Ask her if she feels whether television could surpass cinema, and Poorna says, “Yes, I think so. I go to the movies now with my son. Whenever I am in a theatre, I would be wearing 3D glasses. I don’t engage with cinema in theatres the way I used to. I am very proud to be a part of American television.” The new TV show follows the journey of a lawyer Jack Stone who seeks to absolve a young Pakistani-American student Naz who is accused of murdering a girl on the Upper West Side. I think you should do Bollywood music once you’ve made a mark in your own market GURU RANDHAWA, SINGER

hough singer Guru Randhawa (left) has received recognition in the Indian music scene after collaborating with Bohemia, he wants to have a strong hold in independent music before venturing in to Bollywood. “I am happy doing my stuff. Whatever I have achieved is because of this independent market. I think you should do Bollywood music once you’ve made a mark in your own market,” he says. While he is happy with his current status as a singer, he remembers that starting off in the industry was not easy. “When I entered the music industry the biggest struggle was reaching out to people. There are so many artists who have good content but they are finding it difficult to take their work to the market. I had a lot of content but there were studios who wanted my songs free of cost. I did my first album with my own record label. I think the most difficult bit is recording the first album,” he says. He adds that financial support is very important for all budding singers. “These days video quality is important. If a new artist comes and he doesn’t have a good record label to invest in him, then there is no point,” says the 24-year-old singer known for his tracks such as Yar Mod Do and Khat. n yashika.mathur@hindustantimes.com
