Back in 1997 when they were determining the best use of their acreage, Pago and Steven consulted various professionals, with Bill Christopherson, arguably the father of the wine industry at the time, their greatest influence. Bill helped with the planting of their first vines and more importantly passed on his passion. His wine making methods were unique and remarkably effective. Pago says, “Bill would buy electric blankets and wrap them around the barrels to get just the right temperature.” Pago and Steven planted their first vines in 2001 and two years later their cellar door opened offering tastings, coffee and light snacks. From there success grew with hard work, perseverance and a vision of what was to come. In 2005 the barrel room was converted into a restaurant and since then its popularity has grown. Por la encantadora y ondulante A-3210, unos 4 km más adelante, aparecen las hojas de titanio púrpura del hotel Marqués de Riscal. Su equilibrio dibuja la corona del edificio. La estructura se asoma con magia sobre el paisaje de la provincia de Alava y ondula sobre Elciego. Este pueblo, de coloridas casas de piedra caliza, refleja la obra de Gehry en sus pequeñas ventanas y gruesas paredes. Es recomendable una caminata por Elciego. Desde allí se aprecia como la corona, ese nido de pájaros hecho de hojas púrpuras de titanio, pende sobre cada uno de los viejos edificios del pueblo. El nido cambia de posición cada vez que el caminante modifica su perspectiva. :FE;L:@<E;F ?8:@8 el interior del comple-

jo Marqués de Riscal , se avanza hacia el lobby del hotel y el parking. Amable personal se hace cargo de su vehículo y le asigna un espacio bajo la pérgola de alambre con hiedra. En el lobby y en las terrazas externas, sorprenden las vistas de Elciego. El punto focal es la iglesia del pueblo, la plaza parece quedar al alcance de los dedos. La base de piedra caliza del edificio también abraza con elegancia las áreas bajas de producción, almacenamiento y oficina que han sido planeadas de manera exquisita. También se aprecia un ancho perfil de piedra caliza en la cima del edificio.

Located off the AP-68 on the way to Gehry’s iconic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, exit at Cenicero. After locating the lovely and winding A-3210 continue some 4 km. and one comes into view of the tumbling purple titanium leaves that form the crown of the Marques de Riscal Hotel. This crown has a magical way of hovering over the landscape of the Alava province, including the limestone buildings of Elciego, notable for their color, small windows and very thick walls. I recommend a walk around Elciego, to observe how the titanium crown, or bird’s nest made of purple titanium sheets, perches on each of the old buildings of the town, appearing to shift positions each time you change your approach. ;I@M< @EKF the Marques de Riscal complex, and

The hallways leading to them do not inspire as they express a humble functionality. But the rooms give way to pleasant anticipation with their window seats enveloping dramatic glimpses of surrounding vineyards of Rioja’s proud Alava province. Cool details, such as Gehry’s paper lighting fixtures are unexpected and keep the hotel fresh. The outdoor terrace “Wine Bar Enoteca” on the ground floor offers a great views and one can order from a wide range of superb Marques de Riscal wines from a small bar. In July, the terrace is scorching long into the evening, but the air, light and views are so special, that its worth the slight inconvenience. My travel companion and I admired the beautiful and formal gastronomic restaurant on the second floor and chose to have dinner in the younger and more trendy restaurant on the same floor, cosseting us in stylish luxury. The rooftop lounge is worth a special visit, although service can be scarce.

and swam in a wonderful indoor pool, lined in black tile, before taking a tour of the winery. The winery is a gigantic commercial operation, producing 4.5 million bottles a year. A 1958 Riscal gran reserva today is a beautiful wine, subtle and pleasant. But alas Riscal has stopped making these types of wines, today opting even in its gran reservas for dark colors and large hints of fruit in the mouth.

During the ﬁrst weekend in September, Begur is transformed to revive that historic period that has left a profound mark on the town and on its identity. Thanks to its geographical characteristics, Begur is an ideal place for hiking. The environmental conditions are ideal for ageing wine, as the barrel cave is a metre and a half underground. The winery has a fermentation section at a controlled temperature, a preservation section and another for homogenisation.
