THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY D-DAY LANDINGS 6th June 1944

I am not quite sure where the year is going! Easter weekend is just around the corner and some days almost feel like spring is here, and then the rain and the wind come back to remind us that it is still only March. At least the garden is starting to come to life and the hedgerows are once again showing green leaves.

Almost 12 months ago there was growing excitement in the Willis household as the day of our son’s wedding on May 6th was approaching. Then, according to our son, disaster! The Coronation was to take place on the same day. Would anyone come? Did we need to postpone? Should we have a big screen to show the event? Calming words were said and the crisis passed; both events could take place on the same day, the wonders of iPlayer! As Oliver & Hannah are preparing to celebrate their first year of married life so too is the King, no doubt looking back at his Coronation Day with many memories of a year that has certainly been memorable; for lots of reasons. We felt that King Charles’s Coronation year should not go unmarked so once again Caroline has created a design which we hope he would approve of. We all wish his Majesty, and the Princess of Wales, well as they recover. At this time of the year lots of new ranges are inspired by the awakening of nature and Moorcroft have some superb new additions which are well worth a look.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work with superbly talented artists to produce some incredibly memorable and historic pieces. Many of the strongest images have come from commemoratives for key events in the many world conflicts. With so few of those who served with such gallantry during the second world war still alive it is so important that we don’t forget their role in maintaining our freedom, and the sacrifices of the many who did not return.

There were many great operations but one that I felt I had more of an appreciation of than most was D Day. Having visited the Normandy Beaches as a youngster and seeing the remains of the Mulberry Harbour and the amazing museum it all seemed so much more real than things I had only read about or watched in a film. The ingenuity and bravery of the troops who planned and executed this mission is almost impossible to comprehend. All in the days before the level of communication and technology we have today. Caroline Dadd has done extensive research to put together the artwork for our first commemorative tankard to mark 80 years since the D Day invasion, as well as a truly special collection to mark 150 years since the birth of arguably our greatest Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

There has been much discussion in the office this month about teddy bears. I think that we all had some sort of cuddly toy as children, I had a teddy bear, which I still have, and my brother had a Panda. This was all prompted by an email I received about a range of bears that we had not sold before but the name of one rang a bell with me. Both Clemens and Deans have a long history and produce charming pieces.

As soon as I saw the Clemens range I knew that this was what my late father had bought our son when he was born. It was unusual for my father to be allowed to shop for such things “unsupervised” so it sticks in my mind even more that he went out to a small shop in Nottingham to purchase the bear for Oliver. When our first delivery arrived it is safe to say there was much excitement, they are really very sweet, and we all had one that we wanted to take home!

Janet has had fun this time working with Kayleigh to put together a few themed pages within the catalogue. Bears were an obvious choice for one as so many of our favourite suppliers produce bears. Until we started looking we didn’t realise how many bears there actually were! Janet has a very soft spot for cats so that was another collection that they enjoyed selecting. Again there were many to choose from and a huge variety of styles and materials. We could not forget the dog lovers amongst you and again it is amazing how much creativity goes into the creation of the ranges of that we have. Do take the time to have a good look at these pages as there are some great pieces there.

Since we acquired Havens we have taken a renewed interest in tableware and in particular tea ware. It is certainly true that tea tastes better out of a bone china cup and what better than classic Royal Albert to add a little something special to your afternoon tea and biscuits, or possibly a scone and clotted cream!

D-DAY LANDINGS THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY

Around the rim of the plate underneath patriotic bunting, Caroline has drawn a trio of a land girl, royal marine and home guard alongside spitfires, and poignant images of the land, sea and air invasion. His white bulldog nicknamed the ‘British Bulldog’, sits proudly framed by his favoutite butterflies and the shrub rose named after him. At the top of the plate border, a V for Victory is enrobed in poppies with two doves of peace. Central on the plate, six spitfires frame an iconic drawing of Sir Winston Churchill wearing his famous spotty bow tie, designed within elements of The Churchill Crest.
