New North West Festival, HOPE & GLORY is to donate all the profits from ticket sales of its inaugural year to the victims and their families of the terrorist attack in Manchester earlier this month. The inaugural boutique festival HOPE & GLORY is taking over Liverpool’s city centre, hosting an array of live music and entertainment across the weekend of the 5th and 6th of August with a line-up that includes Manchester headliners James and the 70 piece orchestra Hacienda Classical with fellow Mancunian special guests Shaun Ryder, Bez and Tim Booth. HOPE & GLORY Festival Promoter Lee O’Hanlon said: “I have lost count the number of times I have attended shows at Manchester Arena for professional purposes and personal enjoyment. I attended the vigil the following night in Albert Square and then attended the Simple Minds concert in Manchester that same night. I was moved like I never have been before. The defiance and strength the people of Manchester showed that night and in the days after the attack was the most powerful thing I have ever experienced. The images of children and young parents broke my heart so goodness knows what the families are going through. I can’t begin to imagine. “I just want us to be able to support the friends and families of those injured or who lost their lives as well as the emergency services that supported them, in any way we could. As a North West Festival with two Manchester artists as our headliners, the choice was simple. It’s simply doing what we can, standing with Manchester. These people want to change our way of lives. I grew up on the music of the North West. These people are strong and if we can help them a little then we will.” Lee O’Hanlon’s business partner, Iain Kerr concurred: “Lee suggested that we donate profits from the festival to the cause and I knew in an instant it was the right thing to do.” The festival which boasts a host of artist from across the north and wider UK is set in the heart of Liverpool behind St. George’s Hall, in St John’s Gardens and William Brown Street where 12,500 fans can enjoy the festival while indulging in the stunning Victorian backdrop of the World Museum and City Library. A specially created arena will be home to the festival – all within a few hundred yards walk of the main Lime Street train station.

Marcus Willis, who became the toast of last year's Wimbledon when he earned a Centre Court showdown with Roger Federer, is to appear at this year's Liverpool Hope International Tennis Tournament. Willis captured the hearts of
Merseysiders during his triumphant Wimbledon run when he refused a £15,000 windfall from The Sun newspaper because he is a Liverpool FC fan. Willis was a world number 772 who had earned just £220 in prize money in 2016 when he beat Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis to earn his clash with Federer. "This is my first year competing in Liverpool but after my dream run at Wimbledon last year I believe Liverpool is the perfect place to kick off my 2017 grass court season. "I have heard nothing but great things about the organisation and the way
Anders runs things and I am very excited as a Liverpool fan to make my professional debut in Liverpool in front of world class sporting fans." – MARCUS WILLIS "Marcus is a fantastic person and a great player in particular on grass and we very much look forward to have him in Liverpool. "I am sure we will organise a trip to Anfield for him during his stay in the city." – ANDERS BORG, LIVERPOOL HOPE INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT The Liverpool Hope International tennis Tournament is in its 16th year and has grown into the longest running and largest

AMATEUR GOLFERS TO PLAY ON GOLF’S GREATEST STAGE AT ROYAL BIRKDALE
Golf club members from throughout Great Britain and Ireland will have the opportunity to tee it up at Royal Birkdale shortly before the world’s best golfers compete at The 146th Open in July. A group of 42 men and women will secure their places in the final of the inaugural R&A Nine Hole Championship through a qualifying process organised by the national governing bodies in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The final of the Nine Hole Championship will be held on Saturday, 15 July when qualifiers will play the challenging back nine at the famous Southport links just before official practice begins for the top
players in the game. Defending champion Henrik Stenson,Masters champion Sergio Garcia, the 2014 Champion Golfer of the Year Rory McIlroy and current world number one Dustin Johnson will be among those competing. The Open is being staged at Royal Birkdale for the tenth time and will be played from 16 – 23 July. The nine hole event, which follows a successful pilot last year, is central to The R&A’s efforts to promote this form of golf as an ideal way to play the sport in less time, either recreationally or competitively for handicap purposes. Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development at The R&A said,
“We want to promote nine hole golf as a perfectly valid means of enjoying the game whether socially or competitively and the 2017 event builds on the successful pilot run at Royal Troon last summer. “We know the time 18 holes can take and that this can deter golfers from playing regularly so we continue to encourage clubs to offer nine hole event opportunities. It is important, we believe, to remind golfers that nine hole play is increasing in popularity and therefore being enjoyed by more players.” The qualifying events are open to men, women, boys and girls who are club members with a CONGU handicap.

THE BIG INTERVIEW
TOMMY FLEETWOOD
When Tommy Fleetwood walks out onto the first tee at Royal Birkdale come July 20, his ambitions for The 146th Open will already have been met without even striking a ball. A Southport golfer born and bred, Fleetwood could even choose to walk from his front door should he so wish, right to a course which he has called home almost since childhood. Even now, more than two months before the Championship begins, he can still imagine walking out on to the first fairway at The Open, the feeling and excitement to come is already palpable.
16
Having come so near, yet so far, to being part of the competition the last time The Open was staged at Royal Birkdale in 2008, it’s easy to see why he is keen to make up for lost time. Back then Fleetwood lost in the final of The Amateur Championship, a win which would have taken him to the promised land, though there’s been no such danger this time around with a stunning season so far. Now with the countdown well and truly underway, January’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship winner is already
letting each moment sink in, determined to make the most of what could be a once-in-alifetime opportunity. “Missing out in 2008 was harsh, I wasn’t able to sleep back then knowing it was at Royal Birkdale, so this will be a massive week for the town and for everyone here come July,” he said. “I’m massively excited, it’s such a dream. I’ve got pictures of me there as a little kid with my dad, Pete, just around the fields hitting a ball, so to be here now is probably the ultimate. “To win The Open at Birkdale
“

“
would be the ultimate dream – doing it anywhere is a British olfer’s dream, but to win it five minutes from where you grew up, there would be nothing more special than that. “Royal Birkdale is such a great course and a great venue, the number of golfers who have it in their top courses tells you that, and the town and people around makes it the best week.” Fleetwood was speaking at Royal Birkdale in full view of the famous Claret Jug, helping to promote The 146th Open’s Camping Village and Youth Weekly Tickets. The Open Camping Village will allow fans right into the heart of the action, with a quality range of spacious pre-erected tents ready upon arrival for an experience unlike ever before. Meanwhile, the Youth Weekly Tickets will allow access to eight days at one of the world’s greatest sporting events, as well as free camping for under25s. That left Fleetwood himself jealous at the opportunity fans can enjoy, hoping the local support can spur him on, as well as producing Southport’s latest golfing talent. “The Open Camping Village is one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard – one of those things I wish had been there when I was
coming to watch,” he added. “It’s going to be brilliant, I’d recommend it to anyone because you’re right there, and it’s a great way for people to be involved through the week. “You can wake up for the first tee and go to bed after the 18th, all from being close by, so it is really fantastic. “The Youth Weekly Ticket is another way of making it more appealing, it makes it easier to come and watch and opens it up for people who may never have thought about watching golf before. “Once people see what it’s about that will hopefully inspire people to play it, especially in this town – it’s one of the best for golf, so if that doesn’t inspire anyone then I don’t know what will.” Fleetwood was also joined by Everton legends Leon Osman, Graeme Sharp and Graham Stuart for a round at the famous course, a rare opportunity to strut his stuff alongside his footballing heroes. He continued: “I’m a massive Everton fan so it was a great day and a great experience, I know the guys so it’s a fantastic treat. “There was a bit of pressure, being the professional, and a defeat wouldn’t have started my Open experience off on the right foot!”
Tommy Fleetwood was speaking at Royal Birkdale Golf Club to promote The 146th Open Championship, which takes place between 16-23 July at the Southport links. Tickets are available at TheOpen.com/Tickets

Spectators from across the globe will descend upon the Lancashire coast for one of the most thrilling and dramatic events in the sporting calendar, as the world’s greatest golfers compete for the the iconic Claret Jug. Twenty-five years have passed since an Englishman last won The Open, with three-time Champion Golfer of the Year Nick Faldo’s last win coming at Muirfield in 1992. 18
Few would make a more popular winner of The Open than cult hero Andrew ‘BEEF’ Johnston. His rousing eighthplaced finish, in only his third major, at Royal Troon last year, made him an instant favourite with the galleries and cries of ‘Beeeef’ are sure to be a regular feature at Royal Birkdale. The Open is the one where it all began over 150 years ago: its history and heritage is unparalleled and the Claret Jug is revered by all who covet it. Royal Birkdale provides a tantalising backdrop for The 146th Open and is a short train journey from major hub cities Liverpool and Manchester and easily accessible over the Irish Sea. Whether you’re a golfing fanatic or eager to experience it for the first time, The Open has something for everyone. The village caters for the spectrum of culinary tastes, from traditional fish and chip shops and gourmet burger bars, to wood fired pizzerias and
handmade sausage-roll shops. The Open Arms will also offer refreshment after a day of following your heroes’ fortunes. Cherished memories are made at The Open. Be there and experience Royal Birkdale at its very best. It’s the one they all want to win and the one you just can’t miss.

THE FITTEST CITIES IN THE UK Liverpool named the fittest city in the UK. Manchester and London followed in second and third place. Sheffield named as the least fit. LIVERPOOL has been named the fittest city in the UK following new research into fitness levels across the country. A survey of 2,000 UK adults carried out by training and course provider Beabetteryou.com, found that scousers workout more than those in any other city in the UK with as 71% of locals claiming to exercise at least once per week. Manchester and London followed in second and third place with 66% and 65% of each cities residents hitting the gym at least once a week. Oxford came in fourth place, with 62% of locals exercising at least once per week, while 59% of those in Leeds do the same, completing the top five. The research found that Sheffield was the least active city in the UK, with just 19% of residents sporting their trainers and exercising at least once per week. Plymouth and Birmingham followed closely behind Sheffield, with just 22% and 24% of locals working out weekly. As well as activity levels, the survey also quizzed respondents on their consciousness about what they eat. While 77% of Liverpool residents claim to be careful when it comes to their diet, it is in fact Manchester which leads the way in the nutrition stakes as 85% of locals said they are careful about what they eat. Simon Bubb, managing director at Be a Better You commented: “What I find interesting from the research is how we’re seeing such big variations from city to city. “I am partly putting the fact that bigger cities such as Manchester, London and Liverpool boast higher fitness levels down to accessibility. For example, the main UK cities are home to more gyms, personal trainers, classes, and boot camps etc. so it’s likely this will impact on peoples’ motivation to get fit.” 22

NATASHA HAMILTON LEADS ‘BLACK HENNA’ TEMPORARY TATTOO WARNING AS SUMMER APPROACHES
tattoos. Having witnessed firsthand Alfie's terrible reaction to Black Henna, it’s just not worth the risk of permanent damage and letting your children have one done at home or abroad.” The majority of BHTTs are not based on henna at all, but a substance called paraphenylenediamine (PPD) which is found in hair dyes. PPD is allowed for use in hair dye, but its use for skin contact products such as temporary tattoos is illegal in the European Union. When PPD is used on the skin in this way it can cause blistering, painful skin burns and may even lead to scarring. It can also leave the person with a lifelong sensitivity to PPD, which increases the risk of a severe allergic reaction when using hair dye in the future. Research among dermatologists in 2015 revealed that they were seeing an increase in reactions at their clinics across the UK. • 4 out of 10 dermatologists asked had seen patients with skin reactions to BHTTs.
Atomic Kitten's Natasha Hamilton is backing a British Skin Foundation campaign to #AvoidBlackHenna as summer approaches. She joins The British Skin Foundation in warning the public of the dangers of so-called ‘black henna’ temporary tattoos (BHTTs) after her son suffered a reaction earlier this year. Upon returning from a holiday in Morocco, Alfie aged six was left with a scar on his leg where the BHTT had been. Natasha said, “I am backing the British Skin Foundation's #AvoidBlackHenna campaign as there needs to be a greater awareness of the potential permanent dangers posed by Black Henna tattoos. Sharing my photograph of Alfie's scarred leg will hopefully highlight these dangers and will act as a warning to parents who might not know the risks attached to these socalled temporary 'black henna' 24
• 1 in 20 dermatologists approached said that over 80% of the BHTT reactions they had seen were in children aged under 16. • Dermatologists asked confirmed that around half of the patients got a BHTT outside of the EU, where the legal status of PPD is not always clear; however the other half got a BHTT within the EU, with 27% of these in the UK. • About two-thirds of dermatologists approached have seen an increase in patients with reactions to hair dyes, many of whom have previously had a BHTT. Dr Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist & British Skin Foundation Spokesperson reinforced these findings saying, “Black henna is well known to cause skin reactions and should be treated with caution, particularly in children.”
The decision to re-issue this warning in 2017 is backed by the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA). “The message is clear: having a ‘black henna’ temporary tattoo presents a significant risk of a very nasty adverse reaction to the tattoo itself. It also increases the risk of either not being able to use most hair dyes in the future or having a bad reaction to them if the warnings are ignored. There are countries in this world that would kill for a voice on radio. Thank goodness we still have the freedom. My hands have been tied with the General Election Ive had to remain politics free – I cant wait for it to be put to bed. I wonder who will be running this country and how we will fare with Brexit?

I like to write a column for Lifestyle, I couldn’t have been more thrilled as she is someone I have always admired as a mum and businesswoman and has shown me an incredible amount of support. Amanda gave me a deadline of Wednesday I almost went into a wild panic ! Remember Peter Kay and his “my mum wants a bungalow tour” … I’ve been on a “My daughter needs funding to go the Dance World Cup Tour” ! Whilst I am incredibly proud that at the age of 11 Melodie has been selected along with her team at The Grace Academy to dance for her country in Germany in June – it also comes at a hefty price! The whirlwind started last Thursday afternoon hosting a clay pigeon shoot for The Princes Trust in Cholomendy Castle, I could have done with one of the helicopters that had landed in the grounds to whisk me to host the prestigious Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards in

St Georges Hall (to which I had done a quick change in the men’s toilet at the castle into a spangly jumpsuit #classy) to then run on stage with Jay Hynd with 5 mins to spare! However, wouldn’t have missed this opportunity to celebrate our fabulous City! I was back up for the breakfast show with Rossie on Radio City 2 at 4am on Friday, then had the honour once again of presenting an award with my old partner in crime Kev Seed at The Whiston Hospital Awards at the Echo Convention Centre on Friday – evening – I have worked with Kim Hughes and St Helens & Whiston Hospital for many years and they have such amazing staff ! After climbing in bed at 3.35 am (ssshhh!), it was Southport fashion weekend – and I was hosting the events both days at Pleasureland and the newly crowned Hotel of the Year – Ramada Plaza from 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday. It was fantastic to see the local businesses come together including Flannels & KT Unique collections – with entertainment throughout the day being provided by CD Music Academy – plus also got badgered into belting out a few numbers myself over the weekend! Did I go home and put my slippers on after this? Well.. No… as both nights dashed to Prenton Park and straight on stage at Wirral Live to bring the likes of The Coral, Mic Lowry and Conor Maynard on stage in front of a 16,000 strong crowd! Melodie was thrilled as she gegged in to watch the finale of the fabulous Little Mix who closed the whole weekend. The alarm rudely awoke me at 4.10am on Monday morning to get back in the daily routine of breakfast show … then the hectic schedule concluded with hosting a book launch for an incredible lady Gina Kirkham (formerly Policewoman of the Year 2000) at Thornton Hall of “Handcuffs, Truncheons &
a Polyesther thong” – which incidentally is a hilarious read – she’s another amazing Ambassador for our City! Not only did the Ladies who attended have a fabulous afternoon but we also raised £2,300 for Cash for Kids & Incubabies – a charity very dear to the organisers of this event Claire Gallagher, Mandy Molby & Trudi Brooks. The pyjamas were on by 7pm… having cooked tea, done 2 loads of washing & packed lunches… .but after 14 hours sleep since the previous Wednesday – even this pink fluffy Duracell bunny needed her batteries recharging so was tucked up in bed by 10pm!

D I V E I N T O T H E C O S TA C Á L I DA F O R P E R F E C T U N D E RWAT E R T H R I L L S The Costa Calida, in the Region of Murcia, offers a rich variety of diving experiences for the beginner or the skilled diver. The region's seabed is blessed with a variety of marine life and flora, and numerous, fascinating historic shipwrecks, making the Cabo de PalosIslas Hormigas-Isla Grosa, CartagenaLa Azohía- Cabo Tiñoso, Mazarrón, and Águilas exceptional places for diving. All offer the opportunity to enjoy everything from easy dives in shallow waters, to more challenging routes recommended only for more experienced divers. For assistance, there are numerous diving centres offering courses and dive experiences for all levels: from beginners, to more technical dives to large shipwrecks, underwater caves and crevices, suitable for the experienced diver. In Cabo de Palos, Islas Hormigas and Isla Grosa - in the north-west of the region - one finds some of the best diving opportunities in the Mediterranean: spectacular reefs brimming with fish, overhangs and many seemingly unexplored caverns. Beyond the lagoon, the tips of an ancient volcanic chain form islands and undersea mountains in one of Spain's oldest marine reserves, dating from 1995. Not only is it a stunning place to come face to face with marine life, but
30
there are also traces of wooden vessels, both Roman and Phoenician, at the Bajo de la Campana site, just off the Isla Grosa - which itself features a stunning underwater posidonia oceanica meadow. Indeed, at one site a Phoenician trading ship is concealed beneath a Roman vessel while both sit atop another Phoenician ship. Use of the site for naval target practice down the years has created a number of hazards, which, consequently, have generated a large collection of wrecks, many in excellent condition. Meanwhile, Cartagena, protected as it is from the easterly wind, offers the possibility of discovering archaeological remains, such as ancient amphora, in the sands, though it should be remembered the artefacts are protected items and nothing can be removed from the seabed. Some of those which have been legitimately taken away may be seen in the ARQUA museum. The clear waters provide a perfect window on the resting place of many wrecks, from ancient times through to the modern era - there is even the fuselage of a Harrier (Jump Jet), sunk by the navy for training purposes with several a result of action in the two world wars. La Azohía is known for its cave diving, while Cabo Tiñoso has also, recently, been made a marine reserve.
The diving zone around Mazarrón mainly occupies 10 miles around the port, where there are depths of up to 60m, with deserted coves and underwater caves. Many of the wrecks here - including a Spanish minesweeper, the Dragaminas Nalon - have been sunk deliberately to create artificial reefs, which attract all manner of sealife including barracuda, swordfish, moray eel, grouper, conger eel, octopus, blue-spotted rays, and many more. The naturally protected waters around Águilas produce ideal diving territory, with many sheltered spots affording both wrecks and fauna. And, for absolute beginners, there's no better place to first test your mettle with diving lessons than in the shallow, calm and warm waters of the Mar Menor, one of Europe's largest saltwater lagoons. Access to Costa Cálida, Región de Murcia, is simple as it is served by Murcia-San Javier airport all year round, while Alicante airport is also nearby. Both airports are served by numerous other airlines flying from a wide variety of UK and Irish airports and flights in June cost from just £26 one way. THE NELSON MANDELA
P
lans for a permanent memorial to Nelson Mandela in a Liverpool park are set to be boosted by work to improve the lake around its proposed location. The Nelson Mandela Memorial Campaign (Mandela8) wants to create a tribute on the lake island at Princes Park to tie in with what would have been his 100th birthday in 2018, and reinstate a bridge link. Councillor Steve Munby, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “The Nelson Mandela Memorial would be an exciting addition to Princes Park and help attract more people to spend time there. 32
“He was made a Freeman of the City in 1994 and it is very fitting that Liverpool should be aiming to honour him, but it is equally vital that the area surrounding the memorial is improved.” The scheme is supported by Liverpool City Council, the North West TUC and National Museums Liverpool. Campaign Chair, Lynn Collins, said: “We very much welcome this proposal which will help our aim of creating a unique artwork which will celebrate and commemorate Nelson Mandela’s outstanding achievement for humanity, and will bring visitors and tourists to the park.
“We are currently in the process of appointing an artist who we will work with to create something special that fits the park and its environment and captures the ideals which Mandela stood for – of Freedom, Justice, Education and Equality. “This city has a long affiliation to Nelson Mandela and the chosen space of the island in Princes Park creates an opportunity to break down barriers, build bridges and create links on many levels connected to humanity and diversity. It is particularly fitting as Nelson Mandela was incarcerated on an island for 18 years of his imprisonment.”
MEMORIAL CAMPAIGN
The proposal is part of a package of measures proposed by the council costing more than £1 million, which would also see improvements at Calderstones Park and Sefton Park. At Calderstones Park, it is proposed that £140,000 is used to remove silt in the lake which has blocked watercourses and led to the closure of access for fishing. The lake bank would be reinstated and fishing platforms repaired and replaced.
intervals sited on the former 1.5km pony track. The Fairy Glen water feature will also be refurbished and there will be repairs to the watercourse and drainage improvements. The scheme will complement the already completed upgrade of Livingstone Drive car park, footpath repairs, tennis court refurbishment and improvements to the Oasis café and lakeside kiosk. The total cost of the work is £677,500.
And plans are also in place for a new ‘vitality trail’ at Sefton Park which will see a wide path with fitness equipment at regular
Mayoral lead for parks, Councillor Peter Mitchell, said: “We have some of the finest parks in the country in Liverpool and we are
committed to doing all we can to encouraging more people into them.“The lakes at these parks are important focal points which attract many people to see the wildlife. Their condition has been a concern for some time and we need to act now to improve them.” An earlier plan for a sports and play area at Sefton Park has been placed on hold due to concerns over affordability and its proximity to the recently constructed Otterspool Skate Park. Instead, the funding earmarked for the scheme will be used to pay for the work at Princes Park and Calderstones Park.
NEIGHBOURHOOD EATERIE AND BAR 62 Castle Street Liverpol L2 7LQ 0151 230 1717 REVIEW BY Amanda Moss
I
had a business luncheon and chose Neighbourhood as the glamorous place to discuss our affairs over a light lunch. We arrived 20 minutes early and sat at the bar to enjoy drink while we waited for our guest who I was keen to impress and the venue did not disappoint us. James was our bartender who was extremely courteous and helpful but could not tempt me to have one of the delicious looking cocktails. Daytime drinking does not agree with me and the school run! The bar stools were remarkably comfortable and I could have easily proper myself up there for the afternoon, but our guest arrived and we were seated for lunch. I love the decor of the venue, pink padded cushions and gold, stylish decor with neon framed lighting and yet hinting back to the 1980s. What is most memorable about Neighbourhood, however, was its aroma. Surprisingly its fragrance was of freshly cut flowers rather than the freshly prepared food we were about to undertake. We selected the 2 course set luncheon menu, very reasonable priced at ÂŁ13.50. For starters I had the buttermilk marinated chicken lollipops (posh chicken popcorn) while Michael had the beetroot with buckwheat tabbouleh and creme fraiche. Simon chose the tempura prawns with wasabi mayo. The plates arrived swiftly after our order, at a nice temperature and portion sizes were perfect. For mains Simon and I had the 34
steak frites with fries and a side order of onion rings. The peppercorn sauce was to die for, absolutely gorgeous. Vegetarian Michael had the woodland mushroom risotto and as it was served I had a moment of food envy! There were no complaints or even criticism of the food, it was delicious, it arrived looking as good looking as the venue itself and we will certainly be returning shortly. The weekends see the place heaving so to visit midweek at lunchtime when it was quieter was perfect and our business meeting was a success too.
THE GROVE BEER & TAP GRILL 18-20 Fleet Street, Liverpool L1 4NR R E V I E W B Y Amanda Moss
I n Liverpool’s little know oasis
of calm and tranquility amid the noise of the club scene lies The Grove. You’ve probably walked past it a million times and not noticed it but it is the perfect place to unwind after work or over lunch. Fortunately the weather was gorgeous when we went for lunch recently. I chose the spiced kale and squash salad with a lemon dressing while my companion had the smokey mountain stack burger (2 beef patties,
bratwurst and smokey bacon on a pretzel bun, monterey jack and salad with fries). There’s plenty of sides, what you would expect such was fries, chunky chips, a sweet potato fries and a fresh summer potato salad. There’s club sandwiches, special mains such as steak and chips and classic craft ale file and chips. What is interesting is a large vegetarian section as well
The service, like the drinks, flows effortlessly and I would recommend a visit to take advantage of their little garden during the coming months.
The Grove is attached to the back of Level night club so you wont run out of beer and wine. 35

Launching Little Buddhas was award winning therapist Tracy MaxMahonwho has has launched the first Mental Health first aid programme for children, believe to be the first in the UK. She now plans to take the courses into schools and colleges around the UK She explained how the Mental Health First Aid programme teaches skills and boosts confidence to support others. In the same way, as physical first aid allows anyone to give initial support to others experiencing a physical crisis, MHFA trains anyone to initially engage and support another person with 42
emotional/mental health challenges. Tracey said, "One of my passions is treating and helping young people with and without mental health and behavioural difficulties from ADHD, Autism, Trauma, Abuse, Anger, Downs syndrome, Bed wetting, Intrusive thoughts, digestive and muscular issues plus much more. I have created workshops for children under the mental health spectrum, visiting schools giving valuable information on the importance of therapies, mindfulness, and wellbeing, to help guide them on their journeys in school, when they leave school, employability and talk to them about my journey. We utilise various skills to create an “Individual Prescription” for the children to achieve the best results in recovery. Many of the treatments we use for young people are “non-evasive” and do not require them to feel uncomfortable, the relaxing stress free environment at Buddha Therapies can help a young person share their life experiences with
ease and the results can be astonishing. Realising that the younger generation is a priority in education in health and wellbeing, I have created, “Little Buddha Wellbeing”. Little Buddha Workshops will be available in mainstream schools or with individual parent and carers to suit age, needs or aims. In addition Tracy and her team provide support talks lasting 1-3 hours Tracy said, "There is nothing more rewarding than helping somebody who needs help, whether it be physically, spiritually or emotionally. Witnessing improvements in health, knowing you have lifted somebody’s spirit and helped them to create “positive emotions”, so they have the support they need to deal with life’s challenges, is one of the most satisfying thing you will ever do. My personal integrity is my passion, an affinity with people, nurturing them to recovery and growth often when they are mentally and physically depleted and my personal resilience I try to teach to others too, is your emotional and spiritual strength which enables you to enjoy life, survive pain, disappointment, and sadness.” visit www.amandamosspr.uk for details of our next luncheon
Year 5 Taster Day: Thursday 22nd June Limited places available for September 2017
Gina Kirkham publishes her debut novel Handcuffs, Truncheon and a Polyester Thong and is causing a stir. It's a hilarious novel based on Gina's experiences as a policewoman. Gina is a glamorous, forthright and loyal to her home area. She's passionate about her time in the police force but also about empowering women to have careers and still keep their sanity/sense of humour! She chats to Lifestyle magazine about her change of career 44
What inspired you to write? I think all the emergency services, by virtue of the type incidents they have to deal with 365 days a year, quite quickly develop a quirky and sometimes dark sense of humour. It's a coping mechanism. Some stories are handed down and become folklore, others are simply the result of the general day to day working environment and if humour can be found in them, then all the better. Regaling each other with our respective ‘funnies’, we'd often say ‘we could write a book with what we deal with’, and the seed was planted for me. I'd been retired almost a year when I actually got round to drafting out my idea for Handcuffs, Truncheon and a Polyester Thong. What is your most memorable moment that’s in your book? Being invited to 10 Downing Street, all expenses paid in a fabulous hotel, for an Excellence in Policing event to meet the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Unfortunately, I went to check out the loos in No.10, got sidetracked with the posh fixtures and fittings, the quilted

How long were you in the police force and in what department? I served 18 1⁄2 years with Merseyside Police as a uniform Response Officer. I proudly remained at Constable rank throughout my career until my retirement, which came about through age rather than length of service. I reached a point where I was, in a geriatric sort of way, quite capable of climbing a wall to chase an offender but struggled to get down again on the other side. Being stuck six feet off the ground with your legs dangling in the air did absolutely nothing for my street cop image!

loo roll and potpourri and by time I returned to the function room, he been and gone..... and I'd missed him! Tell me about your events you are holding around your launch I've been incredibly lucky to have Waterstones Liverpool One hosting the launch for Handcuffs, Truncheon and a Polyester Thong on the evening of the actual publication date, 18th May. Luca Veste, author of the Murphy & Rossi crime series will be presenting the ‘In Conversation With..’ and Liverpool Actor and Playwright, Lynne Fitzgerald will be reading from the book as the main character, Mavis Upton. It promises to be a relaxed and fun evening and if you get there early enough, there's special Mavis Upton Cupcakes and one of her Limited Edition Humongously Large Thongs as a gift with every book purchased on the night, stocks permitting. I have a book signing on Saturday 20th May at Linghams Booksellers, Heswall and I’m delighted to have been asked to appear at the Radio City Cash for Kids & IncuBabies Charity Luncheon at Thornton Hall on 22nd May. How close to Mavis Upton’ life is your life? Ooooh gosh, now that would be telling!
It’s actually very close with a little bit of artistic licence thrown in. Each character was inspired by someone I know, and being able to write about Mavis based on my own life had its advantages. Drawing on my experiences and emotions gave me a better insight to her character. On occasions it was very difficult, and without giving too much of the story away, I'll admit to tearfully struggling with some chapters. It was strangely cathartic at times, as though I had needed to tell the story, whilst having the ability to be slightly removed as it was through the eyes of my alter ego. Has this been a journey of discovery? Definitely, and I'm discovering more about myself every day. When I think back to the young(ish) very nervous single mum who stood on the steps of Merseyside Police headquarters all those years ago, desperately hoping to achieve her dream of becoming a police officer to the old(ish) ‘crocodile-hunting’ Nanny that I am today, who desperately hoped to achieve her dream of not only writing a book, but of having one published – I still marvel at how fortunate I am and how much I have grown as a person. Sometimes just achieving one dream will seem an impossibility. I have been gifted two. Is there plans for a sequel? Absolutely yes. I'm 45,000 words into Handcuffs, Truncheon - The Next Decade (working title). I'm thoroughly enjoying the research I'm doing for the sequel whilst quietly pondering where this will take Mavis for the future. How much has the Wirral influenced your writing? Living and working here has had
an influence on my characters, the locations and my style of writing. As the book is fictional, place and location names are generic, but when I describe a scene, it will be based on my memory of somewhere I have worked or visited on the Wirral with a little bit of imagination thrown into the mix. It is a beautiful place to live. I have the sea a few minutes walk from my home, so that when the words refuse to come or Mavis is misbehaving leaving me with just
a flickering curser on the screen, I can take myself off to peoplewatch on the promenade for an hour or two.... ......whilst looking for someone to base my next character on!

ME HAPPY Social media and marketing entrepreneur Lara Besbrode tells Lifestyle What Makes Me Happy How do you define happiness? Happiness is being offline, on a beach with a cocktail in my hand, incommunicado from clients and my beloved kids for at least a day And how do you juggle your time running 2 businesses, raising kids and a cat? Last time I checked, it was 3 kids, 2 businesses, 2 guinea pigs and a cat! I'm either total chaos or super organised. I'm not entirely sure which one, maybe it's both. I just seem to keep it all in my head, I use a diary on my phone, but rarely check it. I do however set alerts for every meeting, action point and my phone pings incessantly.....drives everyone nuts. But at least I forget nothing! Oh and I find alcohol works..... Tell us about your businesses? Ok, so in 2014 I set up an online news hub, with a global
virtual team of volunteers. It doesn't generate revenue, however it's been an incredible source of knowledge and development for my primary business. That is called Social Sugar, which is a digital marketing, social media & PR agency. Set up in Feb 2016 and I love every day! No two days are the same, and as I'm social media junkie, it's my dream job! Describe a typical day? Ok hold on to your seats! I tend to get up at 3-4 am and check global news. I schedule 24 hours news agenda for the digital hub. I speak to my team in the US. Get up properly at 6 am and feed the pets. Write emails and check all my clients social media channels by 7am then I shower get kids up, breakfast & school runs. I'm in the gym at 8.30-9. 9-3.30 its meetings, events, new business. School run then dinner/homework/after school clubs. I normally respond to emails when I'm waiting to collect kids from clubs! Prep for the next day, then go home, cook dinner, drink (a lot of) wine. I watch one tv show, or a movie and go to bed by 9 pm. Chores/cleaning/meal prep get planned from my bed!
What is your definition of a happy mind and a happy soul? My definition of a happy mind and soul is 'self belief'. We can be our own worst enemy, our own critic....however I know I am my own fan club and that's what defines me! What advice would you give to other single hard working parents? My advice is never to give up. I have proved to myself at 48 that anything is possible. Believe in yourself, and praise your children every day. How do you switch off from work? I sleep! What is essential in your life to keep you happy? My iPhone, social media, a good Rioja, a beach, the sound of the sea and my kids - no particular order

I knew i was good to go.

‘Funky! Get Down’… I
don’t rate Sgt Pepper as even one of the best albums that The Beatles made, let alone the best album that anybody made, ever. I get its significance but Rubber Soul, Revolver and The White Album are obviously better. A far more important golden anniversary for me this summer is that of Funk.
After a show in May 1967 James Brown had a song idea and sent for his tenor sax player, Pee Wee Ellis, a lover of jazz and in particular of the album ‘Kind Of Blue’ by Miles Davis. The bassline Brown grunted for Pee Wee to notate became tangled with the opening track on the Davis’s seminal masterpiece, ‘So What’, somewhere in Pee Wee’s creative consciousness overnight. By combining R&B with Jazz the way that they did in the studio the next day to produce the powerful dancefloor groove of ‘Cold Sweat’, Brown and Ellis invented Funk. The word ‘funk’ was originally an old Afro-American slang word used particularly to denote the smell of the human body after sweaty sex. The name ‘Jazz’, derived from a slang term for human semen, had similarly been given to the new music which was invented while entertaining paying customers at the many busy brothels of New Orleans’ Storyville district in around the year 1900.
of ‘Flower Power’. Other progressive artists of the time, like the ground-breaking Sly & The Family Stone, with their black and white and male and female band members and George Clinton’s Parliament and Funkadelic and even established legends like Miles Davis, himself, were moving in the same musical direction. But it was the world-wide commercial success of Brown’s ‘Cold Sweat’ which is acknowledged as Funk’s ‘big bang’ moment. Funk is probably my favourite kind of music and it lead directly to the creation of Disco and later to Hip Hop and also to the name of my beloved Jack Russell, ‘Funky’. Get down!
Funk combined the technical complexities of jazz with the simplicity and sexiness of Rhythm & Blues, which was only just starting to be called ‘Soul’ music when the Psychedelic arts movement flourished in the dawn

PE TIT PARLE CO MES T O D OW NTOWN LI VER POO L Liverpool has a new French restaurant right in the heart of the business district. Situated on Fenwick Street in the heart of the commercial sector of the city and around the corner from the Liverpool One shopping centre Petit Parle brings a piece of Paris to Liverpool. With a rustic feel and a very intimate 28 covers this little delight feels like you have stepped off a side street in the Le Cite district and into the heart of the French Capital. Small plates are the flavour of the day with around half of the menu being fish based. The menu is sourced locally with meats all coming from Hoylake, fruit and veg from Liverpool and mussels and oysters from Anglesey. Executive Head Chef Lloyd Wilson said “We have been inspired to bring a French restaurant to the city centre after numerous trips to different parts of France, specifically Paris. Considering we are a maritime city there are not many restaurants in the city which are fish based. A fine selection of French wines, artisan breads and an evolving menu mean we can really be creative with our dishes.” The restaurant has also paid a lot of attention to their drinks menu. The gins served are made from grapes, as is the way in France, as opposed to juniper berries. One drink that has also been popular since the restaurant opened at the end of April has been Frose. Lloyd explains “As we are in the Spring/Summer season now we have been making our own twist on Rose. Frose, a slush based wine cocktail has been really popular.”

A Knowsley secondary school has completely transformed its performance, jumping from an ‘inadequate’ Ofsted judgement two years ago to ‘Good’ in a recent inspection. It is an impressive turnaround for the school, with the latest report judging ‘Good’ in four out of five criteria, with an overall ‘Good’ rating. Effectiveness of Leadership and management, the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, support for pupil’s personal development, their behaviour and welfare and the school’s 16 to 19 study programme were all judged ‘Good’. Inspectors highlighted the “culture of aspiration “in the school and said that improved teaching has transformed pupil’s attitudes to learning. It said the support of the Wade Deacon Trust has been pivotal in the school’s successful journey. In addition, school attendance has significantly improved– inspectors said this was because pupils are motivated to attend because they want to succeed. One pupil spoken to during the inspection said, “The teachers have made us see that learning is important.” All in all, inspectors agreed that the pace of change at Halewood Academy has been ‘phenomenal’. Gary Evans, Principal at Halewood Academy, said “I’m delighted with this result and that our drive to improve education in Knowsley, providing high quality teaching and learning, has been recognised by Ofsted. We have been progressing a robust improvement plan over the last two years, which is clearly having a positive impact.

BIGGEST ROUND-THEWORLD OCEAN RACE RETURNS TO LIVERPOOL
58
The biggest round-the-world ocean race is to return to Liverpool with the start and finish of this unique global challenge moving from the capital back to the River Mersey on the tenth anniversary of its last partnership with the region.
heritage on the world stage to position the city as the home of large scale cultural events that are accessible for all – reinforced at the moment as Liverpool bids to be the UK host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
are Sydney, New York, and Shanghai. Sue Grindrod, chief executive, Albert Dock Liverpool, said: “The Clipper 2017-18 Race Start is going to be yet another spectacular event at Albert Dock this summer for our visitors.
The 2017-18 edition of the famous Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will set sail from Albert Dock, Liverpool, on Sunday, 20th August and return approximately eleven months later in Summer 2018.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said “It is a huge coup for Liverpool to once again play host to the start and finish of this prestigious race.
“As one of the world’s most important maritime cities, it is a thrill to welcome back the race to the waterfront for a fourth time, with Liverpool yet again on the world stage, and Albert Dock firmly at the heart of the action. The yachtsmen and women are guaranteed a warm Liverpool welcome in August before they embark on their intrepid adventure.”
The Clipper Race has grown enormously in number of participants, yacht entries, economic influence and media value since it was last hosted by Liverpool a decade ago and we are looking forward to putting on an even bigger show in the city this time, which will not just have significant local economic impact, but will also put a maritime spotlight on the city all around the world.” The Clipper Race now consists of twelve large 70-foot modern racing yachts sailed by 700 amateur crew, representing over 40 nationalities from all walks of life, led by professional skippers, making it the biggest ocean race to circumnavigate the planet. The historic Albert Dock will once again play host to the race and the thousands of visitors who will bring a welcome economic boost to the city. As the official Start and Finish Partner, Liverpool will utilise the Clipper Race’s global platform to raise its international profile and maritime legacy, hoping to inspire the next generation of sailors and seafaring enthusiasts in the waterfront city. It also aims to promote its cultural
He added: “Staging an event of this calibre puts the city once again on an international platform – and after welcoming this event four times before, it really feels like we are the home of the Clipper Race.
“
Legendary yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-9 and founder of the Clipper Race, said: “We are thrilled to announce that the Clipper Race is returning to the historic city of Liverpool. A significant site for UK maritime history, I fondly remember the warm reception we received when Liverpool last hosted the Clipper Race and am looking forward to returning to Albert Dock again this August.
“This city embraces and thrives on maritime spectacles - our affinity with the River is always muchcelebrated and being the start and finish partner of the Clipper 2017-18 Race is sure to attract thousands to our world-famous waterfront.”
This city embraces and thrives on maritime spectacles
“
“The impact on the local economy as a result of this race will of course be huge, but the pride it will engender in the people of Liverpool is priceless as the international spotlight shines on the city once again. We look forward to welcoming the fleet, its crew and supporters.” Liverpool has not only made a unique contribution to world commerce and culture, it has one of the world’s great waterfronts, with Albert Dock part of a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site in the city. Aside from Liverpool, the only other cities in the world that have arrival ports in the heart of the city
The 40,000-nautical mile Clipper 2017-18 Race will mark the fourthtime Liverpool has hosted the Clipper Race in its eleven editions, making the city the event’s most frequented start and finish port ever. Liverpool previously hosted the start and finish for the 2002-03, 2005-06 and 2007-08 race editions in the lead up to it being named European Capital of Culture in 2008. The eleventh edition of the unique biennial Clipper Race, the only event of its kind for non-professional sailors, will visit six continents and include six ocean crossings. Almost 5,000 crew have been turned into seasoned ocean racers during the past twenty years in what is still a rare accomplishment: more people have climbed Mount Everest than have raced around the planet on its oceans under sail. Crew can complete the full circumnavigation, or one or more of its eight legs, in one of the toughest endurance challenges. It is without doubt the world’s greatest ocean adventure. The Clipper 2017-18 Race will return to Liverpool’s Albert Dock in Summer 2018 following its global route which will include stopovers in South America (port TBC), Cape Town, Western Australia (port TBC), Sydney, Hobart, East Coast Australia (port TBC) Sanya and Qingdao – China, Seattle – USA, Panama, New York, and Derry Londonderry – Northern Ireland

Lifestyle monthly
Hurray, it’s summer!

I have been waiting all year for you. While we all embrace the warmer weather, it makes some people dread the removal of layers of clothes.Whereas I can’t wait to strip off and feel the sun on my skin, others are not so happy with this. Why?This really annoys me, why should people judge others on the way they look? I have been the victim of online criticism for my size, I trust these keyboard warriors all look like Jennifer Anisten and have no flaws? I work out four times a week in the gym, clean a 3 storey house and walk my dog yet my body won’t shift from a size 14. I am comfortable with this because after giving birth to six children and nearly dying in childbirth I am grateful for being alive. I think that my lifestyle is healthier than someone who is thinner than me, someone who may even starve themselves to achieve that super slimness that society encourages to achieve.Someone who possibly smokes and drinks, I do neither. I am not judging, I am saying that we should love the skin we are in. It may be a cliche but it’s true. Once you accept who you are life becomes a whole lot sweeter and you discover inner happiness. You stop punishing yourself and stop denying yourself the treats you love. Everything is ok in moderation. Trust me. Your beach body is ready and it’s staring right back at you in the mirror. It’s a message we echo in the fashion events I run, most recently Manchester Fashion Week took place, check out our feature inside. It’s a great run up to Liverpool Fashion Week in association with Buddha Therapies and BMD:Law in October and I am so excited that Gok Wan will be DJ-ing on our opening night. Tickets are on sale now at www.liverpoolfashionweek.co.uk It’s the Fashion and Beauty Awards at the end of the month, a time to recognise the talents of everyone in this industry, to celebrate the entrepreneurs and small businesses who keep our city looking and feeling so glamorous. Congratulations to all our finalists, you are all winners. Have a fabulous month, enjoy yourself reading your favourite free glossy magazine Amanda x
