 months, I was sent to air conditioning school and worked on the ship’s air conditioner and refrigeration. I was proud when I was promoted to E-5. This rank is the point where you move more into supervision.”

Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in September of 1971, Mike joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves and served 4 years at Barksdale Air Force in Shreveport, Louisiana. When the tour ended, Mike decided to enlist in the U.S. Army Reserves where he served two years. Then, Mike had a friend in the U.S. Coast Guard, and Mike decided to join the unit in Oil City, Louisiana. His unit was eventually transferred to Port Arthur, Texas. After a 4 year stint in the Coast Guard, Mike decided not to reenlist. “My career in the air conditioning industry was started in the military,” Mike says. “The education and experience I received was the foundation of 52 years in the industry, 36 of which I was self-employed.” Though he says it has been 52 years since he has seen any of the men he served with in the Navy, Mike keeps up with a few on social media, and his best friend, Charlie Davis, who served in the Coast Guard with him. “We had many good years serving together, and we are still best friends,” Mike says.
Now, Mike is the Bowie County Commissioner, Precinct 4. He joined the American Legion shortly after his military service ended. He also joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars and has just recently joined again after years of inactivity. In addition, he has been a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America chapter in Texarkana for many years. For him, recognizing veterans can be a very simple act. “Honoring veterans can be done by showing up for the Veteran’s Day parade,” Mike says. “Most veterans feel most honored by just a simple, 'Thank you for your service.'"

Greg’s original job was a Field Artillery Firing Platoon Leader. Following that, he was promoted to Captain and moved to infantry. From there, he became a Company Commander. “Upon my promotion to Major in the Army Reserve, I moved into Civil Affairs where I served as a Direct Support A Team Leader, Company Commander, and Battalion Commander,” Greg says. “My favorite rank was Captain. That was the first time I had command. Command brings with it an awesome responsibility for leadership. As a Captain, I was not only responsible for the training and well-being of my soldiers, but also for all aspects of their lives. In the military, when you don’t do your job right, it could mean injury or death. That is when meeting or exceeding standard is an objective measure. The most important measure being everyone goes home at the end of the day.” Most of Greg’s time was spent in the U.S., but he had temporary duty assignments all over. He says that he earned various medals and badges. “Some were awarded for doing a good job and some for doing your job and living to tell about it, which some people call heroism,” Greg says. “I would say though, my campaign medals are the most honored. It is the campaigns such as Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq that Americans answer the call of the country to protect what we believe in.”
Greg Cordray is currently a financial advisor with Edward Jones, but in 1986 he was commissioned as a 2LT in the Army upon graduation from Texas A&M where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He served for 26 years until he retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. “My motivation to join the military came from my father who was in the Army during the Korean Conflict, and my great uncle who served in WWI,” Greg says. “My motivation also came from my experience in the Corps at Texas A&M.” 016 ALT Magazine November 2019
Throughout his service, Greg had the privilege to meet several high-ranking officers and serve under some of them. He met Colin Powell, Norman Schwarzkopf, David Petraeus, Tommy Franks, Frank Helmick, and Fred Smith. “Then there are the guys that we slugged it out with. These included Bill Mason, Bobby McLaughin, and my hometown hero, Bill Smith. I talk with these three for the most part,” Greg says. “Helmick, Smith, and I talk a couple of times a year.” One thing that being in the military really taught Greg is how to prioritize tasks and understand people in a unique way. “We always hear 'begin with the end in mind' or 'consider the desired end state' in the military. We are told to think about what our exit strategies are or what the objective measures are to know when we
have achieved our goal,” Greg says. This Veteran’s Day, Greg says the best way to honor servicemen and women is to thank them and show appreciation. “Listen to their stories in order that you can better understand what it means to be in the military,” Greg says. “I really don’t like to tell ‘war stories’ as much as I want people to understand what it is like to be a part of something bigger than yourself that has a direct affect on how we live our lives today and in the future.”

while I was deployed asked me what rank I wanted to make before I got out of the army, and I told him I wanted to make sergeant first class,” Matt says. “I had to do a lot of training, and it took quite a bit of motivation that I had to summon up from within to push myself through it all.” Matt has four Army Achievement medals, and one Meritorious Service medal, which means a lot to him. He received it as a sergeant, which is very rare. He also realized it's value when he learned that it takes a one-star general to present the medal. “I received that medal for stepping up as an assistant convoy commander, which was a staff sergeant’s job. I didn’t realize that my chain of command thought that high of me to put myself, as just a sergeant, into that position. I was really nervous, so I always tried my very best to make sure to get the job done,” Matt says. “I believe my conduct during a point when my convoy was attacked probably had a lot to do with it. I made sure everyone followed all of the procedures we trained so hard for. I couldn’t believe it myself that I remembered every step of what to do when that happens, but everyone made it out safely, with minimal injuries.” Matt Jones joined the Army Reserves in 1999. He chose to serve his country like his older brother who joined the Navy. He is still serving in the reserves and is also a supervisor at Red River Army Depot. His primary job after initial training was a logistic specialist, but he eventually became a track and wheeled vehicle mechanic. “The army needed more truck drivers during the Iraq war, so one day I got orders out of the blue to report to Alabama. I was going to be a truck driver, and I was going to be deployed,” Matt says. “I am currently now a maintenance supervisor in an engineer unit.” Matt’s current rank as sergeant first class is something he is very proud of achieving. “My first sergeant I had 020 ALT Magazine November 2019
Looking back, Matt credits many special people in his life that have helped him become the soldier he is today. One of the first was his section leader SGT Pickett. “He was my Staff Sergeant until I became a Staff Sergeant. We now work together as supervisors at Red River, and I call him my Army Dad,” Matt says. “Then, Vernon Drake was my squad leader when I was deployed, and the positions and assignment he put me in really helped me grow as a leader, and I still consider him a good friend. I talk to him from time to time on Facebook.” Matt also credits Major Arras, one of his old commanders, as someone who truly helped him grow as a leader. “His persistent motivation helped me achieve the rank I have today,” Matt says. “I also think

Marine Corps Commendation after her last combat tour in Afghanistan in 2013. Through her time in the military, Karen met many important people that she still keeps up with today. “I served with Corporal Nancy Bucheitt in Desert Storm, 1990. We still keep in touch through social media, and we are planning a trip to Oregon next year,” Karen says. “I also served with Colonel Katherine Jones (retired) in Afghanistan, 2013. She attended my retirement ceremony, and we have made several visits with each other since that deployment. Gunnery Sergeant Wendy Noonan (retired) joined the Marine Corps and trained at Parris Island with me in 1989. She has remained a dear friend.” One of Karen’s funniest experiences in the military occurred when she flew back home to Texarkana in June 1991, after her Desert Storm deployment. “I was so excited to see my family that I walked right past a KTBS 3 News reporter to get inside the terminal,” Karen says. “My mom was laughing at me because I had no idea they were there to interview a veteran; me. In my mind, I was just a 24-year-old girl that was excited to be back on American soil.”
Karen Junjak joined the Marine Corps in September 1989, and retired this November as an E-8 Master Sergeant. “I am extremely proud of that because my dad retired as an E-8 First Sergeant in 1977,” Karen says. “Both of my parents served in the Marine Corps.” After basic training, Karen’s primary job was in the motor transportation department as a Logistics Vehicle System Operator. The majority of her service took place in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She received the Navy and 022 ALT Magazine November 2019
Since retiring, Karen has taken a job at Cooper Tire and Rubber Company. She is also an active member of the Women Marines Association and Molly Marine Chapter LA-1. This Veteran’s Day, she urges Americans to be proud to fly the flag in honor of the veterans who have made the commitment to serve our country, some making the ultimate sacrifice. “I also think it’s important to make it a point to tell a veteran ‘thank you’ at any opportunity available,” Karen says. “My experiences in the Marine Corps has given me a greater appreciation for the United States of America and how many freedoms we have as Americans.”

Currently, Lee is a disabled vet from injuries received during repairs of steam turbines. He is also a member of the American Legion. Lee Lybarger is currently a car salesman, but he served in the Navy from July 1897 to July 1991. He joined the Navy after his brother, Jerry Linex, came home and recruited him. “I was his first recruit after training,” Lee says. “I wasn’t living right.” Lee went to boot camp in San Diego and was stationed afterwards in Norfolk, Virginia, where he completed a six-month medical cruise. On that cruise, he received a captain commendation for repairing the main engine underway. He also received his E4 Petty Officer 3rd Class in two years. 024 ALT Magazine November 2019
Lee believes that one of the greatest American tragedies is how veterans are treated when they return home. “Most people do not honor veterans because they do not know what we sacrificed being out there alone, dreaming of being at home with our family and friends,” Lee says. “I had the honor of pulling into port and being surprised by my parents who made the 19-hour trip to see me come back to the United States.”

The rank he is most proud to have earned is Major. “As a Dental Officer you are commissioned as a Captain. I was promoted to MAJ while I was in my residency,” Jason says. “I think I was most proud of the rank, not because of what it took to achieve, but there were very few Dental Officers at that time that had the opportunity to spend time with a line unit, deploy, and receive dental specialty training.”
Jason Michel joined the Army after he finished dental school in January of 2003. He left the service in June of 2012. “My dad joined the Army after he finished dental school and said that he had a great experience,” Jason says. “Since I did not have any definitive plans for after dental school, I decided I would try the Army too.” Jason started as a general dentist for four years at Fort Hood, Texas. While he was there, he served as the 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division’s dentist and spent one year in Iraq. While he was deployed in Iraq he received the invitation to attend specialty training upon his return stateside. “When I got home, I was moved to Fort Gordon, Georgia, where I spent two years receiving specialty training to get my certificate in Endodontics,” Jason says. 026 ALT Magazine November 2019
Jason was also awarded the Operation Iraqi Freedom medal. “It reminds me of the time I spent deployed with my 204th C. Co, 2BDE, 4ID family,” Jason says. “My dental assistant, Nestor Lopez, and I spent a year traveling around Iraq to try and provide dental support to our unit and co-located military units. The bond we formed made us family. While we don’t talk all the time, that bond still remains intact now 13 years later. I know it will continue to last.” One funny story that Jason remembers from his time in the military occurred when he was deployed in Iraq. “I photoshopped the face of our 1SGT and Company Commander onto a Lethal Weapon movie poster,” Jason says. “The 1SGT got so mad that he tried to punish Nestor since he could not punish me. Then, the Company Commander had to calm the 1SGT down. Everyone thought it was really funny.” Now, Jason Michel is an endodontist and dentist here in Texarkana, and he joined Disabled American Veterans. He says that his time in the military
continues to impact his life, including the fact that he is still an early riser. “I am still proud of my service and that of other service members. I do not think a day goes by that something from my military days doesn’t come across my mind,” Jason says. “I think anyone with military experience knows that it also makes you develop a deeper appreciation for all our first responders too. They are in harm’s way, too. Seeing the continued selfless service makes me feel pride and hope for our nation.” For Jason, reflecting on the sacrifices of our men and women in the service should be a part of our lives and not just on Veteran’s Day. “I think Americans should take a moment and realize the freedoms we have in the United States of America. We should reflect on everything has been sacrificed to protect everything we typically take for granted,” Jason says. “Thank a veteran. Thank a first responder. These can be tough jobs and as a veteran, I personally enjoy seeing people realizing and thanking the people that protect our freedoms and way of life.”

Ralph Miller enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1940 and served until 1946, followed with ten years of service in the Air Force Reserves. He was motivated to join the military because of his love of flying and the impending World War II. After training, Ralph completed aircraft mechanics school and served ten months in the Panama Canal zone. He was mainly stationed in the U.S., European theatre of operation, and Panama. As an aviation cadet, he completed pilot training before becoming a 028 ALT Magazine November 2019
rated pilot, an instructor pilot, and a B-26 combat pilot in the European theatre. He is proud of the progression from enlisted to flight officer, and 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant. Ralph obtained his Captain rank in the European theatre, earning several medals and citations. Ralph received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the French Legion of Honor. Ralph states, “Being recognized feeds a person’s ego.” When Ralph thinks about his time in the service, he remembers some really important people. His crew in combat, General O.P. Weyland, and Colonel Louis Carrington. He says, “I’m the only one left,” when reminiscing of his tent-mates Edwin DeMouche and Daniel Kardus who he met up with for the last time in 1994. One of the funniest stories from Ralph’s time in the service occurred when he was promoted from co-pilot to pilot. He was trained to be a co-pilot at that time in 1943. His instructor pilot announced they would be flying out over the Gulf of Mexico to do radio work. Ralph stood behind the pilot and read the radio facilities’ manual lying open on the console. Ralph’s pilot was told to find Fort Myer’s radio, the north quadrant, locate the radio beam, and fly to the station. “The poor fellow was all over the sky, so long that the instructor pilot was exasperated with him,” Ralph explained. “The instructor pilot said to him, ‘Get out of the seat.’ Then he turned to me and said, ‘Get in that seat. Can you find the Fort Myers’ radio station?’” Ralph had been reading the manual, so he knew what to do. Ralph found it and flew the beam to the Cone of Silence. The instructor pilot asked, “Can you find home base?” Ralph tuned the correct beam to A.P.B.R. The instructor pilot questioned, “Can you land this plane?” Ralph entered the landing pattern, landed and parked. “The instructor turned to me and complimented me with a ‘good job.’ The next morning, on the bulletin board, my name was listed as the pilot. The pilot of yesterday was now my co-pilot. That’s how it happened”
Ralph says that the military made him into the person he is today. When he left the service, he joined the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the B-26 Marauder Historical Society. For him, the best way to honor veterans is through acknowledgement, recognition and respect. He added “Remember the motto, ‘Never let them forget.’”

Gerald Morgan joined the Army in February 1968, and served until 1971. He says that his ex-wife turned him into the draft board. “It was the best thing she ever did for me,” Gerald says. After training, Gerald’s primary job was a heavy equipment operator and construction engineer. He served the majority of his time in Vietnam and made sergeant in 11 months. He later turned down a direct field commission to 2nd Lieutenant. He also received the Bronze Star. “I don’t feel as though I did anything special to receive this honor,” Gerald says. “I simply was doing my duty and being a good soldier.” 030 ALT Magazine November 2019
Gerald says he was a bit older than some when he went into the service, and he had a great group of guys that he worked with. Unfortunately, he has not remained in close contact with all of them. “When our time was completed, we all just wanted to start our lives, families, and careers so we went to our homes and did that,” Gerald says. “As we get older, I think we try to find each other and those we served with. I have received phone calls and the Facebook world has made finding each other easier.” One memorable experience from his time in the service happened in Lai Khe. “We lived in underground bunkers for eight or nine months, and there was a B-52 raid that was about 10 miles off target putting B-52s dropping within a mile of us,” Mike says. “They were knocking us out of our bed at night. We can laugh about those kinds of things now.” After the military, Gerald became a coach and teacher, but he has since retired. He also joined the American Legion. When he thinks about his time in the service and how it affected him, he says that it made him
more disciplined and organized. “I am also much more patriotic and understanding. After witnessing communism firsthand and seeing those who have no freedom, it makes me more appreciative of our country and those who continue to sacrifice for us to have that freedom,” Gerald says. “Americans can most honor veterans by finding a place in their heart that respects those who have given them their freedom. They can also thank them randomly, not just on days like Veteran’s Day.”

it was the right thing to do after his Boy Scout training and upbringing. In fact, his lifelong friend, Ross Perot, followed him to the Naval Academy as he was Ross’ childhood idol. Josh’s primary job after training at the Academy was in the gunnery department where he became the commanding officer. He also served as safety officer and special services officer. Josh also taught shooting and was in charge of materials handling. Other places he served were Newport, Rhode Island, Florida, and Tsingtao, China. During his service he reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Throughout the years, Josh has kept in touch with his dearest lifetime friends in the military through correspondence, phone conversations, class reunions, and even trips made to their homes and vice versa. Unfortunately, they have all mostly passed on now. He is still a member of the U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and he recently received a pin for his lifetime of support.
Josh Morriss is a retired owner of Offenhauser & Co., an insurance agency. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1946 in the same class as President Jimmy Carter. The two were reacquainted at their 65th class reunion in Annapolis, Maryland, on June 5, 2011. He served from June 5, 1946, to October 17, 1956, when he was honorably discharged. He was in active duty on destroyers in the Atlantic from June 1946 to January 12, 1949, and April 23, 1951, to April 12, 1953. Then, he served in the Naval Reserves. Josh chose to serve his country because he thought 032 ALT Magazine November 2019
Two stories came to mind of his service days. The first story occurred when Josh was at the Academy, where he and his roommate shared the corner room in the largest dorm closest to the outside gate. Their window remained open as a re-entry route for classmates that got back after curfew. This may or may not have been accompanied with cash changing hands. The second story from Josh’s service time was of the rickshaw drivers in China carrying his fellow servicemen and others around the city while they were on leave. It was quite a sight, and he hated having to discipline and remind them of their manners when coming back on ship, but it was in his duties to see to it that order was maintained.
The military ways still affect his life to this day. His closet is still organized in such a way, his dress shoes polished, and his bed made daily as if the Admiral was to do an inspection at any time. He also maintains a routine and order of promptness, tidiness, and proper behavior at all times. Josh feels that a simple thanks is the best way to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day, whether through cards, letters, calls, or in person at celebrations or just personal contact.

Clyde was stationed overseas with several friends and his cousin, but he says that all of them have since passed away. “There’s only a few of us World War II vets left,” Clyde says. One funny story that Clyde remembers from his time in the service was when his friend blew up the latrine. “He was supposed to only put a little gas in the toilets every two weeks,” Clyde says. “Well, he put a lot and blew the whole thing up. It burned to the ground.” Clyde says that his military background greatly affected his life. “It taught me how to care for myself, and it taught me to love law enforcement,” Clyde says. As Veteran’s Day approaches, Clyde remembers all his friends and family that have served. “Thank a veteran,” Clyde says. “I’d do it all over again.”
Clyde Wilborn Shipp joined the Army Air Force in 1944 and served from 1944-1946. “I was drafted into the Army Air Force, but if I was younger, I would go back right now,” Clyde says. “I loved serving my country.” After training, Clyde’s primary job was in military police, and he was stationed in northwest Africa. During his time there, he received his sergeant’s rank and a citation for “expert on rifle.” “I am very proud,” Clyde says. “It was a big accomplishment!” 034 ALT Magazine November 2019

William Spradlin joined the U.S. Navy in January of 1981. He was motivated to join because of the influence of several retired military family members. He served in the Navy until 1992. Now, he is a realtor in Texarkana. “From my years in the military, I learned that diligence in your job and doing the best you can possibly do are two of the best attributes an employee can have,” William says. “The military’s attention to detail and lack of ability to accept the word ‘can’t’ have really been instilled into my blood.” After training, William spent time on several different seagoing commands as a “jack of all trades.” He worked in every department from ship’s 036 ALT Magazine November 2019
maintenance and small boat operations to deck evolutions, including refueling at sea. He worked in mooring the ship to piers and driving the ship as well. He is most proud of earning his E-6 rank. “At the time, it was unheard of for an enlisted person in my field to attain this rank with only eight years of service,” William says. “I also received the Navy Achievement Medal, and it meant so much to me because this was not a participation award. It actually meant something to those who received this award; it was a very hard-earned accomplishment.” William had several friends and mentors in his years of military service that made an impact on him. His two favorites were supervisors: an E-6 who showed him how to become a productive sailor, and a Master Chief Petty Officer to whom William owes his diligence and work ethics. “He taught me that if your subordinates make mistakes, it’s not their fault, it’s our fault for not training them properly,” William says. “I also think of Master Chief Boatswains’ mate, John Ibbareche. He has since passed, but I accredit my military success to his teachings. I also still maintain contact with several of my military buddies via Facebook.”
William says that in his 12 years of service, he saw so many things that he “could write a book.” One funny moment that stands out was an experience with an officer that was a real “stickler” for rules and guidelines. “He was not very well liked by most other crew members, and he did have one serious weakness: he got seasick really easily,” William says. “I was considered a ‘master helmsman’ on my ship. When this officer would give my watch team a hard time, I would take over the ships’ helm. I knew how to make the ship rock back and forth with back and forth rudder movement and still maintain course. I would send him to the bridge wing to chum for sharks on a regular basis!” As we approach Veteran’s Day, William says that the holiday is no different from any other day to the majority of veterans. “The best way to honor a veteran is to remember the sacrifices made by him or her ALL the time. Those who have never served may not fully understand these sacrifices. The sacrifices aren’t always from war or injuries or even life itself. The mental strain placed on a servicemember is something that the average person will never understand,” William says. “I can only speak for myself, but notoriety is not the most common reason a person serves in the military. Pride, dedication, and the love of our country is why they serve. Also, acknowledgement and support of the Veteran Administration are the best ways to honor a veteran at any time.”

We met during the summer of 2013 while home from college, through a mutual friend. For the next few years, we enjoyed hunting and fishing together every chance we got. Since then, we have both completed our bachelor’s degrees and I, Haley, will graduate with my master’s degree in May 2020. Hunter proposed at the same place we met in Doddridge, Arkansas, on September 15, 2018. We were supposed to be going to a festival outside of town, but before I even realized, we were at the place we met. Hunter told me to get out and close my eyes. When I opened my eyes, he was down on one knee! It was a very special day! We are very happy and both enjoying our careers. We can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Lucas worked out at the gym my parents owned in Nashville, Arkansas. We saw each other occasionally in passing, and we were friends on social media, but had never officially met! One day while at work, my mom texted me to ask Lucas Liggin on a date to the movies! I responded, “Are you crazy”? Good thing I listened to my mom because next thing I knew I was on the best first date I had ever had. Ever since that night, we began seeing each other every chance we could! We dated for two years and a few months before Lucas popped the question! We had talked about marriage a lot and knew we would get married. I just had no clue when! We had a late Thanksgiving at my parents’ house the day he asked me to marry him. The whole day he hardly said a word to me; I thought something bad had happened. Around sunset he asked if we could ride over to my Papaw’s pond and read together. As I was about to sit down, he stopped me and said, “Wait Jayci, look over there! It’s a deer”! After not being able to find this deer, I turned back around and there Lucas was on one knee! I squealed, “Yes”! Little did I know, my sister was hiding, taking pictures the whole time!

My first official day as a police officer was in October of 2013. I was very excited and nervous. If someone were going to enroll in the Police Academy, what are three key things you’d like them to know? 1. Trust your Field Training Officer 2. Pay attention to the Penal Code course, learn how to do your research properly! It makes it a lot easier out here if you already have a good, working knowledge of the law. 3. Do not take anything personally, and do not mentally carry your job home with you. Keep home life and work life separate.
What do you wish more people could realize about law enforcement? That we are normal people, just like you. We like going to the movies, going out to eat, playing with our kids, etc. We are no different than anyone else, and we are also members of this community. I also wish people would realize that we care a lot about them.
Tell us what your department does a great job of! My department excels in community policing. We have a great relationship with our citizens and local businesses. I am very blessed that I get to work with my heroes every single day. There is no greater place to work than in Nash!
How do you handle the stress and pressure the job brings? I listen to music. Whenever I need to de-stress, I lose myself in music. I also listen to audiobooks which also helps with destressing.
We have all heard that families play a supportive role in a police officer’s life. How does your family support you? I work nightshift, so my family is extremely helpful in providing childcare for my son. I would not be able to have a career in law enforcement if I did not have my amazing, supportive family!
Reflecting on your time as a police officer, what is one thing this career has done for you in a positive manner? This career has helped me grow and mature, and truly appreciate all the amazing gifts God has given to me. It has given me the best friends I have ever had, and a career that I am very proud of. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else!
What interests do you have outside of law enforcement? I love to read and do theatre! My passion is Broadway musicals and I am often found doing a lot of in-car karaoke! I also am a full time psychology student outside of law enforcement, so when I’m not at work, I’m usually doing homework or spending every second that I can with my awesome son!

This is strictly my opinion and I can’t back up anything with too much fact. Major League Fishing (MLF) just bought out Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) and it's tours. For the 2020 year, there will be few changes in the way the FLW, Costa, BFL, college and high school tournaments operate. Since the death of Irwin Jacobs, the majority owner, and the recent death of T. Boone Pickens, who was a minority owner, FLW was due for some changes. I would look at the FLW tour changing to being the mechanism that Major League Fishing needed as a “feeder.” The BFL has fed the Costa Series, and the Costa has fed the FLW Tour and everything worked well. But now that the driving forces in the FLW organization have passed away, the FLW tournaments likely will have big changes coming. Not all changes will be good and will be met with some shifting in what tournaments people fish. I just hope they don’t downgrade the BFL All American any more than it has been in recent years. Having made three All Americans over the years I have seen it downgraded somewhat as the pro tour took over the spotlight and the grass root BFL tour was sidelined to make the pro tour bigger. I can see this happening again as MLF tries to reshape the pro tours and pushes the grass root anglers, on which the very foundation of tournament fishing is laid, further back down the ladder. Bad deal for the weekend guys.

You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary. •We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers.
