Each year, we highlight veterans in our community. Serving our country is something I appreciate, and I know that without these amazing men and women, we would not have the freedoms that so many take for granted. To enlist to protect all of us, knowing that they may not come home, is selfless and tells you a lot about a person’s character. Although I never served in the military, I have many friends who did. Many who saw combat, especially, it seems, that those in Vietnam have demons they continue to fight. It makes me sad to think that after all they went through, they continue to have issues. Thanks to all who have served our country. Although this month is also Thanksgiving, I try to be thankful all year long for the many things God has blessed me with! I have a wonderful family, lots of great friends, and my staff is amazing! How much more can one person ask for in life? Well, maybe we can ask for great food! I consider myself a true connoisseur of food, which is evidently in my less-than-thin body. However, I enjoy life and love new flavors and recipes. Now, if someone would like to come cook for me, that would be great! Oh well, I will just continue to support our local restaurants on a regular basis. This year, our Thanksgiving is going to be a little different. We actually are going to have what I am calling “Thanksmas” because sometime in the first part of December, we will celebrate both holidays. My daughter, Jaclyn, as most of you know, is a Texas State Trooper who lives in Del Rio, Texas. She works holidays, and we are going to have our holiday when she can come to town. My son, Michael, who lives in Dallas, will be here, and I can’t wait! Our family will all be together. It doesn’t matter to me that it’s not on the actual day everyone celebrates. It matters that we are all together as a family. So no matter what you are thankful for this Thanksgiving, remember to celebrate the things that God has blessed you with all year long. Happy Thanksgiving.

JOHN ROSS: ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE. Although John Ross, Attorney and Senior Partner at Ross and Shoalmire, P.L.L.C., is a successful lawyer and devoted family man today; as a teenager he felt that he lacked a sense of direction and purpose. John credits his four years in the United States Marine Corps for helping to develop the discipline and determination that he lives by today. After graduating from San Marcos High School, John made the decision to enroll at Texas A&M as a chemistry major. “Unfortunately, I found out relatively quickly I wasn’t interested in chemistry and frankly, lacked the discipline to complete that type of program regardless of my desires,” John says. “I knew deep down that I needed a personal challenge and began to consider military service.” The only member of John’s family who had any military background was his maternal grandfather, a Navy man from WWII; however, he never spoke of his time in service. Curious about the military, John asked around and visited with recruiters with one simple question: “Which military branch is the hardest?” Universally, the answer was the Marines. “My goal in joining the military was to challenge myself. What better way than to select the branch of service that is best known for its difficulty?” John says.

Once he enlisted, John realized quickly that, contrary to most people’s imagination, the physicality of Marine service is not the most demanding part. “Yes, you need to be in good physical condition, but typically nothing greater than a high school athlete. What is really challenging, and what separates the Marines from the other branches, is the mental strain imposed on you,” John says. “Each Marine is expected to operate at 100% of their ability at all times even in the most extreme circumstances. For example, it’s not about your ability to run; it’s about your ability to run, having not eaten in two days, through dense jungle, in the rain, at night. It’s not about whether you are physically capable, but rather can you push past the overwhelming mental fatigue that tells you to quit?” John served with Alpha Company, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division whose headquarters was Marine Air/ Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California. Due to their location in the Mojave desert, they trained for desert based warfare. However, during his four years, John was deployed twice to southeast Asia where they were based out of Okinawa. “In Asia, we trained in jungle-based warfare and participated in several operations as attaché to local fighting forces, primarily related to anti-drug trafficking operations,” John says. “During those 015

deployments, I spent time in virtually every country in that region including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and others. I also spent a few months aboard the USS Fort McHenry.” Like many veterans, John says that the most rewarding part of his service was “without a doubt” the lifelong friendships developed over the years. “There is no bond like that of a brotherin-arms. Those relationships are irreplaceable and cannot be re-created in the civilian world,” John says. “I’m in touch with many of the guys I served with, and I have become close friends to many other Marines over the years just because of our mutual experiences. We text and call occasionally, and if there’s any real good that has come from social media, it’s the ability to reconnect with these guys who are now spread from coast to coast.” 016

John reconnects with other veterans to celebrate Veteran’s Day each year. “What has become somewhat of a ritual among myself and some other veterans is to compete against one another for as many free offers as we can obtain in one day. It’s somewhat of a joke among us but we’ll tag one another on social media as we travel from business to business having meals, drinks, carwashes, haircuts or whatever else is being offered to the veterans,” John says. “But often, during the day, you’ll meet countless other vets from every generation and can share a story, laugh at the absurdity of us all cramming into a Denny’s at 6am to save $5.00, and reconnect with some of those brothers and sisters that maybe have temporarily slipped out of your life.” After four years, John left the Marines with a renewed sense of purpose and self. “More than anything, time in the Marines gives you a window into yourself and your abilities. They push you to the edge and beyond which shows you both your true strengths and your personal failings,” John says. “These are hard lessons to learn on both sides of that equation, but it also provides invaluable knowledge that prepares you for all of the obstacles to come.” A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 1

Back in the civilian sector, John quickly realized that the lessons he learned as a Marine were deeply ingrained in all aspects of life. He enrolled in college classes at Texas State University, and this time around, he knew he had the discipline to finish his studies. “I was in an accounting class sitting next to a guy who was 18- or 19-years-old. About halfway through the semester he commented on the fact that I had received A’s on every exam and homework assignment. To him it seemed impossible that I would have straight A’s in every class while taking 18 hours of courses and working part time,” John says. “ I replied that in the last few months of class, I had been able to eat when I was hungry, sleep when I was tired, stay out of the rain and the heat and all without worrying about fighting. Frankly, college was a piece of cake. That young man lacked perspective but I understood him because that’s who I was before.” John often hears people say that they think every young person should have to join the military but he disagrees. “It’s not right for everyone; however, the discipline, character and strength of will that military service can provide would certainly benefit many more young kids than the very few that volunteer today,” John says. “Our youth have more of everything available to them, but some of those opportunities have left them without the grit to push through adversity.”

Join the Air Force,” John says. “Do you want to test your mettle and earn a title that can never be taken? Become a Marine.” John graduated with a bachelor’s in business administration and a major in accounting. Afterwards, he enrolled in and graduated from Texas Tech Law School. “Becoming a lawyer was an afterthought,” John says. “However, I wanted to advance my knowledge of tax law and estate planning and only law school could offer that opportunity.” Today, John is an attorney and senior partner at the eponymous firm Ross and Shoalmire, Elder Law Attorneys, P.L.L.C. Through the years, John has helped with estate planning and asset protection for high-net worth clients; he has assisted countless families by protecting their life savings from nursing home costs; and he developed plans for disabled individuals, including special needs trusts to maximize their resources. He is a current member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and a Judge Advocate for the American Legion. He has published articles on Elder Law and

The couple previously hosted the Aging Insight television and radio programs until 2020, and they currently publish the Aging Insight Resource Guide. “Lisa is a constant presence in my life and the perfect complement to my personality. Where I struggle, she strives and vice versa,” John says. “My parents live in Texarkana and have been an invaluable asset in helping Lisa and I raise our children while we built our law firm. And our four children are a constant reminder to me, that I must excel daily in life, in work and in love, to set an example that they might strive to emulate.”

The desire to excel drives John because he knows what his mind and body are capable of. The Marines taught him to push through any obstacle, and this is something that he carries into every aspect of his life. “The phrase ‘Once a Marine, Always a Marine’ is not just some cliché saying. It is a way of life that persists,” John says. “It wakes you at 5 a.m. to go workout even when you’re tired, it pushes you to the end of a 14-hour workday because your family and your employees depend on you, it makes you push your children because you know the untapped potential that lies within them, and you love deeply those few who you’ve allowed into your circle because you’ve seen how fleeting life can be."

ANDY ANDERSON UNITED STATES AIR FORCE

Lynn (Andy) Anderson joined the United States Air Force when he was 17-years-old. “The military seemed like an adventure and a way to get out of a small town with no jobs,” Andy says. In the nine years that Andy served, he was able to take classes and gain valuable experience. “I took a lot of basic electronics classes, and I worked on quite a bit of aviation equipment used in civilian aircraft. I also worked on all radar, navigation, and weapons computers’ systems and was able to drive cranes, big semi-tractors, and trucks,” Andy says. “One habit that I also learned in the military that I use daily is how to be punctual.” 022

Looking back on his years in the service, Andy is most proud of his time in the Gulf War. “I worked on planes coming back from the Gulf War, and I got to work on nuclear missiles and jets carrying nuclear missiles,” Andy says. When Andy thinks about Veteran’s Day, he says that the best way to express gratitude is to provide more services and resources for vets returning home. “So many vets are returning home with PTSD, and so many are homeless,” Andy says. “They need our help.” Most recently, Andy has served his community by helping with Humane Society and Toby Tales Wildlife.

Jay Hall joined the Marines when he was only 19-years-old. Though he was young, he knew that he was making the right decision. “I wanted to serve my country and planned on making it a career,” Jay says. Jay had heard that life in the Marines was tough, and it lived up to its reputation. “Everything I had been told was absolutely true!” Jay says. “But it was the best decision I ever made. I learned skills like organization, structure, teamwork, and the unwillingness to give up.”

“There are many sacrifices that go into putting on that uniform.” Jay takes much pride in being a veteran. To him, the word “brotherhood” will always remind him of the lessons he learned and the experiences he had through his time in the service. “I am proud to have served my country,” Jay says. “I love this country, its constitution, and its people. We live in the greatest country on this planet!”

FRANK (BOB) HARVEY, JR UNITED STATES ARMY

Frank (Bob) Harvey Jr. joined the Army Draft at 18 years of age. “At the time, I was unable to afford college, but I felt the need to move on. Being able to go to college afterward on the G.I. Bill helped me make the decision,” Bob says. “Also, coming from a religious background, I put the decision in God’s hands.” Bob was sent to Fort Sam Houston for Medic Training, but Bob was worried about the perception that soldiers could become targets as medics in Vietnam. “I continued to have faith, and while other medics were being sent to Vietnam, my orders were to move across the base of Fort Sam Houston for training as an orthopedic technician. In fact, I had the honor of graduating top of my class, and I was given the opportunity to remain and teach the next group of orthopedic students coming through.” Through his experience teaching, Bob was able 028

to be there for his students. “Teaching helped me to gain the ability to work with my students. There was a lot of mental stress at the time, especially since we were in the Army during a war that so many were against,” Bob says. During Bob’s time at Fort Sam Houston, he was promoted to be in charge of Ft. Sam Houston Beach Pavilion Hospital Annex, which was part of the Brooke Medical Center. Working in the orthopedic section, Bob helped with casts, tractions, and orthopedic surgeries. “The hospital had four wards, and most of the time, there were up to 300 patients. Most of those patients were returning from Vietnam,” Bob says. “It was a fulltime job working with wound care and keeping the soldiers’ spirits high. Many of them suffered not only physical trauma/wounds but also mental trauma. A lot of them didn’t want to go home that way.” A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 1

Bob got out of the Army in 1970 and enlisted in the Navy in 1974 as an OSVET (Other Service Vet in Electronics). Later, he went on to start the company VanCo Systems in Texarkana. “I originally started from the tech side of the business. I went on to be district manager for Adler Royal Corp. in charge of Texas and Louisiana,” Bob says. “Then, I sold that business, and now I am involved in exporting copiers to many countries.” Looking back on his time in the service, Bob says that he is most proud of his two-year tour, where he received respect from the patients who called him “Doc.” He also says that serving his country taught him to truly understand the word “respect” in all walks of life. “I am very happy with the respect from the public that all veterans receive today,” Bob says. “It was not like that when our Vietnam vets were returning home.”

TREY PESEK UNITED STATES NAVY

Trey Pesek joined the Navy when he was only 18-years-old. “Like many young adults, I was unsure of what I wanted to do coming out of high school, but at a job fair, I talked to a Navy recruiter. When I was talking to him, it just clicked. Serving was for me,” Trey says. “Plus, getting out of Texarkana was probably the best thing for me since I was somewhat of a troublemaker.” Though he wasn’t sure of what to expect when he signed up, Trey says that serving on an aircraft carrier is an unbelievable experience. “Only a few people have known what life is like onboard a floating city,” Trey says. Every time Trey hears the word “shipmate,” it reminds him of the Navy. “If you had your back turned to someone, and they yelled out ‘shipmate,’ you knew that either a friend was 030

about to joke with you, or you had messed up somehow and were about to get an earful from a superior,” Trey says. Trey served for eight years, and he learned many life lessons from his time in the Navy. “Probably the biggest thing I learned was to take pride in myself and everything I do,” Trey says. “Also, when we would dock in a foreign country, getting to see other cultures gave me a really different perspective on life and allowed me to see how good we actually have it in America. I learned to respect and honor our freedom that much more.” For Trey, one of the best ways to celebrate and show gratitude to veterans and what they’ve done for our country would be to simply thank a veteran for their service. “I also think that it’s important to give to a veteran’s cause like the Wounded Warrior Project, Operation Second A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 1

Chance, or the Fisher House Foundation,” Trey says. Some of the habits Trey picked up in the service stick with him today. “I try to finish what I start and respect everyone, no matter who they are or where they came from,” Trey says. Overall, Trey says he wouldn’t be the person he is today without his eight years in the Navy. “Sailing around the world two times and visiting over six countries gave me so much valuable life experience,” Trey says. “If you’re getting out of high school and you’re unsure of what to do next, think about joining the service. Getting out of your parent’s house, living somewhere new, and seeing other parts of the world changed my life, and I’d bet it would change yours, too.”

CHRIS SANDERS UNITED STATES MARINE CORP

Master Sergeant Chris Sanders joined the United States Marine Corps when he was nineteen years old. His older brother previously joined the marines, and Chris wanted to follow in his footsteps. “I always looked up to him,” Chris says. “Plus, I had a strong patriotism, and I always figured I would join the military service. The USMC got me.” When Chris joined, he knew that the service was very regimented. “It was exactly what I expected and what I really needed as a young man,” Chris says. Chris served his country for 23 years. He was part of the infantry for five years and spent the next 18 years as a bomb technician. “I’m most proud of becoming an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist,” Chris says. 034

Chris started his service career with two tours in Beirut in 1983 and 1984. He also worked for the state department and lived in Africa and Ireland, though he saw many other countries throughout his career. Chris was hit with an IED in Iraq in 2004, and he also earned the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and three Combat Action Ribbons. To Chris, words like “accountability” and “loyalty” will never mean the same after these 23 years in the service. “Throughout my time in the marines, I became more of a team player, and it prepared me for life after the service,” Chris says. “The military also reinforced the importance of family both in military and civilian life.” In addition, Chris says that he developed habits from military service that he still uses today.

“I still value loyalty, accountability, and taking care of my subordinate,” Chris says.

Overall, Chris is proud of his military service, and it means something when people express their gratitude to him or any veteran who has served. “In my experience, people appreciate my service,” Chris says. “They walk up and thank me for my service all the time.”

CASSEROLE SERVES 6

TIME 30 MINS

I N GREDIEN TS Crust • 1 Cup Brown Sugar • 1/3 Cup Flour • 1 Cup Chopped Nuts (pecans preferred) • 1/3 Stick Butter - melted (do not omit or reduce this amount) Sweet Potato Mixture • 3 cups mashed sweet potatoes (I boil these the day before and put in fridge overnight to save prep time) • 1 Cup Sugar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 2 eggs, well beaten • 1 Stick Butter - 1/2 cup) melted

METHOD BAKING

METHOD 1. Combine brown sugar, flour, nuts and butter in mixing bowl. Set aside. 2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 3. Combine sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs and butter in a mixing bowl in the order listed. Mix thoroughly. 4. Pour mixture into buttered baking dish. 5. Sprinkle the surface of the sweet potato mixture evenly with the crust mixture. 6. Bake for 30 minutes. Allow to set at least 30 minutes before serving. 7. Hint: Double the recipe! People will love the leftovers, which also freeze beautifully. Delicious!

SALAD I N G REDIEN TS Salad • 2 lbs green seedless grapes • 2 lbs red seedless grapes • 8 ounces sour cream • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened • 1/2 Cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, to taste Topping • 1 Cup Brown Sugar, packed, to taste • 1 Cup Chopped Pecans, to taste

METHOD 1. Wash and stem grapes. Set aside. 2. Mix sour cream, cream cheese, white sugar and vanilla by hand until blended. 3. Stir grapes into mixture, and pour in large serving bowl. 4. For topping: Combine brown sugar and crushed pecans. Sprinkle over top of grapes to cover completely. 5. Chill overnight.

METH OD 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Wrap 8 to 10 beans in 1/2 slices of bacon until all beans are used. Place in casserole dish. 3. Melt butter and brown sugar. Pour over beans wrapped in bacon.

MOUSSE METHOD I N GREDIEN TS • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped • 1/2 cup water, divided • 3 egg yolks • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1-1/4 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped

1. In a microwave, microwave the chocolate, 1/4 cup water and butter until the chocolate and butter are melted; stir until smooth. Col for 10 minutes. 2. In a small heavy saucepan, whisk egg yolks, sugar and remaining water. Cook and stir over medium heat until misture reaches 160 degrees or is thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Remove from the heat; whisk in chocolate misture. 3. Set saucepan in ice and stir until cooled, about 5-10 inutes. Fold in whipped cream. Spoon into dessert dishes. Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.

1. Cream butter and sugar well. Add egg yolks one at a time, mixing well after each. 2. Mix flour and soda and resift together. Add this to creamed mixture together with sour cream, vanilla and almond extract. 3. Beat egg whites and add 1/2 cup sugar while beating until stiff. Add to above mixture and pour in well-greased and floured tube pan or long angel food loaf pan. 4. Bake at 275 degrees for 1-1/2 hours.

Are you a “Procrastinator?” In a few short weeks, we will celebrate important events like my birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas. THEN the ball will drop in the big apple, and 2022 will come bursting on the scene. My rule for the new year:.. No discussion of 2021. I, for one, am ready to put this year in the history books, never to be remembered again!! But, what comes next? Taxes! I don’t think we have had the sweeping tax changes the politicians promised, but then there’s an entire new year to “git it done!”… Maybe for those procrastinators who just filed their taxes in October, it will be a new opportunity to do it early for a change. Of course, I’m so old that I remember preparing taxes without an automatic extension giving you an extra six months to complete your 1040. Back in the “dark ages,” before the internet, TurboTax, and E-file, you prepared your taxes by hand. We then typed the completed numbers on the IRS forms with an IBM Selectric typewriter, but we did have self-correcting tape! There were only requested extensions with a darn good reason, and you worked around the clock for several weeks before April 15th and just got it done or else!!! Oh, how I remember those late rushing trips to the post office to meet the deadline! In those rare instances when you couldn’t complete it, you requested an extension, and even if IRS turned it down, it gave you a few weeks to fudge!! How things have changed! Now, with an automatic extension, procrastinators can wait til October 15th, but, Who does that??!! Follow my blog, SuzieTK Snippets, on Facebook and Word Press, OR, google it. Today, 57% of women in the U.S. participate in the labor force. 1 Yet, despite the fact that 49% of women are the primary breadwinners2 and 52% of women in a relationship are responsible for managing the money in the household, 3fewer women than men hold life insurance policies.4 Your female clients may not know this, but they may actually need life insurance more than men. Let’s review some of the reasons why.

They’re going to live longer

Women’s lifespans are longer than men’s, so there will be a greater likelihood of medical needs as they age. 5Having a policy that accumulates cash value or has a rider for a chronic illness could provide financial support to cover medical bills, caregivers, and living expenses. And your clients might like this: since women generally live longer, life insurance policies for women are less costly than men’s.

They’re business owners

According to recent statistics, 11.6 million U.S. businesses are owned by women. They employ nearly 9 million people and generate more than $1.7 trillion in revenue. 6As more women become entrepreneurs, there needs to be a consideration for what happens to that business if they were suddenly gone. A life insurance policy could help provide money for a buyout if your client was a partner in the business. It can also provide funds for business continuation, business-related debt, company expenses, and payroll.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower BONEFISH BONEFISH BONEFISH Debbie and I went back to Belize last month, and I got another shot at a “Belize Grand Slam,” which is a bonefish, permit, and tarpon in a single day on a fly rod. Well, let’s just say I will have to try again at a future date. The bonefish are not a problem since they are everywhere, and you just have to stalk them like deer. My guide stayed in the boat poling about 50 feet behind me and directed my casts to the bonefish when they weren’t tailing. I caught 25 over three days. Permit are harder to catch since they are so darned picky and fickle. They will move on the flats only when the wind is right, and then there is no predicting which way they will move at any given moment. The best I got was when I stalked and got ahead of a school of about 15 fish, made a perfect 40-foot cast, had two peel off and followed my fly for about five feet acting like they were going to eat and then “poof,” they turned and rejoined the pack swimming off and away—my only opportunity gone in five minutes and one good cast. So that leaves me with a tarpon to add to my disappointment, and they did their job. Every morning we would start out looking for the Silver King, and every morning we were disappointed. I did spot four small tarpon swimming ahead of the boat one morning. We poled behind them for about 100 feet when they swam over a grass patch about 10x20. I made a 45-foot cast to the front of the grass, as that’s the way they should have popped out, but NOOOOOOOO, they teleported out of the grass like Captain Kirk off a hostile planet, never to be seen again. So, “No Grand Slam for you, come back two years!”
