he Kneeling Soldier bronze statue made its way down Highway 19 to its final resting home at the Van Zandt County Veterans

Memorial. The bronzed statue made its way to Canton Nov. 1, and will take a knee permanently after a Memorial Dedication to be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the VZC Veterans Memorial. The bronze statue has been a work in progress, with artist and sculptor Ed Pickett taking the lead on the project. Pickett began his sculpture with an eight foot Styrofoam and clay sculpture tucked in the corner of the front room of the Savannah Winery and Bistro in Canton. The eight-foot, double body size rendition of Canton solider Juan Herrera is lifelike and precise to the point, to further bring out details in the final bronzing process. Herrera is a United States Army Specialist who served in Iraq and volunteered to serve as the model for the sculpture. Herrera was

photographed kneeling, as if paying homage to fellow fallen soldiers. After Pickett’s part was done with sculpting, the sculpture headed to the Grapevine Foundry for the bronzing process. “Many programs and numerous fundraisers have taken place to help bring this soldier home,” said Vets Memorial PR Chair Diane Farmer. “All of the donations and fundraisers have helped make this project become a reality.” Those who wish to attend are asked to bring their own chairs for a place to sit. First Responders Banquet Approximately 100 tables will be set on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Canton Civic Center for a First Responders banquet. About 500 First Responders will be there along with Van Zandt County citizens and many local and state representatives. All First Responders, retired First Responders, and First Responders who live in Van Zandt County (but work elsewhere), will receive free tickets. Each First Responder will See SOLDIER, 12A

The county chief election deputy anticipates that between Early Voting and Election Day voting on Tuesday, Nov. 8, over 15,000 will cast their votes in Van Zandt County which would be a record

turnout overall in the county. “We are seeing a lot of first time voters during Early Voting and it is always good to see new voters getting involved in the voting process,” said Ms. Smith. Edgewood celebrates 40 years of Heritage Fest By Vy Townsend Malcik Guest Contributor

Growing from a small Christmas bazaar in the 1976 Texas celebration of the Bicentennial, Edgewood’s annual Heritage Festival now brings in several hundred people on the second Saturday of every November for non-stop fun, food and entertainment for every age. The festival, with free admission and parking, will take place this year from 8: 45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Heritage Park Museum of East Texas, located in downtown Edgewood at Highway 80 and Farm Road 859. This year marks the 40th year for the festival that partially supports the Heritage Park Museum of East Texas. A unique feature of the festival is the opportunity to visit the pioneer homes, stores, churches and schools that were once sitting on the prairie near the “Edge of the Woods” town, established in 1878. During the last 40 years, the Heritage Society of Edgewood has purchased, moved and restored these buildings, preserving the past for the future. This year, Edgewood’s first firetruck was found in a pasture with a tree growing up through the engine area. It has been brought to the park for restoration. The Sharecropper’s Cabin is nearing complete restoration and will soon be furnished with period items. What to Watch For PATRIOTIC MOMENT STARTS THE DAY: The day starts with everyone gathering around the flag pole for the Boy Scouts to “present the colors” to the suddenly-hushed crowd, then to sing a patriotic song to kick off the day of festivities under the beautiful American flag. MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC! Strolling around a small town on an autumn day is good for the body and the soul. Live musical entertainment is always a pleasing background and offers a time to sit down, enjoy the breeze and be grateful for the joys of small town life. BAKE SALE: The now-famous bake sale begins when the festival opens and is usually sold out within a few hours. Edgewood women and men work for weeks preparing show-stopping cakes, casseroles for the freezer, every sort of brownies and cookies, homemade breads and beautiful pies from locally grown fruits and nuts. The baked sweets are sold in Gilliam Grocery Store. JAMS AND JELLIES: Those who come to the festival year after year know it is also important to buy their homemade jams and jellies early in the day. Women in the Heritage Society made jars of jams and jellies ranging from Grand Marnier to grape and a remarkable “apple pie” to every sort of combination with jalapenos – blueberry, apricot, peach, -- and well as the pure red or green pepper. The table features tastings on crackers of every jam sold. This year handmade rustic Texas-themed carriers can be purchased to hold two or four jars, making wonderful Christmas gifts needing nothing else but a bow. CLASSIC CARS: The Heritage Festival attracts one of the largest classic car shows in East Texas every year, and the magnificently detailed cars line both sides of S. Houston Street for car aficionados to walk among and swoon over the sleek beauties. A DJ keeps things humming with car songs from the 1950s. Conversations overheard are all about paint, upholstery, spotless engines, the next car show, etc., etc. ANTIQUE TRACTORS: An antique tractor show also makes a big splash with green, red, orange and rusty tractors lined up for farmers to reminisce, and then owners drive through town in a parade with that familiar heh-heh-heh-heh-heh sound that is close to the heart of every person who grew up in the East Texas countryside. The sounds are not far away this year as the area celebrates a good hay growing season. Farmers have barely crawled down from their tractors after cutting, raking and baling big rounds bales of hay to sell and to feed their own cattle through the winter. Visitors to this area enjoy their own farmboy memories as they study the details of the antique tractors

No detail has been spared in miniature homage to life in small towns when the trains were running daily. FUN FOR THE KIDS: Parents and grandparents take special delight in showing their children things they remember from the past. When a break from history is appropriate, children like to take a time out from the past to go to the special play area in the park with they find activities and rides, including a miniature train ride on the streets of Edgewood. ARTISAN EXHIBITS: Throughout the park area, visitors will find artisans who can still demonstrate early American skills: blacksmith, printing press operator, weaver, hand quilter, soap-maker and corn grinder. Guests will see people spinning and weaving, displaying worm composting, showing how to attract bees and butterflies and building fairy gardens. ARTISTS AND CRAFTERS: Many booths will offer the work of arts and crafts artisans as well as painters, wood sculptors and other creative and interesting people to talk with about their work. Christmas wreaths, jewelry, embroidery, vintage linens, knives, clothes and painting and decorator items are only a few of the offerings from the many booth vendors. Local artist Tori Walker designs a new collectible Christmas ornament every year, featuring one of the buildings in Heritage Park Museum. This year, it is Gilliam Grocery and a limited number will be for sale and personalizing. EARLY VOTING Oct. 24 - Nov. 4

THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE

ELECTION DAY NOV. 8, 2016

Dear Voter, I am a lifelong resident of Van Zandt County and have always taken great pride in the area where I reside. Through my work as a County Commissioner, I am able to give back to my county some of what has been given to me over the years. I will continue to use my past business experience to further accomplish the PRIORITIES that I first ran on: 1. LOW TAXES AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 2. ROADS AND BRIDGES 3. LAW ENFORCEMENT 4. REDUCTION OF COUNTY DEBT 5. FULL TIME COUNTY COMMISSIONER. Results: 1. Property Taxes have remained at our current rate for the 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. During my first term we have established an Economic Development Board and have funded it with $228,000 to be used to bring new business into our county. This helps take the tax burden off of the homeowner. 2. When I took office in 2013 our Road and Bridge Material Budget was $69,500. This was the amount I was given to maintain over 270 miles of roads. The roads have been maintained to the best of my ability given the available resources. With hard work and careful attention and dedication we have been able to increase the funding for the upcoming year’s budget. As of today, our budget is eight times greater than when I first began. 3. Over the past four years we have been able to give the sheriff’s department: six additional deputies and two new jailors. The department has also received $400,000 for vehicles. 4. In 2013 when I took office, Van Zandt County was $10.5 million dollars in debt. Throughout my first term we have reduced the debt to $5.9 million dollars. 5. I have been a full-time, hands-on commissioner. I have supervised and managed and worked along with the road crew on a daily basis. I have maintained an open-door policy. I have been hands-on in natural disasters, especially the tornadoes we have battled. Thank you for all of your support over the last three years. I would appreciate your continued support and your vote in the upcoming Republican Primary election. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the Van Zandt County Courthouse (903) 567-7555, or the Precinct 1 County barn (903) 962-3505. Workgroup is appointed State Senate Finance Committee Chair Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, on Oct. 27 appointed a Senate Finance Workgroup on Child Protection to evaluate funding to address the ongoing crisis at Child Protective Services. This followed an interim hearing of the committee, in which members heard testimony on unmet needs for children under the care of the state, and calls for the hiring of more full-time employees to meet those needs. Nelson appointed as members of the workgroup Sen. Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown, chair; Sen. Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury; Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham; Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin; and Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston. “We need a plan that keeps children safe. There is no issue of greater importance,” Nelson said. “This workgroup will re-

view the agency’s request for immediate funding and, in preparation for the next budget cycle, review the agency’s entire proposed budget line by line to ensure that every dollar is being put toward successfully keeping children safe.” “I am very concerned about the welfare and safety of the 511 children we discussed at our hearing, and I am asking for daily updates until that number reaches zero,” Nelson added. School ratings released The Texas Education Agency on Oct. 24 released final financial accountability ratings for more than 1,200 school districts and charters across the state. Some 97 percent of all Texas school districts and charters earned a successful final rating for 20152016. The Texas Education Agency said its rating system encourages public schools “to better manage

their financial resources to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes.” Based on submitted information, a school district or charter is assigned one of four possible letter grades (A, B, C or F) and a financial management rating of Superior, Above Standard Achievement, Meets Standard or Substandard Achievement. According to the Texas Education Agency, all school districts and charters are required to report information and financial accountability ratings to parents and taxpayers. In addition, districts and charters must hold a public discussion or hearing regarding its financial report. The Texas Education Agency formally notified school districts and charters of their preliminary rating in August. Paxton cautions consumers Texas Attorney General Paxton on Oct. 26 cautioned consumers about

the dangers of wearing decorative contact lenses for costuming or cosmetic reasons. “The decorative lenses, also marketed as costume, fashion or colored lenses, pose potential serious risks to eye health, including infections and loss of vision,” Paxton said in a news release. The Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division recommends that consumers: - Always visit a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist for proper fitting of cosmetic contact lenses; - Never buy contact lenses without a prescription; - Buy contact lenses from a seller that requires you to provide a prescription, whether you purchase in person or online; and - Avoid buying lenses from street vendors, convenience and dollar stores, flea markets and novelty stores.

Officials urge state’s high court not to expand same-sex marriage ruling Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week filed a friend-of-thecourt brief with the Texas Supreme Court over issues they say were not addressed in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case declaring same-sex marriage a fundamental right. The three officials asked the Texas Supreme Court to accept their view that Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2015 decision recognizing a right to same-sex marriage “does not resolve all constitutional issues relating same-sex marriage.” The brief points to Parker v. Pigeon and related cases involving a Houston mayor’s extending benefits to same-sex spouses of city employees, and asks that a lower court’s temporary injunction preventing the extension of those benefits be reinstated. “Both the U.S. Su-

preme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit made clear that Obergefell left a host of issues unresolved,” Abbott, Patrick and Paxton asserted. They maintained that “the traditional, Texas definition of marriage” is still in force because “a federal district court judgment against state officials does not amend the Texas Constitution or the Texas Family Code.” Referenced in the brief is Texas Family Code Section 6.204 paragraph (c), subparagraph (2), which says “The state or an agency or political subdivision of the state may not give effect to a right or claim to any legal protection, benefit, or responsibility asserted as a result of a marriage between persons of the same sex or a civil union in this state or in any other jurisdiction.” That section of the law took effect on Sept. 1, 2003.

MY PRIMARY FOCUS WILL CONTINUE TO BE ON FOUR MAIN ISSUES:

PRIORITY #1: LOW TAXES & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE

I will continue to fight to keep taxes as low as possible. The citizens of Van Zandt County should not have to bear the burden of increased taxes. Small government, low taxes and less regulation are necessary to get our county back into better financial condition. I pledge to always lead by example by working with a conservative budget and cut all wasteful spending. To increase our tax base, we must bring a new emphasis on economic development to help create new jobs and more revenue for our county.

PRIORITY #2: ROADS AND BRIDGES As your commissioner, this upcoming year my focus will be on roads and bridges. We will be utilizing the KSA Engineering Report. This report prioritizes the roads in order of greatest to least need of repair. Our precinct has 10 zones and each zone will have work done in order of priority. All tax payers will be able to observe the work being done by their tax dollars. If the worst roads need a total rebuild, then that is what will be done. At the same time, all routine maintenance-patching, mowing, clearing of brush-will continue daily.

PRIORITY #3: LAW ENFORCEMENT

EARLY VOTING Oct. 24 - Nov. 4

ELECTION DAY NOV. 8, 2016

I will continue to work with all law enforcement officers and departments in the county to provide a safe environment for all to enjoy. More officers will be needed as we continue to grow and this will be included in our short and long range plans. Our plans will also include our needs at the jail. As STATE JAIL standards continue to change, we will be required to keep pace.

PRIORITY #4: REDUCTION OF DEBT My priority will be to reduce the $5.9 million dollar debt we currently have by $1.154 million dollars annually. By striving to get the debt to ZERO, this will free up $1.154 million dollars to be distributed among road improvements, the sheriff’s department, and all county services which are provided to the taxpayers.

Martins Mill Parent Teacher Organization raises $50K By Jennifer Fulgham Contributor It was another successful year as the Martins Mill fall festival came to a close. The fall festival has been an annual fundraiser for the PTO for many years, and has always been an event both students and parents look forward to. 3 The parents and community put forth so much effort to make sure this event was a success and this year was no different. Families and faculty filled

the gymnasium Saturday, Oct. 29 to see the coronation, costume contest and get a glimpse of the class baskets available for auction. Afterward, everyone made their way to games where children played and collected prizes and candy. The spook house has always been a crowd favorite, raising $4,374.70, the most of any class booth. During the coronation, the first grade class raised the most money, $6,873.00. Case Lewis and Lakeland Ball were crowned king and queen. For junior high and high school, the sophomore

class raised the most at $5,190.00. The representatives for tenth grade were Michael Halls and Taylor Sparks. The total amount raised during the coronation was $29,863.64. The basket auction this year was just as impressive. Themes such as Christmas, weekend getaways and desserts always bring out the highest bidder. The eighth grade basket which was an outdoor movie night, raised $1,550 at auction. The basket included an outdoor inflatable movie screen, projector, propane heater, chairs and

various movies. The grand total of the basket auction was $9,700. After adding up the booth sales, silent and basket auctions and all other events, the total proceeds from the festival was $50,190.69. After deducting all the expenses, payouts and various programs the PTO pays for throughout the year, the total amount left that can be spent was $25,252.84. The event has been successful because of the community involvement which ensures the children are provided with the best possible education and future.

Rhonda Adams Storytime once a week plus putting a craft together to total about 2 or 3 hours weekly. “My favorite part about volunteering at the library is the kids. I love bringing books to life and watching their faces as I read. The smiles and hugs are the highlight of my week.” Her least favorite part is when the children leave the program to attend kindergarten. After watching them grow from toddlers to age 5, she said she really misses them. Thank you Mrs. Rhonda for all you do, especially for the children, at the Van Zandt County Library.

If your child wants to read to a patient, kind and adorable audience, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 the library will hold Dog Days. Also, this is the last reminder of the Friends of the Library Book Fair. The sale takes place in the Buchanan Room of the library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5. The following donations have been made to the FOL: in memory of George Medley, by Bob and

Sandra Giles and by Dr. John and Barbara Turner; in memory of Jimmy Taylor by Ed Randolph; and in memory of Carmen White by Tom and Sharon Compton. Come by the Van Zandt County Library and check out all the services available. Meet the friendly and knowledgeable librarians and volunteers who are glad to help. In addition, the website www. vanzandtlibrary.org is very informative.

Even though November just arrived we are already busy working on plans for December. Our first event of the holiday season is a painting party with Erin Simmons of Art Studio Painting Parties from Canton. The event will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in the Depot Civic Center at the library. The cost of the class/party is $35. There are a limited number of spaces available for the event so you will need to contact the library to sign up to reserve your space. Attendees are encouraged to bring a hors d’oeuvres to share with the group. Our big event for the holiday season is our Santa visit to be held from 4: 30 to 6: 30 p.m. Dec. 3. Santa will be at the library for pictures. You can bring your own camera and take free pictures with Santa. The Friends of the Library host this event and they will be serving cookies and punch in the Depot Civic Center that evening. This event is increasingly popular each year so we recommend that you try to get here before 6 p.m. because Santa has to leave at 6:30 p.m. so he can leave in time to be the Grand Marshall for the parade. The best part about the holiday season at the library is the decorations. Each year the library works hard to set the mood for the holiday by decorating the library. We hope that you get the chance to stop by during the holidays to see our décor. Just a reminder library cards are available for those who can provide proof of residence in Van Zandt County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 7-17. Regular business hours are Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 903-962-5516 for more information or visit our website at www.grandsalinelibrary.com. Halloween comes to Storytime

There were princesses, a veterinarian, a policeman and even an Indian in attendance at Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library on Friday, Oct. 28. Ms. Rhonda was dressed as a scarecrow and read ‘Eek Halloween’ by Sandra Boynton, whose illustrations are always fun. Another book was ‘The Hallo-Wiener’ about a dachshund in a hot dog costume; this was written by Dav Pilkey who writes the Captain Underpants Series. The next book was ‘Nothing at All’ about a scarecrow. The last book was ‘Room on the Broom.’ The craft was a creepy black spider. Tigers, Bulldogs claim top spots in districts From Staff Reports Van Zandt County football teams continue to make plenty of noise throughout the 2016 football season, with the most recent Friday night wrapping up district titles for both Edgewood and Wills Point and Van taking a giant leap forward at doing the same. Regardless of outcomes Nov. 4, the county will send four teams to compete in the playoffs: Canton, Edgewood, Van and Wills Point. Canton Over the past 15 years, much of the talk about Texas high school football has centered on the proliferation of spread based, pass heavy offenses that makes Friday night contests more closely resemble a 7 on 7 game instead of traditional 11man football. While that may still be the case for many schools, one look at Canton’s 2016 schedule shows that the pendulum could well be beginning to swing back the other direction. The Eagles entered play Oct. 28 against a run-heavy Emory Rains team having already crossed paths with similar offenses in Brownsboro, Mabank, Life Waxahachie, North Lamar and Ferris. With plenty of experience already in tow, Canton did well to fend off a stiff Wildcat challenge on Friday to earn a 40-29 road win, improve to 7-2 on the season (including 3-1 overall in District 6-4A play), and secure a spot in the playoffs. Hunter Moore finished play against Rains accounting for 454 yards of total offense, including completing 20/28 passes for 330 yards and 4 TDs. Moore also carried the ball 26 times, picking up 124 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Tanner Moore finished as Canton’s leading receiver after totaling seven receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Brown picked up three receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown, and Carter Day hauled in seven passes for 61 yards. Canton still had plenty at stake heading into the final Friday night of District 6-4A play Nov. 4, hosting Dallas Lincoln in a game to determine the second seed heading into the playoffs. Edgewood The Edgewood Bulldogs have been among the most pleasant surprises of the local football season, improving to

Brayden Allen of Edgewood turns on the jets without an Alba-Golden defender in sight as he makes his way along the sideline and into the end zone. 8-1 on the season and 4-0 in District 8-3A play with a decisive 38-6 win over the AlbaGolden Panthers on Senior Night Oct. 28. Entering the season, Edgewood had finished a combined 7-15 overall during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, with four district wins between the two campaigns. The contest against Alba was never really as close as the 32-point final margin would indicate. Edgewood took the opportunity against the Panthers to rotate in its full complement of players, giving starters an early night off. Edgewood was scheduled to compete on the road against Winona Nov. 4. Winding the clock forward to the bi-district round of the playoffs, Edgewood, the winner of District 8-3A, would be matched up with the fourth place finisher in District 7-3A. Current standings in District 7-3A show Daingerfield in first with a 4-1 record, followed by Hooks in second at 4-2, Pewitt and Ore City in third at 3-2, and New Diana and De Kalb just outside the playoffs at 2-3 each heading into the final Friday night of the season. Fruitvale The Fruitvale Bobcats wrapped up a strange season on the gridiron at home Oct. 28, falling just short in an 88-72

loss at the hands of Fannindel. The Bobcats began their season a week later than every other team in the county after inclement weather caused the cancellation of the season opener. Fruitvale overcame an early bye week to finish the season with a 1-7 record overall. Against Fannindel, Paul Garner had finished catches for 128 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding nine carries for 59 yards. Garner

capped a busy night by helping to convert five extra points for the Bobcats. Senior Kayle Lewis finished with eight carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, with one reception for a 12-yard touchdown, and also totaled 118 passing yards and three touchdowns at quarterback. Defensively, Payton Thompson finished with 15 tackles, two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery. Coach Casey Chase posted a note on the Fruitvale ISD website noting, “Although the season didn’t go as we had planned, I am extremely proud of the heart, effort, and resiliency these young men showed throughout the season. We dealt with low numbers and severe injuries throughout the season, but these young men showed up to work hard every day and never quit. We showed progress through each game and found some great building blocks for next year.” Grand Saline The second to last Friday night of the 2016 regular season proved to be bittersweet for Grand Saline, with the Indians getting a much-needed 41-34 win over Quitman while also seeing their hopes for a second consecutive playoff appearance come to an end. Trent Easley finished an efficient night under center completing 21/25 passes for 292 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding 16 carries for 89 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Jordan Smith had a monster game in the Grand Saline vic-

tory, catching a game-high 12 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Connor Lowe finished the game with four catches for 85 yards and a touchdown and Chris Wilson finished with two receptions for 22 yards and two scores. Defensively, Sammy Palma and Luis Guajardo led the way with 11 tackles each, and Braven Holden and Judson Truett each registered interceptions. The Indians had an opportunity to finish the season with a .500 record, hosting Farmersville Nov. 4 with a 4-5 record overall. Van After building up a 20-point advantage at halftime, the undefeated Van Vandals withstood a furious second half rally by the visiting Kaufman Lions to move another step closer toward a possible District 8-4A, Division I championship as they outlasted Kaufman, 3314, in the home season finale at Van’s Memorial Stadium. Against Kaufman, the Vandals finished the contest with 22 first downs and 489 yards of total offense featuring 241 yards rushing and 248 yards passing. Quarterback Garrett Moseley accounted for 441 total yards and five touchdowns as he carried the ball 23 times for 193 yards rushing and one TD and completed 11 out of 14 passes for 248 yards and four TD’s. “Garrett Moseley ran and threw the football well,” said Moffatt. “He had some huge runs including some third See FOOTBALL, 2B

Van, Wills Point bumped from volleyball playoffs The field of Van Zandt County volleyball playoff qualifiers was cut down from three to one Nov. 1, with District 13-4A rivals Van and Wills Point edged out of the playoffs by talented teams from Pleasant Grove and Paris North Lamar respectively. Fruitvale, already credited with a bi-district title after a first-round bye, was scheduled to get its first taste of postseason action Nov. 5. Fruitvale Due to a quirk in the UIL’s grouping of 1A and 2A teams for district play, the Fruitvale

Lady Cats entered the season in the unique position of having already qualified for the playoffs in the 1A classification without even taking the court. Fruitvale played host to Eustace Oct. 28 in anticipation of an Area round match against Union Hill Nov. 5. The playoff game between the Lady Cats and Lady Dogs was scheduled to be played in Winona, with first serve scheduled for 5 p.m. Van The Van Lady Vandals entered the playoffs with one of the youngest teams in the area, carrying just two seniors into

bi-district round play after finishing as the third overall seed in District 13-4A with a 5-5 record. Van faced a tough task in its playoff opener Nov. 1, taking on a Pleasant Grove Hawks team that entered bi-district being ranked just out of the top 25 in the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association 4A Poll after finishing as the runner-up in District 14-4A play. Pleasant Grove played up to its ranking against the Lady Vandals, getting off to a fast start and never looking back in a 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 win over Van.

Players suiting up for the final time in a Lady Vandal volleyball uniform included M’Kenna Daniel and Carlie Jarman. Wills Point The Wills Point Lady Tigers are no stranger to upending higher ranked teams in postseason play, having pulled of the trick three times in recent seasons: against Paris Lady Cats in both 2012 and 2013 and Kaufman Lady Lions (in 2014) The Lady Tigers had the opportunity to add another team to the growing list Nov. 1, taking on a Paris North Lamar

team that entered the postseason with a sterling 30-6 record overall this season and a 14th place ranking among all 4A teams in the state according to the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association Weekly Poll. Despite some gritty play, Wills Point could not get over the hump against the Lady Panthers, falling in three sets: 25-10, 25-20, 25-18. Players suiting up for the final time in a Lady Tiger uniform included Kamree Clark, Gaby Gonzalez, Kelsey James, Darya Ross, Emily Smith and Hannah Wright.

Defensive statistics from the Kaufman game were recently released by the Vandal coaching staff and the numbers included: Cooper Bledsoe, 13 unassisted tackles, nine assisted tackles, one fumble recovery and one interception; Sam Reeves, eight unassisted tackles, five assisted tackles, two tackles for losses and one fumble caused; Jake Kellam, seven unassisted tackles and three assisted

Wills Point Wills Point has shown plenty of resiliency throughout the 2016 season, bouncing back from an 0-4 start and season ending injuries to multiple key contributors to run off five consecutive wins and claim the top spot in District 6-4A. The latest chapter to Wills Point’s story was written at Forester Field on Friday night, with the Tigers facing off against a Dallas Lincoln team that entered play with an identical 3-0 record in district play. Down a quarterback due to an injured ankle suffered by Caden Bennett near the final stages of Wills Point’s 21-7

win over Emory Rains Oct. 21, the Tigers got a solid performance under center from junior quarterback Tyler James in a 24-22 come from behind win over Lincoln that wrapped up the top seed in district play. Tyler James completed 11/18 passes for 136 yards, including a touchdown and an interception. Brandon Smith finished with 19 rushes for 102 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and four receptions for 68 yards in the receiving game. Nathan Johnson tied Smith for the team lead in receptions with four, totaling 42 yards and scoring the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to play. Defensive leaders for the Tigers included Sloan Rodberg with 16 tackles, Tyriq Burnett and Trey Patterson with 11 tackles each, Ben Bradshaw with nine and Justin Edwards and Emmitt Eckler with eight each. Edwards finished with Wills Point’s lone sack, while Rodberg forced two fumbles, and Burnett and Bradshaw caused one each. Wills Point was scheduled to be home Nov. 4

Hunter Moore had a hand in all six Canton touchdowns during play against the Emory Rains Wildcats Oct. 28. for a game against the visiting Ferris Yellowjackets. VAN ZANDT NEWS

HERE’S HOW TO PLAY In each advertiser’s space on this page is the name of two teams who will oppose each other in the coming week. You should circle the name of the team you believe will win in each ad. The person selecting the most correct games will be the winner. Winners each week will receive $50 worth of coupons redeemable at participating merchants’ stores or payable on bank loans only with participating banks. The coupons cannot be exchanged for cash or deposited as cash. Entries must be in Van Zandt News offices in Canton or

Wills Point by 4:30 p.m. Thursday preceding the games. In the event of a tie, the “Tie-Breaker” game will decide the winner. Correct winning team must be selected and person closest to winning margin is the $50 in coupons winner. In the event of a tie on the Tie-Breaker, the $50 worth of coupons will be divided equally among the winners. Limit two entries per family per week. Multiple entries must be submitted separately. Employees of Van Zandt Newspapers, L.L.C. and their immediate families are not eligible to participate.
