The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, says all is set for the unveiling of the statue in honour of the Jamaican cultural icon, Miss Lou. Miss Lou’s statue will be mounted in Gordon Town, St Andrew where she lived before moving to Toronto, Canada. Minister Grange says she’s “happy to see this project finally coming to fruition and I thank all the stakeholders, including the residents of Gordon Town, the MP Mrs Juliet Holness, Mayor Delroy Williams, Miss Lou’s estate and Jamaicans in the Diaspora — particularly those in Canada — who have assisted the project.” The statue, done by sculptor Basil Wat-

Senator Reid added that he wants to see more young people who engage in illegal activities take up training opportunities and become employed, thereby contributing as productive members of society.

Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says the Government of Jamaica is willing to offer full scholarships to young people involved in crime and non-productive activities to enable them to pursue academics or skills training. In an interview with JIS News at Excelsior Primary and Infant School in St. Andrew on Monday (September 3), during his tour of three schools at the start of the 2018/2019 academic year, Senator Reid said the Government is reaching out to these youth, through members of Parliament and government agencies that provide training opportunities. “A part of my job is to make sure that our children have access to education to the highest level, and we have to work now with our members of Parliament, the Ministry of National Security and the community to now transition, to change the culture of violence,” he pointed out.

“I know the members of Parliament have been encouraging many of these wrongdoers to come back to school and I am appealing to them, anybody… who is ready to go back to school. We want them to be educated and trained,” he said. “The Government will make sure you have full scholarship to achieve your full potential, because we must transform Jamaica into a culture of productivity by the development of our human potential,” he noted. In addition to Excelsior Primary and Infant, Minister Reid also visited Wolmer’s Boys and Jessie Ripoll Primary to observe their operations during the first day of school. Minister Reid spoke with grade-six students at Jessie Ripoll and Excelsior Primary schools, who will be sitting the first Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examination next year, and encouraged them not to be fearful of the inaugural series of tests they will undertake.

Grange signs historic sports cooperation agreement with China Minister Grange said it was the first time that so many Jamaican athletes would benefit directly from a bilateral sports cooperation agreement.

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has described the sports cooperation agreement which she signed in the Chinese capital today (Friday) as “historic and extremely beneficial”. Minister Grange and the General Manager of China Sport International Company (the state-owned sports cooperation agency) Mr Lu Guoguang officially signed the agreement which will see more than 400 Jamaican athletes travelling to China for training over the next three years.

“Our athletes have natural abilities but need assistance and the Government of Jamaica can only do so much, and so we sincerely thank you for the current project and we believe that the benefits are of tremendous value to our athletes,” said the Minister. Although the signing of the document took place only today, implementation of the programme began in January of this year when a contingent of Chinese coaches and administrators arrived in Jamaica to assess certain national teams, collaborate with local coaches and administrators,

and prepare for the first batch of 138 Jamaican athletes and coaches to arrive in China. The first batch — representing seven disciplines: Synchronised Swimming, Gymnastics, Swimming, Badminton, Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Football and Women’s Basketball — is currently completing 60 days of intense training at specialised facilities across China. Mr Lu (speaking through an interpreter) said the Jamaican athletes made tremendous strides during training: “In the two months we have made great improvement. The first (main) improvement is the record of your athletes and in the two months together, the athletes from Jamaica and China live, eat and train together and have built a great relationship between each other.” Ahead of signing the agreement in Beijing, Minister Grange travelled to some of the training centres in the cities of the Changsha and Kunming to observe the facilities, receive progress reports on the athletes from their Jamaican coach-

es and Chinese trainers, and to hear from the athletes their impression of the programme. They all reported that the first year of the programme has been a success. Minister Grange said: “I’m happy to see first hand the vast improvement in the skill level of our athletes and to tour the facilities. Our athletes have now been exposed to world class training facilities and to world class coaching and we will make sure that your investment is not wasted. We want to ensure that the infrastructure is in place for them to do well when they return to Jamaica and so we want to look at the development of our national stadium, for example.” Under the agreement, the Chinese government will also donate equipment to the seven sporting disciplines. The equipment is to arrive in Jamaica this year. Source: www.jis.gov.jm Photo: JIS Photographer

Jamaica’s Film Industry Contributes $1.2 Billion to Local Economy $1.2 billion was allocated, up from $745 million in the previous year, representing a 65 per cent increase.

Film Commissioner at Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), Renée Robinson, highlights the performance of the local film industry during a JIS interview.

Film Commissioner at Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), Renée Robinson, says the local film industry performed remarkably for the 2017/18 financial year, contributing a record $1.2 billion in film production expenditure to the local economy. Film production expenditure, which relates to the value of the production budget that comes into the island to offset the services rendered, shows that for the 2017/18 fiscal period, some

in Jamaica.

Miss Robinson pointed out that this was the first time the figure had exceeded $1 billion, noting that the expenditure is the value of the budget that international productions spend

“So, this would be to hire cast, crew, drivers, rental of equipment, anything that is part of the production process that is being spent in Jamaica,” she added. Some 124 international film productions took place over the period and generated 2,781 jobs. Miss Robinson explained that the Commission is able to differ-

entiate and segment the types of productions that are shot on the island by tracking through the film registration process. “Documentary productions led the genres, with 35 documentaries filmed in Jamaica over the period, up from 17 in the previous year, and TV productions followed with 24, up from 15 in 2016/17,” the Film Commissioner said. Three feature films were shot on the island: ‘Yardie’, directed by Idris Elba; ‘Like Father’ and ‘The Intent 2’. For the first time, a webisode production was filmed in Jamaica. “We also had some high-profile productions filmed in Jamaica over the period, including ‘Caribbean’s Next Top Model’, and we were fortunate enough to shoot the entire season. We also shot an episode of ‘The Amazing Race Israel’ and an episode of ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’,” the Film

Commissioner informed. Other prominent productions included the ‘Pretty Bird’ music video for Beyoncé and Jay-Z; ‘Perfect Places’ music video by Lorde, and ‘Candice Patton’ by America’s Next Top Model celebrity guest judge, Kelly Cutrone. “So, there has been quite a bit of activity in the local film industry as we tracked the various international productions that come into the island and the local personnel and services that they utilise for their projects. We are committed to improving our tracking and monitoring strategies,” Ms. Robinson said. The Commission is mandated to promote the Jamaican film industry through facilitation of activities that increase investment, export and employment in the sector. "The power of Music - bringing people together"

A pocket history dictionary of Irish traditional music defines tradition music as a broad-based system which accommodates a complex process of musical convergence, coalescence and innovative overtime. It involves different types of singing, dancing and instrumental music developed over the course of several centuries. Traditional music is essentially oral in character and is transmitted from one generation to the next through a process of performance. Experi-

enced musicians are capable of memorizing up to five hundred pieces of music, some of which they play regularly, while others may lie dormant for years. The Federal Government’s Strategic Contemporary Music Industry defines contemporary music as music that is currently being written, recorded and performed. Its genres would include, but not limited to blues, country, electronic/dance, experimental, folk, funk, hiphop, jazz, metal, pop, rock, roots, among others. Over the years, people play music everywhere in car, house,

bank, supermarket, grocery store and even in the oďŹƒce. Music can also change the mood of persons when people are stressed or depressed. Although different people like different music, music could bring people to communication and brings different people together. It is my belief that Music takes a part in our life. Music has been an expression of many people from different cultures around the world for centuries. Music is celebrated by cultures and music creates cultures itself. Every country has it unique traditional music also with its traditional instruments. In Jamaica, the drums, guitars, keyboards among others are used in expressing ourselves especially in non-traditional Churches. At times, listening to the traditional music and looking to the traditional instruments, people could guess what type of culture and what country it is from.

music, the young generation can express themselves freely and it is good for the development of music in the world. Young generation combined those genres and makes the globalization, a way of earning money and also for the entertainment. In conclusion, both traditional music and the contemporary music are very important. With traditional music, people could see the uniqueness of a country and also the culture and history of a country itself. The modern music is also important because with the contemporary music, the young generation could express their expressions more freely, makes music development better in years, and discovers more new kind of music and genre. Both kinds of music have one same important reason why they exist; that’s to bring people together. Contributed by His Excellency Professor Colin O Jarrett, Jamaica

Honourable Lisa Thompson, Minister of Education, issued the following statement: "I would like to officially welcome all of Ontario's students back to school. My hope for the 2018-19 school year is that students successfully continue on their academic journeys, and also use this opportunity to develop new hobbies and interests. Whether it's academics, arts or athletics, we encourage everyone to work hard and

Yesterday, we released a new teacher's guide and parent fact sheet that will help both teachers and parents focus student learning on traditional formulas and memorization techniques. We've also announced that we are refocusing $55 million in existing math investments to district school boards. This funding will support math facilitators and leads at the school board and school levels, as well as provide release-time for our teachers to participate in training and learning focused on the fundamentals of math. Education Minister, the Honourable Lisa Thompson, issued the following statement on the provincial EQAO results: "The EQAO assessment results released today prove once again that we must do better with respect to students' math performance in Ontario. For the last five years, we have seen an overall decline in EQAO math scores. Half of Ontario's Grade 6 students have failed to meet the provincial standard for math. And by the time our students get to Grade 9, more than half of them taking the applied math courses are failing to make the grade. This is unacceptable. The previous government used our children's classrooms to test a failed experimental curriculum called "Discovery Math". As promised, our government has already made changes to bring back proven methods of teaching that work.

Although our government has already started to take the necessary steps to improve our children's understanding of fundamental math, we look forward to hearing from parents and educators this September as we engage in unprecedented provincewide public consultations. These consultations will cover a variety of topics that will help inform changes to the mathematics curriculum. We look forward to sharing more detailed information on the consultation process in the coming weeks. Our government believes that by getting back to the basics we're ensuring our students are leaders in math education once again. We are committed to ensuring students have the skills they need to be successful in their future."

Dancehall-reggae artiste I-Octane is excited about the success of his self-produced single 'Hot World' I-Octane said the song has been getting a lot of support because it is relatable. He explains that the song encourages people to work hard, as their dreams can be realised even if it happens later than expected. "This song appeals to literally everybody, no matter the age group. It's about believing in yourself and working for your own things," he said. The track has already been getting good traction in Jamaica, and is expected to do even better when the music video is released, which is expected to be soon.

Jahmiel Featured in HBO Hit Series 'Ballers' oms and veteran stars alike, but his role in their lives far exceeds money management as he struggles to help them navigate the many traps that comes with life as a big-time "ballers".

New York, New York (August 28, 2018). With a jam-pact touring schedule since the start of 2018 and focusing on expanding his international fan base, Jahmiel continues to make major strides in building the foundation for a solid career as an artist. Over the past weekend, Sunday August 26th, Jahmiel's single 'Heaven', produced by Chimney Records was featured in the HBO hit series Ballers. Premiered in 2015 on HBO, Ballers depicts a superstar during his football playing days, Spencer Strasmore, played by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, trying to find the same success as a financial manager for current players in sun-splashed Miami. Heeding his boss Joe's instruction to "monetize his friendships", Spencer builds a client base of young phen-

The single 'Heaven', was originally released in 2017, is the background song to a scene where agent Jason Antolotti and footballer Vernon Littlefield are having a conversation about the ladies over a few beers. As the agent gets familiar with his player, you can hear the voice of Jahmiel in the background, setting the ambiance for a rather happy, chill vibe by the water, as two men navigate their way out of a possible 'trap'. The song, which talks about the happy life a man want to live every day, and pushing forward every morning to keep his life style up, like heaven, because he never wants to go back to the broke days, definitely sets the scene for the conversation taking place. Since his 2015 breakthrough hit single 'Gain the World', propelled him on the international scene, Jahmiel has continued steady growth while defying the norm, touring and finishing up his debut album. Jahmiel is off to Canada for two shows this weekend and set to release a few videos in the upcoming weeks.

The artiste, who followed the likes of Bob Marley and Sugar Minott to form his own label, Conquer The Globe Productions, told THE STAR that the business side of his career is paying off. "There will be a day when I just want to ease back and watch the fruits of my labour. This label is already doing that with this song. Production is a very important aspect of the music, and when you sit back and bask in the fact that you created this art from scratch, both vocally and musically, the feeling is great," he said.

This isn't the first time I-Octane has worked professionally under his own label, as the singer had previously produced tracks for his album Love and Life under the imprint. The artiste recently caught the eyes of the international press when Billboard magazine writer Pat Meschino described him as a one of the island's most outstanding performers. Having been made aware of Meschino's comments, I-Octane expressed happiness that he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Alexx A-Game Release His Single Double Featuring Tory Lanez

New York , New York (August 31, 2018) "The inspiration behind the track "Double" came from a thought process I had and a theory I developed from it. For me to be as great as I want to be then I have to put in twice as much work as there are challenges. In other words, the grind must out weigh the struggles for me to surpass them. From there I developed the concept of doubling up on everything positive so I can overwrite the negative" says Alexx - A -Game. The track, which gives you a 'neo-pop' style will definitely appeal to a wide array of music lovers. Both artists compliment each other on the track presenting a song, which will definitely be heard on your airwaves.

Since its recent release, Double has received features in major international and national platforms such as Source Magazine, Riddim Magazine, HipHopWeekly, just to name a few. With the initial traction around the single, many are saying this will be the single to get Alexx A Game into the international scene and solidify Tory Lanez in the Caribbean market due to the refreshing style he brings across on this track. over 5 years and is finally attaining the recognition and notoriety he deserves. Currently Alexx A-Game is continuing to work with international producers and artists and set to make a major announcement in the coming weeks. “I’m working assiduously with my family and team to become the leader and game-changer I set out to be. I am a musician first and that is the discipline and difference that I feel will help me as an artist to rise above the mediocrity of the Jamaican music industry as it is.

A Tweet for Justice Resonates as Morgan Heritage Presents Mojo Morgan #BEFREE feat Gramps Morgan and Stephen Marley me since 13th August and what is next.” - @ HeBobiWine, the latter became viral as the song's spirit embodies the "Bobi Wine's" of the world.

USA, Jamaica (MPR CONSULTING) - In a serendipitous social media moment where GRAMMY award-winning Morgan Heritage's own Mojo Morgan dedicated his forthcoming single "Be Free" to multi-award winning Ugandan recording artist-turned politician Bobi Wine after reading his tweet "Safely arrived in the US where I'll be receiving specialised treatment following the brutal torture at the hands of SFC soldiers. We thank the world for standing with us. I will soon tell you what exactly happened to

"So let me lead the rebellion, 1 billion soldiers full of conviction, Determination to rock the nation, Caution to each and every nation , This is an invasion of the next generation" sings Mojo Morgan as a call-to-action anthem. "Be Free" featuring Mojo's sibling Gramps Morgan and multi-GRAMMY award-winning Stephen Marley is beffiting of what both Reggae Royalty families have stood and still stand for as The Marley's and Morgan's who are more than just childhood friends carrying on their father's legacies. The lead single from Mojo's forthcoming full length-album was organicly created with inspiration from the single “Caution" from the legendary

Wailers first album “The Best of The Wailers” released in 1971. "Not many people can relate to our respective families path, and because of that unique bond for the past decade Stephen has been a close advisor, confidant and lending ear. Combined with his amazing production skills, and the song's inspiration from his father, it made sense to unite on BE FREE." explained Mojo. "When I wrote the chorus, I felt it was a powerful message that could only be delivered in Gramps voice. It is a distinct voice that is full of love, soul and heart, able to deliver a message to resonate in hearts of humanity globally. This song aims to inspire the millennials who often get a bad wrap because they are doing things different from our parents. But in this technological age they are shaping the future , we must empower, and guide these leaders of tomorrow." As fans of Morgan Heritage eagerly await the album, Mojo reasures their fans that the album isn't indicative of the band's separation but rather a branch of the family's journey "The greatest thing for me is to not only have the backing of

my brothers, but to have Morgan heritage present me as a solo artist to the world. This is going to give fans a deeper look into me as an artist and my rasta rock persona. We also want to reassure our fans and music lovers that it isn't us doing solo projects and taking a break from the group, but us giving Morgan Heritage a different face and voice to identify the group by as we continue this journey with our fans" related the Rasta Rock star. vitality and diversity of independent cinema by partnering with the MIBFF," said Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor. "Film gives us a compelling and authentic portrait of a people. The MIBFF is a marvelous opportunity to look beyond borders and experience other cultures from around the world." "This major partnership with Quebecor places the MIBFF on a firm footing and also strengthens its national positioning," said Fabienne Colas, founding President of the Montreal International Black Film Festival. "For 14 years, the MIBFF has provided a showcase and given voice to thousands of artists who would otherwise have gone unseen and unheard, while bringing in celebrities from the four corners of the earth."

Quebecor Diversity on screen scholarship The Quebecor Diversity on screen scholarship will be awarded to a young member of the black community who wants to pursue audiovisual studies. Its objective is to help train the next generation of film and television professionals while promoting greater diversity both on the screen and behind the camera. "This scholarship, to be awarded by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, will help improve access and support cultural sharing," said Ms. Colas. It aims to offer the public the most spectacular productions in black cinema and debate the great cultural, social, and socio-economic issues facing society. The MIBFF goal is to promote the development of the independent film industry and showcase more films depicting black realities around the world. The Festival seeks to prioritize local and international films that do not necessarily come under the spotlight, a new cinema that moves its audience and raises awareness—and a few eyebrows. In so doing, the MIBFF addresses issues and showcases art that makes you think and smile, provokes, bewilders, and shocks you—a new, fresh look at black cinema from all four corners of the globe! www.montrealblackfilm.com SOURCE Quebecor

We Want EQUALITY - How the Fight for Equality Gave Way to Preference, Available From Amazon, September 11, 2018 CHICAGO, /PRNewswire/ -EQUALITY is a powerful word and achieving it is a lofty goal. The Left claim to fight for equality; but their actions don't support this claim. Love delves into issues of inequality, exploring how they impact our culture while separating fact from fiction. We Want EQUALITY starts with a much needed history lesson, discussing past horrors and showing why true equality can never be achieved. Armed with logic, Love explains why our problem is culture not inequality. He demonstrates how the decline of traditional values led to pervasive nihilism and feelings of entitlement. Moving on, he deftly addresses the four primary areas that encapsulate perceived inequality (Race, Income, Gender and Religion); ending with why he tackled this subject and how we can save the culture. He discusses the strong and growing role the media, entertainment, big business and politicians play in the diminution of traditional values – Love then sites numerous examples of how this cultural manipulation by

the Left is hurting the country. Finally, with meticulous detail, he explains how we can bring the country back from the brink. This, includes step-by-step instructions on how to get involved, debate the Left and push back when attacked. About the Author: C.
