Street in Namibian Capital Renamed in Honour of National Hero Marcus Garvey

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Namibia for naming a street in the capital, Windhoek, in honour of Jamaica’s first national hero, the Rt. Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The street renaming ceremony took place this afternoon (July 23) during Prime Minister Holness’ official working visit to Namibia.

“Naming a street in this capital city of Windhoek in honour of Marcus Garvey represents a demonstration of posterity of the value of the contribution of one who has played a lead role in countering negative appellations forced on black people in Africa and the Diaspora,” said Prime Minister Holness. The Prime Minister noted that the historic renaming of the

street is a symbol of pride and honour.

for ongoing and future collaboration.

“We in Jamaica are extremely proud yet deeply humbled that you have chosen to honour one of our own in this tangible way. This great gesture will undoubtably create curiosity among future generations, as they seek answers to the question, who was Marcus Garvey,” said the Prime Minister.

The Rt. Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jamaica’s first national hero was a celebrated Pan Africanist, philosopher and leading exponent of black pride and consciousness. He was a self-declared citizen of a global Africa.

He said Jamaica continues to strengthening ties with its brothers and sisters on the African continent. “It is a symbol of our geo cultural and spiritual unification. Further it is important for those of us African peoples dispersed far afield in places like the Caribbean and the Americas to have the opportunity to join in a gesture that re-establishes the original bonds of family and shared destinies. It is a truly good feeling that augurs well

Prime Minister Holness said he is encouraged by the impact of the naming of the street in honour of Mr. Garvey on the youth. He expressed the hope that it will cause stories of strength of conviction to be told again and again. The Prime Minister also highlighted that it was fitting that the renaming was being done during the celebration of the Nelson Mandela centenary. source: www.jis.gov.jm Photo: OPM Photo

Medicanja Limited Launches Cannabis-Based Nutraceutical Products

Medicanja Limited today (July 26) launched its full suite of 12 cannabis-based nutraceutical products during a ceremony at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort and Spa on Lady Musgrave Road, St. Andrew The products, which have been approved by the Ministry of Health, include CanjaRub, CanjaCol, Relevium Cream, Relevium Spray, Somnican (One Drop) Orals, Tivasat Oromuccosol Spray, I-Cann, CBD Oil Sublingual Drops and Daily Single-dose Syringe, Epilec Pro, Cannrepel Anti-Itch Mosquito Repellent Spray, and Sclorican.

In his remarks, Health Minister, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, said the development of the products demonstrated Medicanja’s commitment and “the advancement of an industry that, even though it has been around for a very long while, still has to be considered [as being] in its relatively infant stage”. “From a public health perspective, we are with you and we are with those who are committed to taking this particular approach. We want to be as accommodating as possible, because we do have a responsibility also, in public health, to advance solutions to the public health concerns of our people,” he stated. The Health Minister noted that the

public health sector acknowledges the benefits of medicinal marijuana, adding that “we have seen enough to be convinced that there is significant potential”. For his part, Executive Chairman, Medicanja Limited, Dr. Henry Lowe, noted that his company was confident in the safety of its products, “with the expectation (that) they will be approved by the healthcare authorities, and by other Ministries of Health, regionally and globally”. “The time has come for us to use the achievement of Medicanja to bring a new type of regional collaboration, based on enlightened technical cooperation and trade through the use of our products and services in the CARICOM region,” he stated. Dr. Lowe further argued that “if we truly believe in regional cooperation, and wish to work together with each other on the matter of medicinal cannabis, then as I stated before the time is now”. He pointed out that Medicanja’s achievements over the last four

and a half years have been “nothing less than phenomenal”, adding that the basic scientific research and development, clinical research studies, formulation and product development have been achieved in a relatively short time, while meeting the required quality standards. “The launch of these 12 products today is a landmark to the rest of the region and world, where we have demonstrated that little Jamaica can use science and technology and innovation to create a variety of healthcare products,” Dr. Lowe stated. Medicanja Limited was established in December 2013 by Dr. Lowe to chart the course for the development of a medical marijuana industry in Jamaica. Cannabis, known locally as ganja, has long been regarded as a plant with outstanding medicinal properties. source: www.jis.gov.jm Photo: Michael Sloley Advertisment

Perspective: Professional Misconduct

Any allegation of professional misconduct should not be treated lightly. These allegations should not be made lightly and should not be confused with genuine errors on the part of professionals in the case of who prosecuted the very complex case involving internationally acclaimed recording artiste Vybz Kartel's criminal charges which have been brought against him and his co

accused. Let us not be confused, these are serious charges indeed. Do bear in mind that the body of the dead victim has so far not been found. Right To Life Anyone who respects the "right to life" cannot in all seriousness dismiss these charges or the information that led to allegations which

form the basis for these charges in the first place. A human being who has a right to live has been denied this right. Someone was murdered in cold blood. This you will no doubt agree is not acceptable. Let such an activity be left to the Supreme Maker, whether God or whomever you regard as your God. We normal human beings here on earth do not have the right to give life or take same. None of us are so qualified ... whether we are Pope, Bishop, or Prophet/ Prophetess. To take a life is not our role. So we set up in all civilized societies a judicial system with a view to ensuring that justice is served and anyone so accused and tried will be entitled to a fair trial and a just punishment.

This system albeit imperfect, has so far served us well. From the investigator to the trial Judge who presides in a case are supposed to be well trained so as to maintain the highest level of integrity of the system and to ensure that allegations are evidence-based. Allegations, must be proven. In the case of criminal charges like murder, the threshold of proof is higher ie " beyond doubt" not a gut feeling or a hunch, not by race, male or female, nor religion or belief... all are to be treated equal under the law. We even go as far a saying in criminal cases as stated above "Beyond the shadow of a doubt." The burden of proof rests with the prosecutor (police, DPP etc.).

Justice System

Vybz's Appeal

So when an accusation of judicial misconduct, as in the Vybz Kartel appeal case is made, we must treat the matter seriously. Of course such must also be proven. We must be fair to all parties ... both the complainant and the accused. We await a response to these allegations of judicial misconduct from the DPP's office. In my perspective such allegations are serious and we hope a prompt response will be forthcoming from the DPP's office, or from she herself. She is never shy to face the media. What is your perspective? Hopeton O'Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.

Perspective: Vybz Kartel Reportedly Admitted To Murder In Text Messages The defense is claiming that Kartel's cell phone was tampered with to let him look bad and hence secure his conviction. Contamination Of Evidence

Vybz Kartel Murder Appeal Sections of the media have been reporting that in the appeal case before the Appeals Tribunal is that there is a damning revelation that Kartel

allegedly admitted to murdering Lizard in a text message. Is this true?

We long reported that the cell phone involved was in fact tampered with while in police custody. Calls were said made from the phone. This is unacceptable but a far cry from a text sent admitting to murder. (See attached report).

Murder

Verdict

If this report is accurate then the defense has Mount Everest climb to overcome.

We anxiously await the verdict of the Appeals Court. They

have a not so easy task ahead of them. Is Kartel a murderer? Or is he framed?

twists and turns in the Kartel matter. If the average person is confused we do understand.

Perspective

Murder

These are serious charges and this case cannot be viewed lightly. On the other hand convictions must be evidenced-based. The justice system must have integrity and be fair to the pauper or the wealthy or famous. The black, the white or all races or skin shades ... whether gay or straight, male or female.

We do not grudge the Appeals Panel. They have a very difficult task. Public pressure alone. Enough said. In the end let us not forget that a life has been illegally taken. Murder In paradise happened. It is by whom that is the real issue.

In my perspective there are too many

Editorial Perspective: Is the monachy still relevant today.?

The recent visit of President Trump to the UK and the mixed reaction to his visit, begs the question: Is the monachy still relevant today.? Marriage The recent marriage in 2018 of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle has given the monachy renewed visibility. This was a great media event and it went very well. Qudos to all concerned for a job well done. Harry and his afro-american bride now his wife Meghan, now a Dutchess did make a great spectacle. Trump's Visit Many felt Trump should not have been invited to the former motherland. That is now water under

the bridge. Was it Trump's moral standing that was the real obstacle? We may never know. Trump advised them to be a tough bargainer with the European Union in their Brexit divorce negotiations. Was that an appropriate intervention? Christopher Martin, recording artist states: There are tines when leaving people business alone is the best thing to do. Is it always the best road to take.? You be the judge. Christopher Martin advises us to "Leave people business alone" in his very popular song which is a hit in Jamaica. I think the actual title/ or a line is "Chatty, chatty... Mouth a massie, leave people business alone" check Youtube for the full lines. Is this not interference in Britian's internal affairs? Trump should have known better. Will the brits listen to the American. He has had so many

scandals attached to his name it is surprising that the weight of same has not dtagged him down a hole like a drain. Who would considet Trump credible enough to listen to his advice? Certainly not the brits, from my perspective. Canada The monachy seems very much alive. Canada still hold on to same and keep the Queen as head of state. Amercans have their own agenda, as his their right. They fought a bloody battle to leave the Monachy in the 1770s. Got independence in 1776. Good for them. They care little about the Monachy. So just stay out of their business. Should Trump not do so? What is your feedback? Let us hear from you. Hopeton O'Connor-Dennie is a keen observer of international events and personalities. Perspective: Is Jamaica's Sovereignty Under Threat By Foreign Government?

The good aged saying that the more things change, they seem to remain the same appears to be true to the letter. Amazing, indeed!. Events at Petrojam, a jointventure entity with the Venezuelans and Jamaica is under the microscope and now "demoted/discarded" energy minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley is in the centre of both Caricel (cellphone technology) and Petrojam (energy sector) mess. Technology and Energy fell under Minister Wheatley. There has been a seperation from the energy Ministry of Dr. Andrew Wheatley since the Petrojam

mess. Have messy situations found embracing or finding Dr. Wheatley fertile ground or attractive? You be the judge, will you? Our job is to state the facts without fear or favour. Let the chips fall where they may. Caricel We did look at the vexed issue of Caricel, trading as Sibiote Investments befote and our sovereignty. Since our post there has been a significant new development in this rather messy saga. Caricel's Operating Liscence was ordered

revoked by Technology Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley et al. The same Minister who had his Energy portfolio taken from him by PM Holness. PM Holness was forced to act as a result of the Petrojam debacle and subsequent revelations of alleged mismanagemet at this State oil entity. "The Petrojam Oil Spill". Is how we describe same. PM Holness in his wisdom likely acted to save face and to ensure that the matter does not spiral out of control. Did the PM take too long to act? You be the jurors. The verdict is yours to make. Watergate Scandal The spy scandal or the break in by the President Nixon/party admininistration led to Nixon of the USA resigning in disgrace. We cannot under-estimate the power of the media. This would be unthinkable twenty five years prior to same. In Russia or some other less vigilant democracies a break in would likely be a storm in a tea cup. Not an event to bring down the most

powerful man in the free world ...the United States President. Dudus Extradition PM Bruce Golding resigned due to his government's handling of the Dudus Affair. Who would have thought this was possible when the issue first broke? It happened and did so rather quickly. Such is public life which demands transparency and accountability. PM and Petrojam PM has to be careful that the gains made by him and his party, the JLP and his government are not eroded by small but significant issues which are magnified by an alert social media. Issues bring down governments as they can take on a life of their own. Enough said! We hope that the petrojam issue is resolved quickly. Holness must have had good reason to somehow demote Wheatley by relieving him of the energy portfolio. Did Holness act fairly

in light of a release from his Director of Communications/ OPM etc. That the "allegations are unfounded/not accurate" my words. Comments close to my words. We will wait and see. We hope Wheatley was treated fairly. All including Dr. Wheatley deserve nothing less than a fair deal. Sound justice must be handed down to all. Holness has a razor thin majority in Parliament ... he cannot be careless or else he and his government could fall. Even before the Fall season. It is as serious and delicate an issue as that. This is my perspective. What is yours.? The opposition PNP has called for Wheatley's dismissal. This appears not likely to happen. Is PM Holness and Dr. Wheatley lumped together, a bad dose of Andrews Salts? Their Christian names are both Andrew. See you later. By 2013, her debut album Every Opposite also generated some of the industry's most notable accolades, including landing on the Polaris Music Prize's Short List; voted as one of the Top 10 albums released in Canada based on pure artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label.

When we thought of the remix to propel the song into the North American market we decided that he was perfect for it especially since he lives the lifestyle that the song talks about," Fambo

"We pulled out all the stops to make the video 'flairy' for sure, its a real fun flossing song so the video had to depict that lifestyle," Fambo added The 'How we Living' remix is very special to Fambo as it represents the first single that will make it on his yet to be titled third album. His first album 'Kung Fu' was released predominantly in Japan and his second album entitled Evolve: The Uprise was released in 2016 and scaled the Billboard Reggae Album Charts. The new album is set for release later this year and will also feature collaborations with Kranium and Tory Lanez. It is executively produced by Future Fambo's new management label White Gad Records. Reggae Sumfest Has Spoken. I-Octane Conquers 2018 Sumfest with Overall Best Performance, Receives Award

Kingston, Jamaica (MPR Consulting) - It was long anticipated by reggae and dancehall fans to witness the return of international recording artist I-Octane to Jamaica's premiere and largest concert festival Reggae Sumfest. Noticeably absent to last year's staging, I-Octane was himself busy putting the finishes touches on his third full length album

"Love & Life". A fan favorite, the prolific artist made up for lost time by delivering classic hits such as "Mama You Alone" and "Lose A Friend" , to music from his top charting billboard "Love & Life" album like "Weh Di Fire Gone" and "Unfair Games" featuring Yanique Di Curvy Diva who to the delight of patrons made an appearance on the coveted stage. I-Octane's relationship with his fans are meaningful and special to the artist who is well known to leave the safety of the stage to make his way into the core of the crowd for a more intimate delivery. Through Reggae Sumfest live stream, social media overwhelming positive feedback was captured. "Him shell dung d place! hot ras

- @cooliecool." "Iconic!!!!!! - @ prince_rikardo_elite" "Congratulations loved the performance - @ hisqueen.angel", "@realioctane u deallllllll with it WELLLLLL me a tell u - @kimmieluvsu", "Energy him a feel and a connection wid di fans - @king_anthonythefirst". Billboard's renowned Pat Meschino chimed in on Otane's performance “I was fortunate to be at Reggae Sumfest 2010 when I-Octane made the transition from opening act to headliner status. In his prime-time position that night he tore down the stage with a ferocious delivery of reality lyrics and ever since, he’s been a powerful force in dancehall. I’ve seen I-Octane at every Sumfest since: the years he’s closed the show when others said he couldn’t do it, he not only proved them wrong, he set the stage ablaze! After being benched for inexplicable reasons in 2017, this year’s performance was on another level. Leaping from the stage to deliver the majority of

his set standing on a barrel in the middle of an audience exceeding 10,000 patrons, Octane put down furious, adrenaline pumping renditions of his hits. Octane recalled his history in the business on “One Chance”, shared the barrel platform with a peanut vendor in a tribute to the strugglers, “My Story”, and mourned the rising crime in Sumfest’s home, Montego Bay with “Lose A Friend” in what may be his finest performance ever and certainly among the very best of Sumfest 2018.” Overwhelmed and humbled by the reception, I-Octane stated “Last year dem bench and me se me nah go work Sumfest again but me and Joe (Joe Bogdanovich) and Skatta (Cordel Burrell) work it out and we decide fi come back,”. It is a great honor to be getting this award because I have been putting in the work over the years,” explained the prolific hitmaker. “This means at lot to me. Advertisment

Film Frances-Anne Solomon's Hero - Inspired By The Extraordinary Life & Times Of Mr. Ulric Cross

13

Those supporting~the~development of the film include Presenting Sponsor, Republic Bank, in association with Telefilm Canada, CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution and Imagine Media International.

Hero - Inspired By The Extraordinary Life & Times Of Mr. Ulric Cross, is the story of a young man from Trinidad whose life is woven into the tapestry of history. His long life (1917 - 2013) spanned key events of the 20th Century and included the independence struggles of Africa and the Caribbean. He was a war hero, broadcaster, lawyer, judge and diplomat. "The story interweaves “reality” media (archive, interviews) with “artificial” media (dramatic

re-creation). These artistic tools are vital to reclaim and retell Caribbean stories. Since “real” footage does not exist, we must re-imagine the past. These appropriations of form are essential where conventional documentation is lacking. We must seek, through the new technology, to reclaim our authentic histories by any means necessary," said Director/Producer Frances-Anne Solomon. "Ultimately, the story is about us, about who we are as Caribbean people and as citizens of the world."

The international cast includes top screen stars from the Caribbean, Great Britain, Ghana and Canada including Trinidad's Nickolai Salcedo in the lead role of Ulric Cross, Peter Williams (Stargate SG1), Joseph Marcell (Fresh Prince of Belair) and Ghana's John Dumelo. The 100-minute feature film was filmed over three years on location in Ghana, Great Britain and Canada, as well as in Trinidad & Tobago.

HERO FILM's four Board directors have invested their time and expertise to ensure the project's successful completion. This project began with (the late) Desmond Allum's wish to showcase the life of his friend, Trinidad and Tobago national Ulric Cross, and his contribution to a significant global revolution -- the Pan African Movement. All profits from the film will go to the Cotton Tree Foundation, the NGO founded several years ago by Desmond Allum and Ulric Cross to meet the needs of disadvantaged youth in St Ann's and Belmont, Trinidad & Tobago. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 - The Royal Cinema 608 College Street, Toronto, Canada M6G 1B4 5:30pm - Opening Reception and 8:00pm - Film Presentation
