Message from the

NEWS EDITOR Hello Hedgehogs It seems like time is really passing by. Can you believe it's almost the end of the term? It's nice to reminisce on all the events that happened this year by looking back at old newsletters. Looking back at all the service projects and events planned during the year makes me miss in person events. None of the less, we made the best of our circumstances and really had an amazing term. But hold your horses, bare with me for a few more months. I would like to thank everyone who has been reading these newsletters from the beginning of the term and looking at my improvement throughout the year. I hope you have been enjoying this journey as I have and I will continue to make my last few newsletters more blossoming.

Rolling to Service,

Mikaela Dinh Division 13 West News Editor

LTG LETTER

What's Up Hedgehogs

Are you ready to SPRING into March with us? I know the rest of the Division Leadership Team and I are! We’re nearing the end of our term, so we hope to continue having the amazing levels of participation that we have been getting from our hedgehogs at our events. As we continue on with club elections, I want to remind all candidates and clubs to reach out if they have any questions. I can’t wait to meet all the new officers and getting them ready to prepare for DCON this April! We hope all of our members are ready to enter a new era of our Division’s history. As always, continue inviting friends to join Key Club and become future hedgehogs. It’s never too late to become a member and ignite someone’s passion for service! For now, enjoy this month’s issue of the newsletter and all it has to offer. Until next time! Rolling to Service,

Javier Nunez Division 13 West 2020-2021 Lt. Governor

EA MESSAGES What's going on Hedgehogs?! SENIORS, I hope you all are having an AMAZING last few months of high school and are thinking ahead and planning for the future! If you have any questions regarding college or your next plans for the future, send me an email or a DM, I would be more than happy to help! It is never too late to plan for the future! Juniors, sophomores, and fresh humans!! Run for a cabinet position at your local school Key Club! Being part of your school cabinet is a great way to build your leadership experience (that colleges look for) and make connections between schools in the division. Even though sitting in one place for hours staring at the screen can be overwhelming, spring break is comin' up, so keep pushing through! You go this! I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE AN AMAZING MONTH! See you all in the next DCM!

Hey! As we all know the term is ending! So we should all end this term strong. Continue to submit your hours and participate in the service projects. It is also election time, so I encourage you to run for a position. Yes, it is fun to be a member of Key Club, and if you think you can go further try going for a certain position. It can be really FUN!! If you have any questions feel free to ask or even ask your president questions about any positions. Stay safe hedgehogs.

CLUB ELECTIONS why care?

what positions are there

As a member and/or potential future officer, picking your club's next board is important in making sure the club is led by the people who can help it thrive the most for the following term

PRESIDENT

BEE-ing an officer means taking initiative, helping offer new ideas for the club, and ultimately bonding more with your members.

VICE PRESIDENT

can I run? YES! Just BEE a current dues-paid member of your home club and have the wish to run. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your club election: Know what positions your club is offering and learn about the roles/duties from past/current officers Use the CNH Cyberkey or go to tinyurl.com/d13welections for more resources Prepare your campaign speech and BEE ready to answer some basic questions about why you wish to be an officer

are there any changes The only change is that clubs MUST hold their elections virtually Only exception is if the club is already meeting IN-PERSON (not recommended

to elections this year?

The president helps LEAD the club in service and ohana, delegates tasks, and communicates with members + officers

The VP is the second-in-command, helping the president and other board members when needed. In the absence of the president, the VP takes initiative and helps lead the group

SECRETARY The Secretary is in charge of tracking service hours, taking meeting minutes, and working with the Treasurer to update the member roster

TREASURER The treasurer helps create a club budget, plan fundraisers, record transactions + expenses, and works with the Secretary

EDITORS Editors (Historians, News, and Tech) work to keep the club updated through graphics and technology

other potential positions CLASS REPRESENTATIVES Class Reps can be used to strengthen the bonds between individual grade levels and the club. Help communicate the concerns of their grade to the core board

VANESSA SANDOVAL

HEY HEDGEHOGS! My name is Vanessa Sandoval but I typically go by Nessa! I’m currently a Junior at South Gate High School and I am so excited to be the new LTG for this wonderful division. I have been a proud key clubber for three years now. I first joined my freshman year as just a member and became Vice President my sophomore year. Currently, I am my club’s president and for my last year of high school, I will be serving as LTG. I find much joy in serving my community and making a positive impact and I can not wait to see our division grow. Other than Key Club I am part of Academic Decathlon and Cross Country/Track and Field as I love running and working out! Also I love animals and live with over thirty companion animals :P Rolling to Service,

Vanessa Sandoval

WELCOME WHAT'S POPPIN' HEDGEHOGS! I am Marjorie Luzuriaga, and I am a sophomore at Larchmont Charter High School! I am the president of Larchmont Charter Key Club. I can’t wait to work with other key clubs in the area!

Marjorie Luzuriaga member's choice: why key club?

Larchmont Key Club President 2020-2021

I joined Key Club because I thought it would be a great and fun experience! I am also willing to help out the community and I know that key club is a great way to do that. Overall, key club has been great even though it’s online and I can’t wait to be in it once we go back to school! - Madeline Urizar, Sophomore

14

I decided to join Key Club because it looked really fun and for the volunteer hours. - Ilya Koby, Sophomore

LARCHMONT interview with marjorie

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN KEY CLUB? I am looking forward to promoting the importance of volunteering through leading volunteer projects. I am so excited to meet new people, gain new leadership skills, and help the community.

HOPES FOR YOUR CLUB THIS COMING TERM? I just hope that all members learn to love key club as I do! Larchmont Charter Key Club is new to the school, but I hope for many volunteer projects to be done for the Los Angeles community, and I hope we can start helping out the rest of our division! Team building has also been a big thing for me because of distance learning, and I have seen such great improvements in collaboration work.

member's choice: why key club? I wanted to join Key Club because I wanted to do something good for the community. I think that it’s good to give back and help others which made me interested in Key Club because we are given that opportunity. - Sophia Cortez, Sophomore

WE WISH LARCHMONT GOOD LUCK IN THE NEW TERM 16

OF DIMES MARCH SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE PROJECT What is March of Dimes? Through generous funding and assistance from the U.S. public, March of Dimes has been tremendously successful in discovering the genetic causes of birth defects, promoting newborn screening for health concerns, educating medical professionals about healthy pregnancy procedures, and much more. With these things in mind, it’s abundantly clear why the Cali-Nev-Ha District has chosen to partner with March of Dimes, in hopes of bettering the lives of infants across the United States.

SERVICE WEEKEND

Allison Ojeda Historian | Lincoln During our last general meeting, Lincoln Key Club announced that we will be holding a Service Weekend. From Feb. 12th through Feb. 15th, members of Lincoln Key Club will have the opportunity to gain service hours while also being able to help raise funds for either UNICEF or other charity options. Through the UNICEF website, people are able to raise money for UNICEF itself by answering simple math questions. You can also help earn money for other charities through the beanbeanbean website and by answering easy trivia questions. By participating in either/both activities, members of Lincoln's home club can earn up to 6 community service hours.

WONDERLAND

IN SERVICE Maya Henry Historian | GALA

On Monday, January 18th, 2021, Division 13 West kicked off the new year with a new service week: Wonderland of Service. From the enticing name to the impossibly aesthetic Google Sheet used to track service hours, the first day of the service week certainly proved to be a wonderland. Math for Change offered Key Clubbers up to three hours of service and dared to make math fun. The impossible pairing of the two opposites challenged clubbers to answer simple quick math questions in sixty seconds. Depending on how quickly and how accurately the questions were answered, different amounts of money were donated via UNICEF. The high monetary score of GALA Key Club is just over $37! The math “game” was the perfect combination of fun, addicting, competitive, and change-making. If the other service events of Wonderland week are even half as good as Monday’s, the service week is sure to be talked about for the rest of the term!

KING DREW SERVICE Katie Perez Historian | King Drew

WEEK

For the final week of January, King Drew decided to have a service week. Each day from the 25th to the 29th we had a different service each day. For example, on Wednesday the 26th we had Unicef Wednesday members were given the chance to help kids in need. The way to help kids in need is to go on a math website and do math problems. As you did the math

D13 CONCLAVE

Simon Zhong Historian | Downtown Magnet High On January 30, we had our conclave with D13S and D13N. Though mid-way my wifi cut out, we got to see our new Lieutenant governor for the next year! The speeches for the contenders were really great and we got to see the next selected LTG’s for the other two divisions as well. I’m sad that I won’t be around for their term though

JANUARY DCM WITH D37N

Allison Ojeda Historian | Lincoln On the 23rd of January, both Division 13 West and Division 27 North held our space-themed January DCM. Once the Zoom meeting had started, both divisions were sent into one of two breakout rooms to go over club updates, old business such as division updates, and any new business that all clubs need to be aware of such as upcoming fundraisers and division elections. In between each transition from activity to activity, our presenters went over any notes left in our love box. The love box is a google form where you can leave a nice message for someone else attending the event as well. After going through all the important information, it was finally time for game night. People were sent into different breakout rooms to participate in a game or Among Us. Among Us is a mafia-type game where an impostor (s) are tasked with eliminating all the other players who are called crewmates. After a couple of rounds of the game, we then moved on to playing some skribbl.io. Skribbl.io is a game similar to charades. Once game night had come to an end, it was time for closing. We once again went over any important information and read any last messages left in the love box. We turned on our cameras and took our photo. The January DCM had officially ended.
