Fest i val s and Chinese New Year Before switching to the Western calendar in 1912 China used their own calendar to mark the New Year based upon astronomical signs. On the New Year Chinese households stop daily activities. All the focus is turned from the usual parts of life such as jobs and focused on the household and family. During the days before the New Year people clean their houses to rid them of "huiqui" (unpromising words) from the previous year. People also write lucky messages in scrolls and put them on their gates and light firecrackers to scare off evil spirits. The most important part of the Chinese New Year is the feast with families. All the family sits together and the dinner is meant to help to renew family ties. Now even though China has adopted the Western calender, China still celebrates the New Year when they originally did.

It originated from the province of Gansu in West China. The influences of this dance were introduced through the Silk Roads. Dancers normally hold ribbons in their hands and move the ribbons around in the air while dancing to manipulate the shape and flow of the ribbon to the music of the orchestra.

Barongan Dance, Indonesia This dance has a strong element of trance and worship, and it originated from Central Java, Indonesia. It re-enacts the battle between demon queen, Rangda and the lion, Barong. An old story that has been passed down talks about a fight between the good and the evil. After Ragda?s husband dies, she practices black magic to get evil spirits to attack Erlangga, their son, who became king after his death. Erlangga asks for help from Barong, who eventually is able to run Rangda off into the jungle. Before this dance begins, a priest will offer prayer and placing on the characters, especially on the Barong and Rangda masks.
