THE ONLY WAY IS ST HELENS!
professional and I am going to get this right and the audience it going to love this panto.
TOWIE STAR AMY CHILDS TO APPEAR IN ST HELENS THEATRE ROYAL’S CHRISTMAS PANTO, ALADDIN
Are you going to sing? (Laughs) Oh no, god no, I can’t sing, at all. I wouldn’t put the audience through that, no no no.
The Only Way is Essex star Amy Childs will be bringing dazzling beauty and glamour to St Helens Theatre Royal when she appears in Aladdin, from Saturday, 3rd December 2016 to Sunday, 8th January 2017.
You’re playing the Slave of the Ring, do you like your character? Oh god yes, it’s perfect really. I am playing myself but in a fabulous costume and headdress – so how far can I go wrong? I do love my character, it’s good to play fun characters, it’s me, but an extreme me.
Amy Childs, will be starring as the Slave of the Ring in the magical family pantomime while Harry Derbridge will play the hilarious PC Noddle. Amy chatted to our editor Joy Lewis about her glamous costume, learning lines and how much she is looking forward to her first pantomime. Hi Amy, how are you? Oh great, thank you for asking. This headdress that I’m wearing for my character in Aladdin, is really heavy, it’s giving me a headache – but it’s so amazing, that I don’t want to take it off. My whole costume is amazing, I love it, it’s so glamorous. Have you been to see St Helens Theatre Royal yet? Yes I have, and I love it, it’s beautiful in there. Seeing it makes me look forward to Aladdin even more. Is this your first panto? Yes, I’ve never done panto in my life, so I’m really nervous. But I’m so excited this is really different than what I normally do in my life – I’m a busy girl and learning my lines is going to be difficult, I can’t really act to be honest, people think I’m an actress but I’m not, TOWIE isn’t scripted which always surprises people. The last script I learnt was as school, if you walk into my house there are post it notes everywhere with my lines, but you know I’m a

Will you be staying in the area or doing lots of traveling back and forth? Nope, no traveling, it will be too much I think. So, I’m in Liverpool for the whole month, my family will be joining me for some of it , and I’ve got a group of them coming up on Boxing Day so it’s all going to be fun. Plus I really like Liverpool for nights out, so I’m going to enjoy it up here I think. So could this be the future for you, do you like the idea of theatre? Never say never. I really like to try new things, I thought I would be terrified but I’m not. I do like the idea of theatre though so you never know. Everybody has been so nice, we are all preparing to work really hard to make this panto work, and it’s something I am really enjoying so far. But if this is the only panto I ever do I know it will have been a fabulous experience. Aladdin runs at St Helens Theatre Royal from Sat 3 Dec 2016 – Sun 8 January 2017.

Liverpool’s star turn as Fantastic Beasts hits cinemas Liverpool doubles as New York in what is one of the most hotly anticipated films of 2016. The wizarding world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, has hit the big screen, with Liverpool taking a starring role in J.K. Rowling’s screenwriting debut, made by Warner Bros Studios. The movie is a new adventure set in 1926, just as Newt Scamander, played by Oscar winning Eddie Redmayne, completes a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Liverpool Film Office was instrumental in securing the city’s role as the only none-studio location. In the first of the five film franchise two of the city’s iconic buildings, Cunard Building and St George’s Hall, play a leading role.

St George’s Hall and the Cunard Building gave us exactly what we wanted, and the people there, the city itself was so supportive, and the film office was incredible. It was a great experience.” When quoted for an Oh My God Britain campaign, lead actor Eddie Redmayne, said: “My OMGB moment was probably shooting in Liverpool. That’s a city that I just love and I find endlessly inspiring for its history and for its architecture and we had the most wonderful time there.” For more information about Liverpool Film Office, visit www.liverpoolfilmoffice.tv

White Christmas LiverpooL WiLL be baCk this year at the titaniC hoteL White Christmas Liverpool will be back this year at the Titanic Hotel, ensuring hundreds of people don’t have to spend Christmas Day alone. Now in its fourth year, the event brings together those who would otherwise be isolated and facing a lonely day. The function is hosted by a team of volunteers who give up their own Christmas, transporting guests and sharing an afternoon of festive food and entertainment. White Christmas Liverpool was under threat last year when funding problems meant it had to leave its previous venue, St George’s Hall. But the Titanic stepped in to save the day by donating its Rum Warehouse to hold a party for

500, and the hotel has repeated its offer this year. Thanks to support from caterers, Fare Share Liverpool, Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation and a St Helens farmer who has donated all the fresh vegetables, guests will be treated to a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings followed by live music. “Some people are isolated because their family have moved away, they’ve had a bereavement, or maybe they just choose to be, but everyone is treated with respect and dignity whatever reason they’re there. “We had an email from one man asking if it was on this year and he said ‘please can I come again, I was treated like a king last year’, and just that one sentence made such a difference. That’s what we do it for.”
the easiest to pick up either. So, why not start a family tradition this year, by walking to your local butchers to pick up your pre-ordered turkey or goose or ham for that matter, on Christmas Eve? Not only will you have the feel good factor of shopping locally, but you can ask your butcher to prepare the turkey exactly how you want it – whole bird, breast or turkey crown – and the butcher always has the best advice on how to cook it and for how long! Plus if you really want to ensure the all-important turkey is in the best possible condition for Christmas Day dinner, then local is the only true choice. Most farm shops and grocers source the majority of their produce from local farms and producers so you can be sure it’s travelled from plot to plate in the shortest possible time.
Christmas day dinner, for many, is the most important meal of the year. It’s the meal we all worry over getting right, and it’s probably the most costly meal of the year too - no wonder we want Christmas dinner to be the best possible quality, to ensure the most important meal of the year has the wow factor it rightly deserves. How about shopping locally for your festive fodder? Supermarket mass produced food is not always the cheapest, and it’s not always

Restaurant owner Mahesh Regmi has worked in some of London’s top establishments where he’s welcomed celebrities and society’s elite: “But no matter who came into any restaurant I worked in, the service was always the same – the best, and that’s what I want to bring to The Mexican House. Although he has co-owned restaurants before, The Mexican House Bar & Grill in Queens Drive, West Derby, is the first solo venture for Nepalese-born father of two Mahesh, 45. It will offer mouth-watering Mexican food from albondigas and enchiladas, nachos and burritos, chipotle chicken and chilli. There’s even a signature fajita dish with hot sizzling strips of marinated beef, chicken and prawn sautéed with mixed capsicum, onion and mushroom, served with warm tortillas, crispy salad, guacamole, sour cream and salsa.
The menu has been created by Mexican chef Deepak Khadka, and Mahesh can’t wait to share the dishes and five-star service with diners. “The food is outstanding, but a meal is about more than just what is on the plate,” says Mahesh. “If that’s all you want, why not just get a takeaway? It’s about the ambience of the restaurant and the experience. We take people’s coats, we offer magic hot towels which they create at their tables, we want to see children here – we offer them balloons and lollipops – and we want everyone, their friends and families, to have fun.”

EvErton in thE Community Full steam ahead For everton u-23 duo as they swap training ground For train station Kirkdale train station has been turned blue after it was officially adopted by Everton Free School. Everton Under 23 stars Jonjoe Kenny and Callum Connolly joined students from Everton Free School to help finish off a new Everton themed garden at the station. A group of students from the school have formed a project team alongside staff from Merseyrail to come up with designs and plans as to how best to improve the look and feel of the station for daily commuters and match-goers. And local lads Kenny and Connolly wasted no time in rolling up their sleeves to join the students in a spot of gardening as well as some renovation work at the station before they found out more about other station adoption projects that Merseyrail run across Merseyside. Situated less than a mile from Goodison Park, Kirkdale station is used by over 3,000 Evertonians every home game and the station adoption project will see the Merseyrail station rejuvenated with a blue garden, a new seating area and improved signage. The adoption of Kirkdale station is just part of the Club and charity’s continued commitment to its work with the Blue Mile surrounding Goodison Park. 2015 saw the Club and EitC appoint a Neighbourhood Manager to enable and assist us in becoming a better neighbour to the 10,000+ residents living in the Blue Mile surrounding Goodison Park.
40
A Premier League first, the role supports the award-winning work of Everton in the Community by linking into our core community surrounding the residential stadium area. Eight students from Everton Free School first got involved with the project as part of their ongoing work with The Prince’s Trust and the commitment to adopting Kirkdale will see them visit the station on a weekly basis to maintain the garden. Everton U-23s captain Kenny said: “I’ve used this station many times and a lot of my friends and family use it on a match day when they’re coming to Goodison so it’s great that it will have an Everton look and feel to it. “The fantastic work that we do in the community is embedded into us all at Everton and its key for the lads and I to get out as often as possible and get involved in these projects delivered by Everton in the Community and Everton Free School.” Sally Ralston, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager from Merseyrail, said: “Everton Football Club is at the heart of the local community in this area so it really is fantastic to see them adopting their local train station. “We
run
station
adoption schemes across the Merseyrail network and many of them are now award-winning stations thanks to the dedication of the incredible volunteers. We hope the new look Kirkdale station will be embraced by local people, both blue and red alike.” Merseyrail is one of the most punctual and reliable railway networks in the UK and is a community minded, socially responsible business with a proactive contribution to the improvement and well-being of the environment and its local community. The organisation in partnership with Merseytravel has been involved in station adoption projects across Merseyside since the start of the concession in 2003. They now have over two thirds of their 66 stations involved in station adoption schemes or community partnerships. The work undertaken at these stations brings significant benefits to local communities, the local environment and to the rail industry.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well so it should do, it’s December! Mind you, I was in the festive spirit in October filming Christmas specials of ‘Crafty Beggars In The House’, the first of which will be aired 29th November at 8pm. Episode 2 9th December at 7pm and Episode 3 17th December at 3.30pm. They are repeated all through December! Forget the Queen’s speech on the 25th, it’s back to back ‘Crafty Beggars’. Well it’s been a busy old month here. So excited about Santa emptying his sack at Casa Macca. I’m just back from the lovely Denise Welch’s annual ball for the GEM appeal. An amazing night set in a mock up of Central Park in New York. Denise’s passion for this charity is evident and wonderful to see. An amazing £50,000 was raised last year, so hoping to raise the same if not more this year. Apart from having a slowy with her lovely dad Vin, I also met up with the garjus Anne Twist. Anne is Harry Styles mum who helped to arrange for Harry to call little Jessica Whelan who has since passed away at 4 years of age. Also had an intimate moment with Steve McDonald aka Simon Gregson and the beautiful Kym Marsh. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year! See you in 2017. Bev X

nter i w r o f p u f Puf by Natalie Morris
Taking me back to my school years The Puffer Coat has re-emerged this season in every shape, colour and crop imaginable. Everyone has once owned one of these coats and they usually end up at the back of your wardrobe when the temptation for a more updated, sleeker and lightweight alternative jacket is desired.
Therefore the puffer coat was then considered a last resort, the emergency option for bad weather. The Puffer Coat has made a chic comeback dominating the Autumn/Winter runways including New York adding volume and dimension to any look. This big and bulky piece which was once renowned as a fashion no-no, may well be the cosiest and easiest trend to pull off this season styled with fur trimmed hoods and new ways to wear them. Designers such as Demna Gvasalia presented his first Ready to Wear fall 2016 collection for Balenciaga catering for our casual and practical lifestyles in need for inherently functional fashion. Gvasalia proposed ski puffer jackets in a contemporary way by encouraging the bulky element on the coats by constructing oversized collars and then contrasting the design by styling the sleeves off the shoulder,
44
creating a rounded shape on the sleeves. However A l e x a n d e r Mcqueen took a more elegant approach to the puffer coat in a high shine rose pink blanket type coat. Stella McCartney pulled out all the stops expanding the puffers possibilities by creating a long length coat made in velvet. The beauty of this coat is that it is an occurring fashion trend which just keeps improving each time and it’s limitless in terms of its fashion quality. The Puffer Coat is seen as high couture fashion but it’s also no stranger to the high street without losing its qualities. If you’re not afraid of a little extra volume then go full length for added dimension. Or if you’re petite and you want to maintain femininity opt for a standard or cropped length that’s cinched in at the waist for a sleeker appeal.
Need a stylist for a photoshoot or event drop Natalie a message and see what she can do to help you stand out! Nataliejane92@live.co.uk

The STar The Big Brilliant Music Hall Show at the Liverpool Playhouse this Christmas In 1866 a star was born on Williamson Square. Up and down the country Music Hall entertainment was entrancing, scandalising and tickling the masses, becoming a popular phenomenon that was to endure into the twentieth century. And so the Playhouse theatre (as it was to become) began packing them in as The Star Music Hall. A big, brilliant Music Hall show, The Star will mark Liverpool Playhouse’s 150th anniversary this Christmas in honour of its origins as a Music Hall venue. Opening on 9 December with performances through to 14 January, The Star is packed full of classic songs like The Old Bull and Bush, The Marrow Song and The Boy I Love Is Up In The Gallery, and with more than a few magic tricks up its sleeve. Built in 1866, The Star Music Hall established itself as a leading venue for variety and Music Hall acts of the day before becoming the Liverpool Repertory Theatre in 1911. The production will be directed by Philip Wilson, who returns to the Playhouse following The Norman Conquests and Noises Off. Written by Olivier Award-winning writer Michael Wynne (Hope Place, The Knocky), The Star celebrates the rich history of the theatre with onstage magic and backstage deception, a love story, a dastardly plot and all manner of drama and mayhem in the wings. In 2014 Michael Wynne’s Hope Place played to packed houses and great acclaim at the Everyman and now another piece of Liverpool history has inspired his work. Renowned Liverpool actor Michael Starke (Brookside, Channel 4; The Royal, ITV) returns to the Playhouse having previously appeared in Breezeblock Park and The Play What I Wrote among many others.
46
Michael Starke said: “I’m so happy to be back at Liverpool Playhouse in this, its 150th anniversary year, and to be appearing in The Star. Michael Wynne’s new play which celebrates that anniversary. I made my professional debut on this very stage in Cavern Of Dreams in 1984 and my last appearance here was in Breezeblock Park in 2003. It’s good to be back.” The ensemble cast also includes, Eithne Browne (Tartuffe; Blood Brothers, Liverpool Playhouse), Michelle Butterly (Noughts and Crosses, RSC; Benidorm, ITV), Helen Carter (Once Upon A Time at the Adelphi; No Wise Men, Liverpool Playhouse), Kevin Harvey (The Book of Mormon, West End; Decade, Headlong), Danny O’Brien (Bouncers; Stags and Hens, Royal Court Liverpool) and Jack Rigby (Waterloo Road, BBC; Hitchhiker’s Guide of Fazakerley, Royal Court Liverpool). The Star promises to be a right old knees-up, where you can sing-a-long to Music Hall favourites, as you laugh, cry and laugh again. Visit the Playhouse from 9 December to 14 January for a big, brilliant treat of a show.

BeyOnd p e t S e On Before Bob Marley spread the gospel of reggae music (literally meaning ‘the king’s music’ ie King Haile Selassie of Ethiopia aka King Tafari or Ras Tafari) around the world; there was the music of The Prince. Cecil Bustamente Campbell was a pioneering grandmaster of the first wave of Jamaican music to conquer the world; Ska. Prince Buster, as he would become famous, earned his name and his reputation as a successful professional street-fighter in the brutal and violent shanty towns of post-independent Kingston. He learned about the music business as head of security for the legendary Clement ‘Coxonne’ Dodd’s soundsystem and it was only his refused entry into the USA in order to buy R&B records for his own fledgling soundsystem in 1961 that led him into a recording studio to make the kind of music that he wanted to hear his soundsystem play. The rest is musical history. Prince Buster made some of the greatest good-time dance music that there has ever been. It had a strong element of social commentary at a time when even Bob Dylan was still only playing tiny bars in Greenwich
Village. It portrayed the tough reality of ‘Orange Street’, the politically endorsed world of street gangs on which Prince Buster was both literally born and earned his stage name. It was among the first music to reference black social champions like Muhammad Ali and when it made its way to Britain it brought black and white youth together for the first time in a social context of appreciation and unity when overt racism was an everyday and socially acceptable part of our national culture. The British Ska revival of the early 80s and its ethos of racial harmony and social commentary were hugely influenced by the great man and his music. The Specials and especially Madness would never have existed without him. Although he wasn’t as famous as Prince or David Bowie or his great friend, Muhammad Ali, the passing, the legacy and the name of Prince Buster belongs up there with them. ‘The years go by as quickly as you wink, enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think’ -Prince Buster (24th May 1938 – 8th September 2016)

2016 marks 20 years since Kula Shaker exploded into the UK Britpop Scene with their million selling debut album K. Their brand of rock with an esoteric mix of psychedelic riffs and ideas, full of Eastern mysticism and full-tilt performances made them the most unique (often termed eccentric) of the Britpop bands in the Nineties. 2016 has seen the band back performing and every review of their live shows today still revere their energy and intense live performances, as witnessed at the Roundhouse earlier this year and subsequent dates. ‘Govinda’ sung entirely in Sanskrit and the only Sanskrit top 10 UK single ever, is still chanted by the crowds that attend the shows. ‘Tattva’, ‘Hey Dude’, through to the hit single ‘Hush’ are all explosive tunes binding everyone in anarchic pogoing unity as the years fall away. Kula Shaker play Arts Club, Liverpool on Wednesday 14th December 2016

Hello Lifestyle Readers, Since the last time I checked in with you all I have been quite busy. I was honoured to be asked to ‘cut the ribbon’ so to speak, for a new £1.5 million construction centre at S tourbridge College. While I was there I got to interact with the students by setting them three practical challenges. The first was to create a game of optical illusion out of wood, the second to rewire a plug and finally carry out fabrication of pipework. The students all seemed to enjoy the master classes and overall it was a great day, and I have high hopes that creativity will buzz around the centre. Along a similar theme I also spent some time at the National Construction Academy (NCA) in Derby which was opened earlier this year. The centre allows apprentices to complete their programmes over 12 months and perfect their skills in the construction industry. The centre is an open door of opportunity for the students and it is always a pleasure seeing establishments such as these helping nurture young people’s futures. So we are experiencing harsh winds and frosty mornings which means one thing, winter is officially upon us. With this in mind I was asked to take part in a radio day in association with E.ON Energy. I spent the day in a studio giving advice to listeners on how they can prepare their homes for winter. I covered everything from filling gaps around external pipes to advising on the right insulation to use. It really is an important issue, and simple draft management around windows and doors for example could save you between £40-£160 in energy costs. I also took part in a live TV makeover with Ideal World and Wagner which was streamed on Facebook and Instagram too. A lot of you have also been enjoying and viewing my ‘how to’ videos for Silverline Tools – keep watching and commenting guys! I will check in with you all again next month, but for now please enjoy one of my DIY tips!
INSULATE & BOX IN EXTERNAL PIPES In the case of frozen pipes, prevention is the key. To avoid the misery and expense of ruptured pipes, it’s as simple as insulating your external pipes and boxing them in. Begin by cladding all visible pipe work with pipe insulation. This usually comes in both 15mm and 22mm diameter and can be cut with a trimming knife or scissors. Next, you will need to secure wooden battens to the wall, just above and below your pipes. Cut your 2”x1” timber battens the same length as your pipe work and using your drill driver and a wood drill bit, drill a pilot hole though the timber battens. Holding your timber battens in place mark your brickwork so you know exactly where you need to drill the holes and using a masonry drill bit, drill into your brickwork. Now, insert rawl plugs and screw the battens firmly to the wall above and below your pipes. Measure the distance between the timber battens fixed above and below your pipes, and cut your plywood down to size. Again, drill some pilot holes using a wood drill bit and use screws to secure the plywood firmly to the battens. Your pipes should now be covered and protected from the cold weather.
All the best,
