If not for my mom’s encouragement, I would never have been able to do the things I have done in my life.
Spring is here and I love it! It means green grass, flowers, leaves on the trees – and of course, Mother’s day! My Mom has been a great influence in my life. She has always told me that I can do anything I put my mind to! And I believed her! Not only did she encourage me to be my best where my education was concerned, but she also encouraged creativity. When I was 6 years old, our family purchased a piano – mainly for my sister because she had decided she wanted it. However, I was the one who ended up sticking with it. For 9 years, I practiced religiously. It’s sad that as you get older, you just don’t have the time to dedicate to the arts like you did when you were young. Or maybe you don’t have a mom pushing you to practice and be your best. I practiced a lot. From the time I got home from school, until late in the evening, you could find me at the piano. Mom is especially fond of
telling the story that the piano was where you could find me any time work needed to be done – such as washing dishes, cleaning my room, helping in the garden – you name it, if it meant work, it was time for me to practice! She had my number! But she never made me stop. She loved it as much as I did. My love for artistic thing grew and as a senior in high school, on a whim, I decided to take the art class. I absolutely loved it! I loved painting, drawing, sketching – anything to do with the creative things that “art class” would allow me to do. I loved it so much that of all the awards given, the one I hoped for, and received, was the Art Award! If not for my mom’s encouragement, I would never have been able to do the things I have done in my life. Now, my creativity involves a computer, and several creative programs. It has transformed through the years. Maybe one day I will have time to take a class from one of our feature subjects this month, Jeannie Edwards. Her talent amazes me and I would love that. Maybe one day… Until then, I will be happy being creative with all that I do nowadays. I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day and honor and love your mom! May God bless you…

FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL MOTHERS THE MORE I GROW, THE MORE I REALIZE THAT MY MOM IS THE BEST FRIEND I EVER HAD. EDITOR : A M Y JONES As I was driving to work this morning, I saw two middle school kids walking in the pouring down rain. No umbrella, no rain jacket, just a soaked hoodie. My first thought was “Where is their mother?” It made me really angry, so of course I called my mom. In that moment and many other moments, I realized that I have been extremely lucky to have a mom who cares about me so much. Mom, You are the most selfless person I know. You are a role model to me. Not only are you a wonderful mom , but you are truly the heart of our family. I would just like to take a moment and tell you thank you for all you do and everything you have done! I don’t tell you enough. I hope you have the best Mother’s Day and know that I love you more than words could ever describe.

One of my favorite funny stories about my mom, Debbie Brower, actually involves this magazine! Years ago when the magazine was run out of her home and it was just me, Mom, and my sister, Miranda, I remember being really, horribly sick… Violent regurgitation, if you will… But, nothing stops the presses or ALT from getting out on time. EVER. We still joke about how I was literally throwing up in a bowl beside my bed as Mom was bringing me pages to proofread, as well as the other sick necessities. (In that loving, motherly tone…) “You need a sprite? Or some soup? Crackers? Anything I can do? No? Ok, keep proofing! We’re almost done!” haha. I attribute my work ethic to my mother. You will never meet someone who is more hard working or determined. I actually attribute many of my traits to her. We share a strong passion for animals and helping the less fortunate and those in need, and I don’t think I ever would have thought about volunteering in the way I do now if I hadn’t seen my mother “put her money (and actions) where her mouth is.” When Mom has a complaint about something she puts her feet to the ground and does something about it. The older I get, the more I realize how extremely lucky I am to not only have a mother who is truly one of my best friends, but someone I can look up to and strive to be like, someone I have known would always love and support me no matter what, a best friend to laugh with and occasionally a shoulder to cry on. If I turn out to be half the person my mom, Debbie Brower, is I will consider myself lucky. Hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day, Mom! You deserve it!
I believe God chose Amy Huddleston to be my mother for so many reasons. Our relationship has always been raw and most importantly, REAL. She is not without her flaws but she always tried her best to raise me and my sister, and she always put us first. Mom was old school. Bad grades weren’t an option, and graduating from college wasn’t a choice. When we were kids, there was no such thing as acting out in public or disrespecting adults (This form of parenting, I believe, is a lost art). I can honestly say I always knew in my heart how much she loved us, and I always knew we were her whole world. Never did I doubt that. My mother had a knack for always being right. Sometimes I would head her advice, and sometimes I would do exactly the opposite, which always resulted in me learning a very valuable lesson the hard way. Every time I challenged her wisdom, I regretted it. I hated that… But I do know this: Because of her I learned how hard things can get, and how good things can be. I learned to focus on my creator, not my critics (HE is the judge and the jury). I learned I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I learned where choosing the wrong circle and trusting the wrong people can get you. I learned what friendship is and isn’t. I learned to appreciate a good and faithful husband. I learned where to find strength and I learned where God’s plan can lead you (despite your own intentions). I don’t know it all, but I know enough. For that, for my mother, I am thankful. Love you mom, and Happy Mother’s Day! 010 ALT Magazine | May 2016

Shine Bright AUTHOR: ANNE FRUGE GRANADO PHOTOGRAPHY: STUDIO 5A
Have you ever heard of a nine year old hip-hop dancing, baseball playing, deer hunting, all ‘A’ student who loves to paint and thinks his parents are “awesome”? If you ever have the pleasure of meeting the smiling and wellspoken Easton Bright, you will know why most people, especially his loving family, believe that Easton should be a on a national talent show. This extraordinary young man is breaking all the conventions and constraints of childhood, pursuing his various passions with determination to get better and also to “just have fun with it.” His star power is only highlighted by his humble spirit and down-to-earth manner.
SHINE
WITH OVER 5,500 HITS ON YOUTUBE, EASTON BRIGHT IS KILLIN’ IT.
Guided by his supportive parents, James and Emily Bright, Easton is polite and mature beyond his years, answering “Yes ma’am” or “Yes, sir” to every question about his awards, his favorite dancers, and his love for all kinds of music, even Frank Sinatra. “When I hear music it makes my heart pound and I have to move to it,” Easton says. James Bright, a heavy mobile equipment operator at DLA, was raised in New Boston, Texas. Emily, the human resources manager at Abernathy Company, was raised in Texarkana, Texas. The two met through mutual friends after high school.

TOUCH On their first date, James took Emily to her first casino, where with only $15, Emily won a $400 jackpot. Years later, James returned to the scene of where it all began and proposed. Emily even had “Jackpot” engraved on his ring. The two were both very active in softball and baseball growing up and were both recognized as most valuable players in high school. So, when they found out they were having a baby boy, they could not wait till the day they could put a baseball in his hand. However, neither were prepared for the other talents that Easton would quickly develop. “When Easton was just 2 years old, if any music was playing, he would begin to dance like no other 2 year old you have ever seen. We immediately saw the talent; he

could not stay still if music was on,” Emily says. “He was pretty quiet as a child but has always been very intelligent. We constantly received compliments on his good behavior and how mature he was for his age. As time went on and the more he danced in front of friends and family, everyone would comment, ‘You need to get him on the Ellen show.’ We really didn’t think much of it; being our own child, we honestly thought he was just a cute kid and moved a little better than most his age.” When Easton was five years old, Emily and James began to realize how talented their son was. His hiphop, free-style dance at the Redlick Talent Show was a huge hit, and the video now has over 5500 hits on Youtube (please Google ‘Easton Bright Dancing Talent Show’ so that you can see Easton in action). “I wanted to do the show, and I was just dancing around the living room, so my mom helped me make up a dance,” Easton says. “Well, dad helped a little bit! I was only five we saw in Justin Bieber videos or other

Shine Bright videos online. I love to watch freestyle or breakdancing videos.” At this point, Easton had not had any formal dance training. He was already involved in baseball through the Texarkana Arkansas Baseball Association, where James proudly coaches the team. Last year Easton was chosen to play on the All-Star baseball team for his age division. Easton also loves to deer hunt with his mom and dad. He killed his first deer when he was 7 years old in Canfield, Arkansas. “Easton has always been a quick learner, and he gets that from his mother,” James says. “He learns from everything. Even with hunting, I would show him something, and two minutes later, he’s got it.” After the talent show, and a gig as entertainment for a pageant in Dekalb, Easton attended an event at the skating rink where he free styled in the middle of the floor and was asked to be an opener for the OMG girls in March 2013 at their Texarkana concert at the convention center. Easton loved being on stage. “I love hip-hop style and freestyle the most because it’s just about having fun and doing your own thing,” Easton says. “You get to get loose and use your own style. It’s more free.”
After these local events, Easton became a sought-after entertainer. “We’ve learned that you never know who is watching. After the first event Easton attended as entertainment, other calls or messages just started coming through,” Emily says. Two years in a row Easton has been entertainment at the Spring Pep-Rally for Texas High, which has been one of his favorites to attend. Those kids really encourage him and are very enthusiastic when they see him. “Each time he was asked to dance at different events, he was very excited. The bigger the crowd, the better,” James says. The Brights had a music mix made and asked Joni’s Dance Studio to allow him to practice; however, Easton was also encouraged to enroll there. The next year, he began to attend dance there under an instructor. “His interest grew more through the encouragement he received after each performance,” Emily says.
“No one in my family or James family grew up in dance. This is an entire new world to us that we are still learning. Each year we learn something new about the industry, but we’re doing our best to become experts!” While enrolled at Joni’s studio, Easton was encouraged by another boy in his class to begin taking classes in all styles of dance.
EASTON’S COMPETITION ROUTINE FOR THIS YEAR COMBINES “CLASSIC MAN” BY JIDENA AND SOME FRANK SINATRA. 016 ALT Magazine | May 2016
Shine Bright Easton began to study ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical and hip-hop; however, he would be quick to tell you that his favorites are still hip-hop and lyrical/contemporary. Easton is currently a dance student at BC Dance under the tutelage of Bethany Cox. Even at a young age, Easton has had to overcome some stereotypes of males in the dance world. However, Easton has met many other male dancers through experiences traveling around the country. In other regions, pursuing these passions is not such an anomaly. Easton hopes that his story encourages other boys to “try out” dance classes. “We have learned that the dance world, is not like any other sport. We have learned that if this is what he wants to pursue then we have to be knowledgeable and stay up to date with the dance industry,” Emily says. “Though we’ve had a few experiences in the past where Easton felt left out as the only boy in the class, we are a part of a family at BC Dance. They never forget Easton, even though he is the only boy, I watch them at every competition help each other with their girls, prepare lunch for the whole studio if there is no time to leave, and pull together when we need last minute items. The parents there do an awesome, awesome job of keeping Easton involved and supporting him.” Easton has also worked with Jason Page out of Little Rock and Todd Flanagan from Genoa who currently works all across the country. Easton likes learning from all different people, and the family travels many weekends to conventions and competitions out of town in places like Dallas, TX; Hot Springs, AR; St. Louis, MO; Biloxi, MS; and Panama, FL. “There’s not a lot of knowledge about hip-hop dance styles
in this area,” James says, “When people hear hip-hop, they think ‘cheerleading,’ You can see a big difference in competition groups here and in Dallas.” Easton likes attending Monsters, a hip-hop convention and competition that has allowed him to train with instructors who have worked with names like Jason Derulo, Drake, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj and many others. At these weekend conventions, Easton will start classes at 8 a.m. and have classes with each teacher until about 5 p.m. Though these are long weekend hours, Easton enjoys learning from the different teachers and meeting other dancers from all over the world. Easton has also
had opportunities to work with Matt Steffanina, and Easton’s favorite dancer, Twitch. “Twitch is a really good dancer on the Ellen Show,” Easton says. “He’s even been on a few shows and movies.” Wanting to encourage their son’s talent, James and Emily stay busy with Easton’s practices, games and competitions. They also have a three year old daughter, Maleigh, who enrolled in dance last year. She would attend her big brother’s shows and begin swaying to the music backstage. “I believe we have learned that you never know what your child will excel at,” Emily says. “From the beginning, we thought we would have a fantastic baseball player, genetically. If you would have said to us back then, ‘You will have a boy, and he will be in dance,’ we would have laughed hysterically. We’ve learned that we need to allow our children to be who they are, allow them to try new things, encourage them to not be complacent, not be arrogant and to be a team player.” During the spring, a normal week in the Bright family is packed with activities. They have baseball games throughout the week, dance on Tuesdays and Thursday’s, dance, and church on Wednesdays. They also attend conventions and competitions on the weekends. “It’s not unusual for us to leave a dance competition or practice and have Easton change in the truck as we head to baseball practice,” James says. However, Easton is content with his many activities. “I don’t think I could pick between hunting, baseball and dance,” Easton says. “I really like them all.”
Besides working with instructors, Easton likes to get new material from Youtube videos, movies like Step Up and Step Up Revolution, and from watching So You Think You Can Dance ALT-Mag.com | May 2016 017
Shine Bright with his grandmother. “Easton’s grandmother, Vicki Weeks, and grandfather, John Weeks, James’ mother and step dad, have been very active in Easton’s dance. Vicki stays on top of all the conventions around and sends Youtube videos of new material any chance she gets for Easton to watch. They have been a major contribution and encouragement to his talent,” Emily says. Several other extended family members, including George and Sherry Stegall, Emily’s mother and father, attend every in-town event, encourage Easton to “stay with it,” take him to practice and remain
018 ALT Magazine | May 2016
involved as much as possible. “Really, our entire family is very close. All members of our family including my four sisters, their spouses and our 7 nieces and nephews, all attend events when available, encourage Easton, share his videos on Facebook, and refer him as entertainment when they hear someone in need,” Emily says, “We have all shared with him dancers/singers videos that we enjoy and who were inspirations, such as, Frank Sinatra, John Travolta, Patrick Swayze and Channing Tatum.”
What does the future hold for this nine year old hiphop, free styling, baseball playing, deer hunter? For now, Easton Bright imagines that one day he will be an engineer with his own dance studio. The sky is truly the limit.
Easton is especially proud of his competition routine for this year which combines “Classic Man” by Jidenna and some Frank Sinatra. Competition season runs from about January to June. Last month at a competition at Sullivan Performing Arts Center in Texarkana, Easton was awarded first in his category, first overall, a superstar award, $410, and was a finalist for dancer of the year. However, one of his proudest moments this year occurred after the Red Lick talent show. “After I came off stage, the 8th grade class was about to come on and all the girls wanted to take a selfie with me,” Easton says with a huge smile. Though they are proud of all their son’s many accomplishments, James and Emily are even more impressed with their son’s humble attitude towards others. Besides being a great example and big brother to Maleigh, Easton’s leadership is shown in many other areas of his life. Easton is a helper at children’s church where he enjoys teaching the younger students. He recently attended his first Leadership Training for Christ in Dallas where he competed in a puppet skit, chorus and drama. Easton also was recognized this year as an Ambassador for the third grade class for Red Lick Elementary. James and Emily say they rarely have to check up on Easton’s school work. He keeps all A’s on top of his rigorous schedule and his gifted and talented classes. “Easton just shows in many ways that he enjoys leading and helping others. Easton is extremely humble, there has not been one event being baseball, dance, church, hunting, soccer etc. that Easton has EVER not made a statement about how good another child is,” Emily says. “Even when adults brag about him, he will make a statement about another child and what they did that was amazing. After each baseball game he will go through plays and say to me,
Shine Bright ‘Mom, he did really good,’ or ‘Did you see that hit he had?’ At dance, he does the same thing, he is very quick to recognize what moments that the child shined and what he liked about the dance. Even though with his talent in dance, he has the opportunity to be arrogant and a braggart, he never has been, he has a room full of trophies and not once has he ever brought a friend into his room to show them off or even tell them about it at all. He is as humble as they come.” Later this year, Easton will be attending his favorite Monster’s convention and competing there, as well as attending a National’s competition in June. Though these are more opportunities for trophies, Easton is more excited about seeing the friends he’s made and learning from new instructors. “The best thing about being in dance in being on a team, and the fact that you can be creative with it,” Easton says. “We get to go a lot of places, meet people, see different styles and make friends.” What makes all of this possible is the love and support of Easton’s family. At the end of the day, it is his parents who are taking Easton to practice, driving him to competitions, encouraging him in school, coaching the team and watching the dances. Some weekends, his parents have had to sit through up to 150 routines just to see Easton perform twice. This does not go unnoticed by Easton. “My parents help me in dance and baseball. They let me go to competitions. They are awesome,” Easton says. No matter what titles Easton brings home from baseball, dance or school this year, Easton’s parents just want him to continue having fun. “We just want him to get the best out of life, no matter what he goes into,” James says. “Whether or not he continues in dance, we just
want him to be successful,” Emily says. What does the future hold for this nine year old hip-hop, free styling, baseball playing, deer hunter? For now, Easton Bright imagines that one day he will be an engineer with his own dance studio. The sky is truly the limit.

A fun acrylic painting of a giraffe! I love bright colors and this piece was so much fun to create!
This piece was created during my senior exhibition at Henderson State University. The medium used is wine bottles, plaster, and tea bag stain. Sculpture and assemblage are my favorite mediums to work with. When creating this piece I decided to unify both of those mediums. This piece was purchased at my senior exhibit but I also create custom work in my spare time. You can contact me for custom work such as “Decended Healing” by emailing me at michon.art@gmail.com. Art is created with the intent to spread a message, hope, or feeling. Sometimes all three. “Beyond Reach” signifies that sometimes things are simply out of our hands no matter how far we are stretching for it. My hope is that my art heals the viewer as much as it heals me.

The piece is called “Old Friends, Retired”. I saw these trucks sitting in a field in Hallsville, Texas and knew I wanted to paint them. There are stories they could tell if only they could talk. I work primarily in oil paints but also work in colored pencil occasionally. I just try and bring a little joy or happiness with my paintings and love to share with others the talent God gave me.

These blooms in the yard are always a welcome sign that Spring is soon to arrive. They are tiny, and often ignored, but they are aptly named “Spring Beauty”. Caroline Joyce
INTERVIEW W/ CAROLINE JOYCE PHOTOGRAPHY: DEBBIE BROWER PHOTOGRAPHY
How did you get the gig for Rail Fest? Dr. Ben DuBois, a friend of our family, asked me to play for Main Street Texarkana’s “Dine on the Line”. When I walked off the stage, Ross Cowling with the Texarkana, Arkansas Parks Department was visiting with my father, and offered me the gig. I think I was just in the right place at the right time! I’d like to extend a huge thank you to both of them for making Rail Fest possible for me. How and why did you first pick up the guitar? On my 10th Christmas, I got a guitar, because I had really wanted one for a long time. Since I already knew how to sing and play the piano, I thought that a guitar would be a great way to add to my musical
abilities. Over the years, I’ve realized that music is my way of giving back to others what I have been given. Who are your main influences? My grandmother is a very big influence for me because, not only is she my voice and piano teacher, but she is always supportive of me. Also, my dad influences me by always encouraging me to listen to new types of music, and helps me to pursue my dreams. Next, my mom always wants what’s best for me, so she influences me by simply being my mother and having my back. Lastly, my guitar instructor, Mr. Mark Meadows, influences me by helping me expand my knowledge in all parts of guitar. Plus, he helps me achieve each goal I have every week, whether it be song writing or strumming, and let’s me use my personality in my music. What has your journey been like venturing out and becoming a professional musician, playing gigs, releasing CD’s, etc.? Do you feel like you’ve reached your goals? Playing gigs has truly been an amazing experience for me, because even though I get to play music, I also get to interact with others, which has been very fulfilling. I have played gigs, written a few songs, and expanded the genre variety in my performances. Jeff Loving, with Twisted Fork, has made it easy to get out in the community and play. Mr. Loving gave me my first paying gig. I appreciate him taking a chance on me. My ultimate goal is to make a difference in others’ lives. When I was performing at “Dine on the Line”, as I was playing, a man carried

a baby girl up to the stage who had been upset. When I looked at her, she just smiled, and it warmed my heart. I realized that even though it was just a child, I had changed her attitude. So, I’m constantly trying to achieve that goal through my music.
What would you do if you couldn’t fail? If I knew I couldn’t fail, I would publish an album with my original songs about hope and other life lessons, and hope that it inspired others.
Where do you find your inspiration for song ideas? My inspiration comes from mostly my everyday life experiences. It also depends on my mood, or what’s going on in the world. For instance, my song “Values”, is basically asking...what would our lives be like without the good thoughts and actions of people? I thought of this right after my athletics coach, Coach Clark, talked to me and my teammates about respecting others and always having a positive attitude. It really made me think about how I can spread this message to others through my music.
How do you define success? I believe success comes in all shapes and sizes; from putting a smile on someone’s face to finishing a show strong. Success is changing someone’s life for the better.
Where is the best place people can find more information about you? Hear your music? I’m still young. Although I’ve played for large crowds, Rail Fest will be the largest venue I’ve played. I’m just looking forward to having fun and doing my best to make the show successful. I’m still working on venues, and a reputation for myself. I am hoping my performance speaks for itself, and the public will hear more about me in the future.
Who or what stands between you and your dream goal? No one! Honestly, I’m only 14, so I’m not sure what my dream goal is...but I know I want to make a difference. How would you describe yourself as a musician, in one sentence? I am just a girl who has set out to change someone’s world through each song I perform. Where do you see yourself as a musician in five years? In five years, I hope to be attending a university where I can study more about music, which will help me be a better songwriter and performer.
What music gets you excited, and why? Pop music gets me excited because my friends know it and we can enjoy the upbeat music together without worrying about what we sound like. Country really speaks to the heart for me...it really makes me happy! ALT-Mag.com | May 2016 035

Portrait of an Artist: Jeannie Knod Edwards on the Creative Art of Instruction Before Jeannie Knod Edwards was an educator and award winning artist, she was a young girl in DeQueen, AR just beginning to sketch. “I always loved to draw, but I never had any formal training until the 12th grade,” she says. “I liked to draw horses. I tried to draw faces. I wasn’t very good at it, but I tried! You always think your drawings are good at the time. Now I don’t draw horses at all. Your interests change [over time].” Nevertheless, her desire for art only grew, and she later attended Henderson State University where she earned a degree in Art. She started her teaching career in Lewisville, AR, teaching both junior high school and high school art. There, she would frequently collaborate with other teachers on creative projects such as creating puppets to act out student written plays which they would perform at the elementary school. She also encouraged her students to submit their art into area art shows and organized a culminating spring exhibition to display their work. After four years in Lewisville, she then began teaching at Arkansas High School

where she would go on to teach for 32 more years. She credits her start at AHS to the influence of her mentor, Jo Morgan. Her students consistently performed well in local, state and national art competitions in addition to participating in the TASD show. While at Arkansas High, Jeannie worked in the same department as her brother, Glen Knod, who taught art and eventually started a pottery class. The two were particularly instrumental in expanding the TASD art show to include all grade levels for many years across the Texarkana Arkansas School District, in addition to founding the TASD Purchase Award, a contest

She feels that it is important to continuously perfect her craft in the company of great artists in order to better serve her students. Throughout her years of teaching, she can recall many students whose skill and resilience have moved her to the core. “So many times there are students that just touch your life.” Among those is a young lady named

It was nice to have someone to share, discuss and learn from.” Artistic talent seems to run in the family, and was perhaps inherited from their mother, Edna Fenton, who began painting with watercolor later in life. In addition to Jeannie and Glen, their sister, Jana, is an artist as well. Both Jeannie and her daughter (also named Jana) teach at the Kid’s College program at Texarkana College during the summer. Though now retired from the high school, she is still fond of her Razorback family. Many of Jeannie’s former students have gone on to be educators, administrators, ministers and other successful and prominent members of the community. Her husband Richard, and daughters, Margaret and Jana, have grown used to her frequent reunions with former students in public. “I love running into them and seeing how they are. When we go out, my family always teases me that it never fails that we will run into one of my former students.” Since her retirement, Jeannie has had more time to pursue her own artistic endeavors. art competitions. Most recently one of her pieces received first place in a national pastel exhibit. She frequently participates in local fundraising events such as Party with Picassos and has donated artwork to support the animal shelter and other charitable organizations. She is currently working on an abstract series of large paintings entitled, “Renewed”. Though she truly enjoys working on her own art, she equally enjoys instruction. “My passion for art inspired me to become a teacher. I wanted to [motivate] students to have a passion for art, [too].” Each Tuesday and Wednesday she holds private art classes for both adults and children at Skyler’s. Her pupils range in age from 8-80 years old. One of their first assignments is to draw a picture of their hand, followed by their reflection in the mirror. No matter their age or skill, Jeannie stresses the importance of starting each of her students off with the basics. “Some people want to just jump in and start painting, but just like learning to play the piano, you must learn the basics first. There’s always a beginning. If you’ve never been taught

She has inspired other students to see how far she’s come. She has a special place in my heart.” Just recently, with the help of several of her adult class members, Jeannie began teaching art classes to a group of around 15 children at Water Springs Ranch. “I felt like God has blessed me so much, I wanted to give back.” The organization is currently accepting donations to assist with art supplies and materials. All in all, in the midst of her numerous awards and accolades, she takes the most pride in her student’s success. “It is my great honor and pleasure to accompany students on their creative and artistic journeys,” she says. “I love to see my students move forward and grow. I hope that maybe I’ve made a difference in their lives.” For more information or to register for private art sessions, contact Jeannie Knod Edwards at (903)-773-8074. “Our favorite thing about our wedding that made it so special was all of our friends and family that came to celebrate it with us. They made our wedding day so much fun and we are blessed to have every one of them in our lives!” The Love Story: I fell in love with Mark on December 11th, 2014 at a Garth Brooks concert in Little Rock. It was the third concert he had taken me to and the third date we had ever been on together. As we danced together to “The Dance” I just knew he was my person. We spent literally every day, after that concert, together and he became my very best friend. He asked me to spend the rest of my life with him on the evening of April 17th, 2015 in the middle of his living room floor, after I had just gotten home from work and was least expecting it. It was the most perfect proposal I could have ever imagined! Our friends and family thought we were crazy for being together for only a short period of time and already getting engaged, but we just told them, “When you know, you know.” And I completely believe that statement with all of my heart, because after that Garth Brooks concert I knew that I never wanted to spend another day without him. We spent almost a year engaged and had our wedding on March 12th, 2016. I’m now finally Mrs. Brewer and can honestly say that I married my best friend! I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.

RYAN & KADY MODISETTE Tied the Knot: September 19, 2015 PHOTOGRAPHER: KEITH POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY
During my freshman year of college my roommate, Lisa matched Ryan and I together. Lisa was hanging out with a group of her hometown friends and she realized that Ryan was single, and so was I. She also remembered we already would share a lot of common interests. That night she mentioned me to Ryan and showed him some pictures from Facebook. He planned a fourwheeler ride and had Lisa invite me to come so we could meet. I didn’t know any of this at the time until much later in our relationship. The only thing I knew was that Lisa had mentioned Ryan in passing and I knew he would be at the ride that night. The first weekend of September 2012, we all got together and somehow I ended up on the back of Ryan’s four wheeler. I immediately fell for his green eyes, easy smile and fun personality. He was in awe of all the pictures of big bucks that I had killed over the years and quietly admitted that they were bigger then all of his. (haha) That night after the ride Ryan asked Lisa for his number told her to get me to text him within the next few days. It wasn’t hard for her to convince me to contact him, so I started texting him the very next day. After talking pretty much nonstop, and hanging out multiple times, on September 17th, 2012, Ryan showed up to my dorm room at college and surprised me, took me by both hands and said “I just wanted to ask you in person, but will you be my girlfriend?” and I said “absolutely.” The 2 and 1/2 years of dating were never boring. We continued to go on four wheeler rides quite frequently and spent as much time together as possible, like any dating couple does. June 3rd, 2015, I went down to see him at his house, sat down on the couch. He came behind me and handed me a squirming little puppy with a ring hanging from its tiny blue collar. Ryan got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. With a proposal like that, how could I say no? We planned our entire wedding in 3 and 1/2 months, and Ryan’s papaw married us two days after our 3 year anniversary on September 19th, 2015, at my dad’s house. I fall more and more for him every day. It’s so amazing to find your best friend and be able to plan the future together. Now, I get to kiss him anytime I want.
One of my favorite things that made our wedding special was Ryan’s papaw, Larry, got to be our officiant. In our wedding, I involved as many family members as I possibly could. Ryan grew up spending a lot of time with Larry out working in Larry’s shop and at his grandparents house. When I first met Ryan and he introduced me to Larry, we instantly clicked. Larry always made a point to be involved in what was going on in our lives and encourages Ryan and I both in our careers and our relationship. 054 ALT Magazine | May 2016

One of my favorite things that made my wedding special was that my husband took my promise ring he had gave me in high-school and had it re-made into my wedding band. 056 ALT Magazine | May 2016
Colton and I met in 6th grade when he moved to our little home town of Spring Hill, Arkansas. As soon as he walked in the door, I told my friend he would be my husband one day. We became best friends but did not start dating until we were 16 years old. It only took us 10 days to fall in love, we knew we had something special and that it was meant to be! We continued through highschool head over heals in love, cheering each other on in every sport we played together. On Valentines Day after two years of college on the land where we plan to build a house and live, Colton took me to the top of the hill and made me hide my eyes as he got out and set up a hundred small candles in the back of his truck. He took me to the back of his truck and set me on the tail gait, we laid in his truck and watched the stars for a while then he reached over and grabbed his Bible I had got him in high-school. He started reading from Mark 10:6-9 (6 But in the beginning of creation God made them male and female.7 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife. 8 and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what

BLESSING TREE FARM PHOTOGRAPHY: TEENA ELROD PHOTOGRAPHY
Texarkana’s Newest Wedding and Event Venue The idea of Blessing Tree Farm – Texarkana’s newest wedding and event venue – came to life without name or plans on paper, but there was a grand dream of building a barn for weddings and events. And to Ron and Lisa Vickers and the friends and family that have pulled vines, cleared trees, helped pick fabric and even jumped through mud puddles, Blessing Tree Farm, or the barn as it is lovingly referred, is a real thing that comes from a deep place of love. Work began in November 2014 on Blessing Tree Farm, located on private property just off Old Post Road. The venue will be completed in time to host its first wedding for Kayla Kidd and Caleb Fawcett on May 7. Blessing Tree Farm was designed with people in mind. The owners thought long and hard about the options Blessing Tree Farm would offer and made sure they were what people who were hosting an event would want in an event venue. 060 ALT Magazine | May 2016
“We are over the moon with joy about the completion of Blessing Tree Farm,” said the owner, Lisa Vickers. “We have had a lot of interest and private tours, even during construction. And so far we are reserved to host eight weddings this year, and that is before the first wedding will ever take place!” The Vickers wanted to make sure that Blessing Tree Farm was one-of-a-kind with one-of-akind fixtures, accessories and furnishings. The woodworking, light fixtures, stained glass, and repurposed treasures were all made by hand by the Vickers with the intent of creating a place that is as exceptional as each couple who will wed under its roof. Blessing Tree Farm has a perfect combination of possibilities, an event could be rustic or glamorous or a little of both. It is distinctive with an industrial but whimsical flair. The barninspired structure is perfectly designed to host up to 200 people at indoor or outdoor weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners or any other type of social gathering. Blessing Tree Farm’s deep low-country style patios, exposed wood beams and party lights strategically placed around the property create
a distinctive backdrop for a truly southern affair. According to Lisa, a venue should have the right atmosphere and should contribute to making families’ dreams come true. Plus, the amenities Blessing Tree Farm can provide will contribute to the joy of a stress free wedding day for everyone attending. To make Blessing Tree Farm even more extraordinary, special people to the couple understand what a godsend the opening means to Ron and Lisa. Because of this, they asked friends and family to write special messages. Inside the walls, hidden from public view, are 100s of messages directed to couples who will wed, ones meant for Ron & Lisa and blessings to the barn. “This whole process from conception to fruition has been a blessing. We selected the name Blessing Tree Farm because we want to share blessings. Everything about the venue has been carefully thought out to promote blessings, faith, steadfastness, and love,” said Lisa. The Vickers want to be known for hospitality. They want to welcome everyone like a guest of Blessing Tree Farm and the Vickers are the host. This venue has a friendly, southern, welcoming feel and they want each event to feel that hospitality. Blessing Tree Farms is currently available for private tours.

FOR
Dine Out & Donate APRAXIA Who do you know who goes or has gone to speech therapy? Often, it’s easy to ‘see’ when someone is struggling with a disability but when the struggle is with speech, it’s often hidden. People tend to think there is something ‘wrong’ with the child when perhaps all they really need is a little more attention or patience. Share your voice & come out and have dinner while raising support for APRAXIA AWARENESS. Apraxia is a neurological speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to clearly & correctly produce syllables & words. Can you imagine knowing what you want to say but not being able to get the words out? Bring in this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that a portion of your total will be donated to Apraxia Awareness. Proceeds will be used to pay for speech therapy and ipads.

E NGAGE MENTS ALT’s Contest Winners RHETT BRIGHT & SUMER JOHNSON We met in the fall of 2013 and enjoyed two years of friendship before deciding to give official dating a chance. It didn’t take long to realize we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, so on March 5, 2016, Rhett proposed. God has orchestrated our love story in an amazing and beautiful way. We are praying that He continues to guide, equip, and bless our preparation for the big day and the years to follow!
Rhett and Sumer are getting married December 17,2016 at First Baptist Chruch in Texarkana. 064 ALT Magazine | May 2016
Engagements
JORDAN WHITE & HANNAH COCHRAN A proposal on a mission trip in Israel overlooking the city lights of Jerusalem was the perfect way to start the beginning of the rest of our lives. From a friendship that started during childhood through God and church to High School sweethearts to finally almost being Mr. and Mrs.; we are ecstatic to announce that our wedding is on November 12. “We love because he first loved us.” I John 4:9. I love you to the moon and back.
TYLER BLUE & TIFFANY LEE Tyler and I met in high school. We were friends for a couple of years before we had a brief relationship. We both then went separate ways for a while to grow and find ourselves, and soon reconnected. We honestly give all the credit of our love story to the Lord. We believe He made each of us specifically for the other. I prayed for a man like Tyler and he prayed for someone like me and the Lord fulfills all His promises and brought us back together on His perfect timing. Our story isn’t the most unique or crazy, but it is by far our favorite. Tiffany and Tyler are getting married June 4, 2016. They have chosen Garrison Gardens in Texarkana, AR as their venue. TY THOMPSON & KENDAL DOCKERY We actually met in 7th grade, but were never really friends through school. One year into college we reunited and the rest is history! We will have dated for 5 and a half years when our wedding date comes around!
HUNTER TEEL & MCKENZIE HARRIS Hunter and I actual meet at Wells Fargo (my work). We crushed on each other a long time before anyone made a move but we laugh about it now. Every time he came in the bank he always made sure that I was the one to help him and of course I couldn’t stop talking to all my co-workers about him after he left. One of the girls always said, “Ya’ll are going to get married.” After a few months of flirting back and forth Hunter got his mom to text one of my co-workers and ask about me then a few days later he sent me a friend request on Facebook! A few weeks later we started dating! Our first date was at Gusano’s with his brother and his girlfriend and I can still remember how nervous and excited I was at the same time. (so much that I barely talked.) Then after dinner we went down to the river in the jeep and of course hit a few back roads. Hunter and I found out real quick that we had so many common interests. It’s so crazy how two people can fall in love. Now, a year later, he asked my dad for my hand in marriage! Hunter made me breakfast that morning and a cup of coffee in a fancy new coffee cup. Of course I didn’t think anything of the coffee cup but little did I know at the bottom of that cup, I had a huge surprise that said, “Marry me?” On February 13th Hunter got down on one knee and asked ME to be his wife. I can’t wait to tie the knot with the love of my life. #teelstietheknot Hunter and McKenzie are getting married December 3, 2016. They have chosen Twin Creeks Pavilion in Texarkana, AR, as their venue. 066 ALT Magazine | May 2016

Micah made the entire process of picking out, designing and purchasing an engagement ring easy and enjoyable! He gives individual attention to each detail to ensure that customers are not only satisfied, but thrilled! We couldn’t be happier with our purchase and the service since the purchase has been just as excellent! We tell everyone, who is that “Jared” guy? We went to MICAH, and we are beyond happy! We recommend checking with Micah before making a purchase anywhere else. You won’t be sorry you did! Married April 2, 2016

STORY OF THE MONTH BY: MARGIE PRICE JOHNSON I have been off work for 10 months due to someone hitting me with a door at work and knocking me down and breaking my back! When I let my dog out this morning I saw that some other dogs in my neighborhood had made a terrible mess of my trash that my daughter and granddaughter had taken to the curb yesterday. I’m not physically able at this time to clean up the mess they made so I just closed the door and thought I would have to call my daughter to come pick it up which is a long trip for her. The next time I let my dog out I saw that someone had completely cleaned up the mess! I don’t really know my neighbors due to working everyday until someone broke my back! I live in the Forrest Park edition and to the kind person that did this for me I want to say THANK YOU so much and I really hope you see this post and know how much that meant to me!!! WE BELIEVE THERE ARE SOME REALLY GREAT PEOPLE WHO DO GOOD THINGS FOR THE CITIZENS OF THIS COMMUNITY. ALT MAGAZINE IS SEARCHING FOR YOUR STORIES!

TALES
New Find (At Least For Me) I have found something that I think is cool and wished I had years ago, but better late than never. It’s a download for our GPS units called “Boatlanes.com.” It lets you download tracks of old boat lanes which might not be as visable or marked as they were years before. This download has boat lanes for Sam Rayburn, Lake Fork, Toledo Bend and Lake O’ the Pines. The lanes are trails that you can follow to get from point A to B. I have not yet used the trails as I downloaded
them between tournaments, but Mark Hensiek has downloaded them and used them on both Rayburn and Toledo Bend. He says they are pretty darn handy. The tracks download into your unit (Lowrance or Hummingbird) and are an overlay and are easy to follow. If you are like me, I don’t completely trust the boat lane markers on Toledo Bend that are built into my Navionics card and this will give you a second set of marks to key off of. Mark used the Boatlanes.com download to run from Pendelton Bridge down to
the dam and back on Toledo Bend and way up the lake on Rayburn through the woods in the now unmarked boat lane. He reported no issues either time. “No issues” means that I did not have to go get him and tow him back to the ramp. If you fish these lakes you might want to check it out.

FINANCIAL FOCUS
W/DUSTIN STRINGER
Should You Be Working With a Financial Advisor? Do you need a financial road map? The short answer is yes. But even if you don’t have a formal financial strategy, you are still on a financial path. Hopefully it’s a positive one that leads to financial well-being.
WHEN TO CONSULT A PRO So how do you know when you’ve arrived at a fork in the road where you need professional advice? Following are some situations in which you should consider working with a financial advisor:
But without planning your route, how will you know where you’ll end up? At certain times in your life, it may make sense to work with a professional to help you create and stick to a financial road map.
1. You are not sure how to balance multiple financial goals. A financial advisor who is a fiduciary can take a holistic view of your financial situation. He or she can advise you on your various financial goals, as well as how you can achieve them given finite resources. Should you pay down debt before investing? Do you have the appropriate investment strategy in your 401(k)? Do you have a risk-management strategy? Your advisor can help you answer these questions in light of your whole financial picture and advise you in an unbiased way.
PLANNING YOUR ROUTE If you’ve ever used a GPS app like Waze to avoid traffic, you know how useful a road map can be to get from point A to point B. You feel more confident in arriving at your destination, and you’re on time thanks to the added guidance. Why not do the same for your financial life? While the financial equivalent of Waze — which could include online retirement calculators or budgeting tools such as Mint.com — will serve you well for some aspects of your financial life, other aspects may require a professional to look under the hood and analyze your needs. If all you need to do is figure out how to budget and save, a simple Excel sheet might be all you need. But what about when multiple retirement accounts enter the picture, for instance, or when you have a large windfall with tax implications, like an inheritance or the sale of a business? During such financial transitions, hiring a professional to help navigate your way may become necessary, or it may be helpful to have a professional to manage the increasing complexity of your financial life.
2. You don’t know what is in your portfolio or you don’t understand it. Education is a crucial part of financial advice. An advisor can analyze your portfolio, explain it to you plainly, and determine whether your investments are appropriate for your goals and life situation. Some of the factors that go into this analysis include fund expenses, tax efficiency, and the overall asset allocation in light of the risk and possible return. 3. You want to get started on the right foot after a big change. Perhaps you’ve just started a new job, gotten married or divorced, or even inherited money. All of these are changes that span the personal to the financial and legal realms. A financial advisor will work with you to manage these changes in your life in a way that minimizes costs and puts you on a solid foundation for the future. He or she also should coordinate with other professionals in your life, such as your estate attorney and tax professional.
STRINGER WEALTH MANAGEMENT LPL FINANCIAL StringerWealthManagement.net
4. You have not made the financial progress you hoped. If it seems like you’re stuck in the same place financially that you were a year ago, or five years ago, then now may be the time to put your plans on paper. A written financial strategy can help you benchmark your progress from year to year, keeping you accountable to your financial goals and breaking them down into small, achievable steps. The idea is that you will be pleasantly surprised with the progress you’ve made, and feel motivated to do more and achieve your goals faster. 5. You want a tune up of your financial health. Just like a service appointment with a mechanic, having a financial review can unearth problems you may need to address, such as overspending, too much debt or not enough saving for your goals. Unlike going to the mechanic, though, your financial plan may reveal opportunities for you to increase your net worth. That’s certainly more exciting than a bill for parts and labor! When choosing a financial advisor to help you on your journey, make sure you are working with someone who and acts as a true fiduciary — someone who is legally obligated to put your financial interests above his or her own and avoid conflicts of interest. Unfortunately, not all advisors are fiduciaries. This article originally appeared on Nerd Wallet. The information contained in this report should be used for informational purposes only.
