SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico _ The president of the Dominican Republic has arrived in Puerto Rico to sign several economic deals with the U.S. territory. Danilo Medina is expected to meet with Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla on Tuesday as part of a one-day trip. The deals were finalized by a committee created nearly two years that sought to strengthen ties between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Garcia said he seeks to increase exports and imports well as help create more jobs.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent _ A small bus packed with secondary students on their way to class plunged off a seaside cliff Monday on the island of St. Vincent, killing at least five children. Authorities were searching for two others who were unaccounted for after the crash. The minibus was full, with about 19 people, including the driver, a conductor and another adult, at the time of the crash, Police Commissioner Michael Charles said. It struck a utility pole and went off the cliff, falling about 20 feet to the rocks on the northern Atlantic Ocean side of the small island.

Haiti president seeking last minute deal with opposition to end political showdown

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves called the crash a “tragedy of national proportions,'' and cancelled the annual budget speech he was scheduled to deliver Monday to Parliament. “It was a terrible accident and I think everyone's heart is really heavy because of what has taken place,'' Gonsalves said in a radio interview. Authorities did not identify the children, though their names were widely known on an island of only about 100,000 people. Dominican police, prosecutors arrested after 1 ton of cocaine disappears One of the three drug seizures occurred in September near Santo Domingo, where 950 kilograms (2,000 pounds) of cocaine were discovered but never turned over to authorities, he said.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti _ Haiti’s leader and opposition lawmakers are locked in negotiations, trying to forge a last-minute deal to resolve a standoff stalling elections in the troubled country. President Michel Martelly and opposition officials have been embroiled in a showdown over legislative elections due in 2011. On Sunday, they again met behind closed doors at a Port-au-Prince hotel trying to end the impasse a day before Parliament is dissolved. Martelly will rule by decree if they don’t resolve the political crisis by the end of Monday. He was supposed to call elections in 2011 for a majority of Senate seats, the entire Chamber of Deputies and local offices. But a group of opposition senators used parliamentary procedure to prevent a vote authorizing the elections. They accuse Martelly of trying to undermine the Constitution. Protesters have held sometimes-violent demonstrations in the capital, demanding that Martelly resign The Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ A court in the Dominican Republic has ordered the arrest of three prosecutors and 21 police officers accused of not reporting drug seizures involving more than a ton of cocaine that has since disappeared. Among those accused is the former director of an anti-narcotics unit, who is among the dozen of suspects that have been arrested. Authorities are still seeking to arrest the remainder. “In one way or another they became drug traffickers,'' said General Prosecutor Francisco Dominguez. “This type of situation is unacceptable.''

Dominguez said he believes some of the drugs were sold, adding that some suspects have turned over the cash from the alleged transactions. Authorities are still investigating whether some of the drugs were returned as part of a bribe. The investigation began in December after Police Chief Manuel Castro noticed the missing drugs. The arrests are the latest in an ongoing crackdown on corruption in the Caribbean country's police force. A 2011 Amnesty International report found that some 12,000 police officers were accused of corruption between 2007 and 2010. It is unclear how many of those cases were tied to drug trafficking. ATLANTA _ A judge in Atlanta is set to hear motions Tuesday in the legal dispute that pits Martin Luther King Jr.’s two sons against his daughter in a dispute over two of his most cherished items. King’s estate, which is controlled by his sons, has asked a judge to order their sister to turn over the civil rights icon’s travelling Bible and Nobel Peace Prize medal. In a board of directors meeting last year Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King voted 2-1 against Bernice King to sell the two artifacts. Bernice opposes the sale and says the items don’t belong to the estate. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney could resolve the ownership dispute at the hearing or he could allow it to proceed to a trial. By Kate Brumback THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Haiti protesters rally to demand president’s departure as political stalemate continues

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti _ Protesters burned tires and threw rocks at police during the latest anti-government demonstration in Haiti’s capital amid a bitter political stalemate over long-delayed elections. The gathering of mostly young men reached a peak of about 1,500 Saturday as protesters called for the departure of President Michel Martelly. Riot police fired tear gas and sprayed water from an armoured vehicle, dispersing the crowd near where the National Palace stood before it collapsed in Haiti’s 2010 earthquake. There has been no letup in violent protests since last month’s resignation of Martelly’s prime minister and other concessions aimed at resolving the stalemate holding up legislative elections. Haiti faces an uncertain political future in coming days with Senate seats expiring Monday. If a last-minute agreement isn’t reached, Martelly will soon rule by decree. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Haiti marks 5th anniversary of earthquake amid signs of uneven recovery ers before a large chunk of rubble set on a concrete pedestal. The site is being developed as a memorial for those who lost their lives. The government has said more than 300,000 people were killed but the exact toll is unknown because there was no systematic effort to count bodies amid the chaos and destruction. Carine Joiceus, a 24-year-old customs worker who attended the memorial Mass in Bel Air, had to have one of her arms amputated near the shoulder after she was pinned by falling rubble at a university. She has since had two children and says she has learned to live with her disability. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti _ On crowded streets where fragile concrete homes collapsed and anguished people searched through rubble for loved ones, Haitians paused to remember the devastating January 2010 earthquake that shattered much of the teeming capital and surrounding area. At 4:53 p.m., the time five years ago when the 7.0 magnitude quake heaved the ground and upended the lives of millions, many Port-au-Prince residents shared a quiet moment to remember the dead before taking comfort in routines of everyday life. “Five years ago, Haiti was in great pain. I pray for those who died and I thank you God for not taking the lives of my children,'' Edline Guervil said with her eyes shut tight during a family prayer at her laundry shop in a hard-hit neighbourhood where many of her neighbours died. Hundreds of people attended a Catholic Mass just after dawn at a new church built alongside the ruined National Cathedral, the towering remnants of broken walls still dominating the impoverished Bel Air neighbourhood in downtown Port-au-Prince. “This is the anniversary of the day I can never forget,'' Gladys Lambard, who lost her husband and sister

in the quake, said as she walked into the church arm-in-arm with her 14-year-old daughter. “The sadness of that day marked me forever.'' Yet, as the nation of 10 million marked the fifth anniversary of the quake, a political crisis between Haiti's president and parliament that has delayed legislative elections threatens to undermine the troubled country's political stability. President Michel Martelly and opposition lawmakers have been embroiled in a political showdown since 2011, when he was supposed to call a vote for a majority of Senate seats, the entire Chamber of Deputies and local offices. A group of opposition senators who accuse Martelly of trying to undermine the Constitution have blocked a vote that would lead to approval of an electoral law. Parliament's mandate comes to a close Monday and no law has been authorized to allow a vote. The president, who leaves office next year, could soon sign a decree allowing Haiti to hold legislative elections later this year. On Monday morning, he told The Associated Press that he was losing hope that lawmakers would pass a law in the hours before Parliament dissolves. “It's their responsibility to do it, it's

not mine. I just hope that they do it, but it's been there for so long that I think we have little chance,'' he told AP at a memorial service for earthquake victims at a mass burial site north of the capital. After days of negotiations with opposition figures, the president announced Sunday he had forged a last-minute accord with leaders of four opposition parties, leading to hopes an electoral law could soon be passed. But an emergency parliamentary session scheduled for Monday did not take place. At a memorial service on the national holiday, Martelly contrasted the solidarity Haitians displayed in the immediate aftermath of the quake with the messy political situation it is enduring now. Opposition protesters have repeatedly clashed with riot police in downtown Port-au-Prince as they press for the president's departure. “Enough is enough,'' Martelly said during his speech, addressing his words to opposition groups orchestrating the street protests. “Give the country a chance, in the name of the all the victims who died five years ago.'' Martelly spoke on the northern outskirts of Port-au-Prince, where he and the first lady placed white flow-

“I remember just crying the first year after it happened,'' Joiceus said. “But since then, I'm moving ahead with my life and thinking of the future. '' For the country as a whole, the recovery has been uneven. The United Nations says Haiti has received more than 80 per cent of about $12.45 billion pledged by more than 50 countries and multilateral agencies since the disaster, a combination of humanitarian assistance, recovery aid and disaster relief. Parts of the capital are awash in new construction and the number of people in dismal tent camps has dropped from around 1.5 million after the quake to around 80,000. But Haiti also remains a desperately poor country facing many of the same challenges as before the earthquake. The World Bank says more than 6 million out of roughly 10.4 million inhabitants live under the national poverty line of $2.44 per day. Macini Rises to the Top ini has worked with several producers such as, Category 5 Jamaica, Jerrymuzik, Frenz 4real production, Standfirm Records, Pureandnatural and most recently Agent Grungstar. To date, Macini has tended to record as a solo artist however he collaborated with Junior P on a great party song called, ‘‘Grey Goose Buss ina mi head’ produced by Category 5 Jamaica (2013,) and in February 2014 with a group of six artists known as Project XXX (Triple X) to record a video, ‘Lap Dance.’ One of the reasons Macini records successfully as a solo artist is his extraordinary ability to sound like two different artists- singer and rapper, often on the same track. This talent has fooled many people in the industry!

One of the most vocally talented artists you are likely to encounter today is Macini, born Kevin Edwards, the youngest of seven brothers who, like Joseph of the Old Testament, deserves a coat of many colours to match his style! Acquiring the name ‘Macini’ due to his impeccable collection of Italian wear, Macini is comfortable projecting his personal image in the streets of his home town Mandeville (Manchester, Jamaica) - and worldwide. Throughout Macini’s life music was featured heavily and was an important part of his childhood, growing up singing. Around the age of thirteen Macini became aware that he was talented and following traditional musical roots, began singing at his Revivalist church where he was able to express himself through Gospel music. Macini contributed to worship services by playing his guitar

and was then when he realised his ability to write songs. He recently putting together a catalogue of over 35 excellent songs. Naturally Macini was influenced by Jamaica’s best, and looks up to artists such as the late, great Sanchez, veteran Reggae artist Beres Hammond and contemporary Dancehall artist Bounty Killer. It was Macini’s love of Reggae music which led him to explore Dancehall, Reggae and Lover’s Rock, making these his own personal genres. In 2001 London became home to Macini and in 2010, his musical life started taking a serious turn when he emerged as a genuine contender in the dancehall arena; and became known as an artist with multiple talents. During the last few year Mac-

Macini will be releasing his first promotional EP this year under the direction of Badda Links, Grungstar Studio’s and Promotions. The following four songs will be featured: 1. ‘Dem don’t know di link’... Macini’s debut single released 2010, produced by Hipaside Records. A Dancehall song which speaks about keeping friendships. This song received extensive airplay both in Jamaica and on community internet stations that feature songs with an urban flavour in the UK. 2. ‘Hold mi Squeeze mi’ A Reggae song produced by Category 5 Jamaica, released with a video in March 2014. 3. ‘Bad mind people’ (Category 5 Jamaica, 2013.) This particular Reggae song captured Badda Link’s attention and inspired him to work with Macini. 4. ‘She tell mi dat she love mi;’ a popular Reggae song produced in 2013 by Jerrymuzik. Prior to the release of his debut EP, Macini has already been

interviewed on internet radio stations including Music Radiofm, VRL radio and, with his popularity growing, is being requested to appear at an increasing number of live shows including: Fire Friday’s (North London,) the Dandda promotional show with Fire Rankin (New port, Wales) and Reggae Showcase; hosted by award winning artist Savana. Cassandra London has invited Macini to sing at the renowned Hootananny, Brixton during her debut EP launch August 2014. Macini’s musical inspiration extends beyond the boundaries of traditional and modern Jamaican music. Aspiring to popular artists Shaggy and Sean Paul, Macini’s love of popular music is calling him towards the R&B market. Macini voices political ideals and creates songs based around the feelings we all relate to, specifically love, which he expresses through song. With such a wealth of talent and determination there is every reason to believe that Macini will attain the heights he is striving to achieve. Macini has a determined and straightforward attitude to life and music embraced in his own personal catchphrase, ‘DO IT ONE TIME.’ Macini believes in getting everything right first time and without doubt is set to make his mark in the commercial world. He was required to complete the community service before the end of January. Brown appeared in court Thursday with his mother and girlfriend. Rae Sremmurd has been one of many new acts to take the hip-hop world by storm in 2014, riding— as these acts often do—a wave of momentum due to a major single that often goes viral first before snagging all-important radio play.

DMX is about to release his seventh studio album called “Redemption of the Beast,”. On facebook he spoke about the album. “Swizz [Beatz] did the single. I got Sean Kingston on the Scott Storch record. Of course I got a little LOX on there. Drag, you know. Keep it family tight. It’s going be a few features, but nothing crazy. I got Tyrese on a couple of joints.” The album is scheduled for release on January 13th.

Game will commemorate a decade since The Documentary dropped by unleashing its follow-up on the same date. The Documentary 2, his 10th solo album, is slated for release Jan. 18, 2015, exactly 10 years after his debut. Ahead of The Documentary 2 was Year of the Wolf, Games’s new compilation featuring artists from his Blood Money record label. That album dropped in October. The Documentary 2 is Game’s first solo studio album since 2012’s Jesus Piece.

Tetsuo & Youth is the upcoming fifth studio album by American rapper Lupe Fiasco, set to be released on January 20, 2015, by Atlantic Records and 1st & 15th Entertainment. The album was promoted by the Tetsuo & Youth preview tour, which took place November 2, 2013 to December 15, 2013. Lupe’s label-mate Stalley was a supporting act on the tour, while The Boy Illinois took role as an opening act.

James has the NBA's most popular jersey again, and this time it's his old No. 23 NEW YORK _ LeBron James has taken the No. 23 back to the top. James again leads the NBA's most popular jersey list, this time in his original Cleveland Cavaliers uniform that he returned to this season. James tops the list released Monday for the fifth straight season, but it was the No. 6 of the Miami Heat the previous four. He switched back to his first number this summer when he went back to Cleveland, where he played until leaving in 2010.

It's the first time James' Cavaliers jersey topped the list since 2004, his rookie season, and the first time the Cavs have been No. 1 on the team merchandise list. Golden State's Stephen Curry jumped five spots to No. 2 on the list, which is based on overall sales from adidas and NBAStore.com from October-December, 2014. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, the Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Chicago's Derrick Rose rounded out the top five.

Kobe returns to Lakers' lineup after latest rest, but Scott unsure of future “I'm not going to anticipate anything,'' Scott said. “This is a day-by-day, game-by-game situation.'' Although Bryant is the NBA's sixth-leading scorer with 23.0 points per game, the accumulated wear of his 19th NBA season has prompted Scott to rest him with increasing frequency. Bryant has been surprised by the overall soreness in his body, gradually realizing the effects of the accumulated wear on a player who regularly suited up with innumerable injuries ranging from jammed fingers to sprained ankles. Scott thinks Bryant's famed toughness and his desire to wring more wins out of another bad season compromised his long-term plans for Bryant. Kobe is averaging 34.8 minutes per game, a number that's higher than Scott intended when the season began. LOS ANGELES _ Kobe Bryant returned to the Los Angeles Lakers' lineup against Miami on Tuesday night after his latest prolonged stretch of rest. The Lakers are working on a plan to keep their 36-year-old superstar healthy for the rest of a rough season, but they're not entirely sure how to do it. Scott intends to decide before every game whether to use Bryant that night, but Kobe likely won't play in back-to-back

games again this season. “It's uncharted waters for both of us,'' Scott said. Bryant had skipped three of the Lakers' last four games to rest, and he missed three games last month, sitting out six of the Lakers' last 11 games overall. Scott plans to rest Bryant again Friday when the Lakers visit Utah, but hopes Bryant will play against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday _ all subject to change, of course.

“I was maybe playing him a little too much,'' Scott said. Bryant is in the first year of a two-year, $48.5 million contract extension signed last season while he was injured. Bryant played just six games in the previous 18 months before this season began after struggling with two major leg injuries. “It's a two-year deal, and we want to make sure he can play it out to the best of his ability and to the highest ideal,'' Scott said. Scott claims the Lakers haven't discussed shutting down Bryant for the season, but the coach

acknowledged during the pregame shoot-around that such a discussion might occur in the future. For now, Scott will stick to a strict limit of 32 minutes for Bryant. But what if a game goes to overtime? “He won't play overtime,'' Scott said. Bryant is the third-leading scorer in NBA history, a fivetime champion and by far the Lakers' biggest draw. Fans spend thousands of dollars on tickets with the express interest in seeing Bryant before his career ends _ and while Scott is aware of his responsibility to fans, he feels a bigger responsibility to Bryant, his former teammate during Kobe's rookie season. “It's been a great experience to know him a little more,'' Scott said. “I'm getting to know him on a different level. That's been the fun part. The toughest part of coaching him at this point in his career, you wish you had him six or seven years earlier, when this wasn't an issue.'' '50 Cent' Jackson bothered by similarities in promoting Fox's 'Empire' and his Starz series

PASADENA, Calif. _ Curtis “50 Cent'' Jackson isn't happy with the makers of Fox's new drama about the music industry, “Empire.'' The rap artist and actor has gone online to grouse about how promotions for “Empire'' were similar to those for “Power,'' the Starz network action series that is about to begin its second season. Jackson is an ex-

ecutive producer who also acts in the series, and he'll be appearing more frequently in the second season.

After Jackson used his social media account to point out the similarities recently, Henson responded on “They didn't have to do Twitter: “I pay attenthat,'' Jackson said. tion to $, not cents,'' adding a peace sign emoji. Both programs have primarily African-American casts. But they're thematically different; the connection to the music business is much more a part of the Fox series.
