From the Publisher I love fall. I think it might be my favorite season of the year. I love to watch as the leaves turn colors, falling to the ground, and creating a beautiful landscape across the area. Maybe it's the photographer in me, or maybe it's the fact that I love the cooler temperatures, but whatever the case, it's a wonderful time of year.

The other major benefit of fall is that all of the holidays are coming soon! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are wonderful times to have fun and enjoy family and friends. I am so thankful to have so many wonderful friends here. Although I wasn't born in Texarkana, I have lived most of my life here and feel as if I have been here forever.

With the holidays, we always start planning on parties and dinners. I have learned in the past few years that it is much more enjoyable to have someone cook the food for me. I don't have the time or energy to spend hours in the kitchen -- and if you start adding up the expense, you can hire someone for about the same amount! You can always be choosy with what you get -whether it's a totally catered dinner, wings and veggies, pizza -- whatever you prefer -- the budget is yours to set. Check out the wonderful places we have in this area where you can either have food delivered, picked up, or just book a private room and you don't even have to mess your house up -- or in my case, clean your house and put your dogs up! LOL Just enjoy yourself and your friends. Isn't that what the holiday season is all about?

Some who are less fortunate are unable to leave to go out. There are lots of great nursing facilities in our area to choose from. Ashley Traweek, our cover story, works for one. She brings joy to every resident living there. From dancing and singing in the hall, to sharing stories, she is there for whoever will watch and listen. I have known Ashley for quite some time, but I really got to know her over a dog -- who would have guessed? She adopted my foster dog, Puffin, and has been in love ever since.

And I have loved Ashley for loving my baby. She truly shares her joy with every one and every creature she meets.

So with this holiday season upon us, think about what you can do to share joy to others. Whether it's planning a party for your friends and family to attend, or going to be with someone who can not attend, make the CHOICE to help put a smile on someone's face. Your joy will increase ten-fold when you bless others.

A LIGHT FOR THOSE IN NEED...

VISIT, DANCE AND SMILE Ashley Traweek's life journey has taken her many places. The one she loves most is a part of her life she never even considered. Yet she would not change anything. It is what makes Ashley the person she has become.

Working in a nursing home had never crossed Ashley Traweek’s mind. In fact, Ashley’s mother in law always expressed a desire to work with the elderly, but the notion just went in one ear and out the other for Ashley.

However, when the opportunity for a new job opened at a nursing home in town, Ashley was forever changed. “I think that people’s common perceptions of nursing homes are that they are cold and dreary,” Ashley says. “Nursing homes have gotten such a bad rap in the past that people are almost scared of them. However, today, things are really different.”

Ashley moved to Texarkana with her husband, Robin, and their two kids, Cohen and Tindyl, in 2009. “We absolutely love it here! It is such a great small town community, and we couldn’t be happier,” Ashley says. “When we aren’t working we love spending time at home, grilling, watching movies and trying to keep up with our very active kids!”

After they moved, Ashley worked for Dierksen Hospice until she took time off to stay at home with her daughter. However, Ashley had a friend who worked in long-term care, and she thought that Ashley would really be interested in a new job opening as the Marketing Director for a local ALT-Mag.com | October 2017 013

Love, care and, at times, dancing nursing home in Texarkana. Ashley decided to look into it, and her bubbly personality and outgoing nature secured her the job on the spot even though, at the time, Ashley didn’t know anything about longterm care. Now, Ashley cannot see herself doing anything else. “I’ve prayed for years for the Lord to show me what my calling was, but I never would have thought this would be it,” Ashley says. “I never dreamed I would find my true calling at the age of 33 in a nursing home, but the Lord works in mysterious ways. I adore what I get to do everyday. Those sweet residents bring so much joy to my life and have changed me forever.”

Ashley’s job is to bring new residents into the facility, so most of her day is spent out in the community.

However, when she is in the facility, she loves to visit with the residents. “I see part of my job as being a light for the residents. I go up and down the hall to visit, dance, and make them smile,” Ashley says. “It takes a special person to work in a nursing home; you really have to have a heart for it, but, honestly, most people fall in love with the residents. They are so much fun!”

There are many stories that Ashley cherishes from moments with the residents, and most of them are hilarious. “They have the funniest stories. You literally never know what you are going to get! It’s different every day,” Ashley says. “For example, I like to dance up and down the halls and try to lift their spirits! Although, one of my favorites would just shake her head at me and tell me to 'just stop.’ I would ask her, 'You don't like my dancing?’ She would tell me, 'It just gets old.' Another resident hated my hair! She would tell me everyday that I needed to go see her beautician and that maybe she could help make me look better. She would always tell me to go blonde, maybe that would help. So one day I came in wearing a blonde wig and she said, 'Oh that looks much better, but now what about those eyebrows?’

Another great story is about the male resident who talks to Ashley every day. When she walks by, he says, “You look good enough to marry me!” Ashley always reminds him that she is already married, and he jokes back, “Well, you can get a deee-vorce!”

Every day, Ashley and other employees work to make sure that their residents feel comfortable and happy. They plan activities all through the week.

They have a van driver who will take residents to Wal-Mart and the mall. They also go to movies and get snow-cones or ice cream. “I think when people think of nursing homes they have this picture of residents stuck in their rooms with nurses in these white hats who are mean to them,” Ashley says. “And, we invite those people to come see our facilities. We just remodeled our buildings, and they have a fresh, contemporary feel. Plus, we have activities, ice-cream socials and parties. We want our residents to have fun.”

When families come in to consider the facility for a loved one, Ashley understands why families can be hesitant and protective. After all, this is often the last stop for a loved one. However, she makes sure to tell them all one very important thing. “You are never going to find a perfect nursing home, just like there is never going to be a perfect school or business,” Ashley says. “However, if you ever come face to face with an issue that concerns you, express it. Let us fix it. The people we have working here love and care for our residents.”

Ashley says that they have lots of volunteers. In fact, this year, they were able to have a dog parade for Memorial Day that residents loved, and an Easter Egg hunt which they invited local daycares to attend. Ashley says the residents loved watching the kids find the eggs, and they would often try to point a hidden egg out to a child who was searching.

Seeing the residents with the kids made Ashley wish she could find more teenage volunteers. She hopes to find a way to partner with local organizations for high school and middle school kids. “Having young

people visit brings them so much joy,” Ashley says. “Some of our residents have families who visit them, but so many of them are the last in their families or have very rare visitors. We want the nursing home to not be seen as a lonely place because we want our residents to think of this as their home. Not only do we provide social activities for residents to visit with each other, we want to bring people to the facility to brighten their day.”

With everything they have planned and are doing to help their residents, they are excited about their new facilities, new ownership and management. Ashley says that the nurses and aides they have working really have a heart for elderly people. “I’m not going to sugar coat it, working in a nursing home is hard work. Our nurses and aides bust their tails every single day,” Ashley says. “They face mental and physical challenges, and some of them have to put up with so much and remain patient. However, without these

excellent nurses and aides, we wouldn’t be up and running.

They deserve so much recognition. They are the backbone of the facility.”

Even though nursing home workers do have to face challenging and sad times at their job, Ashley says that even those times can be worthwhile. For example, it’s helped Ashley appreciate the fragility of life when she sees patients and families who have to face the reality of a stroke or the personality change of dementia. “Faced with these diagnoses daily, I’ve learned that anything can happen. The truth is, we are all going to be here, at this stage, one day,” Ashley says. “Before you work here, you just don’t really dwell on it, but now it’s something I think about a lot. What kind of treatment and care do I want when I get older?

What would I appreciate? That’s why we want our residents to feel like they are at home.”

Guide to the Perfect Holiday Party

•Make a list: Make a list of everything you will need from the food to the number of chairs. This will ensure you have everything and gives you a great checklist.

•Cook ahead: Be able to cook ahead. No one wants to rush on the day of the party. Have food items that are able to be cooked in advance. You can just enjoy yourself and hire a local caterer.

•Stock up on all items: Never run out! If you are wanting the best party, make sure you are stocking up on all items that will be needed for the party, such as food, drinks, plates, etc.

•Keep drinks available: Always have drinks available.

No matter the kind of drinks you will be serving, you do not want to run out!

•Decorate according to your theme: Wake up and start to decorate. Do not wait till 2 hours before and try and rush your plan, it will show.. BUT make sure your have a theme and keep that theme throughout.

•Keep it clean: Being the host of a party, you are to ensure your party area is kept clean. Do your best to

keep the area tidy.

•Create comfortable atmosphere: The atmosphere is important. You will need to make sure it is a comfortable environment for all your guests, whether it is inside or outside.

•Have good music: Sometimes the music is the party.

One can have the music based on your theme (which is also good) or the style of music you like and your guests like.

•Open your door: Have an open door. Do not let your guest feel unwanted or trapped. The door does not have to actually be opened but have open arms for each guest.

•Be grateful: Make sure your guests are leaving happy.

Be grateful that they were able to come and do not feel bad about the ones that were not able to come. Make sure they know that you appreciate them!

•Enjoy your party: Have fun! Enjoy the party you put together. Have a good time with all your friends and family. Make this party a party to remember!

When something does happen, law enforcement or the victim reaches out to DVP. They either contact our 24/7 crisis line, or may even walk in for an appointment with an advocate. Staff can then consult with the victim to create a best course of action following the incident(s), with the victim’s safety in mind. They also have a shelter for those victims who have no place to go while the crisis is being addressed. To provide follow up services, they ensure victims are aware of their support groups, counseling, and other forms of support in the community.

When Terry Carlile recently moved back into the area, he sought an occupation that went well with his public relations background. Having experience with community outreach, he found his new position as DVP’s Director of Marketing and Volunteer Coordinating to be a perfect fit.

“DVP is important because it can be a valuable resource for anyone who finds themselves in violent situations,“ he stated. “I often hear when I visit in our communities, “I wish y’all were around” or “I wish I knew about your program years ago…” With an increased marketing campaign, DVP wants to ensure intersection with as many people, agencies and

business throughout the service area with information on the organization’s services. “Citizens are not aware that there are people who care, willing to offer information, and assist them when it comes to domestic violence and sexual assault issues.

DVP has had several people coming to them with questions or in a tragic situation who found hope and healing. These success stories make us glad we could be a resource during that pivotal time in their life. “Not a day goes by that we are not proud of the work we’ve been able to do in our community. Watching clients come from abusive and stressful circumstances, and leaving our services calm and hopeful is not only rewarding, but fulfilling. We’ve seen so many people come through our office, and we can’t help but be inspired by every success.”

More awareness and prevention training in our communities means more people are informed of the reality of domestic violence. If it’s a family member/ friend, they know who to call. If it’s the victim, they know there are resources available. DVP is steadily working to expand our partnerships with law enforcement, judges and other community support organizations. They also continue to ensure all grant funding requirements are accounted for with integrity. They also plan to identify more individual, business, organizations and grants to secure accomplishing their mission as they serve more people.

1st Choice Pregnancy Resource Center has been helping women (and men) facing an unplanned pregnancy in our community for over 40 years. Our mission is to empower and encourage those affected by an unintended pregnancy to choose life by providing limited medical and consultation services for pregnancy (and pregnancy loss), educational services, and Christian spiritual support.

Kristie Wright, Executive Director, has been a part of 1st Choice since February 2013.

Prior to that time, she had been a financial support but her schedule wouldn't allow her time to volunteer.

"At the end of 2012, I was aware that Kim Banks, the previous Executive Director had left and felt led to apply for her position, having recently decided to leave my previous position at a local law firm. After much prayer, Proverbs 31:8, 'Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves' became the verse that confirmed this was where He wanted me to be," Kristie explains.

1st Choice primarily saves babies' lives, and also change the lives of their moms and dads in a positive way. Beyond that, 1st Choice is a caring, non-judgemental, safe place for people to come when facing difficult circumstances. No one is ever charged for their services.

Women who walk in wondering if they are capable of parenting leave knowing that there are resources to help them if they make that choice, and that adoption is a very loving option that is also available to them.

They gain valuable skills so they are prepared to parent. Through our Earn While You Learn program, clients attend classes and earn Baby Bucks that can be used in our Mommy Store.

Classes cover how to maintain a healthy pregnancy, how to prepare for delivery, how to care for a baby, safety at home and in the car, infant CPR, understanding a child's personality and how that can relate to discipline, potty training, life skills and Bible Study, and many others. There is even a course for daddies only. Items such as maternity and baby clothing, diapers, wipes, toiletries, blankets, and other necessary items are found in the Mommy Store. All these resources empower clients to parent to the best of their ability.

In 2016, 1st Choice served nearly 1200 people. These are men and women who live in our community who come from all walks of life--no one is denied service based on race, socioeconomic status, religion, or sexual orientation. The children of these clients as well as their extended families also benefit from services clients receive at the Center.

The organization now known as 1st Choice started in 1974 with a few caring individuals who wanted to provide emotional and spiritual support for anyone facing a crisis pregnancy, especially those contemplating abortion. Volunteers used space at a local church to meet with the women they assisted.

Eventually, they leased space and

were able to employ staff. Over the years, they have moved several times, each time utilizing additional space to add services such as prenatal and parenting classes, the Mommy Store, and eventually ultrasound services. They have also added postabortion healing as well as abstinence education to their list of services. 1st Choice now operates at 602 Main Street, Tuesday-Friday, has 7 paid staff members, and utilizes over 50 volunteers.

For the future, Kristie tell us that their goals include, "1) ensuring that every abortion-minded or abortion vulnerable woman in our area is aware of our services, making us her 1st Choice for information and support; 2) expanding services to include working with clients on specific concerns to positively impact their lives in the long term (education, housing, self-sufficiency), 3) helping more women find healing from the choice of past abortion(s) and 4) growing our endowment so that one day the organization might be selfsustaining. Each can be achieved through additional community support and involvement."

It is a place to connect them with the necessary tools for rebuilding their lives by teaching them how to overcome challenges. It is a home-like, peaceful atmosphere, safe haven and a place for many to begin their healing process. The Healing place is run by faithful volunteers throughout our community. Those include Support Groups, Women’s Career Development & Job Readiness, Counseling, GED Program, Resource Closet (providing household items to senior citizens and single mothers), Back To School Empowerment Bash, School Presentations, Girls & Young Women Mentoring Programs, Computer Training and Volunteer Opportunities.

"We measure our outcomes by individual needs and success stories," Virginia shares. "This is done by establishing relationships with our clients and by taking a journey a long side them. To sum it up.. We get involved! Our Target Areas: Poverty & Education within our community. About one child in four has a family that struggles to pay for basic needs such as rent, food and utilities. " When adversity in their lives goes unaddressed, many low-income children will enter school without the necessary skills for a strong start and there is a great percentage of children who will never graduate from high school. Is this a problem happening in our communities? Yes! This will cause many parents not to be prepared to compete for the abundance of good jobs

This will become a repeated cycle, domestic violence, teenage pregnancy and an increase of crime. "Do you see the need for community outreach centers? I sure do," Virginia exclaims.

Programs and partnerships are developed based on needs within our community. Outcomes are measured periodically by their board of directors and volunteer program directors.

The numbers of clients continues to increase within our community. They also provide our volunteers with ongoing training, support and scholarship programs through their mentors (Association of Gospel Rescue Missions). The Healing Place is an active member of AGRM. Our goal for the future is to establish well-structured programs by partnering with local churches, businesses, charities and or individuals with a heart for an all about healthier community. By helping to create community conditions that support the region’s most vulnerable families in critical ways, we can increase their chances of having stable housing, finding employment, building a secure future, and raising healthy, confident children who will succeed in school, in college, and life.

What Does A Healthy Community Look Like?: In order to bring about a healthy community; a collaborative approach is needed, by creating a strong network of committed partners, willing to work together in hopes to see a healthier community.

The Healing Place will develop effective programs that will coincide with like-minded individuals to work as partners in the public, private and non-profit sectors – including the regional and local philanthropic community – to create pathways to opportunity for every child and family in need of their services.

to create opportunities and solve their own problems.

With our local partners, we are better able to understand and address the needs of vulnerable families. In order to create a strong community, trust must be earned and welcomed by the community and the partners. This could be established through successful relationship building methods. They are looking for ways to create oneness, kindness, support and love. This is a great opportunity, for The Healing Place to introduce to those they serve the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As a faith-based organization, our main goal is to offer others a chance to a better way of life by having a personal relationship with Jesus.

The Healing Place has made a personal impact in my life and my children's lives in a number of ways.

From the moment of my very first encounter at The Healing Place I have continued to experience an atmosphere that radiates love. My children and I were blessed with a Christmas tree. My oldest daughter, Tatianna, shared that Christmas 2016 was the best Christmas she had ever experienced.

My daughter told me that Ms. Virginia is friendly to her and she admires her. Shortly thereafter, I told Ms. Virginia. Since then, she and my daughter have developed an even greater bond through mentorship. My daughter is learning to walk in her purpose as a royal Black Diamond. As great as it has been to receive from The Healing Place, it has been even greater to give. As a family, my daughters, Grace and Tatianna, have had the opportunity to volunteer at The Healing Place for our 4th Annual Back 2 School Bash. One of the best things about Young Life is the way they make room for every kind of kid, especially students who have no previous involvement in church or who may be indifferent or turned off by the concept of God. They love students where they are, regardless of their responses, in an engaging and challenging way. Through relationships and fun, they reach out to students who may be ignored or overlooked.

Since adolescence Adam Sloan felt a call to ministry. As a child, he dreamt of missionary journeys. As a teen he became a licensed minister and took his first position as a youth pastor.

Since then, he has spent his time pursuing God’s ways and plan for his life, especially as it pertains to ministry for the next generation. In adulthood, he has had the honor of seeing Him orchestrate his childhood dreams, adolescent ambitions, and ministry pursuits in a beautiful new way. This culmination led him in a new direction to local missions through Young Life.

The best part is that he and his wife Emily are answering this call as a husband and wife duo! Adam shares their story...

Young Life doesn't start with a program. It starts with adults who are concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authentic friendship. These relationships don't happen overnight — they take time, patience, trust and consistency.

Their current ministry strategy employs citywide clubs because by crossing state line, school districts, and denominational affiliations, they can do well rounded and inclusive ministry that makes room for every student.

Volunteer leaders, parents, and partners are positively impacted as well. It’s caring adults who take an interest in area youth and the community that ultimately make Young Life work! Leaders volunteer their time to create quality clubs as well as training to lead campaigner groups and attend camps. Two thirds of the leaders are working professionals and teachers, half of which are in active ministry with local churches or have previous ministry training.

The other one third are college students in leader development with Young Life, serving other students. Texarkana is not only a hub to outlying communities for industry and commerce, but for ministry as well. Hopefully Greater Texarkana Young Life will grow as a ministry whose reach extends to both sides of the state line and beyond.

"We grow relationships, build families, mentor and develop leaders, and watch as students come alive through the challenge and adventure found in the message of Christ," Adam explains. "We

Young Life has several goals for the future, which they plan to accomplish through prayer, relationships and training. They include: Develop and build a team of well-rounded leaders with hearts to serve students and build the Kingdom.

Grow our campus and event presence through contact work and ministry partnerships.

Re-establish Campaigners by grouping students with trained leaders.

Double our current volunteer base with quality people called to serve different age groups.

Grow WyldLife and Young Life Clubs through prayer, diligence, and contact work.

Continue to disciple and train college age leaders that serve their peers and younger students.

Continue building a diverse, strong, invested committee to serve our area that are passionate about community and students coming to know Christ.

EVERY KID, EVERYWHERE, FOR ETERNITY "Jurman began attending clubs on Friday nights when he was in 6th grade. I would pick him up and drop him off since his mom was disabled. Jurman wanted to go to Young Life camp that first summer but never told his mom - knowing they wouldn't be able to afford it. When we found out, we raised money to make sure Jurman attended camp. Just a few weeks after returning home from camp Jurman's mom passed away. Jurman and his 3 siblings were all split to go live with different people. He moved from relative to relative before finally moving in with his 19 year old brother. We stayed in contact with Jurman and he continued to attend club and camp again the next summer. In September of 2016 Jurman's brother contacted me and said he could no longer take care of him and asked if Jurman could come live with us. Having 4 children and not fitting in our home I didn't see how this would be possible. My son decided to move out and give Jurman his room. On October 9, 2016, Jurman moved into our home to become part of our family indefinitely. He has changed our home with his upbeat personality and positive perspective on life. Law is one of the world’s oldest professions, dating back to ancient Greece. The first “lawyers” were actually orators (public speakers) who become advocates for people by writing speeches for litigants and occasionally speaking in front of a jury as witnesses for them. However, it was against the law for orators to receive payment for their services and therefore law only became an actual profession when this law was abolished in Ancient Rome – around 200BC! When the law profession was legalized, the criteria to become a lawyer became more difficult than just being a good speaker. By 380BC advocates were studying law and had to be enrolled on the bar of the court, which is quite similar to how it works today.

GENEROSITY WITHIN LIMITS Make the most of your giving nature with this quick tax refresher.

One of the great things about wealth is getting to share it with those you care about, during your lifetime or after. Current tax laws enable you to do just that quite generously. As a quick reminder, here are a few ways you can make the most of your giving nature: Know your limits Federal gift taxes can be as high as 40%. To avoid potential taxation, you should pay attention to the annual exclusion and lifetime gift exemption amounts. The 2016 rules allow an individual to give up to $14,000 per year to as many people as he or she likes; legally married couples can gift twice that amount (i.e., gift splitting). Anything over those amounts will start to chip away

at your lifetime exclusion limits, although those are quite robust – $5.45 million for individuals and $10.9 million for couples for 2016. Gift splitting and any amounts above the annual exclusion require filing a gift tax return.

The gift of education You can pay for a child’s or grandchild’s tuition tax-free, as long as you do so directly to an educational institution. You may give unlimited amounts directly without incurring gift tax, while also giving money to the student up to the annual gift tax exclusion.

Perhaps an even better option is a 529 education savings account, offering numerous benefits, along with a “super fund” feature that really allows you to boost your generosity.

With this feature, you can gift up to $70,000 (per spouse or contributor for 2016) with the understanding that the “super fund” amount covers five years’ worth of gifts. If feasible, kick-starting a plan like this allows those funds a chance to significantly compound while invested.

Any gift can be a great gift You don’t have to give cash to take advantage of tax exemptions.

Stock and personal property can be gifted as well. Just keep in mind that most gifted property must be appraised for its “fair market value” at the time of transfer and that it, too, is subject to the annual and lifetime exclusion limits.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Hurricanes, Water and Pups Last month after Harvey hit the South Texas coast there were a lot of people and animals in danger. People left as best they could, both before and after Harvey came ashore. What is the sad untold story is that some people left their dogs and cats, as well as other livestock, to die in the storm.

As some of you know we took animal food and supplies down on Labor Day. After we made our delivery to a rescue, one of the dog rescue volunteers informed us that there was a volunteer fire department in a rural area about ten miles away that had run out of dog and cat food.

They were down to giving out ½ of a sandwich baggie so they could stretch it out. Paul Sarna and I re-loaded our trailer with about 2,000 pounds of dog and cat food, and someone who knew where to go, and off we went.

When we got there, word had already gotten to them we were coming and they were ecstatic to see us. One lady told me through tears that people were coming to get food for their animals and not for themselves. These people were more concerned about their animals welfare than they were about themselves. Contrast that with the idiots who left their animals to die because they did not feel any responsibility to take them with them when they left. The lady also told us that a couple of blocks away there was a dog rescue that they evacuated with flat bottom boats as the water from a creek was rising. They got 130 dogs out of there before they drowned. Contrast that to the morons who left their animals in crates or chained in yard only to drown in the rising water.

If you own an animal, then it is your responsibility to take care of the animal, PERIOD. End of rant.
