The Caribbean Dominican Republic judge orders transportation union leader held in murder investigation

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ A judge in the Dominican Republic has ordered the leader of a public transportation union held for one year while authorities investigate allegations of his involvement in several killings. Police say Arsenio Quevedo is accused of planning and paying for the killing of at least three drivers following arguments with them in recent years. He also is accused of laundering fuel subsidies that his union received monthly. Quevedo is expected to remain in jail as the investigation continues. Also charged in the case is a local government official accused of overseeing a ring of hit men that police allege participated in the killings.

St. Kitts suspends Syrian nationals from its citizenship by investment program It says Prime Minister Timothy Harris announced the suspension of Syrians from his country's citizenship program at a Thursday reception in Washington.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts _ St. Kitts and Nevis has closed its citizenship-by-investment program to Syrians until further vetting processes can be put in place. A Friday statement from legal advisory firm CS Global Partners says the tiny Caribbean nation made the decision because of reports of counterfeit Syrian passports in the international black market.

St. Kitts closed its program to Iranians several years ago after Iranian students stormed the British Embassy in Tehran. Caribbean nations such as St. Kitts, Dominica and Grenada offer investors a quick path to citizenship at a relatively low cost. A foreigner can qualify for St. Kitts citizenship with a $250,000 donation or a $400,000 real estate investment. The Associated Press

Federal judge sentences man to 20 years in Jamaican lottery scam that cost victims million

He promised protection from discrimination and vowed dogged investigations of hate crimes. The speech comes as the administration has bolstered its outreach efforts to the city's 800,000 Muslims. Administration officials say they've sought to calm fears of retaliation in the wake of last month's Paris attacks.

BISMARCK, N.D. _ A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a Jamaican lottery scam that authorities say cost victims around the country millions of dollars. A jury in May convicted 26-year-old Sanjay Williams, of Montego Bay, Jamaica, of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Williams on Tuesday in Bismarck. Prosecutors say the case came to light four years ago when an elderly North Dakota woman received a call from a man who told her she had won $19 million and a new car, and needed only to pay taxes and fees. The process dragged on until the widow’s savings were wiped out. Prosecutors say subsequent investigations identified more than 70 people who were scammed out of more than $5 million.

NEW YORK _ Mayor Bill de Blasio has praised the contribution of Muslims to New York City in a speech at an Islamic community centre. Speaking at the Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens on Friday night, de Blasio said the city must also deepen its relationship with the Muslim community.

The city's relationship with the Muslim community hasn't always been strong. The Associated Press revealed in a series of stories that the NYPD intelligence division conducted surveillance in Muslim communities after the September 11 attacks. Officials say that unit's been disbanded.

50, 000 persons of all walks of life converged on HalfWay-Tree Square in Jamaica for Anti Gay rally

PM Portia Simpson Miller, in the 2012 Election Campaign .... then Opposition Leader promised to review the Buggery Act. She also promised to allow a "conscience vote" in the House on this "messy" subject. Most Jamaicans are widely believed to be defiantly homophobic. Four years later these election promises have not materialized. The church leaders have united against the possible repeal of this Buggary act. It is with this background that two rallies have been staged under the umbrella organization called Churches Action Uniting Society For Emancipation (CAUSE) Recently some 50, 000 persons of all walks of life converged on HalfWay-Tree Square, JAMAICA,W.I. (see picture) Speaker after speaker condemned ho-

mosexuality, and promoted wholesome traditional family values. Jamaicans have long been viewed as "Christians" and regularly quote among other books, the book of Leviticus from the Holy Bible, as the yardstick for their moral judgement to guide their sexual/moral conduct. The Good Book, the bible, speaks out against people of "reprobate mind". People of the same sex lying with each other is a no no for Christians ... and by extension nothing to glorify .... much less concretize..... as it relates to marriage. This type of lifestyle is an abomination to the Christian prospective and is to be frowned on or condemned. In an exclusive interview President of Lawyers Christian Fellowship, Helen Coley-Nicholson declared in a telephone link up " We are firm on our views, we support sound family values based on biblical principles . We are not going to be led to feel ashamed of our position. We believe in freedom of expression .... we are not going to feel guilty or made to feel guilty as a result of our position."

Juliet Holness, wife of Opposition Leader Andrew Michael Holness is to enter politics but such is likely to be formalities, our sources have advised. This would create history should it happen. Juliet Holness has two boys with husband Andrew Michael Holness a former Prime Minister of Jamaica under the previous JLP Government and now Opposition Leader.

It has not been officially confirmed but impeccable sources have informed Vision Newspaper, that Juliet Holness, a Chartered Accountant and Real Estate Developer has been eying a seat made vacant by Senator Alexander Williams’s resignation as caretaker/candidate for the St. Andrew East seat on the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) ticket. It is considered a battleground seat as it has changed hands in previous elections and could go either way. Power Behind Throne Mrs Juliet Holness is highly respected and is credited with being the “power” behind her husband’s political successes. As a former first lady she no doubt has ambitions to not only return to Jamaica House but as a Parliamentarian sitting in the House as a MP.

If her bid for the seat materializes, she will oppose Senator Imani Duncan-Price also a first time candidate for the People’s National Party (PNP). The seat is currently held by Entertainment MINISTER Damion Crawford, who was rejected in a selection exercise in a vote seen as a lack of confidence in his stewardship as MP. “An interesting development” is how a seasoned talk show host has described the possible occurrence …. believed to be a done deal. Many Jamaicans are not yet aware of this new development, like wine it would secretly be fermenting out of sight. by Hopeton Dennie Senior international Photojournalist.

Final design of African American Museum in Charleston under way as Boeing donates $500K

A rendering of the planned International African American Museum in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. _ Final design of a planned $75 million African American museum in Charleston is underway and the project has received a boost with a $500,000 donation from Boeing. Local media outlets report that Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., discussed the donation Wednesday after it was announced earlier in the week in Columbia. The aeronautics giant that operates a 787 jet assembly plant in North Charleston also made a donation of $250,000 to the museum four years ago. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 on the museum planned on the site of a former wharf where tens of thousands of slaves first set foot in North

America. The museum was first proposed almost 16 years ago to tell the story of those who arrived on this continent in chains, both describing where they came from and what they did to help build the United States. The wharf where thousands of slaves landed was built by Revolutionary War leader Christopher Gadsden, also known for designing the yellow rattlesnake flag of the period with the legend “Don't Tread on Me.'' The concept calls for one side of the 42,000-square-foot museum to have large windows looking out on the water where slaves arrived in the holds of ships. That will be mirrored on the other side of the building with windows

history centre where, using touchscreen technology, visitors can do genealogical research and add their own stories to a

database that tells the stories of blacks in the United States.

Richmond District, well known as the home of the Richmond low security correctional facility commonly refereed to as the “gentleman’s prison” … as it is home to low risk non violent offenders, located in the cool hills of St. Mary…. an otherwise farming community. It was ironic that this rather off the beaten track location would have attracted such a massive crowd estimated to be thirty five thousand (35000) and growing by the minute. The jubilant, flag waving, horn blowing and bell ringing green clad “disciples” of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) transformed the town into a sea of green. The loyal activists and supporters patiently waited some three hours before party leader Andrew Michael Holness’s eagerly

anticipated arrival. It was a carnival type atmosphere. A handful of police officers stood by to keep the peace ….. there were no reports requiring arrests according to a police source. In fact the security detail for Opposition Leader and former PM Holness almost outnumbered local police. It was a scene to behold. To the left, to the right and two blocks in front was in rich living columns of people of all walks of life. The strong outpouring of love and support for the JLP Leader and his political cause was evident. Many displayed his image on green background shirts. by Hopeton O’CONNOR-DENNIE, senior International Correspondent & photojournalist,

Nae Nae Rides Airwaves with New Single and Video Dancehall Diva Nae Nae steps out and shows the world that she’s more than what meets the eye with her latest single “Fantasy Ride.” The upcoming sensation burst into the scene officially in 2012 and has been riding the airwaves ever since. Nae Nae is known widely for her rambunctious demeanor, and her energetic and vibrant personality; all of which is highlighted in her single and more so in the video. The erotic single, was produced by Icon Music Group and is made available on all digital platforms by 21 Hapilos Entertainment on October 30 2015. The music video was shot by noted director Wayne South and released on Friday November 13, 2015 In the scenes throughout the video Nae Nae is seen parading seductively and provocatively in lingerie and different skin tight apparel inviting her conquest

on a “fantasy ride”. Due to the suggestive nature of the video it has gotten some harsh backlash. The diva is in strong defense of her material and in response says this will not slow her down in any way or prevent her from releasing other videos of this nature. “I want to be the talked about female artiste in the industry; my music is not the soft ‘girl next door’ type, I like being sexy and sassy” She explains that many videos have been played on various public television stations with a similar or even more intense sexual appeal and she does not see why people are in awe of my material when others are doing worse by comparison. In the near future Nae Nae will be releasing some sizzling collaborations with Reddis, Bay C and dancehall newest sensation Razor B.

7 Music No time for wardrobe changes as Erykah Badu hosts Soul Train Awards and readies new mixtape

December 3rd - 16th 2015

AP: Can you tell us who? Badu: I really cannot tell you. All 12 apostles. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. AP: Everyone seems to love Drake _ you included. Why do you think that is?

NEW YORK _ Erykah Badu is answering a phone call: her new eyeglasses are ready, and the frames are available for pick-up when she has time. “I figured you'd probably been busy,'' the guy from the optical shop says. He's right. Badu hosted the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards earlier this month in Las Vegas, and she's been doing press ahead of the show's premiere on BET and Centric. “I've had this on for about two months,'' Badu says of the outfit she's wearing _ shiny black overalls, sky-high top hat and a chambray button-up with a wooden bowtie that reads “HELLO''). “It was the last thing I had on at Soul Train. (and) I haven't had a break since then.'' She's also been sharing material from her upcoming mixtape, “BUT YOU CAINT USE MY PHONE,'' titled after a famous line from her equally famous 1997 single, “Tyrone.'' It's set for release Friday.

In an interview with The Associated Press backstage at “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,'' 44-year-old Badu talks about the hosting gig, new music and platinum-selling rapper Drake, whose “Hotline Bling'' single she remixed and released in October. ___ AP: You hosted the Soul Train Music Awards in 1998. How was your experience this year? Badu: It was really fun. And this time around they made me an associate producer, so I had an opportunity to write my material, which I think is really cool _ to, you know, see my things crystalize _ my words and my sense of humour, which is pretty unique and self-serving. AP: What made you say yes to the job? Badu: I thought that, 'Hey, this is a great opportunity to expose myself to this naked place. this place that I had not been welcomed before.' I'm known for the singing, and stuff like that.

No one knows that I direct all my videos and write all of the treatments. No one knows that I do all of my own artwork. No one knows that, you know, this is me. I pick my clothes out. No one knows any of those things. So I think that it's a good time to start exposing my art to the air. AP: What's up with the mixtape? Badu: It's really, really, really, really awesome. I first did a remake of Drake's 'Hotline Bling' because I thought it was an awesome song. I actually did it for Big Mike's birthday. Big Mike's my road manager, tour manager. That's his favourite song. as well as a lot of other people's, too. And it came out good. And I just stayed in that studio, in the bedroom, and I just kept writing songs, making songs, writing songs. And about 10 days later, I had this mixtape. AP: Are there any special guests? Badu: Absolutely.

Badu: He's a brilliant genius. He's a genius. He's a talented actor. He's a brilliant comedian _ comedic timing is perfection. He's a talented songwriter. He's a talented singer. He's an exquisite, extraordinary producer. He's a great person. ...He invited me to Canada to listen to (2011 album) 'Take Care,' and you know, I went there and listened to the album. You know, (I'm) just really proud to see his evolution. He's one of the few artists I can say is really evolving each time he appears. And that's inspiring to me. And that's my challenge. AP: You do a lot of things _ make music, write comedy, help deliver babies as a doula. How do you stay so 'unstuck'? Badu: I don't know. I just, I guess I don't judge. You know, that helps you not be stuck. You know, people say hip-hop is dead, and they say soul music is dead and those kind of things, but it won't die if you allow it to evolve. If you allow its essence to grow inside of the young people_ because they carry it. As they grow, I grow with them. ____ Online: http://www.bet.com/shows/soul-train-awards. html By Melanie J. Canadian sprint sensation Andre De Grasse signs eight figure shoe deal with Puma

Andre De Grasse has signed the largest initial shoe contract in track and field history. The 21-year-old sprint sensation from Markham, Ont., signed a multi-year deal with Puma worth approximately US$11.25 million. With bonuses, he could earn as much as US$30 million, according to his agency Doyle Management. “Signing this partnership with Puma is a major thing for me, in such an important phase in my career,'' De Grasse said in a release. “I have massive dreams for what I want to accomplish and Puma clearly shares my belief, they will give me great support along my journey.'' De Grasse is coming off a spectacular season that saw him win bronze in the 100 metres at the world championships at just 20 years old. He also swept gold in the 100 and 200 metres at both the Pan American Games and the NCAA championships for the USC Trojans. His professional deal means he must forgo his senior season of eligibility, but he'll continue to work with USC coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert while he completes his degree. “Andre has risen to the top of the sport very quickly and I'm both happy and proud that USC could be a part of his journey,'' Smith-Gilbert said. “What Andre accomplished in his short time here at USC was nothing short of amazing, and we look to support him

in any way possible as he embarks on his professional career.'' De Grasse joins a star-studded group of Puma sprinters that includes Jamaican stars Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell. Bolt re-signed with Puma in 2013 for an estimated US$10 million a year, a contract that will take him to the end of his career. The world record-holder in the 100 and 200 metres signed with Puma as a teenager. De Grasse grew up playing soccer and basketball, and didn't run a track race until Grade 12, when coach Tony Sharp spotted him at a meet at York University. Sharp said the decision to go pro was the “right thing to do at the right time.'' “It's going to be a busy time but I think it's a win all around. One semester to go, managing school work and focusing on track,'' Sharp said. “Hopefully the demand from any potential sponsors won't interfere with training time, because you can't lose sight of the goal to get to Rio and perform. “But he's a humble kid, and I think that helps, and his character is pretty low-key, so hopefully he retains that humble demeanour and I think he'll be fine.'' Raptors’ DeMar DeRozan grew up emulating retiring Lakers star Kobe Bryant

TORONTO _ DeMar DeRozan was 16 years old when he was invited to Kobe Bryant’s camp for the top 25 American high school shooting guards. A friendship grew between the Toronto Raptors all-star and the third leading scorer in NBA history. And moments after the Raptors’ 107-102 loss Sunday night to Phoenix, DeRozan talked at length about Bryant, calling it “an honour” to know him. Bryant announced Sunday night via a post on “The Players’ Tribune” that he’ll retire at season’s end, capping a 20-year NBA career. “It’s crazy. The knowledge that he tended to give me every time I got the chance to be around him, especially at a young age, carrying over to the league, it was definitely an honour,” DeRozan said. “I tried to listen as much as possible, soak in as much as I could all of the time. It’s crazy how much time flies.” Bryant was DeRozan’s favourite player while growing up in Compton, Calif. “I’ve tried to emulate and learn so much from him ever since I was a kid, watching every single game growing up in Los Angeles, having a chance to get with him and learn from him, from conversations even when I was in high school from playing against him, completing against him, being in big games with him,” said DeRozan, who scored a game-high 29 points in Sunday’s loss. “It’s definitely a sad, sad day but he’s been in the game a long time.”

Bryant’s announcement came just prior to the Lakers’ game against the visiting Indiana Pacers, and fans at the game received a letter of thanks from the 37-year-old in a black envelope embossed with gold. Bryant has struggled mightily with injuries the past several years, and is shooting a career-worst 32 per cent this season. But DeRozan said that won’t taint how he’s remembered. “It don’t matter. That man has five rings, 17 all-stars, MVP.” DeRozan said. “There’s nothing he hasn’t done. It’s just father time catching up with him, injuries catching up with him this past year. People will appreciate it when he’s away from the game.” DeRozan said his favourite Kobe memory was when the Lakers superstar dropped a staggering 81 points on the Raptors in 2006. DeRozan, who would join the Raptors as a rookie three years later, said he felt like he was playing a video game watching the high-scoring spectacle unfold on TV. DeRozan, who’s in his seventh season with Toronto, can’t imagine playing 20. “Especially playing at a high level, doing the things he was doing. . . people don’t understand how hard that is,” DeRozan said. “Even now, a lot of us find ourselves tired (on) back-tobacks. It’s tough. It’s really tough. To do it 20 years at a high level, you have to give that man every credit in the world.”

Film Review: Spike Lee's blistering 'Chi Raq' is an urgent plea for peace power grid'' being shut down. Some scenes don't work, particularly a cartoonish one with a racist Dixieland general (David Patrick Kelly), who ends up straddling a Civil War cannon in Confederate flag underpants. John Cusack as the Rev. Mike Corridan, who preaches at a funeral, is jarringly bad casting. There's also a lingering feeling that in bringing the gender roles of ancient Greece to present-day South Chicago, Lee has reduced modern women to sex objects (albeit empowered ones) and men to libido-driven dogs.

More alive than most of the year's films put together, Spike Lee's ”Chi-Raq'' is urgent agitprop that pulsates with unalloyed rage for the “self-inflicted genocide'' of South Chicago and explodes with full-hearted (and gloriously lewd) pleas for peace. It's wildly uneven but it is wild. There's plenty here to quibble with (the film's title prompted outrage in Chicago), but unassailable is its passion to bring attention and compassion to Chicago's blood-soaked streets. “This is an emergency'' flashes across the screen early in “Chi-Raq,'' a hip-hop musical and a social satire that Lee co-wrote with Kevin Willmott (``C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America'') and sets to the beat of Terence Blanchard's score. It's an updating of Aristophanes' ancient Greek comedy “Lysistrata,'' in which Athenian women wage a sex strike against their warrior men

to end the Peloponnesian War. Lee and Willmott have transplanted the tale to Chicago, where the murder rate has far surpassed the number of Americans killed in Iraq.
