From the Publisher... Every new year brings changes and challenges. You can either embrace those or fight them. This month we highlight 19 people who we believe are going to embrace them and make a difference. For my family, the changes will definitely be a challenge as well. Thirty-two years ago, a beautiful baby was born into our family. She was a tomboy through and through. The prissy little girl I wanted wasn't quite that -- in fact, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became a staple at our home for years. She loved to skateboard, ride her bike, ice skate -- pretty much anything that could end up in a crash of some sort with bruises and cuts. It was our life. When she was 16, she decided she wanted to do a pageant. She owned no dresses, no high heels, no make-up -- nothing that would help her with that endeavor. She was determined. So we sought out the appropriate people to help her and she learned how to do lots of things pageant. She learned how to walk, how to go into a room and capture the attention of everyone there, how to present a talent on stage and how to teach children. She learned interview skills -- oh the money we spent on lessons for that, which I thought would never pay off. After a year of learning, she won a crown. What a day that was! That crown would grace her head for two years. She became a proponent for vehicle safety. She got involved with MADD and made tons of school visits, from elementary to high school. She was determined to help others learn how to be safe in a car. Buckling those seat belts was important. She had friends who had been in wrecks and hurt critically or killed, and she wanted to make sure others knew how to keep that from happening to them. She wanted to make a difference. When she left and went to college, I thought my heart would break. But she wasn't far away, and with cell phones, we talked regularly. She had always had an interest in law and considered law school, getting a degree in both political science and mass communications. But when it came time for graduation, she decided law school wasn't for her. So she came home and went to work for me. Photography, magazine work and eventually a gun range. Even with her degree in mass communications, she never felt like it was her purpose in life. She did an amazing job, but it wasn't her dream. It was mine or her husband, Marshall's. After 11 years, she has finally chosen what she wants to do: become a Texas State Trooper. If any of you have even applied for that position, you know it is a year long experience. She applied in January of last year, and in January of this year, she will be leaving to go to academy. She is so excited! I have mixed emotions. I know she is very capable of doing the job. I know she can learn and do whatever is thrown at her. I have seen her do it her whole life. But I know she will be away and she has always been by my side. People say the best thing you can do for your children is give them a role model so that when the time comes to fly, they soar. I have tried to do that for her and it is her turn now. She will be doing what she has essentially spent her life doing -helping others and teaching them about safety and responsibility. As much as I know I will miss her, I know this is where she is supposed to be. Jaclyn Gooding, you are my hero. You will soar in this new career and I know you will make a difference. Some little girl in the future will follow your footsteps because you had an impact on her life. (And hopefully some little boys will, too.) I love you. So although you are not one of the 19 to Watch in '19, I will be watching you and I am sure others will, too. Please say a prayer for all of our first responders as they go into a new year. As for this office, we will do our best to support them, too! May God bless you and yours in the coming year.

Whitni Allen

Fitness Nutrition Specialist and Co-Owner of Heat It Up Whitni Allen and her husband, Bryant, decided to start Heat It Up because they have a passion for food, fitness, and family. Heat It Up is a meal prep company focused on providing tasty, convenient, healthy meals. “We take care of the shopping, cooking and cleaning, which adds hours back to your busy life so that you have time to focus on what is most important to you,” Whitni says. “We offer a new menu every week with different breakfast and main meal options so you never tire of the same food. We offer customization to find the best meals for you. We provide support and guidance on with your diet, and we will help you set up your diet based on your personal preferences.” Though it can be challenging to open up your own business, Whitni and Bryant are doing what they love every day. Whitni says she doesn’t have much free time anymore, but it doesn’t matter because when she’s doing what she loves, every day feels like a day off. “My greatest struggle and accomplishment are one in the same: understanding that starting a business is risky and so scary and also beautiful and exciting,” Whitni says. “We also realized that it shouldn't be easy to be amazing. It's the things you fight for and struggle with that become most valuable and totally worth it.” When Whitni gets up every morning, she gets coffee first. Next, she works out because she has found that gives her a more positive energy and feeling of accomplishment. Then, her and Bryant get ready, feed the dogs, and drive the girls to school. After that, Whitni and Bryant spend the majority of the day planning meals and visiting with customers. To end the day, they take the girls to basketball practice or dance, and then spend family time at home.

Submitted Photo 012 ALT Magazine | January 2019

When Whitni is not working or spending time with family, she is at home baking or experimenting with new recipes. “One of the most memorable moments in my career is being so exhausted from cooking meals that I almost couldn't think straight,” Whitni says, “but I was never mad or sad.

I really love sleep; it's one of my favorite things, but in that moment I was so happy to be able to do what I love with Bryant, the one person I want to go through this life with.” For Whitni, what sets Heat It Up apart from other businesses is their desire to provide individual care to every customer. “It's very rare to find someone that genuinely cares about you, that wants to see you achieve all your goals, that wants to help you grow as a person and to be by your side every step of the way,” Whitni says. “That is Heat It Up. That is why we are here.” The other unique aspect of Heat It Up is that the food can be customized for any number of diets or personal goals. “Alexandra K. Trenfor says, ‘The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don't tell you what to see.’ I love this life advice, and I think that it can be applied to any aspect of life. There is never one way to do anything. We have customers who are keto, others who count calories, others are vegetarian; we are here to help all of them meet their goals whatever their diet may be,” Whitni says. “I want you to know that Heat It Up is not about me. It is about YOU! And how we can help you reach your goals!”

In 2019, Whitni’s goals include pushing herself personally. “In 2018 I have learned that it is okay to take time to work on yourself, and I competed in my very first NPC bikini competition. In 2019 I want to really focus on me, push myself, grow, and really see what I can do,” Whitni says. “As far as ten years from now, while I am excited for the future, I prefer to live in and enjoy every moment.”

1. What three words best describe you? “Ambitious, naturally shy and independent.” 2. What is your motto? “Life motto: Be supportive. Listen to other's ideas, celebrate their victories and remind them of their importance after their failures.” 3. What is your favorite food? “My favorite food is simple! I love oatmeal with peanut butter!” 4. What is your favorite past time? “When we aren’t working, we love to take our dogs, Christoper and Otis, for a walk. I love dogs!” 5. What advice do you have for others? “My advice to give to others about becoming successful is to do what makes you happy. Be patient and humble. Keep moving forward and know that all the hard work you are putting in will produce the results you are looking for. Do not give up.”

Malori Brooke Carlow

Sports Reporter for Dallas Sports Fanatic and D210 Sports TV When Malori was in college, she found out she has a rare heart condition. Malori is one of very few in the world who is missing their Inferior Vena Cava (IVC). Finding out the news halted her dance career and left her unsure of what her future would hold. She was always interested in sports, but she never knew how she would make that a career for herself. “After I found out about my heart, I was approached by a member of the social media team at The University of Texas at Tyler. I was asked if I would be interested in being the sideline reporter for the athletic department,” Malori says. “Needless to say, it came at a very much needed time of my life. Ever since then I haven’t looked back. I knew the moment I began, this is what I wanted to spend my time perfecting; to be the next top sideline reporter for the NBA.” Malori graduated from The University of Texas at Tyler in two years with a Bachelors of Science degree in Speech Communication and two minors in Sports Communication and Psychology. “I loved my time in school, but I wanted to finish so I could focus on bettering myself for my career,” Malori says. Right now, Malori reports for Dallas Sports Fanatic where she covers the G-League team to the Dallas Mavericks. She also reports for D210 Sports TV where she covers the Dallas Mavericks and the SMU men’s basketball team. On game days, Malori’s day starts early. “After my morning workout, I get busy preparing my notes and research for the upcoming game. Then, I start getting ‘camera ready’ and head to the arena I will be working at that night. Once at the game, I go straight to the court for pregame notes,” Malori says. “During the game, I watch and keep tabs on important plays that happen that will help build my post game report. Once the game comes to an end, I head to the coaches' press conference and player locker room for sound bites. Once everything is concluded, I go back to the court for a post game report on the game.”

Photo courtesy of: Shelby Soape 016 ALT Magazine | January 2019

In November, Malori was given the opportunity to cover the two time NBA Champions: the Golden State Warriors in the matchup with the Dallas Mavericks.

“The entire night I was on cloud nine,” Malori says. “Having this amazing opportunity to not only ask Coach Steve Kerr a question in the post game press conference, but also getting to meet and speak with my all time favorite NBA player, Draymond Green, was the icing on the cake.” For Malori, the most important part of her job is knowing what she is talking about whether that is the game, the players, stats, etc. “Being a female in a male dominated workplace we are watched and criticized on every little detail,” Malori says. “I always do my best to be prepared before each game, so I release my best content.” The best advice Malori has ever recieved is to be patient with the process and focus on bettering yourself. “I’ve always struggled with not giving myself enough credit. The saying, ‘You are your own worst critic’ has always applied to me,” Malori says. “But, I think it is important to stop and take note of what you are accomplishing in the ‘now,’ and to think about how far you have come and what you have done to get there.” Malori’s biggest support system is her family. “They are constantly there for me through everything I do,” Malori says. “With two loving parents and a little brother who has become my best friend I would say I am very blessed.” Since moving to Frisco several months ago, Malori has not found a charity to work with. In college, her sorority Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy was Domestic Violence Awareness. “I loved being involved with raising funds for the East Texas Crisis Center. Plus, having events on campus to get students involved and raise awareness was a great feeling,” Malori says. “Over the years, I have worked closely with Give Kids the World as well as Children’s Miracle Network. Since being diagnosed with a rare heart issue, the American Heart Association is one that I can see myself getting involved with, as it's something that is close to my heart.” When Malori isn’t working, she loves to travel and see new places. “I have never been one who likes to stay in one place for long. I enjoy being exposed to new cultures and ways of thinking,” Malori says. “I cannot imagine spending my time any other way, well, except taking naps with my pup, Izzo. I love to watch movies I’ve seen a million times, so it doesn’t matter if I sleep.” In the future, Malori hopes to continue to follow opportunities through sports reporting. In 10 years, she wants to be excelling in her career. She would also love to be working for NBA TV and loving every minute of her job. “This is my first full season covering an NBA team, so hopefully next year more opportunities come my way no matter where they will be,” Malori says.

1. What is your New Year’s Resolution? “I believe I stopped making these a few years ago. They are not something that tend to be followed through. Instead I try to live each day like it is the New Year. Why start then when you can start now?” 2. Who is your personal idol? “Kristen Ledlow. Someone who I spent the past summer working with to improve myself and perfecting my work for sports reporting. She not only embodies the person I model my skills after, but she is personable and has great morals.” 3. What is your favorite TV show? "I love New Girl, The Office, Criminal Minds, and of course Friends. I do 'binge watch' different series and right now that is Mad Men." 4. What is your best advice for others? “Never give up on what you want in life. Work hard to achieve your goals. Take every opportunity big or small because you never know what will lead to greatness.” 5. What is your favorite food? “I tend to be a picky eater but I do enjoy trying new things. Right now I am hooked on sushi, more specifically sashimi.”

Jared Brandon Carver Financial Analyst at Stone Bank

Jared pursued a career in finance because he always had a “knack for numbers.” When the position at Stone Bank opened up, Jared knew it would be a great opportunity. “I wanted to work as a financial institution that acted as a positive agent in the communities they served,” Jared says. “The most memorable moment in my career was really my first day at my current job. I had stepped into a role previously filled by someone with years of experience and I wasn’t even out of school yet. So you could tell my new boss was cautiously optimistic, so he essentially handed me a big project as test. It was scary and exciting and kind of set the stage for all that came thereafter.” Jared’s day starts with a walk with his English bulldog. Then, a day at work can be dramatically different each day. Sometimes, Jared is in a back office crunching numbers all day. Other days can be collaborative as Jared works with coworkers at the bank on larger projects. “It’s that unpredictability with each day that keeps work fun,” Jared says. “Banking is really important to everyone, but they get a bad rep sometimes. It’s really what keeps the engine of American ingenuity working. Everybody needs a good banker.” In his life so far, Jared counts his biggest accomplishment as graduating with his bachelor’s degree. He felt like he had been handed the keys to adulthood, and he was ready to take the wheel. But now, Jared is studying for his CPA exam. His goal for 2019 is to pass it. “Getting my CPA will kind of wrap up my educational career. So my goal for 2019 is essentially to take my last standardized test EVER,” Jared says.

Photo courtesy of: Mark Matthews Photography 018 ALT Magazine | January 2019

Jared grew up in a family that was really small on his mother’s side, but a big Catholic family on his dad’s. He “had the best of both worlds.” Because he was an only child, Jared has always been really close to his mom. “My parents have always been incredibly supportive of me,” Jared says. “My family is an open, loving, safe

space and I feel so fortunate for it. I also really idolized my Granny. She was a kind, curious, and upbeat woman who was good at turning all of life’s lemons into lemonade.”

good job at this – and I’m getting better,” Jared says. “In the journey of life, the stuff and people you surround yourself with are representative of yourself. Make sure it’s a good statement.”

Jared’s biggest struggle in life has been becoming comfortable in his own skin. “I’m a very anxious person, and growing up gay takes a certain emotional toll,” Jared says. “It’s getting over that. Embracing your own weirdness and realizing your true self is your best self that has been a struggle through my young adult life.” When Jared isn’t working or studying for his CPA exam, he has always enjoyed helping local causes. Jared believes that citizens really have the biggest impact with local organizations. In the future, he wants to get more involved in helping shelter animals get placed. Jared also loves to hike and take naps on the couch with his English bulldog, Winston. In ten years, Jared sees himself traveling the world. “I’d like to have traveled to every continent,” Jared says. “I could really see my partner and I being the modern equivalents of nomads. We’d always be on the move.” For Jared, it’s always been really important to surround himself with good people. “You kind of soak up the ethos of those around you to a certain degree. Make sure that all the stuff you’re taking in is good. In my life, both personally and professionally, I think I’ve done a

1. What is your life motto? “Travel light. By this, I mean you have to strip out all those unimportant things that distract from your happiness. If something’s not adding to your life, don’t hold on to it. That can mean possessions, jobs, people.” 2. What is your favorite past time? “Music. I’m way more into music than TV. I love searching through Spotify for new music. It’s always fun to find new artists - especially if they open your ear to an entirely new genre or sound.” 3. What is your favorite food? “Street tacos.” 4. What is your New Year’s Resolution? “To stay in touch with friends better, especially the ones that no longer live nearby.” 5. What is the best advice you have ever received? “Success doesn’t come in big ‘ah ha’ type moments. Success comes with the little things you do each day to make yourself better.”

Patricia Cunningham

Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Red River Federal Credit Union Patricia got into her occupation after getting a degree in marketing. While in college at A&M Texarkana, she also worked on campus. “I always seemed to work in a non-profit or not for profit industry,” Patricia says. “We ended up back in Texarkana after our son was born, and I started working at LifeShare Blood Center which led me to Red River Federal Credit Union. The overall theme of my career has always been in line with the main credit union philosophy of ‘People helping people.’” Every day at Patricia’s job is different. Some days she might work at a vendor booth somewhere at one of their 30 branches, and other days she might help at one of their high school kiosks. She also assists with teaching a financial literacy class, holds enrollment for membership, or works in the office. “No two days are the same,” Patricia says.

022 ALT Magazine | January 2019

Patricia’s most memorable moment in her career was when she was awarded the Business and Marketing and Business Development Professional of the Year by Cornerstone CU League. One of her greatest accomplishments has also been helping the Credit Union win the ALT Reader’s Choice award five years in a row. “I wish more people knew that Red River Credit Union strives to be the primary financial institution for the members while working hard to protect members' data and their money. RRCU is here for all our members. We do right by our

member-owners,” Patricia says. “We get to know our members, and we want to see them succeed.” Patricia’s biggest support system is her family. The best advice she has ever received is, “Money is only a tool. The power is family.” She has been married to Hunter for 15 years, and they have one son, Cade, who is 13-years-old. They also have a “bagle,” which is a beagle/basset hound mix named Ariel. If Patricia has free time, she spends it with her family. “My goal for the next ten years is to have full financial freedom to be able to visit our son while he’s attending college, hopefully at A&M. We would love to go for every home game!” Patricia says. “Right now, if I’m not at home cooking something, I’m usually doing something for Boy Scouts, taking my son somewhere, or doing some sort of volunteer event with other Credit Union staff. Andrea “Andi” Dickson Darby

Senior Account Executive and Event Manager for Townsquare Media Andi wanted to be in sales and loved events, so her current occupation is the perfect combination for her passions. The best advice she ever received was to “Plan your work; work your plan.” This motto has helped Andi achieve her goals. For her, helping clients increase their business, their bottom line and increase customers are the best parts of her job. One of the most memorable moments in her career was being honored with the President’s Club for Townsquare Media. When Andi is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family. “My very hard working husband, Bob, and I have been married forty-three years. We have three wonderful kids, Margaret, Robby and Kimi, and our six great grandkids, Mikaela, Ericka, Emma, Cole, Waylon and Presley are the loves of my life,” Andi says. “My four siblings and their kids and grandkids are crazy, lovable and full of it, just like my kids and grandkids. When we have free time, we go to grandkids' ball games, garden, clean and make things.” Though every day is different, a typical day in Andi’s life involves getting up at 4:30 a.m., giving treats to their three dogs, playing SkipBo with her husband while drinking coffee, and getting to work by 6:30 a.m. Then she finishes paperwork, orders, writes scripts, sends emails, attends sales meetings, makes more phone calls and attends more meetings. In the evening, she likes to cook dinner, have some wine, play Skipbo with her husband, watch a little TV and work on projects. Andi’s 024 ALT Magazine | January 2019

advice for others is to “Make each day better than yesterday, be happy and be proud of what you can accomplish.” One of Andi’s favorite pastimes is shopping for bargains that can be used at remotes and events. She finds great auction items for the charities she gives to: Harvest Regional Food Bank, Hospice of Texarkana, Christus St Michael Foundation, Opportunities Inc., Boys and Girls Club, For the Sake of One, Randy Sams Outreach Shelter, and Heart Ball. It’s also important for Andi to give back to the community. She considers one of her greatest accomplishments becoming a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary. She also serves on the board of Harvest Regional Food Bank, Wilbur Smith Rotary, and Rotary Youth Leadership. She serves at events like Wine and Jazz Taste of Texarkana with Harvest Regional Food Bank, Big Bass Classic with Opportunities, Inc., Live United Bowl for United Way of Greater Texarkana, Rotary’s Public Safety Officer’s Banquet and Teacher’s Banquet, RYLA Leadership Camp, Boys and Girls Club, and Great Texarkana Duck Race.

Todd Jason Fore Recently Retired Lieutenant with Bowie County Sheriff’s Office and Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Place 2 in Bowie County

Todd Fore’s desire to help others started in his childhood. His role model and mother, Larue Shilling, taught him the importance of helping others, and he applied these principles to his 20 plus years in law enforcement. “I grew up wanting to be a police officer,” Todd says. “My mom not only raised my brothers and I, she also instilled values in us that taught us to work and drive to do any and everything you can for family and everyone around you.” Recently retired, Todd is a shift commander for the patrol division of the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office. “I believe in working hard for our community, so as a commander, I still answer calls for service, conduct traffic stops, effect arrests and generally do what I can to make our community safe,” Todd says. “The best advice I ever received is to always treat people the way you would want to be treated, and remember that 95 percent of the people that law enforcement comes into contact with are good people that are just having a bad moment.” One of the most memorable moments of Todd’s career is the time that he watched and helped two of the deputies under his command, Kenny McMillen and Michelle Carrier, go into a burning house, drag out the unresponsive homeowner and help bring her back to life. “That woman is still alive today because of their heroism,” Todd says. “It’s times like that when you become most proud because no one goes to work or on a call expecting to save a life, although you want to. When the time comes, you just act, you don’t think about it, and it’s those great times you always try to remember.” 026 ALT Magazine | January 2019

Todd recently made a change to his career. He will now serve as Justice of the Peace in Precinct 1 Place 2 in Bowie County. “After more than 20 years of Law Enforcement and with Judge ‘Hoot’ Hadaway retiring, my wife and I, after much consideration and prayer, decided that becoming Justice of the Peace would be a great and logical move to make to continue serving the community while still providing for the family,” Todd says. When Todd isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He is married to Joanna and has two sons, Jason and Colby. He also has one daughter-in-law, Samatha, who is married to Colby, and two grandsons, Steven and Luke. “My greatest accomplishment is taking care of my family,” Todd says. “When I have free time, I like spending time with my family and friends, camping and boating at the lake and just plain trying to find ways to have fun and enjoy life.” Todd’s New Year’s resolution is to better himself and help as many people as possible. Todd is the president of the Bowie County Dive Team, and he tries to give to as many beneficial organizations as possible. “I want to continue self improvement

and create a legacy that will make generations after me proud,” Todd says. “I also want to create an environment in the Justice of the Peace Office for the citizens I serve that will be worthy for the respect of the citizens and voters of Bowie County who have allowed me to serve in this capacity. I am very blessed, fortunate and thankful that I have been allowed to work in the different capacities that I have been able to, and I appreciate all of the opportunities that I have received.”

1. What three words would you choose to describe yourself? “Dedicated, loyal, giving.” 2. What do you feel is the most important thing about your business? “Being fair to everyone.” 3. What is your life motto? “Treat people right.” 4. What is your favorite TV show? “The Profit.” 5. What advice could you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? “Work, Work, Work. Do right, do right by others, do right by family. Always remember this order: God, family, job.”

Julie Ann Furlow

Owner of Julie’s Deli, Inc. Julie Furlow grew up with grandparents that owned a country grocery store called Shackleford’s Grocery in Ogden. Julie loved being there with them, so after eleven years of teaching, Julie decided to follow her passion, and in 1996, Julie’s Deli was born. “My greatest accomplishment is keeping Julie’s open for 22 plus years and growing from a little lunch place to a gourmet food market, bakery, and caterer,” Julie says. The best business advice Julie ever received was to take care of her employees and customers, and for two decades, Julie has tried to exemplify that in her business. While making delicious food that keeps the customers coming back, Julie also wants to celebrate special moments with them. “The most important thing about the Deli is our high standards of customer service and food! We love getting to know our customers and their families and being part of their traditions,” Julie says. “Our 20 year anniversary was special! A lot of former employees sent me messages and stopped by to celebrate along with many customers that remembered when I first opened. We've catered events that have brought a lot of laughs and were definitely memorable moments!” Julie is up by 5 a.m. most days. She uses the quiet time for planning, problem solving, and paperwork. She gets to the Deli by 8 a.m. and heads home about 6 p.m. “It’s a fast paced business and a faster workday,” Julie says. “I am truly blessed with a wonderful team of employees that 028 ALT Magazine | January 2019

are my ‘work family!’ Executive Chef, Jennifer Tanner, and Market Manager, Kat Stone, have been with me for over 10 years. Brittany Weeks, Kitchen Manager, has been with me six years. They are creative, fun and keep us moving forward, and Jennifer keeps it ‘super, super simple!’” Though sometimes it’s hard to turn off her “Deli brain” and relax when she’s not working, Julie enjoys spending time with her family including her partner, Jan Wilson, her parents, Bobby and Sandra Furlow, sister, Sherry Grimes (Glenn), and her nephew and neice, Cole and Colyn. She also enjoys riding the back roads of Arkansas, camping and kayaking on the Buffalo River, and going to Razorback football games, though she says that “last year was hard to watch.” In the future, Julie would like to take more time off to spend time with friends and family. Julie is also active in the community. She is on the board for Harvest Regional Food Bank. “We participate in both the Wine and Jazz and Taste of Texarkana fundraisers,” Julie says. “We love giving back to our community and supporting our local nonprofits.”

introduce online ordering for lunch. Her advice for anyone working to be successful is to pursue their passion. “Find something you love to do. Be passionate about it. Never compromise your integrity,” Julie says. “Be willing to change!”

What is your life motto? “Live each day to the fullest.” 3. What is your favorite food? “All of it! Seriously, Southern fare! I love peas/beans and cornbread.” 4. What three words best describe you? “Fun, loyal, and passionate.” 5. What is your favorite TV show? “Blue Bloods.”

Julie has some goals for the Deli as well. She would love to do some remodeling in the market and

Sonja Yates Hubbard

Principal at the Yates Group Sonya Yates Hubbard’s “paying job” is Principal at the Yates Group, the newly-formed real estate management company post the sale of E-Z Mart’s convenience store assets. They also retain the E-Z Street Liquor store, the Yates Foundation, and Yates Aviation. However, she spends a significant amount of time in her “non-paying” roles in various community organizations. She is currently on the AR-TX REDI board, a newly formed regional economic development group that is working to grow jobs and the economy of our area. “E-Z Mart was chosen by birth being that it was a family business. It wasn’t a requirement or even expectation though, but it was in my blood and all I ever wanted to do,” Sonya says. “For REDI, Riverbend, Christus, Opportunities and others, I was drafted or really volunteered. These uncompensated roles are very rewarding though. The pay is knowing that you are helping others, the community, and the future. That’s invaluable.” Sonya’s day begins at 5:45am when she gets up and heads to Texarkana CrossFit for Up, “an hour of unpredictable pain, sweat, exhaustion and the satisfaction of accomplishment.” Then she heads back home for a simple breakfast, hits the shower, “makes the face and the bed” since that was one of her mom’s rules that stuck, and heads to the new office or one of many board meetings. “I work, plan and ponder life until about 6:00pm while never getting enough done and always being behind, then go home where Bob and/or I make dinner that we often share with family,” Sonya says. “We may watch one 032 ALT Magazine | January 2019

of our binge shows before crashing into the bed at 11:20pm (no matter how hard I try, it is always 11:20pm), set the alarm, sleep and repeat. When I’m not working, we like to hang by the pool or go to the Little River Club.” Sonya learned so much from her father. “Your word is your bond” is one of the main things he repeated often. “He taught me that an agreement doesn’t have to be in a written contract to bind you. Do what you say you’ll do, when you say you’ll do it,” Sonya says. “People will respect you for it.” Sonya’s life motto is “Obstacles are opportunities,” but it was a struggle for Sonya to lose her father suddenly and to face selling the family business. “I think it’s in my nature to move on from struggles, try not look back, try to learn, grow and forget the pain. Losing my dad was something that I will get beyond, but never over,” Sonya says. “Most recently selling the business was a struggle. It was part of my life. I worried about the employees, communities, charities, vendors, and even myself, and what I’d do. Life goes on, our struggles make us stronger.” Though Sonya doesn’t think she’s completed her “greatest accomplishments,” she believes we are called to leave the world better than we’ve found it, and she is trying to accomplish that goal. One of the most memorable moments Sonya has ever had in her career was being inducted as the first woman to chair NACS (National Association of Convenience Stores),” Sonya says. “Following in my dad’s footsteps was huge. It meant a lot to me but would have meant more to him, but I knew he was smiling from above. More recently, being part of the AR-TX REDI Launch Event at the downtown post office with Governors Abbott and Hutchison was historic. We’ve only had them in Texarkana four times ever so to participate in that was monumental.” For Sonya, the future holds more opportunities to impact our community in a positive way. “My goal for the next ten years is to change the world or at least make it better. REDI and the communities’ efforts to grow the economic base of the region will be huge,” Sonya says. “Riverbend’s infrastructure upgrades to the water supply system and protection of our regions natural resources will also be huge. Texarkana will be a better place. I’m honored to just be involved.”

1. How would you describe your family? “Amazing, crazy, close, fun, got your back, put you in your place, best friends, support system and unconditional love. All of that…plus a lot more.” 2. How do you spend your free time? “Sometimes I wonder, but I do like to paint, cook and hang with family and friends. Weird as it sounds, I really find it satisfying to clean out the garage and organize my closet. Yeah, I need help.” 3. What is your New Year’s Resolution? “It’s always the same: Learn Spanish, lose five pounds, exercise more, relax more, work smarter, bed by 10:30pm and just be a better person.” 4. What do you feel is the most important thing about your business? “The people. That was true when we had thousands and still true at only a handful.” 5. What advice could you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? “‘Never, never, never quit’—Winston Churchill.”

Charles Stephen Johnson Jr. Emergency Preparedness Manager at Christus St. Michael Health System

Stephen plans every day for disasters that he prays never happen at his job as the Emergency Preparedness Manager at Christus St. Michael Health System. Stephen recently retired as fire marshal with the Texarkana, Arkansas Fire Department. As the world of fire protection evolved into fire prevention, Stephen became more interested in the emergency preparedness side. This led him to complete his master’s degree in disaster preparedness and accept a job at Christus in December 2018. “My advice to others would be to work everyday towards achieving your dreams,” Stephen says. “You will be amazed where the Lord will lead you.” Stephen’ most memorable moment in his career was being a part of a group of fire marshals that worked on the enactment of legislation in Arkansas regarding a state-wide ban on novelty lighters and requirements for fire safe cigarettes. Stephen is happily married to Karen, and they have four children and a son-in-law. Karen is a teacher, his oldest daughter is an RN and married to a professional pitcher. His middle daughter is a senior at Harding University, and his twins are sophomores at Hooks High School. Stephen says the best advice he ever received is “listen to my wife, always,” and his favorite pastime is spending time with his family. “On the weekends, I love drinking coffee on my front porch with my wife,” Stephen says. “I also enjoy watching my kids play basketball, baseball and volleyball, and deer and duck hunting.” Though he says his greatest struggle has been working to further his education 034 ALT Magazine | January 2019

and not knowing where or when he would be able to put it to use, his greatest accomplishments have been completing his master’s degree in disaster preparedness and earning his executive fire officer designation from the National Fire Academy. In the future, Stephen wants to continue to support the Texarkana community through involvement in Race for the Cure, Texarkana Downs Syndrome Society, and Shop with a Cop/Firefighter; and his 2019 goal is to be a better Christian, husband, father, and son.

“the Darbonator”

Owner, Naaman’s Restaurant One of the most memorable experiences in Darby’s cooking career was the 2009 Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational BBQ. “This was like the ‘Super Bowl’ of BBQ cookoffs,” Darby says. After Darby and his wife reached their goal of being invited to the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational BBQ, they faced the decision to continue on the competition cooking circuit or share their experience with the public. They chose the later and opened Naaman’s BBQ in Texarkana. “Everyday, I get to share killer experiences with all the great people I’ve been blessed to meet and work with,” Darby says. Now, Darby’s goals for the future include opening a new location across the street from their current location. “We want to continue to focus on quality and efficiency,” Darby says. “Our goal every day is to know that our customer’s experience is real, and we want to be known as the best at whatever we are doing. My life motto is ‘If you are going to do it, do it right.’ It’s old school cool, huh?” When he isn’t working, Darby loves riding his Harley and supporting First Choice Pregnancy Center, Opportunities Inc., and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He spends most of his free time with family and friends. “Killer food is always involved!” Darby says. “My favorite pastime is making memories. I’ve been told on multiple occasions that I have a strong appetite.” 036 ALT Magazine | January 2019

Erin Ashley Rogers Texarkana Texas Parks and Recreation Communication Coordinator

Erin Rogers calls herself the “real-life Leslie Knope.” She works every day to enhance the Texarkana community and make it a beautiful, family-friendly place to live. “I am very passionate about the community,” Erin says. “I want to see more activities, more art, and enhance our public parks and events. With this position, I can use my skills in photography, design, and writing while contributing to society in a positive way.” Erin is married to Skylar, a commercial real estate developer. They have one daughter, Lorelai, aka Bean, who is a six-yearold kindergarten student at St. James Day School. Erin named Lorelai after a character in her favorite TV show, Gilmore Girls. “The series features a strong, hard-working mom and her articulate daughter named Lorelai,” Erin says. “They are both witty and well versed in pop culture, as well as being kind to everyone they meet and often helping other people when needed. I thought it was a wholesome group of women to name my daughter after.” Erin’s family also consists of a flock of chickens, dogs, cats, and a pet guinea pig. “We consider ourselves animal lovers and have been told we’re relatively eccentric,” Erin says. “My greatest accomplishment is raising my daughter with my husband, creating the family we always hoped and worked to have. Skylar and I are both from rather poor backgrounds, first generation college students, and we have diligently worked to build a better life for Lorelai. There isn’t anything more satisfying that giving your family something that you never had.” On a normal day, Erin and Skylar wake up around 6 a.m. to let the dogs out, feed the chickens and the guinea pig, and get themselves and Lorelai ready. Then, Erin begins her work for the day. “I usually check the Facebook pages I manage, look over the City’s website and make any necessary amendments, edit photos, draft press releases, and design flyers and other media,” Erin says. “Currently, I am working on a new sign to be installed at Bringle Lake East and a new cover for the Employee Handbook, so I use Illustrator and Photoshop to create a lot of media for the city.” For Erin, the most memorable moments of her career are the smallest ones, like when a fellow citizen lets her know that they appreciate her work. “I really enjoy hearing that my work leaves a positive impact on people and that what I do resonates with them,” Erin says. “Recently, Judge Josh Morriss told me he witnessed when I picked up some litter, and it really made my heart fill with joy. I don’t do things for

recognition, but it sure is nice to hear when people see you do a good job. The most important thing about my career is serving the community because without them the Parks and Recreation department and my position wouldn’t exist. I feel honored to be able to help inform Texarkana about how hard we work for them and what services we provide.” When Erin isn’t working, she spends time pursuing her passion for photography and the arts. Though she doesn’t have personal idols, she “adores” Annie Leibovitz, American portrait photographer. Annie photographed John Lennon the day he was assassinated in 1980 when she worked for the Rolling Stone magazine. She has also photographed Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton, and Queen Elizabeth II, to name a few. “Henry Geldzahler is someone I have idolized for many, many years though, long before I ever picked up a camera,” Erin says. “He was an American curator for 20th century artists like Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, and my ultimate favorite, Jean Basquiat.” Aside from taking photos, Erin tends to her chickens with her family. They collect the eggs and give them away to friends. When the weather permits, they often visit the many beautiful parks we have here in Texarkana. Erin particularly enjoys walking Bringle Lake Wilderness Trail. “I enjoy spending time exploring new things with my family and friends, whether it’s taking a trip out of town, stopping by a restaurant or business I’ve never been to, or trying new experiences,” Erin says. “Anything can be an adventure if you have the right mindset and people with you. My friend, Helen, is always up for going places, listening to new music, or reading a new book. I enjoy growing with people, whether friends or family.” Though she has scaled back some of her community involvements to spend more time with her family and pursuing her passions, Erin is a member of Wilbur Smith Rotary and Friends of Texarkana Parks. Erin’s goal for 2019 is to work harder and to exceed expectations. “I enjoy feeling useful and needed in the community, my career, and my family,” Erin says. “I would also like to have more life experiences. For instance, my husband and I purchased tickets for the 2019 Austin Hot Air Balloon Festival as part of my birthday celebration in March. The hot air balloon ride will be another item off the bucket list.” The best advice that Erin has ever recieved is “Do not compare yourself to others and work hard until you have accomplished your goals.” Erin’s goals for the next ten years include getting her doctorate and being a leader in the community and at home. “To me being a strong, articulate, and happy woman is very important,” Erin says. “As cliché as it sounds my life motto is, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ I believe that modeling is the most effective way to show people what you believe and teach others your position and values. Texarkana has a lot of potential to grow

and many opportunities that can be seized, but we have to start within and on an individual basis if we truly wish to see drastic change over time. Change must be gradual to be peaceful and well received.”

1. What is your favorite food? "Chocolate, hands down. I probably eat Justin’s Organic Dark Chocolate every single day." 2. What is your favorite past time? "My favorite past time is when my late grandfather would visit us and play with my daughter. They had an innate bond and shared a good sense of humor. There is a photo I have framed in Lorelai’s room of the two of them laughing in our front yard months before he passed from cancer. I can’t look at it without choking up and wanting to cry. I am grateful for all the memories we shared, both when I was a child and with my own child." 3. What is your New Year’s Resolution? “My New Year’s resolution is to do more with my family and check more items off the bucket list. There are also some old hobbies I want to pick back up, like gardening and painting. Really, I want to engage in activities the whole family can enjoy because that is what is most important: strengthening our bond and creating memories that will last a lifetime.” 4. What has been your greatest struggle? “My biggest struggle is learning to not be so hard, critical of myself. I set very high expectations and standards, and when I don’t accomplish those standards it is difficult for me to not dwell on those failures. I have recently adopted a new perspective that mistakes and failures are simply opportunities to learn, grow, and improve.” 5. What advice would you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? "Never stop trying! There will be times when you may feel hopeless or stressed but know that nothing great happens without immense effort. All the people we look up to are in their positions because they tried harder than anyone else." ALT-Mag.com | January 2019 039

His father, Jules Rodgers, lives in northeastern Tennessee. An average day for Joseph includes waking up, rushing to school, sitting through his AP classes all day, going to one of his many extracurricular activities after school, and then heading home. Once he is home, he does homework, goes to bed and starts the cycle all over again. “The most important aspect of being a student is actually learning and applying that to one’s daily life rather than just ‘going through the motions,’” Joseph says. Joseph was recently accepted to Texas A&M University where he will attend in the fall. Attending A&M will continue an Aggie family tradition. “My grandfather, Gail Balmain, loved Texas A&M because my mother graduated from there,” Joseph says. “After his death, I wanted to make him proud, and I know he is smiling down at me.” While attending A&M, Joseph plans to major in business and become a member of the Corps of Cadets. “I chose Texas A&M University—College Station because when I visited campus, I fell in love with the traditions and the university’s patriotism,” Joseph says. “The Aggies are very respectful, especially toward the military. Additionally, TAMU has strong academics and a very high job placement.” Joseph stays busy at school and in the community. At Texas High, and is involved in student council and leadership class. He also volunteers at Community Café at Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, the annual CASA 5K Color Run, Dash 4 Cash 5K Scholarship Run, Tiger Angel Tree, Mistletoe Fair, National League of Junior Cotillions, church orchestra playing alto saxophone, Special Olympics, Vacation Bible School, and many more. “The best advice I have ever received is from my 040 ALT Magazine | January 2019

mom and my grandpa,” Joseph stated. “My mom told me ‘the only investments that last forever are the Word of God and the souls of men,’ and my grandpa reminded me all the time to always be ‘accountable and responsible.’” One of Joseph’s greatest struggles has been learning how to talk and socializing with others. “I was born with autism, and I had many developmental problems,” Joseph says. “However, through therapy, prayer, and lots of love, I recovered and was mainstreamed into kindergarten. Throughout middle school, I learned to overcome my shyness and awkwardness, and now I never meet a stranger.” For Joseph there are two major events that stand out as turning points in his life. The first was when he got saved. The second was when he gave his eighth grade salutatorian speech. His most memorable moment was his vacation to Israel. “It was unlike anything I have ever experienced from the cascading, desert mountains to the ancient streets of Jerusalem and Petra, Jordan,” Joseph says. “I love to learn more about the world around me.” In the very little free time that Joseph has, he likes to eat out and watch movies with friends, watch documentaries on YouTube about other countries, and travel. His goal for 2019 is to prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually for college and to do well in his first semester at Texas A&M. In the next

ten years, Joseph would like to graduate from college, finish his advanced education, and obtain a financially stable job that he loves. “If someone wants to be successful, I would give them the advice of work hard, and never give up,” Joseph says. “Always prepare ahead of something major, and take realistic small steps to reach large goals.”

1. What is your New Year’s resolution? “My New Year’s resolutions are to drink nothing but water, run and workout everyday, read my Bible everyday, and to have better time management.” 2. What is your life motto? “My life motto is Robert Frost’s poem ‘The Road Not Taken,’” Joseph says. “I try to take the road less-traveled because in the end, ‘it makes all the difference.’” 3. What is your favorite television show? “Shark Tank.” 4. What is your favorite pastime? “Constructing complex LEGO sets.” 5. Who is your personal idol? “My mom because I admire her hard-work ethic and her compassion towards people.”

Tylesha “Ty” Ross LabCorp at the Women’s Specialist in Texarkana

Ty lives her life by the motto, “Never compare your life to others, you don’t know their story.” Ty realizes that no journey will be the same, and she tries to embrace the season that she is in. Her outlook stems from her own ability to modify her life’s goals when obstacles come in the way. After graduating high school, she initially went to school to be a dentist. However, she felt selfish being away at school when both of her parents were ill. So, she took a medical assistant certification course in 2002-2003 and loved working in the lab. “I knew that I needed to have some type of money coming in to help my parents out the best way I could at that time,” Ty says. Ty went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business for a career change, but, she is enjoying her job at the Women’s Specialist Clinic where she feels she can really make a difference. “With my current job, I feel like I’m able to reach those that need just a little bit of encouragement. Women go through so much emotionally and physically when dealing with conception. I’m able to love on them,” Ty says. Though Ty loves to pour into others, she is also "one of the family" at the clinic where her colleagues care about her and encourage her. “I have been blessed to have so many great memories at The Women’s Specialist, but I think my most memorable one was when the staff and patients all showered me with love during lab week in 2016,” Ty says. “That year was extremely difficult for me personally. I normally don’t worry others with my personal life, however, the previous year I had endured multiple surgeries and was really just getting back to work. It felt good to be shown how much I meant to someone else. Patients came and brought cards, balloons, flowers, hugs and dinners just to show me they cared and loved me. I never knew my ‘little’ office had such a huge impact on so many lives.” When she is at home, Ty loves to spend time with her family and her only child, a fur baby named Zuzu. On a typical day, Ty starts her 042 ALT Magazine | January 2019

day at 5 a.m. with prayers and a trip to the gym. She tries to work out three days a week. Then, she goes to work, where she gives her all to her patients. In the midst of her busy day, she will cram in some reading for her class on her lunch break. She is currently attending Walden University to complete her master’s in public administration. After work, Ty is involved in many community organizations like The Believe in Beverly Association and the board of trustees for First Choice Pregnancy. Ty has also helped with fundraisers for the Texarkana Symphony, volunteered with Heritage Hospice, served on the Bancorp Advisory Community Outreach Board, Homeless Coalition, and Order of Eastern Star Stateline No. 19. Ty is also the president of the usher board at Tower of Power Gospel Ministries and a faithful activist for other local fundraisers throughout Texarkana and the surrounding areas. “Wherever my hands can be of assistance, I step right up.” Ty says. “My greatest accomplishment would be that I have been able to bridge a community that once was overlooked or labeled as such a negative environment. I believe God used me to give a better understanding to those who were not “sure” about people in the Beverly community. With the constant support from David Orr and Daphne Ryan, I feel as though my purpose was to be that voice needed to shake things up and to motivate those around to genuinely do better for themselves and the community.” If Ty has free time, she loves to sleep, make or refurbish old furniture, or spend it with her dog, Zuzu. “I really feel like God placed Zuzu in my life to slow me down and do what I can,” Ty says. “She’s taught me a lot about love and how important it is to cherish every moment. So, when I do get a chance to not do anything, Zuzu and I hit the highway or just do nothing together. She’s my road dog (pun intended).” Ty has several, big, life goals. She wants to rebuild the Beverly, Highland Park and Rosehill communities. She wants to retire before she’s 50, and she wants to travel.

For 2019, Ty wants to live life to the fullest, continue to build on her relationship with God, start a new career in the community, bridge more communities, possibly relocate, meet someone special, finish school, and build her new house. “I have a heart of gold. If I can do anything for anyone, I will. I have a true passion for outreach work and that’s the direction in which I’ve been praying some doors be open for me,” Ty says. “I truly feel like everything I’ve encountered has ordered my footsteps to be the voice that so many need. I’m honored that I have been chosen to go down this path. I really feel like Texarkana will get on board with the overall change needed for our city.”

1. What are three words that you feel best describe you? “Loyal, straight shooter, and trustworthy.” 2. What is your favorite type of food? “Italian food! Carbs go straight to my hips.” 3. What is your favorite TV show? “I’ve been a fan since day one of Grey’s Anatomy.” 4. Who do you admire the most? “I admire my best friend and sister Candace Taylor. She’s very elegant and graceful but still can have fun with the best of folks. She’s very ambitious in everything she does. Humble and beautiful, she’s always encouraging others to be the best version of oneself that they can be. She saw something in me years ago that I never knew existed; for that I am eternally grateful to her.” 5. What words of advice do you have for others? “Keep God first! Be happy and support others. Keep your word and protect your name. Never think your part is too small. YOU MATTER!”

Dawn Marie Leathers Russ

Administrative Assistant/ VIPS Campus Contact at the Sixth Grade Center at Texas Middle School Dawn “stumbled” across her current job earlier this year, and she has quickly seen God’s hand in her path. Though children have never been “her thing,” she thought that a job in a school behind the scenes would fit her personality. Little did she know that she would soon develop a passion for helping the kids she sees every day. “I quickly learned that my idea versus reality was very different and I am so glad! I am truly in love with every child I encounter daily,” Dawn says. “From the ones who drip sugar to the ones who need a little extra TLC, they will never know how they have changed my life in the last few months. I used to dream of winning the lottery and going on dream vacations and buying fancy cars. Now my dream is opening an after school home where students are fed, tutored, given clean clothes, and just loved on.” Being at TMS and working with the caring staff there has also shown Dawn what it takes to work in a school setting. “Everyone is so important to these children. Everyone. I see these children interacting with every single person that wears a badge at that school, and these people all truly care for these children and work so hard for them,” Dawn says. “The blood, sweat, and tears; it’s not just the education they are giving. They are consistently dedicated to make sure these kids have everything from breakfast, to a jacket, to something for Christmas. The saying ‘to teach is to touch lives’ is exemplified at TMS! Everyday is a great day to be a Tiger.” In her position, Dawn wants to be the person that everyone can rely on. “You need some staples? Come see me! You need an email sent out? Come see me! You need a bathroom break? Give me a call!! I love to be the first name that comes to anyone's mind when they need help with anything!” Dawn says. 044 ALT Magazine | January 2019

Though Dawn is really growing into her new job working with students, she considers her biggest accomplishment to be her family. Dawn has been married for 16 years to Spencer Russ, an Engineering Liaison for Husqvarna Outdoor Products. The couple have three beautiful daughters: Sydnee, 21, a college student pursuing a degree in theater. Abby, 16, a junior at Hooks High School and is involved “in every activity available.” Laney, 10, a fourth grader at Hooks Elementary. She is in her eighth year of dance at All Star Dance Center. “I look at my husband and girls daily and wonder what I ever did to deserve this beautiful mess, and how in the world does everyone get up, fed, ready, out the door, back home, educated, and in the bed by 9 p.m.?” Dawn says. When Dawn has free time, she loves going to her daughter’s extra curricular activities whether that be sports, theatre, or dance. She also enjoys napping and Netflix. Her goal for 2019 is finding more time for her friends. “I have some really amazing friends that lift my soul so very much, and I don't get to spend near enough time with them! Get ready, ladies!” Dawn says. Looking to the future, Dawn has so many goals she wants to accomplish for herself, her girls and

her family. “I just look forward to seeing the finished product of all the amazing blessings I receive daily,” Dawn says.

1. What is the best advice you have ever received? “The best advice I have ever received was from my Mimi right after my youngest brother died in 2004 at the young age of 18. She said, ‘Life isn't always fair, but it's still good.’ These are words I will cling to forever.” 2. Who is your personal idol? “Definitely my mom! She still amazes me!” 3. Favorite TV show? “This is Us.” 4. What advice would you give to others who are working towards success? “One piece of advice I feel is important with anything in life is this: kindness matters. No matter what the situation, be kind. How you treat people and react to people, that is what shows who you really are as a person, so be kind always.” 5. What three words would best describe you? “Funny, passionate, and dependable.”

Dan Shiner

Former Chief of Police, Texarkana Texas Police Department Dan Shiner moved to Texarkana because his wife, Phyllis Ann Crumpton, encouraged him to move here and to apply for the position of Police Chief. Phyllis is from Nash, Texas, and their blended family includes five children and thirteen grandchildren. “It has been an honor to serve here and Texarkana has become our hometown,” Dan says. “As I learned from Brother Magness, I am here because God put me here, I have done what He has directed me to do, and for the period of time He has wanted me to do it, and I am now transitioning to retirement because it is ‘His’ desire that I embrace new opportunities and challenges. Dan originally became interested in law enforcement while serving in the Navy. Dan had a chance to work with local police departments and found the work rewarding, challenging and exciting. “Having the opportunity to help people in times of crisis and to make a difference in a community were the outcomes that appealed to me most,” Dan says. In his fifty-one plus years in law enforcement, Dan has had several memorable moments. One of them occurred early on in his career when he was shot in the line of duty. “That event caused me to truly realize the dangers officers face on a regular and ongoing basis and the value of training that prepares you to face these dangers,” Dan says. “Becoming Chief of Police in other communities and ultimately be selected as Chief of Police in Texarkana, Texas, have been highlights in my career. All these events pale in comparison to personal family milestones, faithbased commitments and the personal reward of completing my college degrees after leaving home as a high school dropout.” Dan has had many people he admired over the years, but two really stand out. “A former boss, the late Chief William ‘Tony’ Anthony, retired Director of Law Enforcement for the State of California, may be the most memorable career idol. A former Bible Study Teacher, Brother Paul Magness, had a huge impact as a teacher of the bible and personal faith,” Dan says. “I embraced my faith later in life and wish I had done it sooner. This is obviously a personal decision, but it has certainly made a positive difference in my life and hopefully the lives of those around me. I think it is important 046 ALT Magazine | January 2019

to have balance in life and to make sure that faith, family and friends take a rightful role with career obligations.” Dan’s goal for 2019 is to successfully transition to a pleasant and productive retirement routine. He wants to spend time at his lake house with his family and friends and pursue some of his hobbies like wood and metal work. However, retiring from the job does not mean retiring from his oath to protect and serve the community. “I am involved in several charities, including the church, and I like to serve communities when and wherever the needs arise,” Dan says. “I would love to continue to serve the public through commitments to civic needs.”

Tracy Diane Spradlin

Broker/Owner of Impact Realty Group LLC, Impact Realty Property Management Several years back, Tracy and her husband, Bill, sold an investment house and went through a friend of theirs that was in the real estate business. The thought of selling real estate and the idea of learning a new career path was very intriguing to them. However, it was hard to change careers and go out on a limb with something new. “When Bill and I opened Impact Realty back in 2008, I was faced with leaving a company that had become my family and venturing out on our own. The thought was terrifying. The startup of the business, the unknowns of the future, getting the business off the ground, etc., were extremely trying times,” Tracy says. “We learned a lot during the first two years about what works and what does not work for our company, and how to mold our business to work for us. Lots of ups and downs come with a new endeavor. You have to ride out the highs and lows and keep positive thoughts and upbeat people around you.” Now, Tracy and Bill work hard each and every day to make Impact Realty Group as successful as they possibly can. They make sure their clients come first and that they are making the process for them go as smoothly and stress free as can be. For the past five years, they have been chosen by the public as the Best Realtor in the Texarkana Area. “That recognition has really been an honor,” Tracy says. “We are a small, locally owned business with the heart and drive of a large corporation. We thoroughly enjoy the fact that we are able to give our customers and clients that personal attention they deserve. In the past 18 years, there have been numerous memorable moments. The first that comes to mind was working with a first time home buyer that was so nervous at closing that he broke into a cold sweat and nearly fainted while signing his closing documents. Another was working with a family who were upsizing and watching their two children jumping up and down with excitement as they picked out their new bedrooms, all the while, leading me by the hand through the house.” At her job, Tracy wears many hats including overseeing the normal day to day functions of a business office, supervising employees, overseeing the property management aspect of Impact Realty, 048 ALT Magazine | January 2019

scheduling showings and listings of properties. She is also a mom, wife, and grandmother. While it was really hard for Tracy to narrow down a “greatest" accomplishment, she says that the "success of raising a family of productive and successful children is by far my greatest.” Bill and Tracy have four children. “I am truly blessed with a wonderful family,” Tracy says. “Bill is the most supportive and loving husband I could ever have hoped for. No matter what I decide I want to do, he is always there, backing me 100 percent. Whether it is something at work I need done or another project I come up with, he always finds a way to make it happen, and anyone who knows us knows I can come up with a lot of projects.” Bill and Tracy’s son, Payton Laney, is an Arkansas State Parole Officer, and his wife Sarah, is the General Manager of Newk's Eatery. They've given Bill and Tracy their first granddaughter, Laikyn, who will be turning two in February. They also have three daughters. Ashley Spradlin lives in San Marcos, TX and recently acquired her Texas Real Estate Salesperson License and is very active at being a Yoga instructor. Megan Trubia is an 8th grade science teacher in Arlington and her husband, Johnny, an Arlington TX Police Officer, are expecting their second daughter in March 2019. Amanda is a U.S. Air Force Veteran and is trained as a medic, and her husband Kyle Armstrong is still proudly serving in the U.S. Air Force. “We are extremely proud of each and every one of them for all their accomplishments and service,” Tracy says. When Tracy has free time, she loves to spend time with Bill at their cabin and hang out with friends. However, becoming grandparents has changed a lot of their weekend priorities. “I spend as much of my free time with our first grandbaby as I can. They say a love for a grandbaby is so much different from your own children. They couldn't be more right!” Tracy says. “The love I have for her cannot be explained. Watching her grow and learn is just a blessing. Soon I will be traveling to Dallas more frequently than I do now, to love on that second granddaughter!” Tracy is actively involved in National Cancer Society, which is extremely imporant to her because her father passed away from cancer in 2004. Tracy’s father once told her the best advice she has ever recieved. “He once told me that I could do or be whoever I wanted to be, but always treat people with kindness and understanding,” Tracy says. “He said no matter how hard things get, just remember to put your best foot forward and you will succeed in whatever path you choose.”

Tracy’s relationship with both of her parents has made a huge impact on her life. Her mother is the person she says she admires the most. To Tracy, she is the strongest and most loving lady she has ever known. Unfortunately, Tracy’s mom had a tragic accident last October when she fell down a flight of stairs and broke nine ribs, damaged her neck and spine, and suffered a severe laceration on her head. “It made me realize how much I depend on and need her in my life. She was taken to trauma center in Fort Worth, where the doctors gave us little hope that she would even pull through or ever be able to get out of bed and have a normal life. They were preparing us for her to go to a skilled nursing center. My heart was so heavy thinking she could not live like this and what our lives would be like now,” Tracy says. “She was finally transported to Saint Michaels Rehab in Texarkana where they started working on her rehabilitation. She miraculously made a huge turn around and is able to walk with her walker and do things on her own again. She still needs assistance with certain daily activities, and her life has changed tremendously but she is still alive and doing well, which is all I could have prayed and asked for this past year. She is truly an inspiration to me and our entire family.” Looking to the future, Tracy wants to continue spending time with family and friends and growing the family realty business. In 2019, they are starting up a branch office in San Marcos, Texas, area. “We are excited about expanding our company with more like minded professionals,” Tracy says. “In the next ten years, I’d like to watch our business grow and expand even more. I would also enjoy more time with family and traveling.”

1. What is your life motto? “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” 2. What is your favorite food? “Steak and a baked potato.” 3. What is your favorite TV show? “Game of Thrones.” 4. What is your favorite pastime? “Shopping.” 5. What advice would you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? “Keep a good outlook on what you are trying to achieve, stay positive, make goals each year to keep yourself focused and on the right track to be successful. Never give up and remember that nothing worth having comes easy.”

Shanda is a fourth grade STEM teacher at Redwater Middle School. Tom Whitten

Bowie County Commissioner, Precinct 2 Tom considers one of his greatest accomplishments to be his work with the Commissioners Court, other elected officials, and the department heads to restore and finances of Bowie County. For Tom, a “normal day” starts with meeting the road crew. Then, he spends his time doing whatever is necessary to keep Precinct 2 running smoothly. “Most days you will find me working alongside the road crew completing projects. I also have responsibilities on committees that require I spend a lot of my time in meetings,” Tom says. “This includes the jail, Commissioners Court, MPO, etc. Bowie county has experienced two, 100 year floods during my tenure. Through collaboration with several local entities, my precinct was instrumental in maintaining the levies and protecting citizens and their property.” Tom and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 20 years. They have two girls, Hailey, 17, and Hensley, 13, that attend Pleasant Grove Schools. Though Tom likes to spend his free time riding his Harley, hunting and working on his farm in Ogden, he also enjoys watching his children in their dance, cheer, and sporting activities. “I got into this position to work for the betterment of the community and help improve the future for our children,” Tom says. Tom is also a board member of TRAHC and a deacon at First Baptist Church Moore’s Lane. His goals for 2019 include getting his daughter settled into college in the fall and looking forward to the upcoming legislative session. “I plan to continue to be involved in transportation and water issues that affect our area,” Tom says. “My biggest struggle is how to utilize the limited resources we have in the best way to serve the citizens.” In the future, Tom has several personal and professional goals. He wants to see his girls finish college and be happy and successful in their lives. “I want to continue public service in the direction the Lord leads me,” Tom says. “I am always available if needed, and I truly enjoy what I am doing. I want to leave the world a better place.” 052 ALT Magazine | January 2019

FITNESS CORNER

SORE TODAY

Matthew’s job as a certified fitness trainer and owner of Mad Hatter Fitness is centered around the mission to change lives. Matthew lives for the moments that he can celebrate with clients because their doctor takes them off medication for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and other lifealtering conditions. “My greatest accomplishment would be believing in myself enough to pursue a career in fitness,” Matthew says. “It allows me to live in the service of others and enrich the lives of others to the best of my ability.” Growing up, Matthew knew nothing about the gym. Matthew grew up as the oldest of three boys in Lockesburg, Arkansas, which had a population of 711 and did not have a local gym. However, he was close to his family and spent a lot of time with them. Matthew’s brother, Jason, is 21, and youngest brother, Kevin, is 11. Matthew’s mother is a registered nurse and lives with his stepfather and Kevin in Ben Lomond, Arkansas. Matthew’s father works for the county and lives with his stepmother in Horatio, Arkansas. His brother, Jason, works as a pipeline surveyor in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Though he was close with his brothers, Matthew met the “big brother he never had” in one of his best friends, Justin Foster. “I met Justin when I was sixteen years old during a summer break at my grandparents’ canoe rental business,” Matthew says. “He was my first ‘workout partner’ in the gym, and he taught me enough to get me hooked on the lifestyle.” Once he started working out with Justin, Matthew discovered his passion for health and fitness. “Having someone to show me the ropes and celebrate every milestone impacted my life more than Justin could ever know,” Matthew says. “He was the person who helped pave the way for where I am today. He empowered me. To be able to have a career that consists of empowering others was a dream of mine that I decided to make a reality.”

056 ALT Magazine | January 2019

Every day, Matt spends his time writing sessions for his clients, working out, spending time with gym members, and contributing to community events. The largest part of his day is reserved for training his clients and working with them to reach their goals. “When a client tells me they can fit into a size they never thought they would fit into again, it creates an amazing moment. There are some that even followed through with their dream of being ‘competition ready’ and taking fitness photos. Truly, it is impossible to nail down one specific memorable moment when my days are blessed with so many incredible ones,” Matthew says. Because Matthew pursues his passion every day, it’s hard to find a work/life balance. For him, training doesn’t feel like work. Instead, it’s a part of his life that exists around the clock. However, when he is off, Matthew spends time with his girlfriend and family. He loves hiking or laying around all day watching movies with his girlfriend. He also donates his time to many community organizations. “Each year, I

STRONG TOMORROW participate with Anytime Fitness in food drives, pet adoption events, blood drives, judging local high school powerlifting competitions, and foster dogs in need,” Matthew says. “I also work with Anytime Fitness and the Casa Foundation each year for the Casa Colorful 5k.” Matthew lives his life in the moment. His life motto is to “find something positive in each day,” and he loves the Marcus Aurelius quote that says, “Confine yourself to the present.” “The best advice I’ve ever received is that conditions will never be perfect, but if you wait on that to be happy, you will wait a lifetime,” Marcus says. “Big or small, remember to celebrate each victory along the way.”

Matthew’s advice to others who want to follow their passion and find success is to create a clear goal. “Take the first step,” Matthew says. “If you aren’t sure how, do not be afraid to reach out to someone for help. I love to meet new faces and offer a free personal training session to anyone who is ready to make a change in their lives.” If you want to know more about Matthew’s services or schedule your first free personal training session, email matt@madhatterfit.com.

In the future, Matthew would like to own one or more fitness facilities so that he can “change lives on a much larger scale.” He also wants to win his Pro Card with the IFBB. “In 2019, I will continue to compete and fully intend to win my Pro Card,” Matthew says. “I also plan to expand my business and present an online training platform.”

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Water up, Water Down So far this year Wright Patman has been like a yo-yo. Just about the time the fish get back to where they should be for this time of year, BOOM, more rain, and here comes more rising water. At the rate we are going, we may well have another year of spawning so far back in the bushes the fish will not see a human for months. The flippers and pitchers are having a field day with the bass. The bushes have enough water on them to hold some really nice fish. And 2019 should be a banner year for catching some good sacks of big bass. After several years of impressive spawns, it is ready to explode. As good as some of the past few years have been, we still have not had the numbers and size we had before the fish kill in 2010. Time will heal all things and all the good spawns will produce some really big fish soon. We already see lots of six to seven pounders, but we will know it’s truly back when we see two or three 8-10 pound fish every tournament in the spring. Until then we can enjoy the numbers of nice fish and some good ones mixed in.

STRINGER WEALTH MANAGEMENT RAYMOND JAMES FINANCIAL STRINGERWEALTHMANAGEMENT.NET

Your usual?

Familiarity bias means sticking with what you know – but there may be a lot that you don’t

Are you a creature of habit? When you visit the grocery store, do you fill your cart with the products and brands you’ve bought for years? The same cheese, the same wine, the same soap. Is that because they’re the best of the options … or because they’re the ones you know best? It can be hard to tell, can’t it? GET FAMILIAR WITH FAMILIARITY A familiarity bias is the subconscious tendency to gravitate toward what we know, often without realizing it. It’s why you might place the same coffee order every time without thinking twice, or perhaps why you’ve consistently owned a particular brand of car. Lots of us go with what we know – and that’s not always a bad thing. However, when it comes to your financial plan, leaning too heavily on what’s familiar can lead to an underdiversified portfolio and gaps in your wealth plan. By trying to play it safe, you could actually be putting yourself and your hard-earned wealth at risk.

companies or those they’ve worked for. Plus, if an investor chooses a stock solely because of its name, they might not have researched all of its underlying characteristics – like risk. Familiarity might be playing a role in some of your decisions if: •You often frequent the same places and order the same things. •You consider yourself loyal to certain brands, whether cars, clothes or toothpaste. •You gravitate toward products and places that you’ve heard of, perhaps because you’ve seen them in a commercial or heard someone talking about them.

Just because you like a company as a consumer doesn’t mean it is the best fit for your portfolio. And just as we shouldn’t overestimate what’s familiar, we shouldn’t necessarily underestimate what’s unfamiliar, either. For example, someone might not know much about certain estate planning solutions but that doesn’t mean these specialized vehicles aren’t a good fit in HOW CAN A FAMILIARITY BIAS DISRUPT YOUR their financial plan. Similarly, an individual may FINANCES? opt for a traditional savings vehicle instead of The trouble with familiarity when it comes to considering alternative solutions like 529 plans wealth is that it can sway people to make decisions or HSAs. that aren’t aligned with their holistic financial picture. When it comes to investing, this often When familiarity factors into your financial leads to a lack of diversification in portfolios. For plan: example, if someone is selecting investments based •You might be overweighted in domestic on familiarity, they might be overweighted in securities, well-known companies, or companies domestic securities, or a disproportionate number you’ve worked for. of their investments could be large, well-known •You may have avoided unfamiliar planning 078 ALT Magazine | January 2019

solutions, like insurance, cash management and more, that could provide a more well-rounded financial plan. •You might risk increased losses by concentrating a large portion of your portfolio in a particular investment, asset class or market segment. •You may not be considering whether your investments are the best fit for you from a riskreward perspective. THE GUARDRAIL While we all enjoy taking the path more traveled from time to time, that doesn’t mean familiarity needs to get in the way of your long-term financial success. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to help you avoid the potentially negative effects of familiarity in your financial plan. For starters, seek out objective research in all elements of your wealth strategy. For your investments, this can help you vet a security for its risk level and historical performance. As your advisor, I can not only help provide you with research about individual investments but can also offer guidance and recommendations to help ensure you have a well-balanced portfolio that fits into your larger wealth plan. Further, we can review your comprehensive financial plan and see where we might incorporate strategies and solutions that may be a good fit for you – including those you might not be familiar with. Using the sophisticated planning software at my disposal we can monitor your progress and

adjust as needed to make sure your financial plan is aligned with your longterm goals.

Most of the eggs in the same basket Americans invest nearly 75% of their portfolios in U.S.-based assets – despite the fact that the U.S. accounts for a fraction of global GDP and a little more than 35% of the world’s capital markets. Source: JP Morgan

Put simply, there are many factors to take into consideration when crafting a healthy financial plan. That’s why I’m here to serve as a trusted resource and sounding board, able to provide you with the experienced insight and knowledge you need to address each of your objectives with objectivity. THINK BEFORE YOU ACT To help you keep familiarity from overly influencing your financial plan: •Don’t confuse awareness with understanding or expertise. Rely on objective research. •Take the time to consider your motivations for selecting certain investments or strategies. •Don’t rule out an investment or financial strategy because it’s foreign to you. •Call us or schedule a meeting anytime to receive the objective insight you need to make important decisions surrounding your wealth. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. Investing involves risk, and you may incur a profit or loss regardless of strategy selected.
