Design Manifesto For assessment 3 I made 3 book jackets featuring classic disney stories Cinderella, Snow White and Peter Pan. Font Cover My idea originated from Pintrest. I wanted to create silhouette/shapes that represent something in each story and mould typography into the silhouette. All the silhouettes were drawn on the computer and then printed out. I drew in the silhouettes the typography to make it all fit. Cinderella: The Cinderella silhouette was inspired by the quote ‘Love will find you no matter where you are’. This quote is featured in the book. The silhouette connects with the quote by have an outline of her and the prince in love. The romance between the Prince and Cinderella are a big part of the story. Snow White: The Snow White silhouette features Snow White herself. The typographic quote featured in the silhouette is ‘You are the fairest of them all’. It is the most famous quotation from the book and what Snow White story is known for. Peter Pan: The Peter Pan silhouette features Tinker Bell. The Quotation on the over is by her saying ‘All you need is faith, trust and pixi dust’. The quote gives the cover/ book a magical feel. I wanted all the typography to have a script hand lettering/hand writing feel which I achieved through practicing hand lettering. The outcome of the script gave a very magical/fairy tale yet modern feel.
Lettering/Typography Every word and illustration is hand drawn, scanned and traced in illustrator with the pen tool or image trace. I’ve kept the typography all the same throughout the series of books. I went for a script/hand lettering feel. I started with the letters consisting of a thin line of script. I imagines how it would look if I wrote the words with a brush. On every down or heavy stroke added more thickness to the letters. This gave the words a very modern fairy tale script feel. Non-Typography Illustrations I drew all the little illustrations that are featured on the back of the book and the spine all by hand. I scanned them and turned them into vectors on illustrator. For Peter Pan and Cinderella, I did little pixie stars. I felt like they gave a very magical feel. For Snow White I featured an apple on the back and spine of the book. I also drew the apple and put dots around it to give a magical feel. The silhouettes were inspired by images of the disney characters. I took some images from pintrest and traced the outline of the characters to make a silhouette. Colour Palette - Illustrations & Typography I kept it really clean and simple throughout the Typography and illustrations. I kept it all to white to balance off the background colours. Colour Palette - Background For all three book jackets I used the same technique. On photoshop I used water colour brushes and the pastel colours red, pink and green. Each background used the same brush but were all brushed differently across the document.
Back Page All the back pages have the same theme happening. The blurb in centred in the cover. It is the exact same blurb that is featured on the real books. The back page also features Walt Disney’s logo as they are the publisher, the barcode and some small hand drawn illustrations that coordinate with the theme of the story.
Cinderella: I used a pastel pink as the background colour. I feel as though the colour goes well with the theme of cinderella and has fairy tale feel to it.
Spine I have kept the 3 spines very clean and simple. Featuring the title of the book, a small illustration and Walt Disney’s logo.
Peter Pan: I used a pastel lime green as the background colour. The pastel lime green matches with Peter Pan and Tinker Bells outfits as characters and theme throughout the story.
Snow White: I used a pastel red as the background colour. The pastel red matches with Snow Whites head band, dress and the apple throughout the story.
