LIND.” William Shakepseare

If music be the food of love, if food is the way to another’s soul and poetry and literature are a way to love the world – then play, eat and read on because this, is the month of love. I have a confession to make, I am an incurable romantic. Let me explain. I was born on Valentine’s Day, my husband asked me to marry him on Valentine’s day and we got married as close to Valentine’s as I could get. As you can imagine, I am somewhat invested in this month. I was born with a leaning towards the extrovert, and from a young age I have always capitalised on this – romance in all its guises, has been my mainstay for many years as this was, and still is, my favourite way of standing out from the crowd. Why am I telling you this? Because I was asked recently what big things in life I will be teaching my twins. My reply was easy, my boys should embrace all literature and never follow the crowd. To me this advice is obvious, but to the listeners, it was like I had committed a social faux-pa. I was immediately inundated with questions from why not follow the crowd, to accusations of following my own path is just to be obtuse and only for confident people. Not true, you don’t have to be confident to stand out from the crowd, neither do you need to wear bright clothes or have the loudest voice in the pub. All you need to do is not blindly follow what others are doing around you, to read literature that not only supports but challenges your point of view. Being a free thinker is one of my biggest values, and one I will endeavour to pass on to my children. Besides, being a renegade, even a silent one, is good fun!

Womenwill be urged to‘Chuck the Ciggies’ at chucktheciggies. com/ which features local actress and presenter Gemma Brodrick and a series of films with local women Danielle, Amy, Ginny, and Hilary who all quit smoking, sharing their tips and advice and giving encouragement. Both sites will direct people towards Smokefree Liverpool, a free service in the city which already helps around 250 men and women a month give up smoking through one to one support and access to medicines that fight cravings. Former Liverpool FC star Jamie Carragher said:”If you pull on the shirt, you play to the final whistle. That’s the Liverpool way. You never give up – even in extra time. Last-ditch clearances make the difference. It’s the same whether you’re competing in the Champions League or kicking the ciggies. Never give up

giving up. Doing something big – for the sake of your health, your family or your finances – you’ve got to bring passion and motivation into play. Am I saying it’s easy? Never. The Kaiser (Didi Hamann) was a smoker, so I know how hard it is to quit. But if you get the SmokeFreeLiverpool team behind, you’ll never walk alone.” Hilary McElwee, who as a heavy smoker for years and features in the campaign, said: “My dad died from lung cancer, aged just 65. I’d been smoking 20-25 a day all my adult life. I thought if I wanted to be in with a chance for a longer, healthier life, the ciggies had to go.” People wanting to give up smoking can also get in touch with Smokefree Liverpool in the following ways: Phone: 0800 061 4212 Website:www.smokefreeliverpool.co.uk Email:info@smokefreeliverpool.co.uk

Last year BBC One’s hugely popular entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing returned with much anticipation to TV screens, once again TV audiences were treated to an exciting celebrity line-up all eager and vying to win the viewers’ vote. Who could forget when Ed Balls and his dance partner Katya Jones made TV gold and performed Gangnam Style? Who wasn’t wowed when Louise Redknapp and Kevin Clifton performed their Argentine Tango; let us not forget the nail biting, most closely 8fought final in the show’s history, where Ore

Oduba beat Louise Redknapp and Danny Mac to become King of the ballroom and lift the Glitterball Trophy. And Strictly’s Live Tour is no different - this is a must-see event for fans of all ages and brings the magic and excitement of the TV show to the live stage. This year’s tour stars TV Judges Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood. They will be joined on the judging panel by former Strictly professional dancer and winner of the 2006 series, Karen Hardy. The tour features a brand new host, Countryfile’s Anita Rani, who was a semi-finalist in the 2015 series and a contestant on last year’s live tour.

2016’s TV series line up as the rest of the country, I know that audiences in Liverpool are going to be in for a real treat. I can’t wait to bring the tour to them! ” Host Anita Rani said: “I had such a great experience on the series and the tour, that I jumped at the opportunity to come back and host the tour. I had a taster as tour host last year when I stood in for Mel Giedroyc, which was so much fun. I’m really looking forward to being back in front of the lovely Strictly audiences to celebrate 10 years on the road!” The judges will provide their invaluable wisdom, advice and scores at each performance on tour. But not only are the celebrities and their dance partners competing for the judges’ scores, they will also be battling to win votes from the arena audiences, who can text vote via their mobile phones and ultimately have the power to decide who wins the coveted Glitterball Trophy at the end of each show. ALEXMusical CORINA Chairs Exhibition Lifestyle, quirky lighting, furniture design and art is the focus of Alex Corina’s exhibition in Lark Lane Artworks this month. The work appeals to folks who want something really different, a piece that both raises an eye brow and can be a talking point.

This exhibition is a change for Alex as he has drifted into art meets quirky furniture design, meets quirky lighting. The exhibition has been a great talking point and sometimes controversial – with musicians occasionally taking exception to the ‘crushed brass section’.

The exhibition includes Recycled/Upcycled/ Downcycled Saxophones, Trombones, Euphoniums, French Horns to create luminous wall pieces. There is also a deconstructed and reconstructed furniture with violins creating a ‘3 legged quartet,’ a ‘Duet’ and Musical Chairs. There is a set of four violin wall pieces too, all influenced by Vivaldi’s four seasons played by Kennedy (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter,) music which Alex Corina constantly goes back to.

Recycling is a recurrent theme. It derives from reclaiming and upcycling furniture/materials that in the past has included drinks cans, old galvanised dustbins, scrap metal, tables, chairs and salvaging musical instruments from school music services.

18

This exhibition is a must see for, not only for lovers of contemporary art, but for musicians and collectors of pieces that evoke a reaction.

Yoga Curious

Yoga, yoga everywhere. There is a barely an independent coffee shop in Liverpool where someone isn’t talking about what type of yoga they are trying next, from Hot yoga, Hatha yoga, Vinyasa yoga to Bikram, Ashtanga, Kundalini to Yin Yoga – so for those of us who are new to this movement it’s enough to send us yonkas! Oh and do you need to wear sandals with a home knitted cardigan and be a vegan? After doing a little research on this ever-growing popular pastime in Liverpool, I found out that the term “yoga” means to yoke, to join, or to unify, as in creating a union between body and mind. And it is for everyone, all ages and abilities. There is even yoga for pregnant women and babies too. You don’t have to be already fit and you don’t have to do the lotus position on the first week! Also, you don’t have to be put off if you try a class and you don’t enjoy it, there are so many different types of yoga that you are bound to find one or two styles that you like. It is a common misconception that yoga is simply stretching and that flexibility is a requirement, which is not true. If you can breathe you can do yoga. As for it being for everyone and not just trendy vegans that is true too, as long as you have some comfy clothes that you can wear - then you’re in. As for the benefits, this is where it really started to get interesting, and probably why so many people in Liverpool are taking part. Health-wise there doesn’t seem to be an area of the body that it doesn’t benefit, it even makes you sleep better and it meant to aid depression. Yoga can help you lose weight. Add to that better muscle strength and tone, better posture, better bone health and prevents bone and cartilage break down. Footballers do it and dancers do it to prolong durability and improve recovery time too. The only question left is which of the fabulous places in Liverpool should I sign up? LiverpooL pound Liverpool Local Pound, a New Way to Pay in Liverpool. The quality of independent shops, fashion and eateries have not only set Liverpool apart from other big cities in the UK over the past 10 years, but it has also brought a huge robustness to the local economy. The latest “local” incarnation is the “Liverpool Pound”, which may, if it works help strengthen the local independence of our city even further. Brixton and Camden already have this scheme in place, and so far, it has worked very well. Now Liverpool is testing the water and adopting a digital local currency of its own. The way this works is that Liverpool Local Pound (LLP) will help consumers pay digitally for goods at local merchants and recirculate money back into Liverpool’s businesses to revitalize and maintain a more sustainable local economy.

Colu is the blockchain-powered start up behind the launch of the LLP, designed to create more robust local economies. They make it easy for local consumers and merchants to pay and accept app-based payments or transfer funds via a mobile device. The company’s mission is to change the way people use and interact with money in a digital world, and in doing so also help bring local communities closer together. It’s success all depends on trust, not only from the companies that sign up for this scheme but for the consumer too. If it is a success it may well add to the many ways that Liverpool’s local economy is the envy of the rest of the country. This plan might just be a master stroke, only time will tell.

GLOBAL SCOUSE DAY 2017 Get your grans Scouse recipe and your big pan at the ready for the 5th annual Global Scouse Day, February 28th. Venues and restaurants across not only Liverpool, but the whole of the UK, are being urged to take part in the fifth annual Global Scouse Day this month, in celebration of Liverpool’s delicious world famous dish, and Liverpool culture. Last year restaurants as far away as New York, Washington and San Diego in the US, plus lots of UK and of course Liverpool restaurants got involved. GSD founder Laura Worthington said: “Global Scouse Day gets bigger and better every year, with over 150 restaurants signing up to put Scouse on their menus in 2016. We’re very proud of how the city and beyond have got behind the event and made it what it is, and we’re excited to see who embraces the spirit of the day this year.” In 2016, some of the Liverpool city region’s most influential organisations put Scouse on their menu, and 2017 will see involvement from Virgin Trains, Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, Liverpool Airport, Barclays and a number

DARREN VISION CheCk up from the neCk up! You know the conversation, some individuals discuss glass half empty, glass half full. Or the other conversation, every cloud has a silver lining or every silver lining is attached to a cloud. People describe people as Positive or Negative. Increasingly, I’m aware that there are 2 sides to every story and for all the positives there can be a flip side of negative and vice versa. What I now focus more on is, “Intelligent Thinking.” What will serve me best? There are certain people, we all know them, when they walk into a room, the room lights up. You also know the people that walk into a room and a dark cloud of limitations come with them. I do know you get more of what you look for and more of what you expect. You know the people that believe they have nothing but bad luck, you also know the people who believe we make our own luck. You know the people that tell you all the good reasons that something CAN’T be done, you know the people that are always busy making things happen. You know people who feel better about themselves by putting everyone else down and you know the people that make themselves feel better by building everyone else up. Looking at the downside to something doesn’t always mean you’re being negative, it can mean you’re being realistic or cautionary. Looking at something with optimism isn’t delusion, it really could turn out well. Neither are right or wrong if they serve you well

34

and allow you to take ACTION in accordance with your perceived outcome. Without action, positive or negative will make little difference which is why being, Intelligent about your thinking will challenge you to take action. We all know these people and we all have choices. When you meet these people, you choose who you want to spend your time with and be around. I believe that if you choose the uplifting, inspirational forward thinking, solution overcoming people that help and support people to spend time around, then that can only help you become more positive and be Intelligent in your thinking. I believe birds of a feather flock together and you attract likeminded people. So, let me ask you the question again; attitudes are continuous, is yours worth catching? To find out more and discuss strategies you may want to develop in these areas, @dasaladarren or email: darren@dasala.co.uk

AMERICA VS ENGLAND::

Round 3: The wedding dRaMa

I hear complaints constantly (myself included) about dating, and in my own words, dating after 30 often feels like scraping the bottom of the dating barrel, but the worst two culprits seem to be England and America; so who wins, if there are indeed any winners in the dating war?

When two of my closest London friends got married, the only label to give this day (other than beautiful) was carnage! The reception consisted of tequila, a mother of the bridal party passing in the fields and a bridesmaid who shall remain nameless (OK, it was me) being carried out at 10pm after allegedly feeding the teenagers enough alcohol to make them all sick. And for the finale, the bride herself last seen having red wine poured down her throat (and her white dress) by the mother of the bride covered in mud. How very English… such fun!

The War of Love

Round 1: The FiRsT online daTe After taking Jojo to her favourite bar to complain about £7 cocktail prices and 2-4-1 pizza, Mr. Odd fired off his interrogation questions whilst simultaneously planning their future. Jojo pulled the classic family emergency exit, but he tried to insist on reading the message, before allowing her to leave after she agreed to give him a (fake) number only to return home to an email full of insults and demanding his money back. Yikes! After months of falling head-over-heels, American Jonas paid for the love of his life’s flight to finally meet his model girlfriend (also 21 yrs.) As he excitedly waited in arrivals with flowers and almost ready to propose, an unattractive and overweight 55-year-old woman tried to run into his arms. Jonas was devastated, and did a runner while she collected her baggage. She continues to stalk him, even sending lawyer letters claiming he was the father of her 1-year old child, forcing him to relocate. America 1 - England 0 Round 2: The pRoposal In our very own Liverpool, Anthony proposed to Alison through the closed bathroom door whilst on the toilet. Alison had been telling car insurance would be so much cheaper if they just got married ‘’book the registry office then’ he said… Meanwhile in L.A., Chris organised a car to collect his girlfriend for a surprise theatre visit, which was actually a unique production of their own love story. For the final act, Chris got on stage to get down on one knee, as friends and family cheered from their hiding places amongst the crowd.

36 America 0 – England 1

In Chicago, wedding planner Sandra describes her horror as during the groom’s speech, he toasted a number of the most prolific dead gang numbers ever seen on the FBI most wanted files whilst pouring shots on the floor to honour them. Shortly after, alll 3 bridesmaids’ acid began kicking in, and they tried to eat out of the caterer’s bin before all streaking naked through the reception and jumping into the pool with the wedding cake. America 1 - England 0 America wins (as always…), but are there really any winners here? I do. However, slightly wish I had been at the Chicago wedding… besT giFT ideas FoR; The Commitment-Phobe; edible panties that look like a diaper because you’re just sh..! Unity theatre goes oUt oF sPaCe in 2017! Unity Theatre’s reputation for sparking debate and challenging the norm is high on the agenda of their new season – OUT OF SPACE where Unity will present exciting new theatre performances in places where it has never gone before! Right now Unity Theatre is undergoing its #BuildUnityBetter capital redevelopment programme, after the exchange of contracts between Unity chiefs and contractors Vivark marked the first step in a £845,000 transformation of the theatre and former synagogue, designed by Liverpool architects K2, slated for completion in April 2017. The handover coincides with the announcement of significant funding news for Unity Theatre, as a further £60,000 in contributions towards the #BuildUnityBetter project have now been confirmed. Funders PH Holt Foundation and Garfield Western Foundation have committed £10,000 and £50,000 respectively to the major capital development work, with social enterprise First Ark Group also adding to the project funding. The funding follows an initial £435,000 investment from Arts Council England, £120,000 from Liverpool City Council, £30,000 from the Granada Foundation and £2000 from the Ravensdale Foundation as well as over £20,000 in individual donations from Unity Theatre supporters. Funding-raising is ongoing will around £50,000 still to raise. To donate to the #BuildUnityBetter project please go to www.unitytheatreliverpool.co.uk/ donate In the meantime the Out of Space season will draw on Unity Theatre’s aims to collaborate and encourage new and burgeoning talent, engage families and

38

individuals from economically disadvantaged areas, tackle current issues and say the important things that would otherwise go unsaid. Highlights include Narvik (27 Feb – 3 Mar), a show that cements Unity’s relationship with Bluecoat. Written by Lizzie Nunnery, this critically acclaimed show crosses generations and cultures in a powerful story of love and war. CATHY (11 Feb) by Cardboard Citizens, which will take place in Liverpool Cathedral’s Lady Chapel, has been programmed in response to the current homelessness crisis in Liverpool. The show aims to raise awareness and encourage audience members to make a donation to this cause instead of buying a ticket. Actor and Unity Theatre Patron, David Morrissey said: “Cardboard Citizens do fantastic work for excluded people, and have done for the past 25 years. I’m really pleased that Unity Theatre are able to bring the astounding show CATHY to Liverpool, which has suffered a rise in homeless people over the last few years.

TINE N E L A V Y K N U F MY By: Martin Quirk ‘If music be the food of love ..’ as The Bard suggested, then you would expect there to be a much bigger fuss made about who was number one on St Valentine’s Day rather than at Christmas. Record labels would definitely structure their marketing budgets differently and Bradley Walsh’s face wouldn’t be staring back at you from the shelves of every charity shop in the UK in about six months’ time. We all have our favourite love songs and I thought that I’d share a few of mine with you. Frank Sinatra ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ - Many people, understandably, prefer Tony Bennett’s stunning rendition of this heart-felt love letter of tender appreciation from a man to the woman that he loves. I love it too but Frank’s versions, while perhaps less intimate, is more uplifting. Barry White – ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love’ - The iconic baritone declaration that ‘too much of anything is not good for you, baby’ is one of the greatest intros in all of Disco. The soaring strings of the Love Unlimited Orchestra, a gentle but killer groove and mister

Barry White; The Force is always strong with this one. Sister Sledge - ‘Thinking Of You’ – As if having the greatest bassline in the entire history of recorded sound wasn’t enough, this song is so good that Paul Weller covered it and he didn’t do a bad job. Van Morrison – ‘Crazy Love’ – Any of Sir George Ivan Morrison’s legion of adoring fans would probably go for ‘Have I Told You Lately’ or ‘Sweet Thing’ or any of his other great love songs but one thing is certain; none of them would pick ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ … ever, no sir, which is exactly what yer man Van should have said when Buckingham Palace called. The Elgins - ‘Heaven Must Have Sent You’ – This slightly lesser known Motown classic is as great as any other track that you care to mention on the iconic label. If lead singer, Saundra Edwards, had been as photogenic as Diana Ross then you wouldn’t have to Google her and she would be a household name too.

Following the debut Glasgow, Manchester and London dates in September 2016, Peter Hook & The Light will perform Joy Division and New Order’s legendary Factory Records compilation albums ‘Substance’ live with dates across England and Wales, including a show at O2 Academy Liverpool on Friday 3rd March. These debut performances saw fans old and new revel in hearing these seminal records live, and the Manchester Evening News awarded the show at O2 Apollo Manchester five stars. Peter Hook & The Light have toured Joy Division and New Order’s albums extensively since debuting ‘Unknown Pleasures’ back in 2010 with dates all across the world. Released in August 1987, New Order’s ‘Substance’ became the bestselling New Order album ever upon its release; the double LP going on to sell 2 million copies in America alone. Widely considered New Order’s strongest album, “their most popular, well known, highly rated and arguably the most influential” (Sputnik Music), Factory Records’ 200th release featured the bands seminal 12” mixes of their singles as well as versions of “Confusion” and “Temptation” re-recorded for the LP. Running from ‘Ceremony’ in 1981 up to ‘True Faith’ in 1987 (again recorded especially for the album), the set takes in the high points of New Order’s catalogue, including “Temptation”, “Thieves Like Us”, “The Perfect Kiss” and “Bizarre Love Triangle”. Released the following year in July 1988, Joy Division’s ‘Substance’ features all the singles which did not appear on the albums such as “Transmission”, “Komakino”, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and “Atmosphere”, as well as their B-sides, tracks from their EP “An Ideal For Living” and the Factory Records sampler. Factory Records’ 250th release, it begins with “Warsaw” and takes in the development of the band through “Digital” and “Dead Souls” to the band’s final tracks. Foy Vance arts club liverpool

Monday 15th May £15 adv + booking fees

Following his November / December UK tour, with every single show a sell-out, Foy Vance has announced further dates for May and brings The Wild Swan World Tour to Arts Club on Monday 15th. The critically acclaimed singer songwriter hails from Bangor, Northern Ireland, but his musical history is deeply rooted in the Southern US, as he travelled through America for much of his youth before eventually settling in Northern Ireland. His latest single “Noam Chomsky Is A Soft Revolution”, is a fired-up rock’n’blues celebration of musical, philosophical, literary and polemical insurrectionists and the follow-up to his BBC Radio 2 Playlisted singles “Coco” and “Upbeat Feelgood”. All three singles are taken from Vance’s acclaimed new album ‘The Wild Swan’, out now on Ed Sheeran’s label Gingerbread Man Records, which was nominated for the Northern Ireland Music Prize 2016. This is the second time Vance has been nominated and he previously won with his last album ‘Joy Of Nothing’ in 2013.

Friday 17th February – liverpool guild of students –29.50 adv + booking Fees Pop trio Busted are coming to Liverpool as part of a UK headline tour following the release of their eagerly anticipated third album ‘Night Driver’ and first single in over a decade, the disco-tinged, ‘On What You’re On’. Though stylistically unrecognisable and far darker around the edges, ‘Night Driver’ is still the vivid hook riot you would expect from Busted, as vivacious in their early thirties as they were in their teens, and the band are itching to present it to the world.

Foy Vance also supported Elton John – the Executive Producer of ‘The Wild Swan’ - on his ‘Wild Crazy Tour’ throughout the UK and Ireland last year. Tickets on sale now from artsclubliverpool.com

“The last thing we wanted to do was try to recreate what we used to have,” says James. “It belongs to that time. All real artists evolve, all real artists try things, it’s unnatural not to.” Now, with a decade of experiences and newly discovered influences behind them, the two-time BRIT Award winning trio reunited in the studio almost by accident and discovered they each had a fresh perspective both personally and musically. “As soon as we started making music it became very apparent that we all wanted to make exactly the same thing,” Matt says. “That’s what made it so easy. Once James got on the Juno-60 we were like, ‘this is the sound of our record, this is exactly the kind of record I wanna make’.” James, Matt and Charlie first broke onto the music scene in 2002 with their tongue-in-cheek ode to Matt’s school teacher Miss MacKenzie, ‘What I Go To School For.’ Within just two years the three-piece had become the biggest band in the country, with four number one singles, two triple platinum albums, a total of five million records sold, and over 750,000 ticket sales including and a record-breaking run of thirteen Wembley Arena shows. Busted play with support from Natives on Friday 17th February at Liverpool Guild Of Students and tickets are available from ticketweb.co.uk
