With the temperatures starting to cool down (hopefully), and football in the air, we all know that school is back in full swing. I can remember being so excited about going back to school after summer came to an end. I loved school and loved learning; I could NOT wait to return! I have always been a tomboy. I am hard pressed to make myself put on make-up if I know I won't run into anyone that knows me – except for Mike, of course, who tells me I am beautiful no matter what! (He obviously is smitten! LOL). Anyway, when I was young, I loved being outdoors. I think kids now miss so much by staying in their homes and not playing outside. We would play until dark, when our mom would come out yelling for us to come from whatever parts of the woods we happened to be playing in. We would build forts, skate down the hill in front of our house, find all the neighborhood kids and have “wars”, hang from the top of the swing set, or just hang out together. We mostly were outside enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. In the second grade, I was riding my bike around the neighborhood when I hit a gravel spot in the road. As I slid across the road, I thought nothing of it. I had wrecked before and all was well. This time wasn’t quite the same. When I looked down at my mangled foot, I knew it wasn’t like before. Of course, I jumped back on my bike and started home, leaving a trail of blood as I went down the street. A neighbor saw my plight and offered to take me in her car, but I didn’t know her well enough for that so onward I went.
After a visit to the ER, I was told I had to stay off the foot for at least a week, possibly two. I was devastated! How could I miss a week of school? After the initial week of laying around – remember I’m 7 years old – I was adamant that I didn’t care what the doctor said. I was going to school! Well, my mom was adamant that I wasn’t until the doctor approved it. However, I was so adamant that we made a daily trek to the doctor’s office to see if he would approve it. Mom would pack my lunch, just in case, and off we would go. Several days and visits went by and I returned home to eat my packed lunch there, until finally, at the end of 2 weeks, I got the okay! Elation filled my body as I strode back into the school hallways. I will never forget it. It is indicative of my love of education to this day. I believe that education provides more than just classes and grades. It gives students a sense of accomplishment that can’t be taken away. Whether you are a nerd, like me, or the class favorite, excelling in something is possible. As everyone returns to school this year, remember that there are some who love it and some who don’t. For those who do, encourage that love. For those who don’t, find something they love about it – surely there’s at least one thing – and help them do it! They will always remember what you did to encourage them. Education will help them succeed in life – whether as a child or an adult. So many things are learned while in school – not just course material and that learning should never end. Mine hasn’t. May God bless you and yours…

cannot imagine what those parents must be feeling as their students drive off to their last year at high school. Even in my hallway, other teachers smiled so that no one would know how heavily that morning drop-off was weighing on their mind. One teacher friend took her son to the sixth grade, one dropped her kids off at a new elementary school, and one sent her son to college. Most of the teachers I know are parents as well. They know how hard it is to send their children off to a whole new school with people they do not know. They worry if they are making the right decision by teaching other people’s
children and not staying home with their own kids. However, you would never know. Teachers are masters of showing love to others even on their toughest days. They get excited about the names on their roster, they shake hands, give hugs, and stop and talk to previous students. They light up when students are in the room. They put the worries and cares of daily life aside so that they can give their full attention to the students in their room that need them. I know because I have done it, and I have seen it.
already trying to learn their name. These teachers will spend all year trying to get to know these students and help them feel and be successful. The students will be joy and light into the lives of these teachers, and teachers will be different because of the experiences they have with the students over the year. As a mother and a teacher, I see this partnership between parent, teacher, and student so differently. We all want the best for our kids.
The parents prepare and pray We all grieve for their children as they leave at how fast them with the teachers who are they grow up.
We all worry about our kids and the changes they face every year. We all celebrate their successes. Despite the happiness, the fears, and the tears, when the school doors close and the bell rings, we are all in this together.

Most valued role model and why: Jose Altuve because he is a positive and great athlete. Most valuable lesson learned: Hard work pays off. What material possession can you not live without: Shoes, I can’t stand to go barefoot.
Easton loves baseball, hunting, fishing, football and dance. Though he likes fishing and hunting as a source of relaxation, one of Easton’s biggest passions is dance. In fact, he believes what makes him unique is the fact that he is a boy dancer. One of his biggest accomplishments was making the ALT magazine cover a few years ago for his dance skills. Recently, Easton’s funniest moment happened while dancing. His new dance solo had a lot of funny parts in it that he found surprising. Easton is the son of James and Emily Bright, and his most unexpected moment was finding out he was going to have a baby sister! At Redlick, Easton is involved in student council. He plans to attend Texas High School, and then attend University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. His secret wish is to become an engineer.

In a classroom, often upwards of 30 students each period all day long, each student requires something different from me. I have learned that patience helps me keep calm when they all need something different at the same time.”
Melissa Knowles teaches Spanish at Redwater ISD. This coming year is her eleventh year in education, and she has taught levels 1-5 of Spanish and Spanish for Native Speakers. “I have loved building relationships with reluctant students and seeing them own their own education,” Melissa says. “In five years, I hope to be sharing my love of Spanish with my own children while still encouraging our Redwater Dragons to become bilingual. As UIL Academic Coordinator, I also hope to see Team Redwater establish a tradition of advancing to state level competition.”
One goal Melissa has for her classroom this year is to incorporate more technology into the classroom. This past summer, Melissa worked hard to search out apps and extensions that will benefit the learning environment for her students. “Today’s students have a plethora of information at their fingertips in an instant,” Melissa says. “We must teach them how to transform that information into knowledge that will make a difference.” When she isn’t teaching, Melissa loves to travel and learn languages. “I make an effort to learn a few phrases in other languages whenever I meet people from other language groups. I am currently making an effort to learn American Sign Language,” Melissa says. What are you currently reading for enjoyment? completing the program, he wants to further his education toward a master’s degree. “In five years I see myself teaching children with intellectual disabilities at the elementary level,” David says. “I think one of the greatest challenges facing students today is figuring out their individual education plan to guide them to being a successful learner.” When he is not at school or work, David loves to live life on the ranch with his partner, Kyle Barrett. “We travel and I compete in barrel races, we ride the Ranger to check cows, and we love spending time with our friends and family,” David says. “One of my biggest weaknesses is overloading my work load. I’m slowly working on that by doing what I love more and making more time for myself, my friends, and my family.” David Thomas wants to help kids with intellectual disabilities by becoming a special education teacher. Through the years, he has taught summer reading programs, and currently works at CASA, where he has had the opportunity to mentor children that are placed in the foster system. “Through experience I’ve found that just being there for children and gaining their trust allows them to open up which provides more opportunities to better their life and at their pace,” David says. “My philosophy of education is to always lead with love. Every person and situation grants the opportunity to show compassion and kindness. Much of my life has been advocating for children because each child has the right to be safe, the right to learn and the right to laugh.” David graduated from Greenbrier West High School in Charmco, West Virginia, in 2008. After taking a six year break from college, he transferred from Fairmont State University in the spring of 2018 and was accepted at Texas A&M University - Texarkana. He will graduate with a BAAS degree in December of 2018 and plans to get his alternative teaching certification through Texas A&M University Texarkana to teach special education. After

Current reading material: I am currently reading Teenagers Preparing for the Real World by Chad Foster. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. What five adjectives describe you best? I would have to say persistent, perfectionist, respectful, patient and teacher, of course. What do you consider to be your greatest success at teaching or mentoring? I would say it was when I worked with a man with Down Syndrome. I was able to teach him daily living skills that helped him mature to be able to live independently. How would you take advantage of resources within the community to enhance your teaching? I would maintain a good relationship with the sources in the community and stay up to date with the sources available so that I would always be able to help the families and the children in need.

Senioritis? Maybe there’s more… There are hundreds of books, movies, and TV shows that portray senior year as a time of independence and growth. It’s true that once you hit senior year, you’re no longer a small fish in a big pond. As a senior, you’re a campus leader—it’s your responsibility to show underclassmen the ropes. Three years of high school have made you an expert on all things secondary education, but you may not know what to expect. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of things to expect. 1. Stressing out over your college applications and feeling like everyone else is getting into their college of choice—early decision, of course. 2. Lots of fancy gifts embossed with “Class of 2019". 3. Envelopes full of graduation money from mysterious, long-lost relatives. 4. Regularly getting five hours of sleep on school nights… 5.…but not just because you’ve actually been studying/working/applying to college. Netflix, anyone? 6. That one person at school constantly keeping tabs on your class’ last Homecoming, last Chemistry lab, last first day of high school, last cafeteria hot dog… 7. Your neighbor asking you where you’re going to college (even though you clearly don’t know yet) while watering the plants in his driveway. 8. Finishing all of the college applications that seemed so daunting to you at the beginning of the summer. 9. Making new friendships, and strengthening old ones. 10. Your grandmother asking you where you’re going to college (even though you clearly don’t know yet) whenever she comes to visit. 11. Feeling overwhelmed, sad, and lonely at times. 12. Feeling overjoyed, happy, and social at times. 13. A few college rejections, deferrals, and waitlists that will feel like the end of the world when you receive them. 14. A few college acceptances that will make you feel like you’re on top of the world when you receive them. 15. Going to prom and realizing that it’s nothing like the movies – but still so much fun. 16. Not knowing which college to send your deposit to mere hours before the May 1st deadline. 17. Imparting your senior wisdom to the underclassmen who look up to you. 18. Feeling like you look absolutely ridiculous in your cap and gown. 19. A few teary goodbyes to the high school teachers you loved. 20. The immense feeling of relief you get when you toss your graduation cap. Your senior year of high school will probably be one of the busiest years of your life. For most students, this is the last year they’ll have to spend with the classmates and teachers that have deeply impacted their lives. Just remember to make as many memories as possible during your senior year—those memories and moments are the greatest high school souvenirs you can bring with you to college and beyond!

Hope Elizabeth Estes Parents: Dustin and Sara Estes Hobbies: hunting, shopping, swimming, working out, certified lifeguard School Activities: cheerleading, golf, Key Club, current Miss Redwater Plans for College (degree, school, etc.): I plan to attend Tyler Junior College and enter their 4-year/bachelor’s degree program to become a Dental Hygienist. Most valued role model and why: My Nana and Grandma are my role models. They have both played a huge part of who I am today. They have overcome huge trials in their lives and still maintain a strong faith in God. I am blessed that they both live close by and are always and have always been there when I need them! Most valuable lesson learned: Always be kind to everyone because you never know what is going on in their life. How do you relax: I take a ride in my truck alone and listen to music. If you could meet anyone in the world (living or not) who would it be and what would you say to them? I would meet my deceased grandfather (paternal). He passed away due to a car accident when my dad was 17. By all of the stories I have heard, he was a great man. I also think we are a lot alike and would have enjoyed each other. I would tell him how much everyone misses him! If you could give $50,000 to any charity in the world, which one would it be and why? Right now I would donate money to form a scholarship or to a scholarship program. I have realized how stressful it is to prepare for college. A lack of money should not be the reason someone does not get to reach their dreams. What are three words that describe you best? bubbly, outgoing, determined. Most unexpected moment: I did not make the cheer squad in middle school and was devastated. I worked hard and tried out my 8th grade year for a position on the high school squad. When results were posted, my friends called to tell me that I not only made it, I was one of the first freshmen to make varsity. Hard work DOES pay off! Biggest Accomplishment: This summer I trained and became a certified lifeguard. This led to my first job. I have learned that I have the ability to set goals and take the steps necessary to reach them. I look forward to meeting more goals as I move toward college and a career. What makes you unique and special: I always want to make people feel included. I always smile and try to make others feel loved. When others are having a hard time, I usually try to help them work things out. My parents also say I have never met a stranger. My mom tells me starting around age 3, I would tell waiters/waitresses my life story! Secret Wish: My wish is to follow through with my goals/plans. I want to have a family and set a good example for my children by working hard and staying faithful to God.

Parents: Scott and Stephanie Maddox
Hobbies: dance, singing, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and watching Netflix School Activities: Drill Team, Keyettes, and yearbook Plans for College (degree, school, etc.): Attend the University of Arkansas and major in Computer Science. Most valued role model and why: My mother because she does so much for me and our family and I wouldn’t be here without her. Most valuable lesson learned: You aren’t perfect and that the mistakes you make, are what make you who you are, make you stronger, and teach you what to do for the next time. How do you relax: Singing. I have been taking voice lessons from a wonderful teacher for the past 6 years. She has really helped me increase the strength and range of my voice. If you could meet anyone in the world (living or not) who would it be and what would you say to them? I would meet Sam Smith, mainly because he is so genuine and I would ask him how he is so confident in himself even though some people may not like how he lives his life. If you could give $50,000 to any charity in the world, which one would it be and why? I would give it to a charity called Freedom From Fear. It helps people who suffer from anxiety and depression. The reason is because I personally have gone through this and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone and for the people going through it right now I would want to help in every way I can for them to get the help they needed. What are three words that describe you best? adventurous, frank, organized Most unexpected moment: Winning the top Algebra award for the school year in 9th grade. I had always struggled with math in elementary school, but after years of tutoring and great teachers I all of a sudden “got it." It’s now my favorite subject. Biggest Accomplishment: Singing in front of 1,000 people. What makes you unique and special: My mother was 40 when I was born. I was not only born into my family of Mom, Dad, and two brothers, that also included all of my brothers’ friends. There were ALWAYS boys at my house growing up, and when they came over, I literally thought they were there to play with me! Right now, I can count 8 30-something men that would all claim to be a big brother! I was so precocious, and I know I bugged them to death, but I also loved them all and them me! My mom laughs all the time that I will have a harder time bringing a boy home to meet “the boys" than my own parents! Secret Wish: I wish I could sing in the Grand Ole Opry. Most valuable lesson learned: LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER! Sometimes I don’t give my mom enough credit. In the times when I thought her advice was stupid and didn’t listen to her‌well let's just say, I should have. My brother, Matthew, always tells me I will look back and think, “Wow, Mom was right!â€? (But I can’t let her think she’s right about everythingđ&#x;˜‰!)

Hobbies: softball, volleyball, and track School Activities: Student Council, National Honor Society, class officer, FCA, and athletics Plans for College (degree, school, etc.): University of Texas at Tyler to play softball. Degree: Undecided but related to health care. Most valued role model and why: Sadie Robertson because she is not afraid to speak up for what she believes in and she doesn’t back down to hateful comments. She lives for the Lord and gives others courage to do the same. Most valuable lesson learned: There is no way we can be perfect in life. We will always have times where we will do something wrong or mess up in some way and what matters the most is how we come back from those situations and how we use them to grow. How do you relax: My favorite way to relax would be to do yoga or to go for a bike ride. If you could meet anyone in the world (living or not) who would it be and what would you say to them?: I would want to meet Tim Tebow because he is true to himself even when people were wanting him to hide his faith. I would thank him for being courageous and standing up when others felt like they couldn’t. I would also thank him for being an inspiration and for all his charity work that he is involved in. I would ask him if he has any advice for me on how to balance sports and God and how to show others God’s grace by doing what I love. If you could give $50,000 to any charity in the world, which one would it be and why? I would give to Compassion International because they help sponsor kids in other countries who are less fortunate. Through Compassion kids are able to learn about God who might not have been able to otherwise. What are three words to describe you best: athletic, fierce, and determined. Funniest moment: I was playing t-ball with my older sister and I made it to second base when she was up to bat. When she hit the ball right past me I decided to stop running the bases and instead, run for the ball. Biggest Accomplishment: I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment is being able to continue my softball career through college at the University of Texas at Tyler. What makes you unique and special: I think what makes me unique and special is that I have a positive outlook on things and on life. I always try to see the best in people and I try to see the positive in all situations. Secret Wish: I secretly wish that I could go back to freshman year and relive high school all over again. Through that experience I would be able to do more and make the most of my time in New Boston before I go to Tyler for college. I would spend more time with friends, participate in more school activities, and stress less.

Kayden Wells
Parents: Kyle and Rebecca Wells
Hobbies: dancing, cheering at LKHS, listening to music, hanging out with friends, teaching dance and gymnastic classes Plans for College (degree, school, etc.): Attend Theater Arts Preparatory School (TAPS), Don Mirault's dance program in Las Vegas, Nevada, for six months in 2019. After TAPS, I plan on being a professional dancer/choreographer/teacher. Most Valued role model and why: Carly Lawrence, she is a professional, working dancer who is really sweet and nice to anyone. She choreographs amazing dances to songs and makes them sound and look fresh. Most valuable lesson learned: My most valued lesson learned is that I won't get every audition I go into. As a dancer you will get told one hundred "no's" for one "yes." Learning to walk away from that "no" and being fine with it is a huge challenge because it is not always your dancing that cuts you, it could be little things such as your looks or how you do not fit what is being looked for. How do you relax: The way I relax is to go into an empty studio, turn on some music and just dance my heart out. However I feel like dancing. In this way of dancing called freestyle, there are no rules of how you have to dance, Its just a let it all go type of thing. If you could meet anyone in the world (living or not) who would it be and what would you say to them? If I could meet anyone in the world it would have to be Jojo Gomez. I would ask her to train me, and if I could go on Demi Lavato's tour with her as a back up dancer. If you could give 50,000 to any charity in the world which one and why: I would donate to Texas court appointed special advocates (CASA) because they help children in their most needed moments. Not everyone has had the opportunities I have had. It is important to help those that are truly unable to help themselves. What are three words that describe you best? passionate, dedicated, friendly. Most unexpected moment: My most unexpected moment would be when I made all the rounds for an extremely competitive dance convention called JUMP, as their VIP finalist. Funniest moment: My funniest moment would be dancing on stage to our group musical theater, "We Both Reached For The Gun," from the musical, Chicago. I was the doll and my friend was the lawyer, in this dance I would run to down stage for the gun and my friend would try and get me. As I slid for the gun, she slides on top of me to keep me from reaching the gun, but only this time she slid a little too hard and slid right over my head and I hit my head on the stage. After we got off stage we both laughed so hard about it and still do to this day. Biggest Accomplishment: My biggest accomplishment is getting the scholarship to go to TAPS in 2019, which is a huge step toward chasing my dreams. What makes you unique and special: I am special and unique by being blessed with the ability to dance. Not every one is able to dance, and for me having that ability makes me special, unique, and blessed. Don't get me wrong, dance is 99% hard work and then natural talent, but my heart lies in that work and it speaks to my soul. Secret Wish: My secret wish is that I hope to make top 10 on So You Think You Can Dance.

School activities: Volleyball, Track, Softball, Student Council, FCA, and Yearbook Most valued role model and why: My most valued role model would be my dad. What material possession can you not live without? My one possession I could not live without would have to be my chocolate lab, Hershey. She is definitely my sunshine on a cloudy day. How do you relax? Well when I'm not traveling for softball, I am so worn out I just come home, watch movies, and sleep. If you could meet anyone in the world (living or nonliving) who would it be and what would you say to them? I would love to meet Princess Diana. I would love to tell her that she has always been inspiring to me. Her passion and love for others is beyond amazing. What are three words that describe you best? The words that would best describe me are outgoing, driven, and honest. Most unexpected moment? The most unexpected moment I have ever had would have to be my freshmen year. My team and I made it to the fourth round of the playoffs for softball. Going into the sixth inning tied, I was at bat, and there were 2 outs. I had 2 strikes on me and bases were loaded. I took a deep breath, prayed a big prayer, swung as hard as I could.... that was my first GRAND SLAM! Funniest Moment? It is really hard to pinpoint just one...I'm a pretty comical gal.

One will be chosen to highlight in print and the others will be featured on our Facebook page! Biggest accomplishment? My travel team, Texas Bombers, traveled to California this summer. With a roster of only 11, we were pretty sure our time would be spent playing less and vacationing more. We ended up bringing the 3rd, place plaque back to Texas out of 67 of the nations top teams.

What makes you unique and special? I would say the fact that I stick to my goals makes me unique. I set goals and don't stop until I reach them. Secret wish? To have dance skills like my little sister, Laney. Most valued lesson learned? Stay true to yourself. Don’t change because of the people around you. Look at your goals and let that be your purpose. If you could give 50,000 to any charity in the world which one and why: If I could give $50,000 to any charity it would definitely be an animal rescue group. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Things Not To Do During A Tournament When fishing a tournament, we are or at least should be preoccupied with catching fish. There are, however, some individuals who are easily distracted and do things you should not do while trying to win a derby. A short list is provided, but please add your own thoughts to the list. So, in no particular order, things not to do: Don’t get caught up in watching another guy’s fish. Don’t mess with alligators or snakes by throwing lures at them. Don’t overthink the situation. Don’t get too pumped up when you catch one, or rather don’t go “Ike.” Don’t pull out a gun and start shooting stumps. Don’t trash your boat or tackle when you lose a fish. See, when you get distracted you lose your focus and that hurts your ability to catch fish. I have actually done three of them and I’m not admitting which ones though. Someone else in town we all know was bad about four of them and just the other day a guy was shooting stumps while observing a tournament……DUH!

LOWER FOR LONGER
Keep interest rates in perspective and an eye on opportunity
"You’ve worked hard for your money, now make your money work hard for you.” We’ve all heard this phrase before. And whether you view it as an axiom or an overly used allusion to the delivery of enlightened asset advice, this cleverly constructed string of words clearly states the goal of every income investor. And with the onset of 2018 comes the continuing need for carefully managed portfolios to keep generating income. As we look down the economic road ahead, we see the distinct prospect of rising short-term interest rates with years upon years of rates at near zero in the rearview mirror. In fact, the Federal Reserve raised short-term interest rates three times in 2017 and has already penciled in 066 ALT Magazine | September 2018
three quarter-point raises for this year. These changes can send ripples throughout the financial markets. And since income portfolios rely on a strategic mix of stocks, bonds and other investments to generate cash, many are wondering what impact these variables will have on investment income. Let’s take a look at the options.
Not all bleak for bonds
Any investment pundit will tell you: When interest rates increase, bond values decrease. If rates for intermediate and long-term maturities continue to rise, bond prices will decline and yields will increase. However, though the value of bonds may be expected to decrease, the interest paid will
continue and cash flow will remain unchanged. As bonds mature, income investors now enjoy an opportunity to rein- vest the proceeds at higher yields, increasing their incomes. Even if prices are lower, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If individual bond owners simply hold their bonds to maturity or call, they will receive the par value, barring default. Remember, bonds that have shorter-term maturities tend to be less sensitive to interest rate hikes.
Dutiful delivery of dividends
Among experts, moderate-yield dividend growers are believed to have more stable cash flows than their non-dividend paying counterparts, especially in times of
moving interest rates. While smallcap companies generate excitement (i.e., volatility), dividend growers move steadily along in a more mature and predictable way. These are companies with generally low debt load and a stable fixed-capital structure. When sales move upward, margins widen and dividends can rise. On the other hand, high-yield dividend stocks may under perform their low to moderate-yield counterparts when interest rates are on the climb. These are companies that bear the brunt of rising finance costs due to lower cash flow. Consequently, high- yield stocks tend to behave more like bonds and are more likely to experience a negative impact when rates rise. Though not to be avoided, these equities require more scrutiny, and your advisor can help you parse the details.
The reality of REITs
Due to their relatively reliable dividend, real estate investment trusts (REITs) are often found as instruments of diversification in portfolios of income-oriented investors. Though it may seem counter intuitive to think of REITs as performers when interest rates rise – since rising rates equal higher prices for borrowing money – REITs can be made up of business rental and industrial properties that are less sensitive to the upward movement of interest rates. As a result, real estate companies have the potential to earn reliable streams of income from long and stable tenant leases. What’s more? REITs must distribute at least 90% of their taxable income to shareholders as dividends.
Wherein lies the future?
Of course, there is no set trajectory when it comes to the future – including interest rates – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The biggest tax bill
in 30 years is now in effect, and companies are touting expansion, bonuses and raises. Billions of dollars of U.S. corporate capital are also forecast to repatriate. That’s why it’s important to stay in touch with your advisor. If you have questions, simply call and set an appointment. He or she will be glad to review your portfolio in light of all the changes that are taking place and how they may affect your future earnings and cash flow.
Putting the “new” in annuities In the past, if you were looking for a steady, reliable, fixed income performer in your portfolio, an annuity fit the bill. A fixed annuity purchase meant paying a sum of money for the promise of fixed cash flow in the future. If interest rates increased, however, you were still where you started. Thankfully, times have changed. A fixed indexed annuity with a lifetime income feature enables the purchase of cash flow at a discounted rate. What may make this feature attractive is the purchaser still owns and controls the account value that grows at a reasonable rate similar to fixed income rates today (comparable to corporate A-rated bonds), and this account would pay out as a death benefit if the purchaser dies prematurely. The benefit of adding an income rider is that funds may grow at a much higher rate, enabling the purchaser to enjoy higher cash flow from the account value, which is also guaranteed. If, however, interest rates improve by the time the owner retires, or is already receiving income, the remaining account value balance can be converted back to a traditional fixed income investment or another product type (CDs, bonds, etc.) that may pay more. Now that’s flexibility.
Information has been obtained from sources considered reliable, but we do not guarantee that the foregoing report is accurate or complete. There is no assurance any of the trends mentioned will continue or forecasts will occur. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Legislative and regulatory agendas are subject to change at the discretion of leadership or as dictated by events. Dividends are not guaranteed and must be authorized by the company’s board of directors. Investing always involves risk and you may incur a profit or loss. No investment strategy can guarantee success. The value of fixed income securities fluctuates and investors may receive more or less than their original investments if sold prior to maturity. Bonds are subject to price change and availability. Risks include, but are not limited to, changes in interest rates, liquidity, credit quality, volatility, and duration. Past performance is no assurance of future results. There is an inverse relationship between interest rate movements and bond prices. Generally, when interest rates rise, bond prices fall and when interest rates fall, bond prices generally rise. Be advised that investments in real estate and in REITs have various risks, including possible lack of liquidity and devaluation based on adverse economic and regulatory changes. Additionally, investments in REITs will fluctuate with the value of the underlying properties, and the price at redemption may be more or less than the original price paid. Real estate investments can be subject to different and greater risks than more diversified investments. Declines in the value of real estate, economic conditions, property taxes, tax laws and interest rates all present potential risks to real estate investments. Please consult a qualified tax professional regarding your particular situation. Fixed annuities have limitations. If you decide to take your money out early, you may face fees called surrender charges. Plus, if you’re not yet 59½, you also may have to pay an additional 10% tax penalty on top of ordinary income taxes. You should also know that a fixed annuity contains guarantees and protections that are subject to the issuing insurance company’s ability to pay for them. Withdrawals from annuities will affect both the account value and the death benefit. The investment return and principal value will fluctuate so that an investor’s shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost. © 2018 Raymond James & Associates, Inc., member New York Stock Exchange/SIPC © 2018 Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., member FINRA/SIPC Investment products are: not deposits, not FDIC/ NCUA insured, not insured by any government agency, not bank guaranteed, subject to risk and may lose value. 17-WorthWhile-0016 BS 5/18 ALT-Mag.com | September 2018 067
