Falling into festivals Canton’s annual Fall Festival was held Oct. 8, with a crowd of young and old joining in celebration of a new season. A highlight of the Festival was Dinner on Main Street. The event was catered by Buttermilk’s. Diners were seated in the center of Main Street to enjoy a dinner under the autumn sky. The children’s area consisted of fall activities including painting, bobbing for apples and bounce houses. Proceeds generated from the Fall Festival will be used for the Main Street program beautification projects. The Canton Fall Festival is a project of the Canton Main Street advisory board. Invasion of the crickets Hordes of crickets hit VZC

A round of calls we have been experiencing, seeing and hearing has been the compliant of multitudes of crickets all around the county. Although the cricket species associated with outbreaks in Texas have not been well studied, most belong to the Gryllus assimilis complex, and are collectively referred to as black field crickets, or field crickets. Biology Field cricket eggs are laid in the fall, approximately two weeks after females mature and develop wings. Firm, bare soil sites are preferred for egg-laying. A single female cricket may lay from 150 to 400 eggs. Eggs remain in the soil throughout the winter and hatch the following

spring. Cricket nymphs can be identified by the incomplete development of the wings. Immature crickets require approximately three months to complete their development and become adults. Once the cricket reaches the adult stage it is capable of flight and mating. Cricket outbreaks occur when large numbers of nymphs complete their development and embark on nighttime mating flights.

Opinion & Commentary
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The article by Pete Marsh on “Surviving the Unfathomable” brought back some memories. When I married, my wife had a 5-year-old son. Together we added 2 girls and later a boy. We had a great family with lots of love and caring. When Eddie turned 16 we gave him our white Ford Maverick. I took him to the auto parts store where he picked out the color he wanted it painted. A friend and I painted the white Maverick using Eddie’s favorite color. It was a special blue and looked great. One night when we were in bed asleep the phone rang. My wife answered the phone. I forgot what she said but she woke me up. She said “Eddie is dead.” I doubt I ever got dressed faster than after that. We went to his apartment. He was on the floor and the police where there. It appeared that he had killed himself but no notes or anything else indicated why. We went to the funeral home to make arrangements for his burial. As we were looking at caskets I saw one that was the exact color we painted his Maverick. My wife agreed that this was the casket he should be buried in. My wife went with the funeral director to make arrangements. I excused myself and went outside. I let my feelings out. I cried so hard I was expecting weather people to issue a flash flood alert. His funeral was wonderful. Family members and friends of Eddie and us attended. My brother offered some gracious comments that made me feel somewhat better. Tragic loss but a reminder that he was loved by so many. I know of nobody who has not had speed bumps, road blocks, and detours in their life. I have been blessed with ability to deal with them. During a crisis I remain composed and strong. When the crisis is over, that is when I let it all out. Too many times this ability has helped me remain me. I know that God is in control but sometimes he needs a little help. He has done that through me too many times. Please Pete. Know that you are not alone. It has happened before and will happen again. Hopefully for others and not for us. May others who experience this loss be strong and continue with their life. Jon Lewis, Canton

Avoiding humongous helpings, measuring success The “eating out” industry is in a contest to see who can sell us the biggest sandwich, stuffed taco, loaded breakfast croissant or biggest helping on the largest plate, platter or basket. It’s OK, don’t get in a twit. There is a solution. Order a glass of ice water with lemon, take out box, and request your meat and baked potatoes be cut in half. If they look at you strangely, tell them your health advisors told you this is what you need to have for your healthy lifestyle. That works in most situations. Here is my helping (portion) system: PALM SIZE: Cottage cheese, eggs, chicken, lean beef and pork, catfish, salmon or shrimp. FIST SIZE: (a bit smaller than palm size) Whole grain bread, corn tortillas, fresh and fresh frozen fruits, root veggies like taters and sweet taters especially from east Texas. Avoid white bread and white flower. Stick with whole grain. TWO FIST SIZE:
Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, green beans, kale, lettuce, peas, squash, onions, tomatoes. My favorite grocery store makes four or more different salads every day to take home. I get three to four servings from each package. Eating salad every day is a good deal. THUMB FULL SIZE: If you are going to eat salad, you just got to have salad dressing, so go for it in thumb size portions. Ranch, mayo or balsamic vinegar is best for you. Here is some more good stuff that are in my thumb full size category: Avocados, olives, peanut butter, peanuts, all kinds of seeds, and nuts, olive oil and canola oil. The experts refer to this batch of my favorite food as good fats. I like to call them the good oil that keeps all my moving parts from rusting. My breakfast menu has been the same for the past two years. I bet it hasn’t varied over 20 times. If it is not broke, don’t fix it.

The Canton High School Band practices during the summer in August, holding summer camps to perfect their Corps style of marching for the next school year. A Corps style band is a type of marching band based on those of Drum Corps International. Notable differences in Corps style bands include the introduction of the roll step, backwards marching and sliding, and the “8 to 5” step size. “We try to implement the entire field when we march,” said Bartley. “The students sometimes “flutter-run,” which is basically running and playing at the same time. It is a high velocity type of marching.” The Canton High School band currently has 102 students who perform during halftime games, in parades and competitions across the state. Recently, the band took home awards from a competition in Mesquite including Best in Class, Best Color guard, Best Winds, and Best Visual. They also finished in second place at the Sunnyvale Invitational and fifth place at the Don Hanna Memorial Marching Contest in Denton. The band’s next competition is on will be this Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Sounds of Fall in Princeton. After that the band has their UIL Contest Oct. 19 in Mesquite.
Taking competitions in stride is just another part of being a member of an award-winning band, but the CHS band also preforms classical numbers like Mozart’s Requiem and Claude Debussy’s Claire de Lune. Whether it be Mozart or practicing for an all-region band contest, the Canton High School Band is in good hands. “It is my job to not only have a successful band, but also inspire the students to have an appreciation of music. Music is a lifelong endeavor that they (students) can take into their lives. Whether that be in a local band or as a band member at a university, music can take them far.” Bartley insists that it is the band students at CHS that really make the department so successful. “What really amazes me about the band kids is that they have amazing work ethic. They are so disciplined in their music. They take responsibility for their part of the band and they execute it well. We have high expectations of the Canton High School band and of the other band programs at Canton ISD as well. At the end of the day, it is not me or the other band instructors, it’s the band kids that make this department so great,” said Bartley.

Let me share BREAKFAST with you: A GRAB of Shredded Wheat (GRAB-Take a handful out of the box and put it in the bowl without spilling.) Then add a smidgen each of frozen blueberries, black berries, and pineapple cubes (smidgen-take your thumb and four fingers and grab.) Add a smidgen each of raisins, peanuts, almonds, and pecans. Then add a half cup of original almond silk. Enjoy. Yum, yum. I am 102 pounds lighter than I was in the 1990s. I drank more water and less sugar drinks until one day I stopped drinking sugar drinks. It took at least 18 months. It was very easy to have a pint of Blue Bell five nights a week. I may have a cup of ice cream once a month. That was a day by day journey. Walking every day has been a habit since June 12, 2006. I could go maybe five minutes without rest. Just a little bit better every day. If I can you can. Be happy and healthy and have fun.
Bartley served under the infamous Rob Toups, who pushed the Canton’s band department farther than it had ever been, claiming numerous titles and championships during his career. In 2014, Toups announced his retirement and Bartley was appointed Canton High School band director. “I worked under Toups and when he retired, I was excited, nervous and most of all grateful for the opportunity that I was presented with. Canton has a unique community that wholeheartedly supports the band department as well as the athletic department,” Bartley said. Interest in the band program starts at an early age at Canton ISD, and the science behind “who plays what,” isn’t that tricky at all. “At the end of fifth grade, students who show an interest in band are put through a testing system. We look at how mouth pieces fit certain students or if they can handle drum sticks for example. By the time the students reach high school, they already have three years of band instruction under their belts,” said Bartley. Being a member of the Canton High School Band is no walk in the park, rather it’s a march through brutal August weather.

Recently there was a guest columnist article in the Canton Herald entitled “WHAT IS A HONKY-TONK ?” The author of the column indicated many people were either to young or had forgotten what a Honky-Tonk actually was. A Random House Dictionary definition was given being “A cheap, noisy, and garish (tasteless) nightclub” to which I agree. I also consulted a 1979 New World dictionary with very similar definition words. I then went to my standard 1828 Webster American Dictionary of the English Language which had no listing for either a Honky-Tonk or nightclub. Thus I assume that the Honky-Tonk came to be called by that name sometime after 1828. I also believe that was the same time the Protestant Reformation was close to its height. I am not that old, but, plenty old enough to remember & to have experienced with regret the noise, drunks, music, fights, & vomit of those places. I believe my age & experience entitles me to add a couple of comments to the Random House definition. They failed to mention it, being the Honky-Tonk, was also known as a home & family wrecker. It was also a place you did not want to be found, if the Lord was to show up. No matter how you dress a pig, or how many times you wash it, nor how thick you put lip-stick on it, the results are always the same, it will return to its wallowing in the mire. 2 PETER 2:22 “But it is happened to them according to the true proverb, the dog is turned to his own vomit again, & the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.” Sooner or latter ALCOHOL & Honky-Tonks always associate with corruption & transgression, VOTE NO PAID FOR BY BUZZY DANIEL

Animals receive blessing The Van Zandt County Humane Society participated in the annual “Blessing of the Animals” Oct. 1. Carol Whatley, president of the organization, was in attendance. “We had such a great time, and the weather was gorgeous. There were quite a few dogs, and a horse named Easter was there for a blessing too. Father Studenny seems to enjoy the celebration as much as we do. He blesses the group and then each animal separately. We took a deaf puppy, Alicia, and the picture shows how she feels. I think we all wanted to kiss his forehead.” St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of all animals; his life is celebrated each year during the first week of October. “Carolyn Davis, of St. Justin the Martyr Episcopal Church, organizes this event every year, and she does a great job. Thank you to Carolyn and Father Ron,” said Ms. Whatley. For information about VZCHS, call 903-962-5700, or visit vzchumanesociety.org.

Wiley announces candidacy for Precinct 2 Constable and myself as his deputy has given me great insight into the duties and responsibilities of the office. I have worked hand in hand with the U.S. Postal inspector and many other agencies in multiple states including Van Zandt County. While Captain of the Van Zandt County Bloodhound Team, I was responsible for leading other members and obtaining results in strenuous situations that lead to the apprehension of criminals and the successful return of missing loved ones to the homes and families. My background and the drive to help people makes running for Precinct 2 Constable a dream of mine since
David Wiley I grew up with the law enforcement experiences of my father C.B. Wiley, who was Justice of the Peace for many years and was the elected Constable of Precinct 2. The long hours and strenuous duties I witnessed my father undertake
as a Sergeant with Van Police Department for 3 years. I then served as deputy to my father in Precinct 2, until his death in May, with over 1000 hours of training as a Peace Officer and Constable. I promise to do my very best to answer all calls as promptly as humanly possible and to help the people of Precinct 2 and Van Zandt County! I will work hard to unify the department, Precinct 2, and the county, all the way to the state level toward the common goal of a safer Precinct in our County. With your write-in vote, I will lead Precinct 2 to its maximum potential!. As a member of the Free Masons, NRA, TSRA, I
childhood. The business and management experience I have garnered from my mother Mary Wiley, while helping grow a successful family business and Van Zandt County staple, Wiley’s Gun Shop, will be valuable when leading the deputies of my office. I have also trained as a Texas Parks and Wildlife Hunters Safety Instructor, Texas Department of Public Safety Concealed Handgun Instructor, and a Texas Board Certified Private Investigator. I graduated from Canton High School in 1982, and completed the Kilgore Police Academy as President and Top Gun of my class. I continued my law enforcement career
believe in our 2nd Amendment Right (To Keep and Bear Arms)! My door will always be open to my office, but you will have a better chance of finding me in your community on patrol since “The Shephard is useless if he is away from his flock.” I believe in common sense justice; I believe in the same Justice C.B. Wiley brought our Precinct. We need more officers in the community making a difference face to face and not from behind a desk. Your Vote matters and remember to WRITE-IN David Wiley for Van Zandt County Precinct 2 Constable. Thank You, David Wiley
Grand Saline student issues terroristic threat By Britne Hammons News Editor A Grand Saline High School student was arrested Sept. 4 for making terroristic threats against the Grand Saline and Van ISDs school districts on a social media site. The male student posted on Instagram, a social media photo application, with the following threat. “Watch out, imma about to shoot up the grand saline school. Van is next. Killerclown.com” The student went under the false name of Steve Sholdings, with the Instagram handle of killer_ clown_gshs. The account has since been closed. Grand Saline ISD posted
a statement on Facebook during the pandemonium that surrounded the threat. “Grand Saline ISD parents and community, Grand Saline Police Department has arrested the individual responsible for the social media threats. We will continue to be on heightened awareness as the state and country continue to experience similar hoaxes. Thank you for your patience and for allowing us to educate your children.” The Grand Saline Police Department did offer an update to concerned parents on Facebook stating, “An arrest has been made for felony Terroristic Threat in reference to the threats against our school. Even though there was no intention on carrying the
threat out we will never take threats against our children lightly. We believe this person has acted alone in their actions. We would like to inform the public that this is happening all over our state and country. Police were in place at our schools and other school districts were notified as well. Police remain in place at our school as we speak. We would like to thank the Grand Saline Independent School District for their support and assistance in this matter as well as the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department.” Grand Saline Superintendent Micah Lewis said that all of the Grand Saline ISD campuses were on high alert but were not placed on lockdown.
Van ISD also issued a response to the incident via its Facebook page, stating “On Tuesday, Oct.4, 2016, we were made aware of a possible threat to our schools through social media. We take threats like these seriously and were in close communication with local law enforcement until the suspect responsible for the threats was taken into custody by the Grand Saline Police Department. This clown hoax is not isolated to our area and has been appearing across the state and country. Rest assured that the safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority and we do not take threats like these lightly. Crickets Fall cricket flights can be a cost for small businesses who lose customers and must pay for cleanup and disposal. The largest cricket outbreaks seem to occur during years of dry springs and summers. The reason for cricket outbreaks under such conditions is not fully understood; however, less fungal disease among eggs and cricket nymphs may provide a partial explanation. Although crickets can be locally abundant in any year, numbers appear to be highest in August and September when a summer drought is broken by rainfall and cooler weather. Damage Field crickets are primarily outdoor insects, and as such are only accidental indoor invaders. Nevertheless, they can become a considerable household nuisance when abundant. Unlike house crickets (the species commonly sold in stores as pet food), field crickets do not breed indoors or establish per-

from 1A manent indoor infestations. Indoors, crickets may damage clothing, drapes or wall coverings with staining from feces or vomitus, or by their feeding activities. Although crickets do not normally feed on fabrics, soiled clothing or clothes stained with perspiration may be damaged by crickets. During severe outbreaks crickets can create an aesthetically unacceptable situation around places of business. Dead crickets quickly pile up, causing odors; and many people are repelled by the sight of large numbers of crickets on walls and sidewalks around offices and stores. Control Outdoor lighting is the most important single cause of severe cricket infestations around homes and commercial buildings. Buildings that are brightly lit at night are most likely to attract the largest numbers of crickets during the fall mat-
ing season. Reducing outdoor lights is the first, and most important, step in a cricket control program. During cricket swarming season, outdoor lights should be turned off as early in the evening as practical, or should be replaced with lamps that are less attractive to insects. Lowpressure sodium vapor lamps and yellow incandescent “bug lights” are less attractive to crickets than standard incandescent, fluorescent, mercury vapor or halogen lights. Floodlights that illuminate homes or buildings, and which are not necessary for security purposes, should be turned off; or the lighting schedule should be restricted to a few hours each night. All potential points of entry for crickets should be tightly sealed. Such sites include door thresholds, weep holes, soffits along the eaves of homes, windows, garage doors, etc. Crickets are especially likely to en-
ter under doors at well-lighted entryways to buildings, as well as cracks and openings around outdoor lights, so check these areas carefully. Steel or brass wool may be stuffed in weep holes as temporary insect barriers, while allowing continued air circulation. Door sweeps consisting of nylon bristles or rubber seals can often be installed quickly and provide a dramatic reduction of crickets entering schools and other commercial buildings. Crickets around building perimeters can be killed with any of several insecticidal baits and sprays. Baits are granular products that include a food that is tasty for crickets. They should be applied to ground covers and other areas where crickets are congregating next to buildings. Baits for crickets include products containing hydramethylnon (Maxforce® and Combat® granular ant and cricket baits), metaldehyde, carbaryl, and propoxur (Larva-
Lur™). Liquid insecticide sprays may be applied to outdoor sites around weep holes, doorways, windows and other cricket entryways. Indoor sprays are not very effective for field crickets and are not recommended. Effective liquid insecticides for homeowners include carbaryl, permethrin, cyfluthrin, and bifenthrin. Professionals should choose microencapsulated or wettable powder-formulated sprays on brick and concrete areas for longest lasting control. Cricket control with insecticides should be considered as only a partial solution to cricket problems. Insecticides should be used in combination with reductions in outdoor lighting for best control. When crickets are drawn to lighted buildings at night, they will continue to cause problems, regardless of the amounts of insecticides used. The heaviest cricket mating flights usually last only 1-2

he Canton Eaglettes took the court twice over the course of the past week, earning a split in matches against Brownsboro and Mabank to move to 2-3 overall throughout one round of District 13-4A
play. Canton hosted the Brownsboro Bearettes Oct. 4 for their annual Dig Pink Night benefiting breast cancer awareness and research. The event, which has become tradition since the arrival of Coach Liz Ramsey, included players and fans wearing pink items as well as an auction with proceeds going towards efforts to fight breast cancer. Once play began, the Eaglettes took care of business to register their second district win of the 2016 season with a sweep of the Bearettes. Play between the two teams was exceptionally
competitive in the first set, with Canton eventually securing a 25-23, one set to none lead. The competitive play between the two teams continued into the second, with neither team being able to shake the other. The Eaglettes eventually got the push they needed, pulling way for a 25-21 set win. Canton put together its most dominant effort of the night in the third set, cruising to a 25-17 set win to close out the sweep. The Eaglettes finished the week with a loss to Mabank Oct. 7, dropping the team to 2-3 overall. Canton was scheduled to wrap up the first round of District 13-4A play in Van Oct. 11 taking on the 4-1 Lady Vandals. Canton is scheduled to continue district play with home matches against Wills Point Oct. 14 and state-ranked Emory Rains Oct. 18. The Eaglettes will travel to Brownsboro Oct. 21 before wrapping up district play at home against Mabank for Senior Night Oct. 25.

Eagles start district with 36-23 win By David Kapitan Sports Editor sports@vanzandtnews.com
Contrasting styles took center stage in Ferris Friday night, with the high-flying Canton Eagles taking on the run-heavy offense of the Ferris Yellowjackets in the District 6-4A opener for both teams. Canton did more than enough to pick up its fifth win over the season, bouncing back from a loss in their nondistrict finale against Paris North Lamar Sept. 23 with a 36-23 win over the Yellowjackets. Play in the first quarter played out a slightly different than expected, with Canton scoring twice courtesy of long runs of more than 50 yards each by senior quarterback Hunter Moore and Ferris registering points on a long passing touchdown. Entering the second quarter, Canton held a 14-6 advantage of the Yellowjackets. Ferris capitalized on a touchdown drive with less than a minute into the frame, scoring on a fourth and one play courtesy of a Damian Edwards touchdown run. Edwards would go on to score on the ensuing two-point conversion, tying the game at 14-14. After trading punts, Canton’s offense went back on the march for another Eagle touchdown drive. Taking possession at the 6:42 mark of the quarter, Canton used two pass completions each to Zach
Brown and Tanner Moore, as well as runs by Dylan Cox to reach the Ferris 4-yard line. On a first and goal to go play, Hunter Moore followed an excellent effort by the Eagle offensive line into the end zone for his third rushing touchdown of the night and a 20-14 Eagle lead. Justin Jenkins added the PAT, building the lead up to 21-14 with 2:35 to play. Ferris responded with a scoring drive of its own to cap the half, marching deep into Eagle territory before being forced into a 23-yard field goal attempt. Ignacio Gomez knocked the ball through the uprights with time expiring, cutting the Eagle advantage to 21-17 entering the half. Defenses dominated the early stages of the third quarter, as both Canton and Ferris were held to quick three and outs before being forced to punt the ball back to the other side. Canton got the second half scoring started on their second possession of the third quarter, getting a big play courtesy of a 40-yard touchdown pass on a screen from Hunter Moore to Dylan Cox for a 27-17 lead. Justin Jenkins added the PAT, pushing the advantage to 2817 with 7:32 to play in the quarter. The ensuing possession by Ferris included plenty of highlights, notably a fake punt on a fourth down and five play to pick up a first down, a big gain on a rushing attempt deep into

Canton and Ferris players look on as team captains take center stage for the coin toss. Eagle territory, a fumble that stunted all momentum for the Yellowjackets and ultimately, a field goal attempt that was blocked by Canton’s McGwire Martin to keep the Eagles in front by 11 points. Canton nearly put the game out of reach on their following drive, using the momentum of the blocked field goal to march into Yellowjacket territory. The drive appeared to hit pay dirt as the third quarter transitioned to the fourth, but the Eagles narrowly missed on a fourth down and 16 pass conversion attempt in the end zone. Ferris responded by utilizing both its passing and rushing attacks, moving deep into the Eagle red zone. The Yellowjackets capped the drive with a touchdown run from Joecoby Woodson, but failed on the ensuing two-point conversion to keep Canton in front 28-23 with nine minutes to play.
Hillsboro and Dallas Roosevelt. The Tigers couldn’t have been more dominant in their game against Roosevelt, lighting up the scoreboard time and time again in a 53-8 rout of the Mustangs. Wills Point generated 360 total yards of offense, led by 150 from senior quarterback Caden Bennett, 95 from Jacob Moore, 77 from Brandon Smith and 74 from Vernon Morrow. Seven different Wills Point players finished the night with a touchdown, including Bennett, Smith, Morrow, Zach McEnturff, Trey Patterson, Sloan Rodberg, and Jacob Moore, who scored two. Wills Point and Canton met last season in the final nondistrict contest for both teams. The Tigers took a 19-0 lead into the half before the Eagles caught fire midway through the third quarter to rally for a 28-27 win over Wills Point.

Canton stood tall against the Ferris challenge, answering back just three plays into their next offensive possession on a 73-yard touchdown strike from Hunter Moore to Zach Brown to re-establish an 11-point Eagle lead. Canton went for and converted the two-point try following the touchdown, giving themselves a 36-23 lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the night. After one week of district play, Canton, Wills Point and Dallas Lincoln are all tied at the top of the standings with identical 1-0 records while Ferris, Dallas Roosevelt and Emory Rains. The Eagles are scheduled to host Wills Point Oct. 14 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Tigers started the year slowly, losing games to Tyler Chapel Hill (26-9), Carrollton Ranchview (29-16), Mineola (36-3) and Tatum (28-9) before picking up back-to-back wins over

inally, we’re beginning to see communities appreciate the heroes who surround us. One definition of a hero is “an ordinary person facing extraordinary circumstances and acting with courage, honor and selfsacrifice.” During the 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, preschool Storytime, Miss Rhonda will be reading Jack Evans books featuring firefighters. The volunteer profile this week is about Jack Evans who watched his wife Susan volunteer and then decided to join her pursuit a year ago. He is a lifelong reader and library patron and felt compelled to help. Jack holds degrees in music, specializing in trumpet, and in accounting/auditing. He also worked in information security at the end of his career. This experience is so valuable as he helps to keep library computers updated each month. Working an average of two hours weekly, he tries to find some time to shelve books also. Not only does he volunteer, but he serves on the Library Advisory Board. Jack’s favorite part of volunteering is getting to see new books as they arrive and working with library staff and other volunteers. The only downside is dealing with the increasingly long times to update Microsoft Windows operating systems on the computers. Thank you, Jack, for giving your time and sharing your expertise in order to keep our library running smoothly. As a reminder of the upcoming Book Fair, Nov.4 and 5. Look in your home library for books that you’re ready to give up and share with other readers. This is the time when the Friends of the Library sells these donated books to fund projects for library improvements. If you are interested in helping to set up for the sale, talk to library staff at the circulation desk. For information about library schedules, upcoming events and other services check the website, www. vanzandtlibrary.org or talk to the friendly staff in the library.
Monkey business at VZC Library There was lots of monkey business at the Van Zandt County Library recently. Ms. Rhonda read stories about monkeys. The first book was ‘Naughty Little Monkeys’ by Jim Aylesworth. These monkeys can’t resist having a little fun. The next book was titled ‘Cha Cha Chimps’ by Julia Durango which included counting and dancing, where hippos hokey-pokey and meerkats Macarena and 10 little chimps do the cha-cha-cha. The last book was based on an old favorite ‘Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed’ by Eileen Christelow which is a play on words from the song ‘Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the bed.’ The craft of the day was a paper bag monkey.
