The Caribbean Jamaican Minister of Tourism Visits New York to Discuss Tourism Growth Plans

Lotto Scam Crackdown: 19 seized, 12 Freed & 7 to be Extradited … J$2 million … were over 1000 murders. Montego Bay alone saw some 200 murders last year 2015.

The World The late mayor was a friend of all and will be remember to have torn down the colour divide

In March this year there is already been a 9 percent increase in murders since January 1, 2016.

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett (right) is currently in New York attending a series of meetings with strategic tourism partners. His first stop was at the corporate headquarters of JetBlue, where he met with senior executives John Checketts, Director Route Planning (left) and Jaclyn Costantino, Analyst Consumer Promotions (3rd left) to discuss plans to drive new markets and forge new partnerships to grow Jamaica’s tourism product. The Minister was accompanied by Paul Pennicook, Director of Tourism (2nd right), Donnie Dawson, Deputy Director of Tourism (3rd right) and Francine Carter Henry, Jamaica Tourist Board’s Tour Operator & Airlines Manager. Commentary The government is going for growth and improved visitor arrivals can make the difference. There is need for hard currency that tourism bearings. Cuba now opened is more competition as an additional player to contend with. Jamaica has language which is spoken by many including our biggest markets USA and Canada.

As the Jamaican murder rate continues to be high the police are reporting that seven will be extradited to the USA to face charges and a car is also said to have been seized in simultaneous island wide raids last weekend. The USA is believed to have given tactical and intelligence support. There was a donation of some 9 patrol boats from the USA … in addition to those seized by marine police. The lotto scam is believed responsible for the 23 percent increase in murders over 2014. In 2015 there

Lotto Scam mainly target elderly or retired Americans by calling them and advise them that they have won cash and need to send fees to get this fortune. Scammers have targeted their rivals locally and have been murderous in their conduct. This has shot up the homicide rate in Jamaica. There are too many illegal guns being smuggled into Jamaica at our sea ports. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.

Dr. Clover Jarrett, Educator, Guidance Councillor ... Laid To Rest ... Eulogized as Dignified ... Caring ... People Person ... Achiever

It is with deep sadness to have learnt of the passing of Former Mayor of Toronto, Ontario, Mayor Rob Ford. The late mayor was a friend of all and will be remember to have torn down the colour divide and brought a renewed sense of humanity to public life in not only the GTA but the Canadian populace in general. As a minority who has faced upfront the indignity of racism, Rob Ford was a liberator of the marginalized. Everyone who was around Rob Ford felt his unbridled warmth and rich outpouring of genuine love and acceptance. He tore down barriers hence his widespread popularity. It was unfortunate that certain sections of the media saw no good in Ford and would go the extra mile to belittle and undermine his good intentions. Was this a case of power corrupts and absolute power corrupting absolutely? Ford for all his sins deserved to have been better treated. As Jesus said of the woman caught in adultery who would have normally been stoned to death … “He who is without sin let them cast the first stone.” May his soul rest in peace and perpetual shine on him.

Liberia closes part of border with Guinea after Ebola cases

Earthquake strikes near Antigua but causes no damage

MONROVIA, Liberia _ Authorities have closed a portion of Liberia’s northern border with Guinea and plan to expand the cordon amid a resurgence of Ebola.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico _ The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.0 earthquake has hit parts of the eastern Caribbean, where local officials are reporting shaking but no damage. The quake at 7:26 a.m. (1126 GMT) Saturday March 19th was centred under the sea 96 miles (155 kilometres) northeast of St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda. The Caribbean Disaster Management Agency says residents in Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, the Virgin Islands and Saint Lucia felt the quake, but saw no damage. The Associated Press

Liberian Information Minister Eugene Nagbe confirmed that the closure is in effect in Lofa County, and officials intend to shut down the rest of the border with Guinea. Guinea had been on track to be free of Ebola transmission this month but then two new cases emerged. The new outbreak has prompted fear in Liberia, which has lost more than 4,000 people to the deadly virus and already has been declared Ebola-free twice only to find more cases. Critics warn the border between the two West African countries is porous and people will continue to enter Liberia in forested areas because of cross-border business

MP, Peter Bunting Offers Himself As Leader Of The PNP Commentary Further to the motion to unseat Paul Burke as General Secretary, there is even more moves to shake up the leadership of the PNP going forward. Peter Bunting has publicly stated his position to offer himself for the Presidency of the PNP.

As the crisis deepens in the PNP there has been a potential challenge to the leadership of Portia for the top spot in the PNP. Portia said she is going no where. “Is it because of my gender? … I am fitter than many younger persons than me” as she fights back at a press briefing called by the PNP. “Others have lost elections and have not been asked to step aside” she asserted. Portia is 70 and has been at the helm of the PNP for 10 years. (from 2006). Portia is in representational politics for over forty years. She started as a Parish Councillor at the Local Government level. Speaking on radio Bunting confirmed his ambition to challenge Portia as party leader. He gave little details but said “I would prefer for her (Portia) to leave on her own timetable”. Bunting said he and Portia enjoyed a good “personal relationship.”

Bunting’s move, if successful, would replace Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller as party President. She is 70 and led a one term government that lost on February 25, 2016 to the JLP’s led Andrew Michael Holness who is now Prime Minister. Backlash Bunting is fearing any possible backlash if it were perceived by Portia loyalists that she is being pushed aside for a younger person. It should be noted that Portia still enjoys strong support within the ranks of the PNP especially at the grassroots level. Many voters can readily identify with Portia who came from relative obscurity to the top job as Prime Minister. Portia herself never fails to draw the “humble background” card. Chang, a public commentator has lauded Bunting’s move as “positive” for the PNP. Since the loss to the JLP, the PNP

Diaspora Corner

appears to be in turmoil and a Review Committee chaired by Julian Robinson, deputy General Secretary has been set up to examine the reasons for the defeat. It has been rumoured for some time that Bunting who is 55 was eying the top leadership job in the PNP. Will Dr. Peter Phillips throw his hat in the ring? Bunting was an investment banker and businessman, prior to entering politics. He is the MP for Central Manchester and was former General Secretary of the PNP. The two term Central Manchester MP was a Cabinet member and was appointed National Security Minister in the Portia Simpson Miller Cabinet/ administration. Stay tuned to Vision for the latest in this unfolding drama. We hope it will not get nasty. We have to be weary of those with the Christian name “Peter” … they have deceived and betrayed. Haven’t they? The PNP today is as strange and unpredictable as Portia Simpson Miller’s thinking, eh! Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.

JLP Government Wants Diaspora to vote in Jamaican elections. Speaking at the sixth diaspora Conference held in Jamaica, then Opposition Leader Holness renewed a call for voting rights to be extended to the diaspora. The newly appointed Foreign Minister Senator K. Johnson-Smith has asked foreign representatives to explore this matter and report to her on their findings. She notes that Ireland, and other countries do allow for this to happen.

Also "We need your feedback if we are going to meet your needs" The first female Foreign Minister said in her appeal for partnership. She further made an appeal to: "Liaison Officers, I call on you to assist to ensure donations of say Medical Supplies are smoothly processed. There have been concerns in the past. Dual Citizenship is also on my (Foreign Minister's) mind" Minister Johnson-Smith is a lawyer by profession whose father is Ambassador Anthony Johnson who has served with distinction in the USA and Britain representing Jamaica. Remittances from the diaspora community is of great value to the Jamaican economy and society in general. We greatly value our partnership. PNP Turn On Each Other ... As Lisa Hanna Moves 'No Confidence Motion' Against Paul Burke, General Secretary The motion having been seconded is now legally before the NEC. Reports are that Council has a month to look at the motion before debate and ratification or rejection. The motion is calling for Burke's immediate removal. Hanna refused to speak to the assembled media claiming that she does not discuss "party matters publicly".

Still reeling from the shock loss to the JLP ... former beauty queen MP Lisa Hanna has turned her fury against Paul Burke, PNP's General Secretary ... blaming him for the loss. She (Hanna) did not publicly take responsibility for the PNP's loss ... Did she? The most powerful decision making body outside their Annual General Conference, ... met for the first time since the February 25, 2016 General Election loss to the JLP. The National Executive Council (NEC). held what it was reported as a "tense" meeting. The meeting accepted a motion of "no confidence" brought by Region 1 chairperson MP Lisa Hanna.

In the meantime embattled Gen. Sec. seems to be in denial ... claiming that he is not "embattled." Paul Burke also said " Lisa Hanna has been a good Youth Minister, but questioned her role in the defeat to the JLP. "Why she did not bring out the youth vote? One commentator said: "There is no love lost between Hanna and Burke. Why is this so? Is this a smoke screen? It is public knowledge that the Office Of The Contractor General (OCG) has been investigating allegations of possible mismanagement of funds in Lisa's constituency. We also know that Paul Burke visited her area to try to mediate a dispute with Hanna's councillors and herself.

Palace Coup We also know that Lydia Richards, Councillor of the Bensonton Division was moving to challenge Hanna for the right to represent the constituency held by MP Lisa Hanna. There was tension and a nasty public row. We daily saw playing out before us for example: The removal of the chair of Prickley Pole Primary School after a child died under a cloud of accusations of a political nature. Independent Investigation Commentary A subsequent Investigation by CDA exonerated School board chair of any negligence or wrong doing. There was bad blood and Comrades were washing their dirty linen very publicly. This motion appears to be a smoke screen intended to disguise the real picture. What a tangled web ...? The OCG, is an independent body that investigates allegations of corruption ... it does not pay courtesy calls on suspects ... they are serious people. Criminal proceedings/ prosecution can flow from adverse findings. Will Hanna be forced to defend herself in a court of law? Why the NC Motion At This Time? In attempting to answer this ques-

tion it should be noted that Paul Burke had indicated (on February 29, 2016 which is prior to Hanna's no confidence motion that was officially presented to the NEC) that come Annual Conference ... September 2016, it is his publicly expressed intention to demit office as Gen. Sec. This was on the record before last weekend. Hanna's 5 Point Reasons ... The internationally acclaimed beauty queen said in her letter allegedly sent by her to the media and read publicly that : (not a verbatim account) 1) The Gen. Sec should give a positive brand image of party ... 2) There should be efficiency 3) Seek to the motivation of staff and the Secretariat 4) Up hold discipline 5) Win elections Paul Burke responded by saying in an interview monitored by Vision inter alia. "Why did we not get the youth vote? ... Hanna was the Youth Minister. Burke also chided his Comrade colleagues for "not disclosing" and sharing campaign funds for the ben-

efit of all. He further asserted that "others contributed to the PNP being in Opposition today." Burke took full responsibility for his role. It is alleged that PNP Elder K.D. Knight had some harsh words for Burke. Knight commended the Gen. Sec. of serving the PNP well but was accusing Burke of being promoted out of his "competence." We await the outcome of this "mud slinging" contest in the PNP ... as usual you my valued readers be my guest as the verdict is always yours. There is still trouble in Gully Bop's life ... new Beau fuming from jealousy over him. Amari is thinking of asking him to hop off. She accuses him of being a womanizer and said she fell for him as she was sorry for him as Chin had allegedly cheated on him. "He has a girl who is said to be pregnant for him".Amari asserted. "Gully Bop has multiple partners and a baby is on the way ... He is cheating on me" declared Amari. As a parting shot, Bop's new girlfriend said "Bop is greedy, in fact he "eats

Speaking on D' Wrap, a popular entertainment show aired on CVM TV, Bop's new found Amari says Gully Bop is cheating on her. "I don't know what women see in Bop to be running after him" declared a rather distressed sounding Amari. " I flew to Jamaica to see Bop ... he is broke. ...the only money he has is what I send him" she declared. "I just did a collaboration with Bop ... "A distraught looking Amari who is a recording artiste herself, readily disclosed. It was a no holds barred interview in which she poured out her heart ... holding back very little, it

Gully Bop had a very public and nasty split up with Chin. It is alleged that Chin had used a padlock to damage his face ... Bop publicly disclosed this on TV. In fact he was still very much bandaged as he related his ordeal. He also accused Chin of having a man hiding in his house and wearing his clothes. Jamaican Culture and Entertainment Minister Calls for the Preservation of Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake’s Legacy she said. The Minister added that as a country, Jamaicans cannot forget or ignore the contributions of the Blake brothers to the growth and development of its entertainment industry. Recalling memories shared with the musical icon, Minister Grange described Winston Blake as a man of “great wisdom and kindness”.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Culture and Entertainment Minister, the Honourable Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, today, April 2, 2016 paid tribute to Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake and urged family members and friends to preserve his legacy and memory. Speaking at the Memorial held at Hope Gardens in Kingston, the Minister said, “I want to say thanks to Winston for the music, the passion and the joy that he brought us.”

Minister Grange also used the opportunity to thank the family for allowing everyone present to be a part of the life and story of such an incredible man, a stalwart in the music business. She further highlighted the influence that Blake and Merritone had on the creative and musical industries, both locally and internationally. “The many roles Winston and Merritone have played in the production and popularization of Jamaican music is deserving of our sincerest gratitude as a nation,”

The Minister also reminded those in attendance that Blake was an individual who not only created memories but also preserved them. She made an appeal to family members, friends and the music fraternity to preserve the legacy and memory of the man who has made such tremendous contribution to Jamaica’s musical development. “Winston was an avid collector of memorabilia. He saved almost everything as his life was a series of magical moments filled with interesting and beautiful people. We need to protect his legacy,”

Minister Grange said. She also expressed the willingness to meet with Monte and the rest of the family in an effort to determine how best the valuable treasure left behind can be utilised. “We must respect the foundation that he and the other Blake Brothers have already built and merge our efforts to ensure that their pioneering work is not in vain. I hope that we can formulate a lasting tribute to the family, for having built a small, rural sound system from St. Thomas into one of the most important influences on our music over the past six decades,” she added. Winston Blake was the chief Architect of the Merritone legacy, which includes being the first Jamaican Sound system to venture overseas, entertaining Jamaicans in the Diaspora and becoming an unofficial ambassador for local music.

Miss Kitty & Yanique Barrett Suspended From Magnum Kings & Queens After On Air Argument The conduct of the so called fluffy diva cannot be ignored as a miss nobody misbehaving and so no big thing. Miss kitty has received accolades as a responsible role model. She runs a very popular show, has an enviable brand. Got youth view award and has a popular school life progamme that visits tradition and non tradition high schools. Is Miss Kitty a wholesome role model to be influencing young minds? As a responsibke media we called the Miss Kitty Management team to get a response to a public dispute between Miss Kitty and Yanique Barrett that happened on live television.

Even as we pressed for an answer ... was the response from the very polite Miss Kitty aide who was very professional although subjected to intense pressure by the undersigned.

Ms. T. Williams, Executive Producer, for Miss Kitty Live, a very popular evening music show responded to Vision. "We will issue a statement in time" ... asked if she will issue an apology ... she would not respond either way ... the executive producer was deafenly silent. They are obviously hunkering down. "I really don't want to talk about it".

This story is going nowhere in a hurry based on "talk in the streets". I advised. "Others have called and we have taken the same position." Miss Williams concluded. Commentary

Miss Kitty, Fluffy Diva aka Kadene Hylton has been under tremendous pressure since her apparent unprovoked outburst on live Television as a judge, on the Magnum Kings and Queens Show with host Yanique Barrett. This is supposed to be a family-friendly show beamed to possibly a million viewers. It is not known what prompted the outburst and if it was a festering boil which just got ripe and burst. It was a bust out that sent ripples which may have far reaching implications for all.

It is also not clear what impact this very public not so pleasant display will have on her future on the show. Will the two divas want to continue to work together? Will the management of the Magnum Show keep either employees? Is Miss Kitty, who is believed to be the aggressor should now be seen as damaged goods? How much damage has been done to the Kitty brand/ image? On the other hand Miss Kitty has considerable support in many areas of Jamaican life. She is very poplar so her supporters my excuse her and move on ... for her sake we hope they look the other way. The whole episode is so bizarre. This is a period of Lent ... we need to forgive and move on ... a teachable moment for us all. We hope justice will be tempered with mercy. The West Indies created history when they won two T20 titles the same day.

Minister of Culture, Gender Affairs, Entertainment & Sport Hon. Olivia Grange describes the West Indies men’s team as “true and worthy champions” after they became the first team to win the ICC T20 World Cup twice. The Caribbean men, today, edged a pulsating four-wicket win over England in the grand showdown at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India with Carlos Brathwaite smashing four mighty sixes in the final over with two balls remaining. “Like every West Indian I was nervous too with 19 runs required from the final over. But Carlos Brathwaite showed that he has a big, big heart. He believes in himself and his calmness under such immense pressure is indicative of his quality and sheer class. Marlon Samuels was outstanding as well, it was his innings that was pivotal in making this victory possible. But overall this team has proven throughout the tournament that

they are true and worthy champions and it’s a victory most deserving for the entire region and all West Indian around the world,” said a beaming Grange. “We must not overlook the contribution of the West Indies Cricket Board, the coaching and management staff; the sponsors and ardent fans they have all played their part in this momentous occasion for West Indies cricket which undoubtedly remains an emblem of regional integration, pride and joy.” She added “It is really an historic occasion and I’m really happy that I’m the Minister at this time. We won the Under-19 world time and in less than 24 hours have added the men and women ICC T20 World titles.” Commentary The West Indies created history today when they won two T20 titles the same day. The West Indies women Captained by Stefanie Taylor, a Jamaican faced the Australians

whom they have never beaten. Their opponents batted first and posted a total of 149 runs to win. The West Indian girls came through and won by four wickets. West Indies Men Later in the day the West Indies men beat England by eight wickets by scoring 24 runs off the last four balls. Set a target of 155 to win and 20 Overs to make the required runs to win, the West Indians chased the highest total ever chased by them to win a T20 game. World Record Achievement West Indies Holds Three World Cricket Titles T20 & 50 Overs … simultaneously … The West Indies has had its ups and downs in recent times. Gone are the days when we were test cricket series winners. Today is a big day for our 6 million people across the Caribbe-

an who make up the West Indies team. Our under 19 team became world Champions at the 50 Overs format of the game for the first time recently. This was quite an accolade. Another Record The West Indians are the only team to win the T20 title twice. We first won it in 2012 and today Sunday April 3, 2016. Both matches were held in Kolkata, India. Controversy Marlon Samuels dedicated his cup of leading scorer for his chief critic Shane Warne. Darren Sammy, Captain, was scaving in his criticism of the West Indies Board. Minister Grange and Fantasia visit Women’s Centre years has put on a free public concert and has encouraged patrons to bring a small food item which in turn is on donated to a chosen charity. This concert is always well supported by young, not so young and has mass appeal. This year as usual, an internationally acclaimed recording artiste is flown in. Fantasia will be that artiste as headliner in 2016 and will be supported by local acts. Dubbed ‘Blues on the Green’ the acts are usually of a very high standard. It is an open air event so the weather has to cooperate.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport (CGES), the Honourable Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, visited the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation in Kingston with International Recording Artiste, Fantasia, ahead of her performance at the annual ‘Blues on the Green’ Charity Concert which was held this at Emancipation Park.

She told the girls that their children may “grow to become the next Prime Minister or one of the greatest personalities in Jamaica”.

During her tour of the facility the Minister used the opportunity to offer words of encouragement to teen moms. “Treat your experience as a learning one, hold your head high and strive to mature into your best selves. Use Fantasia as an inspiration.” Said Minister Grange.

The Ministry has arranged transportation for the girls to attend the concert this evening.

Fantasia used the opportunity to share her experience of being a teen mom with the girls and offered them advice as they go through this phase of their life.

Commentary This is a brief Background … The American Embassy for a number of

There are class rooms there and the young women in attendance actually are back in school. Formerly a number of these young mothers would drop out of the formal school system and have an uncertain future. There have been success stories as lives have been rehabilitated. In addition to be a drop in centre … babies are taken there by their mothers during class time and are cared for while the mothers are in class. So those lactating can still be attended to.

As was before the venue is Emancipation Park, opposite the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Parking is tight but pedestrians as before attending have no problem … security is good. A massive crowd estimated at 3000 and counting attended. It was a gala event and the Embassy should feel proud of the outcome.

It is an excellent social programme that helps to keep families together. Many of these single moms later get qualified and are professionals today … gainfully employed and taking their rightful places in society.

Women’s Centre

It was great that Fantasia was able to witness first hand a programme like this in Jamaica. This is first world stuff.

Women’s Centre caters for teenage pregnant mothers … offering them educational support in the form of a second chance to further peruse their life’s goals despite getting pregnant early. It is a drop in centre and is funded and operated by the State. Minister Grange has political oversight. The centre falls under the ‘Gender Affairs’ segment of the Ministry of Youth.

Vision has this initiative which has stood the test of time.

We will follow up in Vision with more details on the concert. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent for Vision Newspaper Canada
