Registration
NICE TO MEET YOU, OUR FRIENDS!!
With hearts teeming with expectation and cheerfulness, the team of AM19 in Taiwan is ready! August first is a mild, sunny day, welcoming medical students from all around the world to Wanhua district in Taipei, Taiwan. Although most of the delegates have experienced a long and tiring flight reaching Taiwan, they are still energetic and wear bright smiles on their faces as they are all looking forward to the unforgettable GA event! As more and more delegates have rushed into the registration desks, precious moments are captured: delegates who have already known one another hugging and chatting joyfully, the organizing committee busy dealing with the registration, and responsive delegates happily cooperating with photographers for interviews. Every story perfectly responds to the main theme of the AM--friendship. The semiannual General Assembly is always a golden opportunity for people to meet up with their old friends and exchange innovative informations. We hope that our enthusiasm and vitality could be completely expressed throughout the AM, and everyone of you could enjoy the meeting to the fullest!
What do the delegates think about “AM in Taiwan”? Three Kurdish girls: They feel that the weather here is a little bit too humid to them, which is distinct from climate of their homeland. When talking about the most anticipated part in GA, they said the Night Tour is the one they have been looking forward to for a long time, especially Taiwanese night markets.
Two Croatians: Both of them are so excited to look for something remarkable in Taiwan. When being asked about their GA experiences, one of the Croatian representatives said that she had already taken part in General Assembly for 3 times, including Canada last August, Slovenia this March and Taiwan right now! Another Croatian 3 rd -year medical student is looking forward to everything from now on since it’s his first-time participation. Hope that the authentic cuisine, sightseeing spots and people here in Taiwan could make this tour extremely unforgettable !

Opening Ceremony
Opening Ceremony
Reported by Ho-Ching Hung, Wei-An Wen
l On the night of August first, officials, delegates and volunteers from all over the world participated in the distinguished opening ceremony held in the Sheraton Hotel. More than 1000 people attended the meaningful session.
Jasmine Tan, the chairperson of the AM19, kicks off the ceremony with a motivative address. In her speech, she mentioned some of the prestigious features of Taiwan, such as electing President Tsai as Taiwan’s first woman president in 2016, becoming the first Asian country to legalize samesex marriage, and implementing the National Health Insurance covering 99% of the population. However, she empathizes that that story isn’t miraculous. “Our path was paved with blood, sweat, tears, and even lives of those who came before us. As youth, now the task falls on us, and it’s our mission to continue to light the way for countries still on the path to democracy and human rights.”
Additionally, we are honored to have Dr. Tai-Yuan Chiu with us. Dr. Tai-Yuan Chiu is the president of Taiwan Medical Association. He indicates that as the forefront of medicine, biotechnology, and public health, Taiwan has always sought for improvement and is capable of showing a brilliant medical environment. With his firm encouragements, we are sure that we could offer the best to the delegates. Besides profound speeches, the assembly also arranges dozens of traditional and exquisite cultural performances, including Taiwanese opera, Zhentou, Diabolo Ring, folk songs played by guitar, etc. When it comes to singing the National Anthem of Republic of China, Ivy Lee’s graceful voice capped off the evening.

Opening Ceremony
Aside from the aforementioned speakers, the president of FMS-Taiwan, Po-Chin Li, gave a heartwarming speech sending gratitude to all of the officials and delegates who take part in the AM19, leading to another thought-provoking address delivered by the Minister of Health and Welfare, Shih-Chung, Chen. Throughout Dr. Chen’s speech, he inspires us to explore innovation in medicine, healthcare system, and health service delivery in different settings. Together, one can exchange experiences and initiate projects to create a healthier world. Last but not least, this AM wouldn’t be completed without the support of Batool Wahdani, the president of IFMSA. In her speech, she underscores the values of courage and passion. She also says that it’s with the support and guidance of IFMSA that medical students are capable of facing challenges and violation together, wiping out disparities and miseries. To conclude, just as the ‘Change in 5 years’ video played on the ceremony, there’s never nothing changing; nevertheless, as time passes by, we are going to become stronger and fearless, to save the ruthless change of environment, and to become a better human beings willing to confront any changes to make the world a better place.

Welecome Party
Welcome Party After the long flights, it’s time for the delegates to shake the tiredness off with our welcome party! The dazzling lightings that relaxed the participants, the heavy pounds of music played by the DJ, fantabulously dressed delegates in tuxedos and glamorous dresses...all of the finely arranged elements are making the party multi-coloured and lively! However, the party didn’t really climb to the climax until interactions start to shape between all of the crowd, as everyone are eager to make friends and feel free chatting others standing nearby. Dancing, humming to the songs, and taking selfies together, are all forming the intimacy of the AM. It’s worth mentioning that the bartenders are all Taiwanese staffs! ! It took them a lot of time to learn how to mix the drinks. Let’s give them a round of applause! Additionally, DIY activities are also arranged for delegates to make their own souvenirs . With all of the wonderful activities, are you expecting for more? Then don’t miss our any of the sessions in the following days! Let’s give our all out to work hard, play hard!

Theme Event 1
Theme Event 1
Session 1 | How Can Technology Bring More Sustainability to This World? Dr. Daniel Salcedo emphasizes the integration of technology and medical education. Having his own values, he states that as the technology is changing rapidly, new ways of teaching and interacting between students and teachers should as well be upgraded. He also points out that there are six main obstacles that stops the medical education from improving: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
The unclear transition from preclinical to clinical Only theories are taught at school Memorizing information without understanding Boring lectures that fail to propel students The low quality of clinical teaching The lack of time and preparation for the clinical studies
After the introduction of Dr. Salcedo, students are divided into six groups for further discussions on how to deal with the stumbling steps of medical education. One of the group shared their ideas by classifying the solutions into five parts: students, teachers, hospitals, government, and NGOs. We, as a medical student, can solve the problem by giving more feedbacks to our teachers in order to increase the frequency of interaction between educators and learners. Moreover, we can help and even teach our teachers if they are not familiar with those technology. During the group discussions, not only were the students participating actively, indicating that Dr. Salcedo truly knew how to let students focus on lectures and learn interactively. Throughout the lecture, it’s surprising to see that Dr. Salcedo really acts the values he believes in, and utilizes simple technology such as an i-Pad. Hope a perfect learning environment could be achieved someday in the future!

The real challenge is that it is progressing too quickly.” With a rapidly aging society, we must quickly devise new ways of providing care for the growing population of the elderly aged.
The key to future healthcare is integrative medicine that answers not only the aspects of medicine, but also other needs of the patients. As doctors of the 21st century, we are often overwhelmed with the amount of exciting new technology that are introduced to us day by day. However, we must remember that the patient’s need always come first. It is only when we understand the patient that essence of healthcare is truly fulfilled.

Since one of the aims of GA is to “go green”, this stand advocates the eco-friendly concept in innovative ways. For instance, you can count carbon footprints and convert the expense into money. After that, delegates can choose whatever they want from the flea market, and the money they paid will be donated to The Society of Wilderness, an organization hoping to protect the biological diversity of Taiwan. These interesting approaches to a serious issue like being eco-friendly is definitely a smart way to raise public awareness!
