the UK’s leading marine charity, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), is looking for thousands of volunteers to clean up the nation’s beaches as part of its 25th anniversary Great British Beach Clean event (14th-17thSeptember). Being by the sea makes us feel better, and the Great British Beach Clean isn’t just a good day out for people who love, or live near, the coast – it’s great for wildlife and the beach too! The Great British Beach Clean, now in its 25th year, not only spruces up hundreds of beaches around the coast, but volunteers also record the litter they find, and it’s this aspect that has really helped MCS change policy and behaviours over the last quarter of a century. The 5p carrier bag charge, a ban on microbeads in wash-off products, consultations on a plastic tax and deposit return schemes, reduction in the use of plastic straws and the banning of lantern and balloon releases – all have come about following compelling evidence gathered over decades of MCS beach cleans. The 2017 Great British Beach Clean saw almost 7,000 volunteer beach cleaners pick up record amounts of litter from 339 UK beaches - a staggering 718 bits of rubbish from every 100 metres cleaned. That was a 10% rise in the amount of beach litter picked up during the 2016 event. Beach cleans take place from Cornwall to Cumbria, Merseyside, Hampshire to the Highlands and all places in between. The event incorporates the Great Channel Islands Beach Clean and the Great Northern Irish Beach clean. Beach litter has steadily risen over the 24 years since MCS began recording it. However, there was some good news last year because the number of single-use plastic bags found on UK beaches almost halved between 2015 and 2016. 8
MCS says this was almost certainly due to the charges at the checkout and shows the impact that behaviour change can have on beach litter. In 2017, 'on the go' items made up 20% of all litter found on the UK’s beaches and 63% of all litter that comes from the public. MCS categorises cardboard cups, plastic cutlery, foil wrappers, straws, sandwich packets, lolly sticks, plastic bottles, drinks cans, glass bottles, plastic cups, lids and stirrers as 'on the go'. The charity says the figures highlight the nation’s lazy habits when it comes to littering. The
THE GREAT BRITISH BEACH CLEAN SEEKS THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS FOR ITS 25THANNUAL CLEAN-UP amount of litter suggests we're treating the outdoors as a big dustbin, happy to dump at will rather than keep hold of our litter until we find a bin. “Taking part in the Great British Beach Clean really can make a difference. In previous years when we’ve highlighted increases in dog poo bags and sewage related debris found on beaches, we’ve seen drops in numbers subsequently. Due to the massive increase in wet wipes we found between 2013 and 2015 we were able to launch our ‘Wet Wipes Turn Nasty’ campaign which has resulted in improvements in labelling, removal of plastic from 'flushable' wet wipes in retailers’ own brands, and shown retailers the need for
their flushable wipes to pass water industry standards.” says Lizzie Prior, MCS Beach and River Clean Project Officer. Cleaning and surveying a beach only takes a couple of hours at most. Each beach has a coordinator, who explains how to fill in a simple data form, and then it’s just a case of grabbing a litter picker and a bin bag and filling it up with rubbish! If you can’t find a beach clean near you, you can organise one, too. “Beach litter is a serious environmental problem,” says Lizzie Prior. “But the solution is in our hands. We want the 25th Great British Beach Clean weekend to be the biggest ever. The BBC’s Blue Planet II has given the UK public a real understanding of the pollution crisis facing our oceans and people really want to make a difference. The more volunteers we have, the better it’ll be for our seas.” Tor Harris, Head of Responsible Sourcing and Sustainability at Waitrose, said: “Our coast is important to all of us so the Great British Beach Clean is a key opportunity to reduce pollution, especially from plastics. We’re really happy to support such a fantastic event and this builds on our environmental commitment to ensure that all our packaging is widely recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2025. We’d love for our customers and Partners (employees) to sign up and organise local beach cleans to improve them for wildlife and all of us.” Join the The Great British Beach Clean and be part of the biggest and most influential fight against marine litter in the UK. Players of People’s Postcode Lottery also support the Marine Conservation Society beach litter programme. sign up to a clean near you at www.mcsuk.org/greatbritishbeach clean or call 01989 566017.

We believe in two things - Firstly that everyone deserves to live in a happy, healthy neighbourhood. Our doors are open to all, providing business support, training opportunities, to volunteer, to potter in the gardens, to have a cuppa and a chat, to belong, or just to feel connected and SAFE. Secondly that we weren't designed to do nothing! Through creative, meaningful activities, we are able to help people contribute to our shared community, have a purpose and feel they are part of something. Whether it’s making wooden
planters, creating mosaics or growing plants from seed, the end result is something that we can all be proud of and can see improving our neighbourhood. We have been part of this close-knit community for over 12 years now and together we are committed to changing perceptions of our town. #destinationbootle is the banner project under which we have been working in partnership with other groups to clean & green our area, as well as planning the development of a new canal-side neighbourhood of over 200 lovely homes for local people! We feel it is hugely important to have a cultural offer in our neighbourhood and as a result we took the decision to buy the old ‘Little Merton’ pub adjacent to our land and open the City Region’s only community pub. The renamed ‘Lock & Quay’ is fast becoming a meeting place for all, with many community groups using the space and enjoying the welcoming atmosphere. We’ve introduced ‘Pub Theatre’, ‘Opera Music Quizzes’ and regular quality live music - all of which has gone down a treat! Last year’s Beer Festival was so successful that everyone wanted more, so the idea for the Bootle Music Festival was born! We are excited to have secured top quality musicians alongside local up and coming artists to perform together to celebrate all that is great about our town - the people, the music, the stories... We only have two rules at SAFE... Make sure what you do doesn’t impact negatively on anyone else.. Make sure it’s cool! the Bootle Music Festival is very cool indeed! Big thanks to our wonderful community supporters without whom this wouldn’t happen.
MEGHAN TRAINOR
Chats about her new release is a real
family affair, working with her dad and her fiancé on the new album and she can’t wait to get married and start a family of her own. Meghan Trainor’s current singles ‘Can’t Dance‘ and ‘Let You Be Right‘ are out now, and taken from her forthcoming to be announced third album. Pop sensation Meghan Trainor releases her new single from her third album, and loves it no much she can’t actually decide which her favourite song. "There’s so many, “she gushes " I’ve tweeted about ‘Evil Twin’, it’s a

great concept I’ve written about on this new album, it’s about all the parts of you that you’re like ‘Why’d you do that?’ You know? ‘It’s not me, it’s her, she sucks’. And ‘Call Us Criminals’ is a great pop anthem, and ‘After You’. The only slow song I have on this album coming up is this very special important ballad that is just gonna rip everyone’s hearts out in the best way, and make everyone cry and I’m very proud of these songs. The songs are all loud, and feel like an anthem even if it’s about love. They’re very passionate and they have a lot of everyone singing the same lyric really loud. The song ‘No Excuses’ is the
only sassy song I had, and I realized at the time, I don’t have any of my classic songs like ‘No’ or ‘Lips Are Movin’, none of those songs. And I wanted to write something new, and not say just another thing about a boy. I wanted to say something important and that was about respect. And I went through something like that, when I felt disrespected and was like, okay, ‘we gotta write about this’. It’s perfect for everything going on in the world, we can give them an anthem, along with myself, and it worked out perfectly. And the fans ate it up in the best way.: For the first time she worked with her
dad on the album. He plays the piano and organ and provides backing singing to every song. “It was amazing working with him.” Meghan said, ‘A dream come true, because he used to play on my first albums when I was growing up, the albums that I produced myself and he would help me, so I would always put his name down for playing piano. So it was like a big ‘Thank You’ moment, of like ‘Oh we used to do this when I was younger.’ Ignoring the old saying of never mix business with pleasure Meghan also included her fiancé on the album. So was she concerned they would argue in the studio? "No no no. Everyone knows I was the boss that day! I was like ‘You can all come in and sing’, and I’m literally conducting them, and I’m telling them [singing] ‘Ahhh, sing your note before we start, here we go, hit it’. And I would tell them ‘we gotta do it again, she was flat’, like pointing to my mum. Like they just became my choir. And it was amazing and I felt very comfortable because I love them and they love me. Instead of yelling at strangers. “It was my idea to work together - I always wanted … I love gang vocals." She wrote Dear Future Husband to as a hommage to her fiance but has no plans on performing on her wedding day "I don’t wanna work on my wedding day! I don’t wanna think about nothin’. I always give him pressure though at every interview I’ve been saying like ‘I wrote you an entire album, and if you wanna write a song for me and sing it at our wedding that’d be hilarious and really cute’. So we’ll see what he does. He claims he’s writing one but it’s not good yet. We’ll see. Meghan is respected for her empowering lyrics on body confidence and self respect and she is particularly proud of the single “No Excuses’ She said, “After I wrote about my personal experience, I realised ‘Man, this never ends.’ And we always need a reminder of respect. I loved when Aretha Franklin came out with R-E-SP-E-C-T, and was like ‘Dang we still sing that song today and there’s nothing more powerful than that concept. I wish I could write one of those’. And then I did and I thought it’s so important right now and it could help so many people out there,
and it could be a great anthem for the women that are coming out and speaking out, and I’m very proud of them and I hope this song helps them and encourages them to keep doing what they’re doing.’ ‘I’ve gotten such great feedback on this song [No Excuses], they love the choreography that we wrote with Zumba, and they loved doing dance videos for me, which I love reposting. They love that I’m doing another empowering song, and I always think to have power is to empower other people. I heard that recently and was like, ‘that’s everything’. So I hope I encourage the fans to get sassy and confident and have the guts to tell someone like, ‘that’s disrespectful, don’t do that.’ You know? I have a lot of cousins in school too that are young and I just hear these horror stories where I’m like ‘Where are the parents? Why are they being so disrespectful?’ “I love the new album. Evil Twin, however … honestly it sounds like a big wedding song. Like a big happy fun wedding song, and it’s funny because it’s … It’s all… almost your insecurities, but then you’re also jealous of her because when she dances she’s crazy, she loves her body and she looks good and it’s a really cool way to split yourself in half. Everyone has an evil twin, but it’s fun and loud and has horns and it sounds, I must say, European. It sounds European, it sounds pretty cool. But then it brings it back to soul and funk and a big party, so that’s my favourite song on this album right now. Everything else is a hundred and five and up, you know? It’s up there. So we’re gonna be dancing, which is also why I’m working out a lot. Gotta get in shape, gonna be dancing a lot, yeah. Whilst Meghan my be living the dream, it hasn’t stopped her with her struggle with anxiety which she has been very vocal about. She said, ‘I didn’t know it would help so many people but now I understand why. We have so many decisions to make all day long, even down to what are we about to post. And I think that’s killing us. I think that’s giving us anxiety and I took a long break from social media for a minute and got back to working on me and my health, and started thinking about only
positive things. And that really cured me.” The biggest thing she has learned over the past two years is to put herself first and being healthy has changed her outlook on like “I actually being healthy, like working out and eating well and not doing anything that could hurt my body. I just stopped drinking booze, not because I had a problem with it or anything - I just hated hangovers and I hated my skin being so dry and just was like, ‘this is poison and I’m gonna just stop and be J.Lo and have a pretty face forever’, you know? I’m hoping for that, when I get older. We’ll see. But I noticed that helped my mental health a lot, and my fiancée Daryl inspired me to enjoy working out, which is a whole new thing. I don’t believe in runners’ high, but I believe in like the aftermath of no matter what happens today, I worked out and I look great and feel great.’ And there’s no signs of stopping her with her plans for the future. “What keeps me motivated? My future family, the kids I wanna have one day. And the songs I knew I was gonna have, it’s crazy. Like, you know when you think about the future, and you’re like ‘My kids are gonna be sick, they’re gonna be awesome’. And then I think about that with my music, I’m like, ‘That baby, that fourth album is gonna be so amazing’. And I kept saying that about the third album, I was like that’ll be my best one even before I wrote it, and now I do believe it is my best one. I’m biased, but like, that’s the best one I got. And I just care about it so much, and I can’t wait to promote it everywhere for the entire world.’

The Green Flag honours only those parks and green spaces that are beautifully maintained and have topnotch facilities. Alan Smith from Liverpool City Council’s parks team explains: “The Green Flag is awarded annually and both these parks have successfully achieved the award for a number of years now. It really does show the amount of effort the grounds teams from Glendale-Liverpool, Friends Group and various stakeholders put in to make sure our parks look their best every day.” Following the inspection both parks were also presented with Green Heritage status. This award is judged on how the historic features in each park are treated and on the general standard of conservation. THE CYCLING
SCOUSER

of Montana and North Dakota, before cycling through Chicago, Cleveland and, ultimately, the finish line at Jaguar Land Rover's North American Headquarters in New Jersey. In between the start and finish points, the Jaguar Land Rover engineer will face the elements with just a rucksack and a tent to accompany him through the majority of the journey.
the Cycling Scouser is back on his bike and this time, he’s looking to crack America to raise money for children’s cancer charity, Charlie’s Chance Foundation.
Andrew “Rogo” Rogerson, 33, made headlines in 2015 with his previous epic challenges that saw him cycle 10,000 miles across 19 countries, from Shanghai to his hometown of Liverpool (unassisted and untrained!) and run five marathons in five days in the sweltering heat of the Jordanian desert, raising over £27,000 since his fundraising journey began. Now, he’s taking on a gruelling coast-to-coast challenge across the United States of America in aid of Charlie’s Chance Foundation, a charity established to support children and their families affected by cancer. He’s looking to raise £30,000 which is his biggest target to date. The ride will see Rogo race against the clock to make the 3,100 mile distance in just 42 days. The massive feat will require eleven solid days of cycling to make the distance, which will leave just a small amount of time to rest and refuel. His journey will begin at Seattle Children’s Hospital, with him spending 10 days tackling the Rocky Mountains, facing not only an uphill battle with the tough land, but potentially bears and mountain lions too! From the Rockies, he’ll be looking to increase his pace on the flat states
Andrew said: “As long as Charlie is fighting his battle I feel as though getting back on the bike is the least I can do. Even though the last ride was longer, I think this one is going to be more of a challenge. It’s a 42 day race to get back home. I'll be covering daily distances much larger than the last ride, and I'm definitely not built for speed! I've also got the Rocky Mountains to deal with, and then there's the bears. “As with all the challenges though, difficult doesn't even come close compared to battling Leukaemia for 9 years.” Cycling Scouser is a charity adventure project launched to raise money for children’s cancer charity, Charlie’s Chance Foundation (registered charity number: 1174089). It was founded by Charlie’s parents, Rob and Sophie Fearn to support children with cancer and their families by the provision of funding to access beneficial treatments not offered by the NHS and to provide emotional and other support for them, their families and carers. The idea came following a need for treatment for Charlie that was only available in Seattle. Andrew is originally from Liverpool and comes from a family of keen adventurers. His brave fundraising efforts have seen him awarded with the Pride of Merseyside 2015 award and a Pride of Britain nomination. Andrew’s largest achievement is a 10,000 mile cycle from Shanghai to Liverpool, where he covered 19 countries in just 151 days. He then
ran five marathons in five days through the desert in Jordan, He has previously climbed Mount Snowdon four times in two days, as well as taking on Mount Kilimanjaro in 2009. He has also climbed Mount Elbrus in Russia and completed a cycle from North to South Vietnam The Charlie’s Chance Foundation was set up when the son of a close friend and work colleague of Andrew's, Charlie, was diagnosed with Leukaemia and was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. The entire journey will be supported by Andrew’s employer, Jaguar Land Rover, who has supported the charity since it was founded. Charlie's Chance is Jaguar Land Rover Halewood's charity of the year, voted for by employees. The aim of the foundation is to relieve sickness and promote and preserve good health of children with cancer by the provision of funding. Charlie’s Chance assists with fundraising to enable children with cancer to access beneficial treatments not offered by the NHS and to provide emotional and other support for them, their families and carers. Andrew’s journey begins on the 2nd July 2018 from Seattle. You can donate to Charlie’s Chance through The Cycling Scouser’s JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundrais ing/cyclingscouser

5 WAYS TO BE MORE MINDFUL WHEN EATING, TAKING INSPIRATION FROM THE ASIAN CULTURE 73% more but did not perceive themselves as any more satiated than those eating the normal portion size from the normal bowl.Asian cultures use smaller bowls than the typical Western dinner plate and chopsticks are also utilised, which may slow down the eating speed.
M indfulness is no longer a mystical
concept, with a range of apps, books and podcasts sharing top tips on how to be more mindful – which is essentially being present in the moment. So, how can we be more mindful when eating so we register what we’re eating, making us less likely to open that sharing bag of crisps? Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, Amy Wright working with itsu [itsu.com], the healthy pan-asian eatery, reveals how and why we should embrace the Asian culture in our quest to mindful eating: Mindful eating is a prominent part of Asian dining culture and a practice we can all incorporate into our own lives. Essentially, mindful eating is all about reducing stress, savouring the flavours of our food and enjoying healthy, balanced portions of foods that enhance our lives. What’s not to love really? Portion Perception When it comes to portion size in the Western world, bigger is better – though so are the average waistlines. Research shows that we tend to “eat with our eyes” and our bodies enjoy seeing food, hence the phrase “eyes bigger than your stomach!” The ability to forage and search for nutritious foods is one of the brain’s most ancient important functions, and as humans we rely primarily on our vision to find foods we are familiar with. Research also shows that the way food is plated (presented visually) has an influence on people’s flavour perception and consumption behaviour. In a recent study, half of the participants unknowingly consumed soup from a self-refilling bowl and ate 28
TIP: Try switching your huge plate for a smaller dish, taking smaller mindful bites and visually devouring your food as you enjoy it. Plant Power Meat is undeniably the mealtime superstar in western cultures. Conversely, the Asian diet, although variable between the many countries it comprises, is largely centred on plant foods; vegetables, whole grains, fruit and moderate amounts of lean protein. It’s easy to see why the Asian diet may be positively influential on wellbeing. Meat is often served as a side element, whilst vegetables, soy products, spices and soups take the main stage. With abundant research pointing to the health and sustainability benefits of a plantbased diet, being mindful of our meat consumption and exploring new ways to incorporate plant-based protein onto our dinner plates are essential. I enjoy the itsu Humble Warrior [£5.79, itsu.com], which has baked not fried quinoa & sweet potato falafel, nutrient dense avocado, seed & veg salad, sushi rice with low fat green herb dressing. TIP: Try doing a “Meat Free Monday” or exploring with some new spices and ingredients, which emulate the flavours of your favourite meaty dishes. saying Grace Many cultures and religions around the world practice sacred rituals surrounding food and mealtime. A deep respect for food and practicing thankfulness for its nourishment are part of many Asian cultures, including Buddhism. Some Buddhists say a prayer before dinner to acknowledge where the food comes from and
express gratitude for the meal. TIP:Even if you don’t want to say a prayer or give thanks aloud, we can all incorporate this mindful practice by taking a moment to think about where our food has come from, being grateful for the nutrients we are consuming and acknowledging the flavours we are enjoying in our food. Zen Vibes Mindfulness customs have permeated Zen culture for centuries. Zen isn’t necessarily about sitting on a pillow trying to rid ourselves of thoughts. Zen is an attitude that permeates every action from showering, to cooking to working to eating. Every behaviour and activity is part of Zen. Simply stopping to be present in the moment is a mindfulness practice and this is especially pertinent during a meal. In our busy modern lives, we tend to rush our food between commitments, ’stress eat’, skip meals or rarely stop to savour the flavour. Food is often an afterthought or something we “do” whilst we are doing something else that doesn’t require hands! TIP: Instead of scrolling through your phone or watching TV, switch off and observe your food, noting the flavours, textures, feelings and thoughts that arise in you. You could also try a silent dinner if you are eating with a partner or family. This may sound pretty easy, but it can be challenging! The health benefits are remarkable though, with mindfulness said to help to reduce stress and overeating and potentially even increasing our nutrient assimilation from the foods we eat!

refreshing and luscious alternative to all of the savoury menu options. Another highlight was the hugely impressive central bar which dominates the entrance to the Bazaar. With its arresting design features, friendly staff and array of enticing beverages, the bar was as popular amongst the guests as the food. Amongst the 700 hundred revellers were some well-known faces including TV personality, Nisha Katona. Nisha is best known for her sterling work in setting up Liverpool-favourite, Mowgli and is perfectly placed to comment on what’s happening at Grand Central Food Bazaar.
Grand Central Food Bazaar celebrated it’s long awaited opening with a spectacular launch event. Located in the former Quiggins space on Renshaw street, this new independent food market is the latest and most ambitious addition to Liverpool’s food offering. Grand Central Food Bazaar is a Gaudi-inspired communal space that has transformed into an open eatery food experience that incorporates 12 restaurants; all serving delicious gastronomic treats. The restaurants have been curated by Liverpool’s very own, Izakaya and the result is an eclectic mix of local and international cuisines; all lovingly prepared and beautifully presented The variety of culinary options means there is something to 30
accommodate all tastes. This was evident on the opening night as over 700 guests sampled their way through the exciting array of menus. The evening began with a champagne reception and a guided tour of the whole Bazaar. VIP guests were treated to a complimentary dining experience which included offerings from all 12 restaurants including vegan curries from Picnic, a Basquethemed taster menu from Pintxo, Catalonian tapas from BARNA, small plates from The Workshop, street food from Funky Lemon and slow cooked pulled meats from You’ve Pulled. For those seafood lovers out there, the Oyster bar proved to be a big hit and was complimented nicely by the offerings over at IZAKAYA. As we all know, there’s always room for dessert and the sweet treats from Little Macaron Shop and Caffe Cream provided a light,
Nisha said: “It’s incredible. It has rejuvenated this part of this city. What’s so encouraging is to see these independent food retailers in this funky, gorgeous incubator. This is what’s so great about Liverpool as a city – it’s the entrepreneurial spirit that allows seedlings to grow and this place is the perfect greenhouse!” Grand Central Food Bazaar has big plans and has already established itself as one of the premiere destinations for food and entertainment in the city. The opening night has created such a buzz of anticipation and the people behind the Bazaar project are primed and ready to exceed them all.

was a little girl, but more so in recent years since my experiences started to become more spiritual, and that is the power of perception. Think about it, how do you know that the same colour pink I look at, isn’t black to you? The answer is, you don’t, and that’s true of everything actually, it’s all a matter of perception. In fact, if you take the recent craze of meme’s being shared around Facebook regarding the colour of certain items, it’s quite clear that there isn’t an absolute truth, perception is all.

Another way to look at perception might be to remember that in eastern culture for example it is considered a compliment to burp after food, whereas here it is thought to be rude. If you are in china and you show the soles of your feet to someone, you would be considered bad mannered, in the masai tribe in Kenya, spitting at each other is a sign of respect, It’s offensive to tip your waiter in Japan...need I go on? So many unwritten rules we must conform to, but as a baby, we are born unconstrained by the etiquette of the world, we are shown how to be to fit into our surrounding and society by our parents and school, etc. Everyone is individual, everyone has different life experiences, traumas and coping techniques, there are no 2 people the same. We are all unique. Before judging someone or getting upset or angry towards another for not being the way you wanted/needed
them to be, ask yourself, do i really know their full story? Could there be something has broken down in communication? Am I looking at the situation from my perspective, or am i also compassionately looking at it from theirs as well? If you can say the latter then you are on it my friend. So why am I going on about all this? Well, when you begin to think and become more aware in this way, it then becomes easy to forgive others for not ‘seeing it your way’ or to have more compassion for others, as you haven’t lived their life. When you begin to think in this way your life becomes easier, you step out of any victim mentality and start to consciously understand that there are many perspectives that could be looked at, and yours is just one of them. It’s best not to expect that everyone thinks the way you do, as we now know, they don’t. Until next month, In lakech and all my lovin’ Geniene Azalea

been on are heart breaking and to hear how they have overcome their troubles and hurdles in life would be commendable even for an adult let alone a child – this is what makes me so proud to be an ambassador for YKids and work with the lovely Claire & Anne who work tirelessly to make a difference to the children’s life. RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO how are we over half way through the year!!! And without tempting fate – how much sunshine have we had? Let’s hope it continues through the summer holidays now that the kids have broken up. I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a number of events this month… with the highlight being the prestigious FAB Awards at the Radisson Blue Hotel for our very own delightful editor – Amanda Moss! It was great to be re united with my co host Ronnie Orr who was my on stage husband in a musical “Heart & Soul” at The Epstein Theatre a few years ago. Thankfully unlike our characters – I didn’t electrocute myself with an iron and he wasn’t killed off! Instead we had the chance to celebrate fabulous people within the Fashion & Beauty industry whilst being entertained by the amazing Mitch Mimms! Wow! We have such a glamorous City! Amazing job by Amanda & Go Events bringing everything together again! I once again needed the tissues whilst hosting the Y-Kids Believe Awards at the Hilton and recognising some incredible youngsters that we have in Liverpool. The journeys they have 34
I have also become another year older in July – although with my behaviour I think I’m going backwards rather than forwards! Had a lovely lunch out with family on my birthday at a little tea shop in Ainsdale called Mad Hatters, it was nice as my Mum doesn’t really get out much anymore and it was so lovely to have her with me. The evening was spent taxi driving Melodie to rehearsals to Adam Brown Dance Company at Holly Lodge as they had a dance show that weekend so nowhere near as much prosecco as I had hoped for. However watching Melodie dance since being with Adam full time makes it all worthwhile – she has grown in confidence and her dedication can only be applauded. I also had a fun evening at Circo hosting the Brazilica Carnival Queen! This is the first time I have hosted this event and what a spectacular night it was. The 10 finalists were absolutely delightful, talented and showed so much support for one another – I have no idea how the judges called the decision but the eventual winner was the beautiful Katusha Bento! I wasn’t quite brave enough to wear the same outfits as the girls .. however Lili Bizarre helped me out as always with a slightly less revealing outfit, almost bordering on Princess Jasmine to which the regulars in Champs in Ainsdale looked bemused by as I bounced in to sing on the same night at the Brazilica Final! As always – it’s great to work with one of my best mates Jay Hynd – we teamed up together to host the Learning Skills Awards at 30 James Street, I know I’ve said this earlier but honestly the work that people do in this City and the people that excel higher than anywhere else in the country – or the world.. is second to none !

DARREN VISION Schadenfreude
I ’m not a German speaker but I
do like this word. I don’t think we have our own English version of this word but it roughly translates as ‘taking pleasure from someone else’s misfortune’.
I had this feeling on 27 July. In fact I can put an exact time to it, it was at 4.52pm. I know this because this was the date and time that Germany were knocked out of the World Cup by South Korea. I experienced Schadenfreude and it was a strangely satisfying feeling. But I have a problem with it. In a sports context it’s ok to want
your opponent to lose because that’s the very nature of sport ... winners and losers. But in business anyone that enjoys Schadenfreude is actively enjoying failure within the business ... and they aren’t a team player. The nature of a genuine team player is someone that wants their colleagues to do well and celebrates their success with them. It’s someone that helps a colleague to solve a problem or helps them with their work when they are stressed. All this is done for no personal gain because you are a team player. But there is a personal gain. The by product of being a team player is usually that your work mates think highly of you ... your boss appreciates what you do (well, a good boss does!) ... the working atmosphere is usually better
around you ... and there is an unquantifiable satisfaction derived from helping people. The same is true in relationships ... a good friend wants good things for their own friends ... and a good deed done for a friend releases all those endorphins in the brain that make you feel good about yourself. The real winners in real life are the team players, the uplifters, the encouragers and the motivators. Make a decision today to make people feel better about themselves and you in turn will reap the benefits. The saying goes “you reap what you soe”2

ACTION TO TACKLE BAD LANDLORDS IN ANFIELD A CrACKdOWn on rogue landlords in part of Liverpool is getting underway. Dozens of properties in Anfield are being targeted by the city council’s Landlord Licensing team, who will be checking if they meet the required standards. It is part of a comprehensive programme of action by the council’s 60 strong team aimed at driving up standards in the private rented sector, which now accounts for more than 30 percent of housing in the city. Landlord Licensing was launched in Liverpool in 2015 and almost 45,000 licences have now been issued, with a further 9,000 unlicensed properties reported. Of the unlicensed properties inspected, around 75 percent have been found to
be non-compliant and in some cases closed down due to issues such as dangerous electrics and issues with fire doors. Councillor Lynnie Hinnigan, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet member for housing, said: “Landlord Licensing has, for the first time ever, given us a picture of the private rented sector across the city. “Crucially, it has given us the teeth to take action against the minority of landlords that take rent from often vulnerable tenants while housing them in substandard conditions. “Often we find that the badly managed properties also have issues related to crime and anti-social behaviour which can blight the local community. “Landlords can now see the benefits of having a licence in dealing with problem tenants, and in 80 percent of cases where we have raised the issue of antisocial behaviour it has been resolved swiftly. “There are areas of the city that have seen a reduction in anti-social behaviour as a result of our work in partnership with landlords, Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
“We are starting to see Landlord Licensing making a real difference to the lives of communities across Liverpool.” Since the scheme was launched, the city council has served 1,500 legal notices, brought 118 successful prosecutions, issued 145 cautions and a further 116 formal written warnings. Almost 1,300 cases are currently being considered for prosecution. Sergeant Dave Whalley from Merseyside Police said: “We already do a lot of work with housing providers but in the Anfield area there are a lot more private landlords. “The benefits of the Landlord Licensing scheme is that it puts the onus on the landlord to have property registered and deal with their tenants. “We have seen really good results around Anfield area recently in dealing with problem tenants and issues of antisocial behaviour where in past it has taken months to deal with. Hopefully this can only improve the quality of life for everyone living in these community.” The action in Anfield follows 10 similar enforcement operations across the city over the last two years.
Lack of rain and high demand for water during the recent hot spell means a hosepipe ban will be introduced across the North West.
Hosepipe ban on the way...
George has now ditched the hosepipe The weather’s been lovely… but lack of rain and high demand for water means that our reservoir levels are now lower than we’d like for this time of year.
and don’ts can be found on our website at unitedutilities.com where you will also find an address checker so you can see if your postcode is affected by the ban.
That’s why a hosepipe ban will be introduced across most of the North West on 5th August. Hosepipes and sprinklers use an incredible amount of water and a ban will help to reduce demand and ensure we have enough water to go round for essentials such as drinking, washing and cooking.
Although the ban doesn’t start until 5th August, it would really help if you could avoid using hosepipes and sprinklers at this time as it makes a huge difference in the amount of water being used across the North West. Please use a watering can instead or, even better, reuse any water from the home such as water from washing up bowls or bath water.
Once the ban is in force, it means you won’t be able to use hosepipes or sprinklers until further notice. A complete list of do’s
Thanks for your support, together we can keep the North West flowing this summer.
For full details about the hosepipe ban and to check if your postcode is affected, visit unitedutilities.com
WE’VE ALL BEEN ENJOYING THE LOVELY HOT WEATHER BUT THE LACK OF RAIN AND HIGH DEMAND FOR WATER MEANS THAT THE REGION’S RESERVOIRS ARE NOW LOWER THAN USUAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. The situation means water company United Utilities needs to introduce a hosepipe ban on the 5th August. People won’t be allowed to use either a hosepipe or sprinkler, but they will still be able to water plants and wash cars using watering cans and buckets. Hosepipes use an incredible amount of water - around 540 litres an hour, as much as a family of four would use in one day - while a sprinkler left running overnight uses as much water as a family of four would in a week. By taking these steps now we can all make sure we have enough water for more essential things like drinking, washing and cooking. Martin Padley, United Utilities Water Services Director, said: "Imposing some temporary restrictions on our customers is not something we take lightly, but unless we get a period of sustained rainfall before 5 August these restrictions will help us safeguard essential water supplies for longer.” For its part, United Utilities is working hard to maintain essential supplies, by doubling its efforts to find and fix leaks, take more water from ground water supplies, and moving water around its regional integrated network of pipes
Customers can do their bit as well. And there’s lots of useful tips and advice on the company’s websitewww.unitedutilities.com Added Martin: “Until the ban is introduced, if you’re able to avoid using garden sprinklers and hosepipes to water your lawns at this time it really will make a big difference. Please use a watering can instead or, even better, reuse any water from the home such as water from washing up bowls or bath water. “Whatever you can do to reduce your water usage will help to make sure there is enough water for everyone. For more ways to save water visit the tips page on our website, where you can also order FREE water saving gadgets to help you reduce water use in the home.” United Utilities top tips for saving water, energy and money include the following: 1. Only wash full loads in your washing machine or dishwasher 2. use a bucket and sponge to wash your car, rather than a hose-pipe 3. have a four-minute shower, instead of a bath 4. turn the tap off when brushing your teeth 5. Water your garden early in the morning or in the evening, when it is cooler.
And with the government’s roll out of Universal Credit due for September, the fear is more families and individuals will need to turn to the cash-strapped local authority for help. These are just some of the findings of a Liverpool City Council Cabinet report into the work of The Mayoral Hardship Fund. In its first year of operation, the fund has paid out nearly £300,000 to support low income families. The fund was created by Mayor Anderson as a lifeline to those who are struggling to make ends meet. The £2m pot provides financial support with ‘basic need’ items including food, fuel and clothing. It can also help to provide money for access to service such as financial advice, budgeting and legal advice. A report to the City Council’s Cabinet says it was created in anticipation of the potential effects of the government’s Welfare Reform Programme, falling incomes and the increasing cost of living. The hardship fund is one of range of crisis help provided by the city council, which also includes the Liverpool Citizens Support Scheme and Discretionary Housing Payments. 56
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “This year the council invested more than £23m in supporting people in our city who are struggling to make ends meet. Yet by 2020 our funding from the government will have fallen by and eye-watering £444m. Now we are bracing ourselves for the introduction of welfare reforms that appear to punish the very people they were supposed to protect.
Anyone can apply for support from the Mayoral Hardship Fund and all applications are judged against a strict set of criteria. The money is provided for families and individuals but also for specific initiatives aimed at reducing hardship in specific city council wards.
“Our analysis shows that measures such as the bedroom tax have hit disabled people in our communities. The reduced benefit cap unfairly targets people who are either unable or not required to look for work, whilst universal credit actually leaves hard working families on low incomes with less.
Over the last year 23 awards were granted to support ‘food costs’. In one ward, funding was provided to cover transport costs to allow people to visit a foodbank. In another it provided food hampers for people who would struggle over Christmas. In total £70,000 was spent on ensuring children from deprived backgrounds get a nutritious meal during the school holidays. Funding has also been used to provide computers at a Liverpool community centre to allow residents to do job searches and to help children with their homework. The progress report into the Mayoral Hardship Fund comes with a stark warning: when government welfare reforms like Universal Credit, begin to bite, more people will come to rely on support from the council. Earlier this year the council published its assessment of the potential negative effects of welfare reforms in the city. It concluded that people with longterm illnesses, families with children, women, older social housing tenants and young people would all be hit hard.
“The inference is clear – the more that is taken away from people by national government, the more they will need support from other sources paid for by local taxpayers. We are committed to doing all we can to help but against a backdrop of ever dwindling resources, something will have to give.” “We will continue to raise these issues with the government in the hope they will accept some of the unintended consequences of these reforms and take the time to reconsider introducing them.” The council’s cabinet accepted the update report on The Mayoral Hardship Fund. For more information, visit Liverpool City Council’s website: www.liverpool.gov.uk and search for Mayoral Hardship Fund. You can also call 0800 456 1523 to find out more and make a claim.
“
CASH from a special fund set up by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson is making sure that children from deprived backgrounds get a decent meal during the school holidays.
The report says: “The increasing strain on many households are clear from growing reliance upon crisis support whether this be from the council’s Liverpool Citizens Support Scheme, foodbanks across the city or other sources in the community. Citizens may struggle to meet everyday living costs, particularly when faced with an unexpected bill or costs for an emergency.”
We will continue to raise these issues

Lifestyle
Can you think of a time when you have won something? Whether you won a school sports day event as a kid, a pub quiz, bet with a friend or, like me, a blue peter badge for a writing competition, the chances are that you remember feeling fantastic.
www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk @amandalifestyle
you probably collected your winning certificate with a grin from ear-to-ear as you proudly stood up in front of your peers knowing that you had beaten the competition and were recognised for your huge achievement. Who doesn’t want themselves and their team to feel that same sense of euphoria from being recognised for their company’s achievements? Prior to organising regular award ceremonies, I only considered the immediate beneficial business-side of winning awards. A winner’s award logo looks amazing on a company’s email and printed marketing material. now though, as I have read up about mindfulness and positivity, I recognise the mega psychological benefits. Imagine you’re at one of my awards ceromonies with your friends, family and business colleagues. Looking around the room you can see your industry rivals all eagerly awaiting the awards announcements. you’ve spent time and effort preparing your written submission and now is when you’re going to find out if it’s all been worth it. you watch as the guest presenter comes up on stage and announces the next category. It’s yours. you hear those three little words “the winner is…” and glance around at your colleagues who are all biting their lips in anticipation. Lo and behold, you’ve won! heading up onto stage you get the same feeling you did when you were younger – that sense of achievement and pride that makes you feel like you can take on anything. that is the winning feeling. Why does it feel so good? After consulting Google, I was met with an abundance of articles which describe an interesting biological phenomenon, known as ‘the Winner Effect’. the 'winner effect' is a term used in biology to describe how an animal that has won a few fights against weak opponents is much more likely to win later bouts against stronger contenders. subsequently we have evolved to experience a sense of euphoria when we win, success changes the chemistry of our brains making us more focused, smarter and more confident the more you win, the more you will go on to win. having heard many times of how great a winners team felt following their win, I have spent almost ten years organising business awards. Many of my advertising colleagues who recently won an award at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards described winning as “an emotional pay rise.” I realised It’s actually a win within a win. And now we look forward to the Positive Awards next month, you still have time to nominate yourself or someone you know you deem worthy of winning. Voting opens on 25 August for 2 weeks and we have a handful of tickets left. Because the feeling of winning is infectious. It creates happiness and good vibes. Which is why my events are sold out. I hope to see you there!

“There’s a huge change in the way we eat. There’s a science to the way we serve our food to our bodies, combining East with West” Nutrilabs is a product of Buddha Therapies, helping to bring a mindful way to eat, bringing eastern therapies, medicinal herbs and oils and western science together, serving wholesome, nutritious foods which are destined to be a biological and mindful remedy, in concert with organic farming and nutritious food combined with holistic therapies to help heal from the inside out, “When we water a plant we water the root not the leaves, balance starts within”. Nutrilabs and Buddha Therapies approach works at the foundations of healing taking into consideration the traditional eastern Asian, medical theory, that there are three things that are essential to life, JING, QI and SHEN - “The Three Treasures”, –JING – Your Essence!!! using an array of eastern and western therapies collated using an individual consultation and prescription treating your symptoms and conditions, we aim to prevent disease rather than cure, QI - Your energy!!! With what we ingest being the key as to how our physical and emotional energy is sustained for our overall health, SHEN – Your Spirit!!! With meditation, life coaching, spiritual readings and future yoga classes and workshops to help towards peace and wisdom, the three treasures is a priority in healing for the mind, body and spirit.
At Nutrilabs our food tends to be plant based. So the majority of the diet comes from a wide spectrum of quality plant foods including whole grains, legumes (beans, peas, lentils), vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, sea veggies and fresh water algae. In the most reliable studies, a diet of 90% or more whole foods yields far less risk of common degenerative diseases. The Asian traditions serve as healing guideposts by themselves. In addition we use them as filters to help determine which aspects of nutritional science make the most sense. ABOut us Terence Kavanagh, I’m a serial entrepreneur, mentor, speaker and investor.
