Sunday and don’t update everyone, I receive phone calls, texts, and Facebook messages, making sure I am okay. I love having people who care. I have attended other churches where I could miss 3 months straight and nobody noticed -- even though I was involved in many things within the church. I can feel God’s presence when I walk in the door.
I love my church. Highland Park Baptist Church is an amazing place to rejoice, pray and give thanks for all the things that are happening in your life. We are doing so many wonderful and exciting things right now. We have purchased land, located south of the Wake Village Albertson’s on the loop. Land is being cleared and prepared for a new beginning -- or a continuation of what has become, for me, a wonderful family that truly cares about each other. It never fails that if I miss a

This month, we chose amazing people to share with you. I can remember the very first Cattle Baron’s Ball -- and the second. Both were held outdoors, and lots of prayers were said about the weather. There are stories to tell there! I love this event! What better way to raise money than an amazing ball, filled with wonderful people, silent auction items, food, entertainment -- just anything you could ask for. Make your plans to attend and help raise money for the American Cancer Society. For Chloe and Clee, lots of prayers have been sent to heaven asking for
God’s will. Both are suffering from different health issues. Both need your prayers. Chloe is a delightful child, who has such an amazing attitude toward everything in her life. While taking her photos, we had a lot of fun with the ducks following us around -- in fact, one of those photos is in her article. I loved meeting her and seeing how amazing her spirit is. She is truly Jesus shining through us. Clee is also a happy, smiling baby, who just loves life. He has struggled his whole little life. But he is still such an adorable child. I hope we can bring attention this month to causes that don’t get quite as much exposure. Please remember to pray without ceasing... May God bless you and yours.

STATELINE STAMPEDE CHAIR MEMBERS JEANNA AND MIKE ROGERS AND KIM AND WILLIS JOHNSTON PREPARE FOR TEXARKANA’S FOURTH ANNUAL STATELINE STAMPEDE
For over a century, The American Cancer Society (ACS) has been at the forefront of cancer research, treatment and advocacy to ensure patients are empowered with a fighting chance for survival. Texarkana will continue to contribute to this legacy by hosting the fourth annual Stateline Stampede, the city’s version of the “Cattle Baron’s Ball”, an ACS fundraiser held nationwide. the first year they will work in the capacity of event chairs. The team’s duties involve helping with the formation of event committees, delegating roles and responsibilities, organizing monthly meetings, and ensuring that the planning bodies adhere to deadlines. The complete Stampede committee is composed of Alex Flanagan, Amanda Holley, Amber Gideon, Ashly King, Brandy Mashburn, Brenda Dudley, Brooke Marshall, Candace Hambleton, Don Riddle, Janet Cox, Joe Yates, Kalyse Greener, Kathy Hudson, Kim Rodgers, Laura Riddle, Laura Spicher, LaRee Ballard, Linda Lilly, Lori Hambleton, Melinda Vammen, Randall Hughes, Reena Corbin, Selena Jefferies, and Sherry Liles. For both couples, working on behalf of cancer research and advocacy is particularly personal and poignant. Mike’s father and Jeanna’s mother both died of cancer within three weeks of each other. Willis also knows the pain and frustration of witnessing a loved one battle against cancer. His younger brother, Paul, was diagnosed with cancer not long after returning from serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. His assignment consisted of working with hazardous lasers marking 018 ALT Magazine | October 2016
targets for smart bombs. Despite the severity of his condition, doctors were confident and optimistic regarding his prognosis, while his brother remained realistic, yet hopeful. ”He told me, ‘I’m prepared to die, but I’m going to fight,’”
Willis said. Thanks to significant funding for research, Paul’s doctors administered a treatment which involved using a derivative of the periwinkle flower. Though harsh, the therapy was successful. Paul has been in remission since 1994 and against all odds, went on to be the father of three boys. Similar to many family members of those with cancer, Kim witnessed her mother undergo weekly chemotherapy sessions to treat the effects of Lupus, a debilitating chronic inflammatory disease. These experiences helped fuel her passion to work in support of ACS. Kim was specifically drawn to the organization’s dedication to providing resources for all varieties of cancer. “We want to help [cancer] research everywhere, no matter what kind,” Kim says. “Everyone is
affected by cancer in one way or another. We just want to help do our part.” Fundraisers such as the Stateline Stampede are a part of a national initiative of which the proceeds are distributed back to the local community through a variety of assistance programs. Essential resources offered include transportation, lodging, as well as a 24 hour hotline manned by certified nurses available to provide information on treatment options, side effects and access to other patient needs. Events such as the Stateline Stampede and generous contributions from everyday citizens account for 99% of program and support services for patients. Though cancer has become a prevalent occurrence across families and communities, together we can help preserve millions of lives all over the country for generations to come. For more information on the Stateline Stampede, contact Community Manager, Christal Phiffer Prince at christal.prince@ cancer.org For information on the American Cancer Society and their services visit, www.cancer.org.

PHILIPPIANS 4:13 I CAN DO ALL THIS THROUGH HIM WHO GIVES ME STRENGTH.

t was just an ordinary, average day when twelve-year-old Chloe Cox dove for a ball at her soccer game in April. As she dove to stop the scoring ball, Chloe took a pretty swift kick to the head from the rival team. Her mother, Michelle Cox, noticed that she got up and was holding her head, but she continued playing. This was not unlike Chloe who loved playing soccer and had been playing for the last eight years. Her mother describes her as “comical,” “positive,” and “determined.” However, as the next few
weeks progressed, Chloe continued to complain of headaches and eventually, she was taking Excedrin migraine daily. “I honestly thought it was puberty setting in, and I continued to nudge her out of bed until she began to tell me she felt weak and her head was still hurting even after taking the medicine,” Michelle says. “However, this kick to the head turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I’m not sure we would have been as diligent to monitor Chloe’s symptoms and get her checked out if we weren’t concerned about the concussion.” Michelle wanted to take her to the ER, but Chloe insisted she was fine. She pleaded to be able to continue with her weekend plans to stay at her older sister’s house. Michelle and Matthew have been married for twenty years and have three girls. Michelle works at 2 Friends at Studio 360 and Matthew works at Red River Army Depot. Of the girls, Chloe is the youngest. Corey is 16 and still living at home, and Courtney Cox Foster is married to Justin Foster of Maud, Texas, where they currently reside with their one-year-old daughter Lyla. The family has always been close, so Michelle let Chloe go with her sisters that night. However, Michelle

THE FAMILY HAS BEEN OVERWHELMED WITH SUPPORT FROM THE TEXARKANA COMMUNITY. was awakened by a phone call from Chloe at 3 a.m. crying because she was hurting so bad. Michelle wanted to take her to the ER, but Chloe insisted she was fine and just wanted to come home. The next day, Chloe went to see her friend in a rodeo, but she called her mom and felt so sick she wanted to come home again. This time, Michelle and Matthew rushed Chloe to the Exceed Urgent Care facility where they have a close relationship with nurse practitioner Tonya Dubois. Chloe immediately started throwing up when they arrived. “We remember Tonya taking Chloe’s head into her hands like a mother would a child, and she looked into Chloe’s eyes and said, ‘Chloe, you know you are a weird child, but if you were my weird kid I would have a full workup on you, so I’m sending you to the new Texarkana ER to see Dr. Young and get a CT done,’” Michelle says. “You have to know Chloe. She really is very comical and has a lot of weird things happen! At the time, we just wanted to have peace of mind that everything was OK, so we went to Dr. Young.” After Dr. Young did the CT, he called Michelle and Matthew in and let them know that he 024 ALT Magazine | October 2016
was glad they brought her in to see him because they had found “something” and that he was referring them to Children’s Hospital in Little Rock where they would do an MRI. “From that moment on, all I could think over and over was, ‘How did this happen and why?’ Michelle says. Chloe had a two and a half hour MRI of her brain that showed a growing tumor on her brain and spine. The doctors assured Michelle and Matthew that they would know more after surgery. Chloe had her first surgery on June 9 to make a new pathway for fluid to flow because her walnut sized tumor had completely pinched off the flow in the third ventricle. Fluid was building up in her brain. Thankfully the doctors were able to get a biopsy of the mass, and she did not have to have a port. After surgery, Chloe remained in the hospital for a week. Her pathology took a while to come back because of some strange abnormalities. The Cox family ventured home for their eldest daughter’s wedding, and returned to find out that Chloe had an aggressive grade four glioblastoma multiform in the pineal region, the center of her brain. Her tumor is an adult tumor in a child’s body, but what makes her tumor rare is not only the mutations of the
cells but also the location. It is extremely rare and difficult to remove because it is in the center of her brain and twisted around some extremely important vessels such as breathing. “I remember that night when they showed us her tumor. Reality really set in,” Michelle says. “The doctor looked at us with folded arms and said, ‘You must have really good doctors in Texarkana.’ I looked at my husband wondering what she meant by that, and she explained by saying that typically with Chloe’s age and symptoms of headaches and vomiting, most doctors would pass it off as a virus. She said that many times patients come to them too late to help them,” Michelle says. “If it had gone any longer, she explained that Chloe probably would have had a seizure and never recovered. It was then that I knew God’s hand had been there from the very beginning.” Michelle says that Chloe was really scared and started shaking when they told her the news. But, like any typical preteen, Chloe’s first words were, “Man, my summer is ruined!” Michelle explains, “You have to know Chloe. She just laughed when she said that! Chloe is one of the funniest kids you will ever meet. She sees laughter in some of the things we would be freaking out about. But, she did ask the child life advocate after her first surgery if she was going to die. The lady told her that no one really knows the answer to that because every person and every case was different and God was the only one who knows the answer.” The family’s relationship with God has grown tremendously over the last few months of Chloe’s journey. The family started attended Northside Assembly in Texarkana in January because their daughter, Corey, had been attending

the youth program and urged the rest of the family to check it out. “I feel as a family our growth together started then,” Michelle says. “Our relationship and faith and encouragement from others has literally carried us through this entire time.” Chloe’s second surgery was scheduled for June 29 to remove what they could of the tumor. The Cox family was extremely apprehensive going into the surgery because one wrong move could cause immediate death or loss of mobility or eyesight. “We were very unsure as to what Chloe’s life would be like after surgery, but we knew that God
026 ALT Magazine | October 2016
was in control. We had about 19 people praying and waiting during the ten hour surgery,” Michelle says. While they were waiting on Chloe to come out of surgery, Michelle began to meditate on her family and the choices her and Matthew made through the years. “What I learned from this experience is that the things we thought were so important are not, and they can wait,” Michelle says. “As parents, we get caught up in work, things to take care of at home, after school practices four times a week, and sporting events. We would go on a family vacation once a year if we were lucky and if nothing
unexpected came up. We have realized that even though we have always been involved parents, sometimes our life was so chaotic that we forfeited true sit-down dinner time and family time because we were going in opposite directions with three active kids. There will always be a house to clean, overtime to work, and sporting events to go to but life is short, and you never know when you might look up and a loved one isn’t there anymore. I don’t want us to keep saying, ‘We should have done this, or we should have sat down and savored our time together.’ Stop, breathe, enjoy the moment and get to know your kids

again. Since I’ve had more one-on-one time with Chloe, I have heard more stories about things I never knew, and it made me realize how much I missed because I was always rushing here or running there.” Chloe came out of surgery, but the surgeon was only able to remove about 80% of the tumor. Chloe’s cerebellum was bruised from the trauma of surgery so they were told it would be weeks before Chloe could chew or even swallow food, and that she would have to have occupational therapy and physical therapy to regain her balance and coordination. The doctors told Michelle and Matthew that she would be in the hospital for at least five weeks, and then treatment would begin for the tumor left behind. For the last several months, Michelle has been updating her Facebook page with stories from Chloe’s journey. The social media outlet has allowed friends and family to share their encouragement with Chloe, and the family has been overwhelmed with support from the Texarkana community. Liberty Eylau hosted a prayer vigil bake sale and a backpack fundraiser; Cigainero Enterprises held a t-shirt fundraiser; friends and family sold bracelets and t-shirts to help with bills since Michelle has been out of work since June; Buchanan Baptist held an auction and barbeque; Christian Warriors held a garage sale benefit; Michelle’s coworkers at Studio 360 are hosting a rodeo in Foreman; Danny Rateliff’s hair salon took on Michelle’s clients and donated the money from her clients back to her; and Fat Jacks had a benefit. On October 29, Liberty Eylau will be having a garage sale fundraiser for Chloe during their fall festival at Liberty Eylau High School. On the same day, the American Legion Post in New Boston will be having a bake sale, poker room, and silent auction fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “We have been so blessed from the support of our family, friends, and friends of family and friends we have never met,” Michelle says. “It has left us speechless at times. My husband and I have always worked hard to provide the best for our family. It has been hard for all of us because we have had to adjust and rely on friends and family to help. This has been different for our family because we’ve never liked to ask for help. We would much rather be on the giving end
028 ALT Magazine | October 2016
than the receiving end for sure! We are so grateful.” When Michelle scrolls back through her posts over the past few months, one of her favorites is a funny story from two weeks after the surgery. Chloe showed some panic when she realized that she could not speak after surgery, so she developed some signals to communicate with her mother. One day, Chloe was looking at Michelle and rolling her hands, and Michelle was having a hard time trying to figure out what she wanted. “I ask if something is wrong with her head, or if it’s her feet, and I decide her feet are hurting. I put a pillow under her feet, and she gives me this hilarious look. A week later when she regains speech, she tells me that she wanted to scream, “Mom, I just had brain surgery! I wanted a pillow for my head, not for my feet!’ This is just so representative of the humor my daughter has,” Michelle says. After only three weeks in the hospital, Chloe cried for the first and only time which ironically made Michelle happy. They were told that crying was actually a sensory that would take some time to come back, but Chloe was crying at week three. When Michelle asked her what was wrong, Chloe said she wanted to go home. So, Michelle “marched” to the nurses’ station and said, “Look, she wants to go home, and she needs to before her main treatment starts, so how do I make that happen?” Chloe’s medical team met and told Michelle that their main concern was the feeding tube that Chloe still had in place, but Chloe expressed desire to do another swallow test to show she could go home without the tube. The doctors all said that it had only been a week and a half since she left the PICU and that she would not pass a swallow test for another four weeks. “I wanted to give Chloe her chance before we ruled it out,” Michelle says. “So, I told them, ‘Well, we are going home, so let’s do one anyway just to be sure!’ They performed the test per our request, and she passed with flying colors because of all the prayers going up for her. The speech pathologist came in jumping up and down because it was a miracle and she couldn’t believe it! Because of this, Chloe was able to come home for a few

weeks before she and I went to Houston to M.D. Anderson for six weeks of IMRT VMAT radiation with chemo.” The family has continued to remain positive even after Chloe and Michelle moved to Houston for the time that Chloe would begin treatments. “You never plan for your family to be separated by a family illness,” Michelle says. “I think it has been really hard on my husband who is at home taking care of the rest of our family and the house and farm animals on top of a full time job that he has to keep in good standing so that we keep insurance for Chloe’s treatments. He is literally exhausted, and I worry because he travels back and forth when there are important appointments and decisions on treatments for Chloe.” Though Chloe had to miss the volleyball tryouts she had been working hard for and the beginning of her eighth grade year, she remains thankful and positive in the midst of trying circumstances. “Chloe never complains, and she wins the hearts of everyone she is around because she is so gracious. She thanks everyone, even the people who come to clean our room,” Michelle says. “She told me one day, ‘Mom, I just want to tell you thank you, and I appreciate everything you do for me.’ I told her that there was no need to thank me; I am doing this because I want to, and I never want to leave your side. I said, ‘I wish I could take this from you.’ She said, ‘No, mom I wouldn’t want you to have this,’ I said, ‘Why? So that you wouldn’t have to take care of me?’ She started laughing and said, ‘Yes, I don’t want to have to change your dirty diapers for sure!’ This is just another example of her humor. She is never selfish and always thinks of others. She even apologizes constantly, and I say, ‘Chloe, don’t ever apologize baby! You have nothing to apologize for!’ She thinks she is an inconvenience, and I always tell her never to think that. We would give up everything we have to get her better. I tell her, ‘Nothing is more important right now besides getting you better!’” Chloe had a repeat MRI five weeks after her big surgery, and they found that the part of the tumor that was left behind had already quadrupled in size. There are not a lot of answers for the Cox family as information on this very aggressive tumor is currently unavailable. Doctors can only base prognosis and statistics on an adult outcome because

Fish Tales with Mike Brower ALASKA... Last month Debbie and I went on our third vacation together in 27 years. We went on an Alaskan cruise, which by the way was a GREAT time. When we stopped in Juneau for the day I went on a guided fly-out fly fishing trip. (Yes, I know how to fly fish. It’s not pretty but I can.) We flew about 20 minutes out of Juneau, landed in a small cove and then proceeded to hike a little more than a mile to where we fished. The hike was a good workout as we hiked through rocks, mud, grass, fallen trees, grass covering rocks and fallen trees, while wearing waders. Once to the river, creek or whatever you want to call it, we were greeted by a female brown bear about 50 yards away fishing in the part of the creek we were going to fish. (I got a good pic of her, too). She stayed about 10 minutes and then wandered off. We were fishing for Dolly Varden in a creek about 30 feet wide and 2-3 feet deep. They were feeding on the salmon roe as the salmon were spawning. To make a long story short we got to fish about 2 hours and I caught between 25 and 30 fish, with about that many coming unbuttoned due to the barbless hooks we used. It was a blast, even though they were not more than 2 pounds. I had a great time. One of our group, BD Handley (from over by Lake Fork,) even bagged a nice Sockeye salmon. For a few minutes I contemplated asking how much it would cost for me and one guide to stay for a few more hours and have a plane come back for us, but some of our group had struggled to get in and would struggle to get out as the tide was coming in and the tide change is 25 feet. It was a great time and I already have the cost, flights, and motel info to go back and just fish for a couple of days next year. Oh, and yea, the cruise was great, too!

very mother regards her pregnancy with a special all encompassing awe. She’s enamored with tiny features, precious expressions and gestures only her mind’s eye has imagined, her belly’s felt. She loves fiercely and absolutely, sight unseen. Even when the unexpected occurs, there’s nothing that can deter her from that affection and dedication. Despite numerous complications from a rare and untreat-
able condition, for parents Hailey and Dale Needham, their son Clee was the perfect package from the very start. Though the pregnancy with Clee was a surprise, the Lockesburg, Arkansas natives happily welcomed the exciting news. Other than a few problems during her first two trimesters, Hailey fondly recalls Clee being healthy and very active in the womb. “He had hiccups all day it seemed and loved to wake me up kicking through the night.” Yet, around 32 weeks, she went in for a routine OB check up with a few questions. She had recently gained a significant amount of weight in a small amount of time, resulting in her belly growing to an almost painful size. “My doctor measured my belly and told me I was measuring 12 weeks bigger than I should have been, so we were sent for an ultrasound to look at Clee’s size and my fluid levels.” The response of the medical staff was troubling. Their swift actions foreshadowed alarm. “Normally the tech would

let me see whatever I wanted, but that day was quick and rushed.” Moments later, Hailey and her husband received the news that their baby had a very large tumor, or cystic mass, protruding from his head and neck. Hailey and her husband were then sent to UT Southwestern in Dallas so that Clee’s birth could be properly strategized with the most appropriate surgeons. Baby Clee’s face was very pronounced and enlarged. “The mass was compared to a large grapefruit taking over the right side of his face.”
of a breathing tube or tracheotomy, the umbilical cord is cut and the baby is fully delivered.
Clee was born with Lymphatic Malformation (LM) to his face, neck, tongue and mouth. It is a disease that affects the lymphatic system causing the affected areas to “kink and knot” resulting in cystic lesions. “The cysts can be small (microcystic) or large (macrocystic),” Hailey says. “It affects his breathing, swallowing and required him to have a feeding tube and a tracheostomy (breathing tube in the neck) when he was just 3 days old.” LM can affect many parts of the body, though it most often Eventually, Hailey and her husband were asked to relocate to the hospital in Dallas for the remain- targets the face and will usually arise somewhere between birth and 2 years of age. of LM and stop the any further growth). Maintaining Clee’s health requires several forms of assistance, yet, Hailey’s experience working as a nurse in pediatric home health is a definite asset to Clee’s overall development. “He breathes from his trach, eats from a tube in his belly, is non-verbal, and has a lowered immune system,” Hailey says. During the seasons when illnesses are at their peak, as a preventative measure, Clee is often not able to leave the house for days at a time. “Difficult days with Clee are rare, but when they happen, they hit him hard. A simple cold or runny nose can mean an admission for him at Children’s [Hospital],” Hailey says. “He has been airlifted for respiratory distress. Surgery days are harder for him as well. Anytime they work on his LM, it becomes aggravated and can swell and bleed, causing a lot of discomfort for him. His trach can “plug off” if his secretions get too dry or thick which can also cause problems.” Nevertheless, Hailey remains hopeful and optimistic for his continued development and asserts most of his days are good days. “He has therapy three days a week to help with his delays, and hopefully in the future we can remove the trach and feeding tube,” Hailey says. “He is becoming more and more active...learning to sit up without assistance... and has just learned how to swallow small bites of baby food.”

around his big brother, Tucker (4).” Hailey learned about the ALT Cutest Baby Contest through Facebook, where she also has a page dedicated to updating Clee’s many supporters in the community on his health and progress. Fans from all over the area and beyond comment with prayers and encouragement for the precious little boy with a heart melting smile. Aside from being thrilled with Clee winning with an overwhelming number of votes, Hailey views the award as an opportunity to uplift all children regardless of their conditions. “I’d like to thank ALT for holding the contest and allowing us the chance to spread more awareness about our son’s rare disease. Most babies born with LM
are considered “disfigured”, so Clee winning this contest was wonderful. He is not defined by how his face looks. We want our boys to know that everyone is different and unique in their own way, whether they are “normal” or not. I want moms and dads to know that no matter what, your children are beautiful,” she says. Though at times, Clee has endured trying days on his journey, Hailey is reassured with each day she gets to witness his innocent joy and resilience. “I had never heard the words Lymphatic Malformation until having Clee and I want others to know that while it may come with some scary moments, they’ll be the best moments of your life. Watching my son smile and laugh and be such a happy baby through all of his medical problems is inspiring.”

Local Hot Spots SEPTEMBER 14, 2016- CHRISTUS ST. MICHAEL, TEXARK ANA, TX
“100 YEARS OF HEALING” Christus St. Michael welcomed a century of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ with a celebration of Holy Mass with the Most Reverend Joseph Strickland, Bishop of Tyler, Texas as Celebrant. The Most Reverend Anthony Taylor was Concelebrant. Music was presented by Marc-Andre Bougie and Michelle Karam along with Sacred Hart and St. Edward Parish Choirs. The St. Michael story began humbly when the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate WordHouston were invited to Texarkana by the city fathers to establish and operate a hospital for the “treatment of all poor and indigent persons in need of medical attention and other persons as the trustees under the rules and regulations permit.” The hospital was named after a Catholic Irishman an civil engineer, Michael Meagher, who left his entire estate for the establishment of a hospital in Texarkana to meet health care needs and “serve those who are ill, regardless of race, religion, or economic status.” 100 years later, Michael Meagher’s vision lives on as CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System continues to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

Safety Tips Younger children should always walk with an adult. Older children should always walk in a group. Use a flashlight, glow sticks, or reflective tape to make it easier to be seen at night. Do not go to any dark, unlit houses. Do not go inside a stranger’s house. Cross at crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before you cross. Walk, don’t run! Pay attention when walking across driveways to make sure cars aren’t pulling in or out. Wear non-toxic make up instead of a mask, which may hinder sight. If you wear a mask, make sure it fits well.
Costume accessories, such as swords, shouldn’t be sharp. They should be soft and flexible. Do not eat any candy until an adult checks it. Eat only factory wrapped candy and stay away from homemade treats or candy. Parents, keep an eye out and drive safe!
Costumes and shoes should fit to avoid trips and falls.
