June Issue 98

Hello

Lovely Lifestyle Readers What is it about a little bit of sunshine that makes everything seem better? After living almost every day for the past 8 months under an actual rain cloud, I did start to wonder if I should build a boat. But, what do you know, the sun has finally made an appearance and spirits are lifted, the air is filled with wafts of black barbeque smoke, and the smell of burnt sausages fills the nostrils, ahhh summer how I have missed thee. Everywhere you look, people are grinning and looking forward to the warmer months. Excitement is almost tangible with talk about the summer holidays and ticking off the remaining days on the calendar, me included. Speaking of summer holidays, I have noticed a deluge in the past few weeks of people talking and promoting crazy dieting with unachievable “magical” results. In one post I saw a promotion for delivery of grated vegetables that “eat” fat, to get that bikini body in time for summer in just two weeks! Well, I hate to burst the bubble, but there is no easy fix. The only way to be leaner and healthier, is to eat a healthier diet and exercise regularly. There is however one way to, “magically” feel better about yourself, and that’s through exercise. If you know me, you will know what a big fan I am of exercising, specifically running. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly don’t look like a runner, far from it. But if anyone is looking to magically feel fantastic, then a good work out is the way to go. Because afterwards, when you are back on the couch, with a well-deserved glass of wine in hand, you feel amazing. And while a few work outs will not give you a beach ready bikini body – you won’t care. The British Heart foundation have launched their own challenge for the summer, MyMarathon challenge. All you need to do is walk or run 26 miles in a month. I’m doing it, fancy joining me? If you want to know how I got started running or you want any tips on getting from the couch to running 1k, email me, tweet me or Facebook me, because if there is one thing I have lots of good tips on it’s running! Do’s

1. People love to talk about themselves, so help them do this by asking great questions. The other person will think you’re fantastic and they won’t remember that they didn’t ask you any questions. A few examples of great questions: 1. What’s your favourite bar or eatery in the city? 2. Where in the world is your favourite place? 3. What’s your dream career if you could be anything at all? 2. Talk to as many people at the event as possible. Mingling is a bit of an art form, but don’t be put off from circulating in the room. You’re all there to meet as many potential matches/dates as possible so keep conversations fairly brief and don’t be afraid to move on to someone else. If you’re not sure how to do this, try saying “it was lovely speaking with you, I’ll give you an opportunity to talk to someone else now, hope to speak to you again later”. This is great because it complements the other person, and says you value their time. 3. Everyone loves being with someone who is confident, warm and friendly. Make an effort to put your nerves to one side and let your happiness shine. A few ways to achieve this: 1. Walk tall 2. Smile 3. Look at people’s faces 4. ASK. It’s amazing how many people put off asking for someone’s number at a singles event. Don’t be one of those people. If you feel a connection with someone, ask for their number (and write down their name too, you don’t want to forget that!) Don’ts

1. Don’t ask people what they do for a living. This question can often be a turn off because you never know if the person you’re talking to actually likes their job. Some people use this question as a way to suss out what someone is earning, so best to steer clear and ask something more interesting and light-hearted instead. 2. Don’t talk about your ex the whole time. One of the biggest complaints I hear from people on first dates is that the other person spent too much time talking about an ex. If you aren’t over your last relationship yet, you might be better getting help to deal with the loss of the relationship before embarking on dating. Don’t bad mouth your ex either, there’s nothing attractive about someone who has nothing good to say about the person they dated before. 3. Don’t let your “wishlist” rule the night. Many of my clients say the best thing they ever did was ditch their wishlist and just have fun meeting people instead. Most people end up with a “type” out of habit and are amazed when they fall in love with someone who isn’t anything like their type. Keep an open mind and give everyone a chance at a mixer. 4. Don’t get into sexy talk or become over familiar. Flirting is fine, but talking about sex or being smutty can get you blacklisted so keep it tame. 5. Don’t get so nervous that you drink too much too fast. You don’t want to be drunk when your chatting to the other singles. You want people to remember you for the

InspIrIng Intellegence ‘ Inspectorate backs boys’ school ‘ ’s rIgorous pursuIt of excellence Merchant Taylors’ Senior and Junior Boys’ Schools (ages 7-18) are celebrating an outstanding Inspection Report after the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) praised both Schools as being ‘Excellent’ in the key categories of Pastoral Care, Pupils’ Personal Development, Curricular and extra-curricular Provision, Safeguarding, Governance and Leadership and Management. In the main findings of the report the Inspectors stated that ‘the development of the pupils is excellent’ and commented on how the ‘pupils benefit from much specialist subject teaching’ and that ‘highly motivated and enthusiastic, pupils respond well to academic rigour.’

12

Headmaster, Mr David Cook, said “we are very proud of this Report. A major finding of the inspection was the excellent quality of our boys’ personal development within and outside the classroom. We have a strong team of dedicated teaching staff who were commended highly for their pastoral care. Our specialist teaching and learning is focused towards boy friendly teaching; we are a member of the International Boys’ School Coalition and we know how to motivate boys to achieve their best”. The Inspectors met many pupils through focus groups and remarked that “they are self-confident with no hint of arrogance. They have a purposeful sense of what they want to do next and are ready to meet the challenges of adult life”.

In a time when Inspections rely heavily on parents’ and pupils’ feedback, rather than the word of the School and teaching staff, Mr Cook was delighted with the outcomes of the Inspection. He said “Mrs Thomas and I would like to thank all the parents that were involved in the Inspection process and we are thrilled with the ISI’s independent survey results, reporting that ‘parents are extremely satisfied with educational standards and the support their children receive and the excellent and efficient communication with the school.’ We are especially proud of the boys; they already know they are part of a great School but this report spells it out.”

This run of UK summer dates will coincide with the release of Elton’s brand new album ‘Wonderful Crazy Night’, which will arrive on the 5th February 2016. Elton first performed in Liverpool back in 1971, and has since then performed 12 shows in 4 venues in the city. Having given over 4000 performances in a career spanning more than fifty years, Elton said: “The simple truth is I want to spend more time with my family, and I am only too aware of just how precious the time ahead is. My sons are growing up so quickly; their early years are just flying by and I want to be there with them. So these concerts will give me the chance to thank the British audiences who have been so faithful to me over these many decades. We cannot get to everyone but I am going to try and am very happy to be coming back to Liverpool for the first time in eight years. It is always a humbling experience to perform in a city that gave the world John Lennon and the Beatles, and so many other important bands as well. My band and I will do our best to live up to that tradition, as I have since my first show there at the Philharmonic Hall in 1971.“ Having performed at several of the world’s most recognisable venues – including a pair of residencies at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Elton John continues to be one of this country’s biggest pop-culture exports, and as such, welcoming him to Liverpool on June 14th will be a fantastic opportunity.

internationaL tennis toUrnament The harlem GlobeTroTTer of Tennis reTurns To liverpool in June Mansour Bahrami is back on centre stage on centre court - and sports fans from all over the North West are delighted. Ilie Nastase calls Mansour Bahrami a “maestro.” John McEnroe reckons he’s a genius. While Rod Laver believes him to be “the most naturally-gifted player ever to pick up a racket.” To the Bahrami Army, he’s a showman who can serve while holding six tennis balls in his hand, a man who can catch tennis balls in his shorts pocket while playing an improbable winner – and somebody who can smash volleys which spin crazily back across the net. And he’s looking forward to showing off all his irrepressible skills and more. “Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament is one of the best competitions in the UK,” he said. “It combines everything that tennis has to offer, pitting up and coming WTA and ATP players against true legends of the game. “I am honoured to be a part of this year’s tournament and I will bring my full bag of tricks to the city to try and lift the title.” As a child in Iran Mansour didn’t own a real racket until he was 13 – so he taught himself to play using a rusty old metal frying pan. But he was barred from achieving tennis greatness because the

Ayatollah Khomeini who ruled Iran, saw tennis as a tool of Satan. In 1975 he made his Davis Cup debut against Roger Taylor and lost 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, but being a quick learner, either on grass or with a frying pan, he won nine of his next 11 singles matches in the competition before the Ayatollah’s henchmen banned tennis in revolutionary Iran. “For three years I was not allowed to hit a ball. I existed by playing backgammon all day,” he said. Finally, a friend of a friend of a friend persuaded the new foreign minister to grant Bahrami a visa to visit France. “I chose France because there are hundreds of small tournaments with prize money. But you have to win to collect the money,” he explained. In 1981, Bahrami reached the third round of the French Open as a qualifier, whereupon his cause was taken up by L’Equipe and Le Figaro, who demanded the renewal of his visa. As the most popular competitor on the seniors’ tour he is in demand and plays 40 weeks of the year. “I love playing. I love to feel people are having fun watching me. I cannot tell you how many matches I lose that I should win because I am joking around. Often I win but I feel the people haven’t enjoyed it so I am upset. I love to make them laugh. When the crowd laughs, I am the happiest man in the whole world.” He will be a happy man again in Liverpool in June. And so will the tennis fans who flock to see him. BRAZILICA FESTIVAL FRIdAy 15 To SundAy 17 JuLy

If you are looking for an honest to goodness Brazilian carnival, then take yourself to the amazing Brazilica Festival this July 15 -17. Year on year this event is getting bigger and bigger, it bursts with colour and drum beats and it’s sights and samba sounds will transport you direct to the carnival atmosphere of Rio. Organisers have revealed that the Brazilian Film Festival will also return, following its successful introduction last year, and a Fringe Festival packed with exhibitions and workshops, with artists visiting from Sao Paulo. Events will take place in venues across the city from 17 July leading up to the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics Games. It’s a family event, but for those who are in Liverpool in the evening there is an unmissalbe spectacular night-time Carnival Parade, which features Samba bands from across

the UK and overseas which is the main festival highlight. Get there early though as thousands of people are expected to line the route which makes its way from Abercrombie Square through the city centre streets with this year’s parade ending at a new location, yet to be announced. Maeve Morris of Liverpool Carnival Company said: “I am continually delighted with the support we receive from the Liverpool people towards the festival, last year’s parade was one our best ever. This year is going to be just as spectacular with the city coming alive with the sound of the Brazilian beat. Music, dance and costumes create the overall atmosphere of this event and we are already in full preparation mode to ensure we have a special festival for the Rio 2016 Olympics year.”

The organisers of Liverpool Pride, the regions annual LGBT festival are delighted to announce that one of the city’s most popular events will be returning for two days on Saturday, 30th and Sunday 31st July 2016, following months in the planning. Established in 2010, Liverpool Pride will return for a seventh consecutive year and this year will see big changes to how it is organised and presented, it will also return as free to enter. The event, described as an all new Liverpool Pride, will take a more prominent and visual position in the city, taking over St George’s Cultural Quarter, including St George’s Hall, The Plateau, William Brown Street and St John’s Gardens. 20

David Munn

The date always coincides with the anniversary of when murdered gay teenager Michael Causer tragically lost his life. Michael died on 2 August 2008, and the festival was specifically created in his memory as a way to celebrate his life and empower the LGBT communities. This year’s Liverpool Pride takes place the weekend before what would have also been Michael’s 27th birthday. The increasingly popular and poignant Liverpool Pride March remains a major part of the activity. The March on Saturday 30th July, will begin and end at the festival site of St George’s Hall, it will make its way through the streets of the city centre in celebratory style and return to officially launch the opening day. Organisers are encouraging as many groups, organisations and individuals to participate as possible. The March will also feature guest speakers representing the LGBT communities.

Lisa ieLD sf

Hi Lisa, are you looking forward to performing at Haydock Racecourse this summer? Absolutely. I can’t wait. I’m really excited to be headlining Haydock Park Racecourse on 5th August after the races. It’s been a little while since I last played in the North West so can’t wait to spend a summer evening with my fans. What can the audience expect from your concert –will you be giving us a mix of all your hits? It’ll be a mixture of the old and the new. Honest music. Have you performed at the Racecourse before? Although it’s not quite your home town of Rochdale, it is the North West, is it harder or easier to perform to a crowd on home turf? It’s always a little more edgy and exiting when performing to a “Home Crowd” and so exhilarating when you feel the love. Are you a fan of horse racing yourself – will you be having a flutter? I don’t usually bet on the nags, but if I’m at a racecourse I’m up for it. I never win though. I’ve been lucky in other ways. My whole life’s been a gamble. Do you still get nervous before performing? Do you have any superstitious rituals before you go on stage? Just before I walk on the stage I get butterflies. I don’t have a ritual. I just stand tall (as tall as I can!) and go out there. If we go right back to the beginning or your career, what gave you your big break? I entered a local talent show and won. One of the judges was a producer from Granada TV and I ended up on telly. Did you always want to go into music? Yes, but at one point I wanted to be a gymnast. That didn’t work out so I stuck with the music thing, but I’m still very bendy.

24

You have sold millions of albums all over the world, is there anything left that you still want to achieve with your music career? My career has given me the opportunity to see so many things and places and also learn more than I ever could have if I had stayed still. I feel incredibly lucky and every new experience is a bonus. Your latest album, Seven, had a lot of remixes on it by big names, is this something you sought out to reach a wider audience or did they approach you? Remixes have always been a part of what we do. I think it’s important not to be too introspective. What’s it like to hear a song that you have created be remixed by another person so give it a different musicality? It’s like listening to a new song. It’s interesting to look at a new perspective on something you’ve got very used to listening to. You have been around - and successful since the 80’s – where most musicians last at best a few years – what’s your secret to success? I don’t think anyone has the answer to that! If only we knew... I always try to make the best music I possibly can but make it first for my ears and then everyone else’s. What are your plans for the rest of 2016? Other than performing at Haydock Racecourse that is. I’m working on the album now. There’s a lot done but a lot to do. I have to be completely happy with it before anyone hears it. I’m also looking forward to shows in South America in September too.

Now in its 24th year, Africa Oyé attracted record crowds of around 80,000 in 2015 to the two-day, family friendly city event. Acts at the festival this year include DR Congo’s genre-bending Mbongwana Star, Ghanian highlife legend Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band and kora pioneer, Sona Jobarteh. Joining them in the latest wave of announcements are Baloji (sorcerer in Swahii), Bilan, Haiti-born Wesli and award winning UK hip-hop artist - Akala. Artistic Director, Paul Duhaney said of the latest reveal “Wesli was someone we looked at bringing to Liverpool in the past but travel issues held us back, so I’m really pleased to confirm him for this

year’s event. Baloji is another exciting, genre-mixing act that I know the audience are going to love and Bilan is someone I had the pleasure of seeing perform in Cape Verde at this year’s Atlantic Music Expo. And to round off the announcement with a performer of Akala’s stature is fantastic - one of the most important British rappers of the last decade.” The main stage acts will be complemented by the usual eclectic ‘Oyé Village’ featuring an array of foods from across the globe, traders, DJs, dance classes and workshops in the Active Zone, as well as kids entertainment to keep Sefton Park buzzing throughout the festival weekend. Africa Oyé will take place on 18th and 19th June in Sefton Park, from 12:30pm until 9:30pm both days. Entrance is FREE for all. For more information, please visit africaoye.com Images: Mark McNulty

Most of us can come up with a plethora of excuses not to go to the gym or exercise. But a BHF poll has revealed aside from membership costs the main reason people in the North West avoid going to the gym is feeling intimidated by other fitter people (25%). Second on the list was the fear of what other people would think of them when exercising (24%) and also not knowing or having the confidence to use the different exercise machines (24%). Regulars always taking over the gym (22%) was another turn off for people in the North West, whilst for many another key barrier was not feeling fit enough to start going to the gym in the first place (21%). Other gym pet peeves included people showing off at the gym, as well as people wearing lycra and grunting whilst exercising. But you don’t have to be a slave to the gym to be more active. The BHF is challenging the nation to take on its brand new MyMarathon challenge to conquer 26.2miles over a month and help fund lifesaving research. Runners can complete the challenge this summer in a way that’s a challenge for them. Whether it’s at the park, during lunch breaks or around the streets with friends by your side. Over a few days, a couple of weeks or the whole month – You decide the pace and you decide the place. Lucy Wilkinson, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Keeping active is vital to help improve your heart health. Everyone should feel proud to exercise knowing they are helping to keep their hearts strong. And now with the MyMarathon challenge you don’t have to be a slave to the gym. You decide the pace and you decide the place, so it’s a great way to get active 30

without feeling intimidated, and help us beat heart disease.” Heart and circulatory disease affects around 7million people in the UK and is responsible for around 155,000 deaths each year – around one person every three minutes. Every pound raised from MyMarathon will help the BHF fulfil its ambition to fund half a billion pounds of new research in the next five years, to revolutionise and accelerate the fight against heart disease. CHANGE 4 LIFE Is Your ChIld’‘s sweet tooth harmIng theIr teeth?

PUBLIC health officials in Liverpool are the first in the country to inform parents about the amount of sugar in popular brands of soft drinks. A high profile campaign titled, “Is your child’s sweet tooth harming their health?” outlines how many sugar cubes are in drinks such as Lucozade, Coca Cola, Tropicana, Capri-Sun and Ribena. The drive is aimed at tackling an alarming level of tooth decay in young children in the city, with dentists having to remove teeth from children as young as five under general anaesthetic on a daily basis. Around 2,000 children in the city will have had extractions by the age of five, and more than a third will have suffered from tooth decay. It is estimated the average child consumes more than their body weight in sugar every single year – a total of 5,543 cubes, more than three times the recommended amount. Councillor Tim Beaumont, Mayoral lead for wellbeing, said: “Through no fault of their own, families simply don’t realise how much sugar is in some of these drinks. This is about

getting families and young children into healthy habits which will hopefully last a lifetime and prevent future unnecessary pain and trauma.” The campaign highlights that 500ml of Lucozade contains 15.5 cubes (64 grams) of sugar while an equivalent bottle of Coca-Cola has 13.5 cubes (54 grams) – against a maximum daily allowance of five to seven cubes for children depending upon their age. Even healthier options such as Tropicana orange juice have 7.5 sugar cubes (30 grams) in a 300ml bottle. Director of Public Health, Dr Sandra Davies, said, “Our advice to parents, is to take their child to the dentist by the age of one, and teach them to brush their teeth correctly from an early age. There is also a wealth of information online in the Change4life campaign.” Sondos Albadri, Reader and Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Liverpool, said: “There is a myth that baby teeth are not important but the fact is that they are vital as they help guide adult teeth into position. Persistent infections can be detrimental to the child general health and early loss of baby teeth can also lead to problems with adult teeth later in life. More facts about sugar and how people can cut back are available by searching CHANGE4LIFE online or download the sugar smart app on the iTunes app store or Google play.

The innovative alternative to dentures Dr Marius McGovern and the expert team at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa are offering the pioneering ‘All-on-4’ implants, which start from just £9,000 and lead the way in terms of comfort and the minimal amount of surgery required to fit... WOULDN’T it be fantastic to never have to worry about a denture moving or slipping every again? To have the confidence to choose anything off the menu and be able to laugh, sing and speak in public without the subconscious fear that your denture will let you down at the worst possible moment? Dr Marius McGovern, clinical director at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa, is passionate about ending denture suffering by using implants to provide same-day teeth. He said: “Having

missing teeth can have a social and functional impact, but here at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa, we aim to address this for our patients by providing same-day fixed teeth. “Many people are now aware that dental implants can replace single missing teeth in a highly-successful, attractive and longlasting way. “However, the advancement in dental implant techniques allows replacement of all missing teeth and full dentures with All-on-4 in a single day!” The All-on-4 system

The All-on-4 system utilises just four implants per arch

is similar to many other dental implant systems; the main difference is that only four implants are required, cutting down the amount of surgery needed to fit them and the number of screws required to hold the teeth in place. The All-on-4 system provides a secure base for a full arch of lower or upper teeth. Dr McGovern continued: “With dental implants, the roots of your missing teeth are replaces with the highlyspecialised titanium cylinder, which actually integrates with your bone and becomes part of you! “The pressure of biting on food is transferred through the implant into your jaw, just like your own teeth. Multiple implants are placed to distribute the biting force and allow almost natural function. “At Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa, our highlyexperienced team of dental surgeons are delighted to offer

8:00am Arriving at the Liverpool Aesthetics and Dental Spa, my wife and were greeted with smiles from the reception desk staff and instructed to take a seat. Immediately we were offered tea/coffee and a short, but pleasant conversation started between us and the staff. Dr Marius McGovern appeared smiling and greeted us. We shook hands and he requested my wife to the treatment room. Throughout the day, the waiting room became a hive of activity; clients in and out, more than one telephone ringing in reception and random people arriving to enquire about all sorts of issues. There’s always pleasant laughter in the air – an unusual sign in waiting rooms.

1:15pm My wife appeared smiling. I was shocked! Not only did she have her beautiful smile back, but the dental treatment had somehow reshaped her cheeks/mouth area. We went for a quick lunch break. 2:00pm Back in the waiting room. A smiling face appeared, my wife’s name was called and she disappeared to the treatment room. 5:00pm My wife appeared smiling with fantastic teeth and a smile I haven’t seen for a long time. Even the shape of her face and jaw-line had been restored. Marius McGovern is a genius in his field and his team is a credit to him.

Jenny Powell wows at the Fashione Manchester Fashion week TV presenter Jenny Powell hosted the FashionE Manchester Fashion Week last month, this year’s event was even bigger than last year, but we always knew that fashionable Manchester could strut their stuff with the best. Our editor Joy Lewis chats with Jenny about her career, meeting the queen and fashion. When were you discovered? It was 30 years ago on a talent show by the BBC, when I was a teenager. I was immediately thrust into a TV career, I’ve learnt a lot in the last 30 years of presenting. What was your first job on TV? I began on the cult music magazine show ‘No Limits’ and from there worked on Children’s BBC , CITV and Disney Channel till my 20’s. I learnt so may skills in making live television, which meant that I was scooped up to front live TV shows for the BBC , Sky 1 , and ITV including ‘This Morning’ ‘Loose Women’ and ‘Daybreak.’ Although most will remember my long stint on ‘The Wheel of Fortune’ and the property show ‘To buy or Not to buy.’ More recently she has worked on a luxury travel show and a food and wine series for Travel and has even done Stand Up in New York , something she is still keen to work on. Other than TV presenting what else keeps you busy? I write for some magazines and I love to sing, my worst problem is remembering all that I’ve has seen and done in my 30 year television career, although I does remember co-presenting with some very special people , Terry Wogan , Des O’Connor ... and at last .. Alan Titmarsh! My TV career has seen me front live pop concerts from Robbie Williams at Slane Castle to Top Of The Pops with Steve Wright to co-presenting kids shows with Nobby the Sheep to tap dancing with Bruce Forsyth on daytime TV. 34

Liner. a Look that has been around for decades, and worn by the most famous super stars around the gLobe incLuding the Likes of adeLe, maryLin monroe etc but this month

My top eye liner is the Laura Mercier creme liner in “Noir which is what I used to create this series of liner looks. Using a small and thin liner brush and a steady hand will give you a precise shape. To create this look, I first applied my skin care routine on my model to prepare her skin before the make-up application. If you don't prep your skin before a make-up application, the make-up won't sit correctly and stay on throughout the day, as well as it should. I used the Nude Skincare advanced renewal serum, advanced renewal moisturiser, advanced renewal eye complex cream and Laura Mercier hydrating primer. For the base, I used the Laura Mercier secret concealer under the eyes to brighten them up and Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser. I set the foundation using Charlotte Tilbury's flawless finish powder - this is KEY to help the make-up stay on longer! I used the MAC Cosmetics highlighter in "Soft & Gentle" & NARS multiple stickhighlighter in "Copcabana" to highlight the cheek bones, ridge of the nose, cupids bow and brow bone to create a dewy look on the skin. I added tonnes of Barry M showgirl mascara and then added the liner. To finish off the look, I used a nude lipstick and filled in the eyebrows. So what are you waiting for? Have fun creating different styles of liner on yourself and get creative! I hope this has inspired you. 38

Fur Bold lace + by Natalie Morris

2016 summer is Finally here and it looks like lace is huge on the runway, lace is no longer restricted to as the black and white Victorian evening wear. But now it’s appearing romantically in floral prints and in bold contrasting colours. lace is incorporated on side layered dresses, spidery halter tops and full pieces made of full of lace at rodarte which show off sleepwear as outerwear with positiVe delight.

Christopher Kane especially brought lace back to life in an innovative and fun manner at London fashion Week showcasing his Spring/Summer 2016 Ready to Wear collection incorporating colours such as; Tango Orange, Acid Green and Fuchsia and when combined together it creates an explosion. His use of Lace was worked into pleated skirts and shirt dresses reoccurred as a print effect on snake print vinyl.

Christopher Kane created unforgettable statement garments combining clashing colours and contrasting textures. Combining ombre trainers, patchwork lace, plastics and embroideries pieced together Chantilly edged with multi coloured turbo swishy silk fringes.

As a Stylist I took part in a collaboration photoshoot expressing the outfit transformations from Winter to Summer in a casual way. Using lace for the perfect lightweight summer garment visualising a summer’s day but being mindful of the practicality of unpredictable weather conditions of needing a jacket or scarf but at the same time introducing colour to contrast with the white vintage lace. Keeping the contrasting theme in mind, I decided to do the same with the fabrics using fur as a contrasting texture to lace. Pairing fur and lace worked so beautifully together but subtlety the idea of the shoot was to gradually remove the outer winter layers to reveal the summer outfit and the transformation to one season to another. Who is Kapital? Model, singer, performer? No matter what guise you find Kapital in, what is for certain is that it won’t be long before this gentleman goes global, he has success written all over him. Do that make him conceited, hard to work with? Emphatically no, if you ever have the opportunity to meet or work with Kapital, real name Obi Ezeh, in his hometown of Manchester you will find that his charm is unaffected and his charisma, effortless. Growing up in an intensely musical family, Kapital was hooked at a young age. “My mother and my older sister are keen musicians,” he explains “my mother was always playing music and singing so composition, sounds and lyrics were always a part of my life. I remember being 14 years old and listening to Warren G and Biggie, stopping the tape and rewinding so I could write down the words. That really opened my mind to writing my own lyrics and growing my own understanding of music. I started to use writing as a therapy and learned from an early age to channel my thoughts and emotions into music.” Like all the best musicians, Kapital is a man obsessed with his chosen art, openly influenced by everything from jazz to dance music and, of course, the hip hop that he’s become so well known for. Not only that, but he has dedicated himself to learning about all the parts of the process of crafting a fully formed track. At an early stage he learnt a great deal about recording music from his older sister, Adaeze, an accomplished musician in her own right. Laying down some early work in the studio where she lived, Kapital threw himself into the 42

world of writing and recording his own songs in order to perfect his craft. And it’s clear to see that his dedication and perfection is paying off. Since 2012 Kapital has picked up support from key radio players including BBC Radio 1’s Charlie Sloth and DJ Target, 1Xtra’s Yasmin Evans and Manchester’s BBC Introducing team. But it’s in the live arena where his character truly shines and undoubtedly it shows as Kapital has dropped bars alongside some of the principal names in rap. From US superstar Fabolous to home-grown heroes Chipmunk, Sneakbo and Professor Green, this talented MC has supported the biggest and the best in the business and headlined two of his own shows at the famous Manchester Academy. Having built a solid foundation through his mixtapes, freestyles and his debut single ‘Story So Far’ on Manchester-based label R82, 2015 sees Kapital ready for the next stage in his career. ‘No Limitations’ was released late 2014 in the USA and was premiered by world famous Vibe Magazine and featured on MTV America. EITC SCOOPS COMMUNICATIONS AWARD EvErton in thE Community’s ’Proud to bE bluE’ CamPaign was PrEsEntEd with thE CommuniCations award at thursday’s PrEstigious bEttEr soCiEty awards in london.

The charity’s ‘Proud to Be Blue’ campaign, which told the personal stories of individuals who have been supported by EitC, was recognised by a panel of judges for its work in telling the tale of the charity in an engaging and impactful manner. ‘Proud to be Blue’ kicked off the 2015/16 season and the six week focus into the work of Everton in the Community gave Blues an opportunity to hear first-hand from a variety of people who all openly attribute the Club’s official charity with turning their lives around and helping them deal with problems in their lives through a range of very diverse programmes. Fans heard from Lee Johnson who spent 18 years of his life sleeping rough on the streets of Liverpool and thanks to the help and support of EitC, now works part-time for the charity helping those overcome the same issues he experienced. ‘Proud to be Blue’ also introduced us to Tommy Dunne, a participant from Everton in the Community’s innovative ‘Pass on the Memories’ programme. After being diagnosed with early onset dementia at the age of 57, Tommy began attending weekly sessions at Goodison Park and has now become a positive role model in raising dementia awareness around the country and volunteers for the charity. 46 The

largely digital campaign was

delivered through social media and the use of regular emails to fans registered to receive Everton in the Community communications. The six ‘Proud to be Blue’ videos resulted in over 180,000 video views, thousands of likes, shares and retweets on both Facebook and Twitter and the followers increased by almost 100% on the recently launched @EitC Twitter account. Research carried out by the Club’s Insight team with a body of fans following the ‘Proud to be Blue’ campaign found that 97% said that the campaign made them proud to support Everton whilst 68% said it has encouraged them to learn more about Everton in the Community. After receiving the award, Denise Barrett-Baxendale, Everton in the Community CEO, said: “I am thrilled that the work of Everton in the Community has, once again, been recognised on a national stage. We are so proud of our ‘Proud to be Blue’ campaign and being able to share with Evertonians the personal stories of individuals who we have supported through the charity has been an honour and hopefully educated even more people on our life-changing work throughout Merseyside. “The real beauty of the

campaign, and something I feel that contributed to the success of ‘Proud to be Blue’, is that these six extraordinary people are real Evertonians who have proudly told their tale of how Everton in the Community makes a real difference to real people’s lives.” Everton in the Community were the only footballing charity to be shortlisted in the Better Society Awards and was also recognised on the night as a finalist in the ‘National Commitment to the Community’ category whilst Everton Free School was shortlisted for the ‘Innovation Award’. Organised by the Better Society Network (www.bettersociety.net) and now in its second successful year, the Better Society Awards reach out beyond the horizons of any one sector to assess and reward those who are helping create a better, more equal, ethical and sustainable world from the corporate perspective.

I ve never felt more proud to be a scouser

Over on The Guide Liverpool, we focus mainly on events, gigs, shows and lifestyle for Liverpool. Light hearted and positive coverage of fun goings on in the area. With so much great stuff happening 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, yes it can be manic, but it’s quite an easy job. However, last month we changed pace, and turned our attention to something much more serious, something that we simply couldn’t ignore, something we were proud and privileged to be able to cover. I am Liverpool born and bred, I adore this City. Not only it’s amazing calendar of events, festivals and general goings on, nor just it’s beautiful skyline, heritage and history - it’s the people of this City that really make it for me. The chatty cabbies who always have a story to share, the larger than life cafe workers, shop assistants and pub staff who bring a smile to work every day, to the hilarious women in the city whose scouse humour and wit can cheer anybody up. On Tuesday 26th April the Hillsborough verdicts came in, my office overlooks the beautiful memorial on St John’s Lane. The number of taxi drivers stopping their cabs to jump out and stand silent next to it for 5 minutes was unreal, the countless number of men walk up to it, kiss their hand and pass that kiss on to the 96, the number of ladies I saw hugging the memorial with tears streaming down their faces, and parents walking past with their kids explaining why so many flowers had been left, and the importance of what was happening. As heart-breaking as it was to see, it made me feel prouder than ever to be a scouser. We

48

obviously dropped everything we were doing and tried to cover the events as much as possible, the memorials and the reaction to the verdicts as best we could. I hope we did it justice. As the news of the verdicts spread, more and more people came to show their respects, the area got busier and busier and more and more flowers, scarves and messages were left. I spent much of the day interviewing people at St George’s Hall plateau. So many were on their lunch break and came down, to not only remember the 96 but as a show of solidarity. So many had driven in from far and wide. There were people from all walks of life, for all over the planet on the plateau that day. St George’s Hall became the real focal point over the next few days, and the stunning memorial on the steps is a sight that will live with many of us forever, as will the beautiful memorial service the following night. Buildings were lit red, the name of the 96 lit up St John’s Beacon and the 96 candles at St George’s lit up the plateau into the night. We should never ever have had to wait for verdicts, never mind for 27 years. Something special happened that week though, Liverpool came together and was united once again in the most beautiful, dignified and respectful way. I don’t think I have ever, nor will I ever feel more proud to be from this City as I did that week. JFT96. x

Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation The 23 Foundations main aim is to help children, not only on Merseyside but all over the world on every continent, who are living with cancer, autism and other illnesses and disabilities. We do this by asking Liverpool Football Club’s incredible supporters to buy signed memorabilia from www.jamiecarragher.org so we can help as many children as possible. On the site there are things to buy from as little at £2 right up to £350, so there is something for every budget. As they say every little helps, and this is certainly true for the 23 Foundation. We are currently supporting Food Bank projects, helping local hospitals to fund equipment for new wards, supporting families that have children with severe life threatening diseases. This is Jamie Carragher’s Foundation, so naturally we are doing a lot of work with Soccer Schools too. In fact we are helping thousands of children kids in England, Norway, Ireland with Soccer Schools programmes. These schools are instrumental in getting kids off the streets, playing sports,

keeping fit, playing in team sports and promoting a winning mentality and self-improvement. To find out more about the 23 Foundation and the work that we do visit www.jamiecarragher.org For the Best Liverpool Football Club Sporting Memorabilia Past and Present Our three main signed shirts are, Carragher, Gerrard and Alonso honours shirts with a picture of each. If you are looking for a gift for a Liverpool FC fan, it couldn’t get any better than one of these shirts. England’s Euro 2016 Starting Xi BaSed On Shirt SaleS It’s a discussion that has been taking place on television, social media, in workplaces and in every pub up and down the country. Who should make the England starting eleven in France at Euro 2016? For this fantasy England line up, online sales data has been used to pick the England team that would start in France based solely on how popular their England shirt is. Who is the most popular England player? Take a look below to find out. Strikers were by far the most popular players with Sturridge, Vardy, Kane and Rooney dictating more than 70% of the total sales. Jamie Vardy was also by far the most popular player, dominating 47% of the overall sales and further cementing his place as an England regular. While Sturridge still captured 3% of the total sales, it was not enough for him to get into the starting eleven. A Youthful Team The average age of this starting eleven is just 25. The back four is also one of England’s youngest, with an average age of just 24. For comparison, the back four starting the first England group game at Euro 2012 against France was 29.5 years old and at the 2014 World Cup against Italy, it was 29.25 years. A young team may not be a bad thing. Sky Sports found the youngest team in the Premier League this season is Tottenham Hotspur. They have created the most chances, had the most shots on target and while they may not win the league, they have scored the most goals so far this season. The Goalkeeper Joe Hart keeps his place in goal, which is expected considering he has been selected to represent England at the last three major tournaments. He has also been England’s first choice keeper at Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup. Players Who Didn’t Make It Some notable absentees from the starting eleven 50

include Sterling, Welbeck, Smalling and Henderson who combined have 100 England caps. Also, while Spurs and Leicester’s great seasons have managed to earn Jamie Vardy, Dele Alli and Harry Kane a place in the top five most popular players, they were not able to create places in the team for Eric Dier or Danny Drinkwater. As you can see, the results formed a mix and while it is highly unlikely that Roy Hodgson will factor in shirt sales when making his final choices, the results go some way in revealing the type of team and style of play England fans want. It seems that those buying shirts online prefer flair players like Barkley and Lallana over the adaptability and pace of players like Walcott and Milner. It also looks as if form plays the largest role in which shirt fans buy online and explains the reason Rooney and Sturridge have slipped in popularity, while Jamie Vardy, Dele Alli and Harry Kane are amongst the top sellers. Now the only thing left is to decide which pub you will be cheering from. Come On England!

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS For their fifth fully-animated feature-film collaboration, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures present The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. Comedy superstars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart make their animated feature-film debuts in The Secret Life of Pets, which co-stars Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy produce the film directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2), co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Brian Lynch and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio.

THE MERCHANT DRAWS HUGE CROWDS TO ITS LAUNCH Ropewalks has just got even better. Brand new bar, canteen and garden, The Merchant, which you will find at the heart of the super cool Ropewalks district, is now open, and the party to celebrate it was fantastic. Local entrepreneurs Richard McGinnis and Lewis Boardman invited guests last month, to enjoy a variety of drinks from the bar’s dedicated gin parlour, which stocks over 50 brands, and a selection of craft beers, including brands from the city’s own Liverpool Craft Beer Co. and Mad Hatter breweries, plus Cloudwater Brew Co. from Manchester. There was also an array of food on offer from the Merchant’s own pizza brand, Nightcrawler Pizza who were

giving away huge New York style slices all evening. Guest residents Patty Smith’s also served up their pimped-up session fries and burgers. Music on the evening was provided by Chibuku and Circus residents plus No Fakin DJs, and guests happily partied away into the early hours. If you love to indulge in the best gin –and who doesn’t, whilst dining on New York style pizza, succulent burgers, or to die for finger licking Patty Smith’s Session Fries, then get thee down to The Merchant. The style is laid back chic, the décor is industrial and the gin – did we mention the gin? That’s amazing. 62 Castle St, City Centre, Liverpool L2 7LQ

Prince t e e w S t h " oodniG G and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest

The perfect tonic for any mourning Prince fan like me has been to meet, play his music for and talk briefly about him to somebody who knew him. Mica Paris first met Prince when she was just eighteen years old. She flew to his home, the fabled Paisley Park in Minneapolis, to record the song If I Love U 2 Nite, which he wrote and produced for her second album, Contribution. Their first encounter was at one of Prince’s legendary after-show parties at Camden Palace, when he spotted her in his celebrity packed audience. While he was performing the classic Temptations song, Just My Imagination Prince spoke to her by name and passed her the mic. The moment is immortalised in the BBC 4 documentary shown again after his death. ‘My mind WAS completely blown, he was my idol and he knew MY name … I forgot all the words.’ I never got invited to a Prince after-party but had the privilege of seeing him live. I had the pleasure of DJing for Ms Paris’s own after-show party last month, though, down at Ma Boyle’s following her concert at St George’s Hall. Prince classics like I Feel For You, Erotic City, Boys & Girls and Anotherloverholeinyohead went down well with an audience of familiar showbiz faces and seasoned soul music lovers. A groovy time was had by all, including Ms Paris, who came over to thank me and chat briefly before she dragged herself off to bed after ‘… another hard day’s night.’ ‘You love your Prince, don’t you darlin’.’ She observed correctly. I was completely star struck. Not only was it Mica bleeding Paris, who I have adored since the first time I heard My One Temptation back the Second Summer of Love, but I was also very aware that she had known Prince as a friend, had recorded with him, even stayed at his home. I could only smile and nod politely. It was an emotional moment. ‘So do I, and I love you too, you’re an amazing DJ, come here .. ’

and gave me a hug.

Boss.

You be, financially, based on values, outlook, optimism, know the people tell you all the good reasons that fitness and wellbeing, spiritual, focus, successful something CAN’T be done, you know the people this could mean a lot of things. Hey let’s try it and that are always busy making things happen. Then see. Take a moment to think of your closest friends there are people who feel better about themselves and contacts, do they demonstrate the thinking and by putting everyone else down, you know the the behaviors that you would want to see in yourself people that make themselves feel better by building and your children. CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY Hello Lifestyle Readers, I’d like to start this column by talking about DIY as a craft. Over the last 10 years or so, DIY has been steadily declining as the skills are no longer being passed down from generation to generation and young people are not as interested in learning as they once were. Obviously, combating this downward trend is something I’m passionate about. As well as providing my monthly tips in this column, I work with a website called DIY Doctor - a fantastic site on which I post regular blogs, hints and tips here to give you a helping hand with a whole range of DIY tasks around the home. Take a look at their website www.diydoctor.org.uk Sometimes, a job is just took difficult to do yourself which is where Checkatrade comes in. The website is extremely straightforward to use and you can find hundreds of tradespeople in your local area for whatever job you need completing. Also, if you are a tradesperson, the benefits of joining are fantastic and it really gets your name out there. I’m pleased to confirm that I will be playing at this year’s Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall which is always a first-class event. This year, the prize fund is going up once again and it really has become one of the top golfing events in the UK and also welcomes a host of top celebs – some of whose golfing ability is slightly questionable – myself included! View their new website www.britishpar3.com That’s it from me this month all!

All the best,

Craig. Craig Phillips is an ambassador for Checkatrade.com. If you have a job that’s too big or complicated for you to do yourself, visit the website to find a r viewed, approved and reputable tradesperson.

Silicon Sealant around baths, sinks and showers areas •

Materials

Tube of silicone sealant

Masking tape

Industrial wipes

Tools

18v silicon/caulking gun

Trimming knife

Fed up trying to get silicon sealant looking neat and spending more time cleaning it off your hands?! For the sake of just a couple of pounds, a role of masking tape could save hours of unnecessary work! Simply stick two strips of masking tape to guide where you want the silicon to be, one on the tiles and one on the edge of the bath/sink or shower, leaving only about an 8mm gap between both edges of masking tape. Try using coloured tape so you can see more clearly where you are applying the silicon. Cut the nib off your silicon tube nozzle at a 45 degree angle. When purchasing silicon sealant, choose one with a microban substance in it, this will prevent black mould growing along the silicon. Apply the silicon in between the 2 inner edges of masking tape, don’t worry about how it looks at this point, this is where the tape will serve its purpose. Run your wet finger over the silicon, pressing it into the gap, so you are more or less touching the edges of the tape, then remove the tape straight away before drying. Leave the silicon to fully dry for at least 24 hours before use.

The lasT Word Term Time family holidays...all aboard! Some of you may have seen the Channel 4 news recently when I was called on to give my opinion about taking children out of school in term time. This comes after Jon Platt won his high court case against his local council who tried to prosecute him for taking his daughter out of school for a term time holiday. She has a 90% plus attendance and the case was, rightfully, thrown out of court. We are the only country in the world where fines are imposed on parents. This is an outrageous law, thousands of parents have been criminalised for making normal parental decisions. Schools are there to teach, not to police our activities. It is not the job of the government to overrule our decisions as parents, the majority of us want the best for our children and are more than capable of making sensible choices to help them grow and develop. Holidays these days are not a luxury but a necessity. In a world where we all work and run different activities, holidays are the only time that a family comes together and reconnects. The demands of jobs and careers often means that people can’t always take holidays in term time. As a business owner where my freelance staff all have children, we have to coordinate holidays to ensure we meet the needs of the business month on month, which means we don’t all head for the airports at the same time. Schools are run as businesses now rather than places of education, and head teachers are penalised for low attendance rates which is why they are keen to impose these ridiculous fines. They have to tick the boxes to ensure OFSTED give them a pat on the back. Honestly though, is a £60 or £120 fine going to stop us from taking our children out of school in term time? We’re still saving a packet on air fare prices even with these fines. No one is regulating the travel companies who are also hiking up the prices to rip us off. I hear some teachers arguing that they have to also take their holidays in term time and they are also penalised. Yes they are, but let’s remember they are also getting 13 weeks holiday a year compared to the average 4 weeks enjoyed by most employees. I save £800 by taking my children out of school a day earlier than the official break up date. Please don’t tell 66

me I am ruining their education, last year, for a change, I kept them in right up until the end of term and sat at home while they told me they watched DVDs for the entire week. I won’t be doing that again. This year my eldest daughter accompanies me to one of my events. She is keen to take over the business in the future and spending one day with me rather than go to school is, I think, extremely beneficial to understand how business operates. And as my friend suggested to me, with no disrespect to the amazing teachers doing a wonderful job…. some teachers have gone to school and university and then go straight back into school. They have spent their entire life being preached at. There is a big wide world out there and not all education is in the classsroom.
