I love the fall season. All of the major holidays that have become such a wonderful part of my life are in the fall. Last month, Halloween came along with pumpkins, candy, fall festivals, and costumes! I loved the photo that my daughter, Miranda Johnson, took of me. She is such a talented photographer and a fabulous leader for Atlanta, Texas. With November coming in, cooler weather and Thanksgiving brings families together. Our holiday season changed almost two years ago when my daughter, Jaclyn Gooding, was accepted into Texas State Trooper Academy. Holidays are workdays for her and my son-in-love, Marshall, so we work around that. We may not have a traditional "Thanksgiving Day." In fact, our Thanksgiving won't be on November 26th this year. But shouldn't we be thankful all year long? Does a specific day really matter? I love my family, and any day we are together, I am thankful. God has been so good to us. Sometimes I complain about bad things happening -- and I will probably do that again. But really, my life has been a good one, and I am very thankful for so many things. So what are a few of those things? Here is the shortlist A roof over my head. My home is such a wonderful, welcoming place to come home to. I have never been a great decorator or cared that it was decorated, to tell you the truth. I just want a wonderful place to relax and enjoy life. Friends and family - life has no meaning without the ability to enjoy it with others. Furry friends - My babies are just that - my babies. I love them with my whole heart. They are my stress relievers (most of the time) and bring such joy! Good health and the air we breathe - our health is definitely something to be thankful for. Since my issues with my trachea and being able to breathe, I understand the importance of the air. When you can't get it into your lungs, it makes you so thankful when you can. Holiday food and traditions - I love holiday food - and I am good at cooking it! I hope to share my recipes this year with one of my kids so that they can cook when I can't anymore. Since I don't have a recipe for many of the dishes I make, it should be an interesting day. Traditions are important, but again, do they have to be on a particular day? Not for us! Time to relax - As the owner of 3 businesses, time to relax is so important. I am so thankful that God has allowed me time to get away from work and travel throughout this wonderful country we live in. The beautiful things in life - what are those? They are different things to different people. Find your "beautiful" and take advantage of what you believe to be those things. Don't stop. We live for only a short time - whether that is 20 years or 100 years. It's still too short. I think about that sometimes. My advice - live your life as if today is your last day. You will be thankful you did. May God bless you and yours.

VIETNAM VETERAN JIMMY CURTNER.

When Jimmy “Slick” Curtner graduated from Texas High in 1968, he knew the world was changing, and he wanted to be a part of it. When he enlisted in the Marines, fresh-faced and “bulletproof,” he had no idea what was in store for him, and he had no idea how much this one decision would change his life. “All I knew was that they were killing 300 Americans a week in Vietnam, and I thought it was time to do my part,” Jimmy says. “I thought, ‘I’m not better than anyone else, and it’s time for me to go.’”
to make you strong and to numb a lot of your feelings so that you would just go and pull the trigger and not think too much about it.”
One cannot measure the impact of this decision. However, Jimmy does say that joining the military was one of the best choices he could have made at that time. “I got kicked out of Texas High my senior year for fighting, and I was your typical stupid kid who thought that I was invincible. I didn’t make good grades either, though the military did teach me a much greater respect for education,” Jimmy says. “But, if my teenage years were any indication, I probably would have been dead or in prison if I didn’t join the Marines. It really turned my life around.”
Though many veterans do not like talking about war experiences, Jimmy was eager to share some of the moments that exemplified his time there so that others can begin to understand what Vietnam vets went through. When he returned to the United States’ soil in 1970, he wasn’t greeted with parades and grateful crowds. Instead, words like “rapist,” “baby killer,” and “drug head” were aimed at the returning military, an indicator of the political climate of that time. Jimmy says it was years before he would even wear an insignia or cap or any sign that he had been in Vietnam. “Troops get treated better nowadays, and I’m glad they do,” Jimmy says. “I think that 9-11 is when things turned around for the military. All of a sudden, even though we were in the midst of this horrible event, the country came together to fight a common enemy. I think the same thing happened after Pearl Harbor, but then, we forget about it and move on. My sister asked me recently what I wish people understood about Vietnam. My only answer is that I guess we just wanted someone to be proud of us.”
Though Jimmy had an uncle who was a part of the Bataan Death March in World War II, the choice did not please Jimmy’s dad, Jesse Curtner. However, Jimmy’s mom, Dorothy Scott, married to retired Navy vet, Walter Scott, understood the appeal. Armed with some insider knowledge about basic training from his brother, who was also a Marine, Jimmy headed off to war. The plane ride to San Diego felt like a vacation, but when he landed, he said life as he knew it ceased to exist. “Have you ever seen Full Metal Jacket? Well, that depiction of boot camp is as close to the real thing as you can get,” Jimmy says. “There was a sign over my drill sergeant’s quarters that said, ‘The more you sweat here, the less you bleed there,’ and it was true. The transformation was difficult at first. But, the time in San Diego taught Jimmy discipline, perseverance, determination, and skill. “Boot camp was mentally hard, but I was mentally and physically strong,” Jimmy says. “But, when I got overseas, I was scared to death, and anyone who tells you they weren’t is just lying.”
From the moment he put boots on the ground in Vietnam in April of 1969, Jimmy was bombarded with strange sights, smells, and tactics. Only a few weeks after arrival, Jimmy’s troop was overrun in the middle of the night. He could hear the shells coming in, and a man started yelling for everyone to get out of the hutches and into the dirt. 011
This man was Sergeant Gary Brackmeier, the man that Jimmy credits for his life today. “He is the single most inspirational person of my whole life,” Jimmy says. “He taught me what to look for, where to step, how to find booby traps, how to listen, how to sleep lightly, how to walk lightly. He changed my life, and he saved my life.” Once they were on foreign soil, it became harder to grasp the bigger picture of why they were there. “One of the biggest lessons the military taught me was to pick your friends wisely, on one hand. Then, you may have two or three that you can really trust with your own life,” Jimmy says. “Over there, it became harder to think about fighting for God, corp, and country. One day, in an attack, Gary says that we have to be here for each other. We have to watch out for each other. He was my lifeline.”
gunships and helicopters would take them out if they tried to mass in the open, but at night, they would wake you up and fight,” Jimmy says. “So every day, it was the daily grind of search and destroy. Every night, we would wait in a bunker. Sometimes they came, and sometimes they didn’t. Some days you wouldn’t see anything, and some days you would. You just never knew.” Everyone took two hours shifts to look out or sleep, but Jimmy says that it was impossible to sleep with the mosquitos. “Rain, monsoons, bugs, ants, snakes... Vietnam was a hell hole. When I hear people gripe about our country today, I always wish that they could go get a dose of socialism or communism in other countries,” Jimmy says, “We take too much for granted here. When I was working as a substitute teacher for Texarkana ISD, the big complaint among teenagers was about losing a cell phone or getting lunch detention, but there are kids in a hole somewhere cleaning an AK-47. Our kids have a good life and just don’t know it.” Jimmy and Gary participated in four combat missions while in Vietnam: Arizona Territory, Oklahoma Hills, Pipestone Canyon, and the Tet Counteroffensive. Jimmy says that Gary would jump into a tunnel with a flashlight and a .45, but Jimmy never could get over the claustrophobia. “Their biggest advantage was the tunnels,” Jimmy says, “You could be right over them and not know it. One night, several got underneath our hutches and had set up booby traps and satchel charges, and we had to dig them out. Gary says to me, ‘Don’t hold a flashlight,’ and I think that saved my life that night.”

Jimmy says that the North Vietnamese troops were brutal. Brutal to the point that even today, Jimmy always feels a little uneasy about strangers. When people get close to him, Jimmy watches their hands and eyes. “I thought this feeling would go away, but honestly, I find myself falling back on my military background because of the world we live in today. The Marines taught me to stay alert. I walk every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and let me tell you, there are no ‘safe places,’ just some places that are safer than others. I always have a .45 in my holster, and a .38 on my ankle,” Jimmy says. “Now, I know that just like all Islamic people are not terrorists, all Vietnamese were not that way, but at that time, they hated anything Westernized. They hated Americans.”
Gary got out of Vietnam in 1969. But, Jimmy never lost sight of the lessons Gary taught him. When Jimmy returned to American soil, he searched for Gary. He joined social media, an avenue that many veterans use to find military friends and colleagues, but it took over 50 years to find Gary. “A lieutenant colonel, who knew I was looking for Gary, emailed me and told me that he found him working for Blackwater, a private military contractor. I finally reached Gary, and he told me that when he retired and came home, we could get together. We met up in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee,” Jimmy says, “The moment I got off the plane, I recognized him, even after 50 years.”
Jimmy was a part of Kilo Company 3rd Battalion First Marines. They took turns working in motor transport, headquarters company, and patrol. Most of their patrol job was to track troop movements and go into villages to find weapons, ammunition, medical supplies, and stores of food. “We would find all of this packed in the ground or in tunnels, and we would destroy it to try to weaken their supply chain. During the day, the Vietnamese would work in the fields and farms because
The men’s shared experience manifests itself in Jimmy’s continued gratefulness for Gary and his influence on his life. He insists that Gary is the greatest Marine he has ever seen or known. In the week they spent together talking, laughing, and catching up, Gary showed Jimmy around the rural, military compound that he built himself filled with supplies, ammunition, weapons, and even whiskey to last for quite a while. “I think that a lot of veterans become preppers because we all recognize A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 0
signs that we fear are pointing to a socialist political environment,” Jimmy says. “We know what that is like up close.” When Jimmy returned to the United States in September of 1970, he had become an E5 Sergeant in 20 months, but he couldn’t drink legally. He remembers that his mother said, “You may be 20, but we are going out for a beer.” Jimmy wanted to make a career out of the military, but marriage and family kept him home. He was married twice and had two daughters: Susan and Stephanie. However, no matter how Jimmy tried to distance himself from the war publicly, the lessons he learned from those years stuck with him. “The Marines taught me discipline, respect, and how to deal with situations that ordinary people cannot manage. They also taught me to respect and serve God, the corp, country, and family, and it changed me,” Jimmy says. “I’ve carried these beliefs with me all my life.” Jimmy used his G.I. Bill to attend Texarkana College and earn his associate’s degree. Still, he didn’t finish his bachelor’s until 2006 when a coach at Liberty-Eylau promised him a job if he went back to complete his degree. Jimmy enrolled at Texas A&M University Texarkana to finish his degree in education so that he could teach social studies and coach. “It was really hard to go back to school after all that time,” Jimmy says, “When I wanted to walk out, the military voice inside me said, ‘Never quit.’ That may sound silly, but that’s just one way that my whole belief system was changed. I graduated from A&M with a 3.8 and LeTourneau University with a 4.0” Because his daughter, Stephanie, had played softball and enjoyed it, Jimmy also loved the sport. He worked as an assistant softball coach and middle school football coach from 2006-2010 at Redwater ISD. He also worked as an in-school suspension (ISS) teacher, a job that he gained from his military background. “I think they looked at my resume and said, ‘Well, I bet he can handle those kids,’ and I did,” Jimmy says. “In all my years in education, I never once greeted a student with anything but ‘ma’am’ or ‘sir.’ I showed students respect, and I hoped some of that would make it home, but I also held the line. After teaching and coaching in Redwater, Jimmy was 60 years old and not really looking for a full time teaching position, so he began to substitute teach for Texarkana ISD and stayed there for eight years. In that time, Jimmy learned a lot about the issues facing teaching today. “The problems with our kids start at home. If parents don’t start disciplining at a young age, by the time they reach middle and high school, it’s a little late,” Jimmy says. “Honestly, disciplined kids are much more successful than undisciplined kids, so it’s better for them in the long run. I’m sure some of the kids may not have liked me, but they respected me. I know that I did the right thing for those kids.” Though Jimmy isn’t substitute teaching anymore, he is still teaching kids on the softball field. He coaches softball for girls of all ages. “I’ve had girls get full rides to play softball in college, and some go on to be really successful,” Jimmy says. “The kids are a joy to work with. I find myself being a second father at times. Many parents say that they can’t get their teenager to listen, and they ask me to talk to them. I also bring in some college girls that I’ve taught previously to show the girls what they could be. Coaching is just a rewarding thing for me.” Recently, one of Jimmy’s three grandchildren decided to join the Navy. Jimmy did not discourage it. In fact, he

encouraged it. He believes that the military helps teach respect and discipline. It helps a “punk kid” grow up. However, would Jimmy go back to 1968 and still enlist if he knew what he knows now? “I don’t regret my time in the military. Would I go back to Vietnam? Well, I’d only go if we were given the proper support to actually win the war. For our era, the war was paid for not so much in dollars, but with the blood of our youth and the loss of innocence,” Jimmy says. “After the Watergate years, when Ford came into the presidency, he cut the supply lines to South Vietnam by 75%. The military didn’t lose the war; the government did. You cannot handcuff someone in a fight and expect them to win. If you aren’t there to win, don’t send troops. But, there’s no military power on the planet that could stand with the U.S. military if its might is turned loose.” No matter what, Jimmy remains staunchly patriotic. Does he feel like the troops were treated poorly both during and after the Vietnam War? Absolutely. But does he love this country in spite of her faults? Without a doubt. Jimmy says this also knowing that he has had longstanding physical impairments due to the war. He’s been diagnosed with Agent Orange and PTSD, a diagnosis that came from a doctor friend who had to wake Jimmy up in surgery after he started on an anesthesiafilled rampage. “People have a misconception about PTSD. They think you are crazy, but that’s not true,” Jimmy says. “But, and I’m not sure how to explain this, sometimes I was there 50 years ago, and sometimes I was there two weeks ago. It’s all about the things that trigger you.” Unfortunately, like many veterans, Jimmy was denied services for Agent Orange and PTSD even though he knew that something wasn’t right. surgery and four bypasses in March of 2018 that VA recognized his Agent Orange diagnosis, and it was only after the high school friend and doctor reported what he saw while Jimmy was under anesthesia that he was granted services for PTSD. “I think that a lot of people would say that the VA’s view for many years has been ‘Deny and sooner or later they will die.’ However, Trump has really done a lot for veterans in this country,” Jimmy says. “It’s better now than it’s been at any other time in history. Now, I can visit any hospital and not just a VA hospital.” The Jimmy Curtner today is a product of all of his experiences: Marine, survivor, husband, father, coach, teacher, friend, veteran. Today he speaks for all veterans in this country, sharing the trials of what it means to fight for “the home of the free and the brave,” and he remains hopeful that stories like his will help veterans receive the recognition, the thanks, the dignity they deserve. “A few weeks ago, I went to Hope, Arkansas, to watch a softball game that some of my girls were playing in,” Jimmy says. “A coach there came up to me. I didn’t know him, but he thanked me for my service. It reminded me of how far we’ve come since 1970. I’m just one of the many who loved his country then and who loves his country now. For the ones who fought and died for it, freedom has a taste that the protected will never know. We are old men now, and soon we will be just a forgotten memory of what we once were. We were Marines.”

Dustin and Victoria Atwood September 5, 2020
Dustin and Victoria met because her best friend, Blair, and her husband had moved from Arkansas to Illinois, where they met Dustin. After Victoria graduated from college, she decided to move in with them, and they introduced Dustin to Victoria. They instantly hit it off and had their first date at the Art Institute of Chicago. They dated for a little over a year, and in March of 2019, they went back to Chicago to celebrate Victoria’s birthday and their first anniversary. Their first stop was at the Art Institute, and while they were there, Dustin proposed. Victoria was shocked because the entire time, he had not said a single word and acted very uninterested in the exhibits. It turns out he was busy trying to hide a ring and looking for the perfect moment! After that, the day feels a bit like a blur, but they do know they went for sushi and saw a comedy show. 036

Ashley Michelle Comer, of Nash, Texas, and Brady Michael Cooper, of Nash, Texas, are pleased to announce their engagement with ALT Magazine! Ashley, 30, is the daughter of Michael Comer and Susan Giles, and Brady, 25, is the son of Richard and Tracie Cooper. Ashley graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a major in Psychology. She is currently a police officer. Brady graduated from Texarkana College with a degree in Criminal Justice and is a sheriff's deputy. Their expected wedding will occur in May 2021, at the Cooper Family Home with B.C. Bowers officiating. The couple plans to reside in Nash, Texas. A look into their engagement: Ashley and Brady have been best friends for several years. After finally deciding to date and dating for over a year, they decided that they wanted to spend their lives together. Brady secretly bought a beautiful ring, and after hinting for several weeks, he surprised Ashley by popping the question! Brady was barely able to ask before Ashley screamed, "Yes!" 038

Ryan and Brooklyn Deramus August 15, 2020
Brooklyn and Ryan met when they were teenagers at church camp. They fell in love early in life and have been inseparable since. They always talked about their plans in life, and marriage was more a question of when than if. After a romantic dinner in Hot Springs, Ryan proposed at the Grand Promenade on August 30, 2018. They stayed engaged for two years until they had their wonderful union at Garrison Gardens. 040

It was special because... Brooklyn- My wedding day was the best day of my life. I knew my parents, aunts, and the Guilbert’s had everything under control for a perfect ceremony and reception. All I had to do was spend the day getting ready with my beautiful bridesmaids. From walking down the aisle with my father to the end of the night with our sendoff at the bridge, I felt like I was in a fairytale. My loved ones made the whole evening so special. Not only did I get to marry my best friend, but in doing so, I also gained another wonderful family. I am so blessed to have these sensational photos of our wedding day in this truly breathtaking garden venue. Ryan- Being able to celebrate this day with close family and friends was the most special feeling. During these crazy times, we were worried that we would have to cancel the wedding or push it back even further than we originally chose to. We believe that memories are best when they are shared with the people you love, and this wedding would not have been as special to us without the love and support of all our loved ones being around us. It was such a surreal experience that we will look back at and cherish forever.

It was special because...
The Wedding Day: Other than Abby and Andy being able to marry one another on such a special and significant day, September 5, 2020, was a day to remember forever. Abby and Andy were able to create a happy ending to an emotional week after losing Andy’s grandfather just a few days before. It was an amazing feeling knowing that they were marrying at the place that was so special to Abby’s uncle Stevie and that her Aunt Janis remained so strong and determined to see it through. So many members of their family came together to make Abby and Andy’s wedding day one of the best days ever with the pouring of love and sentiment. To tell all the reasons this day was so special to Abby and Andy would require writing a book. Abby was blessed to have her aunt Angie put all of her amazing talents to work and put a miraculous look on the already beautiful barn. Abby’s uncle built the most uniquely beautiful arch. Another uncle of Abby’s joined the two in marriage. All of their family came together to make their day so special, including their parents, aunts and uncles, siblings and cousins, and some awesome friends! They could not have asked for a better day of spending time with so many people dear to their hearts and surrounded by so much joy. Each person that put into to their special day could never be thanked enough. Abby and Andy met on the Saturday night of Labor Day weekend in 2010. Abby was a sophomore, and Andy was a senior. Abby was visiting Spring Hill for the weekend, where she joined her sister, Tori. Abby and her sister visited a popular residence there in little ole Spring Hill, Arkansas. They joined others to stand around a bonfire and listen to stories that mostly involved the “boys of fall” jabbering about the sport they loved, football. Little did Abby and Andy know, that night was the start of a love story to last a lifetime. Andy was an active participant in the communicating that went on. Abby kept quiet for the most part and remained observant. Abby stayed near Tori, where she developed an eye for the sweet and soft-spoken guy across the fire. Abby finally asked her sister, “who is he?” and Tori responded with, “that’s Andy Powell.” With the fire blazing between the two of them, Abby listened as Andy spoke and kept an eye on him. The time eventually came that Abby and her sister needed to head back home. At the time, Andy would have sat alone around the fire until his friends returned. Abby, being who she is, did not think he ought to sit alone, so she suggested he join the crew taking the girls home. Abby went on in and began the famous Facebook creep. She found Andy Powell on Facebook, feeling anxious as she hovered over the “add friend” option. Sometime later that night/early morning, Andy messaged Abby through Facebook. That morning Abby was shocked to see the message. The two of them engaged in small talk, and it was not long before they exchanged phone numbers. Abby and Andy talked here and there ever so often. Once Abby asked Andy, “what kind of life do you live?” Andy was almost startled and didn’t know how to answer. He responded with, “a good one, I guess.” Abby then replied with, “mine’s crazy.” Somehow or another, that conversation forever impacted Andy. Andy and Abby maintained a relationship for a couple of years, where they referred to one another as homies. Some folks might not have ever understood the relationship between Abby and Andy, but they knew what they felt, and they knew the bond that was being built could never be broken. It was in 2012 that they decided to become Facebook official. A few months later, they were introduced to the little miracle, Abby and Tori’s baby sister they believe changed their life for all the better. From then on, fully trusting in the Lord, Andy and Abby put all that good and crazy together and built their life together. Over the years, they loved and laughed together, experienced pain and joy together, and took on whatever life had to offer. Fast forward to 2020; tragedy struck Abby’s family when her uncle passed away suddenly due to a farm accident. Abby’s aunt and uncle were in the process of remodeling their historical horse barn into a wedding and event venue at the time. Just over a month later, some of Abby’s family had a discussion about how they would love for Abby and Andy to be the first wedding at The Barn at Willow Oak Acres. When Abby was told the date that they were all thinking, she was surprised and knew it would be perfect! In just three months Abby and Andy would marry on the very weekend they met ten years prior! Andy was so thankful for the opportunity to finally share his granny’s heirloom, her wedding ring. Andy’s granny had lost her battle to cancer back in 2017, and he had been holding on to her ring for an opportunity to give it to Abby. The funny thing is, the actual engagement happened during an engagement photo session with Debbie Brower. Morgan Ashley Hackleman, of Texarkana, Texas, and Darren Michael Thompson, of Spring Hill, Arkansas, are pleased to announce their engagement with ALT Magazine! Morgan, 20, is the daughter of Joe and Traci Hackleman, and Darren, 21, is the son of Rhett and Brandi Thompson. Morgan graduated from Redwater High School and has attended Texarkana College. She is currently a superintendent for Total General Contracting and is a real estate developer. Darren graduated from Texas High School and is currently attending Southern Arkansas University, majoring in Engineering, while working at Cooper Tire & Rubber Company in Texarkana, Arkansas. Their expected wedding date is January 23, 2021, at The Hidden Willow with Jimmy White and Darren Littleton officiating. The couple plans to reside in Texarkana, Arkansas. A look into their engagement: Darren knew that Morgan’s family meant everything to her, so he waited for Christmas Day to arrive, and after everyone had eaten, Darren snuck away to get the ring. When he came back, he grabbed Morgan’s hand and had her follow him to the center of her grandmother’s living room (in front of all her family!), dropped on one knee, and asked her to marry him. Morgan was so shocked she had no words, but after what felt like an eternity, she said YES! 046

Sustainable investing: What the buzz is about
What it is, why it’s growing and three ways you can align your investments with your values Stroll any grocery store and you’ll find goods that signal their sustainability, from fair-trade chocolate to organic coffee. That same wave of sustainability is becoming commonplace in investing, too, with a variety of portfolios to choose from under many different names. Let’s sort through some of the motivations for this method of investing, and how each one stacks neatly into one of three main sustainable investing strategies. BALANCING GROWTH AND VALUES If you want to invest in companies that are trying to make the world a better place, and want competitive returns, look into ESG. Investments with an ESG integration approach consider environmental, social and governance data alongside traditional risk and return metrics. The ESG data may include how well a company is managing environmental factors like pollution and energy efficiency, social factors like data security and labor standards, and governance factors like board diversity and business ethics. The idea is to create a portfolio weighted toward companies with leaders who are skilled at managing these issues, which in turn may lessen financial risks such as fines and reputational damage. The ESG data is integrated into the investment process. Do well-governed companies with high ESG ratings actually give investors an advantage? An analysis by Morningstar showed sustainable funds in the U.S. outperformed the broader market during a market correction in February 2018, and an analysis of 2,200 studies published in the Journal of Sustainable Finance & Investment showed material ESG factors had a positive or neutral impact on stock performance. It’s little wonder that this approach is gaining popularity as the data gets more sophisticated – and more compelling. PRIORITIZING PRINCIPLES If you want to avoid investments that don’t align with your values or standards, you’re likely a fit for an exclusionary or “negative” screening approach to sustainable investing. This “do no harm” strategy traces back to Quakers in the 18th century who refused to invest in the slave trade, and was later seen when U.S. investors moved money out of South African apartheidsupporting businesses. Today, investors may choose to avoid tobacco producers, natural resource extractors, or major companies that lack diverse leadership. 050

What happens when you aren’t 30 anymore… I’m going to vent just a bit. For the last year, I have not fished any organized derbies. I am not happy about it, but I had to give my arms time to heal a bit. In 2017 I was practicing for a BFL Regional on Lake Dardanelle, since I didn’t fish the Arkie Division that year. I didn’t know about a new sand bar up the river around Cabin Creek. Well, I ran aground and it was so shallow my Z520 tilted slightly to one side. I called a couple of friends who said they could come help, but it would be a couple of hours before they could get to me. Since I didn’t want to just wait on them, I got out and started to help myself. I could pick the back up just enough to move the boat about 2 inches at a time. Deeper water was about 80 feet away and I moved my boat there two inches at a time. After I got free, I realized my arms were not working real well and I couldn’t pick anything up for the next two days and had to cast using both hands. They healed somewhat and I fished in 2018 and 2019, but they still hurt. I decided to take 2020 off to try to let them heal some more. There is a medical term for what I did and I can’t pronounce it much less spell it, but in order for them to heal, I really needed to stop aggravating the problem, hence taking a year off. The moral to this story is “wait for help.” Something I learned the hard way. As my wife tells me all the time, “You are not 30 anymore”.

You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary. •We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers. One box has been placed behind the Bi State Justice Building at 100 N. State Line Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas and another outside the Texarkana Emergency Center, 4646 Cowhorn Creek Rd., Texarkana, Texas. These boxes are regularly checked and the contents are immediately packaged for destruction. If you would like to personally drop your medications off to law enforcement, you can at the Miller County Sheriff’s Office on East Street and Bi State Justice Building in Texarkana.
