MARCH HOLIDAYS 15 Mar Monday Green Monday National holiday 20 Mar Saturday March Equinox Season 25 Mar Thursday Greek Independence Day National holiday 28 Mar Sunday Daylight Saving Time starts Clock change/Daylight Saving Time clocks go forward
Clean Monday (in Greek known as Kathara deftera), also known as Green Monday, is the first day of lent for the Greek Orthdox - a period which lasts 40 days till Easter. Green Monday is a public holiday in Cyprus and is celebrated outdoors usually in fields, parks or on beaches. The celebration of the Greek Revolution of 1821, less commonly known as Independence Day, takes place in Greece, Cyprus and Greek diaspora centers on 25 March every year, coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation. The day is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus

In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox (aka spring equinox or vernal equinox) occurs when the Sun crosses the equator line, heading north in the sky.
WILDLIFE
Conservationists are calling for a hunting ban across the Larnaca Salt Lake network to prevent migrating flamingos from swallowing lethal quantities of lead shotgun pellets. Martin Hellicar, director of Birdlife Cyprus, said flamingos are at risk of
ingesting the tiny pellets lying on the lakebed as they feed. Cyprus is a key stop on the migration path for many birds flying from Africa to Europe. The Larnaca Salt Lake, a wetlands network of four lakes, typically welcomes as many as 15,000 flamingos from colder climates who stay
throughout the winter and leave in March. Hunting is banned around most of the lake but they are allowed to shoot duck. The Game and Fauna Service says in the first two months of last year, 96 flamingos were found dead in the Larnaca Salt Lake wetlands due to lead poisoning. Cyprus Veterinary Services official Panayiotis Constantinou, who has conducted autopsies on flamingos, said lead from the pellets poisoned the birds. The high number of deaths is mainly attributed to heavy winter rain two years ago that stirred up the lake sediment and dislodged embedded lead shot. 7
RESTAURANT
Y
ou can’t miss Curry Express in Larnaca if you’re driving from Dhekelia road through to Larnaka on Makarios Avenue towards Finikoudes. The popular takeaway is on the right after the port roundabout opposite Dominos Pizza, you’ll definitely be enticed by a waft of aromatic spices following you down the road. Every dish is cooked from scratch ensuring a five-star taste and quality cuisine.
8
The popular eatery is the brainchild of successful entrepreneur Phivos Petrou, an English Cypriot
who moved from London to Cyprus in 2005 to give his children a better lifestyle growing up. In the UK Phivos owned a fire protection business and while it was always his dream to open a British Indian takeaway, he brought his fire protection business to Cyprus when he moved. He now employs 40 people in the fire protection business which operates all over Cyprus and he has ten staff at Curry Express. Phivos said, “I knew I had
to live in Cyprus, it is a better-quality life, and I would rather be stressed in the sunshine than in the rain. He added, “I always wanted to open a British Indian takeaway to replicate the taste we have back in the UK. My father was in the restaurant business, with
fish and chips so I have grown up with takeaways and I had my first food business at the age of 20 in South Yorkshire. I first tried opening a curry house in Kiti in 2006 but I couldn’t get the licence. I had the premises, I had delivery bikes but couldn’t get it going due to red tape. In late 2018 I found the premises in town centre originally, then in April 2020, moved Curry Express and all the original staff to where we are now. I knew Larnaca would be commercially viable, you have Brits and English Cypriots here as well as many other nationalities, it has a city mentality. I wanted to make food like I ate back in England with a difference. Curry Express is all about cleanliness, we have an open kitchen so you can see your food being prepared, every dish, every order is prepared from scratch in the traditional way. This
ensures we bring out the fragrance of the spices without being too hot for western tastes. But we cater for everyone and for those who prefer the hot and spicy Asian curry or vegetarian, vegan and slimmer’s dishes then just ask.” The naan breads and tandoori cooking is made in the traditional imported clay ovens visible for customers to see. All meats are marinated from the day before and when you see the tandoori chicken and lamb come out of the
tandoori oven with the red colour and the spots of black charring of the Greek yogurt (2% fat & gelatin free) it definitely tastes as good as it looks! “My staff are all Indian, trained in Indian cuisine. You need to have a good team to work together, the Head Chef, Harry from North India is the back bone of the kitchen. Everything is visible and it really works, if you make good quality food at a good price you can’t really go wrong."

BIKERS WOMEN MOTOR
LIFESTYLE REVS UP TO ALEXANDRA GEORGIOU, FOUNDER OF THE CYPRUS WOMEN MOTORBIKERS CLUB Do you know how many women nikers are in Cyprus? - In our club there are approximately 25 registered members. We see a lot of women riding their motorcycle recently but I wouldn't know a number. I see that year by year more women are interested in motorcycles. What is the lure of bike riding, what makes it so appealing in cyprus Motorcycle riding for some is a hobby for some transportation, Riding is an anxiolytic hobby that gives the rider a feeling of freedom and adrenaline. In Cyprus we are lucky, most of the time we have nice and sunny days that everyone can enjoy their ride. If we had a better driving culture maybe more men and women would choose to ride a motorcycle than driving a car.
10
What do you think of people who don't wear helmets, safety is pretty low key with some bikers? People who don't take their safety measures for me are naive. Maybe they don't think that something bad
could happen or they don't respect the people waiting for them to return safe from their ride. This is also a matter of culture, in Cyprus many people consider motorcycles dangerous so they try to brainwash their children avoid riding or cause fear. That brings the exact opposite result, riders without the proper culture and education they either ride secretly or they didn't had a proper conversation on how and why safety is a number one thing.
What routes are your favourite in cyprus? Fortunately in Cyprus we have routes for all tastes, close turns, wide turns, straight roads... Some nice and well known routes are: Coastal roads towards Paphos or Ayia Napa. Mountain routes towards Agros from Nicosia, Nicosia to Pirgos Tillirias Limassol to Kakopetria. Limassol to Tochni through Louvaras, Eptagonia, Ora..
Tell us about the biker club I founded it in 2010. At first as facebook page without knowing if any women were riding in Cyprus with the purpose of helping and aspiring more women to start riding. Every May, back then the first Friday there was a worldwide event International female ride day. (Since 2014 IFRD is celebrated every first Saturday of May) She started organizing the event for the first time in Cyprus. Surprisingly women from allover Cyprus were joining the event and we all met on 7/5/2010 in Ayia Napa. It was a great and unique event due to the fact
that for the first time approximately 30 women were riding together in Cyprus taking part in a worldwide event. That day we enjoyed it so much we agreed to establish this club and promote safety riding and help more women who would like to ride. This year we have submitted our documents to make our club official.

Cyprus is famous for its beauty, and here’s another example of how living here can give you a model lifestyle
M
y name is Antreas Flourentzou, I am 28 years old and I am from Ammochostos in Cyprus. I have successfully finished my studies in Radiology at European University of Cyprus since 2015. Then, I started my training at Lifeguard School, I took a professional license and I work as a lifeguard for 3 years. Consequently, my touch with the sea, made me love it even more and this fact help me to maintain my physical condition and strength. At the same time, I partially worked as a barman in various night clubs which made me more sociable. Gymnastics is a basic and very important part of my life for 10 years because I train hard every single day and this definitely combined with balanced and healthy diet. My training program in winter aims in muscle growth but during the summer I try
to increase my strength, stamina and velocity with fat burning programs. All the above, help me to maintain a well-shaped and strong body. In my opinion self-care and attention of myself, is a choice from the one hand but it is also necessary. I daily look after my body and mind equally in order to keep myself in good physical condition. As a Cypriot, I believe that self care is undoubtedly a significant part of our culture. Furthermore, I love tattoos and as anyone can see I have done a lot of them on my body. In my free time, I usually make outdoor photo shooting when various
modeling agencies ask for it and throughout this procedure I can promote some wonderful places and myself of course. Finally, concerning social media, I am very active because I like to be informed, through them, about my interests like gymnastics and modeling. In addition I like to communicate with many people discussing about these topics and at the same time, this is a great opportunity to promote myself. CYPRUS YET TO EMBRACE ONLINE SHOPPING
C
yprus lies in the bottom four of EU countries for internet purchases. With high street shopping affected by the pandemic and changes in habits and preferences, e-commerce can be expected to grow further but Cyprus has a long way to go According to Eurostat, in the 12 months before the 2020 survey, 89% of people aged 16 to 74 in the EU had used the internet, 72% of whom had bought or ordered goods or services for private use.
More than 8 in 10 internet users in the Netherlands (91%), Denmark (90%), Germany (87%), Sweden (86%) and Ireland (81%) had bought or ordered goods or services over the internet in the 12 months before the survey. But fewer than 50% had shopped online in Bulgaria (42%), Romania (45%) and Italy (49%) and finally Cyprus with 52% in 2020 In the 3 months before the survey, the most common online purchases were clothes (incl sports
clothing), shoes or accessories. This was followed by films or series as a streaming service or downloads (32%), deliveries from restaurants and takeaways (29%), furniture, home accessories or gardening products (28%), cosmetics, beauty or wellness products (27%), printed books, magazines or newspapers (27%), computers, tablets, mobile phones or their accessories (26%) and music as a streaming service or downloads (26%). 21

My Forever F.I.T. story by Louise Laurenti
I
have always struggled with my weight so when I heard about Forever Living’s #BeResolute campaign and the January 24Day Challenge (which consisted of doing a nineday body reset followed by a fifteen-day fitness programme), I thought this is what I needed to finally get myself back on track and feeling fitter. There are various levels of the F15 programme depending on your fitness level, but since I had not really done any form of exercise, I started with Beginner Level 1. This can then lead onto Beginner Level 2, Intermediate Level 1 and 2 and Advanced Level 1 and 2. Day one also meant starting the C9 – a nineday weight management programme that revolves around a purposeful meal plan, gentle exercise, supplements and purifying aloe to cleanse your body, adjust your mindset and stop those bad habits. The first day of this was probably the toughest.
22
I also had some cravings but the C9 comes with a list of free foods (fruit and veg) that you can tuck into when you get hunger pangs, so it was great to be able to use this. A medium apple, some cucumber sticks and steamed broccoli – which I love – was all I needed to curb my hunger on day one, although I will admit that I did go to bed early! However, by the time I woke up on day two, I already felt a difference, and it felt good! After the first two days had past – the two days that are notoriously the most difficult – I found the programme plain sailing. Having two soy-based protein shakes a day (Forever Lite Ultra), plus a 600-calorie healthy meal cooked from scratch, made me feel great. The programme also includes supplements, Forever Garcinia Plus, Forever Therm and Forever Fiber, and these all play a part in assisting bodily processes* so that your body can keep on track by getting what it needs at the right time. Forever Aloe Vera Gel also plays
a major role in this whole journey, aiding digestion and supporting immunity. It may have an interesting taste (challenging to some) but WOW, it makes you feel good! I then moved on to the F15, and it was great to see specific exercise routines and additional recipes for added inspiration. Having a poached egg with avocado on wholemeal toast was a particular favourite of mine! I also increased my exercise so that once a week I was doing 30 minutes of jogging and two hourlong sessions of hot yoga. By the end my tummy and thighs felt more toned and my clothes were not as tight. I felt I looked better and I also felt stronger in myself. I highly recommend the Forever F.I.T. Programme to anyone who wants to look and feel better Forever Living and can work for anyone.

WELLBEING
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW! A L i f e s t y l e o f W e l l n e s s
S
pring is here! In Cyprus we are blessed with sunny warm days.
Each season carries with it its own energy. Spring tells us a story of the seed becoming a shoot, that with the right conditions will become a beautiful plant. Likewise, each person can choose to come out of their shell and test the waters so to speak. The perfect conditions for people to turn into their best selves are inner and outer harmony. However, the ‘right’ conditions are the resilience to withstand trials and keep going. The trails can be challenges that help you grow. Challenges can come from your environment. The pandemic world has made our environment limiting to say the least. A limiting mindset can too be a big challenge to overcome. The way you think is key to creating a fertile perspective to help you grow into your best self. Creating a fertile perspective can be easier than you think. Simple steps to update your life can be exactly what you need to break out of your seed shell and bloom!

Updating your life this time of year has been an old and
important tradition. Just like stoking up to prepare for winter times was. The famous spring clean is known among all cultures. In spring time not only are we encouraged to clean our homes, see to our gardens, but also to clean our bodies. Traditionally the fasting season gives both the body a time to regenerate and time for the livestock to breed. While many people these days do not stick to traditions of old, there is much that can be used in the modern-day life. Here are some useful ideas that you can do this month to update your life and make room for yourself to flower with ease into your best self: 1. Spring Clean your home, car, workplace – cleaning out the old will make space from greater clarity of thought and give you more space to experience joy. 2. Sort out your wardrobe – you wear clothes everyday, the wardrobe is a key part of your daily experience. Has there been something you haven’t worn for years, are there clothes that no longer fit you? It’s time to let them go. Likewise, if you have favourite items you are saving for a special occasion, remember your
Ekaterina Sophia in Larnaca Join Ekaterina for meditations at The Tree of Life in Larnaca, Thursdays 6pm life is the special occasion. Holding on to things you no longer need is a state of lack. One rule, do it all with joy! 3. Detox the body – the body is the place you have to live. Your experience of life is determined by the health of your body and mind. Give yourself a gift of freedom. Even if for a few weeks give up that toxic habit, do a cleanse. Move, move, and then move a little more. Get the lymph system flowing. 4. Detox the mind – have you had too much screen time, have you had negative thoughts? Set 10 minutes a day to restart your brain with a guided meditation practice. There are no many wonderful self-care gifts you can give yourself this time of year. I wish you an amazing start to the season and fun times.

KOSTAS SAMPANIS "AUTUMNE" Kostas Sampanis is a composer and guitarist from Athens. Graduate of the Department of Music Studies of EKPA, with studies of electric guitar, classical harmony, modern theory and jazz harmony at the Conservatory of Music Practice. From a very young age, he realized his love for the progressive sound and he was influenced by many bands and artists, most notably Opeth and Porcupine Tree who played the most important role in his personal aesthetics and in the way he perceives the sound in general. “Autumne”, is his first EP and includes 5 Instrumental tracks that travel the listener through very melodic & emotional paths, creating a deep nostalgia for the past years, places and people. Costas’ compositions take us to the places where he grew up, to the first music he ever heard, in the figures of his loved ones, in the love and respect he has for nature where he realized he wanted to commit himself to music.
“Autumne” is an emotional work, wellstructured from beginning to end. From nostalgia, to the promise of meeting again and finally a farewell. Pure progressive elements, with colourful expressiveness, delicate rendition, flawless compositions. Remarkably different, fresh, emotional & human. Music, compositions, guitars by Kostas Sampanis, drums by George Pouliasis (Playgrounded), bass by Ilias Karkavelias, piano by Stelios Fragkous. String instruments for the song “A Heartbeat Away”

Supergirls don’t cry..... Supergirls just FLY!’ expressions are heard in each of her story telling songs which can also be identified as poems with music.
Two talented young Supergirls caught my attention this month – NAMA DAMA and ERIKA SOTERI. Both very gifted musicians from Cyprus with a promising future ahead. Both have a different approach and equally deserve spotlight and recognition. Like I have said previously.... we have a lot of great musicians on this small island! NAMA DAMA is the solo project of singer/ songwriter Anastasia Demetriadou from Nicosia. Her first EP, Confessions to My Songbird was recently released and has received great acclaim. Her music is an amalgamation of Classical, Folk, Soul and hints of Rock. Combined, her personal artistic 28
Her work can be described as deep and mesmerizing soul exposed themes which evoke passion, accompanied by her beautiful piano skills. DAMA LAMA is musically ambitious and not scared to experiment. I hear hints that resemble Kate Bush and strong vocals like Alanis Morissette .... it will be interesting to see what will come next. Confessions to My Songbird can be found on Spotify/ Bandcamp/ITunes & Amazon. ERIKA SOTERI is a singer/songwriter, born in London and has spent most of her years in Cyprus. Her music is a wonderful fusion of Jazz, Soul, Funk and RnB, resulting

in a funky songstress with smooth and refined vocals. This promising artist, who appeared on The Voice Greece, got a 4 chair turn proving herself as an artistic powerhouse. Her recently released single Masquerade, has funky and soulful tones with meaningful lyrics relating to her beliefs and current issues. A previous single, The American Dream, leans more to her love of Jazz and Blues. Erika’s rich and
melancholy voice screams class and deepfelt vibes and is a real pleasure to listen to. I am looking forward to the Debut EP which Erika is currently working on and seeing both ladies perform when LIVE events are possible again. Find Erika Soteri on Spotify/ITunes/Amazon and YouTube OF LIMBO Going across the pond now to Long Island, California. This West Coast state has seen many ‘New Rock’ bands emerge in recent years and one such band is Of Limbo. Described as an energetic and dynamic Rock band who simply but effectively, introduce themselves as ‘…….the sound of Rocks future… not past’. The four member band includes brothers Jake and Luke from Melbourne, Australia, who followed their passion of music to California where the LIVE music scene is thriving and Rock music is welcomed.
one foot in front of the other and continue. Their distinctive sound of Rock with an edge is upbeat, dynamic, full of deep riffs with provocative and sexy tones (just listen to ‘The Devil you Know’!). Their high energy and crazy antics onstage and great rapport with their audience, has venues full and fans going back for more. Definitely a band to keep an eye on, which is what I have been doing the last couple of years. COVID has obviously put a pause on all their
touring the past year but the band is more than ready to get back on the road. Prior to Covid, the band released their single Nothing But Now, a highly energizing song with the emphasis on ‘ do what you want, there is nothing but now’ …maybe they subconsciously predicted what was coming! Check out their album NICOTINE and singles on all music platforms.
The band defied all odds by surviving a car accident a couple of years ago, whist setting off on a national tour. Their commitment to their music and fans, encouraged them to put 29
GLAMPING Cyprus hopes to tap a new niche market for tourists with luxury camping, or glamping, for which legislation is being drafted, deputy tourism minister Savvas Perdios has announced
H
e spoke of a new era in tourism because of growing interest in spending time in nature and said Cyprus could compete well, both as regards camping as we know it, and the new market – glamping. “The opinions of various bodies will be sought in the final stages of preparation, and then a bill will be submitted to the law office so that it can be implemented in 2022,” he said. Perdios said he had briefed MPs on the National Tourism Strategy, adding that this year’s plan comprises three pillars: advertising and marketing; upgrading of infrastructure focusing on specific forms of tourism; and improvement of the competitiveness of urban and mountain areas. Under a Council of Ministers decision, as of March 1, passengers from 56 countries will be able to visit Cyprus without being quarantined for 14 days, unless they test positive for Covid-19 upon their arrival.
30
Responding to a question, Perdios said it is too early for estimates about tourism as all countries are experiencing the second or third wave of the pandemic and it will be difficult for someone to travel today or in March. “There is a hesitancy among our partners abroad to say what programme they expect to follow this year,” he said, adding that there should be a clearer picture in the next few weeks. Asked about the possibility of a health passport for those who have been vaccinated for the coronavirus, he said this was an idea that was being discussed with opinion divided among supporters and opponents. Committee chairman Andreas Kyprianou welcomed the new strategic plan which he said was focused on making Cyprus more
than just a sun and sea destination focused on hotel tourism. Changes in the island’s tourism product will instead turn attention to the mountains, nature trails, traditional products and wine routes among others. This will not only increase tourism flows but help combat rural depopulation, he said. Greens MP Charalambos Theopemptou said it was important that tourism revenue benefited all areas of Cyprus. And he said the party had submitted proposals on regulations for
camping sites. “I am very concerned about the creation of large, luxury camping sites. I am not voicing opposition, but we need to very careful,” he said. Camping in the forest is carried out in cooperation with the forestry department, so it was important to be careful as regards their presence in the forest, the number of people they will cater
for and the activities that they will include. “We do not want to see camping sites that are
damaging to nature and the forest, and run counter to protection of the environment,” he said.

THE DOGGY BEACH
DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A BEACH THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY BOTH DOGS AND THEIR OWNERS?
“ I think the beach is a god send for dog owners in the Paralimni municipality and much further afield I personally have met some amazing people on there and countless gorgeous dogs It has more of a community spirit than any beach I've ever visited The Kapparis Dog friendly Beach has been heralded as the best dog beach on the Island credit to everyone who fought to have it and to the current Mayor and Paralimni Municipality. “ Andie Rollie - manager of Doggy Beach
“ This beach is an excellent community facility, it’s a place for dogs to socialise with each other in a safe environment and owners too. In the summer many owners swim with their dogs, it’s such a special place to be able to make unbreakable bonds. The beach community is very grateful to Andy Rolliewho organises photos and oversees the smooth running , he has turned it into an amazing facility. “ 32

T
he Doggy Beach is the last beach in Kapparis is located just before the border and was designated by Paralimni municipality in 2016 after dog owners lobbied them for a beach to take their four legged friends. As temperatures rise in summer, it’s perfect for dogs to cool down in the sea and there are two bins for dog waste and responsible owners respect this. If you’re lucky you may even spot dolphins swimming. Since the beach was declared as designated for dogs, the word has spread very quickly amongst the locals and the beach has been filled with dogs and their owners ever since. And now every summer residents hold a Beach Party for Dogs in Cyprus where up to 100 dogs have been seen jumping the waves! As there are no designated park areas for dogs in Cyprus this has been recognised as the best spot in the country to take your dog.
Resident Margo Flouri says, “We have beautiful beaches and this part of Cyprus has the best seasides. The Doggy Beach is like a river that flows in the sea
“ This beach is the best dog beach all over Cyprus. My dog is really enjoy spend time there and swim professionally on wave board. “ Alena Iliushchenkova
and is enjoyed by families, I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Katie Kryiakoudi added, “I’m really happy it exists and allows me to spend
quality time with my dog at the beach. It is great to meet other animal lovers there . People really appreciate it and respect it. I am lucky to be living close to it."

“Our restaurant, our life’’
Our dream was to one day create good service for tourists that would make their holidays here in Cyprus, even more special. This dream came true in 1989, where we established a small family business in Ayia Napa, a restaurant, as I (Theo) am a trained chef and my brother (Peter) is a trained waiter. Since then we have tried our best to provide as much satisfaction as possible to our customers.
There’s a reason why Flames Restaurant is listed as one of Trip Avisor’s top ten restaurants in Ayia Napa. Dedicated to providing an excellent service, its winning mix of friendly staff, a great atmosphere and delicious food has delighted diners since it was established 1989. If traditional Cypriot dishes are what your after, Flames is the place to go. You’ll find House Specialities, Steak, Grills, Fish, Pasta Vegan and Vegetarian Dishes on the Menu. Not to mention its fabulous Wine list and homemade desserts - all chosen to complement your meal perfectly. 34
