The Caribbean Bahamas probes immigration officer accused of sexually assaulting detainee
NASSAU, Bahamas _ The government of the Bahamas says it has placed a senior immigration officer on leave as it investigates allegations that he sexually assaulted a Jamaican detainee. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Saturday that it has spoken with Jamaica’s honorary consul about the case and that police are investigating. The announcement comes just months after the Bahamas approved new residency and work permit rules that prompted authorities to arrest hundreds of migrants living there illegally. Human rights groups have accused the government of holding migrants in a detention centre that lacks adequate access to medicine and sanitary items. The government has denied treating migrants inhumanely but said it would reduce overcrowding by deporting migrants.

Civil rights leaders face backlash over the ambush killings of 2 New York police officers the larger cause. “It sullies the opportunity for us to make inroads to build the relationships we need to build to get the trust back,'' he said. ``This hurts.'' Similarly, the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has called for peaceful protests, condemned ``eye-for-aneye'' violence and called it absurd to blame protesters or politicians for the officers' deaths. “We are now under intense threat from those who are misguided _ from those who are trying to blame everyone from civil rights leaders to the mayor rather than deal with an ugly spirit that all of us need to fight,'' he said. NEW YORK _ Civil rights leaders Sunday condemned the ambush killings of two New York police officers and expressed fear that the backlash over the bloodshed could derail the protest movement that has grown out of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
cluding the attorney general, the mayor and even the president, is simply not fair,'' NAACP President Cornell William Brooks said on CBS's “Face the Nation.''
In the raw hours following the killing of the officers, police union officials and politicians accused those who have protested the deaths of Garner and Brown of fanning anti-police fervour. Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association in New York, said there was “blood on the hands'' of demonstrators and elected officials who have criticized police tactics.
Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were gunned down at close range in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Saturday by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who then committed suicide. Before the attack, Brinsley, 28, wrote on an Instagram account: “I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs.''
The Garner and Brown families issued statements repudiating the officers' killings, while civil rights leaders took to the airwaves to try to put some distance between the movement and the crime. “To link the criminal insanity of a lone gunman to the peaceful protests and aspirations of many people across the country, in-
Brooks said the shootings were “certainly not a step forward'' for the movement.
He used the hashtags Shootthepolice RIPErivGardner (sic) RIPMikeBrown _ references to two blacks who died at the hands of police. Garner died in a New York City officer's chokehold, and Brown was shot by an officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Grand juries decided not to bring charges against either officer. In the wake of the ambush, former New York Mayor Rudy
Giuliani lashed out at New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder. Speaking on Fox News, Giuliani said: ``We've had four months of propaganda starting with the president that everybody should hate the police.''
Sharpton added: “There are those of us committed to nonviolence and making the system work. And there are those committed to anarchy and recklessness who could care less about the families of police or the families who have raised questions about police accountability.''
“They have created an atmosphere of severe, strong, anti-police hatred in certain communities, and for that, they should be ashamed of themselves,'' he said.
Irene Sundiata Myers, a black woman who was selling roses and inspirational words Sunday on Harlem's Malcolm X Boulevard, said that because of Saturday's ambush, some officers might think twice about pulling the trigger on black men.
In a tweet, former New York Gov. George Pataki called the killings the “predictable outcome of divisive, anti-cop rhetoric of Attorney General Eric Holder and Bill De Blasio.'' The accusations stoked fears that any gains made in the protest movement would be lost. “We've been denouncing violence in our community,'' no matter who the target is, New York community activist Tony Herbert said. He said he worries that the shooting will be used to discredit
“It will change the attitude of police across the country in terms of how they go about killing black men, if they begin to think that there's a possibility that there will be a retribution,'' she said. Cosby not finding support in black community amid accusations of drugging, assaulting women Cosby's comments prompted spirited debate. Some commentators backed his call for greater personal responsibility, while others decried the harsh tone he invoked when talking about poorer blacks. Now, Cosby's criticism may be causing younger blacks not to defend him, said Tamara Winfrey Harris, author of an upcoming book on black women and marriage. They don't have the connection and affection with Cosby that older blacks have.
WASHINGTON _ Bill Cosby hasn't been “America's dad'' for years. For some blacks, he is the cranky uncle complaining about young African Americans who, in his view, dress and behave in a way that drags down their race. The shift in perceptions of Cosby, from revered comedian to more of a public scold, may be costing him support in the black community as he battles decades-old accusations of drugging and sexually assaulting women. Few people outside Cosby's circle of family and friends are rallying around him. Besides the gravity of the accusations, Cosby's own words may help explain why. “He's asking people to pull up their pants and act right,'' said Fredrick Harris, director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University. “People are questioning, 'Why were you unzipping yours and pulling yours down?''' More than 15 women have come forward since November claiming to have been drugged, sexually assaulted or both by Cosby, who has never been charged in connection with any of the allegations. A 2005 lawsuit by a Pennsylvania woman was settled before it went to trial. Earlier this month, prosecutors in California declined to pursue charges against him
in the case of Judy Huth, who claimed Cosby molested her 40 years ago. She is one of two women currently suing the entertainer. Since his iconic sitcom “The Cosby Show'' ended in the early 1990s, Cosby has moved away from the benign “Heathcliff Huxtable'' father figure to a chastising curmudgeon, scolding African Americans for what he deemed irresponsible behaviour. The most famous of his critiques came in Washington, D.C. a decade ago during a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, which declared segregated schools unconstitutional. Cosby cited a range of behaviours, from speech and attire to single-parent households and dropout rates as high as 50 per cent in some cities. “Parenting is not going on,'' he said. Lower-income families are not “holding their end in this deal.'' “I'm talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit,'' he elaborated. “Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18, and how come you don't know he had a pistol? And where is his father, and why don't you know where he is?''
“There are generations of young black kids,'' she said, “who didn't grow up with the Huxtables as the picture of the perfect black family.'' “They don't see him as being on their side, so they're not on his,'' she said. That was the attitude of 31-yearold comedian Hannibal Buress, who mentioned the accusations against Cosby during an October show in Philadelphia. That prompted the latest round of accusations from women. “He gets on TV, 'Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the 80s! I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom!''' Buress said. “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.'' Hundreds of thousands of people later viewed the segment from Buress' performance in online videos. Since the allegations emerged, NBC halted work on a Cosby sitcom that was under development. Netflix indefinitely postponed a special that was set to premiere last month. And at least 10 performances in Cosby's standup comedy tour were cancelled. Cosby's wife, Camille, stepped forward earlier this month to defend him. She called him kind, generous and a wonderful husband and father. “He is the man you
thought you knew,'' she said. Their daughter, Evin Cosby, similarly defended him on social media as “the FATHER you thought you knew.'' Cosby himself tried to rally the black community to his side, saying he expected “our black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism, and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind.'' That prompted Bob Butler, president of the National Association of Black Journalists, to immediately fire back, telling TMZ that, as journalists, “You don't go easier on a person with colour.'' Last week, Cosby's spokesman David Brokaw issued a statement denying Cosby expected special treatment from black media, expressing dismay with criticism by Georgetown University sociology professor Michael Eric Dyson, author of a book questioning Cosby's call for black social responsibility. Some entertainers have defended Cosby. Actress/singer Jill Scott, a fellow Philadelphia native, said on Twitter she needed “substantiated proof when media/society is attempting to destroy a magnificent Legacy.'' Comedian Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of ABC's “The View,'' said, “I hope somebody gets to the bottom of this, but I'm going to reserve my judgments because I have a lot of questions.'' Some people may just not want to see Cosby as a sexual predator. “A lot of people are loath to believe any of the allegations,'' Winfrey Harris said. “He's not, 'quote unquote,' that kind of person.'' South Africa’s high crime rate inspires author to write edgy crime fiction
2014 South Africa recorded 17,068 murders in a population of about 50 million, according to the South African police.
“Some of the crimes that happen here are sometimes so heinous that we’re at a loss of how to process them,” says Mary Corrigal, a book critic. “It keeps happening and we don’t really understand why. The novel presents a space for writers to try and process crime in this country _ this terrible phenomenon that holds our society to ransom.”
In this photo taken Monday Nov. 24, 2014, author Angela Makholwa speaks during an interview with The Associated Press in Johannesburg, South Africa. JOHANNESBURG, South Africa _ Novelist Angela Makholwa’s fascination with South Africa’s violent crime has made her one of the country’s most popular writers. Using sharply drawn characters and intriguing plots, Makholwa’s fiction helps South Africans to make sense of the country’s high crime rate. A mother of two who runs a public relations firm, Makholwa said she is inspired by the discomfort caused by crime.
talking about his life, she said. The experience led to her first book, “Red Ink,” the story of a young journalist telling the story of a serial killer, who unwittingly finds herself at the centre of a murder plot. Her next novel, “The Thirtieth Candle” traced the anxiety of four suburban South African women as they approached their 30th birthdays.
“It’s a permanent fixture of our lives. It’s almost part of the fabric of what it is to be a South African,” she said. “It’s hard for me to write an idealized version of what it’s like to live in Johannesburg or South Africa.”
It was her third and most successful book that established Makholwa as a top crime writer. “Black Widow Society” tells the story of a covert cabal of powerful women who assassinate their abusive and wayward husbands.
While working as a writer at a glossy magazine, Makholwa became fascinated by the case of a serial killer. For about a year, she interviewed the convict serving 2,410 years in a maximum security prison in Pretoria for the murder and rape of dozens of women. He was courteous, almost sweet, when
She knew she got the story right when her own husband, a lawyer, said he was disturbed but entertained by her first draft, said Makholwa. “Angela has a unique way of capturing modern South African society and in ”Black Widow Society“
In recent years, crime fiction has become an increasingly popular genre among South African authors and readers, and Corrigal says a common theme of disillusionment and corruption across South African crime fiction paints a “bleak view of society.”
the tables turn and women take control,” said Terry Morris, managing director of Pan Macmillan, Makholwa’s publisher.
“Because the authority figures are corrupt, there’s no real redemption,” she says. “There’s a lingering sense of disorder and chaos.”
Makholwa, a survivor of domestic violence in an earlier relationship, often explores gender disparities in her books. Her sophisticated and conniving heroines serve as a catharsis for her own experiences and subvert a genre that usually portrays women as victims.
South Africa’s fiction has historically been dominated by an image of a country gripped by racial segregation and conflict, and Makholwa said she is excited to be among a new generation of writers exploring a fresh story for an audience looking for entertainment, not only searching for a message about the past.
Makholwa’s characters are snappy and her descriptions of urban South Africa are vivid, say critics. Makholwa has sold thousands of books and has a loyal following. In South Africa, the sale of 2,000 books is considered a bestseller. The 38-year-old will not be “burdened” by the idea that she may be portraying an image of a crime-ridden country, she says it would be a “false picture” if a new generation of South African writers ignored crime. Between April 2013 and March
“Apartheid as a system was so oppressive that it was the only thing you could think about,” said Makholwa. “As South Africans, as a society and as readers, we are maturing. We now truly have an audience that is reading for pleasure.” By Lynsey Chutel THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

'Selma' stars remark on the film's poignancy and parallels to recent protests in the US

NEW YORK _ At last Sunday's premiere of “Selma'' in New York, the cast acknowledged parallels between their film about the African-American civil rights movement and recent protests nationwide, calling attention to the deaths of unarmed black males at the hands of police. “You can look out your window and you can see people protesting and you can look at the film and it looks similar, said Oprah Winfrey, who is a producer on the film and has an acting role as well. ''People are wearing different kind of clothes, it's a different era but the same issues still prevail.” “Selma,'' co-written and directed by Ava DuVernay, is based on the 1965 marches from the Alabama cities of Selma to Montgomery, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. At the time, they were calling for voting rights.
David Oyelowo, who plays King in the film, added “We couldn't have predicted what would happen in terms of what's going on, race relations-wise. We finished shooting in early July and by early August Michael Brown had been murdered and now we're in the middle of the Eric Garner situation. I just think it shows. ... We do not live in a post-racial America.'' He added he hopes “Selma'' shows “that this struggle continues and we all have to participate.'' And participate is what some of the actors in the film have done. Actress Lorraine Toussaint said she took her 10-year-old daughter to march in a protest in New York the day before. “I wanted to make sure that she knows that she can make a difference; that it is important to stand up and speak out
when there is wrong, when there is injustice,'' said Toussaint. “Evil only propagates when we are silent and so you know it's a difficult time but our voices matter and I wanted my daughter to know that her voice matters.'' Others took their activism to the red carpet. Actor Wendell Pierce wore a shirt that said “I Can't Breathe'' for Garner, who died in July at 43-years-old after being put in a chokehold by a New York City police officer during an arrest for allegedly selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. “This is not a movie about the past,'' he said. “It's a movie about a very, very acute present because it's all the same issues that have been going on for a long time.'' Co-star Ruben Santiago-Hudson raised his hands for pho-
tographs, in reference to the killing of Brown, an 18-yearold who reportedly had his hands up when he was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Tyler Perry, who is not in the movie but was there to support Winfrey, said the continued turnout for the protests has given him hope. “Emotionally for me it just let me know that everything is gonna be OK. Everything is gonna be OK. It's like being in a battle with a lion or tiger and then you see all this help coming your way, you know, and I think that it is beyond moving and powerful and phenomenal.'' “Selma'' opens in limited release Dec. 25 and goes wide Jan. 9.
