Everyone Deserves A More Beautiful, Balanced Life...

David Whitten, MD, PhD, FACEP

The Beauty & Wellness Center 903 . 831 . 5659

Our Vision at The Beauty & Wellness Center: The Beauty & Wellness Center exists to provide a place of refuge from life’s storms for our patients and customers- a place set apart that people can turn to for information, knowledge and self-improvement. We believe we can impart to our patients and customers something a lot more important than simply providing a cosmetic service. We want to be a resource for learning about life, health and balance. We believe anyone can breathe air until the end of their days, but that it takes a lot more to lead a balanced life, a beautiful life- a delightful life! We think a balanced life speaks to elements of physical, mental, emotional, relational and spiritual well-being. We believe that people can learn to be givers, instead of takers, and that they can learn to uphold and enhance those around them rather than to make oneself look better by tearing down or criticizing others. As children of God, we believe our behavior and attitude should always reflect joy and thanksgiving. We seek to project an attitude of thankfulness & a behavior that always attempts to lift up rather than tear down.

and amazing refreshments for the crowd. Regional Arts Center, 321 West Fourth Street. Admission is free; call (903) 792-6861 for more information. January 12 2013 Phantom Ball - On Saturday, January 12, 2013, we will celebrate our ninth annual Phantom Ball at Northridge Country Club. The proceeds of this event will benefit the client services of Temple Memorial Rehabilitation Center. This event will honor a very special member of our community as the “Phantom”. The criteria for “Phantom” is one who gives generously of their time and financial support to the Temple Center and the community of Texarkana Texas. In order to build suspense and intrigue for our event, the identity of this year’s honoree will not be revealed until the night of the Ball. In 1952, Dr. S.A. Collom and a gathering of Texarkana citizens founded the Temple Home for Crippled Children in response to the polio epidemic which was sweeping across our nation. Since that time, the Temple Center, an Easter Seals affiliate, has evolved and expanded into a premier facility providing physical, occupational and speech therapy for children and adults with disabilities. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the staff and Board of the Temple Center are committed to providing service to clients regardless of their ability to pay. We are asking you to join in our effort to raise funds for the children of the Temple Center. We hope that you will consider supporting this exciting event. The Texarkana Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is the only fully professional, 501(c)(3) performing arts organization dedicated to ensuring that the world’s great symphonic compositions are performed, heard, felt, understood, appreciated, valued, and expected in the Texarkana area. Founded by an inspired group of initial patrons, our first concert was presented on April 4, 2006, and was hailed by the community as a needed and powerful new resource for musical leadership. Within months the Junior League of Texarkana chose to award a $100,000, 80th Anniversary Gift, to the Symphony for its potential to foster educational excellence for children through local access to a professional music ensemble. This generous gift enabled the Symphony to immediately launch community outreach efforts, in-school educational programs, and student concerts. By the fall of 2007, the Symphony had founded the Texarkana Youth Symphony Orchestra (TYSO), the first auditioned student ensemble of its kind for the area. Following the phenomenal growth of the artistic endeavors of the Orchestra, the board of directors voted to employ a parttime executive director in the spring of 2008, and this position was made full-time in January 2011. Throughout the last six years, the Symphony has focused its performances around the presentation of a series of masterworks concerts, an annual Christmas family concert, and a Black History Month concert. In the fall of 2011, the TSO added a Creepy Classics Halloween concert that featured a side-by-side performance with our affiliate Youth Symphony. This Creepy Classics Concert was a culmination of a day of collaboration between the TSO, the Texarkana Regional Arts Council, Texarkana Museums System, Arts on Main, and Main Street Texarkana to present a Spooktacular

downtown street festival. December 2011 saw the repackaging of our Christmas family concert as Christmas at the Perot, featuring an ongoing collaboration between the TSO, the Texarkana Regional Chorale, and the Pleasant Grove Independent School District. The Symphony’s continued emphasis on educational excellence is achieved via initiatives which include: our affiliate youth orchestra, the Texarkana Youth Symphony Orchestra, which presents two concerts annually; a youth concerto competition for high school students, held each fall or winter; two annual student concerts in the Perot Theatre; and between 5-10 in-school educational presentations each year. The TSO is a resource to our community through various soloists and ensembles from both the TSO and TYSO who are often featured in social, civic, and church programs throughout the year. The TSO continues to become an integral part of Texarkana’s cultural tourism, and business recruitment and relocation initiatives. Since the TSO’s founding it has brought nationally and internationally acclaimed artists to our area to both perform and participate in educational activities. In April 2011, our first commissioned piece by the award winning composer, and Texarkana native Clint Needham, was premiered.

HandsOn Texarkana

Our Place in the World In August of 2009, the Wadley Foundation gifted the Texarkana Volunteer Center with the local, historic “Ben and Jane Collins Home” property on Olive Street in the heart of Texarkana. This new site provides the Volunteer Center and other non-profits a centrally located home base accessible to volunteers, clients and community leaders. “The Collins Building” brings many new opportunities for assembling the greatest network of concerned, caring people who desire to contribute to our Texarkana community and those who are in need. As a multifaceted complex, The Collins Building has a bright future as a functional meeting center providing a comfortable, welcoming environment for organizations and groups to host fundraisers, meetings and other festivities. Call us for information regarding reservations for your event. Knowing Our Path The Texarkana Volunteer Center was established in May 1969. The purpose of the Volunteer Center is making our community better through our advocacy of volunteerism. We believe it is a tool

to create positive change. The Center connects socially minded people to the community to solve serious issues. The Volunteer Center is governed by a 21-member board of directors, is a national partner with the 360 Affiliates of Points of Light Foundation/Hands On Network and serves both Arkansas and Texas, USA. In 2009 the board of directors decided to formally change our name to HandsOn Texarkana. Leading the Way Texarkana Volunteer Center continues to lead the way, and the result is more people having more opportunities to do what they do best - give back and connect their personal lives to the story of our community. Serving This Community The Texarkana Volunteer Center plays a vital role in the community providing programs that directly impact people who are looking for a new way to provide help and to receive help. JumpStart JumpStart for youth is designed to educate kids in completing and performing

community service required for school credit. Students attend an orientation taught by a member of the Volunteer Center’s board; thereby equipping them to go out into our community and assist non-profits with their mission. This program has served thousands of kids since its beginning in October 2000. The Skilled Parenting Skilled Parenting program teaches practical parenting skills while providing psychological support. Mothers and fathers learn the best ways to care for their children; how to control their temper -preventing any possible child abuse. Other skills addressed include proper care and nutrition during pregnancy, newborn and infant care, anger and frustration management as well as protecting and meeting the needs of their children. The Escort Program Escort Program transports senior citizens over the age of 60 to the doctor, grocery store, pharmacy and places of business through volunteers. Texarkana Community Resource Directory online at www.texarkanavolunteercenter.com provides valuable information on community resources, support groups and clubs. Many schools, hospitals, government agencies and community leaders use this as a valuable resource. It is available in hard copy and on line from our office. HandsOn Texarkana is a center for volunteers to gather, organize and share their efforts, energy and experience. As a clearinghouse for volunteers for other non-profits, one of the Volunteer Center’s main missions is to recruit and retain members of the community who have time, talent and a true desire to contribute.
