“Some say freedom is a gift placed in our hands by our forefathers. Some say freedom is a human right that none should be denied. Some say freedom is a privilege that can and will be seized if taken for granted. Some say freedom is the key that opens doors otherwise meant to imprison. Some say freedom is power to do, to be, to say, and to accomplish what the oppressed cannot. Some say freedom is a responsibility—a weight to be carried and shared by those willing to protect it. Perhaps freedom is all these things. But in my eyes, I see freedom as a treasure. It is a gem so rare and precious the fiercest battles rage over it. The blood of thousands is spilled for it—past, present, and future. Where true and unblemished freedom exists, it shines with perfect clarity, drawing the greedy masses, both those who desire a portion of the spoils and those who would rob the possessor of the treasure, hoping to bury it away.

Without freedom I am a slave in shackles on a ship lost at sea. With freedom I am a captain; I am a pirate; I am an admiral; I am a scout; I am the eagle souring overhead; I am the north star guiding a crew; I am the ship itself; I am whatever I choose to be.” -- Richelle E. Goodrich

KEEPING IT REAL From The Publisher

Freedom is definitely a gift. So many people have never known the kind of freedom we take for granted. My dad used to tell me I could do anything I wanted to, be anything I wanted to be, I just had to set my mind to the task at hand. That was certainly true. In the great USA, everyone has an opportunity to pick themselves up and be whatever they choose. They just have to want it badly enough. When I was a young girl, I often wondered what my life would be like. I never thought I would be in Texas, the owner of several businesses. Although I had lots of grand ideas, this was not my dream. However, as I look at the many different things I have done with my life, it seems the road has always led to where I am right now. I am so thankful that I have the freedom to do what I want to do. I spend most weekends working with a Vietnam veteran who keeps me occupied telling me stories about what he has done in his life. He, and every other veteran and person currently serving in our armed forces, deserves our respect. If it weren’t for them, we would not have the liberty to choose what we do for a living, have the home we live in, or travel anywhere we choose to go. We would not be able to own property, whether real or personal, or protect that property. I am an ardent believer in the right to own a firearm — which is obvious since I am one of the owners of a gun store and indoor gun range. If it weren’t for all of these men and women fighting for our freedoms, that would not be possible.

CHASING DREAMS From The Editor

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” -- 1 Corinthians 13:13

This issue is all about love, whether it be love for our country, our community, family, friends, or food. Luckily I share a

love for all of these things as well. With the 4th of July approaching, my love for my country tends to stand out. I feel so blessed to live in a country where I am free to love, worship and live how I choose. I am glad to live in America and thankful for all of the men and women serving this beautiful nation who allow these freedoms to continue. As I write this, my boyfriend is currently at drill for the National Guard. Through our relationship, it has come more apparent to me the courage and bravery of these amazing men and women who are willing to fight for us, and the importance of the support for our country and our people for those who serve and for their families. These service men and women who are willing to lay down their lives for our country, for me, are the real heroes. Their love for America, our freedoms, our lives and our families is incredible.

The older I get, the more I realize the importance of relationships. Relationships with family, close friends, significant

others, they are all what keep me strong and going even when the going gets tough. I am lucky to have been blessed with such a caring, loving and supportive family. I am finding more and more how valuable the times we have together truly are. It is up to me to make the best of those times. I am also discovering the value of real, close friendships. Those friends who have truly become family. I am lucky to have as many as I do, as well as a significant other whom I can always count on and am glad to share my life with.

I am also grateful to live in a community that is so supportive of one

another. Whether it’s because of natural disasters, like flooding, charity events, illnesses, deaths, or celebrations of the good times, the people of Texarkana always step up to help those in need and to better our city. I am grateful to be a part of such a giving community. Texarkana’s local business’ thrive because of the backing of its people. Make sure to check out the local eateries and hot spots we have featured this month and support your community.

A Penny For Your Thoughts moving past grief to find happiness again...

WORDS BY Anne Fruge

When tragedy strikes a family, how do they rebuild their lives? How do they move past the grief to find happiness again? When Swan Burrus Moss III and Gay Cunningham Moss lost their seven-year-old daughter, Gayble, in the flood at Albert Pike five years ago, they had to face this gut-wretching question. “If you had told me six years ago that I would lose a child and my life would have to continue on, I would have said that there would be no way I could even get out of bed if that happened to me,” Gay says. “In some ways I have amazed myself. How have I made it this far? When you are put in these situations you just ask yourself, ‘Why? Why? Why?’ But, the truth is, this is just God’s plan ,and I hope I’m playing it out the way He would want me to. In the end, we realized we had a choice: we could crawl up in the fetal position, or we could try to find happiness, and that is what we have chosen to do.” In the hearts and minds of her family, Gayble is still very much a presence. Every year, Gay and Swan take a trip on September 4th to celebrate Gayble’s birthday. Also, the Fifth Annual Gayble Moss Golf and Tennis Tournament to benefit Saint James Day School will be held the first weekend of October at Northridge Country Club. St. James Day School is a very important institution to the family. Gay’s mother, Karen Cunningham-Green, taught there for 27 years, and Gay was a student in her first class. Both Gayble and her brother, Swan Burrus Moss IV, who goes by Burrus, attended St. James Day School. In fact, this year would have been the year that Gayble and her best friend, Kylee Sullivan, graduated from the school. They were honored at the graduation ceremony and roses were left in their chairs. “I have been a part of St. James for 38 years, “ Gay says. “First as a student, then as a daughter of a teacher for 27 years, and now as a parent. I love that all of my children have gotten to go to St. James. The school song says, ‘St. James, where I did spend my childhood days’ and that is the case for me and my children, so we wanted to honor Gayble by creating a scholarship fund in her name so others can experience Saint James Day School too!” Gayble loved playing soccer and sports. She always had a smile on her face, and her family and friends called her an “old soul.” “To have lost Gayble at such a young age, she has touched so many lives,” Karen says. “Gayble lit up the room. Her energy was felt from the second she was in it. She lived life with an urgency and a contagious energy. She reached out to life, that was the way she was. Thinking back on the mature conversations we had, I cannot believe she was only 7.” Karen, who lost her husband last year, recently moved back to Texarkana from Hot Springs to spend more time with the family. The kids call her “Mimi,” and she loves to babysit. “I always visited often, but there was still so much I missed,” Karen says, “I love being a part of their lives on a daily basis instead of just at special occasions. Every day they change so much.” Though Gay’s friends, Grace McGuire and Sarah Jane Paddock, have affectionately nicknamed Gay “Rainbow” because of her bright and cheery nature and her color-filled, artistic world, Gay’s mother, Karen, knows that her daughter has had many hard days. “I admire my daughter,” Karen says. “Many people say that she’s their hero and that she is so strong, and she is.” After their tragic loss, Gay struggled to find moments when she was “truly happy.” She has always loved art, travel, and music, especially Dave Matthews Band. So, she has made sure to see her favorite July 2015

band three to four times a year. “Really, that is not weird in the Dave community, but my friends call me a ‘groupie’” Gay says. “However, as crazy as this sounds, in those three hours that he was playing I remembered what it feels like to just be happy. When you lose a child, you feel that loss all the time, and you take for granted the feeling of happiness. Music was my outlet to escape from that, even just for three hours.” Gay and Swan also draw strength from their church family at First Baptist Moore’s Lane, and many family and friends who cried and laughed and listened with the couple. Their son, Burrus, who graduated from Saint James and will be an eighth grader this year at Texas Middle School where he plays soccer and tennis, has also felt the loss profoundly. “Burrus is such a sweet boy with a tender heart,” Gay says. “Even though he is entering those teenage years when your parents aren’t ‘cool,’ he knows when I’ve had bad days and he is always mindful and sensitive. He reaches out and hugs me more on those days.” Fairly soon after the loss of Gayble, Swan and Gay began talking about having another child. “We never expected

to have another one, but we never just wanted one child; we felt we had so much more to give,” Gay says. “We were both steadfast in our desire, but we weren’t sure it was possible.” Two weeks after they lost Gayble, Gay started having a really bad charlie horse in her calf. Karen made Gay go to see her doctor, DeDee Bingham, who told her that she had blood clots in her calf. It was then that Gay spoke to her doctor and friend about having another child. “I asked her if she thought I was too old!” Gay says. “She told me that it could be something really great, but she also said that maybe we shouldn’t make this decision while we were grieving.” When the couple was first trying to get pregnant with Burrus, they experienced difficulties even though no one could find anything “wrong.” After a year of trying, they saw Dr. Batres in Little Rock. After working with him for nine to ten months, he suggested in vitro fertilization (IVF) through a (clinic? hospital name?) in Nashville, Tennessee. After one round, they found out they were pregnant with Burrus. Eighteen months later, Gay found out that she was pregnant with Gayble! “We used to call her our ‘free baby!’ Gay says. “We didn’t find out the sex of either

of our pregnancies and left it up to surprise. But, we had a boy and a girl, and we didn’t plan on having anymore children. However, we still had embryos frozen from our IVF treatments. We decided as parents to keep them frozen. We were reading about stem-cell research and held on to them in case our children faced any major illnesses later in life. Soon after Gayble’s death we received a bill for our frozen embryos (ironically, this years (?) bill was on Gay’s desk the day of this interview), and it just seemed to happen at the same time as our discussion of having another child.” In October of 2010, Swan and Gay flew to Nashville and talked to the doctors. They decided to try IVF again in February of 2011. Swan and Gay left a day early so that they could enjoy Nashville before their appointment. Leaving early became a blessing in disguise. As they were leaving, a massive snow storm hit, and traffic was at a standstill. They made it to Dallas and were able to fly out the next morning to Nashville and just barely made it in time. Soon after, they found out they were pregnant! Though they had always left the sex of their previous children

to surprise, the family wanted to know this time. Swan, Gay and Burrus gathered in a room at Collom and Carney where Dr. Bingham pulled Burrus aside and told him the sex. He went out into the waiting room filled with family, friends and loved ones to make the big reveal. “Burrus was supposed to hold up lipstick if it was a girl or putty if it was a boy, and it was the longest wait ever,” Karen says. “But I knew from the look on his face, even before he reached for the lipstick, that it was a girl. Everyone was so emotional and crying.” Rivers Young Moss was born on October 12, 2011. She is actually Burrus’ twin, but ten years his junior. Gay and Karen describe her as a “girlygirl” who loves dancing and getting her nails done. “We were ecstatic that it was a girl!” Gay says. “We would have been happy either way, but God knew that I needed a little girl. However, I’m not sure where she gets her girly personality. She told me today before school that she needed her nails painted pink and blue! So, we sat down, and I painted them. We had Gayble who loved soccer and sports, and now we have this little dancer. But, it’s unique because both of my girls are ‘old souls’; they have this maturity and depth, which I love because I was never that way.” Gay says that one thing she loves about Rivers and Burrus is seeing the way they are with each other. Gayble and Burrus were only 18 months apart, but Burrus is nearly ten years older than Rivers. “You should see him carrying this little toddler around,” Gay says. “He is so sweet with her. Honestly, I love to hear them arguing in the house. It’s something I didn’t even realize that I missed until I had it again. Rivers blames Burrus for everything! Burrus can be gone for two days, and Rivers will say, ‘Burrus did it!” Even though our decision to have another child could have gone either way, Burrus has been so great. There has never been a shred of jealousy between those two. They love each other.” As a parent this time around, Gay says it has been a new experience. Both her and Swan are older and feel more “laid back.” “As the mother of a 3 year-old and a 14 year-old, we are at opposite ends of the spectrum!” Gay says. “When I meet the mothers of the other 3 year-olds, most of the time it is their first child, and this is my third. But, when I’m with my younger friends, I don’t feel a real age difference; they have been a blessing. I still have my core set of friends, and now I have this whole other dynamic.” Rivers has grown up knowing about her big sister, Gayble. In fact, she talks about her all the time. Swan and Gay left Gayble’s room intact, and now Rivers plays with her toys, tries on her clothes, and sleeps in her nightgowns. Oftentimes, when someone compliments Rivers on an outfit, she says, “My sister, Gayble, gave me this.” “Gayble is very much alive in River’s world,” Gay says. “We talk about her often, her pictures are out, and her artwork is still hanging up. We wanted Rivers to know Gayble. We have all these videos on the laptop of

her, and Rivers watches those often. But, I don’t think that Rivers is growing up in Gayble’s shadow. They are alike in so many ways, but they have such different personalities. I look at Rivers, and I think that God must have something special planned for her. I mean, look at the course of events that it took to get her here!” Another way the family feels Gayble’s presence is through finding pennies. When Gayble was alive, Karen taught her to pick up pennies. One day when Mimi wasn’t around anymore, she wanted Gayble to see a penny and remember her. “It wasn’t supposed to be the other way around,” Karen says. “It wasn’t supposed to be me picking up pennies and remembering her. Carly Loving told that story at the funeral, and even now, I have friends out of town who message me and say, ‘I saw a penny and thought of Gayble. You don’t know how much Gayble is thought about.’” Since the story is synonymous with Gayble, Rivers also knows it. Gay says that the other day, she found a penny

in the house and said, “Gayble’s been here!” Though the family loves to travel and take vacations to Lake Greeson, Destin, Disney World and California, Karen says that the family doesn’t just look forward to the next big trip or vacation. “Every moment is a treat and a joy. Every day with my family is a gift.” Gay’s favorite quote is ‘Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away,’ and she has a large photo of Gayble with her hands outstretched with that quote on it. ““I felt like we always lived life to the fullest, even before we lost Gayble, but we feel that even more so now,” Gay says. “We make a conscious effort to take it all in and appreciate each moment. What I’ve learned is that most importantly, you can do anything with God’s strength. You can find your happiness again. Surround yourself with love. Don’t take one single second for granted.”

Brothers In Arms “silence will only allow Americans to forget...”

WORDS BY Brooke Ferguson

Vacations, family time, picnics, and fireworks typically find their way into the Rockwell-esque vision of July. The bright colors light up the night sky and children’s faces across the county. I remember watching the fireworks bursting over the top of Central Mall one year as I sat on a blanket-covered grassy hill with my family. I would like to think that I knew why these fireworks were so important to the holiday, but I realize I was far too young to appreciate the gravity of their symbolism. I find myself trying to better appreciate the explosions in the night sky as they represent the vistas of the tired soldiers on Independence Day and on multitudes of nights that men and women have served for our country. This year, I think there is no better way to celebrate the independence of our nation than to tell you the story of a young man catching a cat-nap in a jungle, wrapped around the tube of a big gun in order to keep warm. Isaac “Bobby” Robinson volunteered for service in the United States Army during a time in history that his decision could have meant certain death. Even after entering the service, Bobby volunteered to go to Vietnam ten times until his unit was broken up and he was sent to the jungle. In September of 1968, Robinson stepped back in time onto a land that was not only foreign but seemed to be from the “Tarzan days.” Robinson spent “ a lot of time in the field” because his job was to go out and fix big guns and sighting systems as a part of his Military Occupation Code (MOS) as Fire Control. In April of 1969, a young “spec four” (Specialist 4th class; SP4) by the name of Britt, who also enlisted, showed up for training. Robinson said that the two young men instantly bonded and became friends. He saw Britt as a little brother and he felt that Britt saw him as a big brother. When Robinson, who was now a Sergeant (SGT) E5, would come back in from the field, he took the time to train Britt and show him what to do. Familial bonds are often forged within the fires of the stress of combat. Rare opportunities when the young soldiers can goof around and blow off steam remain critical in creating an atmosphere of support and unity. One such time, is fondly referred to as the “tire story.” Robinson, a self-proclaimed agitator, had Britt changing a big tire on a “deuce and a half” (two and a half ton truck). After Britt had both the flat tire (which was so big that it didn’t actually look flat) and the new one lain out, Robinson distracted him while a friendly accomplice swapped out the two tires. Once Britt was on the other side of the struggle of replacing the tire, Robinson walked up and kicked the tire a little and chuckled as he told Britt that he’d put the flat right back on there. They all had a big laugh at the prank and the lighthearted memory spreads a smile across Bobby’s face as he shares this story. It was often so serious “over there” so moments when men could mentally step out of the jungle were not only rare, but they were cherished. They all knew that they were over fighting for more than their country; they were fighting for the brother standing next to them. This culture of survival made every light-hearted moment a gasp of air as the soldiers sometimes felt they were drowning in the ugliness of war in the jungle. Robinson explained that it was “different then” because there were no “cell phones” and internet or “skype” to help keep soldiers in contact with “the states.” He grows quieter as he explains that he did not speak to his family for a year and a half and that often times the men felt utterly isolated. This isolation caused the soldiers to create their own surrogate family in the jungle. Once, Robinson recalls, they all received care packages. Robinson remembers his was from Clovis, NM. He said the men were all sharing the encouraging letters and the goodies as if they were kids opening gifts. He said that it was one of the “best things to happen” for his and the others’ morale. After a year and a half of little sleep, lots of filth, clothes rotting off of his body from wear and tear, and losing his dog tags to the expanse of the jungle, Robinson left Vietnam and headed for home. As Bobby prepared for the 32 hour flight home and re-entry into the states, he was so happy to leave that he did not realize that due to the surname culture of the military, he didn’t know the first name of his little brother, Britt. Life went on for Bobby Robinson and he came back to Texarkana, as many of young men and women do, despite being determined not to. Being back “stateside” took some adjusting, however. While coming from Texarkana National Bank downtown, someone on the street let a magazine dispenser door slam down with a loud bang. The civilians of Texarkana barely noticed the sound, but nearly all of them noticed the young man crouching down against the building, suddenly realizing that he 22

was not in the jungle as he stood up and dusted himself off. Sometime after Robinson’s life as a civilian was in full swing again, he began to wonder about his brother from the jungle. He often worried that perhaps Britt had only returned to the states in a coffin or whether he returned at all. After all, so many, many young men did not return. Forty-five years after leaving the jungle and his brother, Britt, Bobby Robinson is retired from 36 years of working up the ladder at Smith-Blair enjoying life and “keeping busy” with his wife, Kathy, and his five children and nine grandchildren. Robinson’s loved ones have all heard stories about his best buddy, Britt, throughout the years as he would tell tales of Vietnam and show slides of the holes and the muck in which he lived. Bobby was not always so open about life in Vietnam, however. In fact, initially, he would not talk about it at all. He was often plagued with nightmares and to this day, his family will warn him about movies or documentaries that come out and suggest whether or not he should watch them. Throughout the decades, Robinson noticed a gap beginning to develop between the reality of war and freedom and the generations in America. He began to tell his children and eventually his grandchildren because he began to think, “how [are] people going to know, if we don’t talk about it.” Bobby Robinson became the connection for his children and grandchildren to this volatile time in history that has affected so many Americans. He wants them and all young Americans

to understand the gravity of what so many soldiers from so many wars have experienced. He urges that silence will only allow Americans to forget and stresses how dangerous it is for combat veterans to bottle up their experiences. Everything in our past has the potential to come back if we do not deal with it. This proved to be a certainty when forty years after leaving the jungle, Robinson was contacted by a potential Eagle Scout. As it turns out, the dog tags that he thought were lost to the ugliness of the jungle had made their way back to him, through the efforts of young men. I must admit, when I held this battered, dull dog tag in my hand and rubbed my fingers across the stamped information of this veteran, my eyes filled with tears of gratitude for what Bobby Robinson and so many other men and women have done for the citizens of America. I was moved at the thought of these young boys in this foreign land fighting for each other, for their country, and for me, a young woman who didn’t even exist while they fought. Seeing his long lost dog tag reinforced his resolve to find his friend and keep telling his story. The more he involved his family in on his life in Vietnam, the more still Britt would be on his mind. He remembers one of his daughters searching through the vast list of men who were killed in action during Vietnam and being relieved that Britt did not make the list. Bobby knew Britt was from Florida, so he pulled down the atlas and looked at every

city and started searching the white-pages looking for the surname Britt. Robinson says he has “put in about 3000 hours on the computer” and looking through the atlas in search of his friend. He knew that the men he was with called Britt “Alvin” sometimes, so he spent decades searching for Alvin Britt. He even wrote a letter to Veteran’s Affairs (VA).Finally, Bobby said to his children and grandchildren, “anybody that locates him tonight, it’s worth two-hundred bucks.” That is when he handed the search over to his children. One daughter, Amanda Rossum, was not present, but he knew that he better call her and let her in on the chance to join the search. Amanda told him then that she “had a mission.” She would call him often and try to ask more questions and sift through more information. Eventually, Robinson was able to speak with another fellow veteran, Sgt. Robert Paoa who was with both Robinson and Britt in Vietnam. It was then that Robinson discovered that Britt’s first name was not Alvin, but was Alvie. This changed everything because all these years the searches were for the wrong name. He shared this with his daughter. Robinson takes a moment to collect himself as he shares with me the moment when his daughter called him and told him that she found Britt, but now he just goes by Ed. He had dropped to his knees under the gravity of finding this longlost brother. Before long. he was on a lengthy phone call with a friend he had to leave the country to meet. “They talked over

each other because they were so excited,” Robinson’s wife recalls with a grin. After 46 long years of separation, Robinson flew to Mount Pleasant, SC to see the face of his “little brother.” Upon seeing each other again, the two men embraced, both moved by the friendship they forged nearly half a century ago in a foreign land with their lives on the line. Britt, who used the GI Bill to go to college is now a microbiologist, said that Robinson was his “protector. He was like [his] older brother.” Britt feels that Robinson elected to stay on tour for an additional six months in order to watch over him until he was “old enough and crusty enough to be able to survive.” They fondly flip through their old battalion yearbook as they begin their reunion weekend. These two men, their bond, their paths, their choices, all represent the true American dream. They engaged in conflict so that our little boys and girls over here could chase the ice cream truck on a hot day in July for red, white, and blue firecracker of their own, sure to stain their plump cheeks as they race the sun for the spoils of summer. These men have their own families, their own generations, that enjoy the freedoms they bought with their sweat and determination. Americans are indebted to all the soldiers who fought, came home, died, remain missing. These men are the embodiment of courage, sacrifice, and love in a time when those qualities are few and far between.

“Representatives from the A&M System schools who attended the conference heard these findings loud and clear and like A&M-Texarkana are ready to explore greater use of prior learning assessment,” said Lisa Myers, A&M-Texarkana BAAS coordinator and instructor of Adult Education.

Meeting needs of adult learners is focus of conference for A&M System schools at A&M-Texarkana WORDS BY STACY GLOVER & LISA MYERS About 87 percent of Americans think students should receive college credit for knowledge and skills gained outside the classroom. Fortunately for students in the four-state region, Texas A&M University-Texarkana has taken the lead in developing successful initiatives for nontraditional students who desire bachelor’s degrees. A&M-Texarkana welcomed seven schools and organizations to campus June 2 for Prior Learning Assessment in Action, a day of collaborative sessions on how to better serve adult students at the university level. Participants included the Texas A&M University System, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, Texas A&M University-West Texas, Texas A&M University-Central Texas, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christ, Prairie View A&M University and the Council of Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). The conference focused on building and managing a growing prior learning assessment (PLA) program, as many A&M System schools have begun or are beginning their own PLA programs following the lead of A&MTexarkana. Breakout sessions focused on curriculum design, degree administration and marketing. PLA is a term used to describe learning gained outside a traditional academic environment, such as working, participating in employer training programs, serving in the military, studying independently, volunteering or doing community service, and studying open source courseware. The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) program at A&M-Texarkana has been successfully supporting adult learners through PLA for almost 40 years and is now experiencing great success through a partnership with the A&M System and CAEL. Rusan McNeal, director of partnership development for CAEL, shared a startling statistic about Texas: “Six million people in the state of Texas have some college in their background but for varying reasons have not been able to complete their degrees.” 50

McNeal also shared recent findings from the 2014 Study of the American Public’s Opinion on Higher Education; mainly, Americans have some very strong opinions about education after high school: • 96 percent say it is somewhat or very important for adults in this country to have a degree or professional certificate beyond high school. • 94 percent say it is somewhat or very important to increase the proportion of Americans with a degree or professional certificate beyond high school. • 93 percent say that it will be just as important or more important in the future to have a degree or professional certificate beyond high school in order to get a good job. • 78 percent agree or strongly agree that a good job is essential to having a high quality of life. • 19 percent agree or strongly agree that they are confident that having only a high school diploma can lead to a good job. • 79 percent of adults in the U.S. say they do not think education beyond high school is affordable for everyone in this country who needs it. • 80 percent agree or strongly agree that colleges and universities need to change to better meet the needs of today’s students. The last finding shared by McNeal is that many adults, while they believe in the value of a college degree, do not take the steps to earn the degree because of the loss or disregard of past learning experiences.

“What I have learned over the past year is that schools want to offer PLA opportunities to their students, but they are unsure of how to get a program off the ground and how to administer it once it is in action.” Last year, A&M-Texarkana joined a partnership with the A&M System and CAEL to promote prior learning assessment for nontraditional students. Two other schools, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Prairie View A&M University, also joined the initiative. “That is what this conference addressed: PLA in Action, a behind the scenes look at our program here at Texarkana that has been successfully serving nontraditional students since 1978,” Myers explained, echoing the passion of Dr. Glenda Ballard, dean of the College of Education and Liberal Arts, who shared A&M-Texarkana’s history with adult students. “A&M-Texarkana has a special place in its heart for the adult student, and that sentiment is only set to grow as the university continues to grow,” Dr. Ballard said. For more information on the PLA or the BAAS, contact Lisa Myers at 903-223-3133 or lmyers@tamut.edu or visit http:// tamut.edu/Adult.html.

Should you roll over your 401(k) to an IRA? Most workers don’t do anything with the money in their 401(k) when they switch jobs or retire. That could be a big mistake. You may think it will keep your financial life simple, but simplicity may be harder to achieve when you have several 401(k) plans from various employers. “I’d say 100 percent of the time, when a person has a choice of staying in a 401(k) or rolling to an IRA, they should roll it over to an IRA. You go from a limited investment venue to an unlimited number of investment opportunities that open up,” said Peter Mallouk, president and chief investment officer of Creative Planning Inc., recently named the No. 1 fee-only wealth management firm by CNBC.com. Here are the main advantages of rolling over a 401(k) to an IRA: Investment choice. With an IRA, thousands of investment choices are available to you: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, REITs, alternative investments. The average 401(k) offers about 20 funds, according to research from the Investment Company Institute and BrightScope. Flexibility and control. If you find that a fund in your 401(k) is not performing well, you may not be able to find another investment option to switch to as easily as you can with an IRA. The flexibility that you have in trading and changing investments within an IRA makes it easier to tailor your retirement account to meet your investment goals. Wealth transfer. An IRA generally allows you to name multiple or contingent beneficiaries—or even a trust as a beneficiary. If you’re married, federal law says your spouse is automatically 52

the beneficiary of your 401(k)—and your spouse must sign a waiver to let you change to another beneficiary. If you’re single and haven’t named a beneficiary, then the account will go to your estate. Yet there are some other disadvantages that may make leaving your money in a 401(k) more attractive:

It’s not just a pool. We’re building memories. Serving the Ark-La-Tex and surrounding areas, including: Texarkana, Magnolia, Broken Bow, Mt. Pleasant, Hope, Arkadelphia & Hot Springs!

Higher fees. IRA investors sometimes pay more fees than they would in 401(k) plans. If you choose more sophisticated investment options, they may be more expensive than your old 401(k) investments. Plus, add up the fees you’ll pay an investment advisor or broker to suggest investments, if you don’t choose the investments on your own, to see if the benefits outweigh the costs. What’s in your best interest? Unlimited investment choices and the ability to seek advice from a broker or another financial professional can come with some bigger risks. “With a 401(k), you have more protections. You have a plan fiduciary who must operate the plan in your best interest to the extent that they can determine that. You also have regulations on fees so you know the fees on the investment options that are in your 401(k) plan,” said Charles Jeszeck, a director of education, workforce and income security at U.S. Government Accountability Office. Those provisions could soon govern IRAs too. This spring, the Labor Department issued a proposed rule that would require all advisors who offer retirement advice to put their clients’ interests first, which would greatly impact IRA owners and their advisors. In the meantime, if you are seeking advice from a financial professional, registered investment advisors are already required to follow the “fiduciary standard.” Visit the SEC website to check out your advisor. WHY ADOPT A DOG? THE MANY WHYS OF RESCUE WORDS FOR TEXARKANA ANIMAL LEAGUE BY NOMI BERGER

Why adopt a dog or pup? Why not buy one from an ad on the internet or from a pet store? Why not buy one from a breeder? There are many reasons — all of them humane. The growth of the internet has spurred the growth of ads selling pets. But it also provides anonymity to a more insidious growth: that of puppy mills and backyard breeders. It helps them avoid accountability when they sell unhealthy or mistreated pets to unsuspecting, over-eager buyers. And it confirms the axiom: “buyer beware.” Each time a dog is bought from an ad on the internet, a homeless dog is left without a home. Many pet stores rely on both puppy mills and backyard breeders. Like the internet, they rely on impulse buying. A child ogles a playful puppy through a pane of glass, and that old song, “How Much Is That Doggy in the Window?” begins. Few parents can refuse the insistent “please!” of their child. Each time a puppy is bought from a pet store, a surrendered dog languishes in a shelter. It may seem safe to buy a puppy from a breeder. But there are no laws regulating who can and cannot breed. There are no inspections of their facilities. Even a certificate from a recognized kennel club means only that the breeder has “agreed” to its code of ethics. A piece of paper is simply that: a piece of paper. 64

ALT Magazine

July 2015

Each time a dog is bought from a breeder, an abandoned dog moves closer to death in a pound. Why, then, adopt a dog that has been rescued? There are thousands of healthy, happy and balanced dogs available from hundreds of rescue organizations across the country. Contrary to popular belief, they include purebreds as well as cross-breeds and mixed breeds. And for those intent on a specific breed, there are rescue groups specializing in just one breed. To adopt a dog is to save that dog’s life. Rescue organizations are usually the last refuge for abandoned and abused dogs, surrendered and senior dogs. They’re often a dog’s only escape from a puppy mill, shelter or pound. These rescued dogs are placed in loving foster homes, where they’re socialized with people and other animals. They’re spayed or neutered, updated on all vaccinations and micro chipped. They receive whatever veterinary care they need, and are either trained or re-trained before they’re deemed ready to be put up for adoption. And everything is included in the rescue’s modest adoption fee. It’s said that saving a dog makes that dog doubly grateful. By extension, then, anyone who saves a dog will be doubly blessed. What better reasons could there be to adopt a dog?

In order to reduce the number of unwanted animals and the euthanization of them at the shelter people need to spay/neuter their pets. The Texarkana Humane Society has a program to help individuals do this and urge everyone to get involved and tell your neighbor, family, and friends to be responsible and do their part in putting a stop to this problem here in our city.
