Weddings…

I love everything about them! From the dresses, to the tuxes, to the emotion. I have been involved in the wedding industry for a long time! Photographing hundreds of brides and grooms, and helping them through a very emotional day, is so rewarding. After a break for a couple of years to open an indoor shooting range, I am back doing what I love – photographing and helping brides document their dream day! Memories pour back as I think about my start in this industry. I had been photographing all kinds of people, from seniors to babies, to families, to everything else -- when a friend asked me to photograph their wedding. Now I cringe when someone tells me a friend is doing their photography because there is so much involved in making sure you get everything you need. That day turned out great! Barnette and Jan Price, owners of Prissy Chrissy Ranch, had a lot to do with that. They quickly became my wonderful friends and I have so many memories and stories of the weddings we did together. I have told people for years that with every business decision I have made, I pray -- I have never jumped off that cliff without God holding my hand! And God answers – sometimes not exactly what I want, but always perfect in the end! So after much prayer, my “other daughter,” Miranda Johnson, came to help. She is a natural photographer, easy to work with, professional, and loves weddings and photography as much as I do. For 10 years, we worked together and the business changed a lot during that time. We started ALT Magazine during her tenure. Not only did she have to process 2-3 weddings per week at times, including designing wedding books – and I was a stickler about getting them processed timely – but she also had to help me get a magazine to print! The list was endless and she loved it! My daughter Jaclyn helped us once she was back from college, but for a long time it was the two of us! After having her sweet baby boy, Jace, she chose to take a position as the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta, Texas, where she lives. She was recently chosen as Woman of the Year for the Atlanta area. The skills she learned working here were put into great use in her new job and she has thrived. When she left, I thought I would never find someone to replace her. There could never be anyone who could possibly fill that position. Again, prayer. Then Lindsey Gordon sent in her resume. Again, I felt at peace. Even though she had no experience, she had the skills to do the job. Lindsey was a great addition to our team for 2 years. She was a quick learner, who loved helping our customers find something that worked for them. As one of them said, “She could get in my head and understand what I wanted.” As with Miranda, she recently chose to take another position with Texas A&M University-Texarkana. We know she will excel there and we look forward to seeing the accolades I am sure she will receive. Now we have a new beginning and, similar to a wedding, it is exciting! And again, I prayed about it. My prayers were answered and our new editor, Amy Jones, comes to us with the skills, intelligence and drive to move us into the future. We have added several things to our plate this year, many that she has a great deal of experience with. We look forward to our readers and customers meeting her. As with anything, change is always happening and you make of it what you will. I don’t dwell on things in the past. I look to the future – a future that looks even brighter for 2016! Never Had I Ever... Jumped. I never thought I would actually land my dream job. I feel blessed to do what I love. It amazes me how God just fits all the pieces together in perfect timing. My path to ALT Magazine has been 11 years in the making. I realize now that all the bumps and bruises were molding me and benefiting me for this exact job. Growing up in Southwest Arkansas was a simple pleasure. In a town of 350 people, there isn’t much to do but use your imagination. It’s funny the things I remember; riding in the back of a pickup truck to my softball games, playing outside until it was dark, and my dad’s red mustang. I grew up happy and rich in love. I thought I had the choice of living in the country or at the beach. I never imagined I would be an editor and graphic designer. After graduating from Ashdown High School in 1999, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where my career in finance began. I started working for a mortgage company answering phones. That led to working at the corporate office of Bank of America in Dallas, Texas. While in Dallas, I attended Brookhaven Community College where I graduated with a degree in Visual Communications with an emphasis in Journalism. I had finally found my passion at the age of 24. I loved almost everything about it; the creativity, the atmosphere, the people, but not the competition. In 2015 I stepped out of my comfort zone for the first time and went for it. I quit my job in finance and haven’t looked back. I’ve been pursuing this exact job since 2005. I am thankful I had the courage to go for it. I was willing to risk it all to do what I loved. It was the first time I had ever jumped. All I had was my faith in God pulling me through. It actually makes me wonder what else I have been missing out on. I’ve decided to be more adventurous in 2016 and try something new every month. Who knows, maybe I will even write a column about it. It’s easy to sit here and say that everything works out. The truth is, it takes faith and perseverance. It wasn’t easy to make that jump, but I sure am glad I did. Here’s to new adventures! P.S. My goal for 2016 is to make a difference in someone’s life. I haven’t figured out what that will be yet, but I hope to share the story this year.

Jason & Anne Granado OCTOBER 17, 2015 “Our wedding was so special because it was a true reflection of who we are. The entire event came together through help from our family and friends. We are blessed to know wonderful and talented people, and with their expertise, we were able to customize our perfect day. We wrote our own vows, made our famous recipes for chili, and turned my parents’ back yard into a gorgeous light-strung venue. Also, our ceremony was officiated by my uncle, and I thought his well-chosen words and the way he involved our family and friends as witnesses was the most beautiful part of the whole experience. This day truly celebrated our life-long commitment to each other, and there is nothing we would change.”

G r a n a d o We d d i n g The Love Story: Anne and Jason met at a time when neither one was searching for a serious relationship. “Since we were both raised in the same small area, Atlanta and Bloomburg, we had always known of each other, but we didn’t meet formally until a mutual friend’s birthday party at Zapatas. We were seated next to each other as the only two single people,” Anne says. After dinner, they went out dancing and two-stepped to all Anne’s favorite Randy Roger’s songs. “Over the next few months, we just kept running into each other, and Jason asked me out on a real date,” Anne says. Though Jason picked a movie sequel that was not that good, Hangover II, and Anne picked Fuji Kim without knowing that Jason didn’t like sushi, that first date was their last first date. They were together for three years when Jason proposed and said that he wanted to grow old with her, and they planned the small backyard wedding of their dreams at Anne’s parents’ home in Atlanta, Texas. The couple loves traveling, listening to live music (especially Randy Rogers), cooking, watching movies and all their favorite shows, having lazy days with their Great Dane children and spending time with family and friends. The Love Story: One Sunday afternoon after church, I went by Wal- Mart to pick up a bottle of nail polish. As I entered the cosmetics department I noticed a man coming from the garden center. We exchanged glances as we passed one another, but quickly went our separate ways. I stared blankly at the nail polish for about 5 minutes debating on whether or not I had ever seen this man and wondering how I could catch another glance of him. When I finally mustered up the courage to walk in his direction, he was waiting for me. I nervously scurried away to wait until I thought he was gone. Then, out of the corner of my eye I saw him headed my way. His first words to me were “Are you seeing anyone right now?” I was shocked at his forwardness, but we immediately hit it off and quickly became inseparable. After a year and a half of dating he surprised me by asking me to marry him on December 20, 2014 at a Christmas party. All of our friends were there to share our special moment, and of course capture it on camera! Our Favorite Thing: One of your favorite things that made your wedding special: Pre-recorded version of Abby singing “When I Say I Do” by Matthew West that was played during the lighting of the unity candle. (Richard had no idea).

After your dream engagement, the real planning begins. There are so many questions to be answered: Where will we have it? What kind of dress do I want? What will our colors be? To a bride, the choices can be overwhelming. There are so many magazines, books, and Pinterest pins detailing how to create the perfect wedding. But, sometimes, the best advice comes from other women who understand exactly what you are going through. We asked five local brides who’ve already ‘been there done that’ to share their best tips and advice with you for both planning the day of your dreams and creating a marriage that lasts.

Meet the Brides Andi Flory. Andi met Dave while they were both interning at TOMS shoes in Santa Monica, California. Andi knew pretty quickly that Dave was the kind of guy she wanted to marry. Then, while visiting Hawaii for Dave’s family reunion, they kayaked to islands off the coast of Oahu, and Dave proposed in a secluded and romantic cove. They were married at First Presbyterian Church in Texarkana, Arkansas, on August 29, 2009. They are now parents to Ellie, 3 years-old, and Caleb, 10-months-old. Tabetha Nguyen. Tabetha met Floy in high school. They started dating a few months before she graduated high school and left for college. They continued to date long distance (absence makes the heart grow fonder right?) and saw each other most weekends. Then, Floy proposed a few days before Tabetha’s birthday. They were married November 6, 2005, at Prissy Chrissy Ranch. They are parents to Oliver, three-years-old, and several fur babies.

Meet the Brides

Courtney Perritt. When Courtney was only 18, she met the man of her dreams. She and Coby were both set up with each other’s closest friends, but neither relationship worked out. Their friendship grew into something more, and Courtney says you could call it, “love at second glance.” She says that even at that young of an age, he made her feel “cherished.” The two were married at Prissy Chrissy Ranch on May 2, 2009.

Jennifer Tyler. Jennifer and Joe met in a history class at Texas A&M Texarkana. Jennifer was amused by Joe because he walked into class late every day and never took notes. They dated long-distance for five years while Joe earned his law degree from UALR, and on a trip to New Orleans, Joe surprised Jennifer with a proposal in Jackson Square. They were married at Prissy Chrissy Ranch on December 3, 2005. They are now parents to six-year-old twin girls, Jenna and Jillian. Kristi Wooten. Kristi was invited to attend Westside Church of Christ by her now-husband’s sister. It was there that Kristi crossed paths with Dale, and they joke now that her sister-in-law had ulterior motives for the invitation. While dating they spent most of their time on a shared interest: dirt track racing. Friday nights they spent in the shop getting the car ready; Saturday was race day; Sunday was a day for church activities. When Dale proposed, he said the wedding had to be either before or after race season. They got married March 24, 2007, at Westside Church of Christ where they met. They are the parents of Zaydin, six-years-old, and Zynlii, three-years-old.

Real Brides Share Advice for the Perfect Wedding and Happiness After Q: What is your best advice for planning a wedding? Try on different styles of wedding dresses even if it’s not something you would normally choose. “Even if you think you know what kind of wedding dress you want, try on all styles! I came away with the opposite of what I thought I would want, and I can’t imagine having anything else!”--Andi Flory Plan this day together. “I know it’s stressful at times, but try to remember the day is about you and your husband, no one else. Plan it together if you can. Some men may not care, but I was always grateful for my husband’s input. It wasn’t just about me.”-Courtney Perritt

Make your wedding day personal. “I recommend adding things to your day that make it special and personal for both of you. Our wedding ceremony was based on the Ecclesiastes 4:12, “a Tabetha Nguyen cord of three strands is not easily broken.” During the ceremony we braided our three wedding cords, and to this day, we have them in a display case in our living room. It is a daily reminder of our foundation. My husband’s race car was also in most of our wedding photos. Even though he no longer races, it was a major part of our lives at that time, and we love the memories that those photos bring. Make this day your day in history.” --Kristi Wooten

Choose vendors that understand your vision for your wedding day and that make you feel comfortable with the process. “I don’t normally handle stress well, especially if things aren’t falling into place like the perfectionist in me think it should. We choose our venue because the Price’s (owners) talked to me and worked to get to know me and what I liked. I didn’t feel stressed and enjoyed every moment. When we hired Debbie Brower as our photographer, there was an instant connection and our photos turned out great,

which I think is partly due to the fact that we built a relationship so quickly with her. We chose to work with people who made us feel comfortable, and later, they became like family to us.” --Tabetha Nguyen

Stay organized. “We had a very short engagement and this caused some stress on our part; however, I wouldn’t change a thing! Make sure you keep things organized. We had a folder to organize pictures for references, contracts, phone numbers, etc.” --Jennifer Tyler Ask for opinions from those you trust.

“To save time when planning, find one or two people whom you trust their opinion. Don’t ask for ten different people’s advice. Keep it simple, and things can run smoothly.” --Tabetha Nguyen Q: What are some ways you can have a fabulous wedding on a Andi Flory budget? You don’t have to have name brand to feel beautiful. “Anyone that knows me knows that I love a bargain, and my wedding day was no exception. I found my dream dress, the one that made me feel beautiful, but I could not wrap my mind around paying $2,500 for a dress I was only wearing for a few hours. So, I took to the Internet and found the same dress without the name brand for $500. Only a few people knew that I was wearing a $500 knockoff and not a $2500 gown. My suggestion is to shop around; there are always great deals for way less.” --Kristi Wooten If you have to make budget cuts, spend your money on the things that will last. “Put most of your money towards photos and video. Flowers are pretty, but they don’t

last. If you can’t afford real flowers, you could always find a tasteful way to use fake flowers. Or, improvise with candles, lanterns and lights. One of the best decisions we made was hiring our photographers. It is so awesome to go back and relive the emotion that they captured. My husband and I lost our grandparents within two years of each other, so looking back Kristi Wooten at our pictures is priceless.” --Courtney Perritt Ask your friends for help. “If you have a friend that loves organization, ask if they would be a part of your wedding as your wedding planner/coordinator. Also, if you want to save money for your bridesmaids and flower girls, there are companies that allow you to rent your dress for a few days and then ship them back. There are tons of DIY things you can do to decorate for your reception, too. Just be sure to do a test run of whatever DIY you want to do to avoid a Pinterest fail.” --Andi Flory

Deciding when to retire can have a lasting impact on an individual’s financial security for decades to come. Unfortunately for most, timing issues are little understood and poorly planned. Regardless of income level, maintaining lifestyle expectations through a retirement that may last 30 years or more requires careful planning. Most everyone dreams of the day they can finally retire and live the life of leisure. Yet recent evidence suggests that most nearretirees and retirees need to do a better job of timing and long-term planning. One study, conducted by the Society of Actuaries, looked at retirement risk factors and concluded that while decisions around the timing of retirement are among the most critical, for most individuals, those decisions are not carefully planned out.1 The study found that while a high percentage of retirees/preretirees have considered delaying retirement, when asked how a three-year delay in retirement would or could have affected them financially, almost half of current retirees said a delay would have made them no more financially secure. Among current workers, nearly 40% felt a delay would have no impact on their future finances. Another trouble spot is time horizons. According to the study, the typical retiree has a planning horizon of just 5 years; preretirees plan just 10 years out. A shockingly low number -7% of retirees and 13% of preretirees -- look 20 years or more into the future when making important financial decisions. Even fewer respondents have plans to account for their life expectancies. Clearly these gaps in planning can have major implications for your financial security and standard of living in retirement. Consider the following points when planning for your own retirement. Should You Delay? For many, Social Security is a major component of their retirement income. Social Security benefits increase substantially with retirement age. For instance, for those with full Social Security benefits the monthly payout is 54

substantially higher at age 70 than it would be if you opted for early retirement at age 62. Visit the Social Security Administration’s website for more on benefits and retirement age. Consider a Long Horizon Regardless of income level, maintaining lifestyle expectations through a retirement that may last 30 years or more requires careful planning. Researchers refer to this planning challenge as “longevity risk,” or the risk that an individual could outlive their retirement income. To plan for such a contingency, many financial experts suggest the following game plan: • Withdraw very conservatively (just 4% or 5% annually) from your retirement accounts. • Consider purchasing a long-term care insurance policy, which covers nursing home and other long-term care expenses. • Maintain an allocation to stock investments, for their longterm growth potential.2 • Consult with a financial professional. DINNER Pan Seared Salmon Over Garlic Asparagus With Wilted Spinach and Sundried Tomatoes Ingredients: 2 Salmon fillets 1 Bundle of Asparagus 1/2 Jar of Sundried Tomatoes 2 cups of Spinach 4 Tbls Olive Oil 2 Tbls Minced Garlic 1/2 lemon cut into wedges Salt & Pepper to Taste Directions: Place bundle of asparagus in medium frying pan and heat on medium/low heat. Drizzle with two tbls olive oil and a tbls of minced garlic. Sprinkle with salt & pepper and let sautĂŠ till tender. Heat two tbls olive oil in medium frying pan on medium heat. Season salmon fillets with salt and pepper and gently place in pan. Cook 6 minutes on each side, adding tbls of minced garlic when flipping. After cooking thoroughly, sprinkle two cups of spinach around the filets and top filets with sundried tomatoes. Wilt spinach (should take about one minute). Serve filets and accoutrements over asparagus with lemon wedge.

DESSERT Ooey Gooey Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients: 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar 1 Cup (2 Sticks) Butter Softened 2 Eggs 1 1/2 Tsp Vanilla 1 Tsp Baking Soda 1 Tsp Salt 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour 12 Ounces Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips Directions: Place sugars, butter, eggs and vanilla in mixer bowl. Attach bowl and flat beater to mixer. Turn to speed 2 and mix about 30 seconds. Stop and scrape bowl. Turn to speed 4 and beat about 30 seconds. Stop and Scrape bowl. Turn to stir speed. Gradually add baking soda, salt and flour to sugar mixture and mix about 2 minutes. Turn to speed 2 and mix about 30 seconds. Stop and scrape bowl. Add chocolate chips. Turn to stir speed and mix about 15 seconds. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from baking sheets immediately and cool on wire racks.

The Phantoms

Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, “Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward in the same direction.” Dr. David and Susan Whitten’s life experiences have taught them to focus their gaze on making the world a better place. Whether it is through their support of multiple local and national charities, their choices as parents, or their work at the Beauty and Wellness Center in Texarkana, this husband and wife team works together to improve the lives of those around them. It was because of their generosity and compassion that they were named this year’s “Phantoms” for the Temple Memorial Rehabilitation Center’s 13th Annual Phantom Ball held Saturday, February 27 at the Texarkana Convention Center. The criteria for this honor requires the recipients to be those who “give generously to their community, financially or donating their time, and someone who gives to the Temple Center.” “We were very surprised when we were asked to be this year’s phantoms,” Susan says. “Both David and I are more comfortable in the background, under the radar so to speak. We love doing for others; it’s a part of who we both are, who are families are, where we come from. It’s what you are supposed to do; it is not something we do for recognition.” While they were honored, the attention humbled the couple who shared a laugh over the fact that neither felt very deserving. “We are just regular people,” Susan insists. However, David and Susan’s background reveals a much richer story. The Whitten’s lives are filled with a passion for life and for helping others. Dr. David Whitten, a native of Arkansas, graduated from Harvard University as an undergraduate and earned his PhD in human physiology from University of California in San Francisco, where he also taught medical school. Not wanting to be so far from his family, David moved to Dallas where he continued his practice of Emergency Medicine. He would travel through Texarkana on his way to visit his mom in Bearden, occasionally stopping to check on his brother,

The Whittens sister and nephews. His visits became more frequent after he met Susan, who had moved from East Tennessee to Texarkana with her teenage sons, Parker and Scott. “After a wonderful courtship, we got married in Bearden, right across the street from my mother’s house at Bearden United Methodist Church,” David says. “With guests from as far away as Upper East Tennessee and Raleigh, North Carolina, Brother Andy celebrated with us in a brief and simple Christian ceremony. Most of my mother’s dear friends from the tiny town attended and made us feel very special.” The new Dr. and Mrs. David Whitten built a new life for themselves in Texarkana. After spending many years doing life or death medicine as a board certified Emergency Physician, and seeing all the tragic ways patients’ lifestyle choices conspire to cause painful, debilitating, and premature illnesses, David became interested in what keeps men and women looking young and vital. He decided to increase the scope of his practice to help those who have not yet progressed so far down the road of age and illness. He attended multiple preceptorships and training programs, while applying his immense scientific background to the problems of aging. “I learned everything I could about restorative and anti-aging medicine and techniques and avenues for helping individuals restore balance and health to the lives of those who do not want to be old before their time,” David says. David’s passion for this subject and his medical expertise led him to open The Beauty and Wellness Center, a cosmetic surgery and medical spa for everyone. “The Beauty and Wellness Center is a feel good place, and everyone deserves to feel good,” Susan says. We do provide so many different services, but our main goal for anyone who comes in is for them to feel better when

they walk out the door. Life is supposed to be beautiful. It helps when we feel beautiful. Through medical skin care, cosmetic surgery, a massage, a facial, or simply getting your hair done, we want to be a part of what makes you feel good and better about yourself.” David and Susan work together daily at The Beauty and Wellness Center, an

opportunity that Susan says has been a blessing. “It would be fair to say that I wear many hats at The Beauty and Wellness Center. It’s both a blessing and an honor to work with my husband,” Susan says. “He’s an amazing doctor and person. It has been fun to grow our practice together and play upon both our strengths. We are much better together than apart, and we are very much a family-run business.” The Whittens definitely exemplify their own beauty and wellness philosophy in their daily lives by celebrating their combined interests and passions---medicine, science, literature, art, music, wine, travel, camping, parenting, philosophy, psychology. The two are lifelong learners and use what they have learned to enrich their lives. When the couple isn’t working, they enjoy many activities together. They are avid sports fans with season tickets to the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys (though David says that Susan does love the Green Bay Packers). They love to explore wine and food with

We both work hard and play hard!” David says. “We get a great deal of fulfillment in our spiritual life from reading, praying and attending worship whenever we can. We love to relax in front of a big fire outdoors in the mountains or other rural locations when we have a chance. We love to paddle on still or moving water-New Years, we often celebrate with a paddle trip on a lake in Hot Springs or elsewhere, while tending to a nice bonfire. We love to go to the beach in warm weather and annually join Susan’s family at the beach in South Carolina for a week. Family is very important to us.” It was a family issue, a personal issue, that led Susan and David to learn more about the mission of the Temple Center. In 1952, Dr. S. A. Part of what makes it so special is it’s quiet way of simply taking care of children and their families, one at a time,” Susan says. “Day in and day out, the therapists and employees of Temple treat each child with such love and respect. They meet them where they are, and they share in, take part in, their journey, always with the goal of moving forward. And they

make it fun!” The Whitten’s personal experience with Temple deals with their son, Scott. Years ago, Scott’s dad, Greg Burks, and Susan were trying to find answers as to why Scott wasn’t developing in the way that he should. “Working in the clinical community, I understand facts, and I understand a diagnosis and a need for that matterof-fact, non-emotional tone from a medical professional,” Susan says. “But, just like what we try to do within our Weight Loss Program at Beauty and Wellness Center, when sharing with a patient that they are obese, or

that is seen. No parent wants that for their child. Temple looks past disabilities; they see children of God.” Temple’s annual fundraiser, The Phantom Ball, enables the Center to treat those who cannot pay for services provided. The Center provides about $250,000 per year in uncompensated care and depends on its fundraisers to enable them to keep their doors open and provide this much needed care. The Whittens want to encourage others to attend the Phantom Ball, not only because it will be a great party with delicious food and a rockin’ band, but also because all the money raised stays right here in Texarkana. “The night of the ball, a child will be honored, one of many from Temple,” David says. “It’s an opportunity to learn, share and be a part of making a difference right here in our community. Often times, I hear people say that they wish they could do this or possess a talent that would allow them to make more of a difference. Anyone can come to Phantom Ball! Anyone who comes and pays for a ticket or buys something from the silent auction is making a difference for a child and family in our community. This is a win-win.” This year’s ‘Phantoms,’ will also be honored at the event for their generosity and commitment to helping Temple, though it’s their own vision of a beautiful life of learning more and giving back that propel the couple, not the recognition they receive from it. They believe in this organization’s mission, and they personally experienced the kindness and compassion Temple shows to every person who walks through their doors. “Temple is a resource for our community. It’s a place of empowerment. I don’t think enough people understand just what all is offered/provided in the way of services, and that these services are offered regardless of each family’s ability to pay,” Susan says. “It’s more than just speech, occupational, or physical therapy; there’s a relationship with each child and family.”

Greg and I had gone many places and were told so many things, and these were not positive things. After a while, when that is your baby, that becomes so overwhelming. Temple was a resource for us, but what I can remember most is that they thought our child was beautiful. They looked at us as a family and loved us in that moment. Looking back, Darla Fountain was the only other therapist that did that. Sometimes when people look at a child with a disability, that disability is all

Patman, Cold and Rising This time of year we are in somewhat of a question mark -cold water, high and rising water, and pre-spawn. What’s a guy to do? Well, you could take off to a lake like Welsh or Montecello where things are pretty stable, or you could tough it out on high water Patman. If you choose the latter, then you might want to buckle down and get ready for some pretty tough fishing. But, you can still have a good time and get to fish in ways we don’t normally fish on Patman. First thing to remember is things are drastically different and depth is your friend. One way to put some fish in the livewell is to fish the points and channel swings putting your offering

in the area where the brush line is when the lake is normal. I know that is deep, but there will be bass there. This calls for either a jig or a crank bait. Fish the crank bait right at the top of the submerged brush where suspended fish might be and the jig down in the same brush and out from it. Think of it like fishing the outside edge of a moss line. If that is not your cup of tea, then go to the hot water lakes with a couple of hundred of your friends whom you don’t know and catch the spawners. This is by far the easiest way to catch some good fish if you don’t care for fishing deep. Either way remember to keep warm and have fun.

Petfinder put together a list of common adoption myths, in the hopes that you can gently point friends toward this article when they talk about adding a pet to their family. Myth #1: I don’t know what I’m getting There may in fact be more information available about an adoptable pet than one from a breeder or pet store. Many of the pets posted on Petfinder are in foster care. Foster parents live with their charges 24-7 and can often tell you, in detail, about the pet’s personality and habits. If the pet is at a shelter, the staff or volunteers may be able to tell you what he or she is like. At the very least, you can ask the staff if the pet was an owner surrender (rather than a stray) and, if so, what the former owner said about him or her. Quite often pets are given up because the owner faced financial or housing issues (more on that later). You can also ask about the health and behavioral evaluations the pet has undergone since arriving at the shelter. In contrast, pet store owners rarely have an idea of what a pet will be like in a home. Myth #2: I can’t find what I want at a shelter If you can’t find the pet you’re looking for on Petfinder, don’t give up. Some shelters maintain waiting lists for specific breeds, so don’t be afraid to ask! There are also breed-specific rescues for just about every breed, and most of them post their pets on Petfinder. (Petfinder can even e-mail you when a pet that fits your criteria is posted — just click “Save this Search” at the top of your search results page.) Myth #3: I can get a free pet, so why pay an adoption fee? According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (via the ASPCA), approximately 65% of pet parents in the U.S. get their pets for free or at low cost, and most pets are obtained from acquaintances or family members. The NCPPSP also reports that pets acquired from friends make up more than 72

30% of pets surrendered to shelters (read the article here). While getting a “free” pet may seem like a bargain at first, you’re then responsible for veterinary costs that shelters and rescue groups usually cover, including: • Spaying/neutering $150-300 • Distemper vaccination $20-30 x2 • Rabies vaccination $15-25 • Heartworm test $15-35 • Flea/tick treatment $50-200 • Microchip $50 Myth #4: Pets are in shelters because they didn’t make good pets In fact, the main reasons pets are given up include: • Owners are moving to housing that don’t allow pets (7% dogs, 8% cats) • Allergies (8% cats) • Owner having personal problems (4% dogs and cats) • Too many or no room for litter mates (7% dogs, 17% cats) • Owner can no longer afford the pet (5% dogs, 6% cats) • Owner no longer has time for the pet (4% dogs) As you can see, many of the reasons have nothing to do with the pets themselves. Working with shelter staff and volunteers can be a great way to figure out the best match for you and your home. Myth #5: Shelter pets have too much baggage Rescued pets have full histories … something that can actually be GREAT for adopters. Remember, all pets– even eight-week old puppies and kittens — have distinct personalities. Those personalities will either jive with your home and lifestyle or not. On Friday, February 19, 2016, the Texarkana Area Veterans Council (TAVC) will host their 17th Annual Chili Cook-Off at the Truman Arnold Center at the Texarkana College. Area chili cooks will be competing for trophies in three catagories: Business, Civic Groups, and Individual. There will also be a “Peoples’ Choice” Award and an award for “Best Presentation”, both chosen by the public. Funds from this event will be used to purchase a new Dav Van (when needed) to transport local veterans to the VA Medical Center in Shreveport, LA & the local VA clinic in Texarkana, and to assist local veterans and their families. The doors will open to the public at 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Tickets are six dollars. Each ticket will allow you to sample each chili and will enter you to win door prizes. On Saturday, February 27, 2016, the Temple Center will be celebrating the thirteenth annual Phantom Ball at the Hilton Garden Inn and Texarkana Convention Center. This is an annual gala event benefiting the client services of Temple Memorial Rehabilitation Center. This year’s Phantom Ball will honor someone special from our community as the “Phantom(s)”. The criterion for “Phantom” is one who gives generously of their time and financial support to the Temple Center and the community of Texarkana. Cocktail attire (cocktail dresses and suits), black tie optional (ballgowns and formal attire). Masks and fans are encouraged. Get ready for a night of great jazz standards and martinis...” There will be a silent auction, dinner, live music, dancing, casino style gaming, and martinis. Texarkana Friends of the Shelter (TFOS) is a non-profit corporation that is dedicated to assisting with necessary funding for the ACAC.
