FROM THE PUBLISHER DEBBIE BROWER

I have the most amazing group of friends that I am thankful for. They are from all different walks of life, and we have lots of different interests. Some I met through business, some I met through my interest in animal rescue, some I met through church, and some I just met. Doesn’t matter, I love them all the same. This month, our two feature stories are about men I consider my friends. For years I have known who Raymond Calhoun was. It was only in the past few years that I really got to know him as he came to help us at our indoor gun range. He is so knowledgable about so many things and loves life and helping others. Just my kind of person! Reading his story makes you realize just what remarkable people our veterans and police officers can be. As for James Herrington, we met through my photography studio. I have been taking photos of him for many years and have come to know him as someone who loves his family, loves his job, and loves to hunt! I absolutely loved all of the photos of him and his family, on hunting expeditions. It shows you how you can include family in all your extracurricular activities -- and have fun doing it. There are so many people who I con-

sider my good friends. I pray each and every night and thank God for the many people He has blessed me with. I would start to name them all, but I know somehow I would leave someone out and feelings would be hurt. So just know that I love all of you. The ones I will name are those who are each others’ support system in animal rescue. This amazing group of women is absolutely dedicated to helping animals in need. Since I do know the entire list of them, here you go: Ashley Harris, Kandy Hirsch, Anita McCullough, Jaime Knighton, Robin Bridges, Beverly Carter, Jaclyn Gooding, Deanna Honea, Dawn Smith, Amy Steed, and Brenda Williamson. If you know these women, you know how passionate they are about animals! And for me, they just understand. I have loved dogs my entire life. My first pet, a chihuahua named Friskie, was the beginning. I can still see in my mind how she would run through our house, chasing us. We had hardwood floors and she could never quite make the turn into my parents’ bedroom and would go sliding and crashing into their dresser -- and my brother and I would laugh and laugh. She was always there when I was sick, to lay with me and be my friend. And she was there

to play “fort” -- with her fort being whatever blanket was on the floor, and our “safe places” being the twin beds. If you stepped off the bed onto the floor, she would eat you alive! We learned to be fast! As my mom tells me, it’s no wonder that I became so involved with helping animals as an adult. It is what I was meant to do. My friends, who are so much a part of my life, are sure to have their own stories. Whatever they are, I am glad they include me. Sometimes you have to grab life with both hands and do something. For me, I am doing just that. Find your something. And your amazing frineds to do that “something” with! May God bless you and yours.

VETERAN OFFICER BIKER For Raymond Calhoun, what could be better than retirement, a motorcycle to enjoy nice weather, traveling, and teaching others about safely handling guns? 016 ALT Magazine | November 2016

I

n today’s world, a scroll through the news channels is likely to bring up a story questioning the integrity of law enforcement. Public opinion vacillates in many communities over whether the men and women in uniform are truly there to protect and serve. In this current climate, the actions of the few are dictating the perception of the hundreds of thousands of others who make daily sacrifices, spending countless hours away from their families, running towards the sounds of gunshots, and protecting the ones they’ve sworn to protect. One such officer, Raymond Calhoun, has been in law enforcement in one way or another since he was 19 years old when he joined the Air Force and volunteered for security police detail. His 49 year career includes two tours in Vietnam, positions on both Texarkana, Arkansas and Texarkana, Texas police departments, and working for Texarkana Independent School District where he protected students and helped get several wayward young lives back on track. “The current situation towards law enforcement tends to classify all law enforcement personnel as dangerous to society. In reality, with screening and background checks, I would say an excess of 99% of officers are there to protect and serve the public. They take an oath and write a blank check to the public for whatever it takes, even up to a loss of life,” Raymond says.

After graduating from Arkansas High in 1964, Raymond went to Texarkana College one semester and then decided to join the Air Force. As a member of the security police, Raymond’s unit was responsible for the physical security of any Air Force installation. He was a member of a reaction mobility group that responded to any Air Force installation under attack. He completed two tours in Vietnam during his four years in the Air Force. When he came out of the service, Raymond began looking for a job in law enforcement. “I had two primary skills: weapons and dealing with intense situations. So, it seemed like law enforcement would be a natural fit,” Raymond says. In April of 1969, Raymond accepted a job with the TAPD. Over the next 44 years several law enforcement positions: TAPD, Lonestar as a guard, TTPD, Addison Police Department, Bowie County Sheriff’s Office, Board of Pardons and Paroles and Texarkana ISD Police Department. He retired December 31, 2014. “I spent my entire adult life in other people’s business, all day, every day,” Raymond says. “Why did I do it? I liked being able to go out and help people through tough times. Never did I see anyone who was having a good day. As an officer, I spent my time dealing with people who were having the worst day of their lives, and it felt good to try to help them through.” Raymond spent many days putting ALT-Mag.com | November 2016 017

his life on the line to help others. “Have you seen the commercial that says Marines run to the sound of chaos? Police run towards the sound of gunfire. They display a devotion to duty that most people fail to understand,” Raymond says. “Today, many people believe that officers are there to harass, but they are there to promote public safety and public well being. Society is like a herd of sheep. Outlaws are the wolves, and law enforcement are the sheepdogs trying to keep the wolves at bay. When you step between the sheep of society and the wolves there to prey on them, you put yourself at risk of being grouped with the violent people you are actually protecting the public from. The fact that the actions of the few are labeling all officers as bad is one of the greatest tragedies of our society.” There were many evenings when Raymond wasn’t sure if he would make it home to his wife, Connie, and two children, Randal and Michelle, and he knows this is true of so many other officers. “The families of law enforcement are serving the public in ways you can’t imagine. My wife put up with me working all hours and all shifts. It’s a tough job,” Raymond says. “In the same way the families of our military are serving,

018 ALT Magazine | November 2016

when their loved one leaves, there is no guarantee they will return. They put on that uniform, walk out that door and put their life on the line. And lately, the uniforms have become a target.” Every day presented a different challenge, and Raymond learned three major life lessons through his years in law enforcement: never accept anything at face value, expect the unexpected and God will get you through anything. “He never promised a smooth path, but He promised to help you through it,” Raymond says. For the last 14 years of his career, Raymond worked for the TISD Police Department. He refers to his position laughingly as the “roping unit” where he responded to various campuses and situations to protect students. He says he was a cop that put out “brush fires” created by students, parents or a combination of the two. However, when I asked him what stories really stood out in his career, Raymond immediately thought of one from his time at TISD. He said that he had stories from Vietnam and from the police force, but this was a story he would always remember. Raymond started meeting with a young lady when she

was only eight years old in the Texarkana Independent School District. Over the years she ended up in disciplinary classes, in school suspension and even alternative school. “From when she was eight to when she was a student at Texas High School, we talked on a pretty regular basis,” Raymond says. “After a while, we developed a friendship. We would sit and talk about what was going on at home and in the classroom. We talked about anger issues and whether or not they were directed at the right situation. She realized I was trying to help and not hinder her.” On the day she graduated, when she came off of the stage, Raymond greeted her with a dozen yellow roses. She was the first person in her family to ever graduate high school. “I was so proud of her. It’s something I will remember as long From days at the police department (bottom right), to TISD (left), Raymond was greeted by the love of his life, Connie, upon returning home (top right).

as I live,” Raymond says. “You can’t reach everyone. You can’t help everyone, but when you can, when you can open doors for them that no one in their family has opened, that is what makes it all worth it. I’ve seen her about 3 or 4 times since I retired, and she’s hugged my neck each time.” On December 31, 2014, Raymond retired from law enforcement. In his retirement, he likes to ride his motorcycle and spend time with his kids, grandkids and one great grandchild. Anyone could see the pride radiating from Raymond as he describes his two children. Randal lives in Spring, TX, and is a special investigative officer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Michelle lives in Texarkana, TX, and is a radiology dosimetrist at the Cancer Center at Saint Michael’s Hospital. Raymond calls her the “math whiz” who began at M.D. Anderson Hospital and now administers radiation to help treat cancer patients. “I enjoyed the feel of law enforcement. I could not imagine any other way to make a living. I never got rich, but I lived a comfortable life and was able to raise two exceptional children with my wife,” Raymond says. Though his career in law enforcement has come to a close, Raymond still works to promote public safety through teaching basic firearm and advanced handgun classes at Legendary Shooting Sports in Nash. “I have extensive experience as a firearm instructor,” Raymond says. “I started teaching when I was a police officer. I would see people mishandling their firearm and the hair on the back of my neck would stand up. I wanted to show them the right way, so I started as a firearm instructor for the police force. Even today I teach rifle and shotgun classes for local agencies.” Raymond’s level of comfort with a firearm came not only from his years in the Air Force, but also from his own childhood. When he was around eight or nine and had mastered the BB gun, his father showed him how to shoot a .22 and a .44. “It is important for people who want to own a firearm or who have one in their home to learn how to safely handle and use it,” Raymond says. “At the basic firearm classes we teach gun safety, gun handling, grip, stance, sight control, aiming, trigger control and competence. We educate on the

capabilities of the firearm and how to comfortably handle it for a while before we actually head to the range to ‘make noise.’ Most people fear a gun because they don’t understand them.” The basic firearm course also covers security of firearms for people who have young children around. One of Raymond’s biggest tips for securing a weapon that will be left out for security purposes is to secure a padlock on the pistol behind the trigger. Attach the key to the padlock on one of those bungee key rings that you can wear on your wrist. The gun cannot be fired until the lock is taken off. “Everyone who chooses to own a firearm needs to be fully competent and fully comfortable with one, starting with safety,” Raymond says. The advanced firearm class is meant for students who have been handling firearms for years and who want to become

Proud Veteran Raymond is proud of his service to our country. His trip to Washington DC for the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally in 2015 was something he had wanted to experience for many years. The event attracts approximately 900,000 participants and spectators. 020 ALT Magazine | November 2016

more competent and accurate. In the class, they set up golf balls on tees as targets or bowling pins, and Raymond helps teach them speed and accuracy. “My advice to anyone who is thinking about taking a class is to find an instructor that has experience and competency,” Raymond says. “Also, go to the class willing to learn. Don’t think that because you have always done things a certain way that there isn’t an opportunity to learn a safer or more efficient way. Plus, remember three things: safety, safety, safety. Never point a gun, loaded or unloaded, at anything you aren’t willing to destroy.” Raymond believes that people have three great reasons to own a firearm. The first is personal protection. “We have a limited number of peace officers, and response time, depending on where you are, can be anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes. However, a violent person can do a lot of damage in only five minutes. Plus, the average home burglary, from the time they kick in the door to the time they walk out, is usually under five minutes. Most of the time the crime is over before our officers can respond,” Raymond says. In today’s society, many question whether owning a gun for personal safety is a real answer to the violence they are seeing on the news. “Cain slew Abel with a rock. The Romans killed people with swords. People have been killing people long before guns were even invented. This is just the case of evil in

this world. When someone uses a weapon to harm someone, that makes the person bad, not the gun,” Raymond says. “The outlaws are not going to voluntarily give up their firearms, so the good guys should realize they can’t afford to either.” The other two reasons Raymond suggests owning a firearm are for hunting or sporting events with firearms, and finally, as a part of our second amendment right. “The current political attitude shows a fear of people owning firearms. I believe people should fear the government that fears firearm ownership,” Raymond says. “The second amendment was set up to prevent the control of a tyrannical government. Our forefathers had just fought against such a government and wanted us to have this right.” Even in retirement, Raymond continues to show concern for others through his work in these firearm classes. Whether he is training peace officers or civilians, Raymond wants to help others learn how to defend themselves safely and surpass their own anxieties. “I have always enjoyed teaching people to handle and shoot firearms. The firearms themselves are a tool,” Raymond says. “When I see a student who goes from not being able to hit a paper target at five yards away to clustering their shots where they want them, that is well worthwhile. I like to see people overcome their fear.”

As the holiday season approaches we often find ourselves reflecting on the important things that surround our lives, such as good health, a loving family, to having a successful career and a little extra time in our lives to indulge in all of these. Being thankful for what we have not only improves our outlook on life, it also keeps us balanced and healthy. We at Neighbors Emergency Center Texarkana are thankful to serve this incredible community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Texarkana is our home. We live every day with one purpose - to provide extraordinary emergency care that is dedicated to making lives better every day. What are you thankful for this year? We asked our staff to share with you what they are thankful for: “Neighbors gives me the opportunity to practice medicine again. It allows me to take time to get to know the patient, to sit down with them and have a meaningful conversation. So many times the initial concerns voiced by a patient in an emergency setting may only be the tip of the iceberg compared to their actual fears or frustrations. Neighbors was founded on the principle of listening to the patient; taking time to actually hear them and care for them, not only physically, but emotionally as well. At Neighbors, the focus is placed on doing what is right for the patient and their well-being. “The great patients we serve, as well as, the wonderful people I get to work with have made the emergency room a rewarding place to work again. I look forward to practicing medicine and seeing my Neighbors.” Dr. Shannon Spigener Medical Director - Neighbors Emergency Center Texarkana “I’m thankful to be working and treating patients at Neighbors because I have the opportunity to take extra time with my patients and get them feeling better quicker than I could in any other practice setting. Unlike anywhere I’ve ever worked before, this translates into happy patients and happy co-workers which makes every day at work a great day!” Dr. Jason Yost Physician - Neighbors Emergency Center Texarkana 11 Year Resident of Texarkana “I am so grateful to be working with such a wonderful team of people at Neighbors. CONTRACTOR REALTOR HUNTER The Thrill of the Hunt: Sportsman James Herrington Embraces Life in the Great Outdoors

M

any in the area remember their very first hunting trip as a rite of passage. Trekking through the keen morning air, honing in on an instinctual discernment waiting for nature to speak is an experience most never forget and continue to embrace for a lifetime. For Texarkana native, James Herrington, his first exposure to hunting came at an early age. “Every Thanksgiving and Christmas we made our way to see my cousins and grandmother in Palestine, Texas,” James says. “These trips almost always included a squirrel hunt or two on the old family land. I think I was only 3 or 4 years old when my dad first started taking me with him. On some of those early hunts, the thing I remember most is getting tired and dad carrying me on his back or shoulders for a little while.” Soon, he would graduate to having his very own tools of the sport. “I got my first .410 shotgun when I was around 7 or 8 and that got upgraded to a Sears .20 gauge as a Christmas present when I was 10.” Since then, he has been an avid outdoorsman, always ready and eager for his next trip in the open. James asserts that one of the most gratifying aspects of hunting is simply enjoying the outdoors and experiencing nature in a “hunter’s

way” without the distractions and impediments of the city. “Sitting quietly in the woods before first light, far away from city lights and the sound of traffic exposes you to things you can’t see any other way,” he says. Similar to the verse of a pastoral poet, he vividly describes the beauty, anticipation and tension felt along the journey of a hunt. “The hoot owl and turkey start talking well before daylight and sometimes the coyote makes his last howl just a few yards from your position. And don’t let anyone tell you they’re not just a bit nervous hearing the slow, but certain sound of something walking very close to you in the

crunchy, dry leaves of autumn. If you remembered your flashlight, you can confirm that it’s only an armadillo headed for home or an early rising squirrel in search of the first acorn drops.” Yet, along with the obvious thrill associated with the sport, James maintains that his motivations for hunting have progressively changed throughout the years. “Like many people that grew up hunting, the widely accepted ‘Six Stages of a Hunter’ fit me almost to a tee.” James describes these phases as the “shooting stage”, the “get-yourALT-Mag.com | November 2016 025

of whitetail deer, ducks and dove, he has also successfully hunted black bears, elk and mule deer over the course of his encounters. “Mix that in with wild hogs, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, quail and coyotes, and it makes for a pretty diverse bag.”

limit stage”, the “trophy stage”, the “method stage”, the “sportsman stage”, and lastly, the “give back stage”, each one of which his experience has allowed him to know intimately, though he finds sharing the love of the sport to others as most gratifying of the phases. “I’ve gone through every one of those. . . and now I find the real satisfaction for me comes from introducing others to the hunting experience. I can get really excited being part of a successful hunt for one of my kids or for someone who’s never been hunting before. I’ve harvested way more than my share of wild game and passing on the skillset to others is now far more satisfying than pulling the trigger myself.”

Additionally, James is also an avid fly fisherman. “From the time I was a teenager up until my late 30s, I spent a lot of time fishing for bass and crappie, and I started fly fishing for trout on the White River when I was still in high school.” While his teenage experiences make for fond memories, he admits he enjoys a slightly more leisurely pace within the sport today. “We’d make the 6 hour drive after school on Friday and sleep under a tarp on cots at the old KOA campground in Cotter, Arkansas. We waded and fished all weekend from daylight to dark and then we’d drive home in the dark Sunday night. A bit too fast paced for me now.” Nevertheless, he continues to embrace all forms of outdoor adventure. “I’m always thinking about and planning for that next fly fishing trip for rainbows and brown trout. There are so many great places to go that you couldn’t get around to all of them in a lifetime.”

Though the majority of his hunting has consisted

James has a notable list of gaming experiences to his credit. In addition to hunting and fishing in most of the Western States, he also had the opportunity to fly fish in the Patagonia region of Chili, in addition to several dove hunts in Cordoba, Argentina. “If you like wing shooting, you owe it to yourself to do Cordoba at least once in your lifetime. It’s an experience like no other and you will get in more shooting there in 3 days than most people do in a lifetime of dove hunting in the United States. The birds exist by the millions and are considered pests in that part of the world.” Throughout his travels, he is often accompanied by his friend and partner, Curt Green. “We’ve made countless trips together, including Cordoba and Patagonia and we always enjoy each other’s company.” About 10 years ago, the two friends bought a ranch together near Gillham, Arkansas, on a remote location situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. “We named it Rolling Fork Ranch after the river that forms its western boundary. It’s a real haven for deer, turkey and black bear. Not many people realize we have this kind of mountainous country so close to Texarkana.”

Through it all, James has always been sure to make hunting and fishing a family affair. His wife, Debbie, often joins him on his trips. Married during deer season, they have spent nearly every anniversary at deer camp or on a stand together for almost 39 years. “Even before Debbie and I got married, I persuaded her to go deer hunting with me in an elevated box stand (or “tower stand”),” he says. While Debbie had grown up camping with her family, she had never been exposed to hunting, though she soon developed a passion for the sport as well. “Her feet and toes got numb from the cold so I took her boots off and rubbed her feet till she got warm. We saw lots of deer in those days and in no time at all, she took my dad’s old Remington 30.06 and got her first two deer. They weren’t trophies by any stretch, but she was hooked.” One of James’s favorite memories involves a trip with his wife to Rolling Fork in 2006. He had just returned to his deer stand

Though couples often find it difficult to maintain their previous lifestyles when they become parents, James and Debbie found ways to alter their routine to include their three children, James II (34), Clint (28), and daughter, Haley (25). “After James II was born, things changed a bit, and when Clint came along a few years later, and then Haley, we had to adapt. We just bundled them up and took them with us and they’ve all spent opening morning of deer season curled up in a warm sleeping bag on the floor of a deer stand,” James says. “Family always came first with both of us and we are all very close today because we never left them behind during hunting season. They’ve always been a part of “deer camp” and got to experience the camaraderie and friendships that grow strong from sitting around a campfire together on a cold November night.” Though James looks forward to spending more time at Rolling Fork this fall, in addition to his annual fly fishing trips to Missouri and Colorado with Curt, he particularly cherishes the time he and his wife are able to spend with their children and grandchildren. The couple became grandparents a year and a half ago to granddaughter River Belle, the child of James II and his wife, Christi. The young family will soon welcome a baby boy in the spring.

when he heard her fire a single shot. The two then spent the next 3 hours attempting to track the deer down. “With dark closing fast, we located the biggest whitetail buck that either of us had ever seen anywhere in the woods, lying there on the ground in front of us. The buck had a massive 13 points, scored 172 Boone and Crocket and may well have been the largest deer killed that year in Arkansas by a woman.” The two have since nicknamed the trophy deer the “Anniversary Buck”. “He is prominently displayed on the wall at the ranch as a constant reminder for me and Curt that she holds the record that we are unlikely to ever break.”

Hunting and fishing has become an indelible part of the legacy he hopes to leave to the next generation, an inheritance that will perpetually restore itself. “Nothing is more important to me now than having the opportunity to spend time with the kids and grandchildren and exposing them to the outdoors and sportsman’s lifestyle. The knowledge acquired through hunting, harvesting and handling wild game from field to table is something that can’t be replaced with any other experience and builds self-sufficiency like nothing else. It’s a hobby and a lifestyle that has served me well and I can think of nothing else I’d trade it for.”

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Fuel Is Not Your Friend For a while now we have been using E85 fuel in our cars, trucks, and boats. If you can find some “regular” leaded fuel, good for you, but it’s hard to find and almost extinct. Using E85 in our cars and trucks is no big issue anymore, but in our boats and lawnmowers it is a problem. If you are not using a conditioner like Sea Foam or other brands to help keep lines and injectors clean, and keep moisture out of the tank, you may be heading toward a big problem. Fuel over time will absorb moisture and that leads to water in your tank which is not good. Also, E85 fuel will turn to varnish which will gum up your fuel lines and cause other issues like carbon buildup that will cost you money down the road. These problems can be eliminated by using products like Sea Foam every couple of tanks as it cleans out the lines and pistons varnish and carbon. If you are a fair weather fisherman or only use your small motors during hunting season, you really need to use a fuel stabilizer to get you through till the next season. There is nothing worse than getting to the lake and finding out your motor won’t start because of all the gunk in the lines and injectors. So consider this your reminder to take care of your outboard.

Cody and I met through mutual friends. We were instantly attracted to each other. I remember telling my dad, after Cody and I had been dating for just a couple of months, that he was the man I wanted to marry, he was the guy I was going to spend the rest of my life with. As most couples do, we went through our trials, but always managed to find our way back to each other. We knew we were meant for each other, that God created each of us specially for the other. We completed each other..... It was my 27th birthday, and Cody was taking me out to dinner to meet all of our close friends and his family at one of my favorite restaurants in Texarkana, Pop’s Place. I remember the moment so vividly…we had just finished eating supper, and the waiter brought around the bread pudding (my favorite part of the meal). Cody kept asking me to get up and take a birthday picture, I just wanted to get in one bite of pudding, he insisted I get up. When I walked over to pose for a pic, he whispered in my ear, I have one question to ask you. I think I blacked out for a second because the next thing I knew, he was down on one knee pulling a beautiful ring out of his pocket proposing. Right then and there, on my birthday of all days, he “popped” the question. Of course I said yes! I didn’t care too much about the bread pudding after that. Cody’s mom passed away a little over a year ago, she lost her battle with cancer. They were very close, and I know deep down, more than anything, he wanted her there. So we had a photo of the two of them along with a framed quote, “I know you would be here today if Heaven wasn’t so far away” on stage with us for the ceremony. She really was there with us, filling the room with her love. On a fun note, Cody is a huge Batman fan, all comics and superheroes really, but Batman is his favorite. He got all of his groomsmen and ushers super hero shirts to go under their tuxes and to wear at the reception. I even had a little surprise hidden as well. I had a half Wonder Woman half Batman garter made to go under my dress. It was something special and fun for us that made it our own. 048 ALT Magazine | November 2016

JODY HARRIS & ASHLEY BRADLEY

“Jody and I were sitting at the dinner table with our two children Dylan and McKenzye when he proposed. I could not imagine a more intimate proposal than having both our children present when he popped the question. It was the perfect day, the perfect moment and the perfect outcome for our family. Being part of a family means you are a part of something very special and wonderful. It means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life, no matter what. The love of our family will continue to flow strong and deep, leaving us all with memories that we will forever treasure and keep. Jody and I met back in 2005 during a traffic stop. Jody was a deputy sheriff for Miller County at the time. I was supposedly speeding, however Jody only gave me a warning. About a month later me and Jody ran into each other again. Jody was off duty and I was out with some friends. Before the night ended, we exchanged numbers. Jody and I now have two kids together, Dylan and McKenzye. The best part of my wedding was my son, Dylan, performing Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

CLIFTON PETTY & ALYSSA HUDSPETH

“We have known each other since middle school. Clifton proposed to me on my birthday, October 28. It was a perfect day that started with Clifton coming over and cooking breakfast (our favorite meal) for me. We spent the entire day together. Later in the day, Clifton asked if I would rather eat dinner or dessert first. I told him that, “Life is short…..Let’s eat dessert first.” He took me to a pie bar where I had one of my favorite kinds of pie. At sunset, Clifton drove me to Lake Ransom Canyon where a picnic dinner was waiting for us at a pavilion. He made sure to set it up with my favorite flowers and candles (I love candles). Before we even started eating, he got down on one knee. I immediately started crying. He opened a ring box containing a beautiful, antique, sapphire and diamond ring and asked me to marry him. I had always joked about him proposing with one of those Taco Bell hot sauce packets that said, “Will You Marry Me?” so….he also included one of those in the ring box. After a romantic dinner by candle light, we drove to an outdoor drive-in theater and watched a movie. It was the perfect day.”

WEDDING DRESS: Happily Ever After Bridal Boutique, Shreveport LA

Ethan and I met while both attending school at McLeod ISD. As long as I can remember we have been friends, which was easy since Ethan was the funny one in high school always keeping everyone laughing. My junior year of college our two best friends began dating. Eventually, the four of us started hanging out as a group on the weekends more and more. In August 2013, Ethan and I also started dating. It didn’t take long before I began to fall in love with the silly, class clown from high school that I had known for years. Not long after we officially began dating, Ethan was accepted into the Texas State Trooper Academy in Austin, Texas. He graduated in June 2014 and three short weeks later he was stationed in Seminole, Texas to begin his work as a State Trooper. Even though this was nine hours away from home, I chose to stay in Texarkana to finish my degree. We would take turns driving to see each other once a month but the majority of our communication was spent through face-time and on the phone. Even though the drive was long, it was always worth the two or three days we got to spend together. I graduated from Texas A&M University-Texarkana in December 2014 and during my graduation party, surrounded by our family and friends, Ethan proposed. Of course I said yes! Thankfully, in November 2015 Ethan finally received the call we had both been waiting for, he was coming home! His request was approved to begin work in Cass County effective November 2015. We would finally be able to live in the same town after almost 2 years of long distance. Our wedding day was May 1, 2016. Surrounded by God, family and friends, we said our vows and began the next chapter of our lives together. It was an absolutely perfect day filled with love. One of my favorite memories about our wedding was my bouquet. I chose to make a broach bouquet made out of beautiful broaches given to me by family members on both sides, some dating back to the early 1900’s. Each one has its own unique story. It is now in a beautiful vase displayed in our home as a symbol of our wedding day and all the wonderful people who helped make it so special! ALT-Mag.com | November 2016 067

Poor Credit History? There Are Ways to Recover In an ideal world, everyone could afford to pay cash for all items. Until that day arrives, establishing and maintaining good credit is important, because often we need credit to purchase high-priced items such as houses, cars and furniture. Maybe you had some tough times in the past and now you’re paying the price for a poor credit history. The good news is that there are things you can do to rebuild your credit, even if you can’t get a loan or conventional credit card. How a credit score works Credit scores are three-digit numbers, typically ranging from 300 to 850, that creditors use to rate your creditworthiness. Scores are based on how responsibly you’ve paid off loans in the past. The higher your score, the more likely you will obtain a loan with good terms, because you’ve proven there’s less risk that you will default. There are three major credit scoring bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. Each agency uses different algorithms to calculate credit scores, so each bureau’s score may differ. How to repair your credit One good option is to get a secured credit card, which

requires that you make a refundable deposit into an account as collateral. Usually your credit limit will be identical to how much you deposited. Although this is not ideal, it does allow you to open a credit account despite a poor credit history and, more importantly, rebuild your credit. Ideally you would pay the full balance off each month, though that’s not required. You must do two things if you want to rebuild your credit, though: Remit the required payment on time each month, and maintain a balance of no more than 30% of your credit limit. This balance-to-limit ratio is known as the utilization rate. To illustrate the utilization rate, let’s say you have a secured credit card with a limit of $1,000, because you have deposited $1,000 into the account. To keep the utilization rate below 30%, your balance should not exceed $300. As you repeatedly pay the bill on time and keep your utilization rate under 30%, your credit rating should increase. Many lenders will report your account activity to the credit bureaus, which can increase your credit score. Before you apply for a secured card, check if the issuer reports to the bureaus. The effects of bad credit Not only can a subpar credit score affect your ability to get mortgages and car loans, or get good terms on those loans, it can also affect other areas of your life: Insurance: Insurance companies routinely check credit reports in order to determine premiums for home and auto insurance. These premiums may be higher because of your payment history. Employment: Many employers perform a credit check as part of the hiring process. It’s a controversial practice, but advocates say these credit checks are an important indicator of maturity, discipline and trustworthiness. Housing: A low score can influence a landlord’s decision during the application process. Your credit report shows your monthly debts, and landlords review the report to see whether you could afford to pay rent. A bad credit score may not automatically exclude you from becoming a tenant, but delinquencies or accounts in collections may influence the decision. And if you owe money to another landlord, your chances of leasing the property are slim. The road back to good credit may seem long, and you certainly won’t complete it overnight, but by taking some solid steps you will begin to find your way.
