From the Publisher Normal.... Conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected. I am not sure I know what normal is anymore. The month of April has been anything but normal. The only thing I can say is that I am tired of whatever normal has been occurring the past four weeks and I am ready for some semblance of "normal" to return! I feel sure most of our readers would agree. My normal includes work (and yes, I tend to be a workaholic), and pleasure (I love to go places like the beach, eat out ,and shop when I am in the mood.) I have not had those "luxuries" in the past month. I miss them. The one thing that has been wonderful is that many families had a lot more time to spend with each other. Watching kids play, whether games inside the house or riding bikes and playing outside, the bond that comes with being together is something that is never forgotten. As a kid, we didn't have all of the indoor activities that are popular nowadays. There was no XBox, no iPad, no Netflix. There were woods behind our house, a chihuahua that loved to play chase, bicycles, skates, a hill we used to skate or bicycle down, a carport we used as a stop at the bottom. We explored,

built forts, and in general, had a blast. We made friends with the kids in the neighborhood. We knew everyone around us. When it was time to come in for supper, our moms would come out and "yell" for us. I know that in the near future, things will go back to our new "normal." When that happens, don't forget all the times you spent with your family. Many, I am sure, loved the time they had with you. May is a sad month for me. My mom passed away last year and I miss her. Although she and I had our moments, she

MOTHERHOOD STORIES

SHELBY AKIN Dog Mom (dog • mom) (n.) A forever play pal; the best cuddle buddy; a walking companion; best friend. Barry, an older Bicon/Poodle Mix found his forever play pal in his dog mom, Shelby DeMuth Akin. Shelby Akin is the Director of Marketing at Pleasant Grove ISD in Texarkana, Texas. A member of Junior League, Chi Omega Alumnae, Women for A&M Texarkana, and Williams Memorial Methodist Church, Shelby is married to Kyle Akin and together they share their love for their adopted fur baby, Barry. “Kyle and I adopted Barry in March 2020, from Passion for Pooches. We are both ‘dog people,’ but did not want to take on the responsibilities of training a small puppy. We had been discussing the right time to find a dog and decided to just let it happen. We saw Debbie Brower’s description on Facebook of a threeyear-old Bichon/Poodle mix who was house trained, loved to be held, and super sweet. We looked at each other and knew we had to meet him! We texted Debbie on Saturday evening and she responded Sunday morning inviting us over to meet him. She let us bring Barry home for a trial run that afternoon, which turned into a trial sleepover, and he never left. We can’t imagine life without Barry.” A favorite activity for Shelby and husband Kyle, is to gather with their neighbors and best friends, in their cul-de-sac. Their neighborhood dogs, Darlin and Belle, are a bit larger than Barry and he was aggressive and resistant to play with them in the beginning. However, as the time passed with more visits, Barry has warmed up to them both and seems friendlier towards them. Naturally, this made Shelby feel very proud as a dog mom, almost as if her and her husband had taught Barry social manners. Shelby has enjoyed many additional hours she does not normally have with Barry through the quarantine time related to the COVID-19 virus. She says, “This has been a perfect time for Barry and me to bond. Going back to my office will be a big adjustment for Barry (and me)!” 010

There is no doubt that Shelby loves her fur baby Barry, but her story does not begin there. Shelby has worked hard, traveled, contributed to her community, and forged solid friendships to last a lifetime. Recently celebrating her own wedding, Shelby describes her happiest moment when she reflects upon that day. “Kyle and I recently got married in Santa Rosa, California, in a vineyard with our immediate family. Having our families together in one of the prettiest parts of the country and marrying my best friend stands out as my happiest memory,” she says. Although the wedding was small with immediate family only, one of her most meaningful gifts ever received also came during this time. Right before Kyle and Shelby left for their wedding in California, Shelby’s three aunts on her father’s side of the family sent her “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” It was a handkerchief from her late Grandmother DeMuth with a sweet message sewn in blue, and her Grandma DeMuth’s pendant attached. Shelby explains, “I wrapped the handkerchief around my bridal bouquet, so I felt like I had a piece of my late DeMuth grandparents with me on my wedding day.” Shelby’s family was not the only one to surprise her with a sentimental gift. “My close friends wanted a way for me to know they were with me in spirit on my wedding day. My friend, Amelie, started a book of letters from my friends at my bachelorette party so that I had an individual message from all of them to read on my wedding day. Kyle gave it to me the night before our wedding. I felt so loved by my friends on the most special day of my life,” she says. Sonoma Country, California, definitely holds a special place in Shelby’s heart as her and Kyle exchanged vows in this extraordinary location. The two enjoyed a honeymoon following the wedding in Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai, Hawaii, which became her favorite spots because of the beautiful views, the company of her husband, and the memories she made. However, this does not conclude her list of the best places she has traveled. “I traveled to Italy last Spring with my friend, Amelie, as a fun spring break girls’ trip. We visited Florence, Vienna, and the Amalfi Coast.” Thinking ahead to future travel plans, Shelby wishes to travel with both her mother and her husband. “I’d love to take a few girls trips with my mom to Charleston, The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, and Palm Springs. A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

We need some sun and fun after this quarantine time! Kyle and I will make national and international travel a priority, too, after everything settles down. Italy and England are at the top of our list.” Shelby is most grateful as she describes her list of blessings, beginning with the first and most important one, “Without God, I know I am nothing. I am very blessed to come from a Christian family and to know and love Jesus.” Shelby continues her list of blessings mentioning her husband, her family and their guidance and leadership in her life, so many good friends, her fur baby, Barry, her freedom and the veterans that deserve praise and admiration for their heroic acts, her city, Texarkana, that fosters growth, education, fine arts, business, and creativity, and her work family, found at Pleasant Grove ISD. “The staff and students make it the best place to work in the state!” In fact, Shelby’s most proud contribution involves her work family. “With the help of Tiffany Beck, Linda Erie, and Deanna Flournoy, Pleasant Grove Middle School started a middle school drill team, the Star Steppers, five years ago, and I was able to co-direct and direct for three years. Between advising the Pleasant Grove Middle School Yearbook and working with the Star Steppers, I am so proud of the students in these organizations, what they produced, and the relationships we formed.”

A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

During Shelby’s college years, she had the honor of interning at L’Oréal in New York. There, her boss told her she was “very tenacious”. Shelby has held onto that compliment and considered her tenacity a strength. Her tenacity, indeed, has led her to being a wonderful dog mom, best friend, wife, and co-worker.

My Mom is: busy, caring, and a little high strung sometimes I really love it when my Mom: lets me get in her bed and rubs my belly My favorite thing I love to do with my Mom is: go see my grandmother and her dog, Austin. My mom always tells me: that I'm a good boy (except those few times I snuck out of the fence). I love my Mom because: she adopted me from Passion for Pooches when my first family couldn't keep me - and she feeds me a lot and gives me lots of treats.

MOTHERHOOD STORIES

KRISTI BENNETT Kristi Bennet holds two very important titles; a mother to Collin, Loren, Austin, and Joseph, and respected police sergeant for the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department. She is, in fact, a true hero. Kristi gave birth to Collin, who is now nine years old. Kristi says, “He is an unbelievable, smart, boy who is in the fourth grade at Genoa Elementary School. His favorite class is the Gifted and Talented class where he loves to work on projects and anything science related.” Kristi was blessed with three additional bonus children as well. “Loren has been a traveling missionary for over two years and is now settling into her new career with the Boy and Girls Club in the Dallas area. Austin, currently in the Navy as a corpsman, has spent time all over the world the last four years serving our county. Joseph, the marine, is currently working in administration for a hospital, obtaining his master’s degree this year, and residing his beautiful wife, Lily, who is in her final year of a rigorous physical therapy program. They have eight-year old Zoie, who is beautiful, a phenomenal baker, and a third-grade student at Redwater Elementary School.

on all this work! I try to step in and help, which I have discovered now, in the fourth week, is a bad idea. It is so hard! His teacher should make 356 million dollars, everyday! Seriously, all teachers are undervalued and underpaid,” she exclaims. “The extra time home though has been really nice to slow down and just be. We spend more time than ever now sitting on the porch, enjoying the spring flowers and sunshine, playing games after dark, and finding a movie on Disney+ before bed.”

As with many families in our area, experiencing this quarantine period has resulted in finding a new routine. “As a police officer, I do not get to stay home with Collin every day. I sure wish I was able to though. Collin, on the other hand, is a home body, so for him, he just loves it. He works on schoolwork, and thanks to Loren who is staying with us through this storm, she has made sure he has been successful 012

Kristi has done well to raise Collin throughout the years, and it shows in Collin’s very giving and selfless attitude. Kristi recalls an event at Harvest Texarkana that scared her for a moment, only to later realize that her son was showing love to others. “Collin and I were at Harvest Texarkana to assist with packing boxes of food with our PRIDE Youth Leadership group from Arkansas High School when the pandemic had just begun. Channel 12 news was there doing a story on the food shortage asking people to step up for their community. I turned around to see Collin being interviewed by the news channel. At first, I was a little worried as to what he would say, so I ran over to try to intervene a nine-year-old from saying something expectedly silly. Other than telling Collin we were going to Harvest Texarkana, I didn’t expect that he understood seriousness of the situation. The news channel guy asked Collin on camera, ‘Why do you think this is a good way to spend your day out of school?’ Collin answered all on his own, ‘I am blessed with so much; I want to do something for others.’” What a proud mom moment for Kristi when she experienced her son speak these kind words to the reporter! Collin, with the aid of Kristi’s mother, has given Kristi the most meaningful gift she has ever received in motherhood. She explains, “Recently, when Collin returned home from a week with my momma, he brought to me a small box that was very fancy. Inside that box contained small pieces of paper with a handwritten note on each one. His instructions were that every day, I open the box, and take out note one. Today’s informed me that I was in fact the best mom in the world.” Although this may seem like a small gift to many, it is very meaningful to Kristi; something she greatly appreciates. A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

Kristi has experienced a wonderful time raising Collin and enjoying her bonus children. “I work hard to make the very best life for me and my family. I try my best not to allow negativity to control or prevent the best that life has to offer. I am grateful to have a loving family whom I can count on to always have my back no matter what.” Certainly, this positive attitude can be attributed to the presence of her very own mother in Kristi’s life. “My mom is best person in the world. I am in awe of her patience and the love she shows all of us. I have never met more pure, selfless, soul who all of my life has only lived for others.”

My Mom is: my favorite I really love it when my Mom: makes me laugh My favorite thing I love to do with my Mom is: swing in the hammock outside and take naps My mom always tells me: she loves me I love my Mom because: she is sweet, honest, kind, playful

MOTHERHOOD STORIES

Armenia Hawkins “The best part of Armenia’s life is not just surviving, but thriving, with compassion, humor, style, generosity, and kindness.” These words were spoken to Armenia Hawkins, now age 62, at her retirement party in 2017, surrounded by those who had been personally inspired and blessed by Armenia. Armenia Doirnae Lester Hawkins is married to Pastor James Hawkins, and together, they have three sons and three grandchildren. James, their eldest, is 40 years old and retired from the United States Air Force. He blessed the Hawkins family with their first grandchild, Bethany, age 9. Brian Hawkins is their middle child. An Eagle Scout, and the proud owner of his own business, Hawkins Home Lawn Service, is 36 years old. And their final blessing in children, Kyle Hawkins, age 33, is also an Eagle Scout, and Physical Therapy Assistant. Kyle, and wife Ryan, made the Hawkins grandparents once again with Sophia (3) and Carter (1). Armenia remains very proud of her grandchildren as they grow and learn. A former teacher herself, with over 40 combined years of experience, Armenia has made sure to track her grandchildren’s daily progress and learning online via the Skype app during this quarantine process. “Bethany received an award at Ditton Lodge in London for designing the best Viking ship. This was posted on the school’s Facebook page. Bethany also practiced her piano lessons with Newmarket Music School virtually, and she received the confidence award. I was able to follow her progress on Twitter,” Armenia says. Although her remaining two grandchildren have not entered school yet, Armenia loves to keep up with them as well. “Sophia, age 3, with the help of her parents, Kyle and Ryan, was able to play hopscotch outside. This brought childhood memories to mind when my sisters and my friend used to draw with chalk outside. Little did I know, we were learning shapes! Sophia wanted me to read stories to her. In turn, she became the teacher and questioned me and praised me by saying, ‘Good job, Nana!’ I immediately thought, Sophia is going to be a fourth-generation teacher in our family!” Armenia is a third-generation teacher as her great-grandfather, Walsh Lester, began the education tradition in the Lester family in the 1880s. “He earned the first teaching certificate, and our family has a copy.” Another advantage of our modern-day technology the Hawkins family has enjoyed, surrounds their third grandchild, Carter, on his first 014

birthday. “Carter turner one year old on April 16th, and birthday parties are a big deal in our family. We had been planning his party since last April 16th. Well, we had a virtual Baby Shark party where everyone sent birthday videos and messages via email and everyone watched it on Carter’s first birthday. Technology has really helped us to stay

Being an experienced mother, Armenia has collected many memories over the past years. Her favorite mom moment is the day she became her sons’ english teacher in middle school. She says, “They were able to write and express feelings that amazed me! When I read their feelings about some of the things they learned as children, I thought to myself, ‘Hey, they are talking about me!’” Armenia recalls Mother’s Day each year as her husband, James, always sends three pink roses to her; one to represent each son. Next to Armenia’s wedding day, the births of each son and each grandchild is her absolute happiest memories of all times. Like other moms you will read about in this issue, Armenia is also a teacher, with a heart for her students, affectionately referred to as her children. She taught at Texarkana Independent School District for 28 years, and then retired from Pleasant Grove Independent School District after teaching for 12 years. Currently, she is a private Educational Consultant working for the Liberty-Eylau Independent School District. “The gift of everlasting friendship from a group of young ladies that I have had the delight to mentor has been one of the most meaningful gifts I have ever received,” she says. “At the end of my Retirement Party in 2017, Shelby DeMuth Akin, who had been my student teacher, told the staff I had been a blessing and inspiration to all who had been touched by my kindness and generosity. An educator, and friend, Laurie Gross, gave me a block of words spelling out ‘thankful’. She said the school district, the world, and everyone will be forever thankful because of Armenia Hawkins. These are by far, the best compliments anyone has ever paid me.” Armenia feels joyful in reflecting upon the children she taught, their parents, and how they are passing on her blessings and any nuggets of wisdom she shared. The ability of Armenia to make a successful impact during her 40 years of education is certainly a blessing indeed! Far beyond her children, her school children, and her husband of 42 years, Armenia’s list of blessings flows freely from a cup that runneth over. “I am grateful for the favor of God in my life and how He has shown me mercy throughout my life. God gave me ‘new lenses’ for life to be able to recognize His favor. He has also shown me favor with my health, life, and the love and support of A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

the St. John Baptist Church family where my husband pastors,” she says. Armenia appreciates the love and support of the extended Hawkins and Lester families, as well as her three close siblings and their spouses. “I am also so thankful for the love and support of all medical doctors, and staff, who help take care of our family’s overall health.” Rounding out her list of blessings is her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, a group of ladies that simply love Armenia. So how does a mother spend her time when her children have left home? Armenia’s love of the arts plays a role in her retired life. “The movie Beaches inspires me to be the friend to love. The art that inspires me the most is from an innocent, sincere, young, artist, Kamryn Brown, who drew me a picture on my birthday when she nine. I have a love for children, and it showed through her art how she respects and loves me. Kamryn actually featured my love of nature at a young age with the colors of the leaves and autumn scenery. I have the picture displayed in my guest bedroom!” Armenia finds the time to watch trees and leaves explode with changes in colors while spending time in nature, especially during the autumn seasons. Thinking forward to the future, Armenia is looking forward to seeing the completed building project of St. John Baptist Church in Texarkana, Texas. “I can clearly envision my husband, Pastor James Hawkins, preaching a sermon of faith, members praising the Lord, and myself spreading the good news to the children, as I always do during children’s hour,” she says. Finally, her most proud contribution in life, reflects in her ability to truly be herself. “Teaching not only to children in a school setting but being able to extend my love and creativity for children in the house of the Lord at St. John Baptist Church, I have found that I love whatever I do by just being myself. Perhaps that is what being a mom means after all.”

MOTHERHOOD STORIES

BROOKE MARSHALL There are two to wash, two to dry; there are two who argue; two who cry. There are two to kiss, two to hug; and best of all, there are two to love! This statement certainly rings true for twin mom, Brooke Marshall, a woman that is found to be loyal, compassionate, and very driven. Brooke is married to Todd Marshall, principal of Pleasant Grove High School. Together, they have twin boys, John and Luke Marshall, that are three years old. Born prematurely, only weighing 4.7 pounds and 2.13 pounds, they are now well above the average for their age. The boys enjoy books, flash cards, and playing outside. “When they are outside, you will find them around water and dirt. John never meets a stranger, while Luke is more reserved and takes it all in,” Brooke says. Being a twin mom is not the only thing that consumes Brooke’s time. She is also the Director of Marketing for Texarkana Emergency Center and co-owner of Lindsay Kate Designs. However, the past month has led to a change in Brooke’s daily plans and resulted in finding a new day to day routine. “We’ve really enjoyed spending time outside, playing, and doing arts and crafts. I think it’s good any time you can get extra family time. We miss the routine of going to Williams, but the boys have adapted well to being at home. Todd and I are both still working, so we have worked to be creative in keeping them busy,” she says.

018

Although Brooke’s twin boys are still very young, she is experiencing many favorite moments as they grow. One of her favorite ongoing moments is to see her twins daily loving and never meeting a stranger. They are, in fact, her world, and one of her top blessings in life. “I am most grateful for the health of my children today, especially because they were born prematurely.” Other blessings Brooke lists include her faith, the loving relationship with her grandparents, and her parent’s active participation in her twin boys’ lives. “My mom has been so selfless in helping to take care of my boys. Regardless of any situation, she is always willing to assist, step in, and help any way she can. This is a big stress relief for a working mom,” she says. “I am also thankful for my health and a job that I enjoy every day and allows me to feel like I am making a difference. I love living in a community that is a great place to raise a family and being a part of #hawknation.” All of these blessings are indeed something to be joyful for, but, deep down, Brooke is most proud of her husband and her children. A devoted wife, a mother full of snuggles and time to play outside with her boys, a woman that is trustworthy, loyal, and compassionate, is the true epitome of a God-fearing woman. Where does Brooke find her reassurance when less than desirable circumstances surround her? “The Bible. No matter the circumstance, good or bad, the reassurance that God loves me and is directing my steps is always comforting,” Brooke says. She has learned the Serenity Prayer as it has become her favorite throughout life. “God, grant

me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. A prayer that crosses many generations, it provides a positive state of mind where you are untroubled by life’s ups and downs. It reminds us to differentiate between things we can and cannot control. It teaches to make the best of what we have, where we are in life, to focus our time and energy on making real, positive changes and to remain humble. All of these qualities can be found in Brooke Marshall as a devoted mother, loving wife, humble friend, and determined employee and business owner.

MOTHERHOOD STORIES

LORI MUELLER A mother to two boys, wife to a local nurse practitioner, Craig Muller, and simply the best, and most encouraging person you could ever ask for, Lori Mueller finds joy in raising her tribe each day. However, Lori’s tribe extends beyond her two children as she describes her career as a kindergarten teacher at Pleasant Grove Independent School District. “This is my 12th year to teach; 11 of those in kindergarten, and one in pre-kindergarten my first year at Pleasant Grove. I previously taught kindergarten at Liberty-Eylau Primary School for six years.” Teaching is Lori’s second career. She spent time fighting the “teacher bug” as she refers to, and returned to school to complete her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University-Texarkana in December 2012. However, being a teacher is only one of three contributions in her life that she is most proud of. Ranking at the top, is also her role as a wife and a mother. “My husband is very thoughtful; he is always making homemade cards for me or just little notes when you least expect it.” One year for Mother’s Day, Craig, along with sons, Luke and Grady, decorated a mason jar and filled it with notes about things they liked or admired about Lori. She describes it as a “simple reminder about how much love we have to give”.

time, Lori gave birth to Grady, who is nearing 14, and in the eighth grade at Pleasant Grove Middle School. Lori says, “Both of my boys are active participants in the football program at Pleasant Grove, and Luke has played baseball for Pleasant Grove all four years of high school. Grady is active in Dixie Baseball.” Lori mentioned several things she is grateful for in her life. At the top of her list, God and her family. “They are there for me no matter what,” she exclaims. also thankful for her husband, both of their boys, and their dog. An additional blessing that some might find peculiar, is the extra time her family is experiencing during this quarantine season. “Like most parents, there have been some challenges, but considering the situation, it hasn’t been too bad. I consider myself lucky! Both of my boys are pretty independent, get up on their own most of the time, and they both do their own schoolwork! I have even looked at some of their work and I must admit, it is out of my league! However, there are days when I am so sad about the things my senior is missing out on, but then I am very grateful that we are getting to spend this extra time with him. We have enjoyed family meals each night, and the silly card games we have been playing. These are times I would not get with him if we were still in ‘normal times’. Both of my children are boys and they are taking this time way better than I would have at their age. They are pretty close, so this has been a great time for them to bond before Luke leaves for college!” Lori is also grateful for her friendships and treasures the times she gets to spend with lifelong friends. “One of the nicest things I do for myself is attending an annual trip with my girlfriends; I always come back refreshed and with a greater value on friendship too,” she says. As a mother and a teacher, Lori has felt most inspired by the movie, The Blind Side. “I cried almost the whole movie. I was in my second year of teaching when the movie came out and I could totally relate to Sandra Bullock’s role and wanting to take children home! It just reminded me of a student I had my first year and I just wanted to bring him home with me. I do not know where the child lives now, but he will be one I will never forget. The role she played as a mother; she would do anything to protect all of her children,” she says. A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

Aside from loving her family, teaching, and enjoying friendships, Lori also loves the mountains and traveling. “Craig and I traveled to Whitefish, Montana, and Banff, Canada, for our 20th anniversary! It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. We got to walk on top of a glacier, drank the purest water running in the crevices, and got to explore the Lake Louise area.” “I would love to travel London! Such amazing architecture and rich in history. I would love to get a glimpse of The Royal Family!” Lori offers excellent advice, and it happens to be the most loving thing she considers doing for another human. “Sometimes, it is as simple as just listening to one another; not talking, not trying to give advice, but just listening!”

Our Mom is: She is very caring, helpful, and funny. I really love it when our Mom: Cooks for us. Our favorite thing we love to do with our Mom is: Take our mom fishing, it is fun and funny to do! MOTHERHOOD STORIES

KERRI PRICE Kerri, a mortgage loan officer for Guaranty Bank and Trust, is married to David, and together they share a love for four children: Kelsi (27), Kaylee (22), Connor (19), and Madilyn (12). Kerri is also blessed with three grandchildren: Emma, Grayson and Reid. However, the blessing of children does not end there. “David and I could not have children of our own after years of trying and we both felt led by God to be foster parents as we both have a huge heart for children. We were licensed in January 2019, received our first placement in February 2019, and are praying to make him a forever part of our family. We have provided for three more placements since our first one, and currently still have a precious little girl we have had for a few months. We never knew how much being a foster family would bless our lives!” Being a foster-mom for Kerri has led her to feel that this is her greatest contribution as she says, “It takes a lot of sacrifice daily and some days are harder than others, but we pray through the hard days. Not all are called to do what we do and that’s just how God intended it. We all can play a role and we all have a calling that can help in some way though. I am honored to be able to be in these children lives for as long as they need me. They are my babies!” Kerri’s blessings extend much further than the ability to love on her foster children and provide a comforting home during their stay. “My Savior, Jesus Christ, is my number one blessing; not only do I have eternal peace knowing I will be with Him, but I also have the assurance to know that I am never alone in this world, He is with me and fighting for me, and always has been,” Kerri says. Madilyn her miracle baby, continues to bless Kerri every day, along with her husband, and her mother, which she refers to as her “rock over and over” throughout her life. “I also have the best extended family I could ask for; we are all there for each other when someone needs something.” Kerri’s extended family reaches far beyond blood relationships and into her foster mom community. “We are there for each other and we understand things in our lives 022

that others just cannot.” Continuing down her list of blessings, she speaks highly of our church family found at Heritage Church in Texarkana, Texas. “Heritage has been a huge blessing to my family; we were married by a Heritage preacher, my daughter was led to salvation there, we have a wonderful small group that we are loving spending time with, and we continue to be blessed by them in our foster care journey,” Kerri says. Rounding out her list, Kerri is so thankful that God has blessed her with good health. She is almost 40 years old and has never had any true health concerns. What a blessing, indeed! Kerri believes it is essential for mothers to take “me time”. She is a strong believer that you cannot pour from an empty cup and it is important to occasionally take the time to do something for yourself. A bubble bath, low lights, music, and a glass of wine, without any disruptions, allows Kerri to recharge, and fill up that “empty cup” so she can continue to pour wisdom into her children, grandchildren, and foster children. However, providing for the needs and desires of two children under the age of two, along with other family members, has not left Kerri with much disruptionfree time to recharge. Kerri also loves to find a relaxing spot on a beach. “We cruised to the Virgin Islands a couple of years ago! We got to see Saint Kitts, Saint Thomas, Saint Martin, Barbados, a small portion of Saint John and Saint Lucia; all of the islands are beautiful!! I want to go to Turks and Caicos! I am a huge beach lover and I have seen so many beautiful pictures of the beaches there.” Being a mother for Kerri has led to some of the happiest, loving, moving, and favorite moments of her life. Kerri reflects upon her happiest memory as a mother when she speaks of the day her daughter was born. “I had been trying to conceive for almost a year before I got pregnant with her and I think through my pregnancy, I still had fear in the back of my mind that my biggest dream of my whole life, to become a mom, might not happen, so the day she was born, my dream was realized!! Such a happy, happy day!” The most loving moment referring to Kerri’s motherhood came from her husband, David, and his selfless act of love. “My husband adopted my daughter! She was only three when A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

we got married; he loved her from day one, she was his from the beginning, and he was her daddy! He made it official in October 2017!” Not only has her husband demonstrated his love for Kerri and their daughter, but he has a knack for giving meaningful gifts to Kerri. She says, “One year for Christmas, my husband had my daughter right me a letter. It said, ‘Mom, I love you to the moon and back. Madi’, and he had it made into a necklace at Crocker’s Jewelers in her handwriting!! Precious!!” As memorable and endearing as these moments have been, each with their own special place in Kerri’s life, her favorite moment of being a mother came when her daughter accepted Jesus. “I knew then that no matter what else happens in life, I can know that she will go to heaven one day! Such an awesome feeling when your prayers are answered and the years of pouring into your child and taking them to church pay off with eternal blessings!” When looking inward, Kerri most values the honesty she has in herself. “I am a very honest person. I cannot lie, it is true. I learned that from my mama. My conscious is strong and it guides me each and every day.” This quality, admirable in itself, is most necessary for motherhood, marriage and community support. With multiple children residing in the same household during this quarantine season, Kerri was asked to elaborate on how their family had been coping with the new changes. “It has surprisingly not been as stressful for us as I have heard it has been for others. Not that there have not been some moments, but overall, I think it’s been nice to spend more time together. We eat more meals together and go outside together more than we have. David and I are working from home, so luckily the daycare is still open for the littles to go to so we can actually get things done. At times I think I have been busier with work since I have been home than I was in the office! Madilyn is in seventh grade at Red Lick School and she has been awesome! She stays on top of her work, gets it done with little complaining, and thankfully, has not needed my help much. I am not sure how great I would be as a teacher. Everyone seems to be doing really well. We try to get everyone out of the house, play outside, or go on walks as much as we can which helps us all feel better.” A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

From Madilyn My Mom is: beautiful I really love it when my Mom does: movie days with me on Christmas break My favorite thing I love to do with my Mom is: go shopping and get our nails done My mom always tells me: she loves me I love my Mom because: she makes sure I have everything I need and want and puts me and my siblings before herself. 023

MOTHERHOOD STORIES in 2003, her husband and her moved to Texarkana to open a business of their own. “Since then, Amigo Juan Mexican Restaurant has been our second home,” she says. Owning a business, especially in the restaurant industry, can be rigorous, exhausting, and challenging for sure. However, Maria is surrounded by her community and it shows. “The most loving thing someone has done has actually been through this unexpected time in our lives. I have seen the support and love many people of the community have shown me and our business. I have had neighbors, and people in our community send me and my family gifts to show they are thinking about us. They are very meaningful, and I am so thankful to everyone.”

MARIA RODRIGUEZ You wake up each morning weary, tired, not sure how you are going to get through another day. You anxiously reach for that cup of coffee. You struggle to get the kids and yourself out the door feeling a bit overwhelmed as to what awaits you at your business. As you approach your workplace and power up yourself, a voice inside you whispers, “Give me your day and I will give you my strength.” You take a deep breath, relinquish your heart, and the peace of God surpasses your soul. The pressures of work suddenly seem to subside. You are now waking up each morning with a new energy and perspective. “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Your new attitude of gratitude has determined your destiny of renewed strength. You are a working mom who does what she can and leaves the rest in the hands of your Master. Best of all, your husband and children are beneficiaries of your renewed energy and strength. These simple words describe a very fruitful, hardworking, and loving mother, found in Maria Rodriguez. Combing work and motherhood is no easy feat for any person. However, Maria has found a way to do both since 2003 and has become successful. Maria is a wife, business owner, and mother to three talented and loving children. “I am a proud mother of three children. My oldest, Erika, is a passionate and caring 24-year-old. She will be graduating with her master’s degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology from the University of Arkansas in May. Sergio is my middle child; he is 18 years old, bright, and incredibly athletic. He will be graduating from Pleasant Grove High School and attending the University of Arkansas in the fall. My youngest is Nicholas; he is in the sixth grade and is extremely lovable and spontaneous. My kids are each unique and are always keeping me on my toes.” Maria’s story began when her family moved from Mexico to the United States at the age of 17. She quickly began to learn about the restaurant business, and, 026

Certainly, with the quarantine season among us, Maria and her family have been forced to adjust everyday life. “The present circumstances have brought all kinds of feelings. My kids have all been understanding of our new routines. We have spent more time together whether it is for “lunchtime” at the restaurant or an evening just sitting around at home. It is not common for all of us to be home at once and be able to sit down for dinner or lunch together, so that has been one of the good things that have come through these hard times. My husband and I had to quickly figure out a new routine to manage the business, but also be able to help our youngest with his schoolwork. With my older kids, I know they have set their own time to focus on their assignments for the week, but it has been tough to know they don’t get to experience their lasts during this season of their lives. At the end of the day, it has been nice to feel that my house and heart are full because we are all together,” Maria says. Maria hails from a large family, one that loves to be surrounded by one another, pour out their love, and enjoy each other’s company. However, a normal Thanksgiving tradition of spending time with her family out of town, was changed one year; this event lead to one of her happiest memories. “During Thanksgiving, we usually spend it out of town surrounded by cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, way too many to count. However, one year it was mid-football season and we had to rethink our normal Thanksgiving tradition. It was

A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

a last-minute decision to stay at home and make our own Thanksgiving dinner for just us five. We had nothing at home, and I had no idea what we were going to do, but I knew we had to find a way to celebrate. Everyone was on board and before I knew it, I had a table full of Thanksgiving plates, and my kids around the table giving thanks. This was out of the ordinary for us, but I was happy because I felt that we had all come together to make this day special. I felt that each one was contributing to making it special and a way of showing how thankful we were of one another.” Maria thoroughly enjoys being a mother to Erika, Sergio, and Nicholas. She can recall many favorite

moments of being a mother and found it hard to narrow down to just one as she explains, “There are way too many proud ‘mom moments.’ I can say that because I cry too much when my kids make me proud. I think every time one of them shows me they are growing up, both physically and mentally, I am overwhelmed with emotions. Each of them has shown me their kindness and hard work in some way and I think that is what makes me happy to be a mom.” In fact, Maria’s greatest contribution in her life that she is most proud of, is the blessing of being a mother. “I am proud to be a mom and to be able to contribute to my kid’s lives each day.” Maria is respected among her children as a hardworking, dedicated, and courageous woman. She tries each day to be a better version of herself and show kindness in any way she can. Maria is, indeed, full of love for God; and in return, He has blessed her with her health, parents to love her, a supportive husband, friends, family, her home, and her work family. She is loyal to each person, a quality she values most in herself.

Our Mom is: a hard-working, dedicated, and courageous woman. She is full of love for God, family and people in her life. We really love it when our mom spoils us. It can be the smallest act of kindness, but we love it when she goes out of her way to do more for us. Our favorite thing to do with our mom is to make her laugh. Whether we are pranking each other or playing games, it's fun to see her be silly. Our mom always tells us to do our best and trust in God's plan. We love our mom because she is our role-model and has shown us, unconditional love.

MOTHERHOOD STORIES

IRENE STANFILL Irene Stanfill, a true southern girl at heart, wife to Quinn Stanfill, mother to Megan Stanfill Bates (22) and Connor Stanfill (18), and supporter of all things football, truly knows the experience of joy in motherhood. However, Megan and Connor are not Irene and Quinn’s biological children. Through the blessing of God, the willingness of the Stanfill’s to do His will, and a bit of time, Irene and Quinn adopted both of their children at their birth. In fact, one would be hard pressed to argue that giving birth is the only way to make Irene a mother; no, it is the love in her heart that makes her the perfect mother. Irene knew from a young age that she wanted to either foster children or adopt them when she grew up. “My family had a foster child for quite a few years. That little girl changed our world and made us better people. Quinn and I spoke of adopting before we were married, and both knew that was something we felt led by God to do. After seven years of the ups and downs of fertility treatment and no explanation of why we were not conceiving, we prayed and felt that God was leading us to adoption. We worked with Volunteers of America in New Orleans and within eight months were matched with a young birth mom. Four months later, we brought home the most beautiful baby girl for an early Christmas present. Four years later, and after a move to north Louisiana, God put us in contact with a church member that was an adoption attorney. Within two months we were blessed with our second child; a very healthy and beautiful 10-pound boy.” As joyful as motherhood is, it also has its challenging moments, especially when it changes family dynamics due to quarantine procedures being implemented. So, how does Irene cope during this difficult time? “At first, I had to wrap my head around what life was about to look like not only for us, but for my mother as well. I am the primary caregiver of my 80-year-old mom, and of course worried about her. One day, soon after the Shelter-inPlace order was announced, and I began to realize going back to school was not looking very positive; I was pretty down. My son is a senior at Pleasant Grove High School, and I realized he would probably not be able to attend his football banquet to receive his State Championship Football Ring. He also would not be recognized for his excellent academic achievement which meant the Top 028

20% Academic Banquet would be postponed, followed by prom and graduation looking less and less likely to happen. On Thursday, April 2, in my prayer time, God told me not to worry, but be thankful. Be thankful for the extra minutes, hours, days, and weeks with Connor before he goes off to college. Be thankful for the opportunities you have to talk, text, and FaceTime Megan, who lives in north Little Rock, with husband, Noah, be thankful for the bonus family dinners, neighborhood walks, and the Sunday morning worship at the breakfast table.” Irene went on to describe the changes presented in their actual home as she says, “The only difficult thing is managing time. My husband is the worship pastor at First Baptist Church Texarkana, and lost his office due to a recent fire, so he is working from home. I am trying to get my lessons done for my students, make sure Connor has his work done, and like everyone else, the never-ending cooking and cleaning. I asked Connor one day to be honest with me about his feelings, and his reply was simple as he said, ‘It does no good to be upset, mad, or frustrated with something we cannot change or control.’ He did say he misses school, his team and his lunch bunch and wants to go back to school at least to have some sort of closure.” That is one sentiment that many seniors in our town are wishing for daily. As for her daughter, Megan, she remains busy with settling into her new role as wife and adjusting to her new home and town. Megan’s husband, Noah, is home working as well, which allows them to spend more time together than they would have otherwise. Irene’s favorite moments during her motherhood are found with Megan and Conner. Recently, she had the privilege of planning Megan’s wedding with her as they spoke in depth about her future with her new husband. Irene reflects on the times Megan went back to her childhood and their family values and voiced her desire to pass on those same values to her children. Also, conversations with her son, Conner, and his future race to the front of the line as a favorite mom moment. “It is rewarding and heartwarming to step back and watch your children become young adults and bloom. I have prayed many verses over my children, but lately claiming the verse found in Proverbs 22:6 that says, ‘Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is older, he will not depart.’” Knowing both of her children prayed, and asked Jesus to be their Lord and Savior is definitely Irene’s happiest moments of motherhood. Irene has multiple things to be thankful for; many of which surround her daily. She feels blessed to have joined her husband, Quinn, in marriage nearly 29 years ago. “Quinn loves the Lord, me, and our children unconditionally,” Irene says. She is thankful for both of A LT M a g a z i n e | M a y 2 0 2 0

her children, and that she has lived to see them grow and enter into young adulthood. Her family, as well as church family, continue the list as she reflects on one of the most loving things someone has done for her. “Quite a few years ago, my appendix ruptured, and I became septic. I spent 16 days in the hospital. My Life Group from my church cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and made sure my family was taken care of.” Irene is thankful for her health, friends, home, and many things that make her part of the Pleasant Grove ISD Family. A sixth-grade math teacher at Pleasant Grove Middle School, teaching for a total of 29 years, and the corporate sponsor coordinator for Pleasant Grove Athletic Booster Club, Irene is thankful to be a “Grove Mom”, and the friends she has within that tribe. “My reputation as a teacher in the Pleasant Grove community is something I am most proud of. I think the parents know that I really love their children first and foremost. I believe my district knows that I have a high standard of excellence and a drive to be the best, and that I encourage my students to be the best students in the state.” Looking to the future, Irene would like to experience the birth of a grandchild with daughter Megan and her husband, Noah. She is also looking forward to seeing Conner play football at the University of Louisiana – Monroe, spending as much time with Quinn as possible, and being sure to hug her people and tell them how much she loves them and how proud she is of each of person.

Zachariah and Brionna Kelley February 2, 2020

It was special because, February 2nd, fifty plus years ago, my (Brionna’s) grandparents got married. Zach knows how close I am to them so he was all for having our wedding on that date. The date itself is special, but the day turned out so beautiful, after such a rainy week. We were a little worried, but the weather turned out beautiful and sunny. Most family and friends were able to come even from out of town and we did a live video for the ones who couldn’t attend. Everything turned out better than we could have imagined! 034

Our Story...

We met online and our first date was at Texas Roadhouse. We had talked for so long; we were the only ones left in there and they were trying to close. We didn’t realize until it was past closing time. Easter of 2018, our families met and they blended so perfectly. He proposed on June 1, 2019, at the restaurant, Verona. The staff knew about it. There was family there and friends that surprised me afterwards. It was literally how I dreamed it would happen and we started planning right away. We already had the date picked that we wanted. Then on the 4th of July, 2019, we found out we were pregnant with our first baby, a boy, Levi Alexander, that was due March 3, 2020, but born two months early. He is home, healthy and our little warrior. We are blessed.

Our Story... Hunt and I met through a dating app while I was finishing Physical Therapy school. We started dating two years before he proposed. I was out in Arizona for my last clinical rotation for school and I flew out to visit him on a long weekend. He took me to an overlook at MillWood Park and got down on one knee. I was caught completely off guard! After I graduated, I moved to Texarkana and we have been living here happily ever after. 036

The CARES Act: Relief for Small Business Owners

Small businesses impacted by the pandemic and economic downturn have a new resource for payroll and other expenses. Passed on March 27, 2020, the CARES Act provides an estimated $2 trillion in fiscal stimulus to combat the economic impact of COVID-19, including specific support in the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) for small businesses to cover expenses such as payroll costs through June 30, 2020. The PPP is a partially forgivable loan program offered through the Small Business Administration (SBA).

When Markets Are Down, What Should You Do About RMDs? RETIREMENT AND LONGEVITY • March 25, 2020 • Keep these strategies and considerations in mind.

To ensure that tax liabilities aren’t deferred indefinitely, investors are obligated by the IRS to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from most retirement accounts. For those born after June 30, 1949, RMDs begin at age 72; for those born earlier, RMDs begin at age 70½. Volatile markets add a layer of complexity to taking these distributions, however. As the RMD amount is determined by the retirement account’s value at prior year-end as well as your life expectancy, a quick downturn in the stock market at the beginning of the year can cause a lot of stress for individuals who are then required to take a distribution – and who face a steep 50% penalty if they don’t. It’s not a simple topic. However, there are a few considerations and strategies to bear in mind when thinking about your RMDs amid volatile market conditions. Update: The CARES Act coronavirus response plan (passed March 27) includes a provision that there are no required minimum distributions in 2020. Please consult your tax professional and financial advisor for additional guidance.

CARES Act: Rebates, Health Coverage, Homeownership and More FAMILY AND LIFE EVENTS • March 31, 2020 • Review provisions that include recovery rebates, expansion of qualified HSA uses and tenant protection. Passed on March 27, 2020, the CARES Act provides an estimated $2 trillion in fiscal stimulus to combat the economic impact of COVID-19 and provides the healthcare industry the financial support, equipment and protection it needs to combat the virus. On the next page, review some of the major provisions in the CARES Act aimed at providing relief to individuals.

financial focus

Recovery rebates The act provides payments to taxpayers (subject to income limits) in the way of a credit of $1,200 per individual and $2,400 per married couple filing jointly. There is also a $500 credit per qualifying child under the age of 17. The payment is reduced by 5% of the individual’s adjusted gross income over $75,000 ($112,500 for head of household; $150,000 for joint filers). The payment will fully phase out when income reaches $99,000 for single filers, $146,500 for head of households with one child and $198,000 for joint filers. Individuals who have no income, as well as those whose income comes from non-taxable sources, also qualify for the advance payment. The eligibility for the payment is based on the taxpayer’s 2019 tax return. If the return has not been filed, eligibility is based off of the 2018 tax return. For most Americans, the credit will arrive in April 2020 through direct deposit, while others may receive a check in the mail. Expansion of health coverage Under the CARES Act, over-the-counter (OTC) medications and menstrual care products will now be considered qualified medical expenses for medical savings accounts such as health savings accounts (HSAs), Archer medical savings accounts (MSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs). In the past, OTC medicines required a prescription to be an eligible expense. HSAs will now cover telehealth and remote care services pre-deductible for plan years that begin on or before December 31, 2021. Generally, HSAs would only cover preventive care before the deductible is met but cannot pay for non-preventive services until the deductible has been met. If or when a COVID-19 vaccine comes available, it will be free to those on Medicare. Medicare Part D recipients must be given the ability to have a 90-day supply of medication prescribed and filled during the COVID-19 emergency period. Forbearance of mortgage payments If your mortgage is backed by the federal government, this provision allows you to suspend payments for up to 12 months (initial 180 days with an option to extend an additional 180 days). To request forbearance on your federally backed mortgage, contact your mortgage company. You must affirm that you are experiencing hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic. No further documentation is required. You may halt the forbearance at any time. During any forbearance period, you may not be charged penalties, interests or fees that would not have been charged if you had made your payments on time and in full. Additionally, you will not be reported to credit bureaus for late or missed payments provided you are in a forbearance program. This applies through July 25, 2020, or 120 days after the end of the emergency program, whichever is later. Tenant protection The CARES Act provides important protections for tenants during the coronavirus outbreak. It places a federal moratorium on eviction of tenants for non-payment of rent while also prohibiting landlords from charging fees, penalties or other charges to the tenant related to nonpayment of rent. Furthermore, landlords may not evict a tenant after the moratorium expires except on 30-days’ notice. The moratorium on evictions went into effect on March 27, 2020, and lasts for 120 days. The federal moratorium pertains to “covered dwellings” or rental properties that receive any federal assistance, which include: • Dwellings that participate in the Covered Housing Program of the Violence Against Women Act • Dwellings that participate in the Rural Housing Voucher Program • Dwellings that have a federally backed mortgage loan • Dwellings that have a federally backed multi-family mortgage loan Landlords should know or have access to whether their properties would fall under one of these categories. Many states and municipalities are also imposing their own restrictions. If those moratoria are less strict, the federal moratorium would apply. Relief for student loan borrowers There are a lot of provisions for individuals affected by COVID-19, including financial aid repayments, work study grants, temporary relief for student loan borrowers, exclusions of federal direct loans and Pell Grants for student who can’t complete the semester due to qualifying emergency, and modification of institutional grants. Required payments on federal student loans have been suspended through September 30, 2020. During this time, no interest will accrue on this debt. Note while required payments are suspended, voluntary payments are not prohibited. Unfortunately, that means automatic payments will continue unless individuals take proactive measures to contact their loan provider and pause payments. Over the next six months, borrowers will still have the opportunity to continue paying down the principal on their loans, should they choose to do so. The Department of Education has already set federal student loan interest rates at 0% for a 60-day period beginning March 20, 2020. Some other considerations for student loan borrowers include: • If you can continue to pay student debt, it might make sense to take advantage of the 0% rate. • Use the funds you would have applied toward the student loan to pay down high interest debt, such as credit cards. • Save the payments you would have made to create or replenish an emergency savings account. Ideally, an emergency fund will cover three to six months of expenses. • Employers may provide a student loan repayment benefit to employees on a tax-free basis. The provision applies to any student loan payments made by an employer on behalf of an employee after date of enactment and before January 1, 2021. If this applies to you, take advantage of the tax-free payment.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Canceled, Not Canceled Well, it appears that pretty much all bass tournaments have been postponed or canceled this spring and summer. If we are not careful, our families will get used to us being home and expect us to do more around the house; projects, things like paint, garden, wash cars, and other household tasks. Don’t fall into the trap! Get a few buddies together and put twenty bucks in a pot for a big bass, or take some of your “stash” and pretend you have a tournament and bring home $100 and say you won an hourly or got 8th place or something. See, fishing is more fun than painting the house, and much like a habit, if you are around too much it becomes the new norm. You don’t want to interrupt the routine you have developed over years, like mowing the yard on a Wednesday night, using the mowers headlights, or paying the kid next door to wash your wife’s car after you just get back from fishing and she thinks you did it. Stay at home too much and the next thing you know, they get use to you being around and then you get a “look” when you think about a new boat and hear a comment like, “Why do you need a new boat? You didn’t fish enough last year to need one.” Or, “What do you need ten rods for when you can’t fish due to the coronavirus?” Do yourself a favor, and keep up the routine of fishing a tournament, even if you don’t have one to fish. It keeps the routine normal. Editor's note: He will NOT be getting a new boat because he hasn't used the one he has enough in the past year. However, he may get a new fly fishing rod, which is much less expensive than a new boat and I enjoy the places we travel to for him to fly fish!
