Ramblings from across the Channel!

Once again, I am lucky enough to be looking out on a sunny day in France. The final pieces of the catalogue often seem to come together while Janet and I are enjoying a break in our favourite part of the Loire Valley. After the tree blossom in May it is the fabulous display of flowers on all the roses that has stood out this visit. Hopefully this is a good omen for the wine producers in the area, only time will tell.

Despite our very best efforts we are still waiting to send out some of the thousands of orders we received for Coronation product. The warehouse team have been doing a fantastic job of turning round orders as soon as stock arrives, but we are still waiting for large amounts of product from Halcyon Days, William Edwards and Royal Crown Derby. We are promised that by the time the catalogue lands with you a great deal more product will have arrived but with dates slipping we are reluctant to make firm commitments. I do sincerely apologise for the delays and thank you for your amazing patience. It really is appreciated.

Like most businesses we have been seeing costs rise and although we have done our best to make savings where we can we have been forced to make changes to our postage charges from July. Postage will now be free on all orders over £50 but orders under £50 will incur a £4.50 charge. This is still below what most companies charge, and we will always endeavour to be as competitive as possible.

Finding new suppliers is always a challenge but one that the whole team relish and enjoy. We are all excited to have found Canterbury Bears, a small specialist manufacturer based in Kent. The bears are made with such care that we really hope you are going to love them as much as we do. The one that initially caught our eye was the King Charles bear, but the rest of the range is superb too.

As you know there was huge demand, way more than was expected by us and our suppliers, for items marking the run up to the Coronation of King Charles. Most of these were designed way before we knew any specific details of the ceremony, so we always planned to ask Caroline to design a range celebrating the actual day once we knew what actually happened. Our new God Save The King series is designed to compliment our hugely successful Platinum Jubilee range. Caroline has drawn inspiration from key elements that the King and Queen brought into the

Coronation, as well as the historic ceremonial symbols. This range is designed and decorated in Stoke on Trent and will be available in August. In addition, Caroline has hand drawn all of the elements of a new jigsaw puzzle, again made in the UK and exclusive to Goviers.

We have been adding new pieces to our collection of pre-loved paperweights and our Wish List customers should have heard from Steffi if we have managed to locate the items you wanted. If there are pieces you are searching for, please let us know and we will do our best to find them for you. All our pieces are checked and photographed before appearing in the catalogue or online. We try only to buy items with boxes but occasionally we do have unboxed pieces at a lower price, this is always included in the description.

As many of you will know I used to say that Christmas was not allowed to start until after my birthday in mid-December, always something that Janet fought strongly against being very keen to make the festive season last as long as possible! In the world of Goviers, we start talking decorations in February! I have totally lost the battle. The first Christmas ranges are previewed this month with many more to follow. I know it is a cliché, but some ranges do sell out very early so I would advise ordering as soon as you see something you like.

It is with huge sadness that I announce the passing of Amanda Bushell on 9th June. Amanda had been with us from the very start of our Goviers journey in 2019, and with me at Royal Crown Derby from 2009 to 2013, without her we would not be where we are today. Our web site and systems were all Amanda’s doing, working away to make our ideas come to life in her calm and quiet way. We are all struggling to come to terms with the loss of such a dear friend and colleague, and at such a young age. Amanda was a very private person and so it was not until 48 hours before she passed away that we knew the full extent of her condition. Janet and I saw her only 8 weeks before her death and she was looking forward to the end of her treatment and a return to some more normality. Life can be very cruel.

Amanda leaves a devastated husband, John, and a beautiful daughter Isabella, aged just 10. Our thoughts go out to all her family and friends at this very difficult time and I am sure that those of you who spoke or communicated with Amanda would concur with that sentiment. We will be adding Cancer Research to our fund raising in addition to our plans with CRY.

Goviers God Save The King - A Coronation Celebration

Inspired by the pageantry and unique events of the Kings' Coronation, Caroline has been recording some of the momentous events of the coronation day to create a new jigsaw.

The jigsaw shows so many memorable events: from the journey to and from Westminster Abbey, the historic ceremony and crowning to the celebrations at Buckingham Palace and across the United Kingdom.

The intricate border merges architectural elements from Westminster Abbey including the amazing Rose Window, contrasting with a wild-flower meadow teaming with happy birds and insects.

All in all we hope our latest challenging jigsaw will be a fun way to preserve your memories of a monumental day.

This beautiful handmade porcelain Belleek Basket is a smaller replica of one gifted on behalf of County Fermanagh to H.M. King Charles III on 25th May 2023 at Enniskillen Castle.

A Celebration of the King’s Coronation on May 6th 2023, the Coronation Basket is adorned with Delphiniums, said to be His Majesty’s favourite flower from one of the gardens in Highgrove.

Each intricately woven and flowered basket is crafted in the same timeless fashion and skills introduced by William Henshall dating back to the 1870’s. The covered oval Basket is flowered on both the lid and the base with Delphiniums, a new flower especially developed by the craftspeople in Belleek Pottery. Using a combination of hand painted tones of blue and hidden bumble bees nestled in the flowers make this special basket really come to life.

The Coronation Basket comes with a special blue backstamp which has been added to a porcelain plaque on the base and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Magenta and cerise-pink sweet peas create an opulent mix of colour with picotee blooms of eye-catching canary-yellow, and their upper petals gently tinged with terracotta red. Held among a scramble of narrow leaves and closed buds, Eckford Darlings holds an under-glaze fusion not usually associated with the traditional maroon and purple original colours of the sweet pea. Named after nurseryman, Henry Eckford (1823-1905), who cross-bred and developed the sweet pea, and received the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour for creating nearly 200 sweet pea varieties.

In 1899, the head gardener at Althorp Park in Northamptonshire, the country seat of Earl Spencer, was Silas Cole. He noticed that the blooms on one plant, a shell-pink bloom named, Prima Donna, were outstandingly differentthe petals were curiously frilled. The plant was encouraged to seed and a number of plants flowered the following year retaining the frilly form and colour of the parent plant.

Here a colourful sweet pea array clamber with swirling tendrils into a soporific coral-bed bloom of maroon, purple, violet-blue, flame angelfish-orange and shell-pink wings and keels to calm the soul under the ornamental frilled markings of fluttering pale blue butterflies.

Sweet peas can be grown in pots or in the ground, training them up a trellis or even a garden shed for a beautiful display. The Garden Shed is found under the shadow of English elm, where shifter sweet peas, tied in by neat tubelining around a garden shed and curious array of gardening tools, Wellington boots, and even a wheelbarrow holding shaped hedging plants, expose their extraordinary array of colour hues and shades in this design.

Sweet peas have about 5 or more flowers to a stem and they open from the bottom up, so the colour changes up the stem and make a spectacular display. In this design, their soft raspberry and cream colours transform into blooms tinged with pink-mauve hues and shades of brilliant blue and deep purple, exposing fantastical bursts of colour at the same time.

An extensive collection of early nineteenth-century watercolours of flowers from the RHS Lindley Collections, beautifully painted in a set of over three hundred paintings, by Caroline Maria Applebee (c. 1787 –16 September 1854), the eldest daughter of the Rev. John Applebee, have been adapted into a Moorcroft Collection of seven pieces by Moorcroft designer, Nicola Slaney.

Applebee’s tiger lily painted with a swooping damselfly, is really quite something with two stems of vivid-orange tiger lily flowers in bud and in bloom,featuring curved petals speckled with boysenberry dark spots. In Nicola's vase, tiger lilies rise from the base of the vase on their long, strappy stems, in tight-lipped buds and various blooming stages. Virgin-white buds open with their rich-plum speckles folding over amber cups with a vivid-orange full bloom complete with the plant’s notorious curled back petals, dark spots and magnificent six stamens to create an exotic display of colour. Airborne damselflies captured with Applebee’s stylised pastel, cone-shaped wings, swoop and glide around this stunning vase.

Christmas rose reborn (Helleborus niger) is an exquisite vase. Inspired by Applebee’s hellebores, Nicola takes your eye from the leaf-stalks at the crown of the plant and glides them upwards with the delicate hues of these white, butter-yellow centred flowers tinged pinkish-green on the five sepals, blooming from part of the leaf-stalks.

Flaunting a multitude of colours, Viola Tricolor is a trio of pansies with upward facing blooms: deep-purple with morphing streaks of cotton-white centres holding dark central veins captured against the deep purple petals on the reverse of the bloom; mustard-yellow pansies holding tiger-eyed central stripes of maroon against dark-maroon under-petals, faintly blotched yellow towards the stem; and cotton-white blooms with dark central veins, edged deep-purple on the white-underside of the petals.

Featuring periwinkle blooms of blue, mauve and white varieties with a flushed cotton-pink bud, Moorcroft designer, Nicola Slaney, sought to harness these staggeringly beautiful Victorian colour complexities. As it is a trailing plant, periwinkle is certainly perfect subject matter for a Moorcroft planter. Yellow-green, glossy evergreen foliage rambles in a fanfare of tints and shades of colourful starry blooms and lipped buds: lavender-blue to dark periwinkle; maroon hues of chestnut, fire-brick red to calamine-pink, all contrast against a flurry of the purest-white periwinkle stars nestled between the foliage.

Nicola raises a glass to Applebee’s champagne-pink winter anemones with a design combining their form and colour with contrasting soft lilac-blue anemones.

Applebee’s blue lupin and honeysuckle watercolour was a masterpiece of botanical artistry. Nicola’s rendition of her twining, almost visually-scented honeysuckle watercolour, allows this sprawling, fiery-hued flower to breathe against a pure-white glaze. The flower’s shades of white, cream, lemon-yellow, pink, orange and raspberry red involve a complex application of metallic oxides. With intrigue, the honeysuckle circles the jug with spikes of pea-like blue lupin flowers against a pale ground, adding drama as the lupin’s soft green leaves divide into palmate (finger-like) leaflets.

In Victorian times, when floriography and the language of flowers were hugely popular, people would send irises to their friends as a way to express their gratitude. Here, Nicola Slaney transforms Applebee’s watercolour as fringed irises (Iris japonica) appear like pristine-white billowed sails in the epicentre of the Moorcroft vase, with each flower dappled with deep purple and holding conspicuous honey-orange crests on each fringed fall.

Delphiniums gained the name Queen of the Border since their tall flower spikes make excellent perennial borders in gardens and classic landscapes. The name origin of delphiniums comes from the Greek word delphin (dolphin) due to the flower’s spur resembling a dolphin’s back. Queen of the Border has blue hues hand painted layer by layer, with regal purples, soft cornflower and cobalt blues.

King Charles III has for many years been known to have a personal favourite flower – the delphinium. He is recorded as saying “I have an absolute passion for delphiniums –and I’ve always had it”. Designer, Nicola Slaney, encapsulates his passion in this elegant Goviers exclusive jug featuring a bouquet of delphiniums with some in shades of pure white, and others a soft blue, mauve mix – colours recognised to symbolise youth and renewal.

On the accompanying plaque, Nicola has added white phlox flowers with dark purple centres and pale leaves - a cottage garden plant which sets off the soaring delphinium above to perfection.
