FROM THE PUBLISHER DEBBIE BROWER
My friend Ashley Cooper and I have a running joke about our foster mom abilities. We seem to have hearts that are too big and too soft to be able to let them go. So we have a few at our houses -- we just aren’t telling how many are ours and how many are really fosters! HAHA! The problem is that there are not enough people willing to foster to really make a dent in helping the overpopulation of animals in our area. Much as we try, we cannot save every animal someone contacts us about. It is heartbreaking. We keep trying though. My wish is that everyone would spay/ neuter their pets and help control unwanted animals. There is a wonderful group of women I call my best friends who work tirelessly to help unwanted animals in the area. They are now known as Partners for Paws Texarkana. These women got together two years ago and decided to DO something -- and they did. From small dogs to big dogs, kittens to feral cats, they are on a mission. I love them with all my heart. So here is a shout out to my amazing friends who continue on despite the overwhelming odds against them... Ashley Harris, Kandy Hirsch, Anita McCullough, Jaime Knighton, Robin Bridges, Beverly Carter, Anita Carver, Jaclyn Gooding, Deanna Honea, Dawn Smith, Amy Steed, and Brenda Williamson -- you are all amazing! 08 ALT Magazine | December 2016
It is difficult for any of us to understand what makes people treat animals like some do. Meet William -- who came to me from the shelter with a leg that was COMPLETELY broken off. A woman found him in the edge of the woods, covered in fleas and starving. In fact, you could see every bone in his little 5 pound body. After surgery to cut off part of the broken bone and put it back together, good food and lots of love, this baby thrived -- now weighing in at 9 pounds! If you didn’t know it was him, you wouldn’t not recognize him. He is known as my “Little Man” and will always be in my heart. Little Man went to his new home recently and although I never feel like anyone could be as good as me and my house, he is really doing great. Mary Jackson updates me regularly on how he is doing which helps a lot. She is an amazing doggy mommy and I knew he would be good in her hands -- and heart. Please open up your heart this Christmas and consider fostering or adopting a pet in need. The life you save allows us to help just one more. Fostering saves so many lives. If William had not been pulled from the shelter, he would not have survived. He could barely stand because he had no nourishment in his body and was so weak we had to hold him up. From a thrown away baby to a life of love and caring, William was one of the lucky ones. Please help us bring luck to others. If you can’t help by fostering
or adopting, donations are always welcome. Please donate on-line at www.pawstexarkana.org. The funds you give will help so many find new homes, giving others a chance to follow suit. May God bless you and yours.

MATTHEW BARRETT
CHRISTEN BLAKE
PHILIP DEROUEN
REBEKAH DRENNON
A junior transfer student from Shasta College in Redding, California, Matthew Barrett says he chose A&M-Texarkana because it offered the degree he wanted – electrical engineering – and the opportunity to play baseball.
For Christen Blake, of Flower Mound, Texas, being a student ambassador is a natural extension of her outgoing personality.
Like many of the student ambassadors, Philip DeRouen is a well-rounded student.
For Rebekah Drennon, a sophomore double major in mass communication and kinesiology from Mineola, Texas, A&MTexarkana was an easy choice.
“I really enjoy being a student ambassador because it’s helped me get to know people and make connections,” he says. “Being involved on campus has also helped me acclimate to the area.” Upon graduating from A&M-Texarkana, Matthew plans to work for the military. “I’m really enjoying my time at A&M-Texarkana. The professors are great. They’re fair, and they build good relationships with students.”
The double major in biology and psychology plans to attend medical school and to become an inpatient pediatric psychiatrist with a specialization in oncology. “As a member of The Texas A&M University System, I knew A&MTexarkana would academically prepare me for the future,” Christen says. “I fell in love with A&MTexarkana when I toured the campus and met the students and faculty. It’s like a family.” As an ambassador, vice president of sisterhood for her sorority, Omega Delta Chi, and the lead event coordinator for the Campus Activities Board, Christen enjoys being able to help the university grow and to create traditions that will continue in the future.” “When you step on campus, you feel accepted. It’s an amazing atmosphere,” she says.
The freshman nursing major from Lafayette, Louisiana, plays on the Eagles baseball team and is a member of Phi Lambda Chi fraternity, the Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board. “I like the fact that A&M-Texarkana is a medium-sized campus and that I get to watch the school grow to its full potential,” Philip says. “I am blessed, and I feel honored to be an ambassador.”
“I like the small campus atmosphere and the fact that I get to know all of my professors,” Rebekah says. “I love being an ambassador because I get to represent the student body at different events and to interact with many people outside of the university. In addition to her service as an ambassador, Rebekah is involved in the Student Government Association, Omega Delta Chi sorority, Campus Activities Board and the University Honors program. She plans to obtain a master’s degree in nutrition and to go into sports public relations and travel with a pro team.

Son Lam grew up in Soc Trang, a small town in Vietnam, where his family owns a manufacturing company that produces Chinese sauces and cakes.
A sophomore biology major from Van Alstyne, Texas, Roya Morakabian transferred to A&MTexarkana this fall from the University of TexasDallas.
While in Texarkana, he because acquainted with the university through his host parents Jack and Glenda Ballard, who at that time served as dean of the College of Education and Liberal Arts. Upon completing high school in Russia, Petr entered medical school for a short time. In spring 2016, he decided to transfer to A&M-Texarkana to pursue a degree in chemistry. The son of a surgeon, Petr plans to attend medical school to become a physician. As an ambassador, Petr says he enjoys interacting with students, professors and friends of the university. “Being an ambassador is interesting for me. I haven’t had an experience like this before. We don’t have this type of program in Russia.” An ardent musician, Petr enjoys taking piano classes from Mary Scott Goode at Texarkana College. In addition to the piano, he plays the clarinet, saxophone, Irish whistle, harmonica and guitar.
The president of the International Students Club, vice president of the Eagles Business Club and a student-worker in the John F. Moss Library makes sure he has time for his studies and extracurricular activities. “I enjoy working with students and meeting people from the community,” Son says, adding that he is a “people person” who seeks balance in his life. The junior business administration major with a concentration in marketing will graduate from A&M-Texarkana in May 2017. He plans to obtain a Master of Business Administration and ultimately a PhD, with a goal of becoming a university professor.
“I really like that I know most of the students, faculty and staff at the university,” Roya says. “I consider it a privilege and an honor to serve as a student ambassador.” Roya is very active on campus, serving on the Campus Activities Board, the Student Government Association and as a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and the art club. She’s also helping to form a new chapter of TriBeta, an international biology society. “This time nine months ago, I was looking for a small campus. All of the chips fell into place, and I found A&M-Texarkana. I really enjoy being here. It feels like home.”

TEXARKANA COLLEGE’S NURSING PROGRAM HAS A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE.
WITH many nursing programs available
WORDS ANNE GRANADO
HOALMIRE
in our area, one might think that the job market is saturated with the profession. However, our community and the rest of the United States continues to suffer from a nursing shortage. Luckily, those who are considering one of the fastest growing careers in America needn’t look far from home for an accredited program with a history of excellence. In fact, that is exactly what Courtney Shoalmire did. After graduation from Pleasant Grove, Courtney began her nursing journey at Texarkana College and then went on to get her BSN, an MNSc and MSN in nursing. She has now returned to her alma mater to continue working with nursing students as they pursue their goals and was named Dean of the William R. Patterson Health Sciences Division in January of last year. “Nursing is an important profession because it not only helps people regain their health, it helps them maintain their well-being. Nurses have to be able to take care of a person on their worst day, and they often have to put themselves aside in order to help and treat someone else,” Courtney says. “Nursing is that piece of the healthcare puzzle that links all the other parts together from the physician to the respiratory therapist to the speech therapist and so on. Nursing ALT-Mag.com | December 2016 023
helps all the other pieces work together.” Courtney grew up witnessing this kind of dedication. Her mom was a Texarkana College graduate and a home health nurse. In Courtney’s home, there was never a question of going to college, just where she wanted to go and what she would study. “It was just a natural expectation that I would go to college and then pursue a master’s degree,” Courtney says. “I’m the oldest of four sisters and two brothers. We all have at least one master’s degree. One of my sisters has a PhD, and one of my other sisters and I have two master’s degrees. Higher education was always encouraged in my house.” Not only was Courtney inspired from her mom’s occupation, she also grew up loving science and studying how the body works; nursing was a natural fit for her personal interests, and Texarkana College was an accredited nursing school with a high licensure passing rate here at home. In fact, Texarkana College was the first associate degree nursing program in the state of Texas and was the first accredited program in Texas. They offer several different programs for students pursuing a nursing career: vocational nursing, an associate degree in nursing, and a pathway to a bachelor of science in nursing where two years are completed at TC, and two more are completed through A&M Texarkana. They also have programs for paramedics, certified nurse assistants, pharmacy techs, and a medical office careers certificate. “Once I decided to study nursing, I didn’t see a reason to go anywhere else. There was a wonderful program here in Texarkana,” Courtney says. “Over the years, that program has continued to grow and expand. There are so many opportunities for students here, and we are continually working towards how we can better meet the needs of our graduates.” After Courtney finished her associate’s degree program at Texarkana College, she went on to pursue her BSN at UAMS through their completion program. Then, she got her MNSc,
024 ALT Magazine | December 2016
master’s of nursing science, through UAMS as well. When she graduated from the UAMS program in Little Rock, Courtney took a job teaching nursing for UAMS in Hope, AR. She ended up spending ten years in the classroom. “I had two groups of students that I just loved to teach,” Courtney says. “I enjoyed teaching the students who were just starting out in the nursing program. They were so eager, and they would think that just taking a blood pressure was saving the world. It was so exciting to see them on that journey. Next, I loved teaching the students in their final semester of nursing school. There at the end, everything starts coming together and making sense to them. I would look at them and know that they were ready to take their NCLEX (licensure) exam to become a member of the profession.” Though she enjoyed teaching, Courtney wanted to pursue administrative work after 10 years in the classroom, so she enrolled at Loyola University to get her second master’s, a MSN or master of science in nursing in Healthcare Systems Management. “Having a higher education, studying something and completing a program of study can help you in all areas of life. It teaches you skills like time management, professional communication, being part of a team, setting goals and working hard to reach those goals,” Courtney says. After she graduated, she applied for a position as grant project director at Texarkana College and worked on a team to procure 1.67 million dollars from a U.S. Department of Labor Grant. This grant helped provide a new simulation lab for nursing students at Texarkana College. In January 2015, Courtney applied for the new Dean of the William R. Patterson Health Sciences Division and accepted the position. “I was very excited to accept the position, but I was nervous. I had never managed this great number of people,” Courtney says. “My position oversees the
vocational nursing, ADN, paramedic, pharmacy tech and CNA programs. My job is to make sure that all of these programs are meeting Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) regulations and maintaining state requirements. Though there are a lot of things to oversee, I love leading this incredibly gifted faculty who are passionate about education and student success.” Since accepting the dean’s position, Courtney has been focused on continuing the tradition of excellence in TC’s nursing programs. When Courtney was a student at TC, she mainly learned from textbooks, lecture and video with a few training models and mannequins for extra practice. However, Texarkana College has since revolutionized its program. “When I was going through school, we didn’t even all have a computer,” Courtney says. “Today students have so much technology to support learning in the classroom and at home. They have access to online support, practice quizzes, study guides and videos. Plus, the equipment in the classroom is much more life-like. It really gives students a
026 ALT Magazine | December 2016
taste of what they will face in the profession.” Courtney says that Texarkana College has been fortunate to receive several grants that have helped them purchase state-ofthe-art simulation equipment and training models. A visitor to the program would find two mock hospital rooms and several high-fidelity patient simulators. With these simulators, instructors can control the heart rate, blood pressure, and other vitals, giving the nursing students a more realistic learning environment. “The equipment allows students to practice skills and scenarios in conjunction with taking care of people in the hospital,” Courtney says. “It’s a safe place to learn and to make mistakes.” The new equipment will soon be joined by a simulation mom, simulation baby, and five more mannequins. Plus, they will be adding three more hospital rooms, including a labor and delivery room, pediatric unit and nursery. “The health care system is increasingly hard to navigate. There are new health care tests and treatments all the time. Our programs have to stay up-todate, and we hope we are making a positive impact in our community by teaching upto-date information and providing hands on practices,” Courtney says. This dedication to modernizing their equipment is only one way that Courtney believes the program at TC is unique. They provide a wide variety of programs, and they provide several certification avenues to meet students’ needs. Students can complete their associate degree and pass the NCLEX to become an RN after only two years. Then, they can find employment and still enroll for the last two years as a completion for their bachelor’s degree. They also offer a transitional program for those with a VN who want an associate degree. She explains that TC offers 20 full-time nursing faculty members with decades of experience. Many of their faculty still work in the healthcare field. “Our staff is always here to help students,” Courtney says. “There is never a day when I walk up to my office that I don’t see students lined up at our faculty’s doors. Being a nurse educator is such an important position. Their students will go out and touch so many people’s lives. Without nurse educators, that wouldn’t be possible. Their efforts in the classroom make a difference in thousands of people’s lives.” The Health Sciences division has also had the same administrative assistant since 1978. Ms. Linda Arnold is a mainstay in the Health Sciences department. “Linda’s remarkable organizational skills keep each program and the faculty in order. She has helped thousands of students attain a higher education credential over the years. Her vast knowledge about the history of the programs and how to keep them running

smoothly is invaluable to us,” Courtney says. Mrs. Arnold is not the only staff member that is a constant part of the student’s journey at TC. When students want to enroll, they will all talk to the same academic advisor, Mrs. Karen Holt. “I think it’s a really unique experience to have one specific academic advisor,” Courtney says. “You don’t often get that at one of the bigger universities. Here, every student from VN to ADN to pharmacy tech will be helped by her. She helps make sure that all students are meeting their qualifications and graduation requirements. She knows our students and helps make sure they are successful.” Not only does TC offer personal support for their students through facilities and faculty, TC offers scholarships through their presidential scholars program that pays full tuition and fees for students who want to pursue an associate degree. “These scholarships are paid for from the TC foundation for students who have worked hard in high school,” Courtney says. “Students can literally graduate with their Associate Degree in Nursing and no debt. This program offers opportunities to students who would never have had the chance to pursue a higher education.” While all of these aspects make TC’s program unique, as Dean, Courtney has even more goals to help make the William Patterson School of Health Sciences a program that continues to provide for the needs of students in this community. She wants to increase professional development for her instructors in the field of education. She wants to start and increase online theory courses. However, the biggest goal on her horizon is helping to
028 ALT Magazine | December 2016
make sure the pharmacy tech and paramedic programs become accredited. The paramedic program has already had a site visit from the accreditation board and are awaiting to hear their decision. “Having an accredited program is proof to the students and to the public that you are meeting a higher standard than the minimum,” Courtney says. “Also, as licensure expectations increase, we want to meet those needs on this campus for those programs.” The proof that TC is meeting the needs of its students is found in their statistics. They have a 90.14% passing rate for licensure on the NCLEX-RN exam and a 100% pass rate for licensure on the NCLEX-PN exam. They also have an above 90% employment rate after graduation. With these accredited programs offered in our own community, students can find a degree plan that meets their needs and know that a job is waiting for them when they are done. “Higher education is important; not only for the skills it teaches you, but also for the leg up it gives you in an increasingly competitive job market. Plus, as our president, James Henry Russell, always says, ‘A person with an associate degree or certificate makes approximately $500,000 more over their lifetime than someone with no higher educational credential,’” Courtney says. “The nursing program at TC helps our students get the education they need to be successful in this field and feel confident as they start work. With quality programs like the ones at TC so close to home, higher education can be a reality for any student who wants to pursue it.”

Like Mother, Like Daughter: Tammy Goodwin and Dr. Loni Taylor Make Education a Family Affair at the University of Arkansas Community College-Hope/Texarkana
A mother is a daughter’s first and most influential example. She is a pillar of encouragement and guidance far after a child reaches adulthood. For Loni Taylor and her mother, Tammy Goodwin, their bond has grown to also include the camaraderie of being colleagues at UACCH in Texarkana. Tammy, a native of Hot Springs, AR, received both her BS and Masters in Nursing Science from UAMES. Her daughter and only child, Loni, a native of Hope, AR, received a BS in Agriculture Science with Minors in Biology and Chemistry, followed by a 032 ALT Magazine | December 2016

Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri. Before taking her position at the college, Tammy worked as an R.N, yet she has always had the desire to enter the field of education. “I always felt led to teach and when the opportunity arose to teach others in my profession, I left clinical nursing to become a full time educator.” She now works as the college’s Licensed Practical Nursing Program Coordinator. Loni’s entrance into education was sparked by her love for science and medicine. “I have always had a passion for medicine, so when the opportunity presented itself to work with the Pre-Professional Medical/Science major it seemed to be a perfect fit,” Loni says. She currently teaches Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Biology, and Nutrition. While they enjoy the novelty of being both relatives and colleagues, teaching at the same school was something they never planned on purposely. “God directed our paths [and] this is where we both were led to be. [It’s] a total bonus,” they said. Many of their students find it interesting that they will start out their studies with Dr. Taylor and continue on with her mother in nursing school. While they both agree that working together makes for a wonderful and positive work environment, they’ve found that most of their casual conversations outside of work are still centered around their professions, which can be a disadvantage. 034 ALT Magazine | December 2016
Outside of work together, the two like to spend time with the entire family in their cabin in the Ouachitas. Loni and her husband, Chris Taylor, have two children, Adeline (4) and Asher (1). Tammy and her husband, also named Lonny, recently celebrated their 36th anniversary. Both mother and daughter consider their positions to be a part of their purpose and calling. They look forward to continue to lend themselves to each of their respective professions in any way that God sees fit for in the future. “I would like to continue educating those interested in medical fields,” Loni says. “I am excited to see where God will take my career in the years to come. I [plan] to also continue my equine veterinary practice on the side. [I] enjoy the patients and clients immensely.” Likewise, Tammy is glad to continue serving in the capacity as an educator and has even considered the possibility of sharing her expertise abroad. “I wish to remain here as a nurse educator as long as I am needed and purposeful in this role,” Tammy says. “I plan to continue my medical mission work overseas.” Overall, both embrace the unique opportunity they were blessed to share. “We never anticipated that we would find ourselves in these circumstances of working together. We are truly enjoying all the aspects of intermingling our fields and careers.”

5 tax tasks to complete by the end of this year 1. Talk to your CPA before the busy tax season. He or she can help you to determine if you have paid enough in state and federal taxes for 2016. If you haven’t, you may face a penalty if you do not pay by December 31.
3. Contribute to charity. If you would like your charitable giving to be considered tax deductible for the year of 2016, you must make these gifts before December 31. There are several other factors to keep in mind to make the most of your taxdeductible gift, including keeping track of receipts and value.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Cabela’s The New Bass Pro? Just a year or so ago, Bass Pro bought Ranger boats. Now they want to buy Cabela’s. Johnny Morris seems intent on gobbling up other companies the same way PRADCO did several years ago in order to gain somewhat of a monopoly on part of the fishing/hunting business. Right now, Bass Pro has a tackle business, hunting business, an “A” line boat and a “C” line boat. It may not be long until they have Cabela’s, which will add more (99) stores and more business to the already fishing empire that is Bass Pro Shop. I don’t know why, but when I read about the Cabela’s buyout, my first thought was the Biff Tannen “Pleasure Palace” from Back to the Future 3 and how Biff controls the town of Hill Valley. I guess if the SEC ok’s the deal then we will all be Bass Pro customers and your Cabela’s credit card will now be a Bass Pro. Very soon we will be calling Bass Pro the “Evil Empire” and seeing memes of Johnny Morris as Darth Vader telling us the fishing world is full of rebels and they must be defeated.

The Nutcracker Presented by Texarkana Community Ballet For over 20 years, Texarkana Community Ballet has presented The Nutcracker, with music by the Russian composer Tchaikovsky. A beloved Texarkana holiday tradition, this very classical story takes you through Clara’s holiday evening filled with glamorous and colorful costumes, amazing sets and some spectacular choreography. The Nutcracker blends a turn of the century style with pageantry and flare that defines the Christmas season. You can put the lights up on the house, you can put a tree up in the den, but it’s not Christmas until you’re traveled to the magical place Texarkana Community Ballet takes you! Friday, December 2nd at 7:00PM Saturday, December 3rd at 7:00PM Sunday, December 4th at 2:00PM (matinee)
