Simon’s ramblings! I always need some inspiration to start me off with my “ramblings” and one phone call in particular this morning has helped me to get focused. Janet has now almost completed the catalogue selections, Steffi has finished the photography and Caroline is busy with the artwork, the whole process takes well over a month before it heads off to the printer, and with a catalogue every 8 weeks it is something that never seems to stop. As usual we hope that there are some new things to excite you and although it is July, although the weather doesn’t seem to know, it is the start of “Goviers at Christmas”. Our ranges will grow in September and November but with lots of delays with supply we are starting as early as possible this year. There will be a new range of Goviers baubles along with new annual ranges from many of our suppliers in the coming months.
Sitting down to write I am always thinking that it is probably only my family and colleagues who read my musings and so it is reassuring to have comments on the phone which let me know that someone else has read it! Many of you may know that I spent over 20 years working with Royal Crown Derby but my career in the industry started way before that. I was always keen on cars, and nothing has changed, and my plan as a fresh faced and slim 18-year-old was to spend my career working in the motor industry. Well, that plan didn’t work very well. Denby, Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, Beswick, Minton and finally Royal Crown Derby; none of them great motoring names! But they were happy times and it is an industry I love and the skills in it are just incredible. I have been lucky to work with some inspirational people in my career so far, I will single out Hugh Gibson the former owner at Royal Crown Derby as being someone who taught me so much and recognised my strengths, and was also fully aware of my weaknesses. When Hugh bought RCD in 2000, I was lucky enough to be part of his team and during the next 12 challenging years he was unstintingly supportive of the business and of his team. When I look back, we did some truly amazing things and had some fun along the way. I had the best team ever, and am so lucky to have some of them with me again now. The pieces we introduced were even better than I think we all knew at the time. This has all come into sharp focus lately as we have responded to calls to find older paperweights for collectors. I am now actively looking for paperweights at auction, and from private collections, most of them from the era that I remember very fondly. Many of the ones featured in this issue bring back memories and a host of stories that I don’t have room to tell. In the past Goviers ran a paperweight exchange, but the accounting and admin involved in that is not something that we are able to handle now, so this is our way of providing pieces that you may have missed out on at the time. There are some truly magnificent designs and there will always be more on our website as I find them. I hope you enjoy what we have found but remember there is generally only one of each so prompt ordering is strongly advised.
Excitement is now starting to build for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and even Her Majesty seems to be genuinely looking forward to a year of celebrations, something to take her mind off the loss of her dear husband Prince Philip. After a little wait our range of Goviers commemoratives are now in stock and everyone who has seen them has enthused about the design and the final product. Again, a tribute to the designer Caroline and the team at the factory in Stoke on Trent led by Dave & Graham. More pieces will be available from some of our other suppliers later in the year. Once again you will see our “Goviers at Home” brochure in the envelope. We have been delighted at the reaction to many of the new brands we have added particularly Dora and Mermaid. This time we have added Samuel Groves, from the same maker as Mermaid, this range has been tested by the team and we wholeheartedly recommend them.
We are a small team here and I am sure those of you who phone in your orders will probably have spoken to most of us by now. We try to provide the best service possible and listen to any suggestions you make. It is with that in mind that in September we are planning to move the catalogue to an A4 size, larger easier to read type and bigger pictures. We hope you will like it but please let us know one way or another. I hope that there is something here to tempt you or at very least give you a smile. We work hard to find new and different ranges, many of which are just not available anywhere else. Many of the team are having a well-earned break during August so there will be less cover on the phones but do leave us a message and we will get back to you. Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the new freedoms when they come.

Designed and created by Longman’s Florists under the leadership of Martin Longman, the Queen’s Coronation bouquet was a floral symbol for all four parts of the United Kingdom. England was represented by orchids and lilies of the valley while stephanotis symbolised Scotland. For Wales, there were more orchids grown in the principality while carnations were used to symbolise Northern Ireland with some of these blooms also chosen for the Isle of Man. Orchids were also personally significant to the new Queen who had carried a collection of these blooms in her wedding bouquet.

Paul Saintenoy was one of Brussels’s most prominent architects, inside his house, was one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau stained glass windows. Based on an image by painter Henri Privat-Livemont, the window showcases a woman emerging from the centre of a swell of Japanese inspired waves. Called ‘La Vague’ (The Wave), the stained-glass window refers to the print The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai, in which a huge wave bears down on three boats. Designer, Nicola Slaney, wanted to create a prestigious piece as part of the Art Nouveau Collection. Around the base of her vase, an ethereal woman emerges from the sea, her hair adorned with seashells, together with seaweed intermingled amongst her own flowing locks. Above her is the sea itself, created by the clever use of small fan shaped blue arcs, which leads your eye to the sky which is infused with a soft, golden glow as the evening’s sun sets.

The Glassmaker’s House on Rue du Lac 6 in Brussels, was designed by Ernest Delune. The house, designed between 1883 and 1902, embodied the Art Nouveau style with its unusual circular stained-glass staircase window and Art Nouveau frontage.

The imagery for the windows was inspired by the floral theme of ‘thought’ and combined detailed flowerheads in red, wine, orange and yellow, curvaceous green leaves and black stems created from fine Art Nouveau lines, filled with movement. Designer, Nicola Slaney’s six-piece range, incorporates a framed plaque, that honours Delune with its central flower motif at the top of the plaque, under which intricate panels of flowers in shades of blue and purple are to be discovered. The curving lines of the Art Nouveau style bend in unison, carrying your eye downwards towards a series of turquoise leaves, each tubed with a double line of black tubelining. Each of the five additional pieces in the range has different linework, an homage by Nicola to the fluidity of Art Nouveau, a design style that encouraged individuality and expression.

This is a tale of the changing seasons. The dry oak leaves represent the chill winds of a cold winter: fresh green grass and bright yellow daffodils stand up for spring. Pure white blossom is there to herald the fruits of autumn while the colourful butterflies provide an advertisement for the summer ahead. Helen Dale has given us an image of a whole year although our hedgehog may not even notice what nature is trying to tell it, as it trundles through a world all of its own.

Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’ is one of the most popular dwarf daffodil varieties available. Standing at only a few centimetres high, its small size makes it ideal for planting in patio containers or at the front of the border. The deep golden yellow flowers appear in early spring, with each stem bearing up to three blooms. In her design, Vicky sweetly places two blooms face to face as if they were serenading each other in an operatic duet, or quite literally a tête-à-tête, a quiet conversation. The Royal Horticultural Society have given this daffodil a prestigious Award of Garden Merit and this design quietly gets our salute at Moorcroft.

£195 The creation of each Belleek basket tells us a story about the amazing art of Belleek basket making. Basket and flower making was introduced to Belleek by William Henshall who came to work for Belleek Pottery in the late 1860s. Over the next forty years he developed the craft and trained the local craftsmen in the necessary skills. These in turn passed their skills down through the following generations to the present day.

The Hanako Basket has been patiently hand woven in an organic shape to reflect that of a pond and features hand applied elements depicting acquatic flora and fauna. The longest living freshwater fish ever recorded was a female koi named Hanako, she lived to the grand age of 226. The koi represents longevity, perseverance and abundance. Hand crafted water lillies surround the 'pond' and are a symbol of enlightenment, beauty and purity. Menyanthes, a traditional pond margin plant, represents tranquility, repose and calmness, whilst the frog overlooking the 'pond'; a symbol of fertility and transformation. In Celtic traditions the frog is seen as healing and cleansing, as well as an emblem of rebirth. This striking basket receives a special backstamp and will only be produced for the year of 2021.
