Gunmen open fire on motorcade by Jamaica opposition party
KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Police say gunmen have opened fire on a campaign motorcade by Jamaica’s main opposition party and killed one man as it travelled through a troubled neighbourhood. Investigators say three others were wounded by gunfire in the Jamaica Labor Party motorcade. About 12 cars also were damaged by hurled rocks. The violence occurred in Flankers, an impoverished community in northern Jamaica that has historically been a reliable source of votes for Labor. In a Wednesday police statement, Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor said political organizers had been told not to send campaign motorcades there due to recent violence. Two men from Flankers were killed late Sunday when gunfire broke out at a Labor rally in nearby Montego Bay. Jamaica will hold general elections Feb. 25. The Associated Press

Company spokesman Ray Sangster says it makes no sense to invest in new plants because current ones are withering given the lack of significant rainfall since September. He said Monday that the decision will have a severe impact on production starting next year. This year’s estimated production of 240,000 metric tons (265,000 tons) of sugar remains on target. Guyana is the largest sugar-producing country in the Caribbean Community trade bloc, but it has seen a steady drop in production blamed on bad weather, labour shortage and industrial strikes.

The World Police protect Dublin funeral of gang figure slain in feud
DUBLIN _ Armed police have deployed a security cordon around a gangland funeral in Dublin as senior underworld figures mourn a henchman gunned down 10 days ago. Bomb-sniffing dogs swept the scene ahead of Monday’s funeral of David Byrne, a member of the international drug-trafficking gang of Christy Kinahan. The 34-year-old Byrne was killed by a rival criminal faction Feb. 3 when five gunmen _ three disguised as an elite police unit, one dressed as a blonde woman _ stormed into a Dublin hotel hosting a boxing weigh-in and targeted figures connected to Kinahan’s Spain-based empire. Two other men were wounded. Signs outside the venue, St. Nicolas of Myra Catholic Church, warned photographers to stay out of the church grounds. Last week journalists covering the gang war received death threats. The Associated Press

HARARE, Zimbabwe _ Zimbabwean aviation authorities impounded a U.S.-registered cargo jet, a senior official said Monday, after a dead body later believed to be a stowaway and millions of South African rand were found on board. The Herald, a state-run newspaper, reported that the MD-11 trijet was travelling from Germany to South Africa “with millions of rands.” At today’s exchange rate, 1 million rand is worth $62,500. Authorities here learned the money belonged to the South Africa Reserve Bank. Police planned to issue a state-
The crew did not know there was someone else on the plane, according to a police officer, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. It appears from photos on social media that the dead person had sneaked into the plane’s landing gear which severed his arm when it contracted, causing blood to splatter onto the fuselage and arousing suspicion of the ground crew when the flight landed here. The crew, according to the Herald, includes two Americans, a South African and a Pakistani. By Farai Mutsaka
JOHANNESBURG _ South African police are securing roads around parliament ahead of expected protests against President Jacob Zuma, who will give a state-of-the-nation address amid harsh criticism of his conduct. Zuma could face disruption inside the parliament building during the Thursday evening speech, which will be shown live on television. Some opposition lawmakers have threatened to interrupt proceedings because of a scandal over millions of dollars in state spending on the president’s private home. Zuma offered to pay back some money in a concession to critics, who accuse him of violating the constitution. The president is also under pressure to explain why he fired Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene in December, a move that unsettled investors and further weakened the national currency. South Africa is struggling with slow economic growth.

UN working group suggests US work on racial reconciliation
UN working group suggests US work on racial reconciliation WASHINGTON _ The United States should consider reparations to African-American descendants of slavery, establish a national human rights commission and publicly acknowledge that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was a crime against humanity, a United Nations working group said recently. The U.N. Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent released its preliminary recommendations after more than a week of meetings with black Americans and others from around the country, including Baltimore, Chicago, New York City, Washington and Jackson, Mississippi.
After finishing their fact-finding mission, the working group was “extremely concerned about the human rights situation of African-Americans,” chair Mireille Fanon Mendes-France of France said in the report. “The colonial history, the legacy of enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism and racial inequality in the U.S. remains a serious challenge as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent.”
“Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror lynchings in the past,” she told reporters. “Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
For example, Mendes-France compared the recent deaths of unarmed black men like Michael Brown and Eric Garner at the hands of police to the lynchings of black men in the South from the post-Civil War days through the Civil Rights era. Those deaths, and others, have inspired protests around the country under the Black Lives Matter moniker.
“What stands out for me is the lack of acknowledgement of the slave trade,” said Ricardo A. Sunga III, who lives in the Philippines.
Some of the working group’s members, none of whom are from the United States, said they were shocked by some of the things they found and were told. For example, “it’s very easy in the United States for African-Americans to be imprisoned, and that was very concerning,” said Sabelo Gumedze of South Africa. Federal officials say 37 per cent of the state and federal prison populations were black males in 2014. The working group suggests the U.S. implement several reforms, including reducing the use of mandatory minimum laws, ending racial profiling, ending excessive bail and banning solitary confinement.
The working group suggests monuments, markers and memorials be erected in the United States to facilitate dialogue, and “past injustices and crimes against African-Americans need to be addressed
with reparatory justice,” The group will suggest several U.S. changes to improve human rights for African-Americans, which also include establishing a national human rights commission, ratifying international human rights treaties, asking Congress to study slavery and its aftereffects and considering reparations . The Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent was established in 2002 by the then-Commission on Human Rights, following the World Conference against Racism in 2001. It also visited the United States in 2010, where its final report found similar problems, including blacks facing disproportionately high unemployment, lower income levels, less access to education, “problematic access to quality health-care services and the high incidence of certain health conditions, electoral disenfranchisement and structural issues in the administration of justice (in particular incarceration rates).” The current panel will give its final findings to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva in September. By Jesse J. Holland THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Juno Awards replace nominee after realizing song was ineligible dian music, says it discovered that Kaytranada’s song “At All” was released outside the eligibility period following “an internal review.” The organization concluded the track would be taken out of the nominees and replaced by Borgeous & Lights’ song “Zero Gravity.”
TORONTO _ DJ and producer Kaytranada is fuming after Juno Awards organizers yanked his nomination on Friday once they realized his song was ineligible.
“Shoutout to the Canadian music scene for being so out of touch,” Kaytranada posted on his Twitter account shortly before the Junos issued an official announcement.
The Montreal-based performer took to Twitter to say he’s “lost respect” for the Junos after he was removed from the dance recording of the year category less than a week after he was nominated.
“Like forreal (sic) Canada, I want my recognition. You cant do me like that.” The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which organizes the annual Juno event to celebrate Cana-
“I’ve lot my respect to the Junos, cause they don’t know what they’re nominating,” Kaytranada added on Twitter. “They need more kids in their offices to take care of that.” This isn’t the first time in recent memory the Junos have had to fix an error after announcing nominees. In 2013, a nomination for Quebec singer Elisapie as breakthrough artist of the year was rescinded after organizers realized the Inuit
singer had already won a Juno eight years earlier as part of the duo Taima, which won aboriginal album of the year. Kaytranada’s case is a little more clear cut, and began with a mistake at U.S. label Ultra Music. “At All” briefly appeared for sale on iTunes in October 2013 for about three months before it was taken down, said Kaytranada’s manager, William Robillard Cole. The song was then re-released as part of a deal with Ultra in 2015. The New York-based label accidentally submitted the track as if it were brand new, which Juno organizers didn’t catch before it scored a nomination. Management for Kaytranada declined requests for a phone interview with him, but offered
their take on the situation: “Ultra submitted this song to the Juno’s without permission from Kaytranada, or myself,” said Cole in an emailed statement. “The Juno’s should have caught this issue before nominating him for this national award. We are disappointed, and I hope that they can correct their process so this doesn’t happen to any other young Canadian artists.” Nominees for the Juno Awards were announced on Tuesday. R&B singer the Weeknd led the pack with six nominations, while Justin Bieber and Drake each received five. The Juno Awards will air live from Calgary on CTV on April 3. The Canadian Press

Head of BAFTA: Film industry not diverse enough

JIMI HENDRIX
LONDON (AP) _ Jimi Hendrix's former girlfriend remembers the surreal moments when music fans would knock on their apartment door in London and want to talk about composer George Frideric Handel. Hendrix's former apartment has been restored to how it looked in the 1960s and will open to visitors tomorrow. The bedroom may look awfully tidy for a rock star, but Etchingham says Hendrix was a former U.S. Army soldier and always made his bed.

According to Stokes, young Mayhew has the talent to make an impact in the sport. “He's already done very well, he's very competitive,'' Stokes said. “I think he'll do very well here but at the end of the day this is just one step, it's not even the first step, it's the step before the first step.'' He's nevertheless a bright prospect
and Stokes sees him continuing to develop. “I see him going on to Beijing (for the 2022 Winter Olympics),'' Stokes said. For his part, Mayhew is starting to develop a sense of self-belief to the point that he now thinks of himself as a bobsledder. “I do but before I totally did not, not even imagine myself at the Olympics plus doing bobsled,'' he said. “Right now I'm really, really proud.'' As for the upcoming Games, Mayhew said he is managing to remain calm. It's typical of the sense of enjoyment Stokes says Jamaica brought to the sport when it first burst onto the scene. “Everybody was all tense and uptight and shouting and carrying on and we're like, 'guys relax','' he said The Associated Press

Three standout films for Black History Month
The weekly Next Big Thing column highlights what's bubbling under the surface in entertainment with a look at rising stars in the world of music, as well as standout TV shows, movies and web series that would be a shame to overlook. This week, we look at three standout films to mark Black History Month. INSPIRING TRACK COMEBACK Former Olympian Harry Jerome is often missed in the scope of Canadian sports history, but “Mighty Jerome'' hopes to draw new attention to his inspiring story.
The documentary follows the Vancouver-raised track and field star whose record-setting career in the early 1960s was stopped short by a crippling leg injury. Many thought he would never return to the sport, but Jerome launched a relentless and inspiring recovery effort.
“Mighty Jerome'' is available to rent on the National Film Board's website and to buy through digital retailers.
Director Charles Officer, who previously worked on “Nurse. Fighter. Boy,'' focuses on Jerome's determination and frames his story in the political context of the time. Since his death from a brain aneurysm in 1982, Jerome's story has
gained more attention in some sports circles. An annual track and field meet in Burnaby, B.C., was named after him and a statue of Jerome has been erected in Stanley Park.
FIGHTING FOR RIGHTS “Selma'' was one of the gems from last year's awards season and is a powerful retelling of a pivotal time in Martin Luther King Jr.'s life. Director Ava DuVernay frames the
story around King's campaign for equal voting rights and the marches he led from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965. Her perspective brings a unique sense of history and a powerful urgency to what was a turbulent time in U.S. history.
ing Jr. and Giovanni Ribisi. “Selma'' is available to stream on Netflix and on disc. RISING STARS If you're looking for a toe-tapping good time, “The Five Heartbeats'' will put you on the right track.
But it's the moving performance from David Oyelowo as King which grabbed the most attention last year _ partly because he was snubbed for an Oscar nomination.
The 1991 film _ directed by Robert Townsend and co-written by Keenen Ivory Wayans _ is a fictional take on a bygone era when soul music reigned supreme.
The film also includes supporting performances from a list of familiar faces, including Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Good-
At its centre is the three-decade story of the Five Heartbeats, an R&B vocal group created for the film but
loosely inspired by Motown singers of the 1960s like The Temptations and Four Tops. While the film stays within the genre conventions of a rise-to-fame story, it's the energetic musical numbers that give it an extra spark. “The Five Heartbeats'' also stars Townsend in a lead role and features comedian Eddie Griffin making his film debut in an uncredited cameo. The movie is available on DVD and streaming on Netflix. By David Friend THE CANADIAN PRESS

Rihanna hits the runway this time, as designer
NEW YORK _ Rihanna is certainly used to stopping the show, whether as a performer or as a fashion figure whose daring choices can make headlines. But at New York Fashion Week she let her models make the splashy entrances. After all, she was the designer this time. The singer presented her Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection, heavy on Japanese-inspired streetwear in almost exclusively black and white, with, she said, “a Gothic undertone.'' As befitting a collection for Puma, it of course featured sneakers, many with high stacked platforms. In an interview before the show, which was staged in a dark, mirrored, forest-like setting filled with stage smoke, Rihanna spoke about what motivates her to design. “I think design is a part of being creative,'' she told The Associated Press. “I enjoy creating and expressing the crazy things going on in my mind through something that people can see and that is tangible. That is the best part, being able to express yourself.

MR. VEGAS RELEASES EXCLUSIVE NEW CLOTHING LINE
“Fashion to me was just one of those things that came naturally,'' she said. “I enjoy discovering it _ all the different styles, finishes, fabrics, silhouettes. It's not easy, but it doesn't feel like work.'' Rihanna, who's been a frequent Fashion Week presence over the years at shows like Alexander Wang, said there had been “lots of great designers in the world that I've been inspired by.'' But she declined to name one in particular she'd like to emulate, saying she didn't want to reproduce someone else's work. At the show's end, before a crowd that included upcoming Oscar host Chris Rock, supermodel Naomi Campbell, singers Ne-Yo and Pete Wentz, designer Jeremy Scott, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Rihanna came out to take a bow, smiling in a grey-and-white patterned jacket with a huge hood. Earlier, on the red carpet, she had worn a black top with velvet on the outside and a jersey fabric on the inside. “I wanted to keep it sporty,'' she said. By Jocelyn Noveck THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
