The Caribbean Delta Air Lines evacuates plane, aborts takeoff after faulty report of fire in cargo area

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ A Delta Air Lines plane aborted takeoff Monday in Jamaica after a fire was reported in its cargo area, forcing 160 people and six crew members to evacuate the commercial jetliner which was scheduled to fly from Montego Bay to Atlanta. Nobody was injured in the afternoon incident at Sangster International Airport in the northern tourist city of Montego Bay. A Delta spokeswoman said the flight-deck warning was not accurate and there was no fire. Photos posted on the Jamaica Gleaner’s website show passengers using emergency chutes on the Boeing 737 to get off the aircraft and onto the runway. The Jamaican airport was forced to close after the incident and all flights were rerouted to the island’s capital of Kingston. The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority said all efforts were made to reopen the runway to minimize disruptions. Investigators have started looking into what caused the fire warning indication from the plane’s cargo bay.

The World South African students stage nationwide protests during campaign against tuition fee hikes

JOHANNESBURG _ South African media say police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse a group of university students protesting planned increases in tuition fees. News channel eNCA posted video on its website showing police clearing a road that was blocked by students Wednesday at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in the South African city of Port Elizabeth. Hundreds of students also demonstrated peacefully against planned tuition hikes outside parliament in Cape Town on Wednesday. Empowering the world one book at a time

The world around us is constantly changing. At times it’s a form of realization that most don’t want to really acknowledge. With constant violence plaguing the world especially within minority communities; one may ask who is going to be the next Rev Martin Luther King Jr, who is going to be the next Malcolm X or perhaps Stokely Carmichael, also known as Kwame Touré. I’m personally not a fan of today’s empowerment culture due to the fact numerous people claim to walk the walk but refuse to talk to the talk. However, when I see a young vibrant Black Man making strides towards as they say in the millennial culture to” change the game” I have to salute him and listen keenly to his story. Joel NR Powell is his name and he’s a modern day revolutionist who believes firmly that he can empower

his generation to the highest level possible. If you doubt him he has proof to back himself up. He has created the best selling book “Black Empowerment & Minority Issues”, the documentary film “Empowerment through awareness” and the music soundtrack “7 Issues”. Not bad for a man who funded the entire idea himself. The completed project respectively called the Empowerment Series has been harvesting global attention before its release. What caught my eye with this young man was he has a photo on facebook with himself and former Prime Minister of Jamaica the Right Honourable P.J Patterson actually holding up a copy of his book at a recent event. When asked what was it like to meet such a great figure Mr. Powell stated “I was more than humble to grace his presence, I give thanks for his support”. Joel NR Powell is going to be a force to be reckoned with because I can clearly see that the proof is in the pudding. His aura and determination is distinct it’s just a matter of time before we as a people have to give this young man his genuine respect.

documentary series 'Belief' NEW YORK (AP) _ Oprah Winfrey is hoping people will find common ground, no matter what or who they believe in, with her new documentary series ``Belief,'' about how religion is viewed across the globe. “We live in a world where when your belief isn't the same, you literally can get your head chopped off,'' she said at the series' premiere Wednesday in New York. “What I know in my maturity is that the real purpose of being human beings on the planet, we are all different in search of the same thing,'' Winfrey said. “We're all yearning for the same thing but we have different ways and different approaches to doing that. That's what being a human being is.'' “Belief'' premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT on Winfrey's network OWN. It took three years to produce as filmmakers trekked to various countries to capture people with varying perspectives and experiences with religion and spirituality. “It's like a big ole community gathering around the world in a way that people just don't do on television, so I'm pleased that I was able to get it done,'' Winfrey said. The event was attended by many of Winfrey's supporters and collaborators such as director Ava DuVernay, actor and recording artist Common and “CBS This Morning'' co-host and Winfrey's long-time friend, Gayle King. “This is a landmark series. It did for me what happened for me the first time I watched 'Roots,'' said DuVernay. “It changed what I thought my position was in the world. ... Jamaica's Marlon James wins Booker Prize for Marley inspired 'Brief History of Seven Killings'

James, 44, was awarded the 50,000 pound ($77,000) prize during a black-tie dinner at London's medieval Guildhall. “A Brief History of Seven Killings” is the third novel from the writer, who now lives in Minneapolis.

The book charts political violence in Jamaica and the spread of crack cocaine in the U.S., and hinges on a 1976 attempt on the life of reggae superstar Marley _ identified in the book only as “The Singer.” The story is told in a cacophony of voices _ from gangsters to ghosts, drug dealers to CIA agents _ and in dialects ranging from American English to Jamaican patois. Critics have compared it to the stream-of-consciousness novels of William Faulkner and the hyper-violent movies of Quentin Tarantino, while James himself has cited Charles Dickens as an influence on his multi-character depiction of society.

James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson make the 'The Gin Game' an honour to watch

Another is the two-person cast, James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson _ actors still performing at the highest level despite their combined age of 174. You might wonder if there's something supernatural at work there, too. The handsome and beautifully acted revival of D.L. Coburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play opened Thursday at the John Golden Theatre, the same venue where it made its Broadway debut in 1977. The play about two lonely, alienated nursing home residents is directed by Leonard Foglia, who has put an emphasis on the play's humour. That makes for an enjoyable evening but also makes the come-out-of-nowhere ending a gut-wrencher. Jones, 84, as Weller Martin and Tyson, 90, as Fonsia Dorsey are two still relatively spry elders who find themselves in “a warehouse for the intellectually and emotionally dead.'' They strike up a tentative friendship over a series of gin rummy games.

But he said the novel's verve and humour would win over readers.

The irascible Weller, long divorced and distanced from his exwife and children, was a businessman, done in by his partners. Fonsia, also divorced, is filled with bitterness toward her ex-husband and excuses for her son, who she says lives far away and can't come to visit her.

The Booker guarantees a big boost in sales for the winner, and can transform writers' careers. When Hilary Mantel won for Tudor saga “Wolf Hall” in 2009, she went from being a modestly successful novelist to a literary superstar. The Associated Press

NEW YORK _ One thing you should probably not bet against at “The Gin Game'' on Broadway is the little old lady onstage who seems to have supernatural luck with cards.

Wood acknowledged that the book's plentiful sex, violence and swearing might put off buyers who “like to give the Booker winners to their mother to read.”

Wood said although much of the subject matter is grim, “a lot of it is very, very funny.”

LOS ANGELES _ Chris Rock is coming back to host the Oscars for a second time. The show’s producers say the prolific comedian-filmmaker will be at the helm for the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin called Rock “the MVP of the entertainment industry.’’ The 50-year-old entertainer, who hosted the 77th Oscars in 2005, posted a photo of himself with an Oscar statuette on Twitter Wednesday with the caption, “Look who’s back.’’ Rock is the only non-white Oscar host to helm the show in the past 10 years. The film academy has visibly increased its diversity outreach efforts since it was derided earlier this year for its all-white slate of acting nominees. Rock has won four Emmy Awards for his comedy series and specials. He recently directed the comedy special “Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo’’ for HBO. In 2014, he wrote, directed and starred in the feature “Top Five,’’ and in 2009, he produced, wrote and starred in the documentary “Good Hair.’’ Rock created and produced the TV series “Everybody Hates Chris,’’ which aired from 2005 to 2009. Other acting credits include the “The Longest Yard,’’ ‘’Lethal Weapon 4” and the ‘’Madagascar” animated movies. He also appeared on Broadway in 2011. He was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live’’ from 1990 to 1993. The Associated Press

Spokeswoman for Lamar Odom's aunt says he woke up, spoke 3 days after he was found unconscious LAS VEGAS _ A family representative said Lamar Odom has regained consciousness, and was speaking and even offered a thumbs-up from his hospital bed, just days after being found in extremely critical condition at a Nevada brothel. Alvina Alston, publicist for JaNean Mercer, Odom's maternal aunt and godmother, said that Odom spoke a greeting and gave a thumbs-up Friday morning, his first communication since being hospitalized in Las Vegas Tuesday. A person who is close to estranged wife Khloe Kardashian, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to release details of Odom's condition to the press, also said that he was able to say hi to Kardashian. It serves as the first significant update on Odom's health since he was found unconscious and facedown at the Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada, Tuesday afternoon. Authorities are still retracing Odom's $75,000, three-day visit to the brothel that started late afternoon Saturday, with blood test results to determine what caused his medical episode still pending.

The brothel's owner and spokesman have said that he chose two women to accompany him in a VIP suite on his first visit to the ranch. Odom had said that he had done cocaine before his arrival, and the brothel said they saw him drink alcohol and take as many as 10 supplements sold as ``herbal Viagra.'' One brand that he took, Reload, was the subject of a 2013 warning from the Food and Drug Administration, which said the pill contained sildenafil, the active ingredient in prescription Viagra. The brothel also said he became upset Sunday following a phone call where his ex's ``Keeping Up with the Kardashians'' show was mentioned. But he was generally in a good mood, even suggesting that he stay an entire week at the brothel in the rural community. Odom was then found unconscious there Tuesday with white and reddish substances coming from his nose and mouth. He was breathing and

taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas. Kardashian rushed to his side that night and since then, friends, teammates and loved ones have visited and posted messages on social media asking for prayers. On Wednesday at the hospital, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Odom was on life support. Friday's latest update on Odom's health condition comes as Mercer and Kardashian just hours earlier started speaking out to thank fans. Kardashian had said her family won't be posting content on their apps while attending to his health crisis. The online message read: “As a family, we've decided to hold off on publishing content across our apps while we continue to support and pray for Lamar.'' She also thanked fans for their kindness and understanding. The message was addressed to fans as a note from Kardashian on her blog-like app. Announcing a posting black-out is a rarity for the family, who meticulously document

their lives on various social media channels and on the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians'' television show. Meanwhile, Mercer had issued her own statement Friday to thank the public for its support, saying they're family was focused on Odom's ``complete healing.'' “No words can express the overwhelming gratitude we feel for the outpouring of support from around the world,'' the statement issued Friday said. Alston said Mercer is the sister of Odom's late mother who helped raise him in New York, where she still lives. Mercer and other family members are now in Las Vegas. The statement said: “His complete healing is paramount and our primary focus.'' The former NBA star had been a beloved member of the Los Angeles Lakers, winning two championships with the team and enjoying widespread fame as a reality TV star himself before his recent downward spiral, which included leaving pro basketball, a pending divorce with Kardashian and a DUI arrest. WNBA leads sports leagues for diverse hiring practices regarding race and gender

ORLANDO, Fla. _ The WNBA has maintained its standings among professional sports leagues as the leader in racial and gender hiring. According to an annual report released Tuesday by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, the

league received A-plus grades in race and gender hiring. It marks the 11th consecutive year the WNBA has received at least A grades in each category.

the 2015 season, there were six women and three African-American general managers, compared to four and three, respectively, last year.

Reports are also issued on the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS and college sports.

Report author Richard Lapchick said progress in diversifying ownership of teams is a welcomed sign.

Fourteen women and seven people of colour had WNBA ownership positions in 2015, an increase of two women and one person of colour from 2013. For

``It's the one area where there has not been great progress, so any positive motion will be a good signal to other leagues,'' he

said. ``The WNBA is doing that and the NBA is the only league with two (majority) owners of colour. It's not a big number, but it's two more than where we were five years ago.'' Lapchick also applauded the league's ongoing place as the industry's “standard setter'' for diversity efforts, noting the importance of the June hiring of Oris Stuart as the chief diversity and inclusion officer. In the new position, Stuart

oversees strategies for the WNBA, NBA and NBA Development League. ``I think business is recognizing that diversity and inclusion is an important business imperative,'' Lapchick said. “The league once again is setting a precedent by doing things before other people are doing them. That has been the mode of operation for the NBA and is the model for other leagues as well.'' The Canadian Press

Canada's world sprint bronze medallist De Grasse has decided to turn pro TORONTO _ Canadian sprint phenom Andre de Grasse is turning pro. A source says the 20-year-old from Markham, Ont., will remain in school at the University of Southern California, but will forgo his senior NCAA season of eligibility.

De Grasse is coming off a spectacular season that saw him win gold in both the 100 and 200 metres at the NCAA championships and the Pan American Games in Toronto. He tied for bronze behind Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt and American

Justin Gatlin at the world track and field championships in August. De Grasse was offered a seven-figure shoe deal after his NCAA performances but the sprinter announced shortly after his world bronze that he would complete his

senior season with the USC Trojans. He is currently in final negotiations with a shoe company, according to the source. The Canadian Press

Misty Copeland, already a crossover star and documentary subject, says she's just beginning NEW YORK _ Misty Copeland has already achieved a crossover pop culture fame that few dancers could ever hope to have. She's a bestselling author, a celebrity spokesperson, and a role model. In just the last five months, she's appeared in a Broadway show, presented at the Tonys, danced on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,'' and attended a White House state dinner. And now she's in the movies _ the subject of ``A Ballerina's Tale,'' a new documentary by Nelson George. LONDON _ The president of Hollywood's movie academy says criticism of the lack of diversity among Oscar nominees has helped spark a vital global discussion about how to make the entertainment industry more inclusive. Cheryl Boone Isaacs said “the whole discussion about diversity is a great discussion, because now it's at the top of everybody's mind, not just the academy's.'' “It is now a global discussion, and that's really important,'' she said during a reception at the U.S. ambassador's London residence for new European members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Wednesday's event _ whose guests included actors Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, directors Ridley Scott and Tom Hooper and former ``Dynasty'' star Joan Collins _ was part of a push to boost the international profile and reach of the organization, best known for handing out the Oscars. An all-white roster of acting nominees at the 2015 Academy Awards inspired the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite on social media and increased scrutiny of the lack of diversity in the ranks of the organization, whose 7,000 members are largely white and male. In June the academy announced 322 new members, including actors Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo, musicians Common and John Legend and actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Boone Isaacs, the first African-American woman to head the academy, called it a more diverse and inclusive list than ever before. Academy chief executive Dawn Hudson said Wednesday that the

invitation-only academy was urging all its branches to look more widely for potential new members. U.S. ambassador Matthew Barzun praised trans-Atlantic co-operation at the reception, where guests were served canapes, champagne and bourbon-based Cary Grant cocktails amid the chandeliers and ornate Chinese wallpaper of the residence's Garden Room. The cocktail choice was apt. Barzun recounted how British-born Hollywood star Grant persuaded his wife, Woolworths heiress Barbara Hutton, to sell her London home to the U.S. government for $1 after World War II. Winfield House, set amid 12 acres (5 hectares) of grounds in Regent's Park, has been the American ambassador's residence since the 1950s. The academy's forays beyond Los Angeles and New York _ with the London reception and a Paris gathering later this week _ reflect an increasingly globalized movie industry. Hudson said 40 per cent of nominees for the most recent Oscars were from Europe _ half of those from Britain. British “Star Trek'' and “X-Men'' star Patrick Stewart said there remains a lack of roles for older women and black actors, and a “shocking underuse of women directors.'' But he said he was struck by how international the movie business had become. “I wrapped a movie four days ago in New York and of the four leading actors, two were American, two were English,'' he told the AP. “But we also had a Brazilian actress, a Portuguese actress, a Canadian and a Spanish female director of photography, which was marvelous.''___

And yet, Copeland on Wednesday begins just her first season as a principal ballerina with American Ballet Theatre. “I do feel that my career really is just now beginning,'' she says, laughing at how incongruous that sounds. The offers and opportunities keep coming _ but no matter the distractions, one thing comes first, she says. “I've never sacrificed a ballet class, I've never sacrificed a rehearsal, and that will NEVER happen,'' Copeland said in an interview last week, scheduled on a Monday because that's the only day she can ever take off from her ABT duties. “It's not a hard balance. The dance is always first.'' It's been less than four months since Copeland, now 33, made dance history by becoming the first female African-American principal dancer in ABT's 75-year history. That came just days after her widely covered New York debut in the ultimate ballerina role, Odette/Odile in “Swan Lake.'' It's a famously demanding role for any ballerina, but for Copeland, it was that much tougher because the world was watching. From a purely dance perspective, it's clear she wishes she'd had a little time to quietly grow into the role. “I clearly am in a different position when I make these debuts and all the critics are coming,'' she says, somewhat wistfully. “That doesn't happen to most dancers on their debuts, that they're being critiqued like that. It's a very interesting position to be in.'' There was another challenge, too, one that hardly anyone watching that historic performance was aware of. Copeland was still feeling the effects of surgery she had in 2012 to repair six stress fractures in her left tibia. It was a career-threatening injury; she's

says she wondered at the time. “They don't know that I've gone through this surgery, and this may be the first time and the last time they will see me perform.''

still not 100 per cent. “It's been three years and I'm still not jumping fully,'' Copeland says. ``I mean, 32 fouettes (whipping turns) in 'Swan Lake' are on my surgery leg, and still today it's a struggle. It's so painful.'' But there's a reason the public didn't know about her injury, Copeland says: “We're not MEANT to expose those things. We're on stage presenting this beautiful, effortless experience for the audience.'' George met Copeland at her 2012 debut in “Firebird,'' a huge leap in her career at the time. Backstage afterward, though, Copeland confessed she was in terrible pain, and she had to pull out of later performances. Once she'd had her surgery, George suggested a film that would chronicle her struggle. “I saw it as this unique window into an artist's life,'' George says, ``when they're coming from a period of great heights, to go down and pick themselves back up.'' They began shooting as Copeland attended one of her first post-surgery ballet classes, clearly nervous and unsteady. The film also includes footage of Copeland's first post-surgery guest performance, with a small company in Brooklyn. She performed the “Dying Swan'' solo, and she's the first to say she wasn't at her best. “It's so hard to watch!'' Copeland says now. “But it was just something I had to do, for my own sanity and confidence. Nelson captured these moments where I knew I wasn't going to be happy with ... and I wasn't.'' An obvious perfectionist, Copeland also worried about the deal the audience was getting. “Why am I putting people through this?'' she

The film, which opened in New York last week and goes into wider release on Oct. 23, also touches, not surprisingly, on the obstacles _ including loneliness and self-doubt _ that Copeland experienced as she rose through the ranks in the heavily white environment of classical dance. She comments early in the film that some people think she focuses too much on her race _ on the fact that she is not just a ballerina, but a black ballerina. “It's true,'' she says now. “It's brought up to me all the time that I focus too much on that, that art isn't about that, and you don't see colour in art. But so much of the accomplishment that I have is that I'm a black ballerina. It wouldn't BE the accomplishment that it is if I were just another girl who happened to have bigger breasts and was made a principal dancer! It's the fact that I am an African-American woman that makes it a feat.'' Though Copeland is undeniably thrilled to be a principal dancer, there is, she notes, a down side: You dance less, because there are many principals vying for the few starring roles. “It's kind of a scary thought: in the rest of my career, if that's 10 years, I may have 20 'Swan Lakes' and that's it,'' she says. For now, Copeland needs to dance as much as she can, and fit in the rest when possible. Her two-week Broadway run with “On the Town'' evoked misery at first _ she felt unprepared _ and then great enjoyment. George predicts she'll be back on Broadway soon. Copeland says no, she's only thinking about ballet _ where you can't cut corners, no matter you who are. “There's no, like, I'm gonna go off and be this celebrity and then I'll come in and do this performance,'' she notes. “It just doesn't work that way. And the company, they could care less if Jay Z wants me to come and perform at his concert! Their focus is putting on the best performers and performances they can.''

Fashion museum opens in Atlanta with tribute to Oscar de la Renta's work and inspiration

ATLANTA _ A new museum focusing on international fashion has opened in Atlanta.

The first exhibition at SCAD FASH features more than 80 Oscar de la Renta designs and opened to the public this month on the Atlanta campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design. The pieces come from the school's permanent collection and donations from collectors and celebrities who worked with de la Renta before his death in 2014. De la Renta was a frequent donor to SCAD's collections and the natural choice for the opening, said Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of museums and exhibitions and curator of the showing. She hopes visitors whether casual observer or devoted student will learn something about design.
