owner of infrared Sauna Spa talks about the latest health phenomenon sweeping the city with the infrared Sauna Spa infrared Sauna Spa 2 childwall valley Road childwall fiveways liverpool, l15 6yB 0151 306 2705 What attracted you to Infrared Saunas? hi, firstly, i would like to say a big thank you for choosing us to interview today. The first attraction was the amazing benefits that infrared Saunas have to offer. i was fortunate enough to have used one quite some time ago, then i was obsessed! Could you tell us about the benefits and what the difference is between an Infrared Sauna and a Traditional one? a traditional sauna works by pouring water on to hot coals to make steam, the steam heats the room to 100+ degrees. as the room is so hot and humid when you are in there the skin has no choice but to produce water 2
to cool and protect its self. our infrared saunas work by the user being surrounded by nano carbon plates which omit infrared light, the light penetrates deep into the body and warms the body’s core, so in an effect warms from the inside out. as the body’s core temperature increases the organ temperatures increase this instance being the heart, as the heart temperature increases so does the rate which encourages more oxygen being taken in to the body and as the blood circulates through the heart it is warmed and oxygenated which helps improves circulation, lowering blood pressure, gets us burning calories and increasing our metabolism. as the now warm,
oxygenated blood circulates the body it travels to all the muscles which as we all know helps them recover from injury and fatigue, so it is a natural pain relief. You mentioned pain relief, so people don’t just come to burn calories? Burning calories is just one of the many benefits, and as for pain relief, we have lots of people who suffer with fibromyalgia, and it really does appear to be helping, helping people with the pain relief and relaxing the muscles. we have people who have Eczema and Psoriasis and as the infrared sauna thoroughly cleans the skin people have said it really does help in managing the conditions.
A little birdie tells me you are planning to open a second shop, how is it coming along? ha, i guess it is no longer a secret, we have agreed terms, designs are completed and it has been given the green light. we are opening our second facility towards the north end of the city, and we could not be happier. Why do you think it has been successful? honestly, it is the infrared technology, the benefits really do work, and we strive to give an exceptional, personal service and we are keeping the prices very low, it is £10 per 30 minute session whereas a place down south charge £47 per 30 minutes. The benefits are too good to have it only to be used by a select few who could afford that. it is our ethos. Why have we not seen these across the country? i would say that people do not know about them, it is massive in la in america, the a-listers such as, Madonna, Jennifer anniston, gywenth
Paltrow & lady ga-ga all rave about them and use them in their everyday lives, and what we have done is brought it over here to liverpool, the hollywood of the uk. What has been the highlight in the short time you have been open? we were contacted by channel 4 asking if they could film as part of a series replicating the gywenth Paltrow diet. it was so exciting being filmed and we will be making an appearance on channel 4 in the new year, so be sure to tune in guys!
Where can people find you and find out more about the Infrared Sauna Spa? we are based on the childwall fiveways Roundabout on Queens drive, you can also visit our website, www.infraredsaunaspa.co.uk or call us on 01513062705.

OLLY MURS a n o P E n a i R c o n c E R T aT h a y d o c k Pa R k R ac E c o u R S E SATuRDAY 11TH AuGuST 2017
Your new album ’24 Hrs’ is your 4th consecutive number 1 album that must be a great feeling? olly: amazing. i’m very proud of that you know to have 4 consecutive number 1 albums is brilliant. i never expected in my wildest dreams that i would’ve got this far so, absolutely delighted that we’ve managed to get 4 consecutive, like you say, number 1 albums it’s really really amazing so thank you. amazing. What do you reckon has been the appeal of your music and yourself to make you the most successful male artist to ever come from the X Factor? olly: i dunno, i’d like to think that i’ve done some great songs and, think people love what i do… i just don’t give anything, i mean this album’s probably the most heartbreaking, most honest album that i’ve done but i think with previous albums you know i have a lot of fun, my album’s are happy and people enjoy listening to them and with this album in particular it’s still happy, still got lots of that vibe on it. its just luck you know that people like me and people have bought my albums and i’m very lucky that they do because it doesn’t always happen like that so i’m very very grateful.
10
You mention this is your most honest album to date, do you feel you are constantly progressing as an artist and songwriter through your albums? olly: yeah 50/50 i mean, i did run out of ideas, i wanted to do something different and i felt with this album i just didn’t know where to go next. what i was gonna do? i felt like writing about what’s been actually, genuinely happening was the right thing to do. i’m just really happy that i did this album and the fact that it went to number 1 and people really like it. at the start of the year i was like ‘what am i gonna write about? what am i gonna do?’ and i’m really happy that i did this honest album, i’ve always been an artist i’m just writing about what i’ve wrote on every album that i’ve done, i wrote most of my hits so this album was just an opportunity to do something different and to keep my fans interested and show them a different side to me and i’m really happy and proud of how well it’s done and i can’t wait for people to hear the second track from the album next year with the other single that we’re gonna release it’s exciting. Is there a particular track on this album that you’re most proud of you, that you really want people to hear? olly: i think ’24 hrs’ and ‘flaws’ are the two songs on the album that i’m really proud of because for me ’24 hrs’ the song was something else, a different song that i’ve never done before, production wise and the feel of the song, but also ‘flaws’ was, i feel like one of the best songs that i’ve written with the guys that i wrote with. it was really sad but i think you have to listen to the songs really to kinda get the idea of what i mean but i love writing really happy feel-good songs but at the same time i mean it’s nice to show people a different side to me and show some emotion and that’s what this album was about. You’re undertaking a massive headline arena tour in March, and obviously in the summer you’ve got a huge run of outdoor shows that will see you come to Haydock Park Racecourse on the 11th August, how
do they vary in terms of what you put into them and what you get out of it, from the indoors to the outdoor? olly: i think it’s fun, it’s really fun being outside and you know the show that we’re doing at haydock Park is a different gig for me, i’ve never done anything like this before, i’ve done racecourse gigs before in the past but not this sort of size and i’m really proud to do it and it gives me the chance to go to different places in the uk that i haven’t been before, do different kind of shows, do something slightly different. i can’t wait i mean, what’s better? go to a racecourse, i can go there during the day i can, have a little flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the evening. Perfect. How do you go about choosing your set list? olly: it’s gonna be difficult, you know five albums but you’ve just gotta play the hits and the songs that people know; that’s what i’ll do with the set make it as entertaining as possible. i’ll throw in a few covers there as well, have a bit of a laugh with the fans and it’ll be a really fun day out and i promise any fan that comes along, it’ll be a right laugh from the start of the day to the end of it and i promise to make sure everyone goes home happy having had a good time. Have you got ay kind of pre-stage ritual that you do before you go on? olly: Me and the band have a little huddle up before the show and we sing one of our songs, well not a song, a song that we’ve got as a team and we’ve been doing it for the last six/seven years so it’s a bit of a ritual but i’m sure we’ll be sinking a few shots before the show as well just to get into the racecourse spirit. You’re going to be playing Haydock Park in the north-west, which is essentially settled in between Liverpool, Manchester, Warrington and Wigan and right beside St. Helen’s. Residents come to these events because it’s an opportunity to see an artist like you on their doorstep, there’s always been fantastic reactions at the courses to

I’ve never done anything like this before

the music nights. olly: for me it’s just great to be involved and, like i say i can’t wait to get go out to see all the fans it’s gonna be a great one and i’m sure i’ll have a massive hangover at the end of it but i’ll enjoy it. hopefully it’s a lovely day weather-wise, hopefully it’s not too wet and people have a really nice summer and really enjoy it. It must be great being able to get out and play to your fans, essentially in their areas without them having to travel a few hours into a major city olly: These are shows you get to see the real people; they are days out, family days at racecourses it’s slightly different you know. over the years i’ve done loads of different festivals, all these commercial festivals that people go to every year, i just feel like going to a racecourse is so different and people get to see a different vibe, different set, different sound and you get to see different people. you know, there’s some of these people that come to the racecourse who are people that maybe have never been to a music festival
before so, it’s nice that, i just thought its refreshing for me to do a gig like this. i mean i’m really looking forward to having a day out with my mates at haydock Park racecourse as well as everyone else and then at the end of it, get up and sing an hour, an hour and a half, two hour show whatever it is and just have some fun and have a great night. Residents come to these events because it’s an opportunity to see an artist like you on their doorstep, there’s always been fantastic reactions at the courses to the music nights. olly: That’s the great thing about doing these racecourse events it’s about going to different parts of the country, different areas that necessarily other artists might not have been to for a while or for someone like me, i haven’t been to the areas in a long time so it really gives the people of these areas that go to these racecourses a chance to come and see me because they might not come to the arena tours so, it’s good to come and bring the show to them. for me it’s just great to be involved and,
like i say i can’t wait to get go out to see all the fans it’s gonna be a great one and i’m sure i’ll have a massive hangover at the end of it but i’ll enjoy it. When you go out on tour playing these types of shows, do you get to see much of the locality? olly: i haven’t been to many racecourses over the last few years as i’ve been so busy but i love the atmosphere, i love the people, you got out there and put a few bets on and the only problem for me on the day of these racecourse gigs is not to be drinking too much! So i’ve had a few little sly beers, the atmosphere at a racecourse is great; it doesn’t get much better in the summer. if you’re a fan of my music or not a fan of my music, it’ll be a fantastic day out and i look forward to putting show on, i’ll make sure everyone goes home happy and have a good day. RENOWNED FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER AND CONTEMPORARY ARTIST SHOWCASES NEW COLLECTION AT LIVERPOOL GALLERY
C elebrated fashion photographer
and contemporary artist, Raphael Mazzucco, made an appearance at liverpool’s castle fine art gallery last month to showcase his new collection, Exposure. The church alley gallery is castle fine art’s first site in liverpool and joins its portfolio of 34 galleries across the uk as it continues its rapid nationwide expansion. Mazzucco’s appearance was the first event to take place at the gallery and forms part of castle fine art’s year-round programme of exhibitions and exclusive events. guests had the opportunity to speak to the artist about the inspirations and ideas behind his new body of work. Many months in the making, Exposure is a series of printed paintings capturing the female form. it saw Mazzucco collaborate with canadian artist, oly Bernardi, to adopt an entirely new technique, transforming a container into a dark room to process each image. gordon farmer, gallery manager at castle fine art, liverpool, said: ‘’our first event at the gallery was fantastic. Raphael charmed all of our guests with his larger than life personality and his beautiful art works.’’ 14

£27M BOOST FOR CITY FROM I T S C U L T U R A L O R G A N I S AT I O N S A new report reveals that Liverpool’s cultural organisations generated around £27 million pounds for the city in just one year. The report looks at 36 cultural organisations in the city which are funded through the city council’s culture liverpool investment Programme (cliP). It found that: • arts organisations generated £27million into the city from a wide variety of local, national and international sources. This includes attracting millions of visitors and inward investment. • an impressive 29,840 cultural activities took place in the city from 2015/16, with 66% of this activity targeted at special groups – young people, homeless, veterans etc. • at least 4.6 million people attended funded events and festivals (broken down as 2,916,331 for events and 1,748,942 for festivals). • More than 258,000 people took part in cultural activities. • The funding enabled the organisations to raise an additional £15,140,917 from public and private sources. • organisations reported their activities achieved a huge array of social impacts and benefits – for example improving the lives of those experiencing homelessness, worklessness, long-term health issues or poor mental health. young people with experience of the criminal justice system showed that those taking part in cultural events became more engaged in community, school and home life. The report provides case studies giving evidence of cultural activities which have taken place 16
and the impact of these activities. These include: • Transitions – a programme by collective Encounters, which used theatre to enable 55 adults with experience of homelessness, mental health challenges and addictions to achieve nationally recognised qualifications. • The comedy Trust’s Stand up to Stigma gave people accessing mental health services the opportunity to hone their comedy skills and developed their confidence to perform in front of an audience. • Metal’s Meanwhile Space helped improve both the community spirit and physical environment of liverpool’s Picton ward by engaging residents of all ages and backgrounds to make a decision on the future of a disused green space. • around 250 disabled young people took part in young dada fest – a weekly theatre and music workshop developing their creative and artistic skills. The sessions gave young disabled people the opportunity to socialise and take part in art which was relevant to them. as a result, some of the young people involved began to work directly with the council’s children’s and young People’s service to advise on issues such as marketing campaigns. • fact’s veterans in Practice saw veterans meet every week to work on film, web, app or performance projects. This was accessed by 40 veterans ranging from 20-90 years old, developing their skills and giving them the confidence and self-esteem to take on new challenges. The programme also fostered a greater understanding and inclusion of veterans in the local community. The full report can be found at
www.cultureliverpool.co.uk/impactre port. Mayor of liverpool, Joe anderson, said: “This report acts as a reminder of the hugely important role culture and the arts plays in the life of this city, both for residents and visitors. “we know about the economic boost generated by the sector, but what’s more important is the positive, priceless impact on the day-to-day life of residents and their communities shown in this report. “here are 36 examples of how continually investing in culture can result in unparalleled improvements in people’s health and wellbeing. at the same time it succeeds in generating pride among those who live here and showing the world that we are an ambitious, creative city which will always push boundaries and always have social justice at our heart.”
The 36 funded organisations are: 20 Stories high, africa oye, Black-E, Bluecoat, Bluecoat display centre, Brouhaha, collective Encounters, The comedy Trust, dada fest, fact, first Take, homotopia, hope Street ltd, lantern company, liverpool arab arts festival, liverpool Biennial of contemporary art, liverpool carnival company, liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, liverpool irish festival, liverpool Philharmonic, liverpool Pride, look, Merseyside dance initiative, Metal culture, Milapfest, open culture, open Eye limited, Pagoda arts, Positive impact, Squash nutrition, Tate liverpool, Royal court Theatre, Tmesis, unity Theatre, windows Project, writing on the wall.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
SIMPLY BEING
STEVE after decades of relative obscurity, Steve carell burst into hollywood at the forefront of the silver screen’s finest cadre of funny-men. now, after trying his hand at a string of dramatic roles, the unendingly affable star is returning to a very familiar character. after 15 years as a jobbing actor, Steve carell’s breakthrough – in the fine form of 2003 will ferrelfronted hit anchorman – shone light on a comedy mind who had, up until that point, been criminally underrepresented on the big screen. over a decade later, and carell’s career has never seemed better, and even a surprise sideways move into darker dramas resulted in an academy award nomination for 2014’s foxcatcher. “foxcatcher was probably at the 18
time, the scariest role i'd ever taken on and probably remains that way,” laughs the 54-year-old.
of the world. i find more of myself in him, and him in me, than i'm willing to fully appreciate.”
“That was the first time that was the moment i decided, ok, i like the trepidation, i like being scared. i like feeling that this could potentially fall completely flat. if it doesn't, it feels like a huge achievement and accomplishment, that there is the only way to exercise the powerful rush of the job.”
one of the more recognisable elements of carell’s depiction of his hook-nosed alter ego is his nasal accent. carell explains that, while nowadays it seems second nature, the work behind-thescenes was extensive, and faced an unlikely source of scrutiny.
This is, of course, carell in a nutshell: almost impossibly likeable, and undeniably talented. with his oscar nomination giving credence to his popular position in Tinseltown, it’s time for the Massachusetts-born star to get back to his comedy roots with not one, but two, starring roles in the third instalment of the despicable Me franchise. as loveable super-villain gru, carell’s despicable debut at the turn of the decade has since become a modern animated classic – attested by the rise of bright yellow Minions across the world, and at the helm of their very own spin-off feature. This time carell is getting ready to return to gru, but there’s also the addition of the lead role’s brother, dru, to contend with. “where gru is dour and broken but his heart is there, i raised dru’s voice half an octave higher to symbolise his jolliness and general joyous demeanour,” he enthuses. “i'm more gru than i realised, with my pessimistic view
“i tried out a bunch of voices on my kids first, being the target audience,” carell explains. “i had a whole combination of accents and dialects going on - Scottish, albanian, Peruvian, and australian. whatever the combination of gru – vaguely Eastern European, a little bit of here and there – that one made the laugh the most. But they are brutal critics; worse than my wife. if they don't like it, there's no massaging the response.” and even though carell’s already conjuring storylines for a fourth instalment of gru’s journey – “Maybe a baby?” he winks – this is certainly one star of the silver screen who isn’t about to be taken in by the tempting enthral of the industry’s bright lights and red carpets. “never ever have i cared about any of that; family has always taken priority for me,” he beams. “as long as my kids love these movies, that's good enough for me. and with these films, i like the energy they put out into the world. i think we need gru and the Minions now more than ever.”

Family has always taken priority for me

FIVE MINUTES WITH...
DONNA GOODWIN
Donna is the only
independent female family, civil and commercial Mediator from wallasey on the wirral. She recently helped anthea Turner during her divorce and now chats to lifestyle magazine about her experience
INTERvIEW WITH AMANDA MOSS
What do you do? i am the only independent Mediator on the wirral. Some people go to a lawyer who is appointed to a practice but i am completely independent which puts me in a good position. Because i can support any business with issues such as workplace disputes, medical negligence, personal injury and self referrals from the pubic. 26
local counsellors, doctors surgery’s can also refer into me. i help resolve conflict, be it on the family side, for example with child access issues, divorce, financial matters or civil where it could be a conflict dispute with an employer, a bullying issue at work or a dispute with a neighbour or a family over a will. i also offer dispute resolution with commercial disputes such as businesses and directors. Personal or business conflict can be very stressful, i take that away by being impartial and working towards each parties needs in a positive way. Why use a mediator? a Mediator is the first port of call for conflict and dispute resolutions. it is the best way to go and find help to resolve the issue before it gets to court. Everyone thinks they will get their day in court but they don’t .The judge doesn’t want to see you. court costs to the state with legal aid having been reduced due to Mediators. The government has seen an opening to reduce these costs. in the last two years people who have failed to use a Mediator have found that their case goes against them. Mediation costs are a third of solicitor’s fees; the outcome is your solution that you are happy with. What is your background? i left school always wanting to be a lawyer but i decided to study to be part of the financial
services industry and did a financial services degree. i have had different jobs across a broad spectrum of the commercial world; i am also a qualified Therapist and life coach so all that vast experience is reflected in my work as a Mediator benefiting the clients. How did you meet Anthea Turner and help her? i met anthea through working in entrusted circles and she got in contact with me. we have remained close ever since and i helped her with her book. How do you differ from a counsellor? counselling is different. as a Mediator you cannot be seen to empathize with one side, a Mediator needs to know when to refer to a specialist, professional who can help in other areas of the client’s lives. Is your job satisfying? yes it is. i have two children myself and have been through a divorce, they have come out the other end, but divorce is hard. it affects everyone including grandparents; my family could be on better terms if we had had a mediator rather than building up arguments for the court, which could have been avoided. This is one of the reasons i help other people with their lives today. ENTERTAINER
JAMES ALTON A ward winning James alton,
(stage name “Jamesy”) 30, describes himself as unique person and all round showman. having a string of television appearances behind him, he is now about to set sail on a cruse ship around the world in his dream job as an Junior assistant cruise director with the entertainment team. he chats to lifestyle magazine about his life and how he has turned his life around. if you’ve ever had holidays in the uk you’re likely to have bumped into him.
"i have always known i wanted to be on the stage. as far back as i can remember i wanted to make people smile. i got a magic set when i was very young and i would go to nursing home and entertain the residents and staff. and i would put on puppet shows for my brother and his friends. Then i moved into school productions; i was in everything! when i left school i became a red coat at Butlins in Skegness and then a stripy at John fowlers in Somerset. Most recently i have been playing a dame in many different touring pantomimes. This inspired me to create a comedy character called Mrs Plonker who is actually based on my aunty Elaine. when we went to the pub men would ask her name and she would reply, “i’m Muriel Plonker.” i thought this had potential to develop into a comedy sketch and so Mrs Plonker was born. She talks about her passions and her crazy family. for ten years i was on and off benefits but i have been working really hard to get off them. one day my friend suggested i should entertain on cruise ships, it was something i have never thought about, but i looked into it, applied and then was recommended to speak to someone within the cruise 28
industry and i got an interview. it has been a long process and i have had to speak to several people, have many interviews but i have passed every stage and now i am just waiting for my flight to los angeles to be confirmed and i will be joining my ship any day now. i have worked hard for it and i can’t wait. i am passionate about making people happy, when i see them smile it makes me feel good. i actually auditioned for the x factor this year and i got through to meet the actual judges. They were really nice to me and told me to go on the cruise ship. Sharon told me i was born to entertain and that if i had this job on the cruise ship, then i should go and see the world and enjoy my life. So i am taking her advice! i won the cvh first class awards
for Mr Personality last year which was a huge honour im doing all this and more for my mum and i dedicate it all to her. She’s always been there for me and supported me through everything she’s my Rock i want to look after her now like she has looked after me all these years. i have appeared on television a few times, i have worked with alan Titchmarsh who was very flattering, i was on channel 5 and most recently on BBc3. Producers are always saying i have got it in me and i have got what it takes and as long as there’s a stage, be it for 50 people or 5000 or on television in front of millions, i am happiest when i am entertaining. i have heard there’s a Tv studio on board the cruise liner which i am very excited about. all i can say is watch this space”.

WITH SUMMER ONLY A LIGHT BREEZE AWAY, THE QUINTESSENTIALLY ENGLISH BEVERAGE PIMMS OFFERING A FAMILIAR TASTE OF SUMMER. Here’s the perfect recipe: 1. Fruit Fusion don’t overload your Pimms with fruit. instead, pick a few strong flavours that complement each other. an unusual flavour combination that works well is Pomegranate and Basil. alternatively, take your Pimms to super food heights with the quirky addition of trendy acai berries. 2. Herbal Remedy if you’re using herbs such as basil and mint, crush the leaves before adding them to your drink. This will maximise the aroma and leave your Pimms perfectly seasoned. 3. Cue the Cranberry Those with a sweet tooth might like to add a splash of cranberry juice, or opt for flavoured lemonade for an extra boost. 4. Ice, Ice, baby get creative with your ice by freezing flowers into your ice cube tray. however, try to limit the ice to a few cubes to ensure the Pimms isn’t too diluted by the time it comes to drinking it! 5. Sugar-coat it Sprinkle a little lemon juice and sugar over the fruit before you add them to your drink. let the fruit pieces stand for ten minutes so they macerate and then add them to the liquid at the last minute, to save them from going soggy. ME HAPPY Ex girl band member and now solo singer lauren Sidwell chats to lifestyle about what Makes Me happy What makes you happy? My family and friends are what make me happy, there's not better time than quality time with them. But the best thing for me when i'm performing is seeing the crowd sing/dance along and just having a ball! There's nothing better than performing to a group of people who are genuinely excited that you're excited, it makes my job so easy and enjoyable. When did you discover your love of singing? i've literally been singing since i was five. i used to put on shows for my family in the living room at every family event. at the age of 11 i sang 'The way we were' acaprella in the liverpool Empire Theatre and before that i had never had a singing lesson. What is the dream? My dream is quite simple- i just want to make a living doing what i love and entertaining people.
Everybody has got things going on in their life so when i am hired to do an event it's important for me to uplift those people and make them feel free for a few hours. Why is it so important to you to perform? Because performing is literally who i am. i've never known any different. without singing/performing i wouldn't know what else i would be doing What inspires you to sing? i'm a fan of all music genre's, literally i can listen to anything and i think my love for music is what inspires me. i admire all instruments and all vocal abilities so being able to deliver songs to an audience and putting my own spin on it is the best feeling ever What is the nicest compliment anyone has paid you? when i was 16 i played the lead role in 'faME' the musical, and a few days after it had ended i was in Superdrug in the city centre, and a woman came over and asked for my autograph as she had been to see the show with her daughter and said i was going to be a future star. That was really nice, specially with me being so young at the time!
times. But being in the group also gave me so much knowledge and experience that i didn't have previously and i met some amazing people along the way! i love all the girls i was in the group with and i still keep in touch with them Is there anyone who has mentored you and who has inspired you? our band manager Miguel doforo was inspiring. he has an amazing work ethic and his achievements so far are very applaudable. i'd also say that my college mentor Becky hannon inspired me- co-owner of the photography company dollworx. her vision and creativity is amazing! What gigs have you got coming up later in the year? well i have just got back from performing at a wedding in Marbella, that was an amazing experience! My plans for the rest of the year so far are local restaurants, bars, networking events and weddings. i'm also currently in talks on working with a Motown producer to be featured on a new track of his. Exciting year ahead!

Do you write your own material? yes. i have written about six songs. all inspired by personal experiences and emotions. i have to really be in the zone to write my own material. Your girl band split up, is it difficult being in a group and what challenges did you face? it was difficult, purely because the group of girls were so talented and so going from having all the limelight to yourself to sharing it with 3 other girls was challenging at 35

NOVOTEL hanover Street liverpool REviEwEd By aManda MoSS
L ifestyle magazine was
invited to spend the night at novotel. The popular city centre hotel is always full at weekends so it’s important to book in advance. My friend had travelled up from london and we planned a busy two days in the city centre. it’s perfectly situated, just a ten-minute walk from liverpool lime Street and set conveniently in the heart of the city centre around restaurants and bars and of course liverpool one shopping centre across the road. we checked in after 2pm as requested and set off on an adventure round the city. we walked from the shops to the albert dock up to Pier head and back across town through the shops again to the hotel. By the time we returned in the early evening we were ready to relax in the swimming pool and steam bath. while there are no spa treatments available, the novotel is one of only a few few hotels that offer this service and it was delightful. we ate in their restaurant: Ropewalks. we were offered a Scouse cocktail which was absolutely gorgeous and hit the spot. The bar and lounge area is a great meeting place for people after work and a
great place to unwind. we shared a nacho platter to start with with some additional garlic bread. all nicely presented and more importantly, piping to and freshly prepared. not a hint of a microwave in sight as can be the case for some hotel kitchens. we were pleasantly surprised by the meal; i chose a chick pea and butternut squash korma and my friend had sea bass on a mountain of fluffy mashed potato,
again served at the correct hot temperature. our twin room was clean and tastefully decorated in an inoffensive mix of browns and whites. The bathroom was a decent size too, my only criticism was the lack of pillows - one per bed! at home i sleep on at least four! a quick call down to reception rectified that and we settled down for a comfortable night’s sleep.

liverpool as we know is on a roll – i think its an exciting place right now but something needs to be done about the people begging. Especially in the daytime. There is a policy in liverpool called ‘no Second night out’ the homeless do not need to be on the streets but there is another problem….i went out with the Paper cup Project who work tirelessly to help people on the streets. Speaking to them they didn’t recognise most of the people begging in the daytime, because a lot are bussed in and it really is organised crime. we are not the only city that has this problem but something must be done. if you have the answer ring me on Radio city 2 - 5 nights a week from 10pm.

Coronation Street actress Claire King is highlighting the plight of our elderly. with 37% of carers (1.4 million people) in the uk are living in poverty, and 48% of the carers recently surveyed by carers uk are cutting back on essentials like heating, claire talks about her experiences of caring for her father claire is best known for her iconic role as kim Tate in Emmerdale and governor karen Betts in Bad girls and is currently playing Erica holroyd in coronation Street. however, your readers might not be aware of the role she plays when away from the cobbles – that of caring for her elderly parents. during carers week 2017 recently, claire is shining a light on the financial challenges carers face and looking at the modern inventions that can help to improve their lives, and the lives of the people they care for.
CLAIRE KING 40
claire has cared for her father who has been in a wheelchair for twenty years and has also been a carer for her elderly mother. She has experience of the financial difficulties that taking on a caring role can entail, and can talk knowledgeably about the worries that carers often face (unexpected bills or budgeting for energy use).
What is the hardest part of being a carer? The hardest part is the long hours, because it’s not a 9-5 job. My father for example needs turning over in the middle of the night, and that sort of task means disrupted sleep for the carer.
Claire King is best known for her iconic role as Kim Tate in Emmerdale and governor Karen betts in bad Girls. She is currently playing Erica Holroyd in Coronation Street. but away from the screen she has also played an important role, caring for her elderly parents. Can you tell us about your personal experience of being a carer? Twenty years ago my father was diagnosed with MS and my mother with rheumatoid arthritis and i started caring for them running errands, going shopping, cooking and sorting out finances. These days my father is bedridden and needs 24/7 professional care, so my brother and i tend to help out more with the financial side, whether it be helping with the bills or just
it’s also hard juggling all the finances that go with it, and trying to save money in as many ways as possible. what with expenditure on cars, wheelchairs, hoists, larger energy bills, the extra costs of caring can be enormous. i know from experience that taking on a caring role certainly increases worry about bills, particularly heating. This worry can be compounded if you are on a prepay meter, as many carers are. not only do you have the additional worry of running out of credit and the electricity suddenly going off, but you may also have to leave the person you’re caring for alone while you go to the shops to top up. however, there are some things that can make life a bit easier, such as smart meters, which are a particular blessing for those who prepay for their gas and electricity and who might be managing a tight budget. Is caring a rewarding role? it is a rewarding thing, to see those people who you love dearly having a quality of life that they wouldn’t necessarily have if you weren’t there. What are your tips for carers? There are a lot of useful new innovations that weren’t available when i started caring for my parents. a smart meter would definitely have helped – i have
one now and it’s great. you can get one from your energy supplier for free and they have lots of extra benefits, particularly for carers who are prepay customers, or who care for people on prepay meters. for example with a smart meter it’s easy to top up your credit via an app, online, or on the phone, meaning that you can top up quickly and easily for yourself, or top up for the people you care for, without having to go out to the shops. you can also see exactly how much credit you have left on a handheld screen, making it easier to keep track of what you are spending, very useful if you’re managing a tight budget. one other thing i find hugely helpful are accessibility apps – accessibility is a particular problem for wheelchair users like my father, but apps such as it's accessible, list places that are accessible to people with mobility issues. These would have been particularly useful to me when caring for my father - my parents like to go to the horse racing and out for lunch occasionally, so we used to have to find numbers and ring around to ask about suitable access. now it's all at your fingertips. The huge amount of online money advice services available these days, such as energy advice websites and budgeting apps and blogs, would have been a huge help to me in terms of money management and taking advantage of the discounts that are available.

LIVERPOOL SPORTING STARS our teens are racking up more medals than ever. here are some of liverpool’s finest sporting superstars - ones to watch for the future. colin and christine Smith of wavertree, liverpool couldn’t be prouder of their son Tyriese and daughter T'neesha-Benét who are hoping to compete at international level. colin said, "as parents, we have always agreed that - along with manners and common courtesy, one of the most important life skills that a child should learn is how to swim.children around water who think they can swim often has a negative outcome and we did not want to be worrying anytime our children were near water. So, from the age of 3 years our children attended swimming

We will always encourage and support them in achieving their goals

lessons and over the following two years it was apparent that they enjoyed it and the swim teachers asked if we would consider joining a local swimming club as they saw their natural talent & ability. at 9yrs of age, T'neesha-Benét began competitive swimming and was asked to attend trials at city of liverpool Swimming club at 10yrs of age and commenced training with them. T'neeshaBenét has always looked up to aliyah atkinson of Jamaica. over the next few months, she would talk everyday about her coach dave - how great he was and she began medalling/achieving personal best times at competitions gaining 6 qualification times for the lancashire county competition, along with winning
Micro league Top girl." Tyriese left swimming to play football - although he continued to follow Michel Phelps but a club sent a text asking us to 'beg Tyriese to swim' for them in a competition as they did not have enough swimmers. our concerns were that Tyriese had not trained for 12 months but they said that his natural abitlity would see him through it after 6 weeks of minimum swimming training with a club (twice a week due to his football training), with no expectations upon him, Tyriese entered the wirral Metro christmas meet and successfully gained a lancashire county Time for 50m freestyle. he then asked could he swim for liverpool and after attending trials for city of liverpool Swimming club began training
with them - dave being his and T'neesha-Benét's coach was able to make training fun but serious and tap into their strengths and develop their weaknesses whilst keeping that fire & interest burning inside them. To date, having had coaches as dave & ian and currently Pete & Mike both Tyriese and T'neeshaBenét continue to train representing both liverpool city and Bridgefield Swimming club. They train at liverpool aquatic centre is where they train which is local and easily accessable to us - and as parents we work shifts to enable us to fit around the children's training/competitions.we obviously had reservations when they began training in a morning before school having to wake up at 5am, would this affect their school work, would it affect their
mood, would they be tired during the day - but to their credit both Tyriese & T'neesha-Benét have coped really well - but its important that they have a 'recovery' snack after training then in bed by 9pm without phones, ipods and ipads! - (the only issue we had with the school was Tyriese did not take his school bag on a number of days and the school made a big fuss over it saying it affected his education and a school rule is that pupils should be prepared to learn and to attend school with all items in a school bag!!!!!) whilst in Swim Skills squad at liverpool, Tyriese had improved so much that he was invited by the head coach to attend city of liverpool Swimming club's annual swim camp in february 2017 in Majorca.we are very, very proud of them and their achievements - in training, in competitions, in their rankings, even if they get dQ'd in a race the way they cope with the disappointment is credible and they can still learn and improve from it. Swimming is such a disciplined sport - both in the pool and out of the pool and being with their friends they have made/their peers at the club really has been a contributing factor in the way our children have matured and conduct themselves. for both Tyirese and T'neeshaBenét, their sights are set on achieving qualifying times for the nationals, then they would love to progress and eventually participate in the commonwealth & olympic games, if not for Team gB then for Jamaica...They are still children and we will never force them to train/compete but we will always encourage and support them in achieving their goals.”
SAXON BLACKMOSS 16, is showing promise as a professional boxer. he started training with Rotunda before moving to the Solly in Everton for the last three year. he was introduced to the sport by his dad, Simon, who wanted him to be able to fitter and more confident. his mum, amanda, had reservations about the sport. She said, “i don’t like violent sports but i have been completely educated into how fantastic boxing is as a contact sport. it instills discipline and manners in the people taking part. They are very fit and it also has encourage their natural competitiveness which means Saxon has wanted to do well in his school subjects as well. Saxon is very dedicated to boxing, he trains four times a week and watched his diet to ensure he doesn’t consume too much sugar in order to maintain is light weight for fights. Saxon has so far won all three fights that he has participated in with his club. Simon added, “we would love him to take it up professionally for a few years as it could open up so many opportunities for him. he’s definitely got the skill to go far."
COUN TD OWN TO LI VERPOO L RACE START TIMINGS REVEALED!
A
ugust see the start of one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, further details for the week of festivities and timings for the highly anticipated Clipper 2017-18 Race Start, taking place on 20 August, in Liverpool have been revealed. clipper Race founder and chairman Sir Robin knox-Johnston said: “for the majority of clipper Race crew members, who have come from many different walks of life, the clipper Race journey began a year ago or more when they first applied to take part so with less than 50 days to do before the Race Start, you can really sense the excitement building amongst everyone. liverpool is an incredibly proud and vibrant community and we have had fantastic experiences here in the past which is why we were so keen to return. There will be plenty to see and do so we hope to everyone join us once again and help make this another truly memorable event for the city, and our crew and supporters.” The 20 august Race Start will begin with a Slipping lines ceremony at 0915 in the city’s world-famous unESco waterfront albert dock before all twelve yachts and their courageous uk and international crew form a spectacular parade of sail on the River Mersey from 1115 to 1200. at 1230, the clipper 2017-18 Race start gun will mark the beginning of the circumnavigation which, subject to change pending approval, will start with a short course on the River Mersey, a chance for spectators to get up and very close to the action.
This unique challenge is the only event which trains everyday people to become ocean racers, and final planning is underway as it prepares to return to liverpool for the first time in a decade. having grown enormously in number of participants, yacht entries, economic influence and media value since its last visit, race organisers are looking forward to putting on an even bigger show than ever before. There will be plenty of chance for members of the public to get up close and personal with the race before its departure as the fleet is due to arrive in the city six days earlier on Monday 14 august. The arrival will coincide with the official opening of the clipper Race village, at 1000 that same day, with a white sail parade of the fleet on the Mersey, followed by an official civic welcome ceremony. for the duration of the week, there will be a series of public events and activities scheduled at the clipper Race village to include ‘about the clipper Race’ free public talks and the opportunity to look around one of the clipper 70-foot ocean racing yachts. Some 712 clipper Race crew members will represent over 40 different nationalities during the circumnavigation, however some crew members will be starting the clipper Race much closer to home. Paul almond, who grew up in formby, near liverpool, will be taking part in the first half of the race, taking him from his home city to the whitsundays in australia, via urguguay, cape Town, fremantle, Sydney, and hobart, meaning he will cross the north atlantic, South atlantic and Southern oceans.
Paul says: “when i was 11, i learned to sail laser and Enterprise dinghies on the very safe and enclosed Southport Marina. i also have fond memories of spending many friday nights as a teenager going to liverpool Empire to watch my favourite bands and i had fun busking on lord Street with a guitar and poor vocals! for Paul, starting in liverpool and visiting Sydney, where he also lived for seven years will be particularly special “we are departing from liverpool, one of the greatest historical cities in the world and sailing to my other most favourite city – Sydney. This will be a far cry from laser sailing on safe Southport Marina!” crew can complete the full circumnavigation, or one or more of its eight challenging legs and approximately 40 per cent of crew have no previous sailing experience before they start their intensive race training programme. The clipper 2017-18 Race, the biennial event’s eleventh edition, will visit six continents on its global route. after leaving albert dock crew will race over 3,000 nautical miles across the atlantic ocean to the first stopover port, Ponte del Este, uruguay. from there the fleet will continue on to cape Town, fremantle, Sydney, hobart, the whitsundays, Sanya and Qingdao in china, Seattle, Panama, new york, and derry-londonderry, before completing the circumnavigation in liverpool on July 28, 2018.4uH, Channel Islands

footballing career saw him play for Brian clough at nottingham forrest and make his international debut against Brazil in the 1986 world cup finals in Mexico for northern ireland, had his career cut short by a serious injury when he was in his 20s.
An inspirational Merseyside couple who have helped almost a million children and young people over the past 21 years through their various projects and businesses have been recognised with a national honour. Former professional footballer, David Campbell, and his partner, actress Lorraine Sass, of Liverpool, have been given a british Citizen Award for their service to education. The british Citizen Awards were launched in January 2015, to recognise exceptional individuals who work tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on society. David, aged 52, uses his considerable football expertise to help others through his business, David Campbell Soccer, which he and Lorraine established in 1995. Their aim was to not only make the business a personal success, but one that would also bring benefit to their local community. 48
it was this career-halting injury that made david realise the importance of education, particularly for those young people wanting to go into the sport he loved. he and lorraine firmly believe that sport can be a tool for good bringing communities together, providing healthy, fulfilling activity and to inspire those who take part. Together, they have used sport to bring fractured communities together – particularly throughout the 90’s in northern ireland. They also believed it would provide opportunities for disadvantaged communities to give an educational focus for disengaged teenagers from which they created direct introductions into jobs through their extensive contacts. Their desire to improve disability engagement in sport, most notable in their multiaward winning ‘hear the cheer’ scheme, launched at and run through Premiership football clubs, benefited thousands of deaf children who had traditionally been sidelined in football and sport in general. david was one of the first people to offer education-related football courses in schools and colleges in the uk – all of which he devised. he has also been passionate about ensuring that once youngsters are engaged in the sports education programmes he operates, they have through-routes into careers via direct introductions into work. youngsters who have been educated and trained through their extensive football schemes have gone on to have successful careers, coaching and playing in countries around the world, including china, uSa, canada and australia. david was instrumental in the
making of the feature film, Shooting for Socrates, in 2014, which documented northern irleand’s extraordinary journey in the Mexico world cup. it was a chance encounter at the cannes film festival between david and film director, James Erskine, 25 years on from the Mexico world cup finals that set the ball rolling for the film.

lorraine – an actress who has appeared on stage and screen including in the film Shooting for Socrates opposite John hanna has championed and encouraged women in the world of football, never allowing herself to be phased in what is a male-dominated sport. in addition, lorraine, known by her friends as ‘liverpool’s superwoman’, is a long-standing supporter of the charity when you wish upon a Star, which grants wishes for children with terminal illnesses. She has helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds over the past 18 years and is a hands-on volunteer, taking part in numerous events and wishes for hundreds of sick children. david and lorraine will be amongst 30 medallists who were honoured at a prestigious ceremony, at the Palace of westminster. Speaking about his nomination, david said: “it’s hard to believe that since i finished playing football and started the business, we have had nearly a million children and youngsters through our programmes. if someone had told me that at the time, i would've said they were mad. i get a real buzz out of what we do and it’s great when i see some of our young coaches being sent off around the world with the confidence and education they need to be able to succeed.”

THE UNION BUILDING
Is this the safest residential tower on the Wirral? The refurbishment of the union Building on the wirral is now well underway. The 10 storey residential tower in wallasey, which was formally known as charter house, will be completed in autumn of this year. Purchased from the council by camco Estates the union Building is a well proportioned low residential block located in an established residential neighbourhood. a good example of 20th century municipal architecture proposals for the block will be a sensitive refurbishment programme of the 42 two bed apartments, respecting the original design intent, whilst at the same time bringing the building into the 21st century. The external improvements will ensure the building continues to sit well with its domestic neighbours, whilst the internal refurbishment will, in comparison, be much clearer. These apartments are now for sale. For more info please see http://acentusrealestate.com /properties/the-unionbuilding/

WORK TO BEGIN ON £22M ROAD SCHEME Work has started on creating a new dual carriageway for a major route into Liverpool city centre national contractor osborne is to begin widening the a565 (great howard Street/derby Road) as part of a £22m road improvement scheme. The first phase of the works will be at the prime city centre junction of leeds Street and king Edward Street and will require off-peak lane closures between 9.30am to 3.30pm and 7pm to 6am.To minimise disruption two lanes will be kept open at peak-times. during off-peak times, the junction may be reduced to single lane running and motorists heading north and east out of the city centre from The Strand are advised to expect extended journey times and consider using alternative routes. This part of the project is
expected to be completed by winter 2017.
project is anticipated to be completed by Spring 2018.
at the same time, work will begin to widen great howard Street with one lane of the northbound carriageway heading to Bootle closed from oil Street to Blackstone Street.
upgrading the route, which handles traffic between Sefton and liverpool along the northern docks, is a key element of a £100m regeneration drive in north liverpool.
These works will take advantage of the current road closure where the great howard Street bridge is being replaced as part of a £10m project that will enable freight to travel to and from the new £400m liverpool2 deep water container terminal, which is part of Peel land and Trust’s £5.5bn liverpool waters scheme. The bridge is expected to complete in august and will see the road re-open. The dualling works will require a permanent northbound lane restriction which will then move to the southbound side as the scheme progresses. This element of the
The new 2.7km long stretch in the city’s atlantic corridor is seen as crucial to a new creative district in the area – called Ten Streets and will have spin off benefits for Everton fc’s proposed new stadium at nearby Bramley Moore dock. The new dual carriageway, part funded by the liverpool city Region growth deal, will also pave the way for a major revamp of the historic Regent Road – aka “the dock Road” – to make that more pedestrian and bike friendly, creating a continuous cycle route from crosby to liverpool. 55

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SINGLE MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO M y daughter Melodie had qualified to dance for England in the dance world cup in offenburg, germany with her dance school The grace academy, run by the lovely grace adams Short and her incredible team of teachers. Most of the students and parents had already flown out there - but typical "Simmo" style there was the added complication of Pgl in her last year of primary school which she didn't want to miss. Therefore, i made plans to drive to Shrewsbury to collect her and then fly from Birmingham with an inter connecting flight on the Sunday to amsterdam - then onto Strasbourg in france where we were all staying - only half an hour train ride away from offenburg. amazingly, my leg of the journey ran like clockwork and we were ready and checked in at Birmingham airport in plenty of time - which was when the fun started! our flight to amsterdam was delayed and we were held in Birmingham overnight and promised to be flown via Brussels at 6am the next morning! it was at this point i called my 14 year old son Michael to inform him we were safe and flying "via germany" only to be informed that "Mum - you do know Brussels is in Belgium
and noT germany" - erm - yes of course i did son! Melodie’s helpful offering of "Beijing" being the capital of germany didn’t bode well! we flew out on the Monday morning to Brussels only to be met with more delays and literally landed in Strasbourg with minutes to spare having dashed to hotel under a flurry of costumes and ran for the offenburg train - it was well worth the effort as their "Tribal fusion" meant they all won a bronze medal in the fusion ballet section - so when we collapsed on the hotel bed with a bronze medal around her neck - i can’t ever remember feeling so proud of not only Melodie but all the kids from The grace academy. after another day of dancing - and a little sight-seeing on the wednesday ... we found ourselves stranded in amsterdam overnight and were once again plonked in a hotel until we could be flown out the next morning - this was an amazing adventure and yes, i admit that we did bounce on the beds when we were given the last room in the hotel which was a suite! So 4 days - 5 different countires, 12 hours sleep and a bronze medal later (Plus 4 more bronze for her dance school and a silver - which then resulted in Team England winning the world cup for the second year running) ... did i go home and rest ? don't be daft ... dashed straight to the Sugar hut to host the very aptly named faB awards as that describes the evening perfectly! if anyone knows how to celebrate how fabulous this city and
their businesses are - its amanda, and this was a very intimate, and personal event which resulted in partying into the small hours with a wonderful array of local businesses who were all well worthy winners and it was an honour to be asked to host it. alarm was set back for 4am friday to return to breakfast on Radio city 2 with Rossie .. then straight to the old Stables in allerton to host a lovely charity event for cash for kids and incubabies which had been superbly put together by the gorgeous lia kennedy. i think most of the ladies partied late into the night ... however... i'm not ashamed to admit i was tucked up in bed for 10pm ready for my Saturday breakfast show just a few hours later. i really do get the opportunity to work with the most wonderful people ... and i can't not mention the incredible night i hosted in new Brighton at the floral Pavillion for the all you need is love concert for Peace - in a world that appears to have so much misery this showed that the youngsters from the school choirs had the right message for the world about conqeriong hate with love which was put together by amy chalmers and Matt lammin who recently appeared on Pitch Battle with their choir over the water and topped by a fabulous performance by The christians. Seriously - i know i don’t get much sleep but i really do get to meet some incredible people and work on the most amazing events - plus go on the best adventures!

Lifestyle monthly
a close friend said to me recently that i don't fit in. www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk it's the biggest compliment she could have made. People editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk who fit in don't go onto set up companies, they are happy to work in someone else's. People who fit in don't change lives. i may be an oddball but at least i don't try to be something i am not. i am unique. it is only now in my mid 40s that i am comfortable with not fitting in. as adolescents we scream be part of the in crowd. in our 20s we are desperate to be in the cool crew and in our 30s we crave the lifestyle we are encouraged to lead by newspapers, magazines and the media. of course i have confirmed in some ways; i pay my taxes, i abide by the law, i don’t take drugs, smoke or even drink alcohol. But i refuse to be part of a movement i don’t believe in. i won’t go to a party “just to show my face”as is often expected in this industry. i have six children to attend to and would rather be looking after their needs. Plus my bedtime comes around quite early these days. i don’t want to be busy for the sake of being busy. i never fitted in, it could have stemmed from always moving around schools as a child due to my mother’s divorces and marriages. So people had already forged relationships and i was always on the outside. one time as a child i was told i could hang out with a group of girls if i could recite all the names of duran duran (Showing my age now) i didn’t and it never bothered me, those things were never important to me then and they aren’t now. i am a risk taker, i have had job interviews in 3 different countries, i have moved to cities not knowing a soul to chase a job offer. i adapt to suite myself and no one else as the saying goes “So we have to go to school, get an education and get a job? what if i want to become a duck?” when i was at school we were all asked what we wanted to do when we left. no one ever mentioned being self employed. Even now in my children’s school they are encouraged to go to university and get a job. if we were all the same there would be no jobs for people, there would be nothing to do and life would be so much more boring. Quack Qack Be unique, be memorable
