With
To be honest I had written something else this month, however with the attack on the Florida Pulse Gay Club in Orlando a few weeks ago, I had to change my prose. I simply couldn’t go without showing my support the best way I can, through words, for the LGBT community. No, I am not personally part of the community, but I am an ally. I am an ally because it doesn’t matter who you fall in love with, it doesn’t matter who you kiss at the end of the night, as long as it’s between two consenting adults, who cares? I am also driven to dedicate this letter in support of the LGBT community because I am in shock. In shock because it’s 2016, America is the leader of the free world and yet this insane crime, this hail of bullets, was aimed at a community who should already have had complete acceptance long ago in society. My little family and I are going to Pride this year, it’s not my first time at a Pride festival and it won’t be my last. However, this year it feels more important than ever to show my support. In the past I supported and celebrated Pride because I was thankful as a society how far we had come, this year although my support will be the same, it will be to show solidarity, to show that I am an ally of the LGBT community and that I stand with them. I could tell you that I have friends that are gay, but it wouldn’t matter if I didn’t. I am an ally of society, of freedom of living and the freedom to fall in love with whomever we chose, without fear, shame or doubt. I am taking my children with me to Pride because it matters. Because I want them to grow up believing and celebrating society as a whole, I want them to see, appreciate, accept and support everybody no matter who they are.

Jennifer, you first wrote Ab Fab back in the early 1990s but they’re very resilient characters. In your industry, you must meet them all time? All the time! They’re still going on. I keep thinking, ‘Surely there’s other ways of doing PR,’ but it’s still the same. Honestly, it’s quite extraordinary. The other day I got a really unusual massive invitation to some party and I thought, ‘I thought those days were gone.’ I thought everything was done by the Internet now. But still this ridiculous thing came, like a Rubik’s cube, an invite to some fashion show, and you just go, ‘I can’t believe it’s still happening.’ I suppose as long as there’s products, there’s going to be PR. Would you go on a night out with Edina and Patsy? Jennifer: I think they’d be horrible. They’re so into each other, in a way, and into their own little world. I don’t know how much actual fun they’d be. I’d be them going out for a night – that would be much more fun. To be Edina and Patsy going out for a night would just be fantastic. Joanna: Oh I would steer so clear of them! (laughs). But, I think at the very beginning it would be quite a buzz. Ab Fab been shown in 36 countries and It was a huge hit in France too. Why has it been such an international success? Joanna: Isn’t that extraordinary? Sometimes I used to wonder about how they did the subtitles, and how they would translate what we were doing. Sometimes they’ve tried to dub us, which doesn’t really work, because you’ve got to hear the way we are speaking, but people get the humour, because a lot of it is visual comedy. It’s funny but you can see what’s funny about it. It’s a very visual show and it’s very beautiful to look at. Harry [Banks, production designer] again has done the most extraordinary job. He transforms places. The house that we used for Edina’s place, when we went there, the floor was black and there was nothing in it. It was like a big empty, rather grand, marble-clad barn. So it was ‘how will this look like Edina’s kitchen?’ Then Harry gets to work and he makes the floor white, he brings the stuff in, he has the flower arrangements, which is where Eddy’s money goes – flower arrangements that would bankrupt Moyses Stevens, but she’d have them because she wanted them. She wanted a swimming pool the size of that so she dug into the neighbour’s house next door. This is funny, all this cartoon stuff. Joanna: Do you still love playing Patsy? Oh, I love it. I adore her, because she is so unlike me but I know her. She’s the sort of polar opposite of me, which makes me really happy to own her, because I’m not her but she is mine, if you know what I mean. Sometimes things come along, maybe you’re directed to do something, 12
and you go, ‘I don’t think she’d do that,’ because you know how that person is. All actors take care of their characters, w h e t h e r they’re good or bad, or it’s a small part, or anything, you guard your character because you’re the spokesman for your character, and so you want to keep that absolutely true and right.

EvErything you nEEd to know about thE all nEw livErpool pridE FEstival 2016 Liverpool Pride Festival 2016 offers a week-long starting thEME oF livErpool iCons programme ChosEn For this yEars FrEE on Saturday 23rd July. EvEnt The festival culminates with a two-day event the following weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 30 and 31 July), which takes place in the St George’s Cultural Quarter, featuring the well-established Liverpool Pride March on the Saturday. Where is it? This year, Liverpool Pride will take a more prominent and visual position in the city, taking over St George’s Cultural Quarter, including St George’s Hall, The Plateau, William Brown Street and St John’s Gardens. The whole area will be transformed into a colourful festival site bursting with activities over the two days. What’s happening? There will be live music and entertainment, food and drink zones, community and education zones, a market place and family activities and speakers. Liverpool Pride will remain a family friendly event with all ages encouraged to attend. The Sunday will take a more laid-back approach in St John’s Gardens and a programme of Fringe events are being programmed on the lead up to the main Pride weekend. The increasingly popular and poignant Liverpool Pride March remains a major part of the activity. The March on Saturday 30th July, will begin and end at the festival site of St George’s Hall, it will make its way through the streets of the city centre in celebratory style and return to officially 20
launch the opening day. Organisers are encouraging as many groups, organisations and individuals to participate as possible. The March will also feature guest speakers representing the LGBT communities. What’s new for 2016? This year the event is being described as an all new Liverpool Pride and will be free to enter. As well as taking up a new position in the St George’s Cultural Quarter, Pride has introduced a new theme for 2016 – Liverpool icons – from the city’s iconic buildings and people to our favourite dish - Scouse! Organisers are aiming for Liverpool to become the most visibly LGBT friendly city in the UK through a major new campaign. Come Out Of The Shadows will encourage organisations and public buildings to light up their venues with the famous Pride rainbow colours during this year’s event. They have also invited the city’s retail and commercial sectors to Dress With Pride and allow their employees to swap their usual uniforms and work attire to don colourful and creative costumes throughout the week of the Festival. A major photography exhibition has been commissioned through funding received from the Arts Council of England. LOOK - Liverpool International Photography Festival and Liverpool Pride are calling out to members of the LGBT communities to send in photographs in support of this year’s Liverpool Pride’s festival theme Liverpool Icons. A public exhibition will be shown on Thomas Steers Way, in Liverpool ONE, from 23rd July to 14th August. Also new for 2016 is Liverpool Pride’s family day We Are Family taking place on 31st July which will feature site animation, an alternative fashion show, music and dance workshops, and children’s fairground rides, as well as Sing With Pride, a brand new choir project. How it came about? The festival coincides with the anniversary of murdered gay teenager Michael Causer, who tragically lost his life on 2 August 2008. The Liverpool Pride festival was specifically created in his memory as a way to celebrate his life and to empower the LGBT communities. The first Liverpool Pride festival 2010 attracted over 20,000 people, which almost quadrupled to 75,000 in 2013. As well as being lots of fun, the festival aims to make a stand against Homophobia and Trans*phobia. Follow Pride on Facebook.com/LiverpoolPride and Twitter @LiverpoolPride

BRAZILICA FESTIVAL REVEALS ITS PROGRAMME OF FILMS FOR 2016
There’s some ‘reel’ good news for film buffs as Brazilica organisers Liverpool Carnival Company are delighted to announce the return of its popular Film Festival for 2016. Nine films celebrating Brazilian life and culture will be screened at various venues across the city between Saturday, 9th July – Thursday, 4th August, with the majority of films FREE to attend. The whole film spectrum will be covered with everything from comedy, musicals and drama features as well as some of the very best Brazilian documentaries and biographies. There will be a variety of films for all the family to enjoy. Discover how Rio’s famous carnival was created in 82 Minutos at The Old Library on Lodge Lane on Saturday, 9th July. This fascinating documentary takes a look at this cultural phenomenon that attracts the eyes of the whole world every year and shows behind the scenes footage from samba school Portela. To put the documentary in context, it will be screened in Brazilica’s headquarters or barracão, while the festival preparations are taking place. It is the new 4D screening experience, with live action in the background! Samba & Jazz – Rio de Janeiro to New Orleans explores the synergy and parallels between these two cities and its rhythms and cultures in a musical documentary being shown at the Capstone Theatre at Liverpool Hope University Campus on Monday, 18th July at 7pm. The film portrays, the authentic artistic expression of these people who, although separated by 22
Monthly
geographic boundaries, share a common feeling: a passion for music. Marvel at the remarkable career of Brazilian singer Tim Maia in a biopic about his life on Tuesday, 19th July at FACT. Follow the father of Brazilian soul music, from his childhood in the Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro until his death in 1998 at age 55. The film includes his passage to the US, where he explores a new style of music and lifestyle prior to being deported to Brazil. After ‘Paris, Je T’aime’ and ‘New York, I Love You’, the ‘Cities of Love’ cinema franchise is back with a celebration of love for the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, known for its sensually cinematic sights and sounds. You’re bound to fall in love with the city youself after watching Rio, Eu Te Amo (Rio I Love You) on Tuesday, 21st July at The Old Library, Lodge Lane at 7.30pm. This collaborative film brings seven international and four local A-list directors, including award-winning international directors, Paolo Sorrentino, John Turturro and Fernando Meirelles to the city. Also guaranteed to pull on the heart strings, Tudo Que Aprendemos Juntos (The Violin Teacher) will be shown at The Lantern Theatre on Tuesday, 26th July at 7.30pm. The movie tells the story of Laerte, a talented violinist who, after failing to be admitted into the OSESP Orchestra, is forced to give music classes to teenagers in a public school at Heliopolis. His path is full of difficulties, but the transforming power of music and the friendship arising between the teacher and the students open the door into a new world. In the mood for a dance off? Then don’t miss A Batalho Do Passinho at Kazimier Garden on Tuesday, 28th July at 8.30pm. A form of favela funk dance, the Passinho exploded into Rio de Janeiro in 2008 and has become one of the most important cultural manifestations in the last 10 years. The documentary “Passinho Dance Off – The Movie”, directed by Emílio Domingos, closely follows the phenomenon and shows the evolution of this dance culture.
The story of Joaosinho Trinta will be told in a biography/drama at The Old Library, Lodge Lane on Thursday, 4th August at 7.30pm. When Fernando Pamplona is suddenly dismissed from the samba school ‘Salgueiro’ in 1974, his assistant Joaosinho Trinta accepts the challenge of preparing the school for the carnival in record time, having lost the support of the person who had been his boss, his greatest mentor and friend. So grab your popcorn, take your seat and enjoy a Brazil-iant evening at the movies with these fantastic additions to this year’s jam-packed programme of events. LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL 2016 – 9th JuLy – 16th OctOBER The Liverpool Biennial is the largest contemporary art festival in the UK. 42 artists have been invited to create new work for locations across the city. Artists from Australia, Belgium, China, France, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Russia and Taiwan, as well as the UK and including Merseyside-born Mark Leckey, will participate. The Liverpool Biennial exhibition has been conceived as a series of episodes, drawing inspiration from Liverpool’s past, present and future. The episodes are: Children’s Episode, the Biennial’s first comprehensive commissioning programme for artists to work collaboratively with children; Ancient Greece, the inspiration behind many of Liverpool’s grandest buildings; Chinatown, acknowledging Liverpool’s heritage as Europe’s oldest Chinese community in Europe; Flashback, artists’ new interpretation of history; in Software, Biennial artists will open up new perspectives and interactions with technology; and Monuments From the Future, where artists have been invited to imagine what Liverpool might look like in the future. The Children’s Episode will include a commission by British artist, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, who will create a film, Dogsy Ma Bone, entirely cast, produced
24
and directed with young people from Liverpool. Liverpool’s fleet of Arriva buses will include three double-deckers transformed by artists, of which one will be designed by schoolchildren. Reflecting on Liverpool’s radical political history, Japanese artist Koki Tanaka revisits the scene of a huge protest in Liverpool in 1985. It involved around 10,000 children, demonstrating against the Conservative government’s Youth Training Scheme. Tanaka will bring together original participants and their children for a walk through the city, from St George’s Hall to the Pier Head, retracing the original route. Children will lead the interviews for the artist’s film of the project, which will be shown at Open Eye Gallery throughout the Biennial. In Flashback, Merseyside-born artist Mark Leckey will present Dream English Kid, a film inspired by events in his life from the 1970s to 1990s. The film will be screened alongside new sculptural works in the Saw Mill, the former entrance to the legendary Liverpool club night Cream. A floor of Tate Liverpool will be transformed into Ancient Greece. Drawing on National Museums Liverpool’s significant collection of classical Greek sculptures, originally amassed by Lancastrian antiquitarian patron, Henry Blundell in the early 1800s, Tate Liverpool will show these
sculptures alongside new commissions by international artists including Andreas Angelidakis, Koenraad Dedobbeleer and Jumana Manna. Outside the Mersey Tunnel George’s Dock Ventilation Tower, the celebrated American artist Betty Woodman will create a large-scale bronze fountain made from Woodman’s characteristic vessels and fresco-like sculptural works. Throughout the Biennial, echoes of China and Liverpool’s ever present Chinatown will resound in spaces across the city, to be encountered in everyday settings such as the supermarket, and in large spaces such as Cains Brewery. Work by 15 artists from all parts of the world will be featured. Among these is a work by Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian, exiled in Dubai, who are sending a shipping container by sea full of works from their art collection and artefacts from their home, to be reassembled in Liverpool. Among the locations for Liverpool Biennial 2016 will be the historic Cains Brewery building on Stanhope Street; the art deco ‘palace’, the former ABC Cinema; Clarence Dock in North Liverpool; the Oratory; streets, pubs, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and all the key visual art venues in the city including Tate Liverpool, FACT, Open Eye Gallery and Bluecoat.

Mattel Play liverPool
Liverpool is fantastic for adults, but for small children it has been lacking somewhat. Other than the Liverpool museum – which is our other go to place to take the twins, there isn’t anywhere else in the town centre to amuse to small boys.
with everything a child will expect from that particular programme. From train rooms with ringing phone to mini supermarket and protective hats. Every room is different so there is plenty to do, explore and find in each. Children love getting stuck in, which is exactly what is offered, from foam bricks to build a wall, to a large ball pool complete with mini helicopter and slide. There is even a little train and track that individual children can be pushed around. And in the Fireman Sam room there was a fire engine to climb in with buttons to press, and even a fireman’s poll to slide down.
My twins have not long turned 4, and I think Mattel Play is designed to appeal directly to them, there were other ages on the day, some younger and some a little older, but in my opinion 4 & 5 year olds will get the most out of this adventure.
We spent 1 ½ hours in there, which gave the boys plenty of time to try every activity. They loved it, and we will certainly be going again soon. The cost is £11 per child and £4 per accompanying adult with offers outside peak times.
Mattel Play is split into 3 rooms, Thomas the Tank Engine, Fireman Sam and Bob the Builder. Every room is like stepping into large TV set, complete

Rachael Kearney, partner of late Evertonian David Thomas, and Stuart Wall, David’s former business partner, visited 41 Goodison Road to unveil a plaque dedicating the building to David and presented EitC’s Disability Manager Steve Johnson with a cheque totalling £400,000 to further develop the charity’s disabled provision. Since David’s sad passing in 2013, the Thomas family have been staunch supporters of Everton in the Community and have previously funded two minibuses which provide a life-changing service for the disabled children and adults in Merseyside and allows them to access a range of activities through the charity’s specialist provision. The recent contribution will allow Everton in the Community’s disability programme to develop and expand its current offering in 28
both day centres, after school clubs and specialist adult fitness sessions as well as supporting, and growing, the charity’s 11 disability teams which are available to those with any disability. The generosity of David Thomas’ family will enable the programme to continue providing football and physical opportunities for thousands of disabled children and adults for many years to come. Steve Johnson, EitC Disability Manager, said: “This is an amazing donation that we have received from Rachael in memory of David and it will make such a huge difference to the lives of so many across our community. The money will allow us to further expand our disabled provision across Merseyside and help us to develop the programmes we currently deliver in school and at after school clubs as well as the sporting and job opportunities we offer.” In recognition of the Thomas’ family contribution to Everton in the Community, the charity’s property at 41 Goodison Road has been dedicated to David’s memory with a plaque hanging above the door recognising that the Evertonian ‘never forgot his roots’. 41 Goodison Road is used by the charity’s Youth Engagement team and provides that vital ‘front door’ for young people in crisis to knock at and will provide them with the
opportunity to develop key domestic skills and a nurturing environment to coach a young person back into their community. Speaking after the unveiling of the plaque, Rachael said: “David was a lifelong Everton fan and the charity does so much for people across Liverpool and this dedication reflects his legacy really well. I’m delighted to see David’s name above the door, it means so much to me.” The disability programme delivered by the Club’s official charity is one of the largest and most respected in the world and provides football and physical activity opportunities for thousands of disabled children and adults each year. The programme is all inclusive and there are teams available to those with any disability whether that be learning, physical, reduced stature, autism, cerebral palsy, deaf or partially sighted.

JESS GLYNNE If you are a festIval reveler you wIll be pleased to hear that Jess Glynne has set herself up for a very busy summer of non-stop festIvals, up and down the country.
From V festival to Haydock Park and everywhere in between, the open sky over the next few months are going to be treated to the amazing voice of Jess Glynne. Jess first came into the public consciousness as the vocalist on Clean Bandit’s Grammy Award winning and #1 hit ‘Rather Be’; pop sensation Jess Glynne has since become one of the biggest UK breakthrough acts of recent years. Her number-one charting debut album, ‘I Cry When I Laugh‘, has now turned double platinum in the UK, making it the highest selling debut album of the past year. She also became the second British female solo artist after Cheryl to have five number-one singles in the UK. You are donating a percentage of your fee to charity ‘ Retraining of Racehorses (RoR)’, which is being matched by the Jockey Club Live. Why did you pick this charity in particular? Firstly I love horses and have loved riding from a young age. When I was first approached about playing these dates at racecourses it made me think about what happens to the horses that get injured or just too old to race anymore so I did some research and found out about the charity and the work it does. So when I agreed to the dates I said I’d do them if I could donate some of my fee to the charity. The Jockey Club kindly agreed to match my donation too, which is great. Are you looking forward to shows at the racecoursesI imagine the set up is a little bit different from your normal shows, as you’ll have horse racing essentially being your support act? Yes, never had horses as an opening act before. Looking forward to it. 36
37
Will you be placing a bet? I’ll have a look at the runners and riders and see if any names pop out. You’ve had 5 No.1 singles and your debut album also headed straight in to the number 1 spot. For a debut artist, you’ve had an amazing couple of years; did you think it would happen this quickly, and this big for you? No it’s all been a bit of a whirlwind and I didn’t expect any of it, I just hoped and prayed for people to enjoy the music I was making. Being able to take my music around the world, through Europe, down to Australia and across to America has been insane and a real a dream come true. Speaking of which, you’ve sold out Haydock Park Racecourse with thousands of people snapping up your tickets in a few short weeks and other courses are following suit. Are you surprised with the reaction you have been getting, as we can’t imagine you get to visit this part of the North West often?
Having family in Manchester, I am always surprised and overwhelmed when I hear things like that. It’s never a normal feeling. They are not regular stops on tour but I’m looking forward to all of them. Have you ever visited racecourses before or followed any races growing up? Any experience of horses? I loved horse riding when I was growing up and used to go all the time. I have been to Ascot a couple of times, w h i c h was a laugh with my friends but race wise that’s about it for me. Your performance at the Brits was spectacular, did this give us an insight into what we expect from a large outdoor summer Jess Glynne show? Do you have anything special planned for these dates? Yes, the Brits was fun. I’m just finishing rehearsals now for all the summer shows coming up and I’m super excited! We’ve made some changes to the show and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we have planned. Can you give us an idea of your set list - have you noticed any songs fans react particularly well to? You’re going to have to wait and see. I’m sure there will be a fair few songs in there that you will know. Are you working on album no.2 yet? Anything you can tell us, who you are writing or working with? I’m always writing - I keep all these ideas on my phone-and I’ve started writing a bit but it’s early days yet. When I’m not touring this summer and afterwards I will be back in the studio. C is the new e! Femine Fitness is replacing the busty babe! Manchester, LiverpooL & London
are the Most popuLar cities for boob jobs in the uK, and the trend is going sMaLL. Ladies these days are opting for the athLetic ‘gyM bod’ LooK oversuper-sized breasts, according to new data.
In just ten years the average breast size achieved through surgery has plunged from an F a to a more modest C. The data also revealed Northern women opted for bigger breast ops than their southern cou terparts, aiming for an average one-cup size bigger. The biggest boob jobs on averagehave been carried out in Hull in the North and Southampton in the South, according to the latest figures from BAAPS in 2015. But women in Edinburgh opted for the smallest size – an average size C- just like their counterparts in Newquay, Cornwall. At Liverpool STHETIX Clinic a similar trend to Edinburgh has been noted, with women, requesting smaller size range of implants. The numbers also revealed a dramatic change in the role models women choose when aiming for the perfect breasts. It’s not a news that in 2006 Pamela Anderson had the boobs most woman wanted to emulate and in 2012 Kim Kardashian topped the list. This year her smaller-chested supermodel sister Kendall Jenner was voted as having the most enviable boobs. Most Surgeons will say for the first 40
time more clients are opting for Taylor Swift’s athletic look, over the ample chests favoured by celebs like Katie Price and Jodie Marsh. Mr Rizwan Alvi, Plastic Surgeon and Clinical Director of STHETIX Cosmetic Clinic in Liverpool said: “In the Northwest , we have seen a definite trend towards women looking to have a smaller, more sleek and natural looking breasts after breast augmentation”. The Healthy and Athletic look is currently favoured over a more sexualised and glamorous look.. “The trend towards a more natural look is fascinating. It is now common to find women asking to for a natural looking end result compared to 10years ago, when large implants with a false look was more commom. The Brazilian trend for “side boob” has arrived in the UK.” “We also see patients returning to have implants changed to smaller size.” “We are now doing a significant number of breast uplift procedures combined with augmentation. This combination has been a good option for women looking for fuller breast while retaining or restoring a youthful natural result, while avoiding unnatural “Big Implants”.” As well as size, the shape of the
augmentations has transformed, with focus on the cleavage giving ground to the importance of the side boob, the experts said. Now more than a quarter of women have ops to improve the side profile of their curves, thanks to minimalist modern clothes. Over the past ten years Manchester and Liverpool has had the equivalent of 15,837 pints of silicone inserted into their breasts, and London 10,559 pints, making Manchester and Liverpool the overall ‘breast’ capitals of the UK.

AK Aesthetics on Rodney stReet Review by AmAndA moss
Six pregnancies, (one lasting 41 weeks) have stretched my stomach beyond recognition. Okay, that and my love of food. So when I was invited to try this new treatment I leapt at the opportunity. It’s a non-evasive alternative to liposuction. Using cooling technology the treatment can permanently destroy 20-40% of localised fat cells. The technology has been designed and developed by Harvard Medical School and has been clinically proven to be effective. It works by cooling the fat cells to a controlled temperature which they can crystallise. They are then flushed out of the body so it’s essential to drink lots of water. With a whole host of areas to target on my body (love handles, buttocks, bingo wings) I chose the muffin top, as that’s the critical area to target ahead of my summer holiday. 44
The treatment is on offer at the
beautifully decorated AK Aesthetics on Rodney Street which feels more like a country spa than a beauty clinic. I lay on the bed and a cool compress was placed on my lower midriff. After three C-sections it’s pretty numb down there but I did feel a tight pinch as the machine was hooked up to me. It was uncomfortable for around 30 seconds, as if someone was nipping my skin, but after that my body became immune to it. For anyone who has had a baby it was like lying on a bed being hooked up to the machine where they monitor your baby’s heart rate. The treatment was extremely relaxing and I spent the remainder 40 minutes chatting to Christine I hardly expected to walk in a size 14 and walk out a size 8 (I can hope…) but within a few hours of the treatment I lost some of the bloated feeling and my stomach did feel tighter. A circuit training session that evening also helped as they recommend exercise to kick start my lymphatic system into breaking down the fat cells. It’s still early days to see exactly how
effective it is but I can confidently say I feel different, my stomach feels smoother and I don’t dread the bikini as much as I did. Ultimately it’s all about feeling confident and I heartily recommend the Crystalice Lipo at AK Aesthetics. Friendly, non-judgemental and making me feel completely at ease was all part of the exceptional service and Christine did a great job ensuring I left with a bottle of water and a diet sheet with after care instructions. I shall be studying my muffin top more than usual over the coming days and look forward to my new sculpted body. For details email: info@crystalicelip.co.uk or call AK Aesthetics on 07793 294895

H LINES IT W P U IT G LIVIN by Natalie Morris
2016 summer collections are zinging with rule breaking bold stripes of all shapes and sizes. This season’s stripes stormed the runway in a way you have never seen them before; some ran horizontal, others vertical, asymmetric, layered and some were thick lines others were super skinny all in contrasting colours. This season’s stripes went far beyond the classic navy and white pattern we all know, proving that the stripes don’t necessarily have to walk a straight and

Review by AmAndA moss
Service 5/5 Couldn’t fault it. The staff are very helpful and friendly and are knowledgeable about the menu.
The last time I went to La Tasca my waters broke and I thought I was going to give birth in the car park next door. Thankfully this visit wasn’t filled with as much drama.
Atmosphere 3/5 We went mid-week at lunchtime so it was quiet, but it is in the heart of the restaurant village so I except a vibrant atmosphere in the evenings and weekends
Menu choice 5/5 Enough without being confusing, with recommendations of which dishes to choose which I found very helpful
Child friendly 5/5 Definitely a plus and what a menu choice! Freshly fried fish, garlic bread with cheese and skinny fries followed by chocolate brownie and ice-cream all for £5.95.
Taste 4/5 Delicious tapas dishes. We skipped the starters and instead chose Pollo Marbella (chicken and chorizo in a white wine and cream sauce), chargrilled asparagus served with a chunky olive tapenade, the spicy meatballs and triple cooked patatas braves (potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce and roasted garlic mayonnaise and a delicious vegetarian paella dish which comfortably filled us. We finished off with a gorgeous yet light chocolate tart.
Cleanliness 5/5 Spick and span tables and floors and with access to see through to the kitchen as well always fills me with confidence Bonus feature: A lovely and spacious bar area which is perfect for unwinding at after work. up after a swim DON"T GET When people hear Top Don’t forget to reapply after swimming the word S ‘ ummer‘ BAKED THIS or having any contact with water. Even or ‘holiday‘, they though a sun tan lotion may say it’s SUMMER probably think of bikini‘S, ice cold ciderS and Sand in between their toeS. i think of theSe thingS too.
But more often than not, the first thing I think of is Sunburn Back when I was in my early twenties I suffered severe sunburn. So, in honour of Sun Awareness week, and with a little help from the folks over at the British Skin Foundation, I have put together all the tips you need to protect your skin this summer!
Take Shade Breaks
The hottest hours of the day are from 11am to 3pm, so make sure that during these hours you rest in the shade, even if it’s just at short intervals. Cover yourself up
Take into consideration your skin type. If your naturally a very pale person or have sensitive skin, you are going to be much safer starting off with a higher factor. The BSF say we should be buying a lotion with protection SPF too, they recommend SPF 30 or more in order to protect against harmful UVA
According to the British Skin Foundation, we need to be wearing a big hat when we are sat in the sun. A hat will protect the bits we probably forget about, such as our neck, ears, scalp (burnt scalp is the worst) and let’s not forget the face. It’s basically a great excuse to go and treat yourself to an oversized fedora!
Apply it early
Keep hydrated
Choose the right Suntan Lotion
48
Water Resistant, this doesn’t mean that you can swim in and out of the water all day without it having any effect on your lotion application.
Don’t wait until your about to walk out the door before you apply your suntan lotion. BSF advise applying it around 30 minutes before you head out into the sun so that your skin can absorb it properly. By leaving it till your about to be exposed you run the risk of sweating it off straight away and the lotion wont have time to sink into your skin and begin protecting.
It is very important to keep drinking water when you are in the sun. In extreme heat your body sweats out all your water, which not only lowers your SPF protection, but it dehydrates your body which can lead to sunstroke. Always carry a bottle of water with you during the summer season.
Look good, feel great, begin within. Get set for summer with our specially tailored treatments, known to accelerate weight loss and help combat fatigue caused by dieting and exercise. Our range of professionally administered IV booster injections and infusion treatments help to deliver essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients directly to the body, restoring balance and helping you to look and feel your best.

Twin ATlAnTic
and nothing to prove. That’s an exciting creative place to be.”
LiverpooL Arts CLub on the 9th JuLy.
“We could never have made this album before,” adds McNae, “because we hadn’t had all our experiences, we hadn’t made all the right mistakes. We have finally made the album we wanted to make.”
Twin Atlantic’s 4th album GLA has hit the shelves as the band do a mini tour of the UK to promote it and introduce fans to their new material. They arrive at the Arts Club Liverpool 9th July. The songs of GLA – from riff, to lyric, to guitarist Barry McKenna’s searing lead lines – are possessed of powerful complexity and nuance. The perfect polished pop songs have been ditched, replaced by tracks that are just as compelling, but also possessing new depth and sophistication, while never shedding that primal Twin Atlantic kick. And they are personal and from-the-heart in a way the group have never before delivered. ‘Whispers’ – one of a number of songs penned by McNae – is a stark but uplifting muse on loss and grief; “It’s dark, but not gothy,” says McTrusty. “It sounds like pure empathy and release. Glasgow is a city that’s sympathetic to the troubles people have.”
To buy tickets for the Arts Club Liverpool visit www.artsclubliverpool.com
“We were inspired by classic riff-rock, but we want to make our own version of it, and inspire other people,” McTrusty explains, “We’re giving that extra bit of ourselves, and we want to give power back to rock’n’roll, to reveal itself. With ‘GLA’, we have everything to lose,

“The Heat is all genuine passion, brimming with energy, anger and great tunes sandwiched between the guitars” *****UNCUT
Arts CLub LiverpooL MondAy, 11 JuLy 2016
The Heat was Malin’s second album following his breakout 2002 debut The Fine Art Of Self-Destruction, and saw Jesse turning up both the temperature and the volume while retaining the potent rough-edged intimacy of his songs. Enter a more layered approach and LOTS of electric guitar. “The punk rock type of singer-songwriter is still where it’s at for me. People like Strummer and Jones, Kurt Cobain or Paul Westerberg,” said Jesse at the time. “A raw edge with great songs underneath.”
Jesse returns to the UK for more live shows in July with support on all dates from his Velvet Elk label mates Don DiLego and The Touristas + Diane and The Gentle Men. One Little Indian reissues Malin’s second album The Heat as a x2cd and x2 Vinyl repackage on 29th July. He also releases a new single ‘Whitestone City Limits’, taken from his recent ‘Outsiders’ LP the same day. 54
Today Jesse reflects on the record thus: “After my first solo record I wanted to write less about myself and more about others. The record was mostly written on the road: While my friends back home were getting married and having kids I was at the Columbia hotel waiting for the bar to open. Ryan Adams played some the sickest guitar all over the album and came up with the title a month later, lying in a hospital bed with a badly broken arm after falling seven foot off the stage in Liverpool. The cover was shot in the one of the last dirt bag, pay-by-the-hour hotels in Times Square (I wouldn’t sit on the bed, there was bloodstained carpet and a cigarette burned headboard…to keep it real!)

INDEPENDENCE DAY Picking up the story 20 years after the first invasion, the aliens return in ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ for another attempt at wiping out the human race. Since the first war, humanity has used alien technology to strengthen the planet and improve its defences. But it won’t be enough. The aliens have sent an even larger fleet – and the devastation they wreaked in 1996 won’t come close to what they’re capable of now. ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ reunites Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, and welcomes Liam Hemsworth and Maika Monroe into the fold. And you thought the White House being blown up was impressive…
SUICIDE
SQUAD
COMING SOON TO ODEON LIVERPOOL ONE SUICIDE SQUAD To counter threats too dangerous to risk a hero’s life, the US government creates the ‘Suicide Squad’: a black ops team of supervillains whose lives are completely expendable. They’re the worst of the worst: master assassin Deadshot. The Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn. Human crocodile Killer Croc. In exchange for a better prison deal, they’re sent on an insanely risky mission that will probably get them killed. And if there’s collateral damage, it doesn’t matter: they’re bad guys. It’s what they do. You’ve met Batman and Superman, but now it’s time for DC Comics’ villains to steal the spotlight in ‘Suicide Squad’.

BABy , g in h t L A e R e h t Aint’ nothing Like the summer of 1976......... LiverpooL is one of the great musicaL cities of the worLd aLongside the Likes of new orLeans, memphis and nashviLLe. One band in particular, understandably, gets most of the attention, but forty years ago this month four different young lads from Liverpool shot to the top of the charts with an instant classic which has continued to grow in stature and easily withstand the test of time.
‘You To Me Are Everything’ by The Real Thing spent most of July 1976 at No 1 in the UK pop charts and is my very favourite record by any of the great bands to come from my hometown. Now, I love The Beatles and The Bunnymen and The La’s and The Stairs and all the other great bands that you’re supposed to dig if you’re a Liverpool muso, but my heart both melts and soars whenever I hear the distinctive opening chords of this three and a half minutes of soul pop perfection. I couldn’t care less that it’s not ‘cool’, whatever that is, it is surely one of the greatest love songs ever written, and one of the even rarer ones that compels you to dance.
The summer of 1976 was famously one of the hottest on record. Music history tells us that it should be remembered as the time when Punk reached our shores and caused a musical revolution. Except that it didn’t. Punk was, undeniably, a huge kick up the cultural backside, but for me its real musical significance has been grossly exaggerated by a certain type of man of a certain age who has dominated the music media for years, but that’s for a different column. The Real Thing were the sound of the longest, hottest, summer ever that year and the actual record books prove it. It was fantastic to see the original ‘Realies’ do their ‘Thing’ again at the International River Festival concert at the Pier Head back in May and even better knowing that Chris and Eddie Amoo and Dave Smith will be back performing in town again on 12th November at The Philharmonic Hall

DARREN VISION There is no FuTure in The PasT Our bodies don’t live in the past, why do we allow our minds to? Your past is for reference not residence. Having just returned from a fabulous trip to Italy, specifically the Amalfi coast, whilst driving down the spectacular coastline in our car it dawned on me that I have 2 pieces of glass ahead of me. The first is a huge windscreen that frames the view ahead, the place I am heading to, the future. The second is a small piece of glass, the rear view mirror, this shows me where I have been, what’s behind me, the past. Wouldn’t it be true that if I spent too much time looking at the small piece of glass, the past, that it would have some impact on my ability to drive with confidence forward, to the future? One of the real challenges of looking back to often is that we can focus on all the good things that happened or how were when we were younger, fitter, slimmer, more curious and more energized. Whilst looking back in itself isn’t a bad thing, it can be if we don’t believe the future can match up to it and we spend unnecessary amounts of time comparing how we thought we were then, with how we are now it could truly hold us back and effect our confidence. When we look back at old photographs, they don’t show the challenges we were facing, the uncertainty and the insecurities, we only see the smile and the fun. That’s what you may see when looking back on photographs of life now. So why not create some great pictures for you to look back on, great memories? Here’s a thought, at some point in the future you may well be looking back on NOW as the best time of your life as we may have done with our past. Just a thought. So what are you looking forward to, what plans do you have, what goals do you have, where are you spending 62
your time, what hobbies and interests are you currently pursuing? We have all done things with our time that we really love and enjoy and for whatever reason we have become distracted, formed new habits and stopped doing the thing that we really enjoyed. The good news, is you can go back to that thing anytime you chose, dancing, singing, walking and learning new things. Do the things today that you will look back on as great thoughts and memoires. You can create a new history and new future from today. Now is possibly the healthiest you could be, we don’t know what is around the corner. Why not use the energy we have today to do the things we love, things we enjoy? No excuses! AS far as I know this isn’t a rehearsal for next time, this is the main event. Are you living it like the main event, the show piece, the big one? Let’s not wait for things to happen, why not MAKE them happen and MAKE them happen from today.

NOT JUST TRAVEL NORTH WEST
Advertising is everywhere. You can’t get away from it. But to be successful in advertising you have to be memorable. Take McDonalds for example. Love or loathe their restaurants they are the experts in reinventing themselves, redesigning the layout and changing the style often. So it comes as no surprise that Not Just Travel North West is rebranding. Their new stylish logo reflects the fact that their company offer more than holidays (which, may I say, they do exceptionally well) As the name says on the website, it’s Not Just Travel, they reach out
to the entire lifestyle industry. Branding is way more than a logo. It’s your message to your customers, your social media followers, and your entire reputation is involved in defining your brand. Branding promotes recognition which in turn puts people at ease. It’s like wearing your favourite jumper over and over again. Your brand sets you apart from your competition, you need to stand out from the crowd, you need to be unique, you need to be in vogue and you need to grab people’s attention. When a company spends time building a brand it encourages motivation amongst staff. Teams like to know their management

CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY
Hello Lifestyle Readers, I hosted the Dreamcar Event at the Croft Racing Circuit in Darlington last month which featured more than £50m of super and hypercars and gave guests the opportunity to take an exhilarating ride around the track. Also in attendance were Geordie Shore star Vicki Pattison and TV presenter Jason Bradbury, along with stars of the popular TV show Police Interceptors. Rides in the prestigious McLaren P1 GTR were also auctioned throughout the day in aid of NSPCC. It’s been a very car-filled month for me as I was also in attendance at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome for the 10th anniversary of their Supercar Event. As you can see from the picture, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! As well as offering passenger rides in supercars around the famous Top Gear track, there were a host of rides and attractions to keep visitors young and old occupied and all funds raised went to the Children’s Trust which, I’m sure you’ll know, is a very worthy cause.

I also attended an event on behalf of Checkatrade and Suffolk Trading Standards who joined forces to host an Open Day at Ipswich Football Club. Checkatrade founder Kevin Byrne took to the stage to discuss the company’s partnership with the organisation and the founding principles of the company. After the presentations, there was plenty of opportunity for Q&A sessions so attendees could have all their queries answered. As always, I have given you one of my DIY tips for you to try your hand at. If you need any more useful advice, I shot a range of videos on behalf of Silverline Tools which can be found online at www. youtube.com/user/SilverlineTools1.
All the best,

Tiled external steps can sometimes be a trip hazard in wet weather conditions. A great way of making your tiled steps a lot safer in bad weather is to fit an aluminium non slip tread to the edge of them. These can be purchased from most DIY shops at various lengths and grades. Using your tape measure, measure your step transfer to your aluminium angled trim and cut to size. There are two ways of cutting these - one is by using an electric chop-saw (always use safety specs or goggles) with a metal cutting blade or by using a hand-held hacksaw. I would recommend using a chop-saw if you are doing a number of steps. If it is only one step level I would use a hacksaw. Hold the trim over the edge of the step using your pencil; mark the step through all the pre-drilled holes on the trim itself. Remove the trim, and then using your hammer action, drill with your 6mm masonry drill bit, drill into your pencil marks . Apply the 6mm plugs, place the trim back into position using 8mm screws and your drill driver, and screw the trim down so it is nice and firm. Repeat this to all screw holes. Once you are happy with the one trim that is in place, repeat this process on as many steps as you have.

Moving on up – Andrew’s is now the largest independent estate agent in Wirral Following their acquisition of Cathy Behan Estate Agents in Bebington, Andrew’s Estates can now confidently call itself the largest independent agency in Wirral, superseding Clive Watkins, which was recently bought by national property chain Countrywide. The new branch brings their total to 6, as Bebington joins Neston, Prenton, Little Sutton, Wallasey and Moreton as the latest location in the group’s coverage of the peninsular. Since the first branch opened in Neston six years ago, Andrew’s Estates has rapidly risen from new kid on the block to becoming a force to be reckoned with in the sales and letting world. They have scooped a number of awards, including Gold at the Times and Sunday Times Best Small Northern Lettings Agency of the Year 2015 .
Secret shoppers have given a big thumbs up to Liverpool’s shops, hotels and eateries, in a record breaking survey. A record total of 200 city centre businesses – from independent cafes, restaurants and hotels to national retail chains – were assessed this spring for their customer service and collectively scored a 84% approval rating. Of those secretly shopped for the 7th annual survey, commissioned by Liverpool BID Company, 17 businesses scored a perfect 100% – with five repeating the top score from the previous year. Nova 48 came out as one of the winners.

the Last worD Doing what is right for you It'’s a fact of life that you can’t please everyone. No matter what you do someone will be less than happy.
Take the weather for example. During our short heat wave there were people moaning about it being too hot and they can’t sleep/eat/work. Then we’ve had torrential rain and people have criticised the lack of summer and they can’t dry their washing/walk the dogs or whatever. It’s an emotional trap when you start worrying about what other people think. We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t even like - all because we think we must be liked by everyone in order to be happy. You go for the job you’ve always wanted and people will tell you not to bother or you won’t be happy; you get a new partner and people will tell you they’re not right for you; you want to go on holiday and someone will tell you why do you want to bother going to that particular destination, why do you keep going back to the same place, why do you want to try somewhere new when you enjoy going to a particular resort. When you want a baby you’re too young, too old, too fat, too thin; when you have one child you’re asked when are you having another because need to have another because that child will be lonely, then you have 2 and then 3 even and then it’s too much. (I could write a book about the amount of opinions I have been on the end of with regards to my 6 children); you’re draining the NHS, everyone’s paying for your free childcare places. From simple choices as to what to eat to lifestyle choices as to what house to rent in what area, to business decisions that shape a company -SHUT UP. Everyone will always have an opinion and they aren’t afraid to voice it (check the irony there). So who cares what people think? You’ll never please everyone no matter how hard you try and if you listen to everyone’s advice you’ll never be happy. How many people truly have your best interests at 66
heart? Can you really trust your best friend to tell you that new hair colour really suits you when you tell her you want to go red/pink/purple/white? Ultimately the day you stop worrying about everyone’s opinion is the day you start living your life for yourself. It’s not being selfish, it’s called living your life. So make it a happy one.
