HELLO MAY Happy birthday to us!! One year ago I jumped on a repatriation flight from the UK with a dream and a plan to launch Lifestyle magazine. That dream has come true, having made it through an entire year, launching in a pandemic and still printing every month. You see, when you focus on something positive and refuse to give up, good things happen. Winners never quit and quitters never win. Throughout the year there have been occasions when I have questioned my sanity but I reminded myself, if it was easy, everyone would do it. I would like to thank everyone for your support, for the small businesses who also believed in us. Many of your are regular customers now which fills me with pride. Lifestyle is all about
supporting communities and people in business. We raise your profile and remind people that despite these troubling times, we are open for business and are here to help. I have made so many friends and created so many solid business relationships I can see Lifestyle going from strength to strength. I am delighted to be working with Rock FM who have given me the opportunity to expand Lifestyle to the other side of the island in Paphos and Limassol Hopefully the rollout of the vaccination will mean covid cases will go down and we can resume business as normal. The beach and gym is calling me! Despite writing this in yet another lockdown, I remain grateful for living in such a beautiful country and take advantage of the peaceful coastal walks
close to me. And of course with the gorgeous weather, there’s plenty of time to lounge on a sunbed soaking up the rays whilst listening to a podcast. It is the little things in life that makes us happy. When you focus on the good, the good gets better. Enjoy your month and stay stylish!

PET HEALTH
Meet Dr Panagiotis Tsoukka DVM, MRCVS, owner of Furry Friends Veterinary Clinic
I
opened the practice on 11th January 2021. Prior to this I had spent two years in the UK. Then I wanted to come back to Cyprus as the pandemic hit and I was sick of the weather in the UK. I started doing some home visits last year some home visits but it was always my plan to open a practice and now I have one.
think Cyprus is ready for it, in the UK animal hospitals are open 24 hours and prices are 10 - 15 x more than here. But the quality of service is a lot higher; imagine a 24 hour hospital with 10 nurses round the clock looking after animals, it is going to be exceptional. And it is my dream to open something similar here.
There are two vets in here, myself and Panagiota Mousikou.
Here are Furry Friends we have all the equipment to treat our animals. We have a state of the art x-ray machine and an ultra sound. All our equipment is brand new, we are working to the highest gold standard.
I wasn’t expecting to be that busy when we opened, but we have 500 clients. Clients and not animals because already we treat about 800 pets. We are doing a great job so far. So far so good. We do operations, soft tissue surgery, emergency surgeries, we have a lot of cats neutered and dogs castrated. Not all is off peak surgeries, we accept all cases. We are lucky in Cyprus that vets bills are not as expensive as in the UK and so pet insurance is not necessary. I don’t 6
We are very passionate about what we do. I personally will never be defeated in my life, always trying my best and I work long hours I will do everything to save a patient, I have slept 5-7 days in the clinic to ensure a patient doesn’t die. I wanted to become a vet because I love the challenge. There are not a lot of vets in the area
and it isn’t just my love for animals, it is a profession, you need to be the best that you can be. It is a difficult and hard job. We never turn down a patient and already people come from as far away as Nicosia and Larnaca, we have a very good name. For more details call 23 744494

CYPRUS RESIDENCY PLANNING GROUP
APPLICATIONS FOR RESIDENCY What is the final cut off date for UKN’s, who moved here prior to 31 December 2020, to apply for MUKW residency documents as a CRPG client? CRPG will close off residency applications on 30 June – so it is advisable to contact CRPG Help Desk by 14 June 2021.
Will the CRPG Help Desk continue to offer advice and support for UKN’s? Yes, the CRPG Help Desk will continue to operate until the end of September 2021 Where will UKN’s go for advice after the Help Desk closes? There is always plenty of advice and help on the British High Commissions’ Living in Cyprus Guide which can be found on the GOV UK website https://www. gov.uk/guidance/living-incyprus
8
Will people still be able to apply for the MUKW1, 2 or 3 going forward? Only if that person arrived, or was resident, in Cyprus prior to the end of the Withdrawal Agreement,
i.e. 31 December 2020 and has documentary evidence to support their application – the CRPG Help Desk can advise on this. (It is worth mentioning here that if you have either MEU1,2 or MEU3 it is not obligatory to change it to the new MUKW system) What will they apply for if not? They will have to apply under Category F as a Third Country National – please refer to the Ministry of Interior website http://www.moi. gov.cy/moi/crmd for more information Is this something that CRPG can help with? No, the remit of CRPG was (and is) to assist UKN’s who met the criteria (as set by the FCDO UK Nationals’ Support Fund) to apply for residency under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement i.e. MUKW1 (formerly MEU1) and MUKW3 (formerly MEU3) To register with Gesy what do I need? You either need to have a residency document as above, or worked here
and paid into Social Insurance or an original Alien Registration Document. And do I still need to get an S1 from the UK NHS? Yes, if you are of retirement age and receiving a UK Govt Pension – please refer to the CRPG website for more information or the BHC Living in Cyprus Guide - gov.uk/guidance/ living-in-cyprus If I do apply for an S1 what about my rights to healthcare in the UK when I go back? Applying for an S1 does not affect your rights to healthcare in the UK – when you return you inform the NHS that you wish to re-register If I am not registered with Gesy and do not have an S1, can I use my EHIC/GHIC in Cyprus? Either card can be used for emergency treatment only but it does not cover treatment or the medical needs to UK Nationals who are resident in Cyprus.

SPA
Lifesyle meets Marrakesh SPA
Ayia Napa owner, Valery Assaf.
Specialising in the only authentic Moroccan Hamam & Massage in Cyprus How did you get into the business? I used to be an auditor in VISA Inc as regional risk manager for the African continent, travelling around the world, visiting new cultures and civilizations. These trips allowed me to enrich my experience in the different SPAs and body wellness therapies specially in the Hamam (traditional bath) - in Morocco where I used to live - for being an essential moroccan habit and tradition on a weekly basis. The Hamam is a fantastic way first to clean the body skin from toxins but also a way to rejuvenate. Although it is a physical bath, I believe it cleanse us from inside as well by plonging us in a beautiful relaxation sensation and positive energy afterward.... When did you decide to switch careers? All around the world spa goers are increasingly seeking tradition, authenticity and an unforgettable experience 12
when visiting a spa. They are looking for specific treatments that offer true results. The Eastern European and Middle Eastern Hamams are known to represent the latest of these trends. When my first child was born I decided to give up the job. My job in VISA Inc was a single life job due to lots of traveling. My wife and I chose Cyprus as we fell in love with the island when we visited it before to marry. Sometimes you just wake up and there you are! You’ve sold everything in your mind and you're gone. We arrived in early 2013, a very difficult year of economic and financial crisis. Another challenge we surpassed. Tell us about the hamam massage you offer: Marrakech SPA is the first and unique Moroccan
Hammam in all Cyprus. The concept is a luxury bath along with massage and beauty services in a Mauresque environment Hammam refers to ancient traditional Moroccan beauty rituals that Moroccan women and men practiced for centuries. It consists of a cleansing and refinement in a heated chamber that combines a vigorous full-body exfoliation by a therapist who uses a coarse mitt and massage along with health
EDITOR’S EXPERIENCE: "I was invited to try the Hamam massage. I was given a basket with towel and slipped into disposable underwear and sandals. My clothes were safely stored away in a locker in the changing room. boosting products like clay (Ghassoul) and Aloe-vera. At Marrakech Spa, our mission is to offer you an extraordinary journey like no other, where you will indulge yourself with an oasis retreat of the oriental Nights, leaving the outside world behind for a unique experience of relaxation and skin rejuvenation, in a space of deep warmth and comfort. The decoration and the overall ambiance will allow you to travel in time and space and make you feel like a royalty for few hours. Why would you recommend a personal masseur? Just like you have personal trainers, you should have a personal masseur. Someone who understands and can connect to your body energy.
The massage is a connection of body energies passed usually from the masseur to the person having the therapy. It is recommended that you always choose an expert and avoid the non professionals in order to make sure that only the positive energy is passed along during the massage. The know how, the touch and the technique are an essential combination for a good massage and body treatment. It is also the compatibility of the 2 energies. This is why we always end up going back to a specific person. I always smile when I say it is like a mariage! You always end up with a very specific one. Follow on facebook www.facebook.com/ MarrakechSpaAyiaNapa For bookings Call 99 812051
I was taken into the Hamam massage room and laid on a large massage bed attached to a shower. There I was rinsed with warm water and scrubbed and massaged from toe to top, front and back. I was exfoliated and rinsed and then spent 10 minutes in the steam room before led back into the Hamam massage room where I was smothered with a clay all body mask. This was then rinsed off me and a final all body was applied. The whole treatment took an hour and a half and by the end of it I felt like a pampered queen in roman times. 4 masseurs took care of each limb. For days afterwards my skin was glowing and felt soft and incredible. People commented on my skin, it was sensational and highly recommended. You can’t put a price on self care and self love" 13

CLEANING PRODUCTS Lifestyle meets Romanian entrepreneur, Johnny Olaru of Advanced Industry Solution, sweeping up the island with his quality cleaning products. Why did you come to Cyprus? For the last nine years I have been coming 3-4 times a year for holidays and before that I lived in Cyprus for seven years. I went back to Romania because of my child to setup the company after seeing a gap in the market in March last year to setup the company in Cyprus. I have worked in sales all my life and I kept changing my job. I was working for a company in China and I was sales manager for them all over the world. The product for my company I knew because they wanted me to work for them and I knew the quality of the products, I told them I didn't want to work for them, I wanted to work for me. I said I would represent them in Romania and build the company, and in two or three years they would give me the company. They agreed and I filled my targets and they wanted to buy my company but I refused. Now we are partners
16
and I have exclusivity for many countries including Cyprus and Romania and Bulgaria. How has the pandemic affected business? The market in Romania was falling down with Covid so I decided to come to Cyprus as I know a lot of people here and I can sell my products here as most of my products are cleaning products for the service industry so there are lots of hotels and restaurants.
I target the industrial areas, not just for one area but in business you have to think about volumes and I have to sell in bulk, so it isn’t any use for me to sell to the domestic market. If I give you one spray for one you won’t buy another for a year and that won’t help me! Do you aim for your product to be number one here? I don’t think about number one, it is better to touch the number one. Is a positive attitude important in business? Absolutely, with Covid we didn’t plan for it and we can’t plan for next week with all the restrictions so I will work hard and have fun now.
How have you found My attitude to life is all launching a new about having fun, without business in Cyprus? this you have nothing. Very hard.. People If I stick my head behind here like to use cheap a computer I don't see products rather than high people smile, I don't see quality and this is hard for the beautiful island. me to persuade them that So I tell my daughter and they would save money in everyone, do everything the long-term. If you use you wish to try and try it you will save a lot of everything, because you money over time as they won’t know if you don't are special products with try and new experiences special ingredients and make you live. intense cleaning activity which means you need to www.advancedindustry.ro use it less.

Secure Corporate and Domestic Storage in Cyprus
C
hange is bound to happen. Renovation, relocation, remodelling. All these rank as one of the most stressful life events. Your life and work are disrupted as you make adjustments and changes to your daily routine. Additionally, organising, packing and keeping track of your belongings is a hassle. Then, once you move, you have to figure out where to put all your items. Luckily, you can take away some of that stress by storing your possessions
18
at Peter Morton Removals storage facilities! At PMR, one of the core values is to make customers life as stress-free as possible. Renovation, Relocation and Remodelling, do not have to be stressful life events. Due to increased demand a few years ago, Peter Morton made a considerable investment and sourced a dedicated, massive storage facility on a 7,500 square meter site. Right now, it is ranked as the largest and safest storage facility in Cyprus. At PMR, the storage crates are made of wood and are 250 cubic ft each in size. The storage facilities are approved by BAR (British Association of Removers) and all crates are manufactured and imported from the UK. It’s easy to store items anywhere, but our warehouse is both convenient and protected. Considering
your belongings’ safety ahead of time will save you the stress of having to replace something later or potentially losing something irreplaceable, expensive or dear to your heart. Additionally, the warehouse itself and all goods that are in the store are fully insured! With the recent increase in Cyprus crime rates, storing valuable goods at home doesn’t seem like a safe option any longer. Unlike houses, storage facilities offer more security to stored items. At Peter Morton Removals, the whole facility is covered by a state-of-the-art security system monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Three freerunning guard dogs also patrol the premises. It is, therefore, wiser to store valuable items in a
storage unit rather than in the garage or basement of our houses. Peter Morton Removals domestic storage crates are all individually numbered. They are loaded on to purposebuilt vehicles and brought to your house, ready to be loaded by the PMR team. Upon loading of each crate, with a full inventory, the doors will be secured. On arrival of the PMR vehicle back at a secure warehouse, your numbered crate will be placed back in its specific row by a forklift. This means your goods are not handled anymore from when collected. The redelivery process works exactly the same but in
reverse. Every crate that arrives at the warehouse is logged on to the computer system. You can access your domestic storage crates at any time by appointment with the office.
of where they going and what conditions they will be stored in. We welcome potential customers to come and view our facility, so you can see for yourself and be confident in your decision to use us.
At PMR, we always suggest to our clients that they come and look at the storage facility. If you want to store your goods, you need to be very sure For more information, please visit their website www.petermortonremoval.com or give them a call on 26923588 - Paphos office or 25722180 - Limassol office.19

CYPRUS RESIDENTS ARE BEING ASKED TO DONATE BLOOD AS SUPPLIES ARE DANGEROUSLY LOW.
D
ue to a number of people being in self isolation and constant delays in blood donation appointments, as well as the overall climate surrounding covid, there has been a drastic reduction in the number of people donating blood. At the same time, demand is at dangerously high levels and in fact amongst the highest ever recorded, the health ministry said. Patients hospitalised with Covid-19 tend to have
22
low haemoglobin and are thus in greater need for blood transfusions hence further increasing demand, the ministry added. Going to donate blood is exempt from SMS requirements and thus people who donate will receive written confirmation they can show in case of a police check. People who have been in contact with a confirmed case, who have come back from abroad or have Covid-19 symptoms are
required to wait 14 days before donating blood. People who have tested positive, including asymptomatic people must wait 21 days after testing positive, and seven days for after their last day of quarantine. LIFE COACH
Dimitrios Alexopoulos helps you love the life you live Tell me your background and how you came about becoming a coach I wrote my first novel when I was 12… I discovered an old typewriter in my grandfathers house in Dali-Nicosia and since then I fell in love with the smell of paper and the ability of expressing my feelings and my though through creativity and writing… I studied as a dental technician and then I started my inner search when I was 28… I always loved psychology and I had the charisma (if you can call it that) to act with empathy and to discover peoples deeper psychology and feelings… I was curious about human emotions, psychological world and inner thoughts from a very young age… After my second book, I started a philosophical novel collection consisting of 5 books which were all Awarded by the Panhellenic Literature Awards and other European and international distinctions. 26
Two of my books are translated in English and 2 of my poetry collections were awarded in European and international contests. All of my books are a blend of the three more crucial parts of life on my opinion: LOVE (love is everything, giving and receiving love) PSYCHOLOGY (inner thoughts, pain, fear and deeper emotions) DEATH (life is short, we must leave each moment with passion and mindfulness). As a consequence, NLP (Neuro-Linguistc Programming) came to my life. I studied and got certifications of Master Practitioner NLP Coach. Then I studied Life Coaching, Business Coaching and Spiritual Coaching. I was certified as a life coach and 4 years ago I was accredited as a Senior Practitioner Life Coach & Human Behaviour Specialist. How important is it for people to have coaching Life coaching is a bridge… It consists of
methods and techniques to help and support the coachee (client) to overcome obstacles and go from point A (current situation) to point B (desirable state – GOAL). So coaching is very important in personal as well as professional level. Coaching its NOT psychology and its NOT counselling. It is based on questions (powerful and methodical questions based on models) So the coachee (client) can find all the answers he/she needs… Because what we are seeking is hidden within us… You refer to yourself as a love ambassador. What do you mean? Actually this “title” was given to me by the majority of my clients, as friends and people who know me they call me “Water” since I am so calm (inner peace in difficult situations) but also so active and on the move on a daily basis.
I always act with Love, I believe that LOVE is the ULTIMATE power on Earth, and we must be falling in Love every single day…. And When I say falling in love I do not mean only with people… Of course with people, with smiles, with beautiful souls, even with a morning breeze or evening walk… To live with empathy, to Forgive, To Love… How much are your sessions? All the information about our Coaching Institute are on www.jamescoaching.com or even through email: info@jamescoaching.com How can coaching help people in their business... and relationships. Business field coaching can really grow the business… First of all • Setting clear and realistic goals • Brainstorming • Personal development. Because ALL the ROOTS are within us. If we are not good psychologically and in a personal level we will not give our best to our work. • Better focus • Smarter planning • Overcome procrastination And much more…
What common mistakes do people make when they are looking for love First of all from a tough past (mainly parenting) a person probably believes that she/he does not deserve love. That belief wedged subconsciously and will drive their lives to situations without real love and as a result to be afraid to love or to receive love. Furthermore, when a person is desperate she/he will make wrong choices that will bring emotions and emotions will bring reality… Also, some people think that are in love but in the end it might just be an enthusiasm maybe because they are facing a very challenging period so they have the perception that this is real love and when the truth is revealed they may even get depressed. As far as EGO driving… When a person is driven by his EGO, then they have specific boundaries hence making the decision to love someone only if the other person loves them back. They put prerequisites to their happiness and Love and if something goes wrong they already have that mechanism that dissociates them with that person (getting cold or the well known “Ghosting”).
And more daily mistakes like lack of empathy, first they wait to receive instead of giving, they do not evaluate a person correctly, they do not have basic criteria etc… Do you help with self esteem and self worth Absolutely! Self esteem & Self Worth are crucial in Life & Business. The beginning of all problems in most cases is that the person probably had a difficult past, with lots of criticism, toxic environment, bad choices of significant others, but with coaching we are coming to NOW, to TODAY… and how we can from Now set the foundations for a better tomorrow.

A LIFESTYLE OF WELLNESS
BLOOM INTO YOUR RADIANCE
R
adiance is something truly magical. Despite the prescribed beauty image of our times, radiance remains a state to admire. Is beauty even beauty without radiance? Perhaps, true beauty is an embodiment of radiance. If you choose to accept this as truth, then anyone can become beautiful at any time they choose to ooze a radiant aura. That sounds good to me! So how can you get this? Believe it or not, but your thoughts and emotions influence the way you look. Over time your emotions imprint on your face in forms of mimical lines. If you are not happy with what your lines tell about your emotions, don’t worry, this can be reversed though face relaxation practices and massage. I absolutely love my obsidian face roller for this. Cleanse, put on a fragrant face oil or cream and gently role the lines out smooth. Remember, the key to breathe out the stress from your face as you do this. Imagine a youthful glow appearing as you lovingly massage your beautiful face.

Your thoughts influence your emotions and your emotions influence the way you look and feel to others. Children and animals are experts at reading the energy you ooze out. While you are unlikely to have ever been an animal, with certainty you were once a baby and know deep down exactly how to pick up a person’s vibe. Have taken time lately to read your own vibe? The truth is that how you feel will over time make your vibe. This vibe will be so familiar to you that you might not even notice what you give off. So, the first step to blooming into radiance is to figure out what you feel and what is your vibe. If you like it keep it, if you don’t change it. To change your vibe you need to change your feelings. To change

your feelings you must change your thoughts. While a lifestyle change is the ultimate solution, a simple positive self-image thought will do the trick. Try something like, ‘I accept myself as I am and know I am good enough’. Repeat this throughout the day and remember to breathe. Have an amazing day and vibe high! With joy, Ekaterina Sophia
FEET
It’s flip flop season!
W
hether you are hitting the beach, or simply walking around the shops, flip-flops are often our selected footwear of choice for those hot, summer months. Unfortunately, wearing them can lead to painful foot ailments including cuts and abrasions, broken toes, and painful sprains. Flip-flops that are widely purchased today can be extremely unsafe for your feet. Some can be cushioned, which lead people to believe that they are good for your feet, but most offer little to no arch support. Flip-flops can also be very flimsy, which causes them to breakdown quickly. Shoes that do not offer proper arch support can lead to biomechanical abnormalities starting when the heel strikes the ground. This, in turn, can lead to pain felt in the joints of your foot and ankle, as well as in the knees, hips, lower back, shoulders and neck. If you are to wear flip-flops, wear them with caution and in moderation. It is important to assess how long you can wear flip-flops on an individual basis and to be aware of the effects they can have on your body. Your feet are working a lot harder than you may
realize by wearing flip-flops. You are forcing a change in your walking stride. With each step you take, your toes pull down on the shoe to stabilize the foot against the ground because your foot has to work harder to keep the flip-flop on. Forcing your toes to act in this unnatural manner can cause toe pain and even stubbed toes. By wearing flip-flops, you are increasing your risk of developing heel pain and tissue damage When choosing footwear for summer, follow these guidelines for healthy feet: • Shoes should be lightweight and ventilated. • Have an extra pair of shoes and alternate between them daily so that each pair has a chance to dry out completely. • Wear socks that are made of an acrylic
*2021
fiber, not cotton, as acrylic draws moisture away from the feet. • Change your socks at least once a day. Flip-flops should not be worn as everyday shoes - they are meant for the beach and the pool, not for everyday walking, as they do not give you any arch support, which makes your feet more prone to injuries. Wearing flip-flops for an occasional stroll may be fine, but you should never overdo it. If you feel pain in your foot or ankle, visit your podiatrist for further diagnosis and treatment. You can prevent painful foot conditions and injuries by wearing appropriate footwear and avoiding flipflips. 31
MUSIC
Finally May is here! One of my favourite months….not only because it’s my birthday month but because days and nights are warmer, summer is loading and there’s special something in the air! Of course….more music! Theofano Papachristou ‘Those who wish to sing…..always find a song’ .......and that is exactly what Theofano Papachristou did. With big dreams and a clear vision in her mind, through hard work and determination, she is making those dreams become reality. Theofano Papachristou is a singer/songwriter born in Cyprus but with roots from Greece. The beautiful and passionate redhead has a real depth to her voice which is soulful and smooth and somehow velvety. Her talents go beyond her song writing, composing and singing as she is also a talented piano player, guitarist and music teacher. Music appears to flow freely through her veins and out through her beautiful music. The singer recently released her first EP consisting of four songs, titled 32
The Other Me, which is a colourful combination of soul, funk with electronic and classical tones. Her lyrics are real and meaningful and are true expressions of her life. The EP has been well received locally and abroad, opening doors to a much wider audience. Theofano is usually very active around Cyprus and abroad and has collaborated with many popular musicians. She is also the lead vocalist for the band ‘RUBY…WHO? Who play

a combination of soul, funk, blues and rock….. great entertainment for any event, when events are up and running again. You can find her EP on Spotify, ITunes, Apple Music & Amazon and also on YouTube, with some great music videos. We need to support local artists and music……they brighten up our lives!
THE TOILERS ......... Blues, Blues and more Blues!! I am so grateful to Instagram for introducing me to so many musicians and bands. One of these discoveries is this hearty group of Irish lads known as The Toilers. Hailing from Ireland but based in London, this Blues band caught my attention after seeing some videos of them performing. Maybe it’s the lovely smooth Irish accent that drew me in or their happy and positive vibes and tasty bass licks that hooked me! The Toilers are influenced by bands of the late 60’s and 70’s, including Led Zeppelin and The Doors resulting in a blend or rock, foot stomping and riff driven blues. The band have ‘…. a strong connection to The Doors in our music, Ray Manzarek’s organ, Robby Krieger’s guitar and Jim Morrison’s voice that will haunt my soul until my last days’ Roger Thomson, TheToilers. I totally relate to this as I too get intoxicated by Jim Morrison’s vocals and lyrics. With one album released in 2019, Out Of The Darkness, some singles and a few well produced
videos, The Toilers are definitely worth listening to if you like the Blues. Their latest project that they are working on is a new music video, MISS MERCY. With insufficient funds to produce the music video, the band reached out to their fans by setting up an Indie go go campaign. Anyone who contributed to this, were rewarded with different perks and even given a shout out on social media platforms. I love to support whenever possible and was really happy and excited to do so. I can’t wait to see
the finished video, if it’s anything like the Banshee Betty music video, where the gorgeous actor Robert Sheehan was featured, then I’m certain it won’t be a disappointment. There’s something about hearing the Blues that makes me want to jump on a plane and travel to New Orleans, the heart and soul of the Blues and southern grooves....... one day soon hopefully! The Toilers can be found on all music and social media platforms. 33

SMALL GARDEN IDEAS
Just because you have a small garden or terrace doesn’t mean you can’t turn it into something beautiful and stylish. Here are award winning landscape designer Pip Probert’s tips…..

ry porcelain tiles, they are available in so many colours and natural effect patterns, you really are spoilt for choice. It makes it easy to match your interior. Virtually non-absorbent, porcelain paving is very popular – we find most of our client love the contemporary look, but also the fact that they are practical and easy to clean! We often use larger tiles to clad raised planters, built in seating and unsightly existing low walling, giving a clean and tidy finish. Arbors and pergolas are classic small yard landscaping ideas and great ways to frame a view, but you can do the same with small plants and pieces of furniture Create a small path so the space feels larger, it also divides the landscape making it attractive and restful.

WILDLIFE
By Marios Papageorgiou
T
he Mediterranean Monk Seal is currently the most endangered marine mammal species in the Mediterranean and the rarest species in the world with around 19 individuals currently in Cyprus. Some of the major threats to this majestic animal are: tourist activities and related marine recreational practices, increased urbanisation levels in surrounding areas, the loss and destruction of their habitats and overfishing of their prey. It has been recently recategorised from Critically Endangered to Endangered on the IUCN Red List global assessment due to the increase in population size over the last few years.
A recent study conducted between 2009 and 2018, showed a very promising future for the species in Cyprus. Since 2009 the number of sightings of the Mediterranean monk seal have increased with most sightings recorded as juveniles and adults and only 5 per cent of sightings being new-born pups. Until 2009, it was believed that the species was close to extinction here. The increased recent sightings of pups, juveniles and adults over the last years and the
suitability of habitat on the island indicates that there is a permanent population of the Mediterranean monk seal in Cyprus. Interactions between fisheries and marine mammals have been reported throughout the world often causing some serious adverse effects on the conservation of certain species. These interactions are mostly caused due to depredation of the catch by marine mammals often causing these animals to unintentionally get caught on fishing gear. More details at https:// enaliaphysis.org.cy/ resources/
The species was first officially reported in Cyprus in 1959 and since then, the population has steadily declined. Field surveys that were conducted in 1997 and between 20052006 identified suitable habitat for the species in Cyprus but did not record any reproductive activity. 37
