From the Publisher With the beginning of September comes new beginnings for our family. Many of you know that my daughter, Jaclyn Gooding, has been in Austin for the past seven months at Texas State Trooper Academy. On August 9th, she graduated. After seven months away, she came home. However, that was only for three weeks before she reported to her new station in Del Rio, Texas, on September 1st. Yes, that’s on the border! Many have asked when I am moving to Del Rio. The answer is I’m not moving! Her husband, Marshall, is moving though, and they are excited to start their new life there. Marshall recently accepted a position with the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Department and will start there on September 9th. They are both excited to be together again in the pursuit of their careers. I am happy they will be together again, as they should be. Sometimes making plans for our future is hard. It will definitely be hard for my best friend to be nine hours away from me when she has been right beside me for 33 years. But airfare to Del Rio is pretty cheap, I have a dependable car, Facetime works, and I will see and talk to her regularly. I have visited Del Rio a few times and it is a very friendly city. I know she will flourish there.

I am one very proud momma! She did well at Academy and I can’t wait to see where this opportunity takes her. So if you happen to see me posting pics in Del Rio, you will know why I am there! Not that I am moving, but nobody said I couldn’t visit regularly! Adios! May God bless you and yours!

HILTON'S BARBER SHOP

Age is only a number! BY AN N E GR AN ADO

I could tell you where Hilton’s Barber Shop in Maud is located, but you probably already know. The current shop has been a staple in Maud since 1985, but Lee Ray Hilton has been cutting hair in Maud since 1961. To get to the shop, go right over the railroad tracks and then turn left at 319 Fincher. The small, white building with its iconic barber pole and American flag invites customers to revisit the idea that the barber shop is also an important part of community and tradition. As you step through the door, you immediately feel like you are transported to another, more simple time. The walls are covered with photographs and signs that have followed Lee throughout his 58-year career. Lee’s memorabilia and pictures celebrating Maud immediately invite exploration. He has a light up sign and cups from Maud Maid, the ice cream factory that used to be housed

downtown. Lee says that the ice cream was so good that Borden paid them to shut down. “They were making the real deal,” Lee says. A small fridge advertising sodas for 50¢, and containers of hard candy create an inviting place to sit down and rest. The original chairs were purchased in the 1960’s, and they used to come with clip-on ash trays. Lee says that

Established 1961 OLD IS SOMETIMES BETTER back then the barber shop would get so smoky that you could barely see. Up front, the two blue barber chairs facing the waiting area have traveled with Lee to all five locations of his barber shop. The man he bought the chairs from was cutting hair on them in the 1930’s, and he told Lee that they were not new, even then. Lee has only reupholstered them once, and if they could talk, it is clear they would have some stories to share. A sign advertises that haircuts are $10, something that Lee points out is really the only change since he began in 1961. Back then, the haircuts were $1. Lee also provides shaves, and even shaves the outline of the customer with a straight razor, something only a licensed barber can do. Of course, people trust Lee. Not only has he been cutting hair his whole life, he cuts his own hair and trims with a straight razor. After years of practice, he says it only takes him a couple of minutes. When I ask how much a shave costs, he says, “$10,” with a laugh. Everything is simple here. Withou any frills, or fluff, Lee creates an atmosphere that makes you want to put away your phone and visit about old times. Even at 76-years-old, it is clear that Lee Ray Hilton is not slowing down anytime soon. Cutting hair has been a part of his story for as long as he can remember, but more than that, a quality work ethic was ingrained in the blueprint of Lee’s childhood. His parents owned a farm in Hooks, Texas. His dad, Alfred, who everyone called “Shine,” drove a school bus for 25 years. When I asked why his dad was called Shine, Lee just said with a smile, “I’ve heard a few stories. My dad was a funny man. He really enjoyed carrying the kids on trips and school events. He really liked his job.” ALT-Mag.com | September 2019 011

Lee’s mother, Frances, did not have a nickname. Lee says that’s because she was “all business.” Frances just passed away last July at the age of 97. “She was a hard-working woman, and she enjoyed doing it,” Lee says. “She went out and hand milked a cow every morning that she was able. She churned her own butter.” Lee and his three siblings spent their childhood outdoors creating fun for themselves on the farm. While their parents worked, the kids swam in “ol’ stock ponds” and rode horses. “We had a good time. We didn’t have all the high tech stuff to play with the kids have now,” Lee says. “We just stayed outside and made our own fun.” After watching Shine cut his own hair, Lee started picking up the tools and doing his own hair as well. Pretty soon, Lee’s cousin would get money from his parents for a haircut, but then run over to Lee’s to get him to cut it instead. They would split the money. “I grew up having to work. I always knew I would need a good job. My folks worked outside in the heat, and I figured that being a barber would be a good way to make money and stay cool,” Lee says.

Lee’s parents supported his decision to go to barber school and even paid his way. Lee started at a barber school in Dallas. He attended for about a month and then received word that Texarkana was opening their own Barber College on Broad Street. When he found out his hours would transfer, Lee made the move home so that he could marry his girlfriend, Linda. Lee suggests that his dad wanted him to wait until he finished school, but Lee says that he was getting married regardless. “My dad gave me $600 and that’s what Linda and I lived on until I got out of barber school,” Lee says. “We rented an apartment downtown, and then I graduated in 1961.” In that time, barbers had to work under a master barber for 18 months after graduation and then take another exam, so on October 12, 1961, the day he graduated, Lee visited Lundy Ragland at Maud Barber Shop to ask about a job. “I asked him when he wanted me to start, and he stated that he would like for me to start right then due to the following day being Friday the 13th,” Lee says. “After cutting my first head of hair, I asked him what to do with the money. He told me to always keep the first dollar I made as it would bring good luck.”

"They were all important to me."

Lee and his beloved Linda started a family in Maud and had three children: Tammy, Amy and Todd. All three grew up in and around the barber shop. “I remember coming in and getting money and then going to the restaurant downtown and getting a malt,” Tammy says. “We loved that he was downtown and available. I wasn’t as bold as Amy, my sister, who would come in and take money and then send someone else in to get more! I also remember decorating the shop for Christmas and that was always fun.” When Lee’s shop was downtown, his family said that it was normal to see judges and mayors come through the door on their lunch break. However, when I asked Lee if he ever had any famous or important customers, he said, “They are all important to me.” It is easy to see that Lee does not just love what he does, he loves the people that walk through the door. “I enjoy people, and I have known a lot of people over the years,” Lee says. “I’ve actually worked on generations of people since I’ve been doing this 58

Lee has that dollar framed in his shop. He tells me that it is a 1930’s series bill, and it has traveled with Lee from shop to shop. Unfortunately, Lundy died in December of 1961, so Lee had to find another master barber. Then, in 1967, Lee opened his own barber shop in downtown Maud where Maud Maid, the ice cream factory, had been housed before being asked to shut down by Borden. City Hall is housed in the building now. Lee says that, unfortunately, the ice cream smell was all gone when he moved in.

years. I have customers that I’ve had since I’ve started. My oldest customer is 100. He actually lives out on 82 east on the Arkansas side of Texarkana. He still wants a flat top, which was the big haircut back when I started. However, when the Beatles came along, I had to go to Red River and work a second job because no one wanted to cut their hair!” In 1974, the shop slowed down, and Lee decided he needed to take on a second job. He started at Red River Army Depot and worked part time as a barber. Working two jobs came naturally to Lee who believes that “you do what you’ve got to do.” He retired in 1995 from Red River, but in 2001, the contractors called him and asked him to come back. He worked another 13 years, mainly on the night shift. He would come home in the morning and open up the shop three days a week from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the same hours he keeps today. Kasey Coggin, principal for Redwater Elementary School, is Lee’s granddaughter, and she recognized his work ethic from a young age. Lee’s five grandchildren and three great grandchildren affectionately call him Papa Lee. “Papa Lee always worked two jobs growing up,” Kasey says. “I definitely think this was something he learned from his mom and dad, and I was able to see that growing up as well. I have a pretty strong work ethic, and I know that comes from being raised around people like him.” In 1985, Lee and his father-in-law, built the current Hilton’s Barber Shop in Lee’s front yard so that he could be close to home. The new location meant that the barber shop became even more of a family business. Lee’s eldest daughter, Tammy, lives right next door. The family, especially Tammy’s son Cody, loves to go for dinner at Lee and Linda’s most nights. Growing up, the grandkids would go to Papa Lee and Nanny’s house for breakfast because Tammy had to work so early. “She would drop us off and Papa would get up and make us breakfast. He even let us go to the shop and talk to customers,” Kasey says. “But, when we started playing and goofing off, we had to go back outside. I don’t know how they put up with all of us. We were here all the time!” Kasey recalls a funny story from her childhood. She would come into the barber store and organize the magazine rack. One time, a customer gave her a tip, and the next time she came in, she asked a customer who was there for a haircut for a tip. “I got in big

trouble from Papa Lee!” Kasey says. “I just thought it was expected!” Even when Lee was working two jobs, the barber shop rarely closed. “Looking back, even though he was at Red River, you could tell that the barber shop was his passion and where he found joy,” Kasey says. “I remember one time that Papa was very sick. My Nanny had to make him to put a sign on the door that said the barber shop was closed, and he was unable to work. But you could tell that it bothered him to let his customers down. It’s inspiring to see him build these relationships with customers and to see the work ethic that is there.”

I’m not in a hurry. I try to satisfy myself before I take the cloth off. I try to do it the way they want it done, no matter what I think about it, but I want it to be done well.” The waiting area is a place for people watching. Lee may be cutting a life-time customer’s hair or his greatgranddaughter’s bangs. He may be giving his grandson a shave or giving a little boy his first hair cut. As customers wait, the most popular pastime is found in a stack of old yearbooks by the book shelf. Customers look through the yearbooks to see what their fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers looked

like years ago. And as Lee cuts, he will easily make conversation with those around him, recalling names of people that have come in and out of his community and life throughout the years. “Recently, I ran into a couple at the store, and they told me that Papa had cut their hair for years. I think the longevity of his business, and the love that the community has for him says a lot,” Kasey says. “Year after year, customers keep coming back to the barber shop in the front yard, and Papa always has a smile on his face. When I look back over my childhood, I know that Papa Lee has been through a lot of things that not everybody can handle, and he has happiness in spite of those things. He is able to make people feel good about themselves, and he loves his family. He is always doing anything he can to make sure that everyone else is happy.”

BRENT BENNETT

Dr. Brent Bennett was born and raised in Magnolia, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas, and then attended the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock for medical school. Because of his practical personality, Dr. Bennett knew that he needed to find a job in high demand to ensure that he would be able to find a job after college; so, he chose medicine. “Turns out it was the right fit for me, because I enjoy going to work every day,” says Dr. Bennett. “I am lucky that I enjoy what I do.” Dr. Bennett and his wife, Morgan, moved to Texarkana so that he could attend the family practice residency program at UAMS Southwest. Now the couple is active in the community and members of First United Methodist in Texarkana, Arkansas. They also have two beautiful daughters: Maxwell, age five, and Madge, age two. Dr. Bennett has been a family practice physician in Hope, Arkansas, for four years. He has also been the Assistant Medical Director for Hospice of Texarkana for four years. “I am board certified in Family Medicine, but I also enjoy emergency medicine and palliative care,” Dr. Bennett says. “I chose family medicine because I love the clinic and

the long-term relationships that I develop with the patients and their families. I enjoy working in the emergency room, as well, because it maintains my procedural skills that I learned in residency. I also enjoy working with our team at Hospice of Texarkana providing excellent palliative services to patients at the end of their lives and supporting their families through a challenging time.” Dr. Bennett’s best advice to stay healthy is to schedule annual wellness visits with your family physician and follow his or her recommendations for preventative care and routine screenings. “Screening for, and early diagnosis, of things like breast cancer, colon cancer, and cervical cancer can drastically improve outcomes with these diseases,” Dr. Bennett says.

Dr. Adam Cox was born and raised in Atlanta, Texas. He graduated from Atlanta High School and completed his bachelor’s degree at Baylor University. Dr. Cox graduated as a Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston and started practicing at Family Eye Care Clinic in Atlanta, Texas, in 2012. EDWARD EICHLER

Dr. Edward â&#x20AC;&#x153;Edâ&#x20AC;? Eichler was born in Houston, Texas, and was raised with two siblings. After high school, he attended the University of Texas for his undergraduate degree, then University of Texas (UT) Medical School in Houston. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in Medical Oncology at the UT Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. While completing his residency, he met his wife, Gail, who was an RN in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. They met during a hurricane when the power went down at the hospital. All the patients in her unit were on ventilators and had to be moved to one central location. They worked together during that crisis and a romance was born. Gail and Ed married and moved to Texarkana in 1986 to begin his oncology practice and raised two sons here. They are members of Williams Memorial United Methodist Church. Dr. Eichler has been with Hospice of Texarkana as Volunteer Medical Director since 1987, two years after the nonprofit agency was founded. He has never received pay for his medical oversight which helped

the agency to grow and thrive. He also volunteers with the Ark-La-Tex 100 Club and The Clay Eichler Memorial Fund which was formed after the unexpected death of their son, Clay. Their oldest son, Edward, lives in Palisades, Colorado, and is an eighth-grade math teacher, basketball and track coach. Dr. Eichler specialized in medical oncology because he likes the patients and the challenge that is presented because of the medical situation they are in. He feels a lot of compassion for people and especially cancer patients. When he started his practice, society was different, and no one spoke of having cancer. There were no support groups either and he knew that patients needed emotional support.

Another reason he became a physician was that he was always good at math and science and was very interested in going into a field having to do with science. “It’s exciting to see the major strides that have been done in cancer therapy in the past few years,” Dr. Eichler says. “There are a lot of treatments available now that we didn’t offer in the past.” His best advice to stay healthy is to stay away from smoking, stay away from or limit alcohol consumption, exercise, and do everything in moderation.

MAGY ESKANDER

Dr. Magy Eskander was born in Luxor, Egypt. Her family immigrated in 1996 to Shreveport, Louisiana, when Dr. Eskander was only nine-years-old. She went on to finish school in Shreveport and attend Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport for medical school. She completed her residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, Texas, at the Ruiz Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. For Dr. Eskander, the medical field is a family business. Both of her parents are physicians. Her father was a general surgeon in Egypt, but after completing a new residency in the United States, he practices family medicine. Her mother was a practicing pediatrician in Egypt. Dr. Eskander’s sister is a family medicine physician in Shreveport. “I went into medicine because my family consists of all physicians. I also love helping and caring for people,” Dr. Eskander says. “It honestly felt like a calling more than a profession.” Dr. Eskander specializes in ophthalmology. She completed three years of practice in residency and focused her last year on surgery. Now, she has been doing private practice for the last three years. The choice to focus on ophthalmology was inspired from an event in her childhood. “I have always loved ophthalmology. When I was younger, I had a minor corneal abrasion (cornea scratch that healed completely) that was treated by my aunt who is an

ophthalmologist. Since then I have always loved the field,” Dr. Eskander says. “I love that I can help people see better after cataract surgery or by simply giving them glasses or contact lenses. I enjoy both operating and seeing patients in clinic. It’s amazing to visit with patients in clinic and help them with problems like dry eyes that are affecting their daily lives.” For Dr. Eskander the best advice in general for staying healthy is eating well and getting exercise. “However, my best advice for ophthalmology is a little different,” Dr. Eskander says. “Wear sunglasses when out in the sun, use artificial tears, and get a regular eye exam to see if there is anything that needs monitoring or treatment to prevent progression like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.”

Heidi Smith was born and raised in Texarkana, Texas. She attended school at the University of Mississippi where she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing and primarily worked in the operating room. She received her Master of Science in nursing as a family nurse practitioner from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2018. She currently resides in Texarkana and has a three year-old-daughter. Heidi currently works as a family nurse practitioner at Collom and Carney in General Surgery, and she has been at her current job almost a year. She worked in surgery over seven years as an RN prior to becoming a nurse practitioner. “I wanted to help people lead a better quality of life.” Heidi says. Her advice for staying healthy includes starting at a young age. “Take care of your body while you’re young,” Heidi says. “The effects of poor health decisions while you're young can cause a negative impact as you age.”

Jayme Smalley was born in McCrory, Arkansas, then raised in West Memphis and Bald Knob respectively. Following graduation from high school, she attended Arkansas State University where she graduated with her Nursing Degree. She and her husband Wade have been married for 24 years and have four childrenHaleigh, Allicyn, Hannah Beth and Grant, who is their only child still at home. Grant attends Pleasant Grove High School where he is a Freshman. The Smalleys also have three wonderful grandsons: Gaige, Briar, & Grayson, as well as one on the way in December, who is also a boy. Smalley has been in nursing for 26 years, with the last 15 years spent as a Nurse Leader. When asked if she specializes in a specific part of this profession, she says, “This would be a two part answer for me. My first professional love will always be Emergency Medicine. This stems from an ER visit my Grandpa had when I was in High School. The rapid assessment and

Jennifer Thompson was born in Dallas, Texas. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, in psychology and then attended medical school at the University of Texas San Antonio and residency at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Thompson is married to Dr. Doug Thompson, an orthopaedic surgeon, and they have two kids, Elena and Caden. “I went into medicine because I love the challenge,” Dr. Thompson says. “It’s a great mix of science, creativity, and a chance to give back to society.” Dr. Thompson has worked as a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist for 23 years. Her special interests include minimally invasive gynecological surgery and infertility. “I absolutely love delivering babies,” Dr. Thompson says. “I chose this profession because I love taking care of this patient population. Dr. David Whitten was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, and grew up in Bearden, Magnolia and Mt. Holly before going off to Harvard. He then attended the University of California and Tulane for medical school and graduate school. “I went into medicine after I had already established myself as a scientist, teacher, and researcher because I wanted to be active in the real-life application of my years of training as a scientist,” Dr. Whitten says. He specialized in emergency medicine and was Chief of Emergency Medicine in hospitals in California, North Carolina, and Texas. “I went into the specialty because, although it is a very broad practice, it focuses on the most critically ill and injured at the very nexus of life or death, requiring the immediate application of everything I have learned in medicine and physiology over the many years I spent in education and training,” Dr. Whitten says. He returned to the Texarkana area to open his practice on Cowhorn Creek Road to be closer to his mom who is still living in Bearden, AR, about a quarter

When and where were you born? How old were you when you joined the service you are in?

I was born in December of 1990 here in Texarkana. I was 24 years old when I joined.

What is your job title? When did you start?

My job title is patrol officer. I started the patrol division after I graduated the police academy in 2015.

What moment in life convinced you that this is what you wanted?

I knew I wanted to be a police officer after I received an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps. I felt my calling in life was to serve my country and my community and I knew I wanted to continue my service in my hometown.

What was your first day on the job like?

I remember being nervous but excited at the same time. I specifically remember thinking to myself â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the greatest decision I have ever made.â&#x20AC;? I was immediately hooked on this profession. I knew from that moment on this was the career path for me.

Were you awarded any metals or citations? If so, what for?

What was the funniest moment you remember from being in your current position?

I have received a few letters of commendation. The one that means the most to me was the night I observed and identified a wanted suspect inside a gas station. As soon as he saw me, he began to flee out of the store. He was wanted for numerous crimes on both sides of Texarkana along with the Wake Village Police Department. These crimes included auto theft, property theft and burglary. After I caught him and arrested him, I also arrested a female who was with him inside the store. It was later determined she was wanted for the battery of an elderly man after she tied him up, assaulted him and left him injured in a bathtub.

I remember one night we were searching a wooded area for a suspect who was wanted in a battery where the victim was seriously injured. Looking for someone like that in the middle of the woods at night, who we know is aggressive gets your adrenaline pumping, so I was already on my toes. As I continued down this trail, I heard something over my shoulder. I looked up and saw a racoon jump out of a tree directly towards me. I almost came out of my boots that night and the other officers who were with me laughed harder than Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever seen them laugh before.

Did you ever pull a prank while on the job?

The funniest prank I’ve ever pulled at work was watching one of my fellow officers walk into an EZ Mart after I had just exited the store. I noticed he left his car running with the key in the ignition, so I decided to teach him a lesson. I pulled his car to the other side of the store to where he couldn’t see it. The look on his face when he walked out of the store and noticed his patrol car was missing was priceless. I think he learned his lesson; he has never left his car running again.

What was the most exciting, adrenaline pumping moment you had while being on duty?

There have been many exciting moments while I have been a patrol officer, but I would say the one that sticks out the most is the night I made a traffic stop on someone and they began to flee in their vehicle. I pursued this person for about 5 minutes until he wrecked into a fence off of Stateline. He immediately jumped out of the truck and fled on foot through a parking lot that had numerous vehicles parked in it. Not knowing if this person was armed or not, and checking each corner very carefully, I finally located him hiding behind one of these cars. He had a knife with a very long blade in his possession and a few bags of narcotics. When you’re searching a dark area for someone that will do anything not to get arrested, it definitely sends a strong feeling down your spine.

How has being in this position effected your life?

How do/did you handle the stress and pressure the job brings?

I really enjoy the outdoors, hunting, fishing, biking, and being around friends. I’ve also been playing golf for more than 20 years, so anytime I get the chance to do one of those things I take it. Any of those hobbies always gets my mind off the job and helps relieve some of the pressure from what this job brings.

Have you ever been wounded or injured on the job? No.

With your experience today, what has it done for you that is positive?

It has matured me and made me who I am today. I’ve become more open to the people in my community and I truly enjoy getting to know everyone in this town. It has made me realize that the next day is not promised, so I live everyday like it was my last. I don’t take anything for granted and I feel like I am closer to my family and friends than I have ever been before.

How does your family handle your chose of profession?

I think my mom worries a little more than my dad. Growing up watching the tv show “cops” together, my Dad is always asking me if anything exciting happened on my shift. We could talk for hours about my night on patrol.

In my opinion, there truly is nothing like the feeling you’ve done something to make someone else’s life just a little better and being a patrol officer gives you that feeling all the time. Growing up, I never thought I would be put in the position where I could make people smile and laugh, just from talking to them for a few minutes. Don’t get me wrong, this job has affected me as a person in a way that makes me see the world in a different perspective. It keeps me on my toes 24/7 and I always have my guard up, but I wouldn’t change that for anything. It makes it all worth it when you help those who can’t help themselves or when you walk through the schools and see all those kids wanting to hug you or thank you for protecting them. Sports Highlight Kenzie Cowan Kenzie Cowan, a senior at Foreman High School in Foreman, Arkansas, is one driven young lady. While participating as a student athlete, she has been a part of the State Championship team in track, qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships in Sacramento, California, trained daily with her track coach, endured long summer hours with her club track coach, and through all of this, maintains a 4.0 GPA. Kenize began her athletic career at the age of three when she started playing tee-ball. Through the years, she has exuded her athleticism through golf, cheerleading, basketball, track and softball; however, track has always been her favorite sport. In the sport of track, Kenzie excels at performing in several different events. “In high school, they limit each individual to only six events and I have always been able to compete and qualify for state in all six,” Kenzie says. One of her long-term goals for her sport is to improve in every track event she participates in this year. “My goal is to help our high school team win another State Championship. Also, I think I want to work towards competing in a heptathlon.” A heptathlon, an athletic competition which amounts to athletes competing in seven different track and field events over a period of two days, is part of Kenzie’s motivation and goals to strive for. At the moment, Kenzie has not decided on participating in track after high school. She stated, “I am not really sure at the moment, but I could possibly see myself competing after high school. I say this because I think track is fun and it keeps you in shape.” During this time of being a student athlete at Foreman, Kenzie attributes the best part to her teachers and school staff that support her in both athletics and academics. There is a delicate balance with athletics and academics, but Kenize believes with good time management skills, it is very possible. “You have to be okay with a lot of late nights, early mornings, and long weekends spent on school work too,” she said. Not only does Kenzie receive amazing support from her school, but from family and other trainers. Kenzie says, “My dad has been one of my coaches throughout my life, so I have to say he is my favorite. I have also learned so much from all of my other coaches and trainers as well. I think it is neat that my summer track coach still competes at the master’s level in world competitions, in the same events that I participate in, and she wins!” When track is not in season, Kenzie stays active by practicing and playing in all of the other sports. Beyond the other practices, she trains with her club track team and works on speed and agility in the fall. 046 ALT Magazine September 2019

Step-ups in action

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Urban Fishing? There seems to be an underground fishing group in this world. They are Urban Fishermen. These fishermen fish in the middle of cities in some of the most unlikely spots. For example, I found out there is a healthy fishery in the San Antonio River Walk area and in some creeks in and around downtown Austin, Dallas, as well as Houston. These fishermen fish mostly for everything. Bass, bream and catfish are all fair game. I watched several videos and thought that the fishing was pretty good since not many people fish downtown. These folks tend to be bank fishermen, but a few places are right for a kayak and these folks are serious about their fishing. Catch and release is the norm, just like other places and it seems like a good way to get in some fishing while on a trip. Just take a rod you can break down in a case and put your reel and tackle in your bag or carry on. Check on fishing possibilities before you leave and you can get your fishing fix in some different places fishing a different way. As hot as it has been lately and not much in the way of cooling coming till October, be sure to take a bunch of water, Gatorade or something with you. Heat stroke is not fun.

The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is proud to partner with Texarkana Emergency Center in an effort to remove unused and out of date prescription medicines from your homes. •It is important to know that law enforcement is only interested in the removal of unused and/or outdated medications from the homes of our citizens. •It matters not whose name is on the prescription, by whom it was prescribed, where it was prescribed, or where you reside. •We stress that it makes no difference if you live in Texas or Arkansas. •We take back all medications, no questions asked. You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary. •We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers.
