BUSINESS BRIEFINGS BOOMING
A
Liverpool project which gives free advice to people who want to start their own business has helped more than 1,600 budding entrepreneurs since it began life. Over the past five years, Deputy Mayor Cllr Gary Millar has been sharing his business knowledge with self-starting city dwellers through a regular series of advice drop-in clinics at Liverpool’s Central Library. Cllr Millar has been joined by a series of guest experts who regularly pass on their knowledge, wisdom and experience to the eager audiences. More than 1,600 people popping-in for pointers since they began. Cllr Millar and his team have also supported 192 business advice meetings and that 40 per cent of those taking advantage of the sessions were female entrepreneurs. A quarter of all those who turned up for advice were from the city’s

black and minority ethnic communities and 23 per cent of budding business brains were under 35. Half of all those people seeking advice were planning to start their own business. Entrepreneur-in-residence is part of the Central
Library’s Business and IP Centre – which gives residents access to a wealth of free information and support. The drop-in sessions take place every Thursday between 1pm and 4pm at the library and on the first Saturday of every month.
Cllr Millar said: “It’s been a great year for business in Liverpool and we have been excited to see so many bright, enthusiastic entrepreneurs coming to see us at the library’s Business and Intellectual Property Centre, the BIPC, in search of the boost they may need to get their business grow and under way. Interestingly they don’t just come from Liverpool but as far afield as Yorkshire and Wales! Thank you to them all for taking that bold step in reaching out for help. “I must also thank our volunteer unpaid specialist mentors for their amazing help week in and week out for the last five years. Plus of course, I thank our wonderful library and BIPC staff for supporting our businesses every day of the week. In addition, what is really pleasing this year is we are seeing an increasingly diverse range of people popping in for guidance. It shows our city’s dynamic make up and gives us great signs for a promising future for our city. “We urge anyone who aspires to start up a new business and wants help growing their existing business in 2020 to drop in to one of our sessions any Thursday at Central Library between 1pm and 4pm.”

LEE SEDDON,
founder of Boogie Storm In an exclusive interview with Amanda Moss
L
ee Seddon is a household name in Liverpool. The firefighter, who founded Boogie Storm, appeared on Britain’s Got Talent UK and USA and received the golden buzzer from Simon Cowell in both shows and now has the world at his feet, having taking his dance group around the world.
could have their pics taken before the Star Wars movie. But then the company went bust and I was left with these costumes. My friends owned a party business hiring characters out so we started to do that to claw some money back from the money I lost . I told my friends and they laughed at me saying it would never take off.”
Lee started Boogie Storm after staging charity events through the fire service. He put on duck race in Liverpool and raised 100,000. And with his love of entertaining children he thought about setting up his own business. He had friend who was organising drive in movie theatres in Manchester and he approached him with a proposal for Liverpool for drive through cinemas. The idea proved lucrative and Lee worked this for three years before sensing unease with his business partner. He said, “I knew something wasn’t might and had a couple of storm trooper costumes so kids
Undeterred Lee built more Storm Trooper consumes and sent them off to functions as meet and greet dancers. He said, Myfriends just laughed at me saying ‘ we just cant see it, and I was like, you will.”
8
His first break was when he went to Matthew street one afternoon and two of his friends came with me for a laugh and they filmed me dancing along with an Italian busker in the costume. Le said, “Someone posted it to the Echo website and asked who the mystery storm trooper dancer. They tracked me down to my facebook page and
ran an interview with me, and during that interview I actually said that I wanted to put together up a storm trooper dance group.” Lee contacted a few well known dance group organisers and but was turned down for help. “They couldn’t see my vision” he said. Now of course they’re kicking themselves. Since appearing on BGT Lee, who has Simon Cowell’s personal phone number stored in his mobile, is headhunted to perform at events around the world. And fortunately for us he’s appearing at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards on 29 February for an exclusive performance. He said, “We go all around the world but we’ve never done anything in our home town so it’s time to show Liverpool what we’re about and show people that I had that dream, that passion and I took it on the biggest journey ever” Next for Boogie Storm is America’s Got Talent The Champions and then who knows? The world is their battlestar.

LIVERPOOL AIRPORT
L
iverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA)is currently undergoing a public consultation as part of the modernisation of the UK’s airspace, which will involve potential changes to the routes taken by aircraft departing from and arriving at the airport. The UK’s airspace is some of the most complex in the world, yet has not undergone significant change since the 1950s. The Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) plan to modernise UK airspace in order to deliver quicker, quieter and cleaner journeys by air in and around the UK and to accommodate future aviation growth, with flight paths having to be redrawn in a coordinated way.
Airport has set out various options to illustrate how the flight paths of aircraft operating to or from the Airport in the skies above North West England and North Wales, might change in the future as part of this airspace modernisation. The area covered by possible changes to flight paths of aircraft relating to LJLA, reaches to South Lancashire in the North, Warrington in the East, Mid-Cheshire in the South and across to Flintshire in the West. Consequently, the Airport is keen that members of the public who live within areas that may potentially be affected by such changes to aircraft
flight paths, participate in the consultation. Two open days will be held at the Airport over the coming weeks as part of the consultation; one on Wednesday 12th February and the other on Saturday 7th March with representatives from the Airport on hand to discuss the potential impact of any proposed flight path changes. Further information regarding how to participate in the consultation is available on the airport’s website: www.liverpoolairport. com/airspacechange
As a consequence, airports across the UK will all be consulting with local communities and other airspace users about potential changes to their departure and arrival routes. The consultation that will last until Thursday 9th April 2020 and Liverpool John Lennon

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED A TRIP TO NORWAY?
I
recently took my eldest daughter, Honey on a king weekend break to see the Northern lights. Flying from Liverpool was no easy feat. We had to take a flight from Manchester to Also, then onto Bergen until we reached our final destination, Tromso, a small town within the arctic circle just 350km from the north pole. This was so far out of my comfort zone! I loathe the cold but armed with a rucksack of thermals and a new coat to block out extreme elements I was ready to face new challenges. Our first hiccup was the delayed flight due to snow blizzards which meant we missed our first night in the hotel in Tromso Upon arrival 15 hours later, we booked the most popular tours: Northern Lights Chaser and the Husky Sledding.. We explored the small town of quaint independent shops but were just browsing - Norway is notoriously
expensive (£15 for a fridge magnet, £14 for a small glass of wine, £5 for a packet of peanut M & Ms) In the evening we headed on the northern lights tour, a trip lasting seven hours with a small group of tourists like us and a guide who drove us to remote parts of the area looking for clearings in the sky to glimpse the aurora borealis. Sadly the skies were too filled with snow and ice but this did allow us to have a fantastic snowball fight set against some of the most breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen. Heading back in the early hours we managed a short catnap before embarking on the husky sledding. This was one of the best experiences and touched Honey so much so that she's applied for a summer job there. 300 dogs are raised at this family run dog retreat. We rode sleds
through the beautiful mountains and fjords before enjoying reindeer stew and chocolate cake by the fire in a warm yurt. Perpetual darkness made us feel tired all weekend, the “light” was for four hours and I’d compare it to a 4pm daylight in winter in the UK. This payed havoc with our boy clocks as we were permanently ready for sleep. But we didn’t. On our last night we enjoyed a sauna and rooftop jacuzzi overlooking the mountains before taking the Fjellheisen cable car 420 m above sea level.Did I mention I was terrier of heights? But standing on the top of a mountain knee deep in snow having overcome so many fears- heights, the cold, darkness I felt elated. Norway was spiritually enlightening, a weekend away I wouldn’t normally contemplate but a real eye opener and a wonderful opportunity to discover myself. 17

FEBRUARY 29 IS BACHELOR’S DAY
B
achelor’s Day originated as an Irish tradition that allowed women to initiate dances and propose marriage on Leap Day (as opposed to the tradition of men proposing to women and asking them out to dance). If the man reused the proposal, he was then obligated to buy the woman a silk gown or 12 pairs of gloves.
Presumably for the woman to then strange him ! But apparently, the intention behind the winter wear is that they can hide the woman’s embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. The right of every women to propose on 29th February each leap year goes back hundreds of years when the leap year day had no recognition in
English law (the day was ‘leapt over’ and ignored, hence the term ‘leap year’). It was decided that the day had no legal status, meaning that a break in tradition on this day was acceptable. So on this day, women can take advantage of this anomaly and propose to the man they wish to marry. In Scotland however, to ensure success they should also wear a red petticoat under their dress – and make sure that it is partly visible to the man when they propose.

THE MONTH OF LOOOVE.
S
o it’s the official month of love. Paper hearts, cards, ‘boy did good’ face book statuses. Engagements. Love love love. But what about you? Just stop for one second what your doing an ask yourself ‘Do I love myself?’ Not just this month. But every month. What’s your answer? I used to think self love was all abit woo an you have to braid your hair an wear daisy chains for that but it turns out - you don’t. Hoorah! As fun as skipping in fields chanting self love sounds for me it’s a no go. I’m not one for ‘I love myself’ affirmations. I’m an action girl. Let’s actually fall in love with ourselves instead of trying to believe we do!! Whose in? Self love is about actually loving YOU. not as you want to be or strive to be. But you. Now. Right this second.

We believe we aren’t enough until we lost the belly, buy the bag, have perfect hair. Reality check - you are enough now. What does loving yourself look like to you? It’s different for us all. Mine was learning to know that my stomach will never be flat, so why am I so worried that it’s not? Answer - I’m not now. It’s part of me an I love my body. I still want to work on it, but it’s not essential to me feeling like I’m worthy. I take myself for lunches. Wear nice perfume because I deserve it. I buy the £30 fake tan because it’s my favourite. I just love me. I’m funny, I’ve got a smart mouth, I’m a good friend an good an my job. I’m not perfect an I’m not trying to be. Nor should you. So tell me- what does self love look like for you? How can you be loved by you? You’re amazing.

SIAN REEVES talks about
playing Helen Forrester’s Mother in Spring UK Tour 2020 of By The Waters Of Liverpool – and why she feels at home on the cobbles of Coronation Street.
S
ian’s role is a testing and challenging role portraying a strong woman affected by her life, and that of her family being turned upside down. By The Waters Of Liverpool Spring 2020 UK Tour opens on Tuesday 3 March at the New Brighton Floral Pavilion in Wirral – just a few miles from where acclaimed author Helen Forrester was born. The 11-week national tour will visit 17 venues across the country and follows a hugely successful run at the Liverpool Empire Theatre in October 2018, when the new production was premiered to rave reviews. Sian said: “Celia Forrester, who I play, is a wonderfully complex person. From money, status and class before the great depression of the 1930s, to then losing everything and being
26
dumped in a damp bug infested house with one cold water tap, and one toilet – with seven children to look after. She absolutely cannot shake herself out of the nightmare that is now her new life. She is stunned that her husband, who once held a senior position in the financial world, cannot find work and they have to grovel for handouts from the local parish.” “To escape the confines of their now smelly, claustrophobic house, she leaves the day-to-day running of the family to her 11-year-old daughter Helen, which manifests itself and show her as a very strict and uncaring woman. Helen actually said of her mother, ‘her bouts of temper bordered on insanity’ – it really shows just how exhausted and dreadfully depressed she is. It’s a great role to play.”
Sian can currently be seen appearing in Coronation Street, where she plays Charlie Wood, the wife Tim Metcalfe didn’t know he had. They married some years ago on a whim after meeting in Las Vegas – however Tim presumed it was a spoof wedding. Until now when he realises the drunken ceremony was actually legally binding. Fearful of being charged with bigamy, Tim tracks Charlie down and asks for a divorce. But things don’t quite go to plan when Charlie arrives in The Street. The new touring production of By The Waters Of Liverpool is again produced by Pulse Records Limited in association with Bill Elms and is directed by Gareth Tudor Price.

lready in 2020 and it seems to be flying by with panto at The Stiwt Theatre in Wrexham seeming somewhat years away ! I’m already looking forward to Christmas 2020 in my home town of Southport with LHK Productions at our new home The Atkinson in Southport, and after 27 pantomimes – this will be the first time I’ve waved my wand as the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. Tickets are selling fast at this fantastic venue so make sure you book your tickets early theatkinson. co.uk New Years Eve was spent with the last show of Aladdin at The Stiwt, and then letting in a new decade singing at Champs in Ainsdale where I do a residency, and it was so lovely that so many of my family, friends and locals turned up and we could all be together at midnight. Sometimes just a night away can make a huge difference and having worked all over Christmas – it was nice to be able to get away with just the

kids and I, back at the Bryn Howell Hotel in North Wales where we got to spend some quality time together. I love going there as there is a real “family feel” to it and it was great to just chill and play cards, and watch TV and have a walk around Llangollen. I was also shocked and delighted to receive a nomination for the 3rd time for the Lifestyle Awards for Social Media Personality 2020 – I am up against some amazing people who do so much in the City and not holding my hopes out – but – wow – to do a hat trick would be incredible! Regardless of the outcome I am looking forward to hosting the Awards on the 29th and I think my boyfriend is quite happy that I’m occupied that evening so that I don’t throw in a proposal with it being a leap year! It’s also been great to get back into a routine at my job as Community Fundraiser for Whiston & St Helens Hospitals’ Charity and plan events for the coming year – including
a “Forget me Not Ball” at the Totally Wicked Stadium to raise awareness for Dementia, Celebrity football match against members of the Trust and a number of other events in the Community to raise funds for these 2 amazing hospitals who’s staff work tirelessly to brighten the lives of patients. If you are interested in any of these events or fundraising – please do not hesitate to contact me claire.simmo@ sthk.nhs.uk it would be great to hear from you! Expecting a few changes to my radio career in 2020 – but nonetheless – sometimes changes come for a reason and can only bring better things – watch this space – and see you at the Awards on the 29th for one hell of a party with the woman who gets more beautiful and determined by the day – Amanda Moss!

How the Hell Do I Become an Instagram Influencer, Anyway? Love ‘em or hate ‘em (and hide our post likes if you must), but Instagram influencers aren’t going anywhere in 2020. We’re way too valuable to brands who can connect with their niche target audience. We’re way more cost-effective than most traditional marketing tactics, and for the most part, our followers trust our opinions on products or services we promote. How do I become an influencer, though? #1. Choose a niche in an industry you’re passionate about and follow Instagram users who fall into this category. For example, don’t just be another beauty influencer. Hone it down. Focus on something specific you’ve experienced like acne, thinning hair, or veganism.

WE LLB E ING
SAM FOLEY - YOGA S o as we delve into the deepest darkest winter where does the wellbeing come in? In January we make all kinds of commitments and unrealistic statements that place more pressure on us than the world leaders do in a year. But there could be a solution at hand instead of the self loathing and disappointment of the unrealistic new year resolutions and it’s simply by getting in rhythm with the seasons.
The 1st of February is known as Imbloc. This is the time when the promise of spring returns, the first sign is a snowdrop. The small white flower reminds us that Mother Earth is awakening, the seeds below are breaking open and starting their journey to the surface. Where there is life stirring underground ,there is new dreams of life stirring inside
of you too. The flames of passion are ignited from a soul level. Spring will be visible within six weeks. So it’s time to meditate and allow those ideas and inspiration to flow, gently not forced.
You start your journey again and you will see results by spring. Arise to your challenges, observe your patterns and be gentle with yourself.
Although it is cold and the days are short, it’s even more important to get out and receive the natural light. The mist as the cold fights to stay can be enchanting and metaphoric to us that even though we can’t quite seen results yet we can trust that the mist will rise.

Craig Phillips’ Monthly D I Y Welc ome Lifes tyle Read ers.. . Hello Lifestyle readers and Happy New Year to you all! I hope 2020 has got off to the best possible start for you all and you’ve not already broken those new year resolutions! It’s been an exciting January for me, and I’ve been working on several great projects. The one that perhaps stands out the most is something I worked on with the comedian Joe Lycett for his consumer show Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back. With many people getting caught out with fines at the Mersey Gateway Bridge, Joe wanted to draw attention to the toll bridge. I teamed up with Joe as well as fellow Liverpool based celebrities Atomic Kitten and Kim Woodburn for what I can only describe as one of the most random open top bus journeys of my life! We were also joined by Liverpool Show Choir and the Atomic Kitten girls changed the lyrics of their popular song Whole Again to ‘Toll Again’ to help raise awareness of the issue. It was a really fun day and something completely out of the blue! Keep your eyes peeled for when the show airs later this year! It wasn’t just a month of having fun though as me and Laura have been developing an exciting new project. Me and Laura have
been working on some Mr and Mrs DIY Workshops which we will be launching very soon. The workshops will take place in our studio and see us teach people who are looking to develop their DIY skills. As well as teaching these DIY skills we will also be focusing on upcycling and how people can reuse existing materials to create something new. I was also delighted to meet ‘Speedo Mick’ this month who is doing some great stuff for charity. If you haven’t heard of Mick or are aware of the work he does, he spends a lot of his time just in swimming trunks! To put it simply Mick takes part in challenges such as walking thousands of miles in just swimming trunks and a swimming hat which bares the badge of his beloved Everton FC. To date he has raised thousands of pounds for a number of charities. Keep going Mick we’re all behind you!
Craig ’s Montlh y Tip
Fitting additional door/locks Once you’ve chosen your lock, hold it in the desired position and mark the frame where the holes are on the lock. Using your drill driver and a standard drill piece, drill some pilot holes where you’ve made your pencil marks. This will ensure you don’t spilt the wooden or plastic frame you are fixing the locks to, and it will make life easier when you come to drive the screws in to fix the lock into place. Then change the drill bit in your drill/driver to turn it into a cordless screwdriver and start to firmly drive each screw into position ensuring no screws are loose. Once the main lock is in position, place the shoot bolt down, mark around it, and then drill a 12mm hole wide enough for the bolt to enter. Door and window lo cks are quite similar to fix in place, once you have successfully fitted one lock, the rest should be a doddle!
Finally, work continues on the Dream Build. It’s been a long process to get to this point but we’re not far away now. Thank you all for your support so far. All the best,
Craig Things you will need: • Cordless 14v drill/driver • 4 v lithium-ion screw driver • Materials • Shoot bolt locks • Window locks • Screws • Tape measure

Quidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur Sprinkling a bit of Latin into conversation is impressive, don’t you think? Especially if someone has to ask what it means or better still if they have to Google it. This little beauty is my favourite “Quidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur” ... I won’t make you Google it to find out what it means .. it translates to “whatever is said in Latin appears profound”. Yes, using Latin is pretty much just showing off ... it’s the antithesis of good communication. The language we use to get our message across is hugely important. I’ve sat in front of many presentations over the years and the ones that had the most impact always used everyday language. If you have ever have to do a presentation
or speak in public just think of Catchphrase. Yes, that TV gem from the eighties. It was Roy Walker back in my day and I think it’s Stephen Mulhern that hosts Catchphrase today ... the “say what you see” tag line has endured. The best way to communicate is in a simple, straightforward manner. Do you ‘Touch base’ with people? Or maybe you ‘Reach out’. These are the two most hated forms of office jargon according to a survey of employees conducted by Glassdoor. These are fairly tame examples but they are slightly irritating. But what about the dreaded acronym ... IMHO is a favourite of mine ... and by favourite I mean most

hated! For the those not familiar with IMHO it means In My Humble Opinion. But the H in this acronym is always redundant because when people are offering their opinion (often unsolicited) it is rarely with humility. Communication is your most essential business tool and if you get it right your reputation will go up ... conversely if you get it wrong your reputation may go down ... so always be as straightforward as you can ... and avoid showing off at all costs. Currently just awaiting 2nd album mix (recorded at world famous Parr St studios) then going out on Spring UK tour playing with Circa Waves and some headline shows of our own - playing the Mountford 42
Hall Liverpool which has already sold out (2200 capacity)
YOU’D HAD SOME RATHER BIG GIGS LAST SUMMER, WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT? Glastonbury definitely and being on the BBC - Even though we were competing with Kylie on another stage, it was rammed & everyone was singing also Huw Stephens Radio 1 DJ was ‘raving’ about us after and got pictures with us wearing one of our jackets Cos he wanted to join the band! Additionally, Sunmer Well festival in Bucharest Romania playing with The 1975 was amazing.
MOVING INTO AUTUMN WHAT’S THE PLAN? UK tour - 2nd album release - European dates and some USA shows before Xmas HAS LIFE TURNED OUT AS YOU EXPECTED SO FAR? We feel we have a real chance of breaking through onto the international stage - we have built things up organically without any hype just good tunes and made ourselves approachable to the people like us and kept our feet firmly on ‘Terra firma’ (as it should be). It costs nothing to be nice eh!!

S NOOK E R
KINGS OF SNOOKER SET FOR SOUTHPORT
S
outhport will host a snooker world ranking event for the first time in February when the Coral Players Championship comes to the town. The event will run from February 24th to March 1st in 2020 at the Southport Waterfront. Tickets are on sale now and start at just £15 – for details see www. wst.tv/tickets The Coral Players Championship features the leading 16 players on snooker’s one-year ranking list, after the last counting event which is the Shoot Out, so the line-up won’t be confirmed until February 23rd. As it stands, top stars including Judd Trump, Shaun Murphy, Mark Selby, Ding Junhui and John Higgins look set to qualify. Ronnie O’Sullivan won the title last season, beating Neil Robertson in the final. The match had a memorable finish as O’Sullivan made the 1,000th century break of his career in the last frame. The 16 players will start in a seeded draw, with a knockout format. All
46
matches will be best of 11 frames, until the final which is best of 19. It’s the second of three events in the Coral Series, preceded by the 32-man Coral World Grand Prix in Cheltenham (February 3-9) and followed by the eight-man Coral Tour Championship in Llandudno (March 1722). The player earning the most money across the series will receive the Coral Cup and a £100,000 bonus. All three events are televised live by ITV. Total prize money in Southport will be £385,000 with the winner to receive £125,000. A spokesman for WST said: “We are very excited about bringing this prestigious tournament to Merseyside for the first time. We know there’s a lot of support for snooker in the area so we’re expecting big crowds.” “The Southport Waterfront is a fantastic venue and it will be a superb stage for snooker’s biggest names.” “The Coral Players Championship will bring together 16 of the best
players on the planet. The great thing about the Coral Series is that all 128 tour players begin the season on zero as they start the race to qualify for the three lucrative events. So only those in form make it into the elite field.” “That race is well underway now and it will be fascinating to see whether all of the big names make it to Southport, or whether we get new faces and outsiders earning a place in the line-up.” “For fans in the area it’s fabulous news as it’s a chance to see live sport at its very best, and the value for money is exceptional.” Emma Lloyd, Head of Creative for Waterfront Southport said: “This is huge for the venue and the town. We are delighted to be working with the team at World Snooker to bring it to the Waterfront and we hope it’s the start of a great working relationship. The North West is known for its love of snooker and Southport is no different!”
