Royse City College and Career Academy Leading the Way!
Steele's Scoop: This year we hosted 33 postsecondary schools, including representatives of our US military, for the 2021-2022 Annual College Fair. Each year in the fall, the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO), schedules College Fairs across the state. Royse City High School has taken part in this long time tradition for many years. Juniors and seniors are able to talk to representatives, get information on the application process, dorm life, and all things college! It is a great opportunity for our students to meet with many different colleges in one setting. For the first time this spring, we will offer a College & Career Fair to juniors, in conjunction with an ApplyTexas workshop! Be on the lookout for dates and times!

How can you help your student? October can be a difficult month for college students, and dual credit is no different. The stress of college courses becomes intense. Assignments and due dates begin to stack up. If students are not careful, the stress can easily become overwhelming. As parents, when we see our kids struggle like this for the first time, we may think they have taken on too much. This is not the time to save them! This is the time to guide and support your child. Teach them ways to manage their time more effectively and help them through the stressful moments. Your child will learn how to become a successful college student and will ease through these times when they are away from the support you provide at home.

Taylor's Tales: Hello Seniors and Parents! We spent this month meeting with seniors and getting those applications for college admission out before the priority deadline. This has been a challenge with the change to the new GoApplyTexas website. I think all the students are finally on the correct site and working hard on their applications. So why the big push?

Remember that applying during EARLY ACTION gives you a jump on the competition. Getting accepted early allows you to pick your dorm and your freshman summer orientation early. Having an early orientation date is important because at the end of freshman orientation is when you will register for your first freshman classes. The earlier you register, the more likely it will be to get the classes and times of your choice. So don’t delay…get those applications submitted! What to expect next? In the month of October, students will be completing their FAFSA.Remember that FSA ID that we requested? This is the time to use it. The window for FAFSA opens October 1st. As you are filling out the FAFSA application, you may consider checking “Work Study” on the application for those of you who will need a job while you are going to school. Living and working on campus can make your life easier, especially if you do not own a car or are attending a college that does not allow freshmen to park on campus.

The biggest question that is asked about FAFSA is, “Why should I waste my time filling out the application if I do not qualify for federal aid?” There are so many other forms of aid that are available, such as grants and scholarships. Did you know that many colleges will not process your scholarship applications without the FAFSA? So let's get it done? For students who need help, we will have college advisors at school October 26th to help you complete your part of the application. For parents, those same advisors will be here October 21st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. If you need help we would love to assist you. Our next step is working on those scholarships...are you ready? There are so many different scholarships that you can apply for, but several are academic based. This means you may want to revisit those SAT and/or ACT scores. If you are unhappy with your score, then you would want to consider retaking it.
