SUPERSTAR POP PARTY

On Saturday 5th October 2019 at The Auditorium @ M&S Bank Arena

S

uperstar Pop Party is bringing the music of three of your favourite Pop Superstars to one show! Little Fix are the number one tribute to super group Little Mix. Voted the UK’s best tribute act in 2017, and stars of BBC 1’s Even Better than the Real Thing hosted by Paddy McGuinness, Little Fix have firmly established themselves as the most accurate tribute to Little Mix on the market. Replicating the vibrancy, stage presence and vocal abilities of Little Mix along with stunning stage outfits, Little Fix present the groups biggest hits such as DNA, Shout Out To My Ex, Black Magic, Wings and many more with identical choreography and vocal finesse, ensuring an amazing party vibe. PLUS, this fantastic show features Ami performing as Ariana Grande, and Jack Sheppard as Ed Sheeran!

6

Ami is the world’s best look-a-like and sound a-like to Ariana Grande. Her vocals are on point, and her image and mannerisms are outstanding. Ami delivers authentic versions of Ariana’s greatest hits, including One Last Time, Thank U, Next, No Tears Left to Cry and Bang Bang. Jack Sheppard is worldrenowned for his purist tribute to Ed Sheeran. He uses the same guitars, a custom-made loop pedal, refuses to use backing tracks opting to perform all songs live just as Ed does, and is even the same height and shoe size! Jack has performed on the BBC, ITV,

Capital FM and Kiss 100, and faithfully performs Ed Sheeran’s greatest hits to great acclaim. This high quality, fun, energetic show suitable for the whole family comes to Liverpool for a matinee performance on Saturday 5th October, and is sure to delight Superstar Pop fans of all ages!

WHAT TO DO

THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS ARE SORTED WITH THE ROUGH GUIDE TO ACCESSIBLE BRITAIN

W

ith the summer holidays finally approaching, it’s time to plan some great days out for the whole family to enjoy with the help of the Rough Guide to Accessible Britain.

8

It wouldn’t be summer without a beach day with the entire family. Cornwall’s Summersleaze Beach is the perfect place for a swim with a part-natural, part-manmade “sea pool” and is a favourite for surfers too. Big Blue Surf School runs tailored sessions for people with special needs and adapted boards are available for those with physical disabilities, including the option of a “tandem board” and ride with an instructor in tow. If you’d rather sunbathe, sand wheelchairs are

available for hire from the Summerleaze Beach Office throughout the summer, and there are numerous beach huts with full access too. Marwell Zoo, Winchester is a wonderful wildlife park, with enclosures designed to be as close as possible to the animals’ native habitat. With hundreds of species to see around the 140acre park, all the viewing platforms above the animal enclosures are wheelchairfriendly so guests can get stunning views. The zoo also lends out manual wheelchairs, and can provide a downloadable sensory trail mp3 for guests who are blind, with hearing loops available too. Set in a beautiful pine forest in the Cairngorms National Park, Landmark Forest Adventure Park is

a paradise for kids who’ll have fun exploring the park’s numerous accessible activities and rides. Highlights include the fully accessible Treetop Trail through the forest canopy and the Wildlife Feeding Area where visitors have a good chance of spotting rare red squirrels and beautiful forest birds. All the trails through the park are wheelchair accessible, with wheelchairs also available to borrow at the main reception. The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain offers days out reviews and details of physical access to facilities as well as information for visitors with less visible conditions such as autism and mental illness. The guide features a number of family friendly locations that are perfect for summer holiday outings. Official launch of second Silk Rd in Liverpool Silk Rd is the north west’s newest and most exciting dining out sensation. Their latest opening was at Hope Street in Liverpool recently and we went along to try out the cuisine that everyone’s talking about. A dining experience at Silk Rd is a genuine journey of flavours from the Pacific to the Mediterranean brought about from the owner's own personal travels on this ancient trail. All the food is freshly cooked by skilled chefs with the aim to deliver a WOW on every dish. And they certainly did.

CAN YOU HELP?

M

erseyside Dogs Home has been running since 2013 since the closure of the RSPCA Kennels, MDS along with Dogs Trust is the only rehoming centre within Liverpool’s boundaries. MDH rehomes exclusively within the Merseyside area. Since opening MDH has rehomed around 4000 dogs and like everything demand comes in peaks and troughs – we never know when there will be a surge. Due to the work we do many dogs will come to us with multiple problems both health and behavioural. Every dog is examined by a vet and any dogs that need extra support arising from poor ownership will spend weeks sometimes months with our behavioural experts. We strive to find EVERY dog a forever home. For example, just last week were a couple of Staffordshire bull type puppies who came to us. We named them Bonnie and Clyde. Only a few

months old both with fantastic temperments and both heart breakers. Unfortunately Clyde came to us with an infection in his eye and as it had been left untreated, unfortunately the eye had to be removed. Again, like people dogs overcome adversity and will always fight back fit and well with the help and support of a loving rescue centre. These puppies have already been reserved and we are 99% certain we will find a home for Peggy sue. Some dogs come to us without a story lots of them are already in the twilight of their lives but our ethos is that everyone deserves a chance. Sometimes it is more challenging to find them a forever home.

To make sure we continue year on year to be here for Merseyside’s dogs we need local support. The cornerstones of our funding are monthly donations and corporate sponsorship. We also fill the voids with street collections and regular events. This is why we are shouting out to local companies with a view to supporting us and any members of the public who could jump on our website and make a monthly donation would be appreciated too at https:// merseysidedogshome. org/get-involved/supporta-dog/

LIVERPOOL PREPARES FOR THE ‘MANE’ EVENT WAR HORSE JOEY VISITS CITY AHEAD OF SHOW’S RETURN

J

oey the lifesized horse puppet from National Theatre’s acclaimed production of War Horse visited Liverpool ahead of the show coming to the Liverpool Empire Theatre at the end of the month. Joey made an appearance at Liverpool Central Library in the morning to say hello to fans from schools across the city before heading out in the afternoon to visit some of the city’s most iconic sights.

20

Pupils from St Nicholas, St Vincent De Paul, Pleasant Street and Ranworth Square Primary Schools were let in on some behind-the-scenes secrets from Resident Puppetry Director, Gareth Aled before Joey trotted in to the library’s Discover room to meet them all.

War Horse, the unforgettable theatrical event based on his beloved novel, will return to play the Liverpool Empire Theatre from 31 July to 17 August.

On his travels, Joey even lent a hand to some friends from Merseyside Police’s Mounted Section and joined them on patrol in St George’s Quarter. Police Horses Silver and Jake welcomed Joey and posed happily for photographs to celebrate the show’s return to the city and to raise awareness for the Stand Tall Foundation, which raises money to support the fantastic work of the Mounted Section.

Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship, about a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War is the most successful play in the National Theatre’s history. It features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage.

his year is really flying by .. and I’ll be counting sleeps until Christmas before I know i. It’s been another whirlwind of a month, which saw my brother Mark marry his beautiful girlfriend Gill at the Vincent Hotel in Southport. It was a lovely day – made even more special by the fact we managed to get mum there which completed a truly wonderful occasion.

It was also my month of birthday celebrations – from Cher Tribute acts in The Hungry Monk in Southport, to a house party at my best mate Dale’s (who I share the same birthday with!) there has been a fair amount of partying which will probably take me until next year to recover!

24

I was also incredibly proud of the youngsters from

LHK Entertainments who performed “The Greatest Song” at The Epstein – I am so proud to have directed this show, along with Alan the MD and Michael Jones choreographing it – they were absolutely amazing and received a well deserved standing ovation for it! I can’t wait to work with them again on “Grease” for which rehearsals have already started. One of my favourite events of the whole year is the St Helens & Knowsley Hospitals Awards at the M&S Bank Arena – celebrating all the amazing work of the NHS staff a who deserve every accolade they receive for the work they do. It was also one of the most humble evenings of the year at The Hilton hosting the Y—Kids and Cash for Kids Believe Awards for the 8th year running. I’ve yet to get through the evening without almost having a break down crying hearing the stories of the youngsters who

are so selfless, brave and courageous and showing adults that children really are the future. It was an added bonus to find that my nephew Zack Dowling had won an award for the amount of money he has raised for charity and I was so proud to see him up there with the other outstanding winners.

I was stunned and delighted to receive a nomination for a Positive Award .. and blown away with the response it received. As much as my life looks amazing on social media sometimes behind closed doors its very different – I think people were shocked that my life isn’t always a fairytale and hopefully if me sharing my story can help even one person to focus on positivity then I’ll be happy.

JOANNA LEIGH HEWITT Liverpool actress and model Joanna Leigh Hewitt is in Hollywood, California pursuing her dream, having written, starred and produced a movie, Cherry Pie and I with fellow actor and friend David Mullenger, which will be released in then Autumn.

She chats exclusively to Lifestyle magazine…. What is its premise? Joanna: It’s all about following your dreams, falling in love with yourself and not being afraid of being who you where born to be. It follows a man on his journey through life going day to day not following his passions until he meets Hollywood Sweet Heart Cherry Pie who "opens his eyes" to a more beautiful life. How did you meet? Joanna: We met on a gin commercial David: Joanna would follow me everywhere until I agreed to be her friend. How could I say no? Joanna: Ha, really? The truth is that David has been in love with me since that commercial and has been so desperate to work with me that he came to my house and sang “Joanna” from Sweeney Todd 26

repeatedly.. I had to agree to make him stop. How did the film come together? Joanna: I love to write, I am not the type of person to sit around and wait for work so I created it. I contacted David and suggested we make a film together. David: Joanna called me out of the blue just at the time I decided I wanted to work with someone . It’s just meant to be. What are your hopes for the film? Joanna: I have a lot of faith in the film and David, we’re thinking Netflix, the cinema… amazon David. Let’s put it on Netflix.. I want to reach as many people as possible as it touches important subjects that need to be highlighted.

How difficult was it for you both to break into Hollywood? Joanna: I am / have been auditioning for some big films and TV series in Hollywood this year, Im really exited for the rest of this year, Something big is coming I can't tell you just yet you will have to wait and see. Joanna and David in discussion: Joanna: Its not difficult, its a never ending journey, like everything else. I like to enjoy the journey it makes everything worth it and possible. David: Yeh, agreed There is nothing you cant achieve if you put your mind to it. We are on the road to success. Joanna will appear at the Los Angeles Lifestyle Showcase in September

HOSPICE ENJOYS WEEKEND BONANZA OF SUMMER EVENTS

S

t. Joseph’s Hospice in Thornton recently hosted four-days of events which raised £1000s for the hospice. The hospice’s annual Garden Party and Volunteer’s Evening were joined by its first ever Gin Evening and A Rose to Remember summer in-memory service and afternoon tea. The hospice thanked 140 volunteers and community groups for their continuing support and presented certificates to each and every one. The event saw the hospice gardens packed with artisan stalls, games, crafts, activities, food, drink and live entertainment from Asa Murphy and the Mad Ukes ukulele group from Maghull and District. Norma Young, head of fundraising at St Joseph’s

Hospice, said: “We’ve had a fantastic run of summer events over the last week and it’s been wonderful to see so many people on site, enjoying our beautiful gardens over what was a beautiful weekend weatherwise. Our Volunteer’s Evening started with a little drizzle and few brollies but the sun soon came out and lasted for the rest of the weekend.” “We’d like to say a really big thank you to all the businesses, individuals and community groups who have supported our summer events this weekend by attending, donating or

volunteering. We couldn’t have achieved any of this without their support.” If you’d like to organise an event to support the hospice, we can help. Please contact the

am Stephanie Ward, psychotherapist, I help people to remove the burdens of the past, and any emotional baggage they have been carrying around after toxic relationships. Sound intense?

I guess this is the thing about reaching out for a little bit of mind work. It has always been perceived as intense, taboo, and played out in secret? We work hard to make our bodies look perfect, yet we heavily neglect the most important part of us; where the magic takes place, our mind, our souls. When will we start shouting from the roof tops that we are happy to be shedding our old selves and battling our inner demons? You know LOVE is one of the most profound emotions known to human beings. We need it, we crave it. We sing about it. It cripples us when we lose it. There are many kinds of love, but most people seek its expression in a romantic relationship with a compatible partner, pinning our hopes and dreams on one person..and I’m here

to remind you that loving YOU, is what will set your world alight! You are that person.

Through healing, and self work, there is no limit to just how fabulous, Radiant and ALIVE we can be. That being alone can be absolutely amazing! Failed relationships happen for many reasons, and the failure of a relationship creates chaos in every area of life. It’s something we all have in common. None of us are immune to heartache. Most people have to work consciously to master the skills necessary to make relationships flourish, because the person they are is a reflection of their parents, their childhood, their peers. Their first relationships, their trauma. There is a TRUE you beneath all of those beliefs and hurt, dying to get out and live in her most powerful self! You just have to make the decision to heal! When trauma has shaped you, try not to confuse who you had to become, with who you can be.. nobody glows better than someone who has let go of the pain! Always here xx

LJLA’S MUST SEE VARNA HOT SPOTS!

Sunshine and warm winds from Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast aren’t the only things to make the ‘Black Sea Pearl’ a hot spot for travellers. Liverpool John Lennon Airport has picked out some of the must see attractions in this top summer destination. Founded by the ancient Greeks, Varna is dubbed the Black Sea Pearl for its long and vibrant history. Today, it is Bulgaria’s largest seaside resort and with a calendar packed full of cultural events, Varna has a lot to offer visitors. VARNA’S SEA GARDE A trip to the maritime capital of Bulgaria would not be complete without a visit to Varna’s Sea Garden. The park is the largest landscaped garden on the entire Balkan Peninsula, stretching 7km, making it the perfect route for a relaxing walk in the sunshine or even a scenic bike ride. Look out to the beautiful views overlooking the sea and lush greenery while you stroll and stop at restaurants and cafés regularly placed in the park. There are also sweetcorn vendors available and a small amusement park for children, making it ideal for a family day out. 32

GET CULTURED AT THE CATHEDRAL To fully embrace the culture of Varna, take a trip to the ‘Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral’ in the centre of the city. The grand building opened on 30 August 1886 and is one of Varna’s most iconic structures. It is the second largest Bulgarian Orthodox Cathedral in Bulgaria following one in the capital city, Sofia. GOLD OF VARNA If you’re looking to take a break from the heat, pay a visit to Varna’s Archaeological Museum. One of the largest museums in Bulgaria, it features objects from prehistoric, Greek, Ottoman and Roman eras. Most notably it is home to the ‘Gold of Varna’ which

is almost 7,000 year old Thracian Jewellery that was discovered in the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis, just 4km from the city centre. The pieces of gold are the oldest gold treasure in the world and are a must-see if you like the finer things in life. BEACH DAYS The beaches in and around Varna are different hues of yellow and gold with soft fine sand which is ideal for walking on, sunbathing and playing. The heat reaches its highest in July and August with daily peaks of between 25°C and 35°C, the perfect temperature for relaxing beach days. Flights to Varna began on 17 July 2019 with flights three times weekly over summer. LIVERPOOL RESIDENTS AMONGST UK’S MOST “CHILLED OUT” TRAVELERS WHEN ABROAD •

UK parents feel relaxed on holiday 3 hours and 18 minutes EARLIER than non-parents

UK’s Most Stressed Out Travelers Revealed, with London and Manchester holidaymakers taking the longest to relax

Over half of British holiday makers (55%) continue to watch their favourite TV shows whilst on holiday

21% of Brits will continue to respond to their work emails whilst on holiday

It takes British holidaymakers almost two full days into their holiday to feel fully relaxed, according to a recent study by family travel expert Tots to Travel. By asking 2,000 British holidaymakers to pinpoint the moment they feel relaxed when they travel abroad, the investigation found that the average British tourist takes 46 hours and 42 minutes to fully get into the holiday spirit. When it comes to getting into holiday mode, women seem much more adept at leaving their stresses at home than men, stating they feel fully relaxed after 42 hours and 24 minutes of being on holiday, which allows them to enjoy 9 hours and 6 minutes more of their holiday than their male counterparts. 34

Travelling with children may seem like a daunting task, however whilst those without children may worry about the stresses of taking children on holiday, parents actually take 3 hours and 18 minutes less to feel fully relaxed than those without children. Looking at tourists across the country, Sheffield holds the most relaxed tourists whilst those from Manchester seem to take the most stress with them when they jet off on

holiday. Holidaymakers from the Steel City take only 32 hours and 48 minutes to fully relax on holiday, whilst Mancunians take a full 54 hours and 54 minutes before they can do so. One key factor in relaxing on holiday is removing ourselves from our day to day lives and fully embracing a break from our routines, however the study shows that a large number of holidaymakers are struggling to do this. Over half of British holidaymakers continue to watch their favourite TV shows whilst on holiday, preferring to know the latest news from the Love Island villa or catching up with Corrie than enjoying the holiday scenery. And whilst it may be tempting to relax in front of your favourite entertainment on holiday, a more worrying trend shows that 21% of holidaymakers continue to do work whilst on holiday.

ugust is the time when so many of us pack up in search of sun, sea, peace, quiet, cocktails, and mostly not having to cook for a week. Research has found that the most common vacation stressors are related to pre-travel and planning such as money, packing, travel arrangements, and travelling with children. But some also have stressful experiences during the trip such as worrying about the weather, traffic jams, flight delays, arguments with partners, and transport issues. Which indicate before we even leave the house we are already stressed Clearly, while many people see taking a vacation as a way to rejuvenate and beat ‘everyday life’ stress, traveling and vacationing, can also be stressful for a lot of people. So how can you beat it? What can you actually do to make travelling less stressful and actually enjoy it?

36

Figure out what your stressors actually are, write

Themindsetmovement@hotmail.com

them in a list and then one by one ask yourself ‘how can I reduce this?’

www.themindsetmovement.co.uk

This doesn’t mean that you are anticipating stress, and it isn’t a bad thing, stress happens, this is purely a way of being aware to what’s making you feel stressed with the aim in reducing it before you leave. Money is one of the biggest stressors in life and on holiday it’s so easy to get carried away spending without thinking about costs So pick a budget that all parties are comfortable and happy with and make your intention to stick to it. Finally, when we get knocked out of our everyday routines we can feel quite stressed, even though we book holidays as a vacation away from our lives. The way to combat that is to not have to leave

your routine completely. If you run every morning, still run. I you like a morning coffee in silence, find a way to do that. If you have to check your emails, do that. Find a compromise with routine that makes you happy. Finally breathe, relax, and enjoy.

romatherapy is the systematic use of plant oils known as essential oils for the treatment or prevention of disease. It is a form of complementary therapy designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptom or disease by assisting the body’s natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself. Essential oils are the fragrant, highly concentrated natural constituents that are found in plants. They are what give the plant its characteristic odour and contain the healing power of the plant from which it was extracted. When used correctly, essential oils bring a wide range of health benefits. I understand from a health perspective, the effect every day life has on us, the impact of man-made chemicals, the air we breathe, lack of nutrition and exercise and most importantly our state of mind. Working towards a holistic, whole approach on

ourselves is detrimental for our future health and wellbeing. Understanding one of the most powerful tools in any treatment is the safe use of natural, plant based oils, with the therapeutic effects of aromatherapy oils - Which is why we have created Buddha Balm, so we can share our carefully selected blends we have been treating people with at Buddha Therapies, over the past 10 years, so you can enjoy them in your own home, at work, or out and about - Tracy McMahon . Brookbank & Mellor. Brockbank & Mellor is the latest addition to the cities bustling Seel Street. Opened last month by owner David Wood the bar & restaurant is set in the Brockbank and Mellor building, which it takes its name from. The building dates back to 1872 when it was the site of wine merchants.

40

of July will be a restaurant opening from 8.30am, specialising in small plates. “I wanted something that felt accessible to everyone,” said owner David Wood. When I sat down with our architects, Snook, the vision was to work with the history of the building going back to its days as a wine merchant. See facebook.com/ BrockbankandMellor/ for more details. The Victorian facade remains. Inscribed above Kersh Kicks. the windows is “Brockbank and Mellor”, late-C19th wine merchants. The split-level venue takes its inspiration from the industrial warehouse its set in, with concrete-steel-glass the theme throughout. The main bar area downstairs can hold 400 people and features a striking steel bar on entering. Upstairs there is an 80-cover dining Kersh Kicks open their area which is open now for flagship sneaker store in Manchester’s creative drinks and from the end

Northern Quarter. The brand has been created by brothers Sam and Ben Kersh. The new store designs will reflect the brand’s commitment to sustainability within an intimate, personal and architectural atmosphere. Sam Kersh, aged 24, began to source rare trainers (sneakers) during his time based over in California State whilst playing University soccer for CSULA. Sam commented “My passion for sneakers/ trainers led to me sourcing one pair, then a couple of pairs for friends. It just grew from there. In LA the sneaker scene is huge and on my return to the North West I set up a partnership with my younger brother Ben, who has just finished Uni in Manchester. It’s been quite a journey and we are now close to opening our first store.” For more info please see – Instagram @kershkicks

Cra ig’ s Mon tlhy Tip

We lco me Life sty le Rea der s...

Hello Lifestyle readers,

Decking stain

I hope you are all enjoying jetting off on your summer holidays or indulging in some R&R in the back garden. July was fun and games for us at the Dream Build as we have been busy tackling the always tricky task of laying decking!

Maintaining your wooden decking boards at least once a year will not only extend the life span of the decked area but will make them look like new again. So now the weather is (supposed-ly)changing for the better and you want to spend more time outside there’s no better time to get the stain out!

In typical British form, the weather didn’t play ball and we were subject to lots of rain which made the installation particularly difficult, but we are nearly there with it and it’s looking great. Huge shout out to the guys at Eurocell for providing the materials and helping me with the task. Be sure to keep an eye out on the Mr and Mrs DIY YouTube channel as I’ll be uploading a how-to video in collaboration with Eurocell very soon. In July we took Nelly, who is now four months old, for her first swim at David Lloyd something she found a strange experience at first, but it wasn’t long until she was smiling and splashing her arms around. We want to take her swimming once a week so she doesn’t grow up fearing water – plus we joke that she will hopefully become an Olympic champion as a result. The month also marked a milestone in Nelly’s development as she sat up on her own for the first time! Laura and I had been giving her more floor time in the hope it would encourage her and during her baby sensory learning class she finally did it. Next step: to master crawling. A look ahead of August and there is lots going on including the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship, a golf event I take part in every year. I will be playing in the Celeb-Am element of the event and this year I’ll have Nelly and Laura cheering me on from the side-lines! Be sure to read next month’s column to see how I do out on the golf course. For those of you who already have decking and just need to give it a spruce up for your summer garden parties, check out this month’s DIY tip on staining. All the best, Things you will need:

44

Jet wash/ hose

Sander

Electric paint station

Before you start, begin by cleaning the decking down with a jet wash or hose making sure you get inbetween all the grooves if you can and then leave to dry. You can even give the wood a light sand down as this will help remove any flaking wood or uneven areas. Looks can be deceiving when it comes to decking with many areas being larger than they seem. Some can take days to stain using just a paint brush which is why I’d recommend investing in an electric paint station. This will speed up the process significantly and also give you a more profession-al, even finish. How does a paint station work? Well it consistently applies the stain at the right speed and allows you to continue painting from one end to the other, leaving no steaks – it also distributes the right amount of stain leaving you with little wastage. All you need to do is apply the roller to the surface, as you would if you were using a standard hand roller, and go with the grain of the wood which is normally the way the grooves are cut out of the decking planks. Once the whole area is complete, leave to dry for a couple of hours and repeat the process with a second coat to ensure a thorough finish.
