The Caribbean Severed head of escaped prisoner found in Jamaica; police hunt for body, other escapees
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico _ Jamaican officials say the severed head of a murder suspect who escaped from jail has been found along railroad tracks in a city west of the capital. Police say residents made the discovery Saturday morning near where 26-year-old Duran Colman and four other prisoners broke out of the Spanish Town lockup Dec. 19 by cutting through a metal grille. Colman had faced murder charges, while the others are accused of illegal firearms possession, aggravated assault and robbery. One of the prisoners has already turned himself in. Authorities are still searching for Colman’s body and the other escapees. Jamaica had the world’s sixth-highest homicide rate in 2014, according to the United Nations. The country recorded 1,005 killings last year and officials say the toll could reach 1,200 this year. The Associated Press
Costa Rica moves to deport 56 Cubans who arrived after it halted transit visas for migrants
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica _ Authorities in Costa Rica have begun deportation proceedings for 56 Cuban migrants who entered that Central American nation after it stopped issuing special transit visas for Cubans who are trying to get to the United States. Costa Rican Immigration Director Kathya Rodriguez said Saturday that the 56 Cubans are being held in the capital city of San Jose. They are not among the approximately 8,000 Cubans who have been stranded in Costa Rica since Nov. 13, when Nicaragua began rejecting Cubans from crossing its territory. Costa Rica stopped giving out transit visas to Cubans on Dec. 18. Thousands of Cubans had been migrating through Central America in fear that the year-old warming in U.S.-Cuban relations could end the special immigration privileges Cubans have in the United States. Exhibit shows Harlem born Norman Lewis' depiction of urban struggles, abstract expressionism
PHILADELPHIA _ The evolving styles of Harlem-born artist Norman Lewis are on display in a major retrospective at a museum in Philadelphia. The exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts includes 95 paintings and prints and is loosely chronological with six thematic sections. Lewis first gained attention in the 1930s for his figurative and
literal depictions of struggles facing his urban African-American community. He then began to experiment with abstract impressionism, the realm of painters like Jackson Pollack and Willem de Kooning, whom he later befriended. Some African-Americans artists tried to discourage Lewis's change in style, but he refused to be limited in his work. The exhibition runs through April 3. By Natalie Pompilio THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Burundi: Thousands protest African Union plan to deploy peacekeepers over unrest
KIGALI, Rwanda _ Thousands of supporters of Burundi's president are protesting against the African Union's plan to deploy 5,000 peacekeepers to quell the country's escalating unrest. The demonstration in Bujumbura was led by Vice-President Gaston Sindimwo who insisted Burundi's army is capable of halting violence and protecting all Burundians.
Burundi has been rocked by turmoil since April when it was announced that President Pierre Nkurunziza would run for a third term. Nkurunziza won reelection in July but the violence has since escalated. Earlier this month 87 people died when three military installations were attacked by rebels who said this week they are fighting to topple Nkurunziza. At least 400 people have died since April and some 220,000 have fled to neighbouring countries, according to the United Nations.
The World Guinea president names mining executive as new prime minister to strengthen economy
CONAKRY, Guinea _ Guinea’s president has appointed mining executive Mamady Youla as the West African country’s new prime minister. A government statement says President Alpha Conde made the appointment to support the country’s economic recovery. Youla had been the managing director of Guinea Alumina Corporation from 2004. Mineral-rich Guinea has one of the world’s largest repositories of bauxite but its economy has been hit by the Ebola epidemic that killed more than 2,500 people in the country. The government said the appointment shows Conde’s dedication to support job creation and training, especially for young women and men, and to strengthen companies. Conde was re-elected for second term in October. The former government resigned this week for the change of Cabinet. The government said more ministers will be named in the coming days. Kingston to Ocho Rios, Linstead leg of North Coast Highway almost complete
This Kingston leg of the North Coast Highway (NCH), pictured here from fly over in Linstead, St. Catherine .... when completed will cut travel time by half as traffic congestion will be a thing of the past. Tourism will get a needed boost as travel from say Ocho Rios to Kingston is beset by long delays due to the pile up of traffic in the existing Gorge roadway which is an old two way road. Accidents also lead to delays. Bog Walk Gorge The Rio Cobre River rises on a regular basis. When this happens alternate routes have to be used. The river floods onto the roadway. Dec 31st - Jan 13th 2016 Community The Trudeau Dynasty and The Jamaican Dream been built by migrants, many of whom came from or are descendants of Jamaica and have positively contributed and still are doing so ... impacting positively the growth and development of the great Canadian nation.
As we say good bye to 2015 and look forward to 2016 ... there is this burning if not vexed issue of scamming that is on my mind. The get rich quick mentality is ruining the image of our beloved island. Our long respected nation is being tarnished by scammers. We say to those of us with specialize oral skills and street smarts, ... for goodness sake redeploy such skills to enhancing the growth and development of Jamaica land we love ... long considered pearl of the Caribbean. On the wider international scene, we have seen unfolding the election of another Trudeau to head a Liberal Canadian Government, the Russian doping
scandal in sports, the migration/refugee crisis, the dramatic fall in oil prices, the USA/Cuba make up, the financial mess in Greece, rise in terrorism, abduction of girls, widespread growth in sexual assaults... the growing trend to exploit women in particular with them being used as "spoils of war", the legalising of same sex unions and the bloodshed in Syria/ISIS threat etc. Space does not allow me the luxury of elaborating in any detail on any of these issues .. Daddy Pierre Trudeau came, saw and delivered and in so doing fulfilled many a Jamaican dream. The Canadian society has
Will Justin Trudeau, like in a relay, take the baton to the finish line? Even the high riding USA relay team have repeatedly dropped the baton and have lost a big race which was theirs to win. A lot is expected of this so called "dynasty". Reports to date are that young Justin Trudeau has big shoes to fill.... and has not so far disappointed. Will Justin cement a close personal relationship with Andrew Michael Holness to the mutual benefit of continued sound bilateral relationship with his contemporary and Jamaica? Dynasties are sort of unfair to the new baton recipient .... too much may be expected. The Baton
We recall the internationally acclaimed superstar Usain Bolt getting the baton in a much anticipated relay in the Bahamas world games and failing to finish at the top spot as his opponent had too much an advantage over him. We had to settle for second place. There was the greatest expectation. In the case of young Justin, the new PM of Canada ..... this is an era of great expectations... even greater than CHARLES DICKENS imagined ....Justin dare not drop the baton. We expect a migration friendly foreign policy ...one which will build on the gains which are well documented. But we are not expecting one that is devoid of established checks and balances. Alas! Despite having a Liberal Government on the Hill. Is it not a tad presumptuous if not premature to refer to Justin Trudeau's elevation as PM of Canada, a G7 nation as a "dynasty" .... is this really so in a real sense? Well, to get a possible perspective or answer
you will recall Jamaica's healthcare minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson who declared that premature babies who died in state care were not "babies in the real sense." Insensitivity is not the way to build a dynasty. Do you disagree? Let us get your feedback either way of the coin as you see this issue. (See Vision Newspaper for Ferguson's comment). Jamaican health-care professionals, especially their nurses are well sought after in Canada and elsewhere, and so are their apple pickers, truck drivers to name a few. Their contribution is legendary. It is a mutually beneficial relationship.
We believe the excellent relationship Michael Manley enjoyed with Pierre Trudeau played a pivotal role in Jamaica's progressive bilateral relations with the then Liberal Government of Canada. We dare not drop the baton as this could tarnish the Pierre Trudeau legacy and ultimately make a mockery or tarnish the Trudeau dynasty in a real sense. Music Neko Xcellent’s Thinking Big
Dec 31st - Jan 13th 2016
Hailing from the beautiful and prominent land of Jamaica, we can say that the soul-capturing and body-grooving sounds this Island is known for, is embedded in Neko. Starting his musical upbringing from the age of 10, his gifts were cultivated in the church. Playing around with pots, buckets and sticks,
to playing on broken drum-sets, to being the drummer and sometimes pianist or guitarist, when needed. But it wasn’t until his 20’s that Neko began to realize his musical ability transcended to singing; and that became his passion. Neko released a Hit Single, followed by his first Album “Livin’ My Life” in order to spread his words with the world. One after the other hits were released, spreading throughout the U.S., Canada, Caribbean Islands, Europe and various parts of Africa, the motherland.
Sharing stages with and being mentored by giants in the industry, such as the Ed Robinson, Professor Nuts, Ziggy Marley, Papa San, Marcia Griffiths; also touring with I.Octaine, one of Jamaica’s highest demand, Neko Xcellent is no stranger to the Art of Music & Performance. “My aim is to inspire all, but especially the fatherless youths and the unfortunate, and let them know, where there is life, there is hope. You can make it from nothing to something. If I can do it, you can do so much more.” Written with this mindset, Neko asked the question “Why?” and that continued in the line of reaching supporters from all over. Neko recently launched his new single and first official music video entitled “Thinkin’ Big”, which has
viraled through the internet and have filled the waves of various radio stations. Neko’s style includes, but is not limited to, a variety of genres such as Gospel, Reggae, Pop and Contemporary. As 2015 comes to a close, all of Neko Xcellent’s fans and supporters can look forward to ending the year with a bang as Neko will be releasing a fresh new vibe dedicated to all the ladies ready to bust a new move in the new year, titled “Bust A Whine Gyal”. MEEK MILL VIOLATED PROBATION PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Meek Mill could go back to jail. A judge in Philadelphia has found Mill guilty of probation violations. Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley says Mill cannot work or perform before his hearing on February 5th, except for community service. Brinkley sent Mill back to jail for five months last year for similar violations. He was convicted in 2009 on drug and gun charges. Prosecutors say he ignored rules about letting the court know his travel plans and submitted cold water instead of a urine sample for a drug test. His girlfriend, Nicki Minaj, and music producer Kenny Gamble of Gamble and Huff had testified on Mill's behalf.

Trumpeter Lee Loughnane (LOK'-nayn) of Chicago tells Billboard magazine many people assumed they were already in the Rock Hall, and now that they're being inducted, he had no idea it would be as exciting as it is. Drummer Ian Paice of Deep Purple tells Rolling Stone he's thrilled Deep Purple will be inducted at the same time as Chicago. Paice says they have not had contact with singer Rod Evans in decades and Paice has no idea if Evans is even alive, let alone if he'll show up to the induction in April.

Music Review: Chris Brown is multi dimensional on solid seventh album, 'Royalty'
9
Omari Banks Launches "Ashe Sundays" Live Concerts Series in Anguilla
Brown pushes the R&B envelope, too, linking with Dutch DJ-producer Afrojack _ who worked on Brown's ``Look at Me Now'' _ for the very sexy ``Discover,'' with its trap-inspired production and slinky lyrics. And Brown gives typical R&B groveling a fresh spin on ``Proof,'' thanks, in large part, to help from ``Trap Soul'' singer Bryson Tiller, who co-wrote the track.
Chris Brown, ``Royalty'' (RCA) Chris Brown knows his strengths, and on his seventh studio album, ``Royalty,'' the singer plays to them with solid success. It's a feat worth applauding, considering how disparate the multi-dimensional singer's specialties seem to be. There's the electro-dance stuff: the contagiously upbeat ``Fine By Me''; the mid-tempo and cool ``Zero''; and the Tayla Parx-assisted ``Anyway,'' with its arena-filling waves of synth sounds. It's good, radio friendly pop music that seems as natural to Brown as traditional R&B fare, which he delivers with expertise on the old school-leaning ``Make Love''; the sweet but slightly explicit ``Back to Sleep''; and the steamy, Keith Sweat-inspired ``Who's Gonna (Nobody).''
Last, but not least, there is ``Brown, the singer-with-rapper-sensibilities,'' who shows up on ``Little Bit,'' singing, ``Baby, you been on that pole too long.'' The singer's edgier side appears again on the very likable ``Wrist,'' featuring Solo Lucci. All-in-all, ``Royalty'' is a worthwhile collection, proving that in a world where ``stay in your lane'' is common wisdom, it doesn't exactly apply to people like Brown, who have a few lanes to choose from. ____ Follow Melanie J. When Luciano emerged as Jamaica’s next big thing in the early ’90s, it wasn’t because he was breaking new stylistic ground or hitching his wagon to reggae’s latest trends. It was because, at a time when it was less than fashionable to do so, he looked toward classic roots reggae, gave it a booster shot and reminded the genre’s audience that saying something still meant something. Luciano’s upcomming release Tittled “Reggae Legends” contains 4CDs with a total of 59 tracks. The album is set to be

Rapper and actor LL Cool J back as Grammy host for fifth straight year
NEW YORK _ The Grammy Awards will celebrate a lot of new music, but its ceremony will have a familiar face up-front in host LL Cool J. The Recording Academy announced Wednesday that the rap artist and actor will be the master of ceremonies for the fifth consecutive year. The Grammys will be telecast Feb. 15 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Somewhat unique to awards shows, the Grammys traditionally focus more on performances than trophy delivery. The host tends to have a lower profile than on other awards shows. Recording Academy President Neil Portnow says LL Cool J's personality and energy set the perfect tone for the show. __

NBA MVP Stephen Curry becomes fourth basketball player to win AP Male Athlete of Year the results released Saturday. He joined LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird as the only basketball players to win the honour in the 85 years of the award. Curry beat out golfer Jordan Spieth, who won two majors, and American Pharoah, who became the first horse since 1978 to win the Triple Crown. While American Pharoah got three more first-place votes than Curry's 24, Curry appeared on 86 per cent of the 82 ballots that ranked the top five candidates. More than one-third of the voters left American Pharoah off their list. “That's a real honour,'' Curry said. “I'm appreciative of that acknowledgement because it's across all different sports. ... It's pretty cool.''
OAKLAND, Calif. _ Stephen Curry's greatness as a basketball player can be measured by his record-setting shooting numbers that are changing the game. His immense popularity derives from something less tangible. While many NBA greats rely on uncommon height and athletic ability that average fans can only dream of having, Curry's game relies on the traits that every casual player can work on: shoot, dribble and pass. The difference is, perhaps nobody ever has put those three skills together the same way Curry has the past year as he has dominated on the court and made the once downtrodden Golden State Warriors the NBA's must-watch team.
“The way that I play has a lot of skill but is stuff that if you go to the YMCA or rec leagues or church leagues around the country, everybody wants to shoot, everybody wants to handle the ball, make creative passes and stuff like that,'' he said. “You can work on that stuff. Not everybody has the vertical, or the physical gifts to be able to go out and do a windmill dunk and stuff like that. I can't even do it.'' That's about all Curry is unable to do on the basketball court. His amazing year, in which he won an MVP, led to Golden State to its first title in 40 years and helped the Warriors get off to a record-setting start this season earned him The Associated Press 2015 Male Athlete of the Year. Curry finished first in a vote by U.S. editors and news directors, with
Curry has become the face of the NBA this past year. His jersey is the bestseller in the league, his team's games get record television ratings at home and in opposing markets and even his 3-year-old daughter Riley became a star by overshadowing her dad at playoff news conferences. Even his intricate warmup routine has become a show for fans who get out early or even sometimes on TV pregame shows. He does an elaborate two-ball dribbling routine, works on passes and shots with both hands, takes jump shots from just inside half court and then caps it with a long-range shot from the tunnel on the way back to the locker room. “Steph actually looks different,'' ESPN analyst Jalen Rose said. “Like the best player in the league usually is also physically opposing _ 6-6 plus, scowl on his face, menacing. With the attitude that we appreciated because like a Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Neal, or Kobe Bryant, you know, just a cutthroat nature. Steph allows us
into his living room. We see him on a national stage be a son, a dad, a husband, a father, a brother. And he does all of it while continuing to improve.'' Curry has improved his scoring from 23.8 points per game to 30.8 _ the biggest one-year jump ever by an MVP _ prompting Rose to say that Curry could be the most improved player and repeat as MVP this season in a remarkable tribute to the off-season work he put in even after winning a title. He has become much more efficient scoring on drives and has amazingly added range to his already record-setting 3-point shooting. Curry can consistently make shots from 28 feet out as he is on pace to shatter his own record of 3-pointers made in a season. The drive to succeed is fueled by the fact that Curry got no major scholarship offers coming out of high school, he was the third point guard taken in the 2009 draft and he settled for a below-market contract extension three years ago because people questioned his durability following ankle injuries. “The thing I would say about Steph, what makes him who he is, is that nobody has to challenge him to get to the next level because he does it on his own,'' coach Steve Kerr said. “I didn't think he could get that much better from last year but I do think he's gotten considerably better, which is quite a feat when you're the reigning MVP.'' Will Smith enlightened by 'Concussion' role playing doctor who diagnosed risks to NFL players edge to become a voice for the voiceless, to make a difference, just like Will Smith,'' Omalu said. Smith said the script enlightened him about the dangerous effects of multiple concussions. ``When I met Bennet and went through the science, I was terrified as a parent,'' Smith said. ``My son played football for four years and I had no idea this was an issue.''
NEW YORK _ While the new Will Smith film ``Concussion'' may lead some to question their support of the NFL, the forensic pathologist who first drew attention to the dangers of repeated head trauma said he wanted his discoveries to ``advance football.'' ``Concussion'' tells the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu who stumbled upon an insidious brain disorder affecting football players that began in 2002 with an autopsy on former Pittsburgh Steelers centre Mike Webster. ``I had this hunger in me to use my knowl-
Omalu studied the brains of NFL players who had died under dubious circumstances, including former NFL players Justin Strzelczyk, Terry Long, and Andre Waters, who are depicted in the film. Strzelczyk was involved in a head-on collision on the wrong side of the highway evading police; Waters shot himself in the head; and Terry Long died from drinking anti-freeze. His study, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh's pathology department, led to the discovery that the former players were suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, an asymptomatic brain disease. The effects of the incurable disease don't show up until later in life and manifest as psychotic episodes, dementia,
and suicide. CTE had been researched previously in boxers and it had been identified in soccer and rugby players, though Omalu's work first linked it to American football players and has sparked broad discussions about player safety. After researching the role and learning more about the condition, Smith remains a football fan. Yet, he feels different about the game. ``I wanted to be a part of it just to deliver information to parents and to players because if I didn't know, I felt a lot of other people didn't know,'' Smith said. David Morse, who plays Webster in the film, found the role a challenge. ``(Mike Webster) was adored by people, the city of Pittsburgh, but what we see is a man at the end of his life with dementia,'' Morse said. ``He's gluing his teeth in with Super Glue, tasering himself. He's just in a kind of hell at the end of his life.'' Webster's problems progressed after his 1997 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He went on a downward spiral, dying in 2002 at age 50.
watch it, but I understand way more about what's happening to these people on the field.'' On Wednesday, Sony Pictures issued an invitation to team owners, players and their families to see concussion to free _ an offer Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin said he was taking them up on it as he'd planned to see the movie anyway. ``I feel like it's going to have a contradicting interest just for the NFL in period, but then again we eventually knew this was going to happen anyway,'' Griffin said. `` A lot of people in general you read about concussions or hear the stories about stuff, but I don't think anybody knows, for the fans for their pleasure what we actually put our bodies through each and every week. It's crazy because people say mild concussion or whatever, but any type of concussion, when it comes to injury to the brain, it's serious. That's a vital organ. ... I think it's going to be a good movie, but it may play a big part throughout the NFL.`` ___ AP Pro Football Writer Teresa M. Walker in Nashville, Tennessee contributed to this story. ___

Jersey Turnpike. He was not in court Wednesday, and an arraignment will be scheduled at a later date, said a spokesman for the prosecutor's office. His lawyer, David Glassman, told The Associated Press last week that he faulted the Middlesex County prosecutor's office for not stepping in and seeking a stay in the federal lawsuit. NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. _ A New Jersey grand jury on Wednesday indicted the truck driver who crashed into a limo van carrying Tracy Morgan, killing one man and severely injuring the comedian. The grand jury charged Kevin Roper with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree aggravated assault charges in the 2014 crash. Roper's attorney tried unsuccessfully to have previous charges of vehicular homicide and assault by auto thrown out. His lawyer argued Tuesday that Wal-Mart's settlement of Morgan's lawsuit generated publicity that harmed the Jonesboro, Georgia, resident's chance for a fair trial. Roper was driving a Wal-Mart truck when the crash occurred on the New
A National Transportation Safety Board investigation concluded in August that Roper hadn't slept during the previous 28 hours before the crash, a finding Glassman has disputed. The report concluded Roper failed to slow down immediately before the crash, despite posted warning signs on the turnpike. The board also faulted Morgan and other passengers in the limo van for not wearing seat belts and adjusting headrests, which it said contributed to the severity of their injuries when the limo was struck from behind.
