Entrepreneur Pamela Sandison talks abut her meteoric rise to success with her salon chain Glamorous Beauty Spa and Glamorous Tanning.
In an interview with Amanda Moss
P
am Sandison is a mighty girl. The glamorous single mum from Liverpool has built up her beauty empire from scratch through sheer determination and hard work. Finding inspiration from both her ex partner's mother and her auntie who were both career women, Pam, 31, always wanted to work. She went into the beauty industry at 18 years old were she trained in all aspects of the beauty field. She describes herself as an old school beautician specialising in acrylic nails and non surgical facials. Nine years ago she launched a tanning salon offering all aspects of beauty treatments and tanning. Seeing her business soar she opened Glamorous Beauty Spa a few doors down from the tanning shop three years ago years ago. The salon specialises in all aspects of beauty inc semi lashes, nails, tan, facials etc. The tanning salon has since been rebranded to Glamorous Tanning this year and undergone major refurbishment offering safer tubing to the public for a safer tanning experience .
Lifestyle INSPIRATION Pam won the Best Beauty Salon at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards earlier this year which was voted for by the public and since then her business has steadily increased in popularity. She said, "I am overwhelmed by the support I have from my clients. They are so close to me. It is nice to finally be recognised in the beauty industry for the hard work that I have put in over the years." She added, "Since doing my school work experience at Andrew Collinge, I've always known I wanted my own business and had to work hard to achieve this as I was never the type of person to accept any handouts with money or any help. I had to sacrifice things in life as my career had to come first. Unfortunately this was the cause of a break up with my daughters dad who I remain on good terms with. I have a lot of respect for my friends and close family who have stood by me and encouraged me to follow my dreams , always praising me as a career women and mother. It is very rewarding to be in a position to be independent to not rely on anyone and to be a role model for my daughter. She sees that it's not been an easy ride but we love our lives and appreciate every day even though its very nerve wracking owning a business. Sometimes I forget they are mine as I work there full time and have the best staff and clients that a any business could need !!" Glamorous Beauty Spa is the associate sponsor of the UK Fashion & Beauty Awards in July at the Crowne Plaza and Pam is looking forward to presenting an award on the night "Well I am a bit nervous but it's nice to have the opportunity to get my name out there and let everyone know what my salon is about."

Lifestyle EDITOR'S LETTER
A note from our editor...
Hello lovely Lifestyle readers!
W
hat a fantastic month June is going to be for Liverpool. We have the International Business Fair starting, with 1.7bn potential business up for grabs, the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament at Hope University and The Open Golf Championship being held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course. Because of these events, we will have visitors from the four corners of the globe descend upon us over the next few months. I can’t wait, because I know Liverpool will make these events a huge success, and show whole world what we already know – how impressive our city truly is. I am very excited about this great issue, we have a huge section dedicated to everything you need to know about the Men’s, Women’s and Junior Golf. Plus competitions to win tickets to see both the Men’s and the Women’s golf in June. We have interviews with the effortlessly cool Chrissie Hynde, Charley Hull – the teenage golfing genius, the ever popular Ken Hom and the delectable extremely talented actor Alexander Devirent. Plus our usual pages on shopping, food, going out, and travel. Our “We Love” page this month is dedicated to present ideas for Father’s Day, which this year is Sunday 15th June. I have already spied a few things from this page that I will 4
be treating my husband to, as presents from our twin boys, as he in my opinion is quite possibly the best dad in the world. May I also express a warm welcome to our new music columnist Martin Quirk, who will be keeping us abreast of all the latest happenings in clubland. I hope you all have a great month, I’ll leave it there, other than to say COME ON ENGLAND!

The event brought to Liverpool a feast of classical music performed by the Around Panufnik project. The Around Panufnik project was born out of the idea to celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of the most prominent Polish composers of the 20th century – Sir Andrzej Panufnik. Three outstanding young musicians from Poland – Anna Maria Staśkiewicz (violin), Bartosz Koziak (cello) and Jakub Tchorzewski (piano) prepared a special programme comprising of Sir Panufnik's pieces and the music of his fellow-composers, Witold Lutosławski and Karol Szymanowski included. 8

return of a sunday market? S
ince the very sad loss of the Heritage Market in 2011 there has been no city centre based Sunday markets available to the public. Liverpool property firm Nextdom has unveiled plans to change that. The plans have been submitted to Liverpool City Council this month for the facility, which will offer space for more than 270 stalls. The whole site, which is bordered by Pall Mall and Merseyrail’s Northern Line, is currently used as a 603-space car park by city centre office workers on weekdays. Nextdom intend on (if planning is approved) setting up a brand new market full of fresh, local produce and the most amazing street foods, local businesses and the best Liverpool has to offer. Sundays will certainly be the highlight of the week.

international mersey river festival 13th - 15th June
T
he International Mersey River Festival is a celebration of all things maritime. In my opinion there is no better city in which to hold such a visually spectacular festival, than one of the most famous and historically important ports in the world, Liverpool.
12
From Friday 13th to Sunday 15th June there will be a three day celebration of all things maritime and music. The River Mersey will come alive with vessels of all shapes and sizes including tall ships, traditional and modern boats. And for the first time activities will take place across a larger part of the waterfront – stretching from the area outside the Liverpool Echo Arena right up to the end of Princes Parade.
In a coup for the city, Liverpool will play host to the popular Dutch Barge Rally which will see around 12 to 15 barges in convoy on the Leeds Liverpool canal – the largest number of these vessels to be in procession on that stretch of water for decades.
The event will see a number of Tall Ships sail into the city, including Stavros Niarchos, Prolific, Mercedes and Golden Vanity. They will be joined by a brand new Royal Navy Ship – Type 45 Destroyer, Merchant Navy Ship Galatea, narrow boats and nobby boats (an inshore sailing vessel such as a Morecambe Bay prawners), many of which will be open to the public across the weekend.
Music on the Waterfront returns with a bang on Friday night (13th June) with a very special free concert which will launch the weekend’s activities.
This year also marks the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines, so there will be a series of Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Sea Cadet displays during Saturday and Sunday.

LAST MINUTE
revision tips...
by Joy Lewis
Last Minute Revision Tips:
The sun may be out and the music festival season just around the corner, but to the thousands of teenagers revising for GCSEs, AS and A-levels, the next few weeks are dedicated to hard cramming. As an exam veteran myself I feel their pain. I spent endless nights with my head in a text book desperately trying to memorise names, dates and quotes till the wee small hours of the morning, only to get up early and start the process again. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, in just a few more weeks the stress will be over and the summer party can really begin. To help take some of the strain off your revision why don’t you try some of these last minute revision tips we have put together. Try applying the following 10 revision guidelines and we’re sure you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your understanding of subjects during these key revision periods. Stay Organised To maximise productivity during each revision session, you want to be performing like a well-oiled machine. You want to spend a little time doing what we call ‘idle revision’. Avoid time-wasting activities like clearing your desk, gathering books, checking Facebook and Twitter or organising your pencil case. Instead, make sure you sort all of those things before you sit down to revise, work out a plan and stick to it. Keep it somewhat flexible so that it’s realistic, otherwise you’ll spend a lot of time readjusting your schedule! 16
Let Others Know You’re Revising
There’s nothing worse than phone calls or knocks on your door when you’re trying to revise. It can seriously hamper your efforts; your concentration is constantly being broken by distractions.
Take Regular Breaks
It may seem counter-intuitive, but taking breaks will actually help you in your revision efforts. Even the brain needs a breather every once in a while and by taking 5 minutes out after each 30-minute revision session, you’ll avoid suffering from serious overload.
Don’t Panic!
The worst thing you can do is pile on extra stress. It’s good to have a small amount of nerves to push you to be at your best, but if you let it go overboard you may find yourself freezing up during exams.
Mock Examinations
Studying and working with past exam papers enables students to have a better understanding of what they’re likely to face in the exam room, and how they’re going to be marked at the end of it. And most importantly questions from past papers get regurgitated every year.
Revise Creatively
An effective revision session should involve more than just sitting in front of books for hours on end with little to no engagement. Our minds learn in different ways, so try fitting in audio and video into your revision sessions, or even discuss what you’ve learnt with a parent or friend. Try recording yourself going over your notes or try teaching someone else what you know. Teaching someone is a great way to reaffirm what you already know, and will subsequently boost your confidence and knowledge in the subject.

Nick Bassi... Founder and CEO of Childsplay Clothing chats to Amanda Moss Tell us a little about Childsplay Clothing and how it came about. Next year will actually be our 25th year in the shop. Childsplay opened its doors in 1990 and then a few years later we opened Ice Teen, the teenage shop over the road. In 2009 we launched the Childsplay website as the e-commerce side of the retail industry is a huge part that is ever-changing.
Style and fashion play a big part in your life. What influenced you to get into the industry? My brother Jesse and I were born into the industry – our mother and father worked in the fashion business so we were always around clothes growing up. The difference being is that when we were younger we were always around adult fashion so when we entered the business we noticed a niche in the market for luxury childrenswear for which Jesse, our team and I have a great passion.
One of my biggest pet hates is children dressing older than their years! Do you have any advice for parents to help their kids remain kids for as long as possible? We have so many parents tell us the same thing. Our best advice to these parents is to involve the children at an early age, don’t make them feel that you are telling the kids what to wear, ask the kids what they would 18
Lifestyle FASHION like. Make it a fun and enjoyable experience, not a chore. Of course it is fun to sometimes follow trends; a lot of our collections are mini versions of the mainline adult collections but with a kid’s twist. We would never stock something we deemed as inappropriate or unsuitable for children.
What childrenswear trends can we expect to see for AW14? You can expect to see lots of colour in Moncler - coats with fur and bold prints. A lot of fun, bright floral prints as well as gold, yellow and electric blue from Versace. Over the past few seasons we have seen ‘street wear’ becoming a more popular look in childrenswear too. The Maleficent range by Stella McCartney is something we also see being very popular for AW14.
Who are your favourite childrenswear designers- whether established or new to the fashion scene? There are so many to choose from. You can’t go wrong with your high end luxury labels such as Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli and Burberry, but at the same time we are always on the lookout for new upcoming brands. This season we started to stock No Added Sugar and Pale Cloud which are proving quite popular. It is important to support and provide a platform for new designers to showcase their collection and designs at an early stage in their career.

the ultimate pretender “I suppose if I’m still swaering in interviews then I can’t have mellowed too much”.
Chrissie Hynde has been a Pretender for over 35 years, selling 25 million records and scoring eight top 10 hits, including two number ones. So why now, over 40 years since she moved to London from Ohio in a bid to follow her artistic dreams, has one of the most iconic female rock stars decided to release an album, entitled Stockholm, under her own name? 20
Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
E
very time I put a Pretenders album out people say ‘it’s just you, isn’t it? But no, it’s not, it’s always been a band. And the irony is this has been more of a collaboration than any Pretenders album ever was, because I co-wrote all the songs. Normally with The Pretenders I write the songs and take them to the band. And this was a collaboration. But none of the guys I was working with in Sweden were prepared to leave Stockholm and the projects they were working on to come to London. So I was stuck with just me.” The “guys in Sweden” include Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John (famous for their omnipresent Young Folks single), who began working with Hynde after a chance meeting in Cleveland, Ohio. Hynde’s publishers by that point had already played her some of Yttling’s music and put him forward as a potential collaborator, something she says “happens all the time these days, as it used to do it many years ago – there is lots of cowriting.” Working in Stockholm did not just influence the album title, but the sound, which Hynde described as a cross between Abba and John Lennon. “Obviously, it has got a very Swedish feel, it was made with all Swedish guys so it has that flavour. It is a fertile place as far as music making goes.” But Yttling is not the most famous name on Stockholm: legendary songwriter Neil Young appears on one track. Hynde, 62, described it excitedly as the highlight of her career. Is that really how she feels? “There is no question about it. If you play guitar, then you adore him. I only got him to play because I wanted to impress Bjorn. That’s the only way I got the guts to ask him in the first place. I knew him a bit, but not to the extent where I could ring him up and
ask him to play on my record. But the song already sounded like him, so it was perfect. And it impressed Bjorn.” Perhaps even more unlikely, the album also features some guitar work from Hynde’s longtime friend John McEnroe, who swapped the tennis court for the recording studio. “Whenever I am in New York I will drag him up onstage and he is one of these guys that just loves rock music. And Bjorn is a tennis fan, and when I realised that I thought ‘okay, okay, let’s get John in the studio.’ Bjorn was thrilled to meet him, because people love John. Of all the famous people I have met, he is one of the most beloved. He’s a real man of the people. He’s the bad boy, and people relate to that.” Does she think she has mellowed over the years? “I don’t know. I suppose if I’m still swearing in interviews then I can’t have mellowed too much”. That much is evident: for Hynde, the music is paramount and everything else comes secondary – just the way it has always done. “I’m not too bothered about whether a record does well or not because I’ve never really cared that much. I’m not supposed to say that, because I’m supposed to be more ambitious. But really? I don’t care too much.”

Alison Peake, Hospital Director at Spire Liverpool Hospital said: "Heritage wise the building is important so we are going to make sure we are careful in our conversion and sympathetic to its surroundings. "It is in a Conservation Village area so it is important to comply with their conditions while making sure it serves its purpose as a medical facility. For us at Spire Liverpool Hospital this is a very exciting time as this is our second satellite clinic, our first being in Formby."

More than 200,000 golf fans are expected to descend on Hoylake, to witness golf’s finest players including Tiger Woods, Rory Mcllroy and Phil Mickelson battle it out for the championship cup. For one week each year, the pursuit of the famous Claret Jug trophy is the focus of the sporting world, followed globally by millions of fans. Organised by The R&A, The Open delivers an annual economic benefit to its host region, while the Championship’s commercial success supports the development of the game, worldwide.

Lifestyle SPORT Interview with Charely Hull by Joy Lewis
Charley Hull first picked up a golf club at the age of two, and since then all she’s wanted to do is play the game she loves. Now a flourishing teenager, Charley is currently living out her dream of playing professional golf.
How do you feel about playing at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport? Royal Birkdale is one the best courses in the UK so I am really excited to play it in championship conditions later this year. I played the course a couple of times as an amateur so I am looking forward to see whether it has changed and I am excited for the challenge. You have achieved so much success for one so young and early in your career, do you have to pinch yourself sometimes? I have had some great experiences and love what I do but I don’t really think about what I have achieved. I just like to concentrate on my golf. When did you start golfing, and what got you into the sport? Dad introduced me to golf when I was two years old and he first took me to my local golf club in Kettering to play when I was four. Ever since then I have been hooked on the sport, I just love to compete. What will winning the Ricoh Women's British Open feel like? Winning a Major Championship is a dream, but winning a major at home in the UK would be even better. At this moment in time though, I am just trying to concentrate on playing my own game and staying focused on putting in a good performance at Birkdale. If I am up there on the back-nine on Sunday challenging for the title though, I will be doing all that I can to bring the trophy home. 26

Lifestyle INTERVIEW interview with...
ALEXANDER DEVRIENT
Sherlock Holmes Alexander Devrient to makes a big entrance in Emmerdale You may not know the name Alexander Devrient, but you will certainly recognise his face. He has been in more Hollywood blockbusters than there is room to mention, as well as being an accomplished theatre actor and sports journalist. This year he has decided to give the small screen ago by appearing in Emmerdale. He literally crashes onto the screen as a visiting French cyclist by the name of Laurent and causes all kinds of chaos.
What made you decide to try for a part on Emmerdale? I have been thinking about doing some TV work for a while now. This was one of my goals for this year. Emmerdale is such a huge show and I love it, so I was more than pleased when the role came up. I play a pro cyclist who is training for the Tour De France on the Yorkshire Dales, I don’t speak any English and I will be causing quite a stir.
What was it like joining the cast? It was great. They are like a big tight knit family, but I was made very welcome by everybody and I very much enjoyed my time on the set. I was thrown in at the deepend a bit with such big open for my character – the first time I appear on screen is by having a huge crash on my cycle – but I enjoyed the role. Will you be returning to Emmerdale in the future? My character has a short role for this particular story – but who knows. I really like
Emmerdale and my character wasn’t written out so yes I would consider a return in the future perhaps. You have had played so many different types of characters, is this a conscious effort to avoid being type cast? Yes, but I am very lucky to have versatile looks, which enables me to play lots of different interesting characters. I also like to be very busy, I am soon to be starting another role – completely different again, this time in a French romantic comedy for the theatre. And in a few weeks I will be leaving for Brazil and the World Cup to do some journalist work covering some of the games! 33

EofE Whilst impressing audiences up and down the country on the McBusted arena tour recently, EofE have released their debut single ‘Lust’.
E
ach night on tour the band have been closing their powerful set with the anthemic rock pop track, which has instantly become a crowd favourite. ‘Lust’ is their debut single released at the end of last month and was recorded over a few months at Magic Garden Studio, Wolverhampton, and produced by Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Twang, Paolo Nutini, Robert Plant). “It’s kind of an antidote to love songs” lead singer Tom Harris, 17, explains “a couple of songs we have written discuss love and failed attempts at love – ‘Kiss Me Like You Mean It’ and ‘Piece of You’ - so we thought, you know what, lets just make it about Lust!” The video’s scene is set at a haunted underground bunker in their native Black Country. Guitarist Dan Bremner, 19, continued;
44
“We wanted to make a humourous video about being lustful! We thought what better way than us being Vampires, but then our Director turned it around so that we were the hunted. The video itself was filmed in an underground bunker, beneath Kinver in the West Midlands. No Phone signal, very little light, cold, damp and eerie. It has actually been used as a WW2 factory, nuclear bunker and for NATO tests. Whilst filming we did hear REALLY strange noises - it was great, but there was a lot of nervous laughter! Its not all acting you see in the video.” The single is to be released amidst the end of the
McBusted tour, which sees the band play to over 380,000 fans across 32 UK dates. Having only formed last year, EofE, completed by bassist Luke Bradley (18) and drummer Nicky Waters (25), couldn’t believe their luck after being picked for the run of dates. Nicky concluded, “We feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to support them. Their show is phenomenal and they’re really lovely lads. The first couple of nights were a bit scary as these are by far the biggest shows we’ve ever played, but their fans are incredible and have been giving us a really warm welcome each night.
OUR EDITOR SAYS... E & E bounced on stage with joyful enthusiasm and really worked the crowd. They seemed very much at ease with the audience and played confidently with catchy tunes. Their instrumentals were fantastic and it won’t be long before they are as big as the band they are supporting. They are definitely one to watch!
Lifestyle ALBUM REVIEW Album: Stockholm Chrissie Hynde, best known for her work fronting the Pretenders, has released her first solo first solo album, entitled Stockholm. by Joy Lewis my verdict......
3/5
R
ecorded at Ingrid Studios in Stockholm with co-writer, guitarist and producer Bjorn Yttling (Peter, Bjorn and John), the album features cameos from Neil Young and tennis legend John McEnroe. The album, 11 tracks in total includes the first single ‘Dark Sunglasses’, which was be released in April. Summing up her aims with the album, Chrissie said; “I wanted to make a power pop album you could dance to – Abba meets John Lennon”.
Having listened to the whole album a few times now, I would describe it as a slow burner, with a sound of gentle rock – which is classic Hynde’s style. The lyrics are beautifully composed – which makes a refreshing change to the often mundane, hollow and meaningless prose we are forced to give an audience to these days. The first three tracks; You Or No One, Dark Sunglasses – released in April and Like In The Movies, are the best of the whole album – and instantly likeable. The rest of the album – like I said is a slow burner, and it needs a few listens. But then after a while I had the eureka moment, all of a sudden I found myself singing (out of tune) into my wooden spoon instead of stirring the pan of scouse I was destroying. So yes I quite like this album. I can’t help but realize that the veteran music talents of Hynde have come to the fore once again, and a brilliantly produced and composed album is the end product. Ex Corrie actress Debra Stephenson and Steven Pinder come together at Liverpool's Gusto in the Albert dock to promote their appearance in Last of the Red Hot Lovers.
By Amanda Moss
T
he raunchy play by Neil Simon has been a hilarious Broadway smash hit and comes to life under the direction of Sylvie Gatrill and Regal Entertainments. Sylvie is a long term collaborator with Regal Entertainments, having directed many of their seasonal comedies including last year’s Bouncers: The Remix, The Ciggie Run, The Salon and the record-breaking classic Rita, Sue and Bob too. Outside of the Theatre Royal, Sylvie is an acclaimed actress herself having starred in Bread, Brookside and Emmerdale. I couldn't believe Debra and Steven hadn't met before as I interviewed, their conversation naturally bounced off each other and they were very at ease with each other. Debra, who plays 3 roles in the play, said, "For me this is a first for me as this is what I trained in and I am so looking forward to getting on the stage. Of course it will be challenging and intense but it's also going to be a lot of fun."
46
She added, "This is perfect for me as it is a short run and I don't like to leave my family (in Dorset) for too long."
With just 10 days rehearsal time both actors are keen to throw themselves into the roles. Stephen who plays a man having a mid life crisis says, "I love working ion Merseyside. It is lovely what is going on here, it is so vibrant but this play isn't specific to the area, it's really special for locals to enjoy. It's great to work in television but the theatre has been around a lot longer, for thousands of years. It is a tried and tested formula which everyone should experience and it is lovely to engage with your audience. Sylvie Gatrill said: “This play is just just so funny! I’ve worked with Steven before on Brookside and can honestly say he is an amazingly talented actor and I can’t wait to work with Debra – she is perfect for the job! I’ve not been this excited in a long time!”.

Lifestyle CULTURE
As the American-Chinese chef, author, TV presenter and humanitarian that has been the face of Asian cuisine for over 30 years, Ken Hom knows what it is like to be healthy, wealthy and successful. But he also knows what it is like to be poverty-stricken and struggling to find enough money to put food on the table, which is why he is fronting a campaign for Laila rice, which aims to give away one million servings of rice to the hungry via UK foodbanks and NGOs in India and Africa.
B
orn in Tucson, Arizona to Taishanese parents, Ken Hom was raised by his mother who would “earn not much more than $75 a month, if that”. It meant food had to go far, and as such the celebrity chef has first-hand experience of the pain that a lack of sustenance can cause.

“I am an ambassador for Action against Hunger - not just an ambassador for it but I give a substantial amount of money and gifts and contribution to the legacy of hunger. It fits right into what I do. And of course, rice is an important part of my life. I love basmati rice and the fact that it can feed so many people. In today’s world it is scandalous that we even have hunger. We waste so much food - over 40%. That’s ridiculous, don’t you think?”
mismanagement on the government side as well as the social side. We live in world where people are worried about buying their next iPhone. So if this campaign can bring to attention that over one million people in the UK have been to the food bank in the last 12 months, it will be a very good thing.”
Another reason Hom is lending his support to the campaign is his disbelief at the current increase in use of food banks in the UK.
“As it was my childhood cuisine, it definitely has to be Chinese food because I grew up eating it. But, I do like fish and chips!”
“The fact there is hunger in the UK is shocking. It has come to this for a lot of

On the road to Rio By Joy Lewis
I
t’s finally here, the arduous four year wait is over, the endemic fever that is the World Cup is about to hit sports fans from every corner of the globe. At last I can dare to dream once again. While we certainly don't have the best squad on paper going into the tournament, especially when compared to the likes of Spain, Germany. And not surprisingly Brazil are the favourites to take the tournament. However unlike league competitions, tournaments are won and lost in the moment, with form, injuries and self-confidence having a huge influence. If England can use in form players and get some harmony among the squad who knows how far they could get. But ya know, I think it’s time for an upset. Remember when Greece won the Euro’s in 2004? Maybe this year it’s our turn again? Maybe it’s time to bring football home to its birthplace. And that belief I will be fervently sticking too - at least until the inevitable penalty shoot out…….. The great thing about this year’s World Cup? Well the games are mostly in the evening, the earliest being 5pm BST – so you won’t miss a match while being trapped at work. And as it’s summer there will be lots of opportunities to turn sausages and burgers into charcoal while you are distracted by Steven Gerrard taking a penalty or running around the garden with your shirt over your head shouting ENGEEEERLAAAND! Before I leave you, think on this. In 1966, Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest, Atletico won La Liga and Real Madrid won the Champion’s League. DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers! Summer feels like it’s just around the corner, and after a long, wet winter and spring, it’s not before time! This month has been a good combination of work and rest for me which has been very enjoyable! Workwise, I have been doing plenty of jobs for leading paint equipment supplier Wagner. I have made several appearances on popular shopping channel Ideal World which showcases only the very best products for your home. Wagner aim to make painting as simple as possible and their range is great for everyone from novices to professionals. Wagner offers a complete array of products ranging from single components in the areas of feeding, mixing, controlling and application, right up to products for complex large-scale installations. Their Spraytech equipment guarantees speed and efficiency whilst making sure every coat of paint is evenly applied. You can save at least half the time in comparison to using a brush or roller! The full range can be viewed online at www. wallperfect.co.uk Filming has also begun for the next series of ITV’s ’60 Minute Makeover’ which is always exciting as the pressure is always on to finish each job to a fantastic standard. It’s also a real pleasure to see the surprise on people’s faces after we have finished! This month, I also had the opportunity to get away to sunnier shores of Spain in one of my favourite holiday destinations, Marbella. I’m a regular visitor and it’s always nice to get away from it all for a few days. Well, that’s about it from me this month my friends. I will keep you updated with all my latest news right here. Cut and install skirting boards • • • • • • • •
Tools Chop saw Combi drill /drivers Drill bits Jigsaw Materials Skirting boards Screws and plugs
Skirting boards not only look great but serve a dual purpose they aesthetically finish off the floor and the walls, as well as protecting the lower walls when hoovering and cleaning etc Skirting boards come in lots of shapes and sizes ranging from 4 inches to 9 inches high. Measure and cut the length of the skirting board to size, then when it comes to cutting the corners there are two ways of achieving a perfect corner; one is a 45 degree mitre cut and the other is by having a straight piece of skirt already fixed to one wall, then scribe and cut the adjoining piece to meet the corner. These can both easily be achieved, but you are going to have to use a chop saw to get a perfect 45 degree angle and a jigsaw to cut your scribed corner. To fix your skirting to the wall you want to drill a clearance hole in the skirt, mark the plaster on your walls then drill and plug the holes - so you can firmly screw your skirts to the walling.

EVERTON PARK TRANSFORMATION SET TO MOVE A STEP CLOSER PLANS to transform Everton Park into a major visitor destination have taken a major step forward.
T
he plans to transform Everton Park are nothing but spectacular. They include a stunning Sky Pier visitor centre, gallery event space and café with views across the city and the River Mersey - which it is estimated will attract 150,000 people annually and be worth £3 million to the local economy over a three year period. A series of walks - Five Pathways - will be created focused around the themes of food, art, lookout, activity and history which will host regular events to attract people into the park to build on the work of the Friends of Everton Park. In May, the Cabinet was asked to endorse proposals to hand the park over to the independent land management charity The Land Trust on a long term lease. To manage and maintain the park on a long term basis and bid for external funds to carry out improvements. The council is also being asked to approve the phased development of land around the periphery of the park for housing over the 60
next 10 years, with the receipts ring fenced and used as an endowment to fund future management and maintenance. The plans for the housing will emerge at a later date but they will be eco-friendly homes. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “This is a visionary and exciting scheme which will transform Everton Park into a must visit destination in Liverpool.” Paul Edwards, Chair of the Friends of Everton Park, said: “We’re absolutely delighted as this council report is the green light our community has been waiting for since back in the 1980’s.” “At last our dream of a new green inner-city village in beautiful parkland with amazing views over our city is becoming a reality – and the days of wholesale moving out of families and communities are truly over.” A video in which the Friends of Everton Park talk about their vision for the park can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R hEncQzYIY&feature=player_embedded

Croxteth Farm future secured A DEAL has been agreed which will secure the future of the rare breeds farm at Croxteth Hall and Country Park.
F
ollowing months of detailed negotiations, Mayor Joe Anderson has today reached agreement with Alt Valley Community Trust over a new partnership to take over the farm. It will see the Trust working with Myerscough College and nearby Larkins Farm to give it a viable future with a focus on education, training and agriculture. The farm currently costs ÂŁ200,000 a year to subsidise, and the council has been looking for the past year at how it can secure its future at a time when it has lost 58 percent of its controllable budget due to cuts in Central Government funding.
Leafing through books in the park In a bid to get more people in Liverpool enjoying books, a special reading area, designed for both adults and children has been opened at Croxteth Park. The reading space, which has been created by The City of Readers campaign, is the first of five which it is hoped will be developed in parks across the city, using the natural environment to encourage children and adults to read outdoors. The aim is not only to encourage the love of books but to make Liverpool the foremost reading city in the country. A special reading kit has been devised which will be loaned to schools. It includes lanterns and other props to help bring literature to life, as well as a guide to reading outdoors and a journal to record and celebrate activities. For more information about City of Readers, visit www.cityofreaders.org 61

The Cool Way to enjoy Summertime Driving
L
et’s face it, summertime is drive time. It doesn’t matter if we have a soft top, estate car or saloon, the appeal of sunny skies and an open road is all it takes to get most of us out onto the road. But before hitting the road, it is wise to stop and think for a moment. Extreme heat and long drives can be tough on cars. They are, after all, made up of many mechanical components that can and sometimes do fail. With this in mind, ACDelco has highlighted its TopTips to help keep both you and your car cool in what will hopefully be the long, hot summer months.
Tyres Make sure you check the pressure and tread of your tires regularly. Underinflated, overinflated, worn or misaligned tires can be extremely dangerous, particularly in hot summer weather.
Change Oil and Oil Filter Quite simply, oil is the lifeblood of a car, so neglect it at your peril. It keeps engine parts that operate consistently under stress lubricated, smooth and cool. And whilst it is important to check oil levels throughout the year, it is during heavy driving in the summer when an engine is more likely to overheat.
Keep Charge Of Your Battery The best way to keep your battery running smoothly is to keep it clean. Regularly detach the battery cables and wipe off the terminals. Make sure the battery is strapped down tightly and that all connections are secure. If you suspect that your battery is being overcharged or isn’t holding a charge well, take it to a garage where they can carry out a quick inspection.
Make Air Conditioning Your Number One priority Have you ever suffered from a loss of air conditioning on a boiling hot summer’s day? Well if you have, then you’ll appreciate how uncomfortable and unbearable the cabin temperature can become in such a short period of time. The most common cause of a malfunctioning air conditioning unit is a low level of refrigerant. This could be caused by a leak somewhere in the system, and since modern air-conditioning systems are complicated creatures, it is best to have a professional check out the problem. 64

The LIGHTWEIGHT AUDI E-TRON E-TYPE is Reborn
T
he E- type Jag is quite possibly the most staggeringly sexy car that has ever been made, no car before or since has caused such a stir when it came off the production line. It is little wonder then that is was the immediate must have accessory for the jet set of the 60’s – Princess Grace, Frank Sinatra, George Best, Charlton Heston, Steve McQueen, Britt Ekland they all had one. And of course the coolest of gents, Bond, he first drove the E –type in Casio Royale. So why am I bringing up this timeless beauty now? Jaguar have announced that they are to make six brand new – but utterly – original E-Types. Not just any old E-Type either, but six "Lightweights",
among the most collectable and most valuable of all E-Types. Don’t panic, these are not re-creations or re-inventions. They will be built to exactly the same spec as the other 12 Lightweights built in 1963 to go racing. The six new cars will have the six sequential chassis numbers originally allocated back in 1963 but not used. And the price – it’s one of those times dear where if you have to ask, you simply can’t afford it.
The MINI SUPERLEGGERA
S
peaking of beautiful cars that will turn heads, meet the new MINI SUPERLEGGERA. A fusion of modern Britishness mashed with typical Italian flair. This exclusive interpretation of an open-top twoseater was created by MINI and Touring Superleggera, the tradition-steeped design and coach building house based in Milan. The MINI
Superleggera is on the one hand a classic roadster, a compact and agile two-seater, and on the other hand its electric drivetrain gives the car distinctly modern driving dynamics. Although it’s still a concept car, rumour has it that it will be released late this year or early next year. Can’t wait! 65
Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS
Hello June I
t is a busy time of year for me (Actually when isn’t?) Excitement is mounting for the UK Fashion & Beauty Awards which are taking place next month and plans are underway for Liverpool Fashion Week. To add to my schedule, I am launching Lifestyle in Cyprus just in case anyone thought I had some spare time.
This project came about because I have a home out there and every summer for the last few years I keep mentioning it to the husband that we should print a version out there. So I was online on a Cyprus forum last week and someone posted up requesting any jobs. I replied flippantly that they could come and work for Lifestyle magazine, not really thinking anything more about it. When I returned to my computer a few hours later I had 21 people message me requesting more information. By the end of the night I had a printer quote confirmed, marketing manager and sales team all in place. How had all this happened within the space of a few hours? I feel like fate is playing her hand. My dream is hopefully becoming a reality and when we are out there later in the year it will be my absolute pleasure to distribute copies around the region. Of course I have no idea what will happen, whether this will be a one off summer copy or a long term business. But, at least I am trying and I will be interested to see how the magazine is received overseas. I don’t want to go through life with any regrets, wondering “what if?” My motto is “Take the plunge and come up for air later.” I am always encouraging my children to do 66
whatever they want, to pursue their dreams as well. Nothing is unreachable if you believe in yourself. Stay stylish and sensibly tanned,
Amanda

What we do
Cavitation
Are you disheartened through wasting money on treatments that just don’t work, then look no further and read on…
Cavitation is a natural phenomenon based on low frequency ultrasound. The ultrasound produces a strong wave of pressure to fat cell membranes. A fat cell membrane cannot withstand this pressure and therefore disintegrates into a liquid state. The result is natural, permanent fat loss.
Unlike most fat loss clinics we provide 3 dimensions to your treatment not just one. Through extensive research and spending time nurturing the procedure Sound Physique have become market leaders in the provision of fat loss treatments. We have cracked the code and discovered how to get the best possible results from your treatment in as little time as possible. Using Sound Physique’s own research you will look like a million dollars in no time, no more wasting money on false promises! We provide you with the real results.
Why choose Sound Physique Ultrasound Lipo? • • • • • •
A complete approach to the problem Inch loss Cellulite, skin scars, stretch marks Nutrition program Full, personal support Clinical use only
Stimulation process The stimulation process continues the ultrasound process but works at high frequency as opposed to low.
RF (Vacuum suction) The vacuum suction treatment transfers the liquid fat to the nearest limb and will thus be naturally flushed from the body.
Radio Frequency (Skin Tightening) Radio Frequency utilises three or more pole/ electrodes to deliver the RF energy under the skin. The energy is controlled and limited to the treatment area. Key advantages of this technology are high treatment efficiency, no pain as less energy is required, shorter treatment service and variable depths of penetration.
