The Caribbean Insel Air jet en route to Miami makes emergency landing in Dominican Republic

Helen Burns Jackson, mother of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, dies at 92 in South Carolina

The World Maya Angelou’s art collection is headed to NY auction; it includes quilt commissioned by Oprah

He says she was a big inspiration for much of his community activism.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ An Insel Air flight en route to Miami was forced to make an emergency landing Wednesday in the Dominican Republic when a warning light indicated a problem with one of the jet’s engines. The MD-82 had taken off from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao with approximately 55 passengers when the pilots noted the engine warning and landed the flight at Las Americas Airport in Santo Domingo, where emergency crews met the plane. Airline maintenance officials determined it had been a false warning light and that there had been no engine problem, said Edward Heerenveen, a spokesman for Insel Air. A replacement MD-82 was sent to the Dominican Republic to take the passengers on the rest of their journey to Miami and the first plane was taken out of service, which is required whenever there is a warning light, Heerenveen said.

GREENVILLE, S.C. _ Helen Burns Jackson, the mother of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, has died. She was 92. The Rev. Jesse Jackson told The Associated Press his mother died Monday morning in her longtime hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. He says she had been in failing health for some time.

Jackson says his mother had two scholarships to attend college, but when she became pregnant with him, she chose not to go. She later became a cosmetologist. Burns Jackson saw her son rise to fame as an activist and twotime presidential candidate. Another son, Chuck Jackson, is a singer and songwriter. The Associated Press (AP Photo/Barry Thumma, file)

Jackson described his mother as a talented musician and an active member of her church and community.

Among the highlights of the Sept. 15 Swann Galleries sale is a painted story quilt that hung in Angelou’s Harlem home. It’s a work by African-American artist Faith Ringgold titled “Maya’s Quilt of Life.’’ It was commissioned by Oprah Winfrey for Angelou’s 69th birthday in 1989. It depicts Angelou surrounded by flowers and excerpts from some of her writings. It’s an acrylic on canvas with pieced fabric border that’s expected to bring $150,000 to $250,000. The nearly 50 works are being offered for sale by Angelou’s estate. They’re expected to fetch $400,000 to $640,000. Angelou died last year at age 86. By Ula Ilnytzky THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Bahamas authorities detain 5 Americans for illegal fishing

NEW YORK _ The art collection of celebrated writer and civil rights activist Maya Angelou is heading to a New York City auction this month.

Bahamas unveils national park to protect endangered Atlantic Coast birds

Filmmaker Tyler Perry donates $200,000 to build home for Tanzania children with albinism

The National Audubon Society said Tuesday it worked on the park's proposal along with the Bahamas National Trust.

NASSAU, Bahamas _ Authorities in the Bahamas have detained five Americans for fishing without permits in the archipelago’s waters. The Royal Bahamas Defence Force said in a statement released Sunday that the Americans were detained on Saturday afternoon near Great Isaac Cay, which is located between the islands of Bimini and Grand Bahama, about 90 kilometres (55 miles) east of the Florida coast. The statement says the men were travelling in a 38-foot (13-meter) boat and carried fishing and diving equipment. They had no fishing permits and had not cleared Bahamas customs or immigration. The Americans were turned over to Bahamas customs, immigration and police authorities. Their names and hometowns were not released.

NASSAU, Bahamas _ The Bahamas has unveiled a new national park to help protect the winter homes of endangered Atlantic Coast shorebirds. The Joulter Cays National Park covers nearly 114,000 acres (46,140 hectares) of uninhabited islands and sand flats northwest of Nassau. The designation will prohibit sand mining and recreational and commercial uses of that area.

The Joulter Cays are a popular winter destination for 13 bird species including piping plovers and red knots.

ATLANTA _ Filmmaker Tyler Perry has donated $200,000 to help build a home for a group of Tanzanian children with albinism who were mutilated for their body parts.

More than 50 per cent of bird species in the Bahamas migrate from the U.S. and Canada.

Perry representative Keleigh Thomas Morgan said Monday the filmmaker helped build a four-bedroom house in New Jersey. The children will stay there while they receive medical treatment in the United States.

The national park is one of several new ones created as the Bahamas aims to protect 6.18 million acres (2.5 million hectares) of land.

Perry donated after watching a special featuring Elissa Montanti, a Staten Island woman who runs the non-profit Global Medical Relief Fund for children affected by war and natural disasters.

The Associated Press

Montanti recently brought a group of children with albinism to the U.S. from Tanzania. The children were dismembered in attacks. Their body parts were sold in the belief that children with the disease have special powers to bring wealth and good luck The Associated Press

New York's West Indian Day Parade marred once again by violence that leaves Cuomo aide hurt routine. Last year, a recent parolee opened fire into a crowd of revelers, killing one man and wounding several others. And in 2013, a 1-year-old boy sitting in his stroller was killed by a bullet meant for his father.

NEW YORK _ The West Indian Day Parade, a rollicking, colorful celebration of Caribbean culture, music, style and food, rolled through New York City's streets Monday but, once again, was marred by predawn violence that left one man dead and an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in critical condition. Cuomo identified his wounded staffer as Carey Gabay, a first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corporation. Gabay was walking with his brother near the Brooklyn parade route at 3:40 a.m. when he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs, according to police officials. A bullet struck Gabay, 43, in the head. Cuomo said Gabay is a Harvard-educated lawyer who had worked as an

assistant counsel to the governor. “I'm the governor of the state of New York, and there's not a thing I can do,'' Cuomo told reporters after he visited his staffer's family at Kings County Hospital. “There's not a thing I can say, and there's nothing I can do. And sometimes it just hurts.'' No arrests have made been, police said. The shooting was one of several outbursts of violence in the neighbourhoods surrounding the parade, which included the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man at 2 a.m. near Grand Army Plaza. Bloodshed before or after the West Indian Day celebration has become a sadly familiar part of the parade

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton dismissed talk of scuttling the preparade festivities _ which centre on a surreal midnight march known as J'Ouvert _ and said the New York Police Department was working with local leaders to make the event safer. There was a heavy police presence along the route, and several NYPD helicopters hovered overhead.

official preparade breakfast were the first public events since July in which Cuomo and de Blasio, who are locked in a simmering dispute, were both supposed to attend. But their paths never crossed. Cuomo left the breakfast about 10 minutes before de Blasio arrived, and the two men, both Democrats, marched separately. At the breakfast, Cuomo was asked if he planned to speak to the mayor. The governor responded by asking, “Is he here?'' and when told no, Cuomo glared and bluntly said, ``There's your answer.''

The parade went on as scheduled and drew hundreds of thousands of people to the stretch along Eastern Parkway. Throbbing basslines pulsated along the route, propelling outlandishly clad revelers to dance and those along the sidelines to bob their heads as they ate indigenous foods.

Hours after the parade, Cuomo and several other elected officials were planning to fly to Puerto Rico to offer advice to the island government grappling with a debt crisis. De Blasio was not invited.

Politicians dotted the route, with de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, who is of Caribbean descent, drawing cheers as they waved flags and periodically dashed to the sidelines to shake hands and pose for selfies.

This story has been corrected to show that Carey Gabay's wife was not pregnant with the couple's first child. A spokeswoman for the governor's office said Gov. Andrew Cuomo misspoke

But the parade was also the latest venue for New York's most high-profile political feud. The march and an

Trinidad prime minister in re election fight amid fears over crime, allegations of corruption better policing and a zero-tolerance approach. ``Now is not the time to experiment with any inexperienced party,'' she said at a recent rally. ``You need to give us another five years to finish our work.'' The prime minister has promised a new highway, a children's hospital, free laptops for primary school students and grants to single mothers.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad _ The first female prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago faces a tough fight for re-election Monday amid complaints about corruption and violent crime in the twin-island Caribbean nation. Polls show a close race for control of Parliament between the coalition led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the party of opposition leader Keith Rowley. The two rivals have a similar ideology and their support is divided largely along ethnic lines. Each claims he or she will do a better job of tackling violent crime and managing the country's natural gas and oil resources

amid falling prices. The two also have traded accusations of corruption, some lobbied by ousted former world soccer oďŹƒcial Jack Warner, who is seeking to recapture a seat in Parliament while fighting extradition to the U.S. on corruption charges. Five parties and several independents are contesting the 41 seats in the Parliament. Persad-Bissessar, 63, took oďŹƒce in May 2010 at the head of the four-party People's Partnership coalition. She has called crime the No. 1 problem in the country and proposes

The United National Congress, the largest contingent in the prime minister's coalition, has its base of support with people of East Indian descent who make up about 35 per cent of the population of 1.2 million. Opposition leader Keith Rowley, leader of the People's National Movement, has his base among people of African descent, who also make up about 35 per cent. Some of his supporters accuse the ruling party of taking ethnic politics too far. ``I am against this government because of its ethnic agenda in promoting its Indo supporters, giving them the major jobs in the public service over Afro-Trinis,'' said Karen Bart Alexander, a social development planner.

Persad-Bissessar has included oďŹƒcials of African descent in her Cabinet, including Warner, who was national security minister until April 2013. He resigned after an ethics panel of the regional COCACAF soccer federation released a report accusing him of enriching himself through fraud during his tenure with the organization. He was one of 14 people indicted in the U.S. on corruption charges involving international soccer's governing body FIFA and has been battling extradition. Polls suggest he is unlikely to regain the seat he lost when his term expired in June. The People's National Movement led the country to independence in 1962 and held power for most of the next half century. It has accused the government of mismanaging the oil-based economy, which has averaged annual growth of only half a per cent over the past five years. Rowley said the economy needs to be diversified to lessen the island's dependence on its energy sector. By Tony Fraser THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Jah9 heats up Steamaz with ‘The Marijuana’

Sophisticated roots artiste Jah9 has added another prolific project to her growing catalog of thought provoking material. The single ‘The Marijuana’, recorded on the growingly popular Steamaz Riddim by Production label Biggy Music, is the latest track to be released from the project. This is the first time the artiste is recording with Biggy Music since embarking on a professional music career in 2008. Earlier this year Biggy Music released Jesse Royal’s ‘Finally’ and Deep Jahi’s ‘Till a Morning’ also on the Steamaz Riddim project. The singles have been performing exceptionally well and have started charting locally and overseas. Jah9 believes the entire Steamaz project was fitting for her current artistic direction and also wanted to share potentially lifesaving information to the masses. “I am currently working on other projects to do with the use of ganja for health and sustainable develop-

ment, so recording 'The Marijuana’ was ideal at this time. Also, I love to steam; I’ve been steaming herb exclusively for well over a decade.” Jah9 Shared The song highlights the uses of the Marijuana including cancer treatment and speaks about the Rastafarian contribution to the economic advancement of the Weed industry. The artiste wants listeners to not only be entertained by ‘The Marijuana’ single but also be informed, empowered and inspired by its content. Jah9 is also focusing on a few more strategic singles, touring and a few community development projects, before releasing a full length Album project in early 2016. The artiste will also be embarking on the ‘Harvest Moon Tour'; a short tour of ganja-legal states Colorado and South California at the end of September. Hi Tunes Young Thug It is close to impossible to read Young Thug’s mind. Not only his lyrics rarely make much sense, but his current release strategy is the most offbeat scenario we have ever seen. Let us explain. His latest project, Barter 6, originally titled Carter 6, was originally set to serve as Thugga’s debut album. So far, so good. Then the rapper started promoting it as a mixtape, until he dropped it one day in advance via iTunes. Since this was his first “free” project to land on Apple’s store, his fans suggested he reversed his plan and dropped it as a digital LP. Now, the ATLien announced this was not a full-length record at all, yet a priced mixtape, and his debut studio album is due later this year. Young Thug’s first official LP will be titled Hy!£UN35, which stands for HiTunes.According to Hiphopdx.com the album is set to be released September 24th 2015. www.24urban.com

It sounds like his album is nearing completion, as he’s announced the release date on Instagram. Tyler Perry releases tribute video for the late Bobbi Kristina Brown

ATLANTA (AP) - Filmmaker Tyler Perry paid homage to the late Bobbi Kristina Brown through a tribute video that was shown during her private funeral in August. Perry wrote in a Facebook post Friday that the Houston estate asked him to share the 3-minute plus video featuring the 22-yearold daughter of Whitney Houston. Bobbi Kristina died in hospice care July 26 after she was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub in her suburban Atlanta townhome Jan. 31. Bobbi Kristina was the only child between Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown.

In a statement Wednesday, Sony Pictures called the Times story “misleading'' and insisted: “As will become immediately clear to anyone actually seeing the movie, nothing with regard to this important story has been 'softened' to placate anyone.''

The video shows photos of Bobbi Kristina as a baby, posing alongside her parents and as an adult. As each picture flashes across the screen, her mother's song “You Were Loved'' played.

After winning three gold medals at the world championships in Beijing, Bolt was supposed to focus on the season's top time in the 200 metres at the Diamond League meet in Brussels. The King Baudouin Stadium has extra wide curves that halflap racers love and Bolt has never profited fully from the track facilities. Friday would have been the ideal opportunity.

Powell, Simpson and Canadian trainer Christopher Xuereb were placed under criminal investigation two years ago. Police confiscated drugs in a hotel raid where the trio was training in the northeastern town of Lignano Sabbiadoro in July, 2013.

Udine police chief Antonio Pisapia told The Associated Press that the only questionable substance found in the drugs was the stimulant oxilofrine, which is banned only during competition. The sprinters tested positive for oxilofrine at the Jamaican championships in 2013 and served brief bans. Calls to the Udine prosecutor's office went unanswered. Fall Movie Preview: Cary Fukunaga, Idris Elba and Netflix head for new worlds with 'Beasts of No Nation' “I want people to see this film,'' he says, adding that he hopes many still see it in theatres. “To do a traditional theatrical release, a platform release, we might get a few thousand people to see this film. Tens of thousands if we were really lucky.'' Fukunaga, 39, has wanted to make a movie about child soldiers for years. His application to film school to New York University included his plans for it, and he travelled to Sierra Leone in 2003. But it was the 2005 debut novel by Uzodinma Iweala, on which the movie is based, that made everything click for the writer-director.

NEW YORK _ Cary Fukunaga's first feature film, “Sin Nombre''_ which translates to “Nameless,'' was a Spanish-language drama about Honduran immigrants. His latest, “Beasts of No Nation,'' is a brutal story about a boy drafted into a West African rebel army.

It also marks Fukunaga's first project since directing the whole of season one of HBO's “True Detective,'' which won him an Emmy and widespread recognition for his atmospheric direction and moments of one-take bravado. (The less successful season two, he says, he hasn't even seen: “I'm very much aware of the critiques of the show, but I never even got to see the scripts.'') But the ultra-bleak “True Detective,'' he chuckles, is “far lighter'' than “Beasts of No Nation.'' The film was always going to be a more art-house proposition, so Netflix (which purchased the film for about $12 million) almost surely means a much wider audience. The choice, Fukunaga says, wasn't easy, but the lure of Netflix's 65 million subscribers worldwide won him over.

He filmed “Beasts of No Nation'' in Ghana. His 14-year-old star, Abraham Attah, was a street vendor without prior acting experience. For the intrepid Fukunaga, “Beasts of No Nation'' is about using cinema to connect far-apart worlds. “It's when you start seeing people for people and not just as a news headline, it changes your interest,'' says Fukunaga. “The reason for storytelling is to create empathy, to create connections with people around the fire, with people from far-away places that you wouldn't normally think you have anything in common with and yet you actually, absolutely do.'' Bond author Anthony Horowitz apologizes for saying Idris Elba 'too street' to play 007

LONDON _ The author of the new James Bond novel apologized on Tuesday after he said that British actor Idris Elba is “too street'' to play 007. In an interview with the Daily Mail newspaper published over the weekend, Anthony Horowitz, the author of the new Bond novel “Trigger Mortis,'' said Elba is “too 'street' for Bond.'' Elba, 42, has been rumoured to be among the actors considered to replace Daniel Craig as the next Bond. He would be the first black actor to play the spy should he be cast. “Idris Elba is a terrific actor,

but I can think of other black actors who would do it better,'' Horowitz was quoted saying. “It's not a colour issue ... Is it a question of being

Horowitz said Tuesday he was thinking of Elba's gritty detective role in the BBC crime drama “Luther'' during the interview, and did not mean to cause offence. “In the article I expressed the opinion that to my mind Adrian Lester would be a better choice but I'm a writer not a casting director so what do I know?'' he said in a statement that was posted to his Twitter account. Playing History: Slave Trade’ video game altered after social media backlash game as a young slave steward named Putij, who serves on a ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

LOS ANGELES _ An educational video game has been edited following a social media backlash over a scene depicting slaves being packed into a ship. The creators of ``Playing History: Slave Trade'' removed a level Monday which featured black slave characters being dropped into a ship similar to the video game ``Tetris.'' `”Apologies to people who were offended by us using game mechanics to underline the point of how inhumane slavery was,'' read a statement posted on the game's page on Steam, an online store. “The goal was to enlighten and educate people _ not to get sidetracked discussing a small 15-second part of the game.''

The scene was also removed from the official trailer for the title, which was originally released by Copenhagen-based developer Serious Games Interactive in 2013. The game captured attention last week when it went on sale on Steam and was promptly chastised on social media for trivializing slavery with the stacking segment. Serious Games founder Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen took to Twitter to defend “Slave Trade'' against the controversy before deleting his account Tuesday. He could not be immediately reached for comment.

While the “Tetris''-like slave-stacking level has been excised from the game, a talking mouse character who guides players still says at one point: “Slave traders didn't look upon slaves as people but as a product. They therefore stacked the slaves on top of each other to get as many as possible shipped.'' Other titles in the Serious Games' “Playing History'' series include “Playing History: Vikings'' and “Playing History: The Plague.'' By Derrik J.
